EDITORS NOTE

up front

WHO ELSE IS READY FOR 2022? Let’s see what the numerologists are saying. Expert Josh Siegel says that in 2022, there will be an emphasis on getting back to normal and rebuilding ourselves. However, Siegel warns that the turbulent energy we’ve experienced will probably continue right into the new year. Siegel encourages us to believe we can all contribute to finding common ground and working together to make our home and community a better place. Other numerologists sum up the digits 2+0+2+2 = 6, which means it will be a 6 Universal Year — the year of accepting responsibility. After the numerous changes and adjustments brought by the 5 Universal Year in 2021 (2+0+2+1 = 5), the world must adapt to a new pace and make the most of the opportunities in our developing new reality. The year 2022 may bring you more stability if you feel as if you were floating aimlessly through 2021. Nonetheless, with that grounded feeling comes the additional responsibility of redefining your relationship with those around you. The year 2022 is all about relationships. A fated encounter could enable you to develop into the individual you are meant to be during this lifetime, acting as the guide for you to become who you are intended to be. In 2021, most of us, not all, focused more on ourselves. However, in 2022, it is encouraged to refocus on the people in your life and remind yourself just how valuable their presence is. You need to show your love and respect for the people in your life for a

wide variety of reasons. Let them know how valuable they are by showing them how much they matter. The numerologists suggest you expand your social circle, as the 6 Universal Year will be sending interesting and meaningful people your way, increasing your chances of meeting someone who will significantly influence your life for years to come. Stability is the grounding and critical goal for all in 2022 as we leave behind the uncertainty of the past year. It can provide a considerable amount of constancy and ease. Another traditional celebration with a meaning behind it is the Chinese New Year, celebrated on Feb. 1 and traditionally celebrated for 16 days. In 2022, it’s the year of the Tiger and refers to anyone born in 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974,1986, 1998, and 2022. It is predicted that people born in a year of the Tiger will be brave, competitive, unpredictable, and confident. Their zodiac birth year (Ben Ming Nian) falls in 2022, which is considered bad luck. However, do not fear. It is recommended that you add something red to your outfit, but there’s a catch – it must be a piece of clothing gifted to you from a spouse, family member or friend. Whatever 2022 has in store for us, always remember que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be. This holiday season, spread joy and love to those around you. May your lives be brightened by this festive season. Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year. Cheers!

FAQS

How do I store my Shopkins? Shopkins can be stored in commercially made carrying cases or in a DIY Shopkins storage container made from discount store items, recycled materials or upcycled furniture. How do you build a storage organizer? The sky is the limit when designing your own Shopkins organizer DIY project. You can build your own storage organizer with wood boards and plastic bins, stacking wooden crates together, or building your own wall mounted shelving units. You can also create your own Shopkins organizer DIY project using recyclable materials found in your own home, upcycling old furniture or repurposing older items like sewing kits or tackle boxes.

SIMPLE DIY SHOPKINS STORAGE AND ORGANIZATION If your child is hooked on collecting Shopkins toys and accessories, you will know how important having organized Shopkins storage space is. Because these popular toys are small, they are easy to lose, step on, get caught in your drain pipes, laundry or household appliances, or find their way into other unwanted areas of your home. Keeping the tiny toys in one place is not only more convenient and enjoyable for your child, but a good DIY Shopkins storage unit helps keep your home looking clutter-free. The manufacturer of Shopkins and other cityparent.com

companies have responded to the overwhelming need for organized solutions by designing exclusive Shopkins storage cases and small toy display units. However, if you don’t want to spend the money on commercial products, you can quickly and easily make your own DIY Shopkins organizers. There are several DIY Shopkins storage solutions you can design using common household recyclable items or products found at your local thrift or dollar stores. You can create your own DIY Shopkins storage cases with mini-baskets, stackable sorting

cases, mini totes, multi-drawer units and plastic tubs with lids. If you prefer to recycle household goods—egg cartons, wax melt packaging, shoeboxes or other small containers are perfect for creating your DIY Shopkins storage. Attaching several colourful plastic ice trays or thin strips of shelving wood create attractive DIY Shopkins display sections in your child’s play area or bedroom. The DIY displays take very little time to set up and create the perfect place for your child to showcase their favourite Shopkins characters.

What is the best toy organizer? The best DIY Shopkins organizers have multiple drawers, bins or sections to keep your child’s toys sorted and organized. Designing a toy organizer that you can build on also takes less room. How do you categorize toys? Label your DIY Shopkins storage units to categorize your child’s toys into groups, collections, seasons, value of rarity and colour. Your organizers should also categorize your Shopkins by character and accessories. Other toys can also be categorized by type, material, size and educational qualities. How do you store lots of toys? Using stackable containers, units with multiple drawers or multispaced shelving fixtures that can hold several baskets or storage bins are the best solutions for storing lots of toys in one convenient place.

WHAT MAKES THE HOLIDAYS SPECIAL? WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM

Whether it’s the first sign of snow, feeling “Jack Frost nipping at your nose,” or hearing a chorus of Jingle Bells – it’s not your imagination playing tricks, after all, ‘tis the season. So, whether you’re decking your halls, reviving treasured family recipes or planning a safe family gathering – if there is one thing constant, family memories and traditions will be remembered and renewed. Along the way, another chapter in our holiday celebrations will be marked and passed down to the next generation. What traditions will you be observing this holiday season? “We lived in the bush – literally. My father was a trapper and our depended on the tra life p lines. The one thing I remember when I wa growing up in the Mé s tis communit y in For t McMurray was always having our families tog ether for important occ asions. Even though mother would make my bannock bread all the time, it always seeme special around Christ d mastime. There’s not hing bet ter than freshl baked bannock and lat y hering slices with bu tter – pure heaven.” Wayne Bourque, person al trainer, Wayne Bourq ue Boxercise

“Christmas for me was always about the gifts. That’s it. Just the gifts. Getting them, not giving them. Giving them is a lot of work. You have to buy them, wrap them, and then label them. But getting them! What a fabulous feeling. A feeling of power, victory and strength. Ripping it open and throwing the wrapping paper everywhere. What a rush. Oh, and it’s great to see my family, too.”

“For the past few years, we’ve started a new tradition with our two children where we video call our parents (and the kids’ grandparents) Christmas morning, before opening gifts. We felt, as parents, it was really important for our kids to know where the gifts were coming from and to make those personal connections to family over items. Also, we’ve made it a tradition to go sledding together in the afternoon. It’s an absolute blast and always ends with a warm cup of hot chocolate.” Andrew Phung _ co-creator, actor - Run the Burbs – CBC TV and CBC Gem in January 2022 cityparent.com

BROTHERS, SISTERS, STRANGERS WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM As we rush around preparing for the holidays, we can be overwhelmed by the Hallmark versions of what a family gathering looks like. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” may be playing on the radio, but for some, that perfect Norman Rockwell image is far from reality – especially between siblings. Let’s face it – the elephant in the room is estrangement. “There is a deep stigma when you don’t have deep relations with a family member,” says Fern Schumer Chapman, whose book Brothers, Sisters, Strangers: Sibling Estrangement and the Road to Reconciliation takes the reader on her journey of a sibling relationship. Unable to find a book that addressed the issue, Chapman places her story alongside supportive studies from behavioural scientists and other experts by exposing the elephant in the room. For the better part of 40 years, Chapman was estranged from her brother. Then when the possibility of reconciliation surfaced, she decided to share her memoir while addressing the social science behind her experience. “When someone says, ‘I don’t get along with my mother,’ people may respond by rolling their eyes in agreement. If you say you’re getting divorced, people may not flinch. But when you say you can’t get along with your brother or 14

CITY PARENT | December 2021

sister – it raises questions about you,” says Chapman. Although there are books about family estrangements, nothing exists specifically about siblings. And as Chapman points out, if you’re fortunate, sibling relationships are the longest ones you have in your life. “Brothers and sisters are first playmates; some people call them first spouses – they instill in one another necessary social qualities like tolerance, generosity, loyalty, and those qualities affect relationships in the future with friends, colleagues and lovers.” Is reconciliation possible? Chapman includes a chapter about the Dignity Model derived by Dr. Donna Hicks, an associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. Hicks has worked as a third-party conflict-resolution intermediary, facilitating dialogues on the world stage between fractioned parties, and Chapman uses the Dignity Model as steps towards reconciliation. “Number one, you have to sit down together face-to-face. You have to listen without interrupting – without challenging each other’s story. The hardest part is letting go of the anger,” says Chapman. But not every relationship should reconcile. “Some are just too toxic, and you have to assess if this is something you want to enter into again.”

By sharing her experiences, Chapman has lifted the veil and provided insight into a pathway to reconciliation. The holidays can be difficult for estranged siblings; but then again, maybe be grateful that you don’t have to deal with family drama – at least not this year.

Last word from Scott Schumer, Chapman’s brother: “I hope our story holds out the possibility – even for brothers and sisters who have been complete strangers to each other for decades – that they, too, might return by the road they came.” cityparent.com
