up front
It’s almost impossible to believe that another year has come and gone in the blink of an eye. The holidays are a meaningful time to express our gratitude and thank those around us while keeping in mind those who make the holiday season meaningful.
With that said, some may have experienced change over the years like I have.
Before the pandemic, my four children (who are all very close in age) were turning pages and entering new chapters in their lives. The transition to becoming an empty nester was not an easy one for me as a mother because change is never easy.
One thing that was always a guarantee was that they’d be home for Christmas.
Call me naïve but when COVID-19 hit, I did not think it was possible that holiday traditions would also change. I’d never even considered that each chair around the table wouldn’t be filled on any given holiday. During an ordinary year for Christmas Eve, we would have a whole house of guests or dinner with my mother-in-law at her favourite restaurant. As for our annual pre-Christmas party, we would have around 56 people attending. And that was only one side of the family.
But the pandemic – as it did for many – brought on loss and change.
Holidays as I’d always known them to be, stopped.
A table a little less full, fewer to no gatherings, and an unpleasant silence.
The loss of family traditions was not something I was prepared for, and I was disheartened thinking about it. Between being an empty nester and an unprecedented global time, the pace of change in my life was rapid, and I found it difficult to let go of family traditions that, for 20+ years, were always a given.
One thing I knew for certain was that my Christmas mimosa wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Over the years and as our new normal has become, well, normal, I’ve realized, sometimes change can’t be stopped so why not make the best of it and be grateful for those around us anyway and adapt.
There is nothing wrong with creating new holiday traditions, and there is nothing wrong with changing old ones to adjust to our new lifestyles.
Isn’t that what we all did when we first became parents and raised our own families?
If you get together around the holidays, it doesn’t really matter what day it is, as long as you are with people you love.
That’s a wrap for 2022! This season, “Just remember, the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart.” – The Polar Express

Ingredients:
Cake: 4 eggs, separated ¾ cup (175 mL) granulated sugar ¼ cup (60 mL) plain yogurt ¼ cup (60 mL) vegetable oil 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted 1 tsp (5 mL) baking powder ½ tsp (2 mL) salt
Filling: ¾ cup (175 mL) mascarpone cheese ¾ cup (175 mL) 35% whipping cream ¼ cup (60 mL) orange marmalade 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract
Chocolate Frosting: ½ cup (125 mL) salted butter 2 cups (500 mL) icing sugar ½ cup (125 mL) unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
½ tsp (2 mL) ground cinnamon garnish
Directions:
Place a clean sheet of parchment over top of cake. Starting at the short edge, roll up cake tightly, using both top and bottom pieces of parchment. Let cake roll sit on its seam for 5 minutes. Carefully and slowly unroll the cake and remove the top piece of parchment.
Filling: Place mascarpone, whipping cream, marmalade and vanilla in a large bowl. Using a hand mixer, whip on high for 1 minute or until leaving a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border along 3 outer peeling away the bottom piece of parchment. Let roll rest on the seam. Transfer roll to a serving platter when ready to frost.
Chocolate Frosting: In another large bowl, using hand mixer on low speed, beat butter for 1 minute. Add icing sugar, cocoa powder and cinnamon; mix on low to incorporate. Increase speed to medium while slowly adding in milk. Beat on high for 2 minutes. Frost cake roll and trim both ends.

WHAT MAKES THE HOLIDAYS SPECIAL?
WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
What makes the holidays special? For some, it’s about baking, hanging fairy lights, or finding that perfect gift. For others, it’s watching A Charlie Browns Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life or laughing out loud at the antics of Macaulay Culkin’s character in Home Alone for the hundredth time. But when it comes to the magic of the holidays, being with family and friends and celebrating time honoured traditions is what these kids look forward to the most.
“It’s all about Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival. It falls on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023 – marking the Year of the Rabbit. Kids receive lai see (red envelopes) with money in them. The best part is visiting relatives and getting these red envelopes. My mother told me lai see symbolizes good luck and prosperity. The more red envelopes you receive, the more good fortune you will have for the year. It’s a tradition we still observe – but we also celebrate the traditional Christmas with Santa Claus. The best part is just being together.”
Lily, age 11
“Our dad helped us with this. Kwanzaa (Dec. 26–Jan. 1) comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning “first fruits of the harvest.” It was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. It’s based on seven principles. Unity, selfdetermination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Celebrating Kwanzaa is a way African Canadians build their cultural traditions. It’s not a religious holiday and we still celebrate Christmas. We light one of the seven candles, three red, one black and three green candles of the Kinara for each of the seven principals. On the night before the last day, we have a huge party. It’s called a Karamu, and everyone’s invited –family and friends.”
Aiysha, age 11. Amri, age 13
“Skating, tobogganing, playing hockey and having snowball fights with my brother and sister. As a family we also volunteer at the food bank.”
Daniel, age 8
“Some of our family live far away. It’s the one time of year we see everyone together. It’s also about giving, not getting things, and being thankful because many people in the world don’t have as much.”
Nate, age 9
“Spending time with family is very important, and giving to others. I’m also looking forward to wearing fun Christmas pyjamas, opening each day on my advent calendar and snow.”
Kylie, age 11
“Being together and eating jelly donuts. We celebrate Hannukah (Dec. 18–26th), and this year I get to fill them with whatever flavour I want. My bubbe (grandmother) told me that the sugary donuts are a reminder that life can be sweet. I’ve decided to fill the donuts with strawberry jam.”
Marla, age 10

TIPS TO HELP KIDS LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Bilingualism benefits children in myriad ways. For example, a 2014 study published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology found that bilingual children have a higher vocabulary range than monolingual kids. In addition, a 2010 review published in the Review of Educational Research found that bilingual students typically have stronger working memories and attention spans than their monolingual counterparts.
The benefits of bilingualism are undeniable but learning a foreign language can be challenging. However, that challenge could be less significant for youngsters. Though there are different theories regarding why children seem to learn languages more readily than adults, Dr. Eleonore Smalle of Tilburg University in the Netherlands indicates that adults tend
to translate from their first language when trying to learn a new language. In an interview with the United Nations in Western Europe, Dr. Smalle said that adults’ attempts to adopt language rules they already know results in a “less stable consolidation of the new language into memory.”
Children, on the other hand, unconsciously implement the new language rules and even use newly acquired words in everyday life. That, Dr. Smalle says, benefits long-term memory consolidation.
It’s important to note that researchers, including Dr. Smalle, feel that children may find it easier to learn a foreign language up to adolescence, at which time their conscious memory begins to develop more strongly. So, parents who want to help their children learn a foreign language have a relatively
long window of time to get that ball rolling before kids could find it more challenging. Parents also can try some additional strategies to help kids learn a foreign language.
Bring lessons home from the classroom
Children learning a foreign language in school or via a private tutor can be encouraged to bring those lessons home and continue to develop those skills in a fun way. Play games in a foreign language at home on family game night. Young children just beginning foreign language lessons can be encouraged to count to 10 when playing hide-and-seek at home.
Shop for groceries in a foreign language
When grocery shopping with children in tow, parents can point to foods around the store and ask kids to say
each item in the foreign language they’re learning. Make a list before going to the store and reward kids who name all of the items on the list with a special treat at checkout.
Read books in the language the child is learning
This could be tricky if parents are not bilingual. However, in that scenario, reading books to children in a foreign language provides a great way to reverse roles and let children teach their parents everything they’ve learned from their teachers or tutors. Keep stories simple and even seek recommendations from teachers or tutors.
The benefits of bilingualism are significant. Parents can try various strategies to ensure foreign language lessons learned in the classroom are reinforced at home. – Metro Creative
