giving back and giving thanks this Thanksgiving

Celebrated by Canadians on the second Monday in October, Thanksgiving is a day to reflect on everything we are thankful for. The word “Thanksgiving” generally conjures up the image of a family sitting around a dinner table about to partake in a traditional dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans and pumpkin pie.

While this is still the norm in many households, over time, new traditions are springing up. For example, some families may swap the turkey for an equally savoury, meatless option, while others may choose to prepare a meal from their home country. And for those whose families live far away, there is “Friendsgiving.”

Friendsgiving, or Friends Thanksgiving in its longer form, refers to the

gathering of friends for a Thanksgiving dinner. Widely popular among early career professionals and university and college students who can’t travel home to be with their families, Friendsgiving is slowly gaining traction among other demographics.

Sharing with those in need on this holiday is another trend that is on the rise. In addition to enjoying a meal together, many families and friend groups are now adding giving back to the menu.

There are many ways to give back. Collecting non-perishable food items for a local food bank and serving at local food shelters are some examples of simple yet impactful ways to give back to your community. Giving back to the global community is another way families and friends groups can make the world a better place.

If you are having trouble deciding which cause to support, consider giving to a charity like Beautiful World Canada, which specializes in providing universal access to education. While public education is free in our country, millions of children around the world will never see the inside of a classroom. That’s why this organization is working to change this.

Founded in 2011, the not-for-profit organization works with local partners to provide comprehensive secondary and post-secondary scholarships to women and girls in Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. Take advantage of the change of seasons and find new ways to step up for sustainability this fall. From delicious recipes to décor inspiration, here are three tips:

1. leave the leaves

Falling leaves signal the arrival of autumn. Instead of raking and throwing them away in plastic garbage bags, consider leaving them on your lawn. Leaves play an important role in the health and natural cycles of plants and soil – leaving them can improve your garden and lawn.

If you’d prefer to remove the leaves, consider composting them instead of throwing them away. If your municipality doesn’t pick up yard waste, it’s easy to start composting at home.

2. decorate using nature

When it comes to fall holidays, it’s time to pull out the decorations you stored away last year. While you

shouldn’t throw out the ones you already own, try to avoid purchasing new plastic decorations and use natural options if you need more. Pinecones, leaves and flowers can all be used to create a wreath or other decorative pieces. There is endless colourful and creative inspiration to be found in nature.

3. embrace seasonal recipes

Warm up with a delicious fall meal like chicken stew in a slow cooker. As slow cookers use less energy over a long period of time, they give off fewer emissions than a conventional oven.

As a bonus – you might have leftovers, so you can spend less on food for the rest of the week. Choose chicken and other proteins from companies that are prioritizing ecofriendly initiatives, such as Maple Leaf Foods, which is a carbon-neutral food company. ■

Moving an elderly loved one can be tough. No one wants to upset that person and everyone wants the move to go as smoothly as possible. This can seem like mission impossible.

The children and families of the Baby Boomer generation – people born between 1946 and 1960 – are already helping their loved ones move into downsized or elderly assistance accommodations and often are not emotionally prepared for the task at hand.

Senior loved ones can be very set in their ways and often are not well equipped to express their emotional frustrations in a constructive way as moving day draws closer.

It all can seem like a daunting task.

Over the years, we have packed and moved many seniors and the important thing is to stay organized, be patient, calm and respectful throughout the entire moving process.

If you are moving a senior loved one into a retirement facility or a condo, you should first contact the management to find out what they are allowed to bring in, appropriate moving hours and if they have any tips specific to their facility to help smooth the moving process.

Remember the following:

organize, begin packing weeks in advance

If your loved one is moving from a large home to a one-bedroom condo, there will be more furniture than needed. Get a floor plan of the new space and help your senior plan the space with their favourite furnishings, then help them decide what to do with the left overs. If the item is a family heirloom and cannot be accommodated in the new space, suggest giving it to a close family member like a favourite grandchild.

sort before you pack

Seniors tend to collect things they don’t need or use. Be sensitive when suggesting to get rid of possessions. Ask if they use the item and if they would mind if you donated it to raise money for the Salvation Army, for example. Start packing early to avoid feeling overwhelmed as moving day draws closer.

pack, clean as you go

When helping sort and pack your senior’s belongings keep in mind that their eyesight and reduced mobility prevents them from doing regular chores and can result in poor housekeeping habits. Instead of commenting, offer to clean as you pack and try not to be judgmental.

you will need more time than you think

Allow enough time so your loved one doesn’t feel rushed. Sorting through years of stuff is difficult and sometimes emotionally painful. Allow your loved one time to say goodbye. If they take longer to clean out the desk drawer because they found a stack of pictures, let them take the time to walk down memory lane. This is a very important part of the process. Be patient and listen to their life stories, there will come a time you will be glad you did.

This prevents items like knickknacks from becoming lost or mistakenly thrown out.

label boxes on top and sides

Make sure to mark the top and sides of boxes as they’re packed and write in large letters to make it easier

for your loved one to read. Make sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items as ‘fragile’.

pack all electronics in the original boxes

Otherwise, use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items.

use packing paper

When wrapping fine china and precious items, do not use newsprint because the ink can bleed.

seal with packing tape

This makes it easier to stack and protect your senior’s belongings.

use boxes designed for items you are packing

Invest in dish packs for dishes and wardrobe boxes for clothing. Wardrobe boxes make it easy for seniors to access their clothing on hangers.

check unwanted clothing before donating

It’s a good idea to sort unwanted clothing for donation prior to moving. Before donating any gently worn unwanted clothing, check pockets for valuables. Seniors often hide small valuable items like jewelry or cash in the pockets of suit jackets or shoes and forget where they hid it.

make your loved one’s new space feel familiar

Take pictures and colour samples of the inside of their current home. Try to decorate the new space and place objects in a similar way, so that their new space will feel like the old one. Be as detailed as you can, from arranging the bedroom furniture to placing family pictures on the bureau. This will help make the new surroundings feel like home. n

home organization hacks you can tackle in 15 minutes

organize face masks

We all have reusable face masks lying around and keeping them tidy can be hard especially if you have a big family. Hanging shower curtain hooks on a rod on the wall by your entryway or clothes hanger in the front hall closet is a great way to store them neatly.

An essential part of putting your home in order is making sure you have the right insurance coverage to protect your property and belongings.

“If you plan to make improvements to your living space while working from home, it’s important to take the time to review your insurance contract with your broker or agent to make sure you have the coverage you need,” says Kristen Gill, head of personal insurance at Aviva Canada.

“For example, if you plan to renovate your basement, consider asking about coverage for basement flooding and how to reduce water damage risk by including a sump pump or backwater valve.”

repurpose cardboard

We’ve all been shopping online more than ever and probably have plenty of extra boxes lying around. Upcycle them by cutting into strips to serve as drawer divider inserts that can organize everything from folded clothes to kitchen utensils.

where to start. To help encourage and inspire you, check out these vegan products anyone can incorporate into their repertoire:

dairy alternatives

There are so many options now when it comes to dairy-free products, making it easy to incorporate into meals. A plant-based butter alternative can be a great way to baste your turkey or add to any side dishes, such as grilled vegetables. The coconut oil in many vegan butters delivers a very smooth, rich and creamy mouth feel. Another great product is a sour cream alternative with coconut cream replacing milk ingredients, which makes the perfect topper for your baked potatoes.

meatless stuffing

Try switching things up for your traditional stuffing by using a meatless crumble. The PC plant-based beefless crumble is an undeniably delicious product that is easy to use in Thanksgiving meals. Made with pea protein rather than ground beef, it provides a strong source of protein that flavours can build on.

Ending the meal with a deep, chocolate homemade brownie will have everyone asking for more.
