PLANNING FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Hello, November! As the beautiful fall colours slowly fade into the ground, out comes the busiest season. Planning, decorating, baking, and shopping. Who’s exhausted already? Just thinking about the holiday season can be overwhelming and stressful. Here are some helpful hints to help you plow right through it all and enjoy the season.
Preparation is key! Schedule specific shopping, decorating, baking, and social activities.
Start with decorating. It’s the most motivating to face the holidays and all the hoopla. Add festive music and a glass of your favourite beverage and get going. You could even start a new tradition and invite some of your close friends to help and have fun doing it. You may even want to drop a hint for an invitation to do likewise. Keep it simple. Overdoing it with decorations will leave you more work when the holiday season is over.
Make a list of who you need to buy for and check it twice. Take into consideration any items you can buy online. This will save you tons of time. Make sure to cross them off your list as you move along. A short list will always
help you feel better and show visible progress. Choose a time that works best for you to get that wrapping done, and ensure you have plenty of tape, wrapping paper, and more. Keep your calendar nearby and book any events, so you don’t end up double booking. Make a note of what you’re going to wear even though you know this is liable to change a few times.
Buy all your baking supplies and bake, bake, bake. Ideally, choose baked goods you can freeze and store in advance.
Plan your menus and make your shopping list. You’ll avoid any anxiety over overlooked ingredients and other essentials, such as orange juice for a holiday breakfast mimosa.
Enjoy the holidays to the fullest. Take advantage of the season, and don’t let them become something you dread. Instead of dealing with the stresses, take steps to prevent them. Holidays can be joyful and peaceful if you plan and think positively. Best of all, if you can, give yourself the best gift of all and book that vacation you deserve. January is always full of great deals.

And the 2022 RevolutionHER Impact award in Leadership goes – Toronto’s Dr. Larissa Vingilis-Jaremko, founder and president of the Canadian Association for Girls in Science (CAGIS).
Since 2013, RevolutionHER has recognized over 3,000 women and youth and granted over $200,000 in combined bursaries, mentorships, services, and promotions to its winners. The Leadership Award recognizes leaders who exemplify community leadership and who have made an impact by advocating and inspiring others.
In Canada, when you think about who in the field of science, technology, trades, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) would meet this criterion, there is no other worthy candidate than Dr. Larissa Vingilis-Jaremko. Today, Larissa is the founder and president of CAGIS, the largest and longest-running STEM club for girls, non-binary, and gender nonconforming youth aged seven to 16 that explores the world of STEM with fun and hands-on activities led by experts.
Growing up, Larissa noticed the girls in her class avoided sciences and maths. “They thought they
women in STEM
REVOLUTIONHER
MARYLENE VESTERGOMweren’t smart enough, and with the absence of role models, they lacked the encouragement and confidence to entertain potential careers as engineers or scientists. They had negative, stereotyped images of STEM professionals – scientists as old men with messy white hair and lab coats.”
Whereas Larissa had the influence of her parents, a scientist and engineer, she knew those stereotyped images of STEM professionals weren’t true. She wanted to expose girls to diverse role models, break stereotypes and share the excitement of STEM.
In 1992, at the age of nine, she started a small, local group of 20 girls and quickly expanded to a national not-for-profit organization with chapters across Canada.
Larissa created a movement that not only drew awareness on issues relating to gender equity in STEM but created a safe space where the entire trajectory of possible career paths opened up.
Young girls started to get excited about the sciences, technology, trades, engineering and mathematics.
Through CAGIS, they met women who were making a difference in the STEM field and sharing their experiences.
This year, CAGIS is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the announcement of the CAGIS Youth STEM Award Winners. The awards recognized the outstanding achievements of girls aged 7-17 in Canada who have exhibited excellence in STEM innovation, equity, or communication. This year’s winners included:
Synapse Award for Innovation Seismic Impact Award for Equity
Vignesh, Supernova Award for Communication
Although humbled to receive the RevolutionHER award for Leadership, Larissa says this award belongs to the countless volunteers and staff who, for over the past 30 years, have supported CAGIS and empowered a new generation of youth seeking a more equitable future in STEM.
In March 2022, Randstad, a global leader in the HR services industry,
released a study indicating that women in Canada make up less than 25 per cent of people employed in STEM careers.
“Children are inundated with stereotypical portrayals of STEM experts in the media and society. These stereotypes can shape children’s perceptions of STEM experts and their interest in entering we can support interest in STEM among underrepresented groups through fun, hands-on activities, visits to cool STEM locations, access to role models, and mentorship – all elements CAGIS uses in its programming.”
If there is an “Aha!” moment for girls, it’s knowing that CAGIS is a club they can join where they can meet other like-minded girls, and “acquire the confidence, the skills, and the knowledge to feel comfortable with science, technology, trades, engineering and mathematics, and pursue their interests, whatever they may be.”

WORLD PREMATURITY AWARENESS DAY UNDERSCORES NEED FOR DONOR MILK AMID FORMULA SHORTAGES
November 17, recognized annually as World Prematurity Awareness Day, is dedicated to spotlighting, and raising awareness of premature births and babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Each year, nearly 15 million babies are born prematurely, and as a result, can face life-long health issues and challenges. Compared to full-term infants, preterm babies need more intensive care, medication and, in some cases, surgery.
Additionally, many premature babies rely on donor breast milk in their first few days or weeks of life, as their moms’ body may not yet produce breast milk given the preterm birth. Breast milk is particularly benefi cial for preterm babies’ development, providing nutrients to help them grow and potentially prevent serious illness and infections associated with preterm birth.
As the effects of global supply chain issues have continued to impact families, donor breast milk banks have experienced an uptick in demand due to the shortage of baby formula. Many families, not just those with children in the NICU, have turned to milk banks to help provide the necessary nutrients their babies need. In 2021, the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA)’s 31 milk banks collectively dispensed 9.2 million ounces (roughly 720,000 gallons) of milk, up 22 per cent from 2020, and that number is expected to have risen even more in 2022 due to the formula shortages.
Medela, the most trusted breast pump brand, launched the #MomsUnite4Milk campaign, a pump-a-thon and education effort to support moms and families impacted by the national formula and donor milk shortage. Through
the campaign, Medela is providing breast milk storage bags to moms who agree to donate their milk to a nonprofit milk bank. To date, more than 50,000 ounces have been donated to milk banks across North America.
In addition, Medela has donated $25,000 USD, benefiting 11 nonprofit milk banks across North America. Medela’s monetary donation will help to further the important role that milk banks have in supporting this national issue, finding more milk donors, and increasing capacity at their locations.
“Families need support now, and we’re committed to doing what we can to address this crisis,” explains Jeff Castillo, executive vice president for the Americas at Medela. “Through this pump-a-thon, we are offering breast milk bags and educational resources for those who want to donate their breast milk. Medela is
also offering support to nonprofit milk banks so they can continue to serve the community of families who rely on them to provide the essential nutrition they need for their baby.”
If you’re concerned about the safety or legitimacy of donor milk, there’s no need: donors are screened and blood tested prior to donation, and the donor milk is both pasteurized and tested for communicable diseases before being added to a milk bank’s frozen inventory prior to distribution. For those who may not be near a milk bank, many milk banks will provide pre-paid, insulated boxes to allow moms to ship milk to help others in need.
If you want to learn more about Medela’s #MomsUnited4Milk campaign, their commitment to helping new mothers and families in need and how you can get involved, visit medela.us/breastfeeding/ supporting-moms.

First Light AT SAINTE-MARIE AMONG THE HURONS
WORDS BY ANDREW HINDSainte-Marie among the Hurons a National Historic Site that recreates the headquarters of a 17th century French Jesuit mission, has a special place in Canadian yuletide lore.
It was here, more than 350 years ago, that the first Christmas in Ontario was celebrated by the handful of priests and their attendants who formed this isolated community. It was also here that the famous Huron Carol was written around 1641. The carol was most likely the first Christmas song written in North America and is certainly the only internationally known carol taken from Indigenous languages.
On weekend evenings in late November and early December, SainteMarie shines with the glow of Christmas Spirit and more than 2,000 candles during its annual ‘First Light’ event.
Entering through the front gates, you’re immediately transported back in time to the mid-1600s, perhaps to the very evening that the Huron Carol was first sung. The ringing of
hammer on anvil lures visitors to the smithy, where the resident blacksmith demonstrates his skill. The fire in his forge leaps into the darkened sky.
Carols danced upon the snowlaced breeze, bringing back nostalgic memories of homes filled with loved ones and brimming with festive cheer.
Follow them to enjoy the heavenly tunes of community choirs and the talents of Franco-Ontarian and First Nation entertainers.
Follow your nose to the bakery for delights of a different kind, while a nativity crèche, appropriately situated in the stables, remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.
First Light features hands-on activities to entertain children. Tiny hands can make their own cards with old-fashioned quill pens or craft a cornhusk doll as the Huron people would have done almost 400 years ago.

discovery LEARN TO PLAY
WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOMFred Rogers, commonly known as Mister Rogers of the famed children’s program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, once said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
Susie Beghin couldn’t agree more. With 20 years of experience as an early childhood educator and owner of Alpha’s Discovery Kids Preschool and Daycare, Beghin saw firsthand how Play is integral to children’s early development. With this learning, she developed a unique educationfocused curriculum called The Four Pillars of Learning which includes: Language and Literacy, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), Physical Activity and Nutrition and Mindful Awareness.
In her new book Learn to Play: The Four Pillars Learning System, Beghin provides specific strategies for each learning pillar on building those skills as well as provide play activities – by age group, from infants to preschoolers. The pillars can be taught independently, but Beghin says the real benefit comes when you combine them and put them into action.
Did you know that children between the ages of 0 to 6 learn more in those early years than they ever will again in their lives?
“The information in Learn to Play is the curriculum currently used in the childcare setting at Alpha’s Discovery Kids Preschool and Daycare to plan and guide the learning, with much success. I wanted to share this learning and teaching method with parents as a tool for learning at home.”
Learn to Play has been carefully written to help parents navigate their way to the various activities. To keep things simple for parents
to implement, Beghin has provided sample activities for each pillar within each age group from infant to preschool, with considerations for children with special needs. “The sample activities are a starting point so parents can implement what they learn right away. Once they get started, the ideas will start to flow as they engage with their kids.”
“I think most parents don’t realize that they are the child’s number one educator. Sometimes, we think that the real educators are in the schools or daycares. But I would suggest that the parent is THE number one educator for their children. I saw parents struggling during the pandemic when they were primarily responsible for their children’s education. Even though parents may have the best intentions and rely on parenting instincts, they don’t have the knowledge, leaving them feeling
guilty, frustrated, and lost. Learn to Play is a tool they can use – their roadmap to success.”
Play is really the work of childhood.
Consider the research conducted by the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, Director of Texas Christian University’s Child Development Center, where scientists discovered it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain – unless it is done with Play, in which case, it takes between 10 and 20 repetitions!”
“Play is how children learn about the world around them,” Beghin adds, “Many people mistakenly think that play is not important; it’s a recreational activity. Fred Rogers understood that play is equivalent to what adults consider to be ‘work’. For kids, play is the basis for their learning. Learn to Play is my life’s work. My mission is to give children the best start in life.”
Resources: Alpha’s Discovery Kids Preschool and Daycare. alphasdiscoveryclub.com
“MANY PEOPLE MISTAKENLY THINK THAT PLAY IS NOT IMPORTANT; IT’S A RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY. FRED ROGERS UNDERSTOOD THAT PLAY IS EQUIVALENT TO WHAT ADULTS CONSIDER TO BE ‘WORK’.“

THEATRE BURLINGTON , an award-winning community group of volunteers that love live theatre, are entering their 70th year of bringing live theatre to the Burlington area. We are fortunate to have our own space adjoining the Teen Tour Band building in Central Park, New St. Burlington. We have been producing a yearly dedicated play for children since 1960, always keeping the cost affordable. This year we are keeping the pre-pandemic cost of $10.00. Our children’s productions are designed for the little ones to experience live theatre in an up close, friendly theatre setting with colourful costumes, sets and lighting. The children usually sit up front on mats while caregivers use the regular chairs. The productions run for one hour – about as long as little ones want to stay in one place. No food or drinks are permitted in the theatre. theatreburlington.on.ca
