how to talk to kids about

Come Halloween, youngsters’ attentions are understand ably focused on costumes and candy. Their parents, however, are likely more concerned with their kids’ safety.

Trick-or-treating kids might not pay much mind to safety. As a result, it can be hard for parents to get kids to grasp the importance of being safe on Halloween. The following strategies might make that task easier.

• Discuss costumes well in advance of Halloween. Many kids are so enthusiastic about Halloween that they know which costumes they hope to wear long before October 31. Parents can discuss potential costumes well in advance of Hal loween before kids even know what they want to wear. Doing so gives parents a chance to encourage kids to choose bright costumes that will make them more visible to drivers

on Halloween night. Waiting to dis cuss costumes increases the likeli hood that kids will already have an outfit in mind, making it harder for parents to convince them to choose something safe.

• Explain that some tailoring might be necessary to make gathering all that candy a lot easier. Superman doesn’t trip on his cape in the movies, and youngsters dressed up as the Man of Steel shouldn’t trip on their capes,

Halloween safety

either. When kids pick costumes, ex plain to them that you might need to do some tailoring before they go trick-or-treating. Explain to kids that costumes should be trip-proof so they can seamlessly go from house to house in search of their favorite goodies.

• Create a bag or bucket design day. Depending on what kids will use to carry the candy they accumulate this Halloween, parents can plan a bag

or bucket design day a few days in advance. Kids will enjoy this chance to get in the Halloween spirit, and parents can encourage youngsters to decorate their bags and buckets with reflective tape that will make them more visible to drivers.

• Talk up trick-or-treating with friends. As Halloween approaches, parents can discuss how much fun kids will have going door-to-door with many of their friends. This is a good way

to ensure kids trick-or-treat in large groups, making them more visible to drivers. In addition, kids trickor-treating in large groups might be too busy joking with their friends to notice when one or two parents tag along as chaperones.

Parents can discuss Halloween safety with their children in ways that make it fun to be safe while trick-ortreating.

how to get your house organized this fall

There’s

something about the fresh autumn air, changing leaves and kids settling into schoolyard rhythms that make many of us feel like it’s time to restore order to the home. Here are some steps to remember for an easy and comprehensive clean out.

review your systems

Everyone has their own way of or ganizing; maybe your method was a set of rules you learned from your parents, or maybe you developed a haphazard process out of sheer ne cessity. Either way, take some time to

evaluate what’s working for you now and what isn’t doing you any favours at this point in your life. You may be surprised at how much better your system becomes.

cut down on the clutter

The less stuff you have, the less messy things can get, and the less you must clean and organize. So, take stock of what you own and what you need, and then get rid of what you don’t want or require. While a fam ily with young kids will amass more stuff than a retiree who lives on their own, the principle remains the same

and can make organizing easier in the long run.

don’t forget your digital life

It’s easy to miss organizing the in tangible aspects of the home like your online accounts or the apps on your phone. Regularly taking the time to check on your accounts, update any weak or repeated passwords, and update your software and operating systems will help protect you from cyber threats like phishing.

timely tips realize your

Atthe dawn of a new year, many people set goals to mo tivate themselves to change. But as January 1 drifts further into the rear-view mirror, it can be easy to settle into old habits and forget about the resolutions and goals established at the turn of the calendar.

Staying on course and achieving one’s goals requires discipline. In addition to working hard, men and women who want to realize their goals in the year ahead can take sev eral steps to increase their chances of being successful.

be specific in regard to planning

Being specific when choosing goals is important, but it’s equally important to be as specific as pos sible in regard to developing a plan to realize those goals. Before embarking on a journey to realize your goals, figure out how you’re going to achieve them. Create a new daily or weekly schedule that allots time to realize your goals, seek ing input from loved ones whose lives may be affected by your new schedule.

make note of potential obstacles

Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achiev ing your goals. For example, those hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Rec ognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, people can choose veg

goals in the year ahead

etarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

start small, but start immediately

Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immedi ately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved

ones will adjust to the changes neces sary to realize your goals.

examine your priorities

Achieving goals is easier when their goals can be among your biggest priorities. Examine your priorities to determine if you can fully com mit to goals that may require significant time commit ments. Men and wom en who are already stretched thin may need to recalibrate their goals or make changes in other ar

eas of their lives before they can fully commit to pursuing new goals.

The dawn of a new year is a great time to set new goals. Bringing those goals to fruition requires careful planning and commitment. ■

living togethertips for

Contrary to what you may think, there are similarities between living with a roommate and someone you’re involved with romantically. Your approach should reflect what it would in any interpersonal relationship. Be considerate of the other person’s needs and strive for good communication to encourage equity and fairness in your living arrangement.

22 4Rent.ca October 28–November 11, 2022 TIPS

FURNISHING

The first issue you’ll need to ad dress if you decide to live with some one is how the apartment will be fur nished. One – or both – of you may have furniture. Whose stuff do you keep and whose stuff gets stored or sold? Conversely, you may need to acquire a lot of the furnishings and housewares you’ll need to live in your apartment. Discuss how you will make decorating decisions and purchases. If you provide something, and your roommate or a guest dam ages something, who would be re sponsible? If you share the costs, who gets it if and when you move on?

EXPENSES

As roommates, discuss how you will pay the rent. Will one person make the payment each month and the other pay the roommate half the amount? Will the landlord take cheques from each? Or will you use another arrangement? If a last month’s rent deposit is required, it’s easier if each tenant puts up half, in case one person wants to move out before the other. And moving out should have its stipulations too, like enough notice that no body is scram bling to find a new roommate, and notice to change things up with the landlord. There are legal obligations when all parties are listed on the lease. What about your hydro, Internet and cable? Will one person be responsible for paying all the bills? How will they be split up? If you’re a

couple and there is disparity in your incomes, clarify the financial expec tations before signing your lease. Are you at the point where your fi nances are blended or do you want clear, separate responsibilities and obligations

CLEANING

This is an area that often causes problems when living with someone. One person can be compulsively neat and the other careless and sloppy. Discussing the issue beforehand (es pecially if you’re looking for a room mate) can help to ensure greater success down the road. Ask your potential roommate how clean they like/need the apartment to be. Clar ify who will clean the bathroom(s) and how frequently; take out the gar bage and recycling; vacuum the liv ing room, and when. Create a chart and keep track. Or, discuss sharing the cost of a cleaning service to keep everyone happy.

PERSONAL SPACE AND PERSONALITY

Everyone needs some private space and time. When looking for a roommate, let them know if you are the type of person who has the TV on all the time, if you always have music on, or if you like to spend your evenings curled up with a good book and a glass of wine in the living room. Are you a noisy night owl? What about guests? Be sure to discuss your lifestyle preferences with your room mate so there won’t be any surprises.

For example, do you like to have a lot of friends over regularly, or are you the type of person who goes out after work and tends to come home late

in the evenings? Would you be put out if your roommate had their boy friend or girlfriend over all the time, or a friend occupying the guest room regularly? Having constant guests can wear on the roommate relation ship because a guest will enjoy the living area and use the home without having any financial responsibility. Ground rules are a good idea.

FOOD AND INCIDENTALS

This is more of a challenge be tween roommates rather than those who have blended finances. Will you share the cost of food – and the work involved in preparing and cleaning up meals? It can be highly impracti cal to have two containers of every thing. If you are a vegetarian or have food allergies, it would be pragmatic to cohabit with someone who is sen sitive to your situation.

Do you share leftovers? Do you have a strict ‘replace what you take’ policy? Are you going to have a ‘com munal kitty’ where you each put a specified amount each week to cover the cost of frequently replaced items you share, like toilet paper, dish soap and light bulbs? Decide before issues arise.

The secret to successful cohabita tion is understanding the other per son’s goals and expectations, and be ing like-minded on some of the issues that can become major problems. Good relationships are the result of commitment, consideration, com munication and compromise. The more you know about yourself, your partner and the realities you’ll face together, the greater your chances of success. ■

avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when planning your move

There’s

an old saying about being penny wise and pound foolish, which I see play out often in the mov ing industry.

When anticipating moving your home or business, you have the op tion to hire a moving company or do it yourself. Although some assume DIY is an economical way to go, hiring a professional mover can, in fact, save you time, stress and even money.

Think about it. By doing it yourself, you have to rent a truck, determine moving supplies and equipment as well as other incidentals. You need to transfer your possessions from Point A to B safely and efficiently, and find moving helpers.

sume long-time, recognized, nation al-brand movers are expensive. On the contrary. Relocation specialists offer skilled, trained, bonded, uni formed and experienced movers who have the same goal in mind as you do—to move your items as quickly and as safely as possible.

ers likely lack the know-how to do this effectively. Even if you do decide to pack your own belongings, consider purchasing professional packing ma terials from a reputable mover.

Few are qualified or willing to get behind the wheel of a moving truck, so you will likely end up with a cargo van, which requires several trips. You ask a few friends or family members, or both, to help. You promise to re ward them with cold beverages and pizza but, at the last minute, some of them do not show up. Those who do are probably not trained in the art of moving, including how to lift boxes without hurting their backs. There is much more chance of injury when people move themselves.

The most common reason why people opt for DIY is because they as

Many movers, such as Two Men and a Truck – Canada, offer a free, no-obligation, in-home estimate so you know exactly where you stand should you choose to hire them. Many people don’t realize what it takes to move; you may be surprised at the cost and what it covers. By hir ing professional movers and getting them to pack as well, their supplies ensure safe traveling for all cat egories of possessions—from heavy books to fragile lamps. Our boxes, for example, come in standard sizes so they can be stacked in the moving van to maximize space.

We have dollies, stretch wrap, blan kets and ties for securing items to the van walls. The goal is to get every thing in the truck secured, so it does not shift during travel. Do-it-yourself

Whether you are moving your residence belongings or transfer ring office furniture, equipment and files, moving specialists know what to plan for and how to arrange the logistics. You may have a narrow window of opportunity, because of booking elevators in a condominium, for example. We make it our business to take on the headaches of the move for you. Moving is one of the most exciting—and stressful—life steps you can take. Enlisting a professional mover is a fabulous stress reducer.

If you are planning a move, think through the steps needed and keep an open mind to your options. Sure, you can do it yourself, but do you re ally want to? DIY will likely cost you more time, money and aggravation. When you look at the bigger picture, hiring professional movers may be one of the best relocation decisions you could ever make! ■
