As winter approaches, transform your home into a warm, inviting space. Here are some tips:
stop drafts
Seal gaps around windows and doors to help to keep cold air out and save on energy bills.
add indoor plants
They improve air quality and add freshness to your space. Snake plants, spider plants and peace lilies are particularly effective.
maintain humidity levels
Using a humidifier to prevent dryness will help make your home warmer and more comfortable.
layer with soft furnishings
Use rugs, heavy curtains and flannel or fleece sheets to add warmth and texture.
embrace Danish hygge
Surround yourself with things that make you happy, like books, blankets and a warm cup of tea.
optimize heating efficiency
Make sure your heating system is serviced and working efficiently. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature and reduce energy consumption when you’re not home.
use draft-stoppers
Place draft-stoppers at the base of doors to prevent cold air from entering through gaps. This small investment can make a big difference in keeping your home warm.
cook at home
Use your kitchen to cook warm meals and bake. The heat from the oven and stove will help warm up your home, and the smell of fresh food adds to the coziness.
add area rugs
Lay down area rugs, especially in rooms with hard flooring, to add warmth underfoot. They also help insulate the floor and keep rooms cozy.
use thermal curtains
Install thermal or insulated curtains on your windows to help keep the cold out and retain the warmth inside. This can be especially effective during the night when temperatures drop.
Creating a cozy space is essential for enjoying the winter months. Learn more about keeping your home cozy and safe this winter at belairdirect.com.
pack like a pro
Moving is a very personal thing and people who hire moving companies ask for varying levels of service.
Take packing, for example. Some clients want to pack their own items, while others prefer a turnkey solution where the mover does it all. There are, of course, advantages to each approach, so it is important to choose what’s best for you.
the professional packer
Most who choose to pack themselves do so because it saves money on the move. That is true only if the items make it from Point A to Point B in one piece. Moving companies will not be responsible for items damaged because of poor packing.
The most critical element in packing is taking into consideration how far and long the items will remain in the boxes and containers during transit. Consumers often underestimate just how much jostling their items will endure on the various highways and other roadways on their trip to your new home or business. Accessories such as lamps may seem to be packed well, but may shift inside the carton and break or chip as a result.
Professional packers have the experience to know exactly what is best for various categories of items, depending on the size and distance of the move, and they pack accordingly. They can also provide excellent advice on how to mark your boxes for ease of unpacking, and on the items to pack last and unpack first.

Having your mover do the packing offers you the peace of mind in knowing that if the unexpected happens, your possessions will be repaired or replaced.
the DIY packer
At Two Men and A Truck, trained packing professionals help clients with as much or as little of the packing and unpacking as required, and we sell a full range of packing supplies. Those who are willing and capable of packing themselves need to consider the proper materials and containers that will help to ensure a successful move. There are also significant considerations to keep in mind, such as not packing explosive or
Although you can obtain boxes from places like grocery stores, check with your mover, who may sell proper packing materials that will save you work and worry. Some of the items you will need are tape dispensers, newsprint, markers, pads and bubble wrap – and there are many sizes and strengths of boxes available. There is a 1.5 cubic-foot box that is often referred to as a book or record box. It’s fairly small and is designed to hold small, heavy items like food jars or cans, flatware, CDs, etc. The next size up is a lamp or lampshade box, which is 3 cubic feet in size. The sizes go up from there, to 4.5 and 6 cubic feet for lighter objects such as pillows and stuffed animals.
These are just some of the moving materials that are available today. Whether you choose to pack your own items or have your mover do it, be sure you choose a company with a solid track record for providing topnotch service. Visit www.twomen.ca. ■

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but hosting large gatherings can sometimes make it a stressful time too. To add more cheer and less fear this season, here are five tips to take the stress out of hosting family and friends.
prep ahead
Take care of as much organizing and preparation as possible before the day of the event. If you’re having a sit-down meal, set the table a day or two ahead. Print personal-
ized place card settings using your home printer to add a classy touch. Don’t worry about cleaning too much in advance – your guests are not coming to see if you’ve dusted the furniture thoroughly. Focus on the areas that attendees will use the most – including the bathroom. After the party is the time to do a deep clean.
exercise mindful menu preparation
If you’re serving food, you want to ensure the food is fresh and that you’re considerate of dietary needs
to prevent any illnesses. When sending out the invitations, include a request to be notified of any allergies or other dietary restrictions. Use ice packs and warming trays to keep cold things cold and hot things hot. Anything perishable should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours.
outsource the eats
Hosting is a lot of work (and can be costly), so don’t feel obligated to prepare an entire multi-course meal from scratch. Consider serving heatand-eat frozen appetizers, ordering takeout or even hiring a caterer to take care of everything. Another option to help feel less overwhelmed is to host a potluck. Remember to share any food restrictions you learned with your caterer or guests.
delegate as much as you can
Beyond bringing items for a potluck, don’t be shy about asking guests to help out with other party planning. Ask your musician friend to create a curated playlist, get your designer cousin to help out with decorations and designate someone to be the party’s paparazzi who will be responsible for capturing candid memories.
share happy, tangible memories
Make the event truly memorable by creating an onsite photo station for your guests. With a printer like the new HP Envy 6100 series, you can print professional-quality images at home through an easy-to-use app. Guests can connect through Wi-Fi and send photos from their phones directly to print in the moment creating lasting takeaways to cherish long after your hosting duties are completed.

support your mental health this year
The holiday season – and heading into a new year, while often joyful, can also bring heightened stress, anxiety and even feelings of loss or exhaustion. It’s a time when the support of others can make all the difference. Here are a few tips to safeguard your mental health and extend care to those around you during this busy season and beyond.
1. Move your body. Exercise, even when it feels like the last thing you want to do, can be a powerful tool for boosting your mood. Just 15 minutes of aerobic activity – whether it’s a brisk walk, a dance session in your living room or a quick jog – can release endorphins that help alleviate stress.
2. Seek professional help. If the holiday blues become overwhelming, professional support is just a call away. The Government of Canada’s 211 hotline provides 24/7 access to mental health professionals who can offer immediate help and connect you with local resources tailored to your needs.
3. Reach out to someone you trust. Don’t underestimate the power of connection. Confide in a trusted friend, neighbour, coworker or family member about how you’re feeling. A simple coffee date, a video chat or even a phone call can make a world of difference. Sometimes, just knowing someone is there to listen can lift a heavy burden.
4. Give back to make a difference. The simple act of giving, especially to those in need, can quickly help shift your mood to feeling more positive. Every second, a person receives food assistance from World Vision Canada, for example, in partnership with the World Food Programme. It only takes seconds to give, and your gift will be multiplied seven times, so $15 that feeds a child for one month will grow to $105. Turning hunger into hope will help anyone feel better.
5. Practice mindfulness and selfcompassion. During the hustle and bustle of everyday life, take moments to slow down and focus on the present. Mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing or meditation, can help reduce stress. Remember to be kind to yourself; it’s okay to take breaks and set boundaries to protect your well-being.
6. Practice gratitude. Taking time to acknowledge what you’re grateful for can shift your perspective and improve mental health. Whether it’s a small daily practice or a heartfelt thank you to someone who’s made a difference in your life, focusing on gratitude can foster resilience and a sense of peace.
