how to help kids learn to love
Reading is a passion for many people. But even avid readers may not know just how far back their love of reading stretches.
According to the American Acad emy of Pediatrics, children who find pleasure in reading have the potential to become lifelong read ers. In addition, studies have shown that reading to children can help kids become familiar with sounds, words and language, helping them in their earliest stages of cognitive
development. So, adults who love books might be able to trace their passion for page-turners to those times their mothers and fathers read aloud to them as youngsters.
Parents who want their children to learn to love reading can rely on various techniques to accomplish thatMakegoal.reading a routine. Routine is a necessity for parents, helping children learn when it's time to eat, play and go to sleep, among other things. Parents can include read
ing to their children as part of their daily routines. As noted, doing so will promote language skills and cognitive development while also acclimating children to books and providing valuable time for them to bond with their parents.
Create a distraction-free read ing environment. When reading to children, parents can create an en vironment with little to no distrac tions. This allows kids to focus on their parents' voices as well as the story they're being told. Parents can

turn off the television and the radio when reading to their kids. In addi tion, moms and dads should leave smartphones or tablets in another room so they aren't distracted by alerts or tempted to check for in coming messages or emails.
Read aloud together. Some chil dren may shy away from reading if they struggle in their initial ef forts to read. That does not mean kids won't ultimately enjoy read ing, it just means a little more effort may be required on parents' part to
help kids overcome any issues they have. Reading aloud to children can help little ones learn how to become good readers, as they will learn how to pronounce words and form sentences. Kids who know how to read can be encouraged to read to their parents, which can instill self-esteem. If kids struggle with certain words or sentences when reading aloud, parents can read those words and/or sentences aloud to them and ask them to re peat the phrases back.
Let kids pick their own books. When reading to youngsters, whether they're babies, toddlers or already in school, parents can let sons and daughters choose their own books. Children might be espe cially enthusiastic about reading if they're allowed to choose their own books and stories.
Reading can benefit children from the earliest stages of their lives all the way through adulthood. Parents can take various steps to foster a love of reading in their children. ■ Metro Creative

fighting inflation, making the most of your purchasing power
Inflation is quickly raising prices of goods and ser vices, and significantly im pacting monthly budgets. But there are ways to help lessen the effects. The first thing to do is figure out where inflation is hurting your household budget the most, likely with gas and groceries.
To help offset high gas prices, plan your errands and routes to cut down on travel time. Set up a carpool for your daily commute or the kids’ activities, and take public
transit, bike or walk when the dis tance and weather permits.
For groceries, try to find in-sea son local produce, check weekly fly ers for sales and plan your meals to avoid unnecessary waste. Further stretch your savings by growing your own greens, fruits and veg etables in a garden at home.
When substitutes aren’t avail able, find ways to mitigate costs. Rewards programs can help you save on future purchases and ad ventures. If you’re not part of a re wards program, look for one that
maximizes the money you spend, such as the BMO Ascend World EliteTravel,Mastercard.entertainment and dining don’t need to be put on the back burner due to inflation. It’s been a long two years and many of us are eager to get back to the activi ties we’ve missed out on. Use your earned rewards points towards hotel rooms, flights and tourist at tractions. With a plan in place and early preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer holidays within budget. ■

how to banish pet odours
Dogs,
cats, birds, and lizards have evolved from wild animals and outdoor companions to become beloved, largely domes ticated members of the family. The number of pets in homes across the country continues to grow. Accord ing to Statista, as of March 2017, 94.2 million cats and 89.7 million dogs were estimated to live in the United States as pets. Canada’s Pet
Wellness report estimates that there are approximately 7.9 million cats and 5.9 million dogs in Canada.
Over time, pet owners grow ac customed to their pets’ antics, messes and even their odours. Dealing with smells is par for the course for pet owners, and many become desensitized to certain com mon smells. But when company is on the way or people are thinking about selling their homes, pet odors must be addressed. Even though it will take effort, homeowners can freshen their homes and eliminate unpleasant pet-related smells.
find ways to ventilate
Odours can build up inside closed environments and prove overpowering. Opening windows
when applicable, using exhaust fans and encouraging cross-breezes can air certain odors from the home.
clean frequently
Cats and dogs can leave behind fur, dander, food messes, and more. Eliminating the debris that pets cre ate can reduce odors. Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors can help as well. Don’t forget to vacuum draperies and furniture, and consider purchasing cleaning appliances specifically designed for homes with pets.
keep on top of accidents and litter boxes
Puppies and even adult dogs may have their share of accidents.
Over time, pet owners theirmessestheiraccustomedgrowtopets’antics,andevenodours.Dealingwithsmellsisparforthecourseforpetowners,andmanybecomedesensitizedtocertaincommonsmells 26 4Rent.ca September 24–October 22, 2022
Cats may avoid litter boxes if they are not cleaned frequently and then soil around the house. Be sure to clean up pet waste messes
promptly.Baking soda and vinegar solu tions are all-natural ways to clean up and can help remove urine odours more readily.
Also, look for safe deodoriz ing cleaning products that can be used on carpeting, flooring and upholstery.
purchase an air purifier
Air purifiers can help remove odours and allergens from the air. They’re relatively inexpensive and can be placed in rooms that pets frequent. wash blanketspetand beds
Launder pet beds, cloth toys, blankets, and any other items that pets lounge on. Sweat, saliva and dander can cause these fabrics to become stinky, and, in turn, make the house smell worse.
keep pets clean
Most pets are very good at selfgrooming, but can benefit from a spa treatment once in awhile. Dogs that spend ample time outdoors or frequently get wet and dirty may need routine baths. Ask a profes sional groomer what he or she recommends to address potent pet odours. Neutralizing pet odours takes effort, but it can make for a more pleasant-smelling home environment. ■

how to balance saving and spending to live your life fully
After two years of the pandemic, most of us want to get out and en joy a little fun this sum mer. For many, that means some sort of travel, whether it’s to a far away destination, a family reunion, a romantic getaway or simply some place other than your own town.
But the reality is, inflation is tak ing a bite out of our purchasing power. In order to be able to splurge on the things you enjoy, you may need to look for ways to cut back in other areas.
The first step is to identify how you are spending your money. Cre ate a budget listing all your fixed and variable expenses and required savings.Next, prioritize what is most im portant to you and see if there are ways you can save on necessities. For example, try less expensive or store brand foods, cleaning prod ucts and hair products. You may discover that there isn’t a big differ ence in the taste or quality.
Small household changes, like meal planning and buying in-sea
son produce can also help minimize waste and expenses. When it comes to larger ticket items, research on line and compare prices and fea tures before making a purchase.
Lastly, when you set up recurring bills, go out to restaurants or for en tertainment, make the most of it with a travel reward card, like the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard. Earning points on everyday purchas es will help you save in the future.
With a little upfront planning and smart spending, you can lessen the impact of inflation on your budget. ■

how to have a social life without overspending
Spending money on so cial activities can be over whelming when everyday life feels unaffordable or you’re trying to save up for some thing special. Here are some ideas to help you live your life to the full est without breaking the bank.
be the person who plans
Most social groups have people who are more active in creating plans for getting together. They come up with ideas, make reservations and calculate costs. If you step up in this capacity, you’ll have more opportu nity to influence the final decisions. Next time you’re setting a date, sug gest some options that are more af
fordable for you, like an outdoor pic nic. Then step up when it comes to deciding on logistics like which park or backyard you’ll meet at.
be withhonestyourfriends
If you find you’re spending too much money going out with friends, tell them you need to mix up activities in order to save some cash. Chances are your friends are in a similar situation and will ap preciate someone suggesting more affordable hang outs. And even if somehow they’re not, they won’t want you hurting your own stabili ty just to get together. While talking about money can be intimidating, it’s worth discussing where you’re
at with your friend group so you can stop worrying.
take advantage of rewards
Redeeming rewards points can make lots of things more affordable and accessible. But not all points programs are created to be equal; be sure to choose one that makes the most of your spending by giv ing major points on everyday pur chases like dining, gas, groceries and transit. The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite card for instance lets you earn five times the amount of points on purchases and even provides priority access to special events like complimentary winery tastings and advanced film festival tickets. ■

how to pack safely
BY CHUCK RESNICK
Considering the impor
tance our “stuff” has in making us feel comfort able in our surroundings, these items deserve special thought and care. Thinking ahead is the best thing you can do when it comes to making arrangements, packing, etc. Organization should be your man tra, efficiency your goal.
If you are doing the packing, look ahead to lifting, stacking and unpacking the boxes during your move. People often run to the grocery or liquor store to pick up cartons, and then use newspaper as cushioning. Although this ap proach can save you a few dollars, in the long run, you may pay for it in stress, time and broken items.
During the packing itself, be gen erous with whatever you are using to cushion your things, especially fragile items. People often cram too much in each box in an attempt to keep the number of cartons down. As good as that sounds, it can back fire, as too many items with not enough cushioning may shift dur ing transportation and damage each other. In addition, someone will have to lift each box and place it into the moving vehicle.
Instead, think about purchasing cartons and packing paper from the professional mover you’ve cho sen. The boxes come in uniform small, medium and large sizes, which are easy to stack in a mov ing truck or van. Trust me, this con venience is huge on moving day. Unlike newspaper, packing paper does not leave behind ink that then has to be cleaned during an already hectic time in your life.
Packing too many heavy items into one container can result in no one being able to pick it up, or worse yet, the box breaking from the weight. Common sense dictates that heavier items be packed in smaller boxes, and vice versa. And did I mention
Again,labeling?alittlecommon sense goes
a long way to success at the other end. When you pack the moving vehicle, remember to place the box es you’ll need first, last –and label accordingly with the contents and which room it goes into. Even bet ter, if you are driving to your next
residence, place things such as gar bage bags, tissues, dish liquid, etc. into the car. You should also carry valuables such as jewelry, your lap top, important papers and the like separately from the bulk of your items.Another way to apply common sense to packing is to look at each item with the thought, do I really need or use this? Especially if you are moving from a house into a con dominium suite or apartment, par ing down possessions is important. The fewer things you move, the less your move will cost in terms of time and money. And speaking of mon ey, if your budget allows, hire mov ers to do your packing and trans porting. We do this every day, and we have it all down to an efficient system. Professional movers want our moves to go smoothly as much as our clients do.
Everyone is born with common sense, but few use it. If you are plan ning a move, I encourage you to be one of those savvy few! Visit www. twomen.ca for a location near you. ■
