pet odours D
ogs, cats, birds, and lizards have evolved from wild animals and outdoor companions to become beloved, largely domesticated members of the family. The number of pets in homes across the country continues to grow. According to Statista, as of March 2017, 94.2 million cats and 89.7 million dogs were estimated to live in the United States as pets. Canada’s Pet Wellness report estimates that there
are approximately 7.9 million cats and 5.9 million dogs in Canada. Over time, pet owners grow accustomed to their pets’ antics, messes and even their odours. Dealing with smells is par for the course for pet owners, and many become desensitized to certain common smells. But when company is on the way or people are thinking about selling their homes, pet odors must be addressed. Even though it will take effort, homeowners can freshen their homes and eliminate unpleasant pet-related smells.

Cats and dogs can leave behind fur, dander, food messes, and more. Eliminating the debris that pets create can reduce odors. Sweeping, vacuuming and mopping floors can help as well. Air purifiers can help remove odours and allergens from the air.
They’re relatively inexpensive and can be placed in rooms that pets frequent.

Launder pet beds, cloth toys, blankets, and any other items that pets lounge on. Sweat, saliva and dander can cause these fabrics to become stinky, and, in turn, make the house smell worse.

keep pets clean
Most pets are very good at selfgrooming, but can benefit from a spa treatment once in awhile. Dogs that spend ample time outdoors or frequently get wet and dirty may need routine baths. Ask a professional groomer what he or she recommends to address potent pet odours. Neutralizing pet odours takes effort, but it can make for a more pleasant-smelling home environment. ■ — Metro Creative

hiring movers
BY CHUCK RESNICK
here’s an old rule in business: what is not in writing was never said. Although some agreements may need just a handshake, others that involve a multitude of variables require a contract so that all the parties understand what is expected of them. This is particularly true when you hire professional movers. You’re obviously the “who,” but we also need to know exactly “what,” “where” and “when” in order to transport your items to your new place. Within those general categories, there can be many details, and finding out about them on moving day is counterproductive. Think ahead. The first thing to do is find a reputable mover. You can check online with the Better Business Bureau or the Canadian Association of Movers, and of course, find out who friends and family members have used. Select a company that has a tried-and-true track record. Then ask questions, and remember that the movers should be asking you a lot of questions as well to determine exactly what the move will entail.

need a fall boost? try these supplements W hile a healthy diet should provide nearly all the nutrients you need, many of us can’t eat healthily all the time. Consider these supplements to help give you a boost, especially as we head into cold and flu season. Multivitamin. Think of this as an extra insurance policy to help you get all the essential nutrients you need to stay healthy. In general, the following groups are most likely to have nutritional needs that a multi may help meet: people over 60, women of childbearing age and people on weight-loss diets. A recent study of almost 1,500 men found that taking a daily multivitamin may reduce the overall risk of cancer and of cataracts. Vitamin D. The sun’s rays help our bodies produce this key vitamin, which aids in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. We also get vitamin D from the foods we eat, including fatty fish, fortified plant-based beverages and eggs. Ensuring you get enough vitamin D in your diet is key during our tough Canadian winters, as a deficiency may lead to osteoporosis and other ailments. According to Statistics Canada, about four in 10 people have insufficient vitamin D during the winter months. If you think that you’re not getting enough vitamin D from diet alone, consider a supplement. In particular, Health Canada recommends that everyone over the age of 50 should take a daily vitamin D supplement of 400 IU.
Magnesium. This essential mineral supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heart beat steady, and helps bones remain strong. We get magnesium from the foods we eat; most foods that are high in magnesium are also high in fibre. These include nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables and legumes. While most of us get enough magnesium through diet, Statistics Canada reports that about three in 10 Canadians
are deficient. Symptoms of magnesium deficiency include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and weakness. Talk to your healthcare team about a magnesium supplement if you think you have a deficiency. Head to your local Canadian Health Food Association member health food store to find a wide selection of essential supplements. Find your nearest location at chfa.ca. ■ — News Canada

how to help kids learn to love
R
eading is a passion for many people. But even avid readers may not know just how far back their love of reading stretches. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who find pleasure in reading have the potential to become lifelong readers. In addition, studies have shown that reading to children can help kids become familiar with sounds, words and language, helping them in their earliest stages of cognitive development.

So, adults who love books might be able to trace their passion for pageturners to those times their mothers and fathers read aloud to them as youngsters. Parents who want their children to learn to love reading can rely on various techniques to accomplish that goal. Make reading a routine. Routine is a necessity for parents, helping children learn when it's time to eat, play and go to sleep, among other things. Parents can include reading
to their children as part of their daily routines. As noted, doing so will promote language skills and cognitive development while also acclimating children to books and providing valuable time for them to bond with their parents. Create a distraction-free reading environment. When reading to children, parents can create an environment with little to no distractions. This allows kids to focus on their parents' voices as well as the story they're being told. Parents can turn

reading off the television and the radio when reading to their kids. In addition, moms and dads should leave smartphones or tablets in another room so they aren't distracted by alerts or tempted to check for incoming messages or emails. Read aloud together. Some children may shy away from reading if they struggle in their initial efforts to read. That does not mean kids won't ultimately enjoy reading, it just means a little more effort may be required on parents' part to
help kids overcome any issues they have. Reading aloud to children can help little ones learn how to become good readers, as they will learn how to pronounce words and form sentences. Kids who know how to read can be encouraged to read to their parents, which can instill self-esteem. If kids struggle with certain words or sentences when reading aloud, parents can read those words and/or sentences aloud to them and ask them to repeat the phrases back.
Let kids pick their own books. When reading to youngsters, whether they're babies, toddlers or already in school, parents can let sons and daughters choose their own books. Children might be especially enthusiastic about reading if they're allowed to choose their own books and stories. Reading can benefit children from the earliest stages of their lives all the way through adulthood. Parents can take various steps to foster a love of reading in their children. ■ — Metro Creative

5 tips for easy and nutritious
packable lunches I
f back-to-school season has you scrambling to figure out what to put in your kids’ lunches, you’re not alone. A recent survey from President’s Choice Children’s Charity showed that half of Canadians find it difficult to pack a nutritious lunch for their child, despite it being a crucial factor in school success. To help build lunches your kids will actually eat, Whitney Hussain, a registered dietitian, shares some outof-the box ideas to add a little excitement into packed lunches.
• Use different types or shapes of bread to add variety. Throw in a veggie pizza on a whole wheat pita for a healthier take on a classic meal, or shape sandwiches with a cookie cutter to make them fun to look at and eat. • Let them pack a partitioned container, selecting from a variety of fresh items prepared at the beginning of the week. The only catch is to ask them to cover at least three food groups. Kids are more likely to eat foods they’ve chosen, so it’s a great way to keep lunch out of the bin.
Win an Amazon Gift Card!
• Try DIY salad and fruit wraps using rice-paper and yogurt or dressing. Little ones love finger food and the translucent wraps look amazing with brightly coloured veggies or fruit inside. • Get things rolling with some tortilla pinwheel sandwiches. They’ll have just as much fun decorating and rolling them as they will eating them. Find more advice, recipe ideas or to speak with a registered dietitian in your area, head to www.bookadietitian.ca.■ — News Canada

Insufficient sleep causes more problems than many people may know. Fatigue after a poor night’s sleep might seem like an inconvenience that can be easily rectified, but the long-term effects of insufficient sleep are significant.

how to make bedrooms more conducive to sleep
A
ccording to the National Sleep Foundation, researchers have found a link between insufficient sleep and an elevated risk for type 2 diabetes. In one such study exploring that potential link, researchers asked healthy adults to sleep just four hours per night for six nights. At the conclusion of that period, participants’ ability to break down glucose had decreased by an average of 40 percent and reached levels that are consistent with those of older adults at risk for diabetes. Insufficient sleep may be linked to any of a host of factors, including one’s bedroom environment. An environment that promotes restful sleep can help people suffering from insomnia or restlessness improve the quality of their sleep. The NSF offers the following tips to make bedrooms more conducive to sleep.
set the right temperature
The NSF notes that research indicates a bedroom temperature of roughly 18 C makes for the best sleep. Human beings’ body temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, reaching their lowest level around 5 a.m. each day before slowly climbing as morning begins. A room that is too warm overnight may interfere with this natural dip, leading to restlessness. If necessary, install a programmable thermostat in the bedroom so the temperature in the room remains steady and in line with your body’s natural temperature fluctuations.
address allergens
Some people may trace their sleeping difficulties to allergies. Dust and pollen in the
bedroom can make for a disruptive night’s sleep. Wash bedding once per week in hot water if dust mites are proving problematic. If pillows cannot be washed, dry them using high heat to kill dust mites. In addition, cover the mattress in a mattress protector that guards against allergens and dust mites. If pollen is finding its way into the bedroom, always keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season.
use a white noise machine
Noise is another potential contributor to poor sleep. The NSF notes that some people may have their sleep interrupted by noise even if they don’t know it. White noise machines are often used to help infants sleep, but such machines can be just as effective at helping adults. The NSF notes that the constant ambient sound created by white noise machines masks activity both inside and outside the house, helping men and women enjoy more restful sleep.
draw blinds, shades or curtains
Waking up to sunlight each day might be nice, but that morning sunlight may be interrupting your sleep. Early morning rays from the sun might be triggering your body to wake up before it’s had adequate rest, so make sure blinds, shades and curtains are drawn before going to bed at night so you are not woken up prematurely in the morning. Making bedrooms more conducive to sleep is one way men and women can improve the quality of their nightly sleep. ■
