Fortunately, even if you’re dashing out the door there are some simple ways to create better breakfasts that work with the time you have on hand. The better food experts at Sobeys have you covered with some breakfast tips and inspiration.

a balancing act

There’s no “right” breakfast plan, but following Canada’s Food Guide can help you create a wholesome breakfast. A balanced breakfast consists of foods from at least three food groups. This will provide you with a good distribution of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and essential vitamins and minerals.

Try sandwiching an egg in an English muffin and pair it with half a cup of orange juice or a piece of fruit, or mix three quarters of a cup of yogourt with half a cup of sliced fruit and a quarter cup of bran cereal.

Whenever possible, incorporate protein into your meal because it helps curb hunger. Good sources include eggs, nut butters, Greek yogourt, cottage cheese, and lean meats such as ham or back bacon.

Need an energy blast? Try a fruit-packed smoothie, which makes a great morning pre-workout snack as it provides carbohydrates for energy. Have it with one or two slices of toast and two tablespoons of peanut butter for a balanced meal. For something different, take five minutes to prep creamy chia pudding the night before. In a portable mason jar, combine two tablespoons of chia seeds with one cup of milk (nut, soy, rice, and dairy varieties all work) and sweetener to taste. Refrigerate overnight, then top with your choice of half a cup of fresh (or a quarter cup of dried) fruit and two tablespoons of nuts. If you’re eating away from home, pack the toppings separately and then combine once ready.

Got 15 minutes? Skip the drive-thru and make a breakfast sandwich stacked with ham, tomatoes, cheese, and a fried egg on a toasted English muffin. For an easy sandwich, layer whole grain bread with pear, cucumber, and fennel slices, then top with Havarti. ■ — News Canada

1. Choose colour wisely. Hot pink may be your favourite colour, but do you really want it all over the walls? Colour is a powerful influencer and can really affect the mood and tone of your bedroom, so go for hues that evoke a look and feel you’ll want to experience every day. If you want something more airy and serene, opt for neutrals. If you want a brighter, bolder aesthetic, consider using that hot pink as an accent colour in a lamp shade or vase.

2. Do-it-yourself. There’s nothing like homemade personal touches to make the space feel truly your own. Pick out a fabric you love and make a beautiful case for a decorative pillow. Customize a wooden picture frame with a fun paint colour or

textured stain. Repurpose an antique family heirloom or garage sale find. Whether you’re a DIY pro or can’t sew on a button to save your life, there’s a project you can master.

3. Spotlight your passion. Animals, photography, fashion, movies – whatever you love, you’ll love your room that much more if it’s included. Incorporating a few subtle touches is the key to keeping things fresh and stylish rather than gimmicky and overbearing. Use monochromatic images or frame prints in classic colours like white or black.

4. Deck out your window. You’ve heard that a good mattress is the best investment you’ll ever make, but a quality window treatment is just as important.

Choosing colours for your home that look good together can be intimidating, especially when moving into a new space or updating an old one. Before heading into projectmode, consider three tips for mastering colour coordination at home from Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore colour and design expert.

what’s staying and what’s going?

The simplest place to start is to look at what’s already in the room. Pick one item as an opportunity to bring a refreshed, colour-coordinated feel to your whole space. Do your floors need a little love? Is your furniture looking tired? Do your window trims seem faded? Base your design and colour ideas around the main colour in a room and pair colours accordingly.

it’s all about balance

The simplest way to create a balanced colour palette is to follow the 60/30/10 rule: 60 per cent of the room should be a dominant colour, 30 per cent should be the secondary colour and the last 10 per cent can be an accent colour. These colours are referred to as the mass colours, and the easiest way to harmonize them is by selecting a consistent undertone; either warm or cool.

Warm undertones are typically orange, yellow or red, while cool undertones have green, blue or purple. Grech says, “It’s safer to stay consistent with undertones, but when painting exclusively with a colour like white, mixing and matching warm and cool undertones can add subtle distinction within a space.”

what’s old can be new

Now that you’ve established what to re-vamp, Grech reminds us that paint is not only for walls.

“Give furniture a second life with a fresh coat of paint and opt for a colour that complements the tones found on your walls and flooring.” For this she uses Benjamin Moore Advance paint, an easy-to-apply paint that makes old furniture look new again. “Pair dark walls with furniture in cool tones and lighter hues such as fresh Smoky Green CC-700. Or, if you’re using a white wall, mix in a cozy, warm pop of colour, like Stuart Gold HC-10.”

Many people faced with moving between apartment rentals think packing is easy – a few boxes from the grocery or liquor store, some newspaper, a roll of tape and voila! On the contrary. If you value your personal belongings, and want them to arrive at your next home in good shape, packing involves much more consideration. This is especially true if you tend to be a bit disorganized, at the best of times. Even if you pride yourself on being a stickler for details, you may benefit from a few tips on efficient packing.

The number-one thing to remember is to start packing several weeks ahead of your move-out and more-in date. Done well, this process is amazingly time consuming, and packing in a hurry is usually counterproductive. Take your time to think everything through, and start with the items that are not critical to unpack right away. Avoid the overwhelming nature of leaving things to the last minute.

Get some decent packing materials. Make sure boxes are sturdy so they will not collapse under the strain. Consider buying boxes from your mover. Rather than using newsprint, which tends to smudge everything it touches, purchase proper all-white newsprint packing paper. At the other end, you can smooth it out for reuse, or save it for the kids for drawing and painting. This paper is substantial and will protect your items while keeping them clean. The last thing you need at your destination residence is to have to wash dishes before arranging them in your cupboards. And speaking of dishes, did you know that packing them on

their edges rather than flat can help to prevent breakage? Professional movers usually sell packing materials including boxes that are sized to stack neatly. This saves a lot of headaches on moving day.

One of the biggest mistakes do-ityourselfer movers make is to overpack. If you have ever tried to lift a huge carton filled with books, you know exactly what I mean. At Two Men and A Truck® Canada, we have a simple rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Another great tip is to wrap small items like knickknacks in coloured tissue paper before surrounding them with packing paper so that you don’t accidentally throw them out when unpacking. Trust me, it’s easy to do with little things. Over-packing also applies to cramming too much into one box. Remember that as carefully as you pack them, items can shift in transit.

Make your kids feel important during the move by getting them to pack their own toys and games; the process will also assure them that their belongings are coming with them. You should also be sure to take legal documents, medical records, expensive jewelry and any other pertinent papers and possessions with you

personally. Keep in mind, a professional moving company cannot transport hazardous materials such as flammables. Think carefully before you decide to move potentially dangerous items.

Be sure to label boxes on the top and on the sides to make it easier for whoever is distributing the cartons in your new home. Pack an essentials box of things you will need as soon as you move in and label it accordingly.

When it comes to moving a lot of items, a little common sense goes a long way. If packing is not your thing, your mover will give you an estimate to do the packing for you. Leaving it up to the professionals takes a lot of the worry out of packing. ■
