EDITORS NOTE

up front HOLIDAY PREP

November is the perfect time to start preparing for the holidays. To make the most of this festive season, here are some suggestions and ideas to get you started. First, consider decorating your home with traditional and modern elements. Incorporate classic colours like red, green, and gold, and add some sparkle with fairy lights and ornaments. Next, plan your holiday menu in advance, including traditional dishes and new recipes. Finally, don’t forget to make a list of gifts for your loved ones and start shopping early to avoid the last-minute rush. With these preparations, you have time to entertain family and friends in December to ensure a memorable and joyful holiday season. Here’s a suggested list of ideas to get you started. • Guest list • Menu • Specialty festive drink list to greet your guests when they arrive • A fun activity list with at least two and no more than four • A list of helpers so you’re not doing all the work • Music for everyone to enjoy From festive games to delicious treats, create something for everyone to participate in and don’t forget silly prizes

for the winner. Whether you’re a child or an adult, the party should have a variety of entertainment options to keep everyone engaged throughout your party. Start with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Let your guest mingle; I’m sure there’s much catching up to do. Once everyone has arrived and is settled, get interactive games going, such as a classic favourite musical chairs with holiday music. Pin the nose on Rudolph. These games are great fun at any age. By now, your guest should be getting hungry – time to eat! Let’s keep this party going with all bellies full. It’s best to keep them moving by planning a holiday scavenger hunt. These games are designed to bring people together and create a festive and lively atmosphere. Whether you’re a competitive spirit or just looking to have some fun, I can guarantee your home will be filled with laughter. In addition to the games, the anticipation of a variety of delicious treats awaits. From traditional holiday cookies to hot cocoa stations, there should be something to satisfy every sweet tooth. The food and drinks should be tasty and beautifully presented, adding to the festive ambiance to your party. Overall, your guests will leave with lasting memories, the greatest gift of all.

GROWING UP IN PUBLIC: COMING OF AGE IN A DIGITAL WORLD AN INVALUABLE BOOK FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY Since social media initial introduction to society nearly 20 years ago, it has drastically changed how today’s children are growing up. This generation of kids are watched and monitored more and face more challenges than generations who grew up before the dawn of social media likes, follows, and instant uploads. Until now, there hasn’t been a resource manual for parents, educators, caregivers, and youth to turn to help them navigate through this confusing, often overwhelming, and continually changing social media web verse. Devorah Heitner is changing that. Her new book Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World provides in invaluable information about social media and its effects on today’s younger generation. Backed by extensive research and a thorough knowledge of the field, Heitner uses current statistics and real life examples to clearly explain each social media related topic, how it can positively and negatively affect children starting at 11 years of age and up and steps parent and educators can take to help guide and support the youth. Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World discusses issues like classroom apps, sharenting and sharing too much information, 6

sexting, stalking posts, tracking children, and setting boundaries. The book also has a chapter dedicated to informing parents and educators how to support kids when they go wrong. Heitner provides several useful tips, explanations, and resources to help parents, caregivers, and educators raise children in this digital age so the younger generation has the knowledge, guidance and respect needed to grow into confident and authentic adults. Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World thoroughly discusses the issues and pressures children face as they navigate through a socially public and digital world of likes, instant notifications, uploads, posts, and texts. Heitner also helps

parents, caregivers, and educators, understand their role when posting stuff online and how these posts and shares can have serious short and long term affects on a child’s mental health. She explains the importance of thinking about a child’s rights when considering what she be posted online, the short and long term effects and the importance to ask for permission from the child first before sharing images, news, or other information. Every child is different and each has their own comfort level when it comes to sharing stuff online. Understanding and respecting these boundaries is crucial to helping children survive and thrive in today’s social media age. The book covers

the effects of this online attention and sharing on tweens, teens, and college students. It is designed for parents, caregivers, and educators but has valuable information for teens and college students as well. Author Devorah Heitner is a media scholar with a Ph.D. in Media/ Technology and Society from Northwestern University and an award winning author. She has over 20 years industry experience and has taught at several universities and colleges. Heitner has been guest speaker and many national and international events and has appeared in the Washington Post, CNN Opinion, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal. Her research and in depth knowledge of social media, digital technology and how it affects youth, parents, and educators is groundbreaking. Heitner wrote this book to answer the ongoing questions and concerns parents voiced as they try to raise their children in this digital world. Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World was launched in September and is currently available in eBook or soft copy form at Indigo and Amazon along with her first book, Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World. cityparent.com

DYNAMIC GRADE 12 STUDENT IS PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE MEALS WITH HER AWARD-WINNING RECIPE WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY Lacia-Paige Cummings is a talented and innovative young adult who is doing her part to protect the planet by educating others on sustainable food options. The grade 12 STEM student recently won a recipe contest by creating a delicious meal using sustainable food options found around her home. The idea to create sustainable and healthy meals was sparked after seeing a poster for the Tre Stelle Cheese4Change contest while attending grade 11 classes. The young sustainability advocate and environmentalist entered the contest because she likes to cook, and it was a great opportunity to learn something new. The Cheese4Change contest is held annually by Arla Foods - Tre Stelle Canada. Each recipe entrant must contain a Tre Stelle cheese as one of its ingredients. Cheese is a highly sustainable food that can be incorporated into many recipes. The contest runs every school year from September to April and is open to all Canadian elementary, secondary, and post-secondary school students, school staff on behalf of their classroom or school, and school board, trustee or committee member entering on behalf of their school. Multiple winners are chosen. Each winner receives $500 and their school group receives a $5,000 grant. 10 CITY PARENT | November 2023

With her mom’s help, Cummings created a salmon and sausage pizza with Tre Stelle feta cheese using leftover ingredients from the fridge and fresh vegetables and herbs from her dad’s home garden. She submitted a video as her contest entry that she developed and edited with her family’s help. Cummings was one of several winners. After winning the contest, she created a healthy menu to promote sustainable meals with her classmates and the public by adding two other recipes created by other contest winners including

caprese skewers and a raspberry ricotta smoothie. Cummings developed an enthusiasm to protect the planet while learning about the earth, global warming, recycling, and composting at school. The more she’s learned about the environment, the more determined she’s become to incorporate as many eco-friendly and sustainable options into her daily routine as possible. Cummings also likes educating others about healthier, eco-friendly choices. While working as a camp counsellor over the summer, she often spoke to the young campers and their parents about healthier and sustainable food preparation like using home grown garden foods and leftovers in recipes. She also encouraged her campers and families

to use reusable containers, bags, and beeswax wrappers instead of single use packaging. She enjoys being an environmental mentor and modelling eco-friendly choices to her friends, family, and community by creating recipes, using reusable food containers, taking the environmentally friendlier transportation options like public transit, and recycling. When she’s not promoting healthier and environmentally sustainable lifestyle and eating habits, Cummings is a competitive dancer, camp counsellor, dance instructor and head of the dance team at her school. She’s won several competitions and choreographs different dance routines for her campers and teammates. Cummings started dancing at the age of four year of age. Her favourite dance styles are hip hop and tap. Along with her impressive dance moves, Cummings speaks three languages, English, French and Spanish and is an honour roll student. She is also a member of the Musical Theatre Club, Black Student Association and Women’s Empowerment Association, and Leadership by Design Program. Cummings is excited to be graduating from high school next June, and has exciting plans for the future. After high school, she plans to go to a French immersion university where she wants to major in Software Engineering and minor in Spanish. She wants to pursue a career in video editing, create more sustainable, healthy meals, and travel. cityparent.com

HOLIDAY SHOPPING FOR THOSE WHO SEEMINGLY HAVE IT ALL Made-for-TV movies often depict holiday shopping in the best possible light. The story’s protagonist wanders into the town centre and easily finds everything on his or her list at a series of perfectly decorated local boutiques that have nary a shopper in sight. Hot chocolate or mulled cider and repartee also tends to be par for the television movie course. People in the real world understand that holiday shopping doesn’t always work so smoothly. Certainly, shopping local is a great way to avoid the crowds and introduce shoppers to more unique gift options, but it’s impossible to remove every obstacle in holiday shopping – particularly getting stumped over shopping for that particularly difficult person on your list. The holly jolly nature of the season can be eclipsed when a person doesn’t know where to begin when shopping for those people who seem to have it all. The following ideas can help shoppers who are stuck on what to buy for that loved one who already has it all. Consider experiences A recent Harris Group study found 72 per cent of millennials prefer to spend money on experiences rather than things. If the person on your shopping 12 CITY PARENT | November 2023

list has just about every material possession one can imagine, giving unique experiences might be the way to go. The National Retail Federation confirms the shift in attitude, noting consumers across all age groups now spend more on experiences than they did in years past. Consolidate memories Technology continues to evolve, which means that the way music, videos and photos are captured and stored is always changing. Unless a person has older gear, it’s no longer possible to watch a VHS tape featuring a family member’s graduation ceremony or reprint photographs that are on film negatives. However, shoppers can work with a company that will transfer media onto a new format, such as a thumb drive or in a cloud-based account. This can be a heartfelt gift for someone who wants to reminisce. Food or beverage subscription Everyone needs to eat (and drink), so there is always a need for tasty offerings. Introduce loved ones to new foods with various subscriptions. If a person is missing flavours from a home country, have delicacies shipped so the recipient can enjoy a taste of their childhood.

Make a family cookbook Enlist the help of other family members and compile beloved family recipes. Utilize a cookbook publishing service to compile all these recipes together. Then gift recipients can revisit their favourites time and again. Trace family lineage If the gift recipient is a history buff or is interested in his or her family tree, then a membership to an

ancestry service could be an ideal gift. Individuals can spend hours uncovering distant relations and studying their family history in the process. Holiday shopping can be challenging when looking for gifts for people who seemingly have it all. A few outside-the-box ideas can make it easier to overcome that challenge. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

parenting DR. LITTLE’S NEW BOOK HELPS PARENTS UNDERSTAND NARCISSISM IN CHILDREN WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY Narcissism is an increasingly common pathological disorder characterized by selfishness, entitlement, lack of empathy, self-centredness, and a sense of superiority. While it is most commonly associated with adults, narcissism often starts in childhood. Because a narcissistic personality disorder cannot be diagnosed until after a person turns 18 years of age, it generally isn’t recognized in children. Most people don’t realize that there are internal structures within children that are developing as they grow. These structures are influenced by their external environment and upbringing.

Narcissism in children is often seen as a positive thing because they exhibit exceptionalism. Many narcissistic children are highly talented in activities like sports or music. They are attractive, socially popular and excel academically. While these are admirable traits, if 14 CITY PARENT | November 2023

children are not taught self-regulation, empathy, how to handle loss, and healthy relationships, they can grow into full blown narcissistic adults. If children show signs of developing a narcissistic personality disorder, their parents often feel discouraged and overwhelmed. They often fear they have done something wrong. Until now, there has been no resources or literature available to help parents understand how certain parenting styles and structures within the child contribute to the development of a full blown disorder or what can be done to help reverse the effects earilier. Adding to the challenges parents face, increased cultural and societal messages promote and glorify narcissistic traits. It’s difficult for parents to insulate their children from these negative messages so children are growing up with them. Dr. Mary Ann Little’s new book Childhood Narcissism: Strategies to Raise Selfish, Unentitled, and Empathetic Children discusses childhood narcissism in great detail. It uses real examples and well researched information to identify and define the different types of narissists and the characteristics associated with each type. Her book also discusses several common parenting styles and provides valuable tips and practical advice for parents and educators to help reduce the risk of children growing up to be narcissistic adults. Childhood Narcissism: Strategies to Raise Selfish, Unentitled, and Empathetic Children is a first of its kind. As a clinical psychologist with

over 40 years’ experience, Dr. Little has been studying narcissism for most of her career. While we all need healthy levels of narcissism, her book helps parents identify unhealthy levels while addressing different patterns and societal beliefs that contribute to the development of a full blown disorder. Childhood Narcissism: Strategies to Raise Selfish, Unentitled, and Empathetic Children was written to help parents feel less overwhelmed and provide them with the knowledge and tools so kids develop into well rounded, healthy, and empathetic adults. She discusses moderation parenting as the best parenting style to prevent narcissism from developing in children. The book not only provides valuable information to help raise healthy children, it also provides valuable information on what can be

done if a child shows signs of growing into a narcissistic adult so the effects can be reversed. Along with a successful private practice, Dr. Little has been a consultant for several educational and psychiatric facilities. She has written several articles and frequently lectures to public and professional audiences. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and the author of Loving Your Children Better: Matching Parenting Styles to the Age and Stage of Your Children and the Competent Kids Series. Childhood Narcissism: Strategies to Raise Selfish, Unentitled, and Empathetic Children is currently available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and IndieBound. HOW TO HONOUR VARIOUS FAITHS DURING A HOLIDAY PARTY The holiday season is a time to gather and celebrate with family. In recent years, families have become more and more diverse, particularly regarding faith. For example, data from the Pew Research Center indicates that 46 per cent of Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 29 are children of interfaith marriages. A greater number of interfaith marriages means it’s likely holiday hosts will be celebrating among family and friends with different religious backgrounds than their own. In an effort to ensure everyone feels welcome, hosts can consider these ways to honour various faiths during their holiday celebrations. Learn about other faiths Knowledge of other faiths can help hosts create a more inclusive and welcoming atmosphere during the holiday season. For example, a Christian host welcoming a Jewish friend or relative into their home for the holidays can learn about the festival of Chanukah prior to opening their home to guests.

food or beverage, a playlist of holiday songs or a small gift such as an ornament to incorporate into holiday decor. Guests can then share as much as they would like to about their faith, including any holiday traditions that they typically engage in.

Incorporate what you’ve learned into the party After learning about the holiday celebrations of other faiths, hosts can incorporate that new knowledge into their decor and celebration. When planning the meal, prepare a traditional holiday dish a guest might eat when celebrating their own faith or culture. This can make for a meal that’s both welcoming and more flavourful at the same time.

Let guests chip in Extended family members and friends from different religious backgrounds may be proud of their faith and enthusiastic about the chance to share it with the people they love most. A holiday gathering is the ideal time to embrace this spirit. Encourage guests from different religious backgrounds to bring something that reminds them of their own religious celebrations. That can be a particular

Reduce emphasis on a particular holiday When hosting friends and family during the holidays, avoid placing too great an emphasis on a particular religious holiday. It’s alright for hosts to offer well wishes and even recite prayers that reflect their faith but try to emphasize how enjoyable it is for everyone to gather under one roof and celebrate the season together. Celebrating with family is a significant component of the holiday season for people of all faiths, so emphasizing togetherness during this special time of year is something all guests will appreciate. Holiday hosts can embrace various strategies to make sure guests from all religious backgrounds feel welcome at their homes this holiday season. – Metro Creative

ACADEMY FOR GIFTED CHILDREN – P.A.C.E. BUILDING THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE

P.A.C.E. caters exclusively to the needs of students who have been identified as intellectually gifted by way of a psychoeducational assessment. P.A.C.E. is based on the premise that gifted children require high-powered learning experiences to challenge their minds and ensure intellectual growth and achievement. Our curriculum is differentiated through various methodologies and strategies (for example: compacting, greater depth and breadth of instruction, acceleration, creative problem solving, inquiry-based learning, addressing critical thinking skills, sophisticated field studies, to name a few). Our students are challenged with additional, advanced content to stimulate their learning potential that goes well beyond Ontario’s standard curriculum.

We train our students to embrace critical and creative thinking, problem solving, research and decision-making in each discipline, while simultaneously addressing their social and emotional needs. We emphasize the importance of strong communication skills and social connections.

In addition to the academic disciplines, P.A.C.E. students excel through their experiences with dynamic field studies, a competitive fine arts program, a comprehensive athletics program and a plethora of national and international competitions.

P.A.C.E. has ranked nationally in math, science and robotics, and in both creative and expository writing competitions. These wonderful opportunities serve as catalysts to the pursuit and achievement of our students’ future goals and successes.

5 WAYS TO ENSURE A GREATER WORK-FAMILY BALANCE Individuals must juggle many different responsibilities on a daily basis. Those with full- or part-time jobs, children, spouses or partners, or aging family members that require assistance, will often find they are pulled in different directions. In many cases, work takes priority over family time because people rely on their jobs for the income that funds their lifestyles. Rather than jeopardizing that income, certain individuals will make time concessions that favour employment over personal relationships and family time. Recent data indicates that many people are trapped in unhealthy work-life balances and can’t find the time to unwind and enjoy themselves. Learning to balance work and life better may come from following these tips. Find more time While there’s no way to add extra hours to the day, you can add extra hours to your schedule. One way to do so is to wake up earlier or stay up later than the household. Some people prefer the quiet time to get things done while others are asleep. If 18 CITY PARENT | November 2023

many events as possible. Put it in the calendar or planner as a must-do. Maximize your PTO Chances are you are entitled to a certain number of days off. Do not squander the opportunity to use these days. It will not make you a hero if you give up on time off. Map out priorities for the next couple of months and see where your time away from work will be needed. Then utilize PTO for these events as well as vacations.

you can afford to shave an hour from your sleeping schedule (provided you already are getting enough), this approach can make a significant difference. Limit distractions as much as possible Distractions pull attention away from tasks and that can make it harder to complete jobs on time. Schedule tasks that require your utmost concentration when others are not

around. Perhaps this means coming into the office during off-peak hours or waiting until a spouse or the kids go to their respective places of work or school before you start on things that require greater concentration. Figure out your home priorities Schedule your home priorities just as you would work meetings and other responsibilities. While you may not be able to attend every sports practice or game, make it a point to get to as

End work at a certain time There is a saying that “work expands to fill the time allotted.” It’s easy to let work infiltrate home time especially for those who are remote workers. Set a distinct end time for the job and reinforce it by turning off your computer or other devices, or physically lock the door to your office. Schedule tasks directly after work that are important to you, so you won’t be tempted to continue working. Finding work-life balance can take time and require breaking established habits, but it is one way to reduce stress and feel more personally satisfied. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

family fun

NOVEMBER IN NIAGARA WORDS BY ANDREW HIND The summer crowds have disappeared, and the air has chilled but Niagara Falls remains a dramatic destination for a weekend family escape. Here are five family-friendly appeals. Niagara Power Station Tour The Niagara Power Station, more than a century old, has been opened for tours. The highlight is the opportunity to descend 60 metres into the heart of the facility, viewing giant watergenerating turbines on the trip down. At the bottom, you emerge into a 670-metre tunnel, where rushing water once flowed through and back into the lower Niagara River. Walk along the 700-metre, brick-lined tunnel to an observation deck overlooking the Niagara River. The view is stunning, the sound thunderous, the experience memorable. niagaraparks.com

Niagara SkyWheel Enjoy unparalleled views of frosty Niagara Falls from Clifton Hill’s Niagara SkyWheel, Canada’s largest observation wheel. It towers 53 metres above the landscape. During the day, the wheel offers 20 CITY PARENT | November 2023

stunning views of the Canadian and American Falls, the Niagara River, and of Niagara’s many attractions. At night, rides offer dazzling views of the glittering lights of Clifton Hill and the Niagara skyline. Gondolas are fully climate-controlled, ensuring the ten-minute ride is as comfortable as it is picturesque. cliftonhill.com/attractions/ niagara-skywheel Winter Festival of Lights Niagara’s Winter Festival of Lights, Canada’s largest free outdoor light festival, has been a holiday tradition for more than 40 years. What few realize is that the event begins in November (and extends as late as February). Dozens of larger-than-life displays - including a 60-foot-long

light tunnel – run along Fallsview Blvd, Murray Street and the Niagara Parkway from Queen Victoria Place to the Floral Showcase. wfol.com

with the House of Horrors, an optional experience at the end of your experience. Are you brave enough to enter? cliftonhill.com

Movieland Wax Museum of the Stars Several wax museums compete for our attention on Clifton Hill. One of the more popular museums is the Movieland Wax Museum of the Stars. Here, you meet actors, singers, and film characters. Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake share space with Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones, legends like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, superheroes Iron Man and Thor, and iconic cinema enemies such as the Terminator. Halloween has just passed, but the eerie thrill of the holiday endures

Bird Kingdom Bird Kingdom is the world’s largest free-flying indoor aviary. Enjoy the sights and sounds of hundreds of brilliantly feathered tropical birds as you explore the paths of this three-level rainforest. The highlight is stepping into Lorikeet Landing where you can feed – and serve as an improvised roost – for dozens of cheerful lorikeet birds. Don’t overlook the Night Jungle experience, where you meet creepy crawlers that emerge from their hidden recesses once night settles over the jungle. birdkingdom.com cityparent.com
