And that!” I’ll admit, when I moved into my first apartment I got a little excited and, despite budget restraints (zero budget), I went a little crazy with what I considered investments.

It’s not that all the items in my apartment are totally useless. It just took me some time to figure out they don’t all fit with my kind of lifestyle. Still, I like to think I’m not the only

INFO YOU CAN USE

I have very limited space, yet still enough space to constantly be asking myself “Why did I buy this?”

eleptical

Everyone who owns a piece of exercise equipment knows they don’t use it half as much as they should. Then there’s the fact I’m constantly bumping into it when I get out of bed in the morning.

king size bed

About 2/3 of the furniture I assembled from IKEA seemed a lot smaller online then in my actual rental. Now my bedroom looks like it could belong to Shrek.

luxury kitchen appliances one to blame. Seriously, no one could have warned me not to buy any of these seven ridiculous items?

sound system

Besides the fact I would actually like to be on good terms with my neighbours, a sound system is just not at all necessary for my tiny apartment. Let’s face it, the sound from my iPhone speakers reach from the kitchen to my bathroom just fine.

Kitchen appliances like a blender, Vitamix, and KitchenAid, I consider a luxury because you have to have the luxury of having a decent amount of counter and cupboard space to be able to use and store any of these items. Do you know how many different produces go into a Martha Stewart smoothie?

decorative pillows

How many pillows can you fit onto one sofa? The answer is a lot! The pillows look great. The only thing is I’m

constantly looking for space to place all these pillows when it comes the time to sit on the only couch in my apartment. If you haven’t guessed yet – it happens a lot.

lounge chair

Summertime is so short. You better believe I invested in a stateof-the-art lounge chair to make the most of my balcony. The only thing is, the lounge chair is now the only thing that fits on my balcony. Any suggestions on where to store a lounge chair now that it’s winter?

vacuum cleaner

I really had the best intentions to keep my rental as clean as possible when I moved in. Of course, that meant I had to invest in the right cleaning appliances. The thing is when you have a small space, ends up your cutting edge vaccum cleaner doesn’t fit under any of the funiture and appliances which take up like 90 percent of your space. Just one more 12 pound item for me to store. Now, I wonder how much I can sell these items on Kijiji for... ■

5 ways to enjoy

meals for one T

here are more one-person households in Canada than any other kind, according to the most recent census. While living alone might be a choice, it may also be the result of a life change, such as losing a spouse or relocating. But experts say it can be a positive experience that allows us to enjoy our own company. As the stomach is known as a window to the heart, meal prep offers easy opportunities for self-fulfillment. Here are some tips for helping this happen: Plan ahead. Take time to review your schedule and understand your needs for the week. Once these details are confirmed, you will be bet-

ter suited to plan. Make note of when you’d like to eat out or order in. Shop smart. Once you plan your meals, make a list with the required quantities. Shopping smart means buying items that will last all week and just enough to ensure nothing spoils. Keeping a balance of canned, frozen and fresh foods will help you get the most out of your food. Prep ahead. Pick one day to prepare core meal items for the week.

Investing time up front greatly cuts down the overall time needed. For example, if you’re a dessert lover, make cookie dough in advance and freeze single cookie-sized portions. Treat yourself. Pick a day each week to create an experience. Make your meal an event and create a beautiful place-setting with your favourite flowers and music. You could treat yourself and order in. Invite a friend. Plan a get-together with friends and family. Much like eating a balanced meal is good for your body, finding a balance between the joys of eating alone and with others is good for your emotional health. Look for opportunities to share the experience. ■ — News Canada

TIPS

16

simple tips for successful S

low cookers can be found in many homes. Slow cookers are great for busy individuals who prefer to prepare meals in advance and then arrive home in the evening to a hot, homecooked meal. People new to slow cookers may want to gain some knowledge before diving in to improve their chances of preparing tasty meals. The following are some slow cooker tips that can benefit home chefs.

4Rent.ca

October 27–November 10, 2023

• Treat the slow cooker like an oven and preheat it. Putting food into an already warmed crock can make the difference in cooking time and taste. • Choose the right cuts of meat to use in the slow cooker. Lean toward chuck roasts, short ribs, pork shoulders, and lamb shanks. Fatty and tougher meats will tenderize nicely with the moist, low heat of a slow cooker. When slow cooking poultry,

choose dark meats, which tend to respond better to slow cooking. • Take the time to brown meat for a couple of minutes and sauté vegetables before adding them to the crock. This will provide a deeper layer of flavour. • Many manufacturers recommend filling the crocks inside a slow cooker no more than two-thirds full. This helps ensure food is cooked all the way through and prevents potential food-safety hazards.

17

TIPS

slow cooking • Begin with room-temperature meat. As with other cooking methods, let meat come to room temperature rather than using it straight from the refrigerator to ensure juicy, flavorful meals. • The Food Network suggests layering carefully and first cutting food into uniform-size pieces. Then place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top.

• Adjust seasoning as the meal nears completion. Some seasonings may lose their punch during the slow cooking process. At just the end of simmering, add fresh herbs and salt and pepper to taste. Similarly, dairy can break down in the slow cooker, so stir it in during the last 15 minutes of cooking. • Do not add frozen ingredients to the slow cooker, as it can keep food in the danger zone where bacteria can

flourish (40 to 140 F). Therefore, make sure meat and vegetables are fully thawed before turning the cooker on. • Use wine judiciously because the alcohol will not evaporate as readily in a sealed slow cooker. • Resist the urge to take off the lid and peek. This can increase the amount of time the meal will need to finish cooking. With some handy tips, anyone can become a slow cooking expert. ■ — Metro Creative 4Rent.ca

seniors BY CHUCK RESNICK

RentersCLASSIFIED.CA January 8-22, 2011 4Rent.ca October 27–November 10, 2023

23

M

oving an elderly loved one can be tough. No one wants to upset that person and everyone wants the move to go as smoothly as possible. This can seem like mission impossible. The children and families of the Baby Boomer generation – people born between 1946 and 1960 – are already helping their loved ones move into downsized or elderly assistance accommodations and often are not emotionally prepared for the task at hand. Senior loved ones can be very set in their ways and often are not well equipped to express their emotional frustrations in a constructive way as moving day draws closer. It all can seem like a daunting task. Over the years, we have packed and moved many seniors and the important thing is to stay organized, be patient, calm and respectful throughout the entire moving process. If you are moving a senior loved one into a retirement facility or a condo, you should first contact the management to find out what they are allowed to bring in, appropriate moving hours and if they have any tips specific to their facility to help smooth the moving process. Remember the following:

organize, begin packing weeks in advance

If your loved one is moving from a large home to a one-bedroom condo, there will be more furniture than needed. Get a floor plan of the new space and help your senior plan the space with their favourite furnishings, then help them decide what to do with the left overs. If the item is a family heirloom and cannot be accommodated in the new space, suggest giving it to a close family member like a favourite grandchild.

sort before you pack

Seniors tend to collect things they don’t need or use. Be sensitive when suggesting to get rid of possessions. Ask if they use the item and if they would mind if you donated it to raise money for the Salvation Army, for example. Start packing early to avoid feeling overwhelmed as moving day draws closer.

pack, clean as you go

When helping sort and pack your senior’s belongings keep in mind that their eyesight and reduced mobility prevents them from doing regular chores and can result in poor housekeeping habits. Instead of commenting, offer to clean as you pack and try not to be judgmental.

you will need more time than you think

Allow enough time so your loved one doesn’t feel rushed. Sorting through years of stuff is difficult and sometimes emotionally painful. Allow your loved one time to say goodbye. If they take longer to clean out the desk drawer because they found a stack of pictures, let them take the time to walk down memory lane. This is a very important part of the process. Be patient and listen to their life stories, there will come a time you will be glad you did.

wrap small items in coloured paper

This prevents items like knickknacks from becoming lost or mistakenly thrown out.

label boxes on top and sides

Make sure to mark the top and sides of boxes as they’re packed and write in large letters to make it easier

MOVERS

for your loved one to read. Make sure to label boxes containing breakable or sentimental items as ‘fragile’.

pack all electronics in the original boxes

Otherwise, use low-static bubble wrap when packing these items.

use packing paper

When wrapping fine china and precious items, do not use newsprint because the ink can bleed.

seal with packing tape

This makes it easier to stack and protect your senior’s belongings.

use boxes designed for items you are packing

Invest in dish packs for dishes and wardrobe boxes for clothing. Wardrobe boxes make it easy for seniors to access their clothing on hangers.

check unwanted clothing before donating

It’s a good idea to sort unwanted clothing for donation prior to moving. Before donating any gently worn unwanted clothing, check pockets for valuables. Seniors often hide small valuable items like jewelry or cash in the pockets of suit jackets or shoes and forget where they hid it.

make your loved one’s new space feel familiar

Take pictures and colour samples of the inside of their current home. Try to decorate the new space and place objects in a similar way, so that their new space will feel like the old one. Be as detailed as you can, from arranging the bedroom furniture to placing family pictures on the bureau. This will help make the new surroundings feel like home. n

evicted

do this and you’re going to get

H

ave you ever seen your neighbour do something so ridiculous you wondered, “Is he trying to get evicted?” We’ve all had a lack of judgment at one point or another, but there are some actions that could seriously jeopardize your current lease. If you are actually doing this in an attempt to get out of your rental agreement, note that you do not want an eviction notice on your record. Instead, talk with your landlord to try and break your lease or look for someone to sublet your apartment. If you actually love where you live and you want to stay (I hope you do), don’t say I didn’t warn you. If you’re doing any of these things, you’re asking to get evicted.

cash flow… slow, slow, slow

Non-payment of rent is the most obvious reason for an eviction, but your landlord can also file to have you evicted for habitual late payments. Get your cash flow situation in check, stop buying shoes and pay your landlord on time.

rule breaker

Hiding that stray cat in your room when you were nine didn’t work, so don’t think you can get away with having an English Bulldog in your non-pet-friendly apartment. It may seem like you’re only breaking a small regulation, but if it’s listed in your lease agreement and you’re breaking it, it could be enough to have you evicted in some provinces. Letting it jump all over neighbours, not picking up after it and letting it cause property damage will definitely get you evicted in all provinces.

are you alone in there?

Your friend was only supposed to crash at your place for a week, but next thing you know a week becomes a month and all of a sudden he’s living with you. It’s not a big deal until your landlord finds out. The name of everyone who is living in your rental should be listed on your lease agree-

ment. If not, your friend might not be the only one who’s looking for a place to crash.

damage control

Things break, I get it. I know that wine stain on the carpet was an accident and you didn’t mean to rip the shower curtains. What I really want to talk to you about is that hole in the wall, which is the size of my head! I don’t even want to know how it happened, just pay to get it fixed or it can get you evicted.

EXTRAS

We’ve all had a lack of judgment at one point or another, but there are some actions that could seriously jeopardize your current lease.

noise pollution

Break-ups are tough, but it’s been two months, Johnny! The neighbours can’t deal anymore with the outrageously loud crying session, followed by an hour of heavy metal music and your rendition of Shakespeare. There is never a good reason to disturb the other tenants in your building and it could be enough to have you kicked out. ■ — Jennifer Braun October 27–November 10, 2023
