top tips to save on groceries

Between inflation and high interest rates, many of us are struggling to pay our bills. While we can save money by cutting back on things like restaurant meals and the number of different streaming services we subscribe to, some things are essential, including groceries. Here are four ways you can get more for less when shopping at the grocery store.

watch out for sale items

Get familiar with promo programs at your local grocery store. Many retailers have regular sales that can really help when it comes to saving on groceries. Loblaws and Zehrs, for example, have regular “price drops” every four weeks on over 400 products, where they lower prices on certain items so you can get more value from everyday grocery shopping. Stock up on these and other on-sale items that you regularly use. Grocery stores also lower the price of items that are close to their best-before date. The food is still good; it just needs to be consumed soon – or frozen – for peak freshness.

buy in bulk

In general, you’ll save money by buying products in larger packs. If you have the storage space, stock up on toiletries and other household items. If your storage space is limited, consider sharing the cost and contents from larger packages with friends or family members.

You can also buy produce or protein in bulk packs and freeze the portion you won’t be able to use immediately. To ensure you’re really getting a deal when buying in bulk, compare the per-unit price on different-sized packages.

comparison shop

Scan store’s printed or online coupons and flyers to find the best deals on the items you need before you go shopping. Just remember to factor in the value of your time and any travel costs for fuel or transit before you head to too many stores to find the best deals. But also

note that many grocery stores will price-match their competitor’s current promotions, so you can often get everything you’re after in one place.

use loyalty plans

If you shop at a grocery chain with a loyalty program, such as PC Optimum, you can use the points you’ve earned to get instant savings off your bill. Some of these programs allow you to earn points at affiliated retailers or by using a branded bank or credit card.

how to update small bathroom details for big impact

Spending more time at home over the past few years has encouraged many people to reimagine how they organize their space, no matter the size.

When it comes to your bathroom, there are easy adjustments to make a big difference in how the small room is used. Here are some tips:

hide the mystery

A popular trend in home design and renovations is hidden conveniences. This means tucking away as much as possible while maintaining function and usability of the space. Consider reorganizing your cabinets and vanity with proper storage units that keep clutter organized and out of sight.

maintain boundaries

Always remember that electricity and water don’t mix, especially in smaller spaces like a bathroom. If

you’re remodelling, keep your outlets at least 500 millimetres away from the sink and bathtub to keep safe, and ensure they have ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection if within 1.5m of a stink, tub or shower.

reflect on it

For a space of any size, we know that adding mirrors and lighter colours can make a room feel bigger than it actually is. Upgrading with a larger mirror, or perhaps adding in another small one for décor can do wonders to make a tight squeeze feel bright and airy.

warm it up

There are many heated additions you can apply to a bathroom beyond turning up the temperature in your bubble bath. In-floor heating or heated towel racks both offer a powerful upgrade.

If you’re redoing electrical in your bathroom, whether it’s new

outlets or a toilet seat warmer, consider working with a Licensed Electrical Contracting business to ensure everything is done safely and that you have a certificate from Electrical Safety Authority, known as ESA, at the completion of the work. ■

how to reduce bank fees

Banks charge fees for their products and services, like savings accounts.

There are ways to reduce those fees so you don’t pay more than you need to.

First, consider how you use your accounts. You don’t want to pay monthly fees for account features you will never use. On the other hand, you need to be careful with fee-per-transaction accounts because fees can add up quickly.

For many accounts, banks charge a set monthly fee. This allows you to make a certain number of transactions each month. The number and type of transactions included in your monthly fees depend on your account. You must pay for each transaction over the pre-set number your monthly banking package allows.

Some accounts will waive the monthly fee if you keep a minimum

balance throughout the month. For example, say you pay $12 per month in fees. Your financial institution may waive this cost because you maintained a minimum balance of $2,000, saving you $144 per year.

You may also qualify for a multiproduct discount if you have more than one banking product with your financial institution. For example, you may get a discount if you have a mortgage and a credit card. Check with your bank to find out if you qualify for one of these service packages or discounts.

With a “per-transaction” account, you pay for every transaction you make, and fees can add up fast if you’re not careful. Consider the number of transactions you make per month before deciding if a pertransaction account is right for you.

Certain financial institutions have signed an agreement with the

federal government to offer lowcost accounts with basic features. Low-cost accounts charge a maximum of $4 per month in banking fees. You may be eligible for a free low-cost account if you meet certain conditions.

Before you sign up for an account, make sure you understand all the terms and conditions, including fees. Ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Keep a copy of your account agreement for your records.

Banks must send you electronic alerts any time your account balance falls below $100 or another limit you set. This will help you avoid overdraft fees.

4 simple and affordable ways to

stay healthy this fall

No one wants the discomfort – let alone the hassle – that comes with catching a cold or other illness. But you don’t have to shell out for expensive remedies or shots of ginger or kale smoothies every day to support your immune system or stay healthy. Here are a few affordable steps you can take to safeguard your health.

have a laugh

Stress is a major contributor to why and when we get sick. It taxes the immune system and makes it harder to fight off infections. Growing research points to laughter as a powerful medicine that helps reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve your mood. When we laugh, our body brings in extra oxygen, which lowers our heart rate and

stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system – the opposite of fightor-flight mode. Basically, it’s like taking deep breaths to calm yourself down, but more enjoyable.

drink up

Staying hydrated is an important tool to keep your body working at its best, especially if you think you might be coming down

get some shut-eye

with something. Water is recommended as best. But as the days cool off a soothing cup of mint, lemon, ginger or fennel tea, may give you a low-cost boost of vitamin C and antioxidants in addition to warmth and a calming, comforting flavour. Stashing a box of teabags at the office or in your kitchen cupboards means they’ll be within easy reach when you need them.

Sleep is like the ultimate no-cost wellness hack, allowing your body to reset and restore itself overnight. Experts generally recommend adults get six to nine hours of sleep a night, but exactly how much each person needs is different. Research also suggests that waking and going to sleep at roughly the same time every day will improve your quality of sleep.

Alternatively, a slightly cool room is thought to provide a less disturbed, more restful sleep – so it’s smart to turn down the thermostat a little at night.

get your shots

Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent the flu and the seri-

ous complications you can get from it. And, of course, costs associated with receiving the flu shot are covered by provincial health insurance plans in Canada. This year, you can get the flu shot at the same time as your dose of the latest approved COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, that’s what’s recommended by Health Canada. While it’s never too late to get them, the sooner the better so that your body can build up immunity before the season peaks.

You can get your flu vaccine and COVID-19 shot at most local pharmacies, including Rexall. You can walk in or book an appointment online at rexall.ca/flu. ■

avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when planning your move

There’s an old saying about being penny wise and pound foolish, which I see play out often in the moving industry.

When anticipating moving your home or business, you have the option to hire a moving company or do it yourself. Although some assume DIY is an economical way to go, hiring a professional mover can, in fact, save you time, stress and even money.

Think about it. By doing it yourself, you have to rent a truck, determine moving supplies and equipment as well as other incidentals. You need to transfer your possessions from Point A to B safely and

DIY will likely cost you more time, money and aggravation.

efficiently, and find moving helpers.

Few are qualified or willing to get behind the wheel of a moving truck, so you will likely end up with a cargo van, which requires several trips. You ask a few friends or family members, or both, to help. You promise to reward them with cold beverages and pizza but, at the last minute, some of them do not show up. Those who do are probably not trained in the art of moving, including how to lift boxes without hurting their backs. There is much more chance of injury when people move themselves.

The most common reason why people opt for DIY is because they assume long-time, recognized, national-brand movers are expensive. On the contrary. Relocation specialists offer skilled, trained, bonded, uniformed and experienced movers who have the same goal in mind as you do—to move your items as quickly and as safely as possible.

Many movers, such as Two Men and a Truck – Canada, offer a free, no-obligation, in-home estimate so you know exactly where you stand should you choose to hire them. Many people don’t realize what it takes to move; you may be surprised at the cost and what it covers. By hiring professional movers and getting them to pack as well, their supplies ensure safe traveling for all categories of possessions—from heavy books to fragile lamps. Our boxes, for example, come in standard sizes so they can be stacked in the moving van to maximize space.

We have dollies, stretch wrap, blankets and ties for securing items to the van walls. The goal is to get everything in the truck secured, so it does not shift during travel. Do-

it-yourselfers likely lack the knowhow to do this effectively. Even if you do decide to pack your own belongings, consider purchasing professional packing materials from a reputable mover.

Whether you are moving your residence belongings or transferring office furniture, equipment and files, moving specialists know what to plan for and how to arrange the logistics. You may have a narrow window of opportunity, because of booking elevators in a condominium, for example. We make it our business to take on the headaches of the move for you. Moving is one of the most exciting—and stressful— life steps you can take. Enlisting a professional mover is a fabulous stress reducer.

If you are planning a move, think through the steps needed and keep an open mind to your options. Sure, you can do it yourself, but do you really want to? DIY will likely cost you more time, money and aggravation. When you look at the bigger picture, hiring professional movers may be one of the best relocation decisions you could ever make! ■

Take advantage of the change of seasons and find new ways to step up for sustainability this fall. From delicious recipes to décor inspiration, here are three tips:

1. leave the leaves

Falling leaves signal the arrival of autumn. Instead of raking and throwing them away in plastic garbage bags, consider leaving them on your lawn. Leaves play an important role in the health and natural cycles of plants and soil – leaving them can improve your garden and lawn.

If you’d prefer to remove the leaves, consider composting them instead of throwing them away. If your municipality doesn’t pick up yard waste, it’s easy to start composting at home.

2. decorate using nature

When it comes to fall holidays, it’s time to pull out the decorations

you stored away last year. While you shouldn’t throw out the ones you already own, try to avoid purchasing new plastic decorations and use natural options if you need more. Pinecones, leaves and flowers can all be used to create a wreath or other decorative pieces. There is endless colourful and creative inspiration to be found in nature.

3. embrace seasonal recipes

Warm up with a delicious fall meal like chicken stew in a slow cooker. As slow cookers use less energy over a long period of time, they give off fewer emissions than a conventional oven.

As a bonus – you might have leftovers, so you can spend less on food for the rest of the week. Choose chicken and other proteins from companies that are prioritizing ecofriendly initiatives, such as Maple Leaf Foods, which is a carbon-neutral food company. ■
