4 simple and affordable ways to

stay healthy this fall N

o one wants the discomfort – let alone the hassle – that comes with catching a cold or other illness. But you don’t have to shell out for expensive remedies or shots of ginger or kale smoothies every day to support your immune system or stay healthy. Here are a few affordable steps you can take to safeguard your health. 4Rent.ca November 10–24, 2023

have a laugh

Stress is a major contributor to why and when we get sick. It taxes the immune system and makes it harder to fight off infections. Growing research points to laughter as a powerful medicine that helps reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve your mood. When we laugh, our body brings in extra oxygen, which lowers our heart rate and stimulates

the parasympathetic nervous system – the opposite of fight-or-flight mode. Basically, it’s like taking deep breaths to calm yourself down, but more enjoyable.

drink up

Staying hydrated is an important tool to keep your body working at its best, especially if you think you might be coming down with some-

thing. Water is recommended as best. But as the days cool off a soothing cup of mint, lemon, ginger or fennel tea, may give you a low-cost boost of vitamin C and antioxidants in addition to warmth and a calming, comforting flavour. Stashing a box of teabags at the office or in your kitchen cupboards means they’ll be within easy reach when you need them.

Sleep is like the ultimate no-cost wellness hack, allowing your body to reset and restore itself overnight. Experts generally recommend adults get six to nine hours of sleep a night, but exactly how much each person needs is different. Research also suggests that waking and going to sleep at roughly the same time every day will improve your quality of sleep. Alternatively, a slightly cool room is thought to provide a less disturbed, more restful sleep – so it’s smart to turn down the thermostat a little at night.

get your shots

Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent the flu and the seri-

ous complications you can get from it. And, of course, costs associated with receiving the flu shot are covered by provincial health insurance plans in Canada. This year, you can get the flu shot at the same time as your dose of the latest approved COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, that’s what’s recommended by Health Canada. While it’s never too late to get them, the sooner the better so that your body can build up immunity before the season peaks. You can get your flu vaccine and COVID-19 shot at most local pharmacies, including Rexall. You can walk in or book an appointment online at rexall.ca/flu. ■ — News Canada November 10–24, 2023

FINANCE

10

how to navigate your

finances with confidence

T

he hot housing market, rising inflation, the ongoing pandemic, and an increasingly complex and digital financial marketplace can sometimes make money decisions feel overwhelming. You may be surprised to learn that just feeling more confident can actually help you make better choices. Here are some simple, practical things you can do to boost your financial confidence when it counts.

shop around

Compare products and services from different providers to better understand your options. Whether you’re considering credit card options or renewing your mortgage,

you don’t have to stick with the same bank where you have your chequing account if you can get a better interest rate or product for your needs elsewhere. Make an informed decision about your options by using unbiased financial tools such as the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC)’s online credit card comparison tool and mortgage calculator.

just-in-time knowledge

Major life events – living as a couple, buying or selling a home, having children, getting divorced – can involve the most important and complicated financial decisions. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never budgeted for a wedding or saved for a child’s post-

secondary education before. The best time to brush up on your knowledge is while you’re planning for these milestones.

have a plan

Whether you’re stressed about debt, saving for retirement or want to build your financial resilience in case of an emergency, a plan will give you peace of mind. You don’t need to be an accountant or financial planner to set goals and track your income and expenses. Try FCAC’s budget planner, financial goal calculator or credit card payment calculator, which are all free and easy to use. 4 ways to reduce

F

gift-giving stress this holiday season

ily member or office Secret Santa can prove challenging. Sure, there’s the worry of the gift selection itself when attempting to buy for the person who has everything, or for someone you barely know. Add in the stresses of gift wrapping, timely delivery if you’re ordering online, and trying to score a just-right item that suits your budget, and you’ve got a perfect holiday-anxiety storm. Fortunately, reducing holiday stress is very possible. Here are four ways that can help:

whittle down your list

Even if it feels like your people-to-shop-for list is set in stone, know this: it’s okay to reassess each year. Buying for kids instead of adults in a family-and-friends dynamic is a great way to minimize spending. Or, incorporating an ornament exchange with hardto-buy-for types will keep the

spirit of giving alive without sacrificing your sanity in the process.

be a purposeful shopper

A great way to avoid buying items your recipients don’t want or need or spending over your limit? Make a list. Whether you prefer to shop in-store or online, being prepared before you buy will help minimize unnecessary purchases. And making a list early on will also help you determine if you’re planning to buy too many gifts, period.

get emotional

A study published by the Journal of Consumer Psychology found that many participants chose to give a personal but predictable present, assuming the recipient would prefer it. Interestingly, the study found gift recipients valued emotional presents that tugged at their heartstrings instead. So,

consider choosing a meaningful gift that helps others through tough times. Take the stress out of personalizing it completely with something like the World Vision catalogue. Since it helps children in the world’s most dangerous places, it can be one way to help everyone feel good about giving.

shop early and shop smart

Sometimes it’s not possible to finish your holiday shopping well in advance. So, whenever possible, set aside a few hours on a weekend or after work to chip away at your list online or in person and avoid the chaotic last-minute rush. And for those who prefer to shop online but are concerned about delivery dates, shopping early (and with reputable retailers) is even more important. Find more information about the gift catalogue at worldvision.ca/gift. ■ — News Canada

MOVERS

H

18

the right movers

BY CHUCK RESNICK

iring the right moving company can save you lots of work, stress and headaches in the long run. Industry professionals are accustomed to handling all kinds of moves, from apartments to homes and offices to larger offices. We understand how to pack, mark and transport items of all shapes, sizes and levels of fragility. We appreciate the importance of what we do, because people’s “stuff” is so much more to them than a collection of items. It represents their lifestyle, memories, emotional connections and fun. Although many consumers move themselves and do a good job of it, enlisting professional movers is the choice of many others. However, you do want to be careful that the company you hire is above board and upholds strict standards. How can you tell? Do your research by asking questions. Is the company a member of the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM)? This organization exists to help people find reputable movers they can trust. To explore a company’s reputation, you can also contact the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and your provincial government’s consumer protection agency. Visit Mover.net to learn more about what CAM has to say – the first three things listed are: ask three movers for estimates in writing; get the terms and conditions of your move in writing; and ensure you know how your goods will be protected for loss or damage. If a company representative does not know how to answer your questions or glosses over them, a red flag should go up.

Communication is the number-one factor in a successful move. At Two Men and A Truck® – Canada, we have a Consumer Bill of Rights, the only one in the Canadian moving industry. We also have a list of questions to consider when consumers are thinking about hiring a mover. Of particular importance are the financial considerations. For example, does the company have a minimum charge, and how are you charged after that minimum is met? Will you be charged for fuel or travel time to and from their office to your home or business? Will there be a fuel surcharge or a stairs or long-distance walk charge if they have to park the truck some distance from your door? Is there a deposit required, and what kinds of payment options are available? Do they offer free quotes? How do they arrive at a valuation that is covered by insurance? Does the

mover have advice for how you can reduce your costs? It is also important to ask if they employ full-time workers or use temps and day labour, and whether their employees are covered by Worker’s Compensation. Are their movers trained in how to pack and move carefully and efficiently? Ask how to contact the firm’s office during moving day, in case there are issues. If all the representative offers is a cell phone number, be suspicious. In fact, it’s a good idea to visit the movers’ office to make sure it exists. Remember, anyone can make anything seem real on a website. It’s best for everyone involved to have a moving contract that outlines what is expected. Read it and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Hiring a company you can trust makes for a more comfortable, less stressful and successful move. ■

Chuck Resnick is vice-president, marketing and operations at Two Men and A Truck – Canada®.

how to find

family history info for free F

amily history is a world many of us would love to explore. However, a mistaken belief that it’s an expensive hobby requiring pricy subscriptions or trips to a special library are holding back many would-be genealogists. Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to pay for the information you need. The Canadian census is one of the best tools available for research into family history. And you can find it all for free. Nearly all the available Canadian censuses are freely accessible through Library and Archives Canada, and the censuses from 1825 to 1926 can be individually searched using an online database. You can learn many things from the census. But remember that every census is different because the questions change from census to census, as do the possible responses people could give. These changes reflect how Canadian society has transformed from one generation to the next.

In general, since 1871 you should be able to track your ancestors by the following information: • age • sex • marital status • country or province of birth • religious denomination (after 1951, questions about religion have only been asked every ten years) • ethnic origin • occupation • education The earliest censuses might be missing certain information since weather or environmental disasters could make it impossible for all the information to be collected back then, or original records may have been lost to fires or water damage. Family history can teach us so much about how our lives came to be. While it’s not always easy to find the information you want, finding free resources like the census can sure make it easier. The census is a great place to start. The 2021 Census starts on May 3. Find more information or complete your census at census.gc.ca. ■ — News Canada

tips to help you

tackle your

debt

T

he pandemic has taught us that life can be unpredictable. Economic uncertainty about the future means it’s more important than ever to have the right tools to respond and adapt to changes in your financial situation, while still taking steps to manage your finances and debt. Having a budget is key to feeling in control of your money. A budget helps you know how much money is coming in, going out and being saved. Budgeting helps balance your income and expenses, so you get a clear idea of what you can afford. Before you start, it’s important that you take some time to identify your needs and wants. These can differ greatly from one person to another. Next, create your budget. Use the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s free online budget planner to help you figure out your priorities and where to cut expenses. It’s also great for comparing your budget against Canadians in similar life situations. To make it easier to pay back your debt, it’s always a good idea to have a realistic plan. Here are steps to get you started:

identify what you owe

Make a list and for each debt, list the total amount you owe, your minimum monthly payment and the interest rate.

decide on a strategy

Create your plan – choose a timeframe that’s reasonable and affordable. Decide which debts to pay off first, depending on the type and considering things like interest rates. Work directly with your bank and creditors to discuss your financial situation.

consolidate your debts

You may consider applying for a loan or line of credit to pay off multiple debts with high interest rates. Consolidating your debts means you’ll only have to make one monthly payment rather than paying each one individually, and the interest rate could potentially be lower. Contact a financial institution to discuss whether this is an option. Managing money and debt in uncertain times isn’t always easy, but there are resources to help you.
