Just because you aren’t going into the office doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to feel your best and look sharp.
around the house, such as your video call headphones or your loose papers and sticky notes. Then recycle anything you don’t need and store the rest in a dedicated location. You’ll feel fresher and ready to take on what’s next.
upgrade your workwear
A
fter a year of working from home for many of us, it’s only natural to be hitting a rut. No matter how great your at-home work setup is, you might need a refresh. Here are few tips to make working from home so much better:
declutter your workspace
A lot of work-related clutter can build up over time. Take a few minutes to collect any office items lying
Just because you aren’t going into the office doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to feel your best and look sharp. If you’re keen on business wear, try easing into a new pair of pants or a simple summer dress to find a more relaxed summertime vibe. If you’ve defaulted to pyjamas and sweats every day, consider finding the happy medium with a new pair of sleek joggers, just for a change.
get outdoors
Take advantage of the season and head outside while you can. A quick walk in a local park is a great way to take a break or end your workday. If you have a backyard or balcony, set up a simple internet extender to move the office outside on warm days. The fresh air will lift up your spirits and do wonders for your productivity.
boost online security for your personal devices
According to a recent survey, only 18 per cent of Canadians are using online identity theft protection tools, and most of us just don’t know where to start. With so much online activity taking place, including a high volume of info sharing, we’ve become increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks and identity theft, so it’s worthwhile to update your security measures for your personal devices as best as you can. While no one can prevent all identity theft or cybercrime, using an all-in-one solution like Telus Online Security Powered by NortonLifeLock can help protect your personal devices, online privacy and information. Made for consumers, the comprehensive coverage is available across Canada (excluding Quebec residents) and includes multiple layers of protection that can help protect your identity and provide restoration if your personal information is ever stolen. Overall, changes like these can help bring peace of mind to your work-from-home life going forward. Find more information at telus.com/ onlinesecurity. ■ — News Canada November 11–25, 2022

credit ratings and why they matter
I
n the Canadian financial system, credit history is king. Without, it’s hard to secure most cell phone plans or rental agreements, which is why learning about credit and how to build a credit history is essential for all Canadians – especially newcomers. Like many seeking their first credit card in Canada, newcomers might expect to receive a lower credit limit. This can be frustrating when it’s clear that access to a higher limit can help improve your credit score and is more efficient for larger purchases. “Newcomers receive less support and education around credit than they would for other facets like finding a job or housing,” says Amit Brahme, senior director of the Newcomer and Cultural Client Segment
at RBC. “Something many of us who are used to the system overlook is just how critical credit education is to settling down in Canada.” Since regularly using a credit card helps to build credit history – and credit history paves the way for future purchases, such as rent, purchasing a car and eventually owning a home – it’s worthwhile to seek a banking partner that provides access to higher credit limits with no credit history required.
here are the top three important things for anyone to learn about credit in Canada:
1. What it is: A credit score is similar to a report card for your finances that represents your credit risk the likelihood that you will pay
your bills on time, pay back loans, etc. The higher the score, the more likely a bank or other lender is to approve a loan request. Loans can go towards things such as opening a business, continuing your education or securing a mortgage. 2. How it’s calculated: Multiple factors are taken into consideration, such as your payment history, the length of your credit history and your used credit vs. your available credit. 3. How to use it: Ensure all bills are paid on time and in full and, if possible, try not to max out your credit limit each month. To improve your credit score, it’s best to use up to 30 per cent of your overall available credit. For more information, visit rbc. com/newcomers. ■ — News Canada

It’s such an everyday object that we always don’t think about it much, but a kitchen’s faucet is one of the first places the eye lands on as someone enters the room. Make a good first impression by simply swapping it out for a fresh one. A flowing, statuesque design will catch the eye while conveying high value. Consider modern features like Touch2O, that lets the faucet turn on with a simple tap anywhere on it. create more closet space without major renovations C
loset space is at a premium in many homes and apartments. Many older homes were not built to accommodate large wardrobes, while rental properties are often designed to maximize living space at the expense of storage. Closets vary depending on the size of the home, but many tend to be a minimum of 24 inches deep so they can store garments without the clothes brushing against the walls. Bedroom and hallway closets can be four feet in length or more. Walk-in closets are the largest options, but such spaces tend to only be available in modern homes or custom-built properties. It is not always practical or possible to undergo renovations to create more closet space. Apart from moving to a new residence, homeowners or renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas.
clear out clutter
The first step to more closet space is to eliminate unused items. Clothing that no longer fits or items that can be stored elsewhere should be removed from the closet. Donate as much as possible. Some organizations will even pick up donations at your convenience.
upgrade hangers and rods
Replace existing hangers with slimmer, more uniform alternatives that more easily fit into your closet. In addition, remove empty hangers, which are likely just taking up space.
Apart from moving to a new residence, homeowners or renters must evaluate the space they have and make some more efficient choices in how they utilize available areas Consider dual closet rods if space will allow them. Hang the second rod below an area reserved for shorter clothing to achieve a two-tiered design. Grouping short items together also can free up valuable floor space.
Stack taller
Many closets are as tall as the ceilings of the rooms where they’re located. However, the upper area may go unused because if it is not easy to reach. Install shelving above the clos-
et rod with small swingout style cabinet doors to offer access. In such areas, store seasonal items that you won’t need to reach for each day. Keep a step stool close by for easy accessibility. In small rooms, homeowners may want to find another way to utilize vertical space. A loft bed, which raises the bed up to a level where it might be on the top bunk of a bunk bed, will free up plenty of storage space beneath the bed. This can be turned into a floor closet.
create storage for small items
Bookends, bins, boxes and drawers can be used to contain items that don’t easily conform to closets. These may be purses, scarves, ties, and more. Don’t overlook the possibilities of hanging items on the wall inside the closet or on the back of closet doors. When finishing closet makeovers, be sure to install lighting inside the closet so items are more visible. ■ — Metro Creative

snowstorm got you stuck indoors?
how to keep the A
kids busy
s the pandemic stretches on and winter sets in, we’re all going a little stir crazy. If you’re a parent feeling stuck on creative ideas for fun and educational activities to do with your kids, we’ve got you covered. Here are some suggestions from The Genius of Play, a nonprofit initiative whose mission is to raise awareness about the critical role of play in healthy child development:
play with texture
Kids love playing with sensory textures such as paints, slime, sand and foam, and this helps improve fine motor skills. Fortunately, you can now find less messy and sticky versions of these items for a hasslefree cleanup.
revisit favourite games
Consider classic board games like checkers and dominoes, or playing a game of crazy eights with a deck of cards. These games teach the importance of sharing and good sportsmanship while helping kids learn to strategize and plan ahead.
experiment with costumes
Encourage kids to develop their emotional, creative and communication skills by developing their own skit or play. Maintain a well-stocked costume trunk that they can
use for dress-up and have toys on hand to use as props.
build new things
Whether your child prefers following step-by-step instructions or using their imagination, designing, creating and playing with construction toys can build problem-solving, spatial and fine motor skills.
create an obstacle course
Building a safe obstacle course is a fun way to keep little ones active indoors while building core muscles and developing balance. Pick three to five exercises to get their energy out.
check out STEAM toys
Play with science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) toys and games. For example, use a science kit to erupt a volcano or code a robot. These important educational experiences can be fun supplements to classroom learning.
transform tidying up
It may not sound like play at first glance, but cleanup can be fun with the right attitude. Put on music and have kids dance as they put toys away, make the bed and help with chores. Or, make a game of it, racing each other to complete tasks. Find play ideas, expert advice and other play resources at thegeniusofplay.org. ■ — News Canada November 11–25, 2022
