It’s such an everyday object that we always don’t think about it much, but a kitchen’s faucet is one of the first places the eye lands on as someone enters the room. Make a good first impression by simply swapping it out for a fresh one. A flowing, statuesque design will catch the eye while conveying high value. Consider modern features like Touch2O, that lets the faucet turn on with a simple tap anywhere on it. A faucet with a Lumicoat finish will resist mineral buildup, keeping up an effortlessly shining display. Find more information at deltafaucet.ca. ■ — News Canada October 27–November 10, 2023

5 tips for

important than ever for us to become financially literate. Here are 5 money saving tips to help keep you afloat.
build a budget
The first step towards financial security is to create a budget
that you can stick to. Your budget should track all of your income and expenses, including food, housing, transportation and entertainment. If your monthly expenses exceed your income, you’ll either need to cut back on spending or find ways to bring more money in.
13
FINANCE
Hold off on purchasing bigger ticket items until they go on sale. Most retailers have recurring sales promotions on certain items a daily indulgence that makes you happy, look for other small ways to cut back that can add up to big savings.
avoid high-interest payments
cut back on frivolous spending
It’s become a bit of a cliché to advise people to stop buying takeout coffees to save money. And it’s true: with tax and tip a coffee can easily cost $5 to $10. But don’t make yourself miserable. If that cup of java is
Credit cards are a handy way to pay for things and can even earn you cash back or other rewards. But the interest rate on credit cards is very high, often 20 per cent or more. And, if you don’t pay off your full balance monthly, the interest is charged from the date of purchase. If you can’t pay your credit card bills in full, see if you qualify for a line of credit. These have much lower interest rates so you can start paying down your debt.
use coupons
Using coupons is a great way to lower the cost of staple items such as
groceries, diapers, personal hygiene products or to splurge on an occasional fast-food treat. In addition to the printed coupons that come in the mail or newspapers, there are numerous online resources for coupon clipping.
shop on sale
Hold off on purchasing bigger ticket items until they go on sale. Most retailers have recurring sales promotions on certain items. A sales associate may be able to let you know when the next cycle will start. And make note of upcoming seasonal sale periods such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Replacing your cabinets is pricey and messy. But you’ll amaze yourself
with how much personality a fresh coat of paint can add to your kitchen. Brighten up dark doors to create a bright, clean and airy feel. Take plain white cabinets and drawers, and paint on a layer of mahogany sophistication. Feeling bold? Paint with a bright accent colour like red or blue

DIY that makes an impact doesn’t have to mean everything but the kitchen sink. A new faucet is easy to install, and it can make a surprising difference to the feel of your kitchen. Look for one that matches form with function: a pull-down faucet will let you more easily keep the sink pristine, and if it uses Delta’s Touch2O, you can turn it on with a tap anywhere on the faucet and avoid messy handles during meal prep. nless you’re living in a seven-bedroom mansion, chances are you’re like most Canadians: trying to make the most of your small living space. From studio apartments to three-bedroom family homes, most of us are craving more space, particularly when home is also the office. Maximizing your small space to include an office is not an insurmountable challenge. With the right tools

and a little planning, you can bring the benefits of a much larger space to wherever you work.
invest in an ergonomic chair
Considering this is where you’ll be sitting for eight hours a day, investing in the right chair is crucial. Find something with various controls so you’re at a comfortable height, with feet flat on the floor and elbows and wrists straight when typing.
Though you may love the look of something larger, chances are you can make do with a compact desk. Measure your workstation and see what makes sense, taking into account the space you want versus what you actually need. Pro tip: an adjustable standing desk can give you the option to stretch your legs throughout the day.
clear the clutter
Extra pens and pencils, papers, folders, and empty coffee mugs and dishes… when you’re working in a small space, every item takes up room both physically and mentally. Combine regular work breaks with bringing dishes to the kitchen and store loose items in a box or drawer.
put two screens in one
Multiple screens were great at the office, but at home, it’s rare to have
the space for extra monitors. The LG UltraWide monitor has a single stand and curved screen which can show multiple windows at once, making it easier for you to multitask at work.
make use of sleek backgrounds
By now, we’ve all seen the hilarious (and not-so-hilarious) backgrounds available for virtual calls. While they can be entertaining, they also serve a helpful purpose: hiding your unmade bed, scattered kid toys and dirty dishes. Using your space wisely will contribute to a more relaxing and productive work environment, so that at the end of the day you can reconnect with family, friends or your adorable pup. kid-friendly moves
BY CHUCK RESNICK
Moving can be stressful for children. The change can be overwhelming, but there are ways to make it easier on them. It’s important to inform your kids about the family’s plans to move as soon as you can. The more preparation time they have, the easier it will be for them, say child psychologists.
M
oving is a family process so share the excitement and responsibilities with every member of the family. Give everyone an age-appropriate responsibility. Kids will enjoy decorating our moving boxes. And when you are in your new home, it will be easier for them to find their stuff. If kids feel included and take ownership of their new home decision, the transition will go much easier.
Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time. Throughout the move, stay as upbeat and calm as possible. Give your children a chance to express their feelings and try to be honest about your own feelings. Most children will feel some anger, sadness or may worry about the move. Reassure them they aren’t alone and it’s OK to have these feelings. Involve your kids in the packing process and start packing items you will not need ahead of time.
