Take advantage of the change of seasons and find new ways to step up for sustainability this fall. From delicious recipes to décor inspiration, here are three tips:
Falling leaves signal the arrival of autumn. Instead of raking and throwing them away in plastic garbage bags, consider leaving them on your lawn. Leaves play an important role in the health and natural cycles of plants and soil – leaving them can improve your garden and lawn.
If you’d prefer to remove the leaves, consider composting them instead of throwing them away. If your municipality doesn’t pick up yard waste, it’s easy to start composting at home.
When it comes to fall holidays, it’s time to pull out the decorations you stored away last year. While you
shouldn’t throw out the ones you already own, try to avoid purchasing new plastic decorations and use natural options if you need more. Pinecones, leaves and flowers can all be used to create a wreath or other decorative pieces. There is endless colourful and creative inspiration to be found in nature.
Warm up with a delicious fall meal like chicken stew in a slow cooker. As slow cookers use less energy over a long period of time, they give off fewer emissions than a conventional oven.
As a bonus – you might have leftovers, so you can spend less on food for the rest of the week. Choose chicken and other proteins from companies that are prioritizing ecofriendly initiatives, such as Maple Leaf Foods, which is a carbon-neutral food company. ■
— News CanadaAfter summer break it can be hard to transition back into the school routine. As the new school year approaches, it’s helpful to start preparing your child(ren) so that by the time the first day of school arrives, the whole family is feeling prepared. Here is a list of simple tips to make back to school a breeze:
Ease into your routine over a one to two-week period to ensure you’re ready for the first day back. You can start by re-introducing a consistent bedtime and practicing morning rituals like eating breakfast together at a regular time.
Help your child get back into the swing of things by making sure they have a clean and quiet study area. Restock school supplies and set it up together to make it a fun activity that will get them excited about using the space.
More free time in the summer often means more time spent in front of a screen, be it TV or tablet. Increased screen time can lead to poor sleeping habits and reduced attention spans, so implement a schedule as you prepare for the school year.
A good rule to follow could be no screens in the morning and a set
amount of time in the evening. Make sure screens are off completely an hour before bed.
Everyone learns at their own pace, and some subjects like math and reading may take more time to master than others.
After-school programs are a great way to help your child foster confidence and strong work-skills. With the help of a trained instructor, they work with your child to set up an individual lesson plan that aims to build a lifetime of math and reading success. ■
News CanadaThey say good things come in small packages, but it may not always feel that way when you are trying to prepare for a dinner party in a cramped kitchen. The experts at Haier, who specialize in
small kitchen spaces, have compiled a list of simple tips and tricks that can make even the tiniest kitchen space can feel larger than life.
1. Declutter, declutter, declutter. Even a few pieces out of place can
throw off a small space, so decluttering is key. Pare back your kitchen accessories to the necessities.
2. Keep it light. When choosing the colour palette for your kitchen, stick to neutral tones to expand and illuminate the walls. Keep both the walls and cabinetry the same colour to make the space appear bigger than it is. Use accessories like a bright kettle or tableware to add pops of colour.
3. Smart storage. Avoid using up precious countertop space for storage. Instead, think vertical, using hooks and shelves to maximize storage. Upper shelves can be used to store seasonal or largely decorative items.
4. Make a statement. Just because the space is small, not everything in it needs to be tiny. Filling the room with small accessories, small art and small furniture can make the whole room feel miniature or cluttered. Instead, choose a single statement piece – a lighting fixture, or a piece of art – to pull the room together and amp up your style. ■

Daylight saving time comes to an end each fall, at a time when the hours of available sunlight already are beginning to decline.
Some people are more accustomed to darkness than others. Norwegians, Swedes and people living in Alaska and the upper reaches of Canada near or above the Arctic Circle may go through a period when winters can be especially dark. Fairbanks, Alaska, gets just three hours and 42 minutes of sunlight on the winter solstice. Those in Barrow, Alaska, will endure a period of 67 days of darkness, according to Alaska.org. Residents of Seattle, which is even further north than cities such as Fargo, North Dakota, or Portland, Maine, deal with more darkness than those living outside the city may know.
Although much of the rest of North America doesn’t experience such profound periods of darkness, when the darkness of fall and winter arrives, it can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook. Borrowing some of the coping mechanisms relied on in northern latitudes can help many people to see the dark in a different light.
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons, beginning and ending at about the same times each year. Symptoms tend to start in the fall and continue into the winter, sapping energy and making a person feel moody. As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to severe problems if left untreated. Light treatment, talk therapy and medication can help people who are susceptible to SAD.
Spend time outdoors while the sun is bright in the sky. Make an effort to switch your schedule if work interferes with getting outdoors, even if all that can be managed is an outdoor walk at lunch. Sit by a bright window and soak up rays whenever possible.
activities.
Go skiing, snowboarding, outdoor ice skating, or snowshoeing. Look forward to winter for what can be done, rather than what can’t.
Instead of holing up indoors alone, frequent the places that become indoor gathering spots for locals. These can include coffee houses, breweries, restaurants, or even the local church. Plan more social occasions with friends and families so everyone can collectively shoo away the winter blues.
Use the darker hours as an excuse to exercise more, be it at the gym or outside. The Mayo Clinic says that exercise and other types of physical activity can relieve anxiety and depression, lifting an individual’s mood as a result.
Set the kindling ablaze in a fire pit, fireplace or woodburning stove, or just light a handful of candles. Flames can be soothing and less harsh on the eyes than artificial light.
Fall and winter darkness does not have to send a person into the doldrums if he or she embraces the right attitude. ■
— Metro CreativeAnew school year means a return to routine for many families, but it’s important to start on a healthy note. But, healthier doesn’t have to mean more expensive, so here are some solutions for parents who want to send their children to school with healthy meals on a healthy budget.
By taking advantage of extra time on the weekend, create a quick list and plan your meals in advance. Some brands offer products like fruit and nut dark chocolate cherry granola bars and maple and brown sugar flavour super grains oatmeal to get your kids through a long school day. A simple meal chart will also save a lot of time in the grocery store and the kitchen.
There’s no shame in buying in bulk, as long as the food doesn’t go to waste. When preparing your children’s lunches for school, utilize all your ingredients to their fullest extent. Leftovers are your new best friend and super cost effective.
Ordering in or purchasing fast food may be convenient at the time, especially during stressful times like back to school, but in the long run,
being your own chef will pay off - literally. Take the opportunity to spend quality family time in the kitchen and make your healthy meals together.
When making your back to school checklist be sure to include healthy ingredients. Buying fresh produce is a healthy way to get in vitamins and make sure the kids are eating well.
You’ll save when using a rewardsbased credit card which lets you earn points toward free groceries. Reward your children at school with healthy lunches you picked up with your very own rewards points. ■

It’s important to start on a healthy note. But, healthy doesn’t have to mean more expensive
More than four million people moved residences in Canada last year, many of whom did the packing themselves. For some, it works out fine; others have problems resulting from a lack of foresight, poorly packed boxes and inexperience in loading moving trucks.
Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination:
The most common packing mistake we see are people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight.
Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings.
Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you
will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement. Often, we hear of renters who think 40 or 50 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need upwards of 80 boxes, two days before moving day.
Sometimes we arrive at a customer’s home and they’re not packed. There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to move customers’ belongings while they are attempting to shove items into boxes and we get in each others’ way.
This also interferes with the optimal loading of the moving truck. We have a loading system where the first things we place in the truck are light items such as chairs, lampshades, cushions, etc; we place these items in the ‘attic’ (the area over the cab) of the truck. We can get lots of light items up there and they stay secure.
Next, we create a ‘box wall’ stacked to the ceiling to hold the items in the attic in place. We then stand plastic wrapped mattresses against the box wall and secure everything with tieoff straps to keep belongings from getting jostled during the move. If you’re not completely packed and ready on
moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time, and therefore, money.
Begin packing items you don’t use daily. As you pack your boxes move them to the main floor and stack them along a wall near the front door. Moving an apartment, say it takes 2.5 minutes, on average, to move a box from a bedroom to the truck. Having it on the main floor can shave 10 to 20 seconds off the time for each box. Saving 20 seconds per box can save lots of time and money.
We are skilled, have more experience and have standard-size small, medium and large boxes that are designed to fit into our trucks to create a perfect box wall for optimum efficiency and safety.
So, when it comes to moving, forethought goes a long way. Because your belongings mean a lot to you, take extra care when packing so that they arrive at your destination safely.

Chuck Resnick is vice-president marketing and operations at Two Men and A Truck – Canada® Chuck ResnickThere are two kinds of renters in Canada – those who have tenants insurance and those who don’t. According to a recent study conducted by Substance Strategies, more than half (53 per cent) of tenants in Canada are the kind that go uninsured. So what is causing this risk-taking phenomenon? It seems to be a lack of awareness. Below are the top four important things you need to know on this topic:
The landlord has insurance on what they own – the building itself and nothing more. You are responsible for your own property and the contents of your apartment. If an unfortunate mishap occurs and you don’t have tenant insurance, your landlord’s
policy won’t cover your 60” television, and you’ll end up having to watch your favourite show on your smartphone.
As a tenant, you’re most likely going to be financially responsible for any damage you cause, even if it’s accidental. The extent of civil liability is an important factor when considering what you are responsible for and if you are able to cover it out of pocket.
What’s interesting about insurance is that your belongings are not insured based on sales cost, but on the replacement cost which factors in the retail value at the time of loss including possible inflation. So that television you bought on sale for $400 dollars
reduced from $800 would be insured for the full $800 dollars. With that in mind, is there more in your house that you can’t afford to lose?
Forty per cent of Canadians believe they don’t have the means to pay for tenant insurance, but based on current minimum premiums, tenant insurance can cost less than a restaurant meal each month. If you can skip the extra coffee each day, then you’ve saved up enough money to afford tenant insurance.
Armed with this new knowledge about tenant insurance, you may want to consider getting a quick and simple quote from an insurance provider. Don’t be the 53 per cent that go uninsured!. ■
Parents are often juggling just to balance it all, so here are some tips that will help you and your family get back some more time in your daily routines.
Although this might sound like another time-consuming task, it saves time in the long-run. A quick to-do list will help avoid last-minute dashes and can help you better manage your routes so you can group together errands that are close in proximity.
Packing lunches can be an added stress, particularly if you don’t know what to make or don’t have all the
ingredients you need. At the beginning of the week, plan lunches and leftovers so you can shop for the ingredients you need with the rest of your groceries and avoid scrambling last minute.
Instead of spending your precious family time at the grocery store, take advantage of online services like Click and Collect, which is available at select Loblaws, Zehrs and Real Canadian Superstore locations. You can choose to pick up groceries after work or with your kids in tow at a time that works best for you. Their personal shoppers even bring your groceries out to your car.
Although many families have dedicated chores everyone is in charge of, it’s important to recognize when one family member might be overwhelmed. Whether it’s a child who had soccer practice and extra homework or a parent who worked later than anticipated, pitching in when possible to load the dishwasher or take out the garbage can make a huge difference. ■

Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all.
While large rental homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help renters save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.”
Tenants of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.
Entertaining guests is easier when there’s a dedicated space where visi-
tors can feel at home. When furnishing a living room, keep the guest room in mind. A sofa that opens up to a bed or a convertible sectional can be a comfortable place for guests to lay their heads. Side tables provide guests with places to store their belongings, and an empty storage chest can house bed linens or guests’ clothing.
Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items - from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used
for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.
Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day. ■

Missed alarms, stubborn teenagers and spilt milk are just some of the reasons you and your kids might be missing a healthy breakfast. But building a menu of a few grab-and-go breakfast ideas can help you never miss it again. Here, Brittany Thomas, a registered dietitian at Loblaws, shares her favourite ready-to-eat breakfasts that will give your family a great start to the day.
Incorporating protein in your breakfast is one tactic you can use to stay full until lunch. Muffin tins, eggs and your favourite veggies are all it takes to make egg muffins. To get additional fibre, add some whole wheat bread crumbs. Egg muffins can be stored in your fridge for up to four days to get you through most of the week without any morning prep. Enjoy them cold or pop them in the microwave covered in a damp paper towel for on your way out the door.
“When many people think smoothies, they think fruit, but smoothies can also be a source of calcium, protein, fibre and healthy fat,” says Thomas. Some of her top ingredient recommendations include ground nuts or seeds, coconut flakes, kefir, nut or pea butter, almond milk and a sneaky serving of spinach or kale. “My secret ingredient is PC Blue Menu Ancient Grains and Super Seed Blend since it’s high in fibre and a source of omega-3 polyunsaturates that the kids
don’t even know they’re getting.” For a fast exit, fill your blender cups the night before and store them in the fridge so they’re ready to go in the morning.
Speaking of fibre, whole wheat bread and cereals are great, but the kids may have a little more fun with oatmeal breakfast bars. “There are tons of great breakfast bar recipes online and they’re a snap to make on Sunday nights,” says Thomas. For extra protein to get you through to lunch, make a sandwich with two
squares, a little nut or pea butter, some sliced banana or a spot of jam.
Trail mix, oats, pea or nut butter and coconut are all you really need for some stellar no-bake trail mix bites. “Recipes and meal planning are among the free services we offer in the store, and the parents I’ve shared my trail mix bites recipe with say their kids can’t get enough of them,” says Thomas. Make a big batch on the weekend and store them in your fridge for the work week. ■
