Parents and caregivers take various measures to safeguard their children around their homes. The same attention to safety also extends to when families leave the house. Rules in place concerning vehicular safety are designed to keep kids safe on the road.

Car seats, boosters and seat belts provide protection for infants and children when used correctly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13. The NHTSA’s General Estimates System states that, in 2016, 394 children aged 5 or younger died in car crashes. However,

in that same year, 328 were saved by using car seats.

The right car seat can save lives, but parents, especially those expecting their first child, can easily become overwhelmed by the various types of seats on the market. Understanding the different seats, and when and how to use them, can help parents navigate their options.

Choosing a car seat

There are various types of car seats, and each may be appropriate depending on a child’s age and size.

· Rear-facing: This is the best seat for young children, as it cradles the child to reduce stress to the neck and spinal cord.

· Forward-facing : This has a harness and tether that limits child’s forward movement during a crash. It is typically used for children aged 2 and older.

· Booster: This is a seat that elevates and positions the child so that the vehicle’s seat belt fits properly over the child’s body.

Seat belts are used when children outgrow boosters. They should lie across the upper thighs and be snug across the shoulder and chest.

Each type of safety seat has subsets that further customize the fit and positioning for the child.

When to use a car seat

First and foremost, visit a governing agency website to determine the laws where you live regarding car seats. Transport Canada indicates each province and territory may have its own age, height, and weight restrictions. Consult the website for your province or territory for more information.

Installing the seat

Being a parent requires an ability to adapt to change. Newborns require around-the-clock care that often translates into little free time for their parents. When parents get opportunities to step away, exercise may be the furthest thing from their minds. Prior to getting pregnant, parents expecting for the first time may not have given much thought to how safe their home is for children. But with a baby on the way, safety must be the utmost priority at home.

Conceal cables and cords

Cables and cords pique kids’ curiosity. Pulling on cables and cords can put young children in the path of falling objects or increase their risk for injuries involving electrical wires and outlets. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture

When furnishing a children’s nursery, it’s best for parents to avoid hand-medown furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

Get rid of potential choking hazards

The National Safety Council and the National Center for Injury Prevention indicate that airway obstruction injuries are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among infants less than 12 months old. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

Kid’s room – small spaces decor

Space is always an issue. We never seem to have enough. But when it comes time to incorporate a child’s room within a smaller environment, what’s the key to a harmonious living and design arrangement?

Multifunctional pieces.

Today’s parents are looking for transitional pieces that can take them through various stages of the child’s growing years. Furniture needs to have double-duty applications. For instance, repurposing an existing dresser and then building a change table top to fit on it. Now you have an area to store diapers and more. When the child is older, you can remove the change top and you have a dresser.

When designing their room, remember children view the world from a lower perspective than we do, so get down to their eye level. But don’t forget to take advantage of all that vertical wall space. Consider creating higher shelving. Add a plate rail around the room and use that as storage for all the stuffed animals. It’s a great way of getting these things off the floor but still within view.

Sometimes, the designated child’s room may have originally been a den or home office, lacking any privacy by means of a fixed door from the main living space. A great solution is to divide off the room with back-to-front storage or

wardrobe cabinets. In an instant, you’ve created a great visual divider, plus an additional storage source.

As for the overall décor itself, it pays to be more selective, keeping the room relatively neutral and not to go overboard on themed rooms. Instead, add small touches of whimsy. It will help when making the transition as your child gets older.

With budgets always a concern – keep it simple. Instead of buying kid-sized furniture, invest in furniture they won’t outgrow. Add the playful elements with smaller décor pieces like a hand-crafted mobile or a wall hanging. It’s amazing how much charm a few simple pieces can bring to a child’s space. BG

One cry that can often baffle cargivers is the cry that seemingly never stops: colic. Colic is an inconsolable cry that lasts for up to three hours a day, three days a week for longer than three weeks. Parents magazine states up to 25 per cent of all babies between the ages of two weeks and three months develop colic. In their attempts at getting some peace and quiet, parents may look to the internet to learn more about colic. Unfortunately, many myths prevail about colic, and that can make it even harder to understand this difficult condition.

Myth: My baby is in pain.

Truth: According to Barbara Prudhomme White, Ph.D., an assistant professor of health and human services at the University of New Hampshire, colicky babies experience no greater increase in the levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those without colic. Any grimacing or other faces that appear like pain are probably not.

Myth: All babies will grow out of it.

Truth: Although many children outgrow colic by the time they’re six months old, that’s not the case for everyone. If colic is resulting from tight clothing, allergy, intolerance, gas, or some other small discomfort, it will not magically resolve by a certain time.

Myth: Manipulative therapies help relieve colic.

Truth: Physical therapies like chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture or massage do not demonstrate consistent positive results for colicky babies, according to American Family Physician. BG
