where to find
mental health support this holiday season
F
ew things fill the heart like the knowledge that someone else cares about how you’re feeling and doing. But many of us feel our stress and anxiety intensify during the holiday season. Some of us have experienced loss that is magnified this time of year, or we come to this season exhausted or dreading the busyness ahead. During this often pressure-filled time, how can we guard our own mental health, while looking out for others? Here are five suggestions:

5 tips
to look and feel your best this holiday season
T
he holidays are meant to be a time of joy and merriment for many of us. Whatever you celebrate, from Hannukah, to Christmas, to the Winter Solstice, here are some tips to help you enjoy them to the fullest.
embrace the spirit of the season
Even if you’re more of a natural grinch than one of Santa’s elves, leaning into the festive season can help you appreciate small joys – which in turn could improve your mental health. Getting involved with your family and your neighbourhood can help you feel more connected to others too. By building a gingerbread house with the grandkids, spearheading a secret Santa gift exchange at work or doing a charity clothing drive, you can warm hearts at home and in your community.

choose a go-to outfit you feel great in
Uncomfortable clothing can quickly ruin what should be a good time. Instead of scrambling to find a decent fit right before the occasion, go through your closet a few weeks beforehand and put together at least one look you feel confident in. This could be like something of a uniform for seasonal celebrations to come – knowing you’ve got this look in your back pocket can eliminate a major source of stress and leave you feeling great even at a last-minute event.
be kind to yourself
It’s easy to overextend yourself with parties, festive dinners, gift shopping, children’s recitals and more all demanding attention at this time of year. So, make sure you set aside time to let your mind and body rest and recharge in positive ways.
Try reading a book, playing with your dog or talking to a friend. Don’t give yourself too hard a time if things don’t go quite according to plan.
aim for moderation
The holiday season can be extra hectic, making it easy to let your otherwise average or healthy eating habits slide and then feel sluggish or moody as a result. But, even if we indulge in more sweet treats than usual, it’s always a good idea to strive for balance. So don’t forget about your fruits and veggies and try to keep a short-list of easy,
11
pantry-based meals on hand for nights when you’re at risk of chowing down on cookies, chocolates and chips for dinner – your body will thank you later.
quit smoking
If you smoke cigarettes, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health and well-being. Health Canada says that your blood pressure can start to improve within twenty minutes of your last cigarette, your risk of heart attack begins to drop in 24 hours and you can breathe more easily about two weeks later. While you may face with-
drawal symptoms for a few weeks, the benefits and stress-relief of no longer smoking can last much longer. There are many methods when it comes to quitting smoking, from going cold turkey, to using nicotine replacement therapy or trying group counselling. There are also other ways to quit you may not have considered. Overall, setting a date and making a plan can make the whole thing easier to follow through with. Find information, tools and other support to help you be smoke-free at canada.ca/quit-smoking. ■

make future holidays merrier by properly
packing seasonal decorations
H
BY CHUCK RESNICK
oliday preparations such as tree trimming, present wrapping and hanging lights help get us in the holiday spirit and are lots of fun. But thoughtful packing of seasonal decorations and materials at the end of the holidays for the next year, can keep the fun in what is for some, a stressful time. In other words, it pays to plan, even 12 months ahead. Careful packing and organization prevents damage and breakage, and ensures you can find everything next year. It is worth taking the extra time to organize and preserve your decorations for next year. Here are some tips from TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® to keep in mind while packing away holiday decorations:
delicate items
• Wrap breakables in paper or bubble wrap. Do not use newspaper - the print may wear off on ornaments. Use tissue or packing paper. Instead of throwing away used paper or junk mail, run it through a paper shredder, it makes great packing filler. • Decorations that contain photographs or food should be sealed in an air tight bag to keep them safe. Sealing photos preserves them and the scent from any food item will attract insects or mice where ever they are stored. • Boxes with dividers are best to pack
4Rent.ca
ornaments in. There are cardboard boxes made especially for fragile items. They come with adjustable inserts that forms individual cells for delicate items. These “Dish Pack” boxes are very popular at all our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK branches • Keep extra hangers, hooks and ornament parts in a labeled bag or box.
lights
• To prevent tangles, wrap lights around empty gift wrapping paper tubes. • Leave the plug accessible by taping the ends of the light strands to the end of the tube. Next year you can quickly test the lights before unwinding them. • Store coloured lights in a dark place to prevent fading –- especially blues, greens and purples.
wrapping paper
• Hanging garment bags provides good storage for wrapping paper rolls. Use outside pockets for gift tags, cards and tissue paper. • To protect used rolls of paper, cut an empty wrapping paper tube from end to end and slide it over the roll. • Ribbons and bows can be saved and reused, pack loosely so they keep their shape.
some other considerations • Wrap holiday candles individually in cellophane and store in a cool
place so they do not melt together. • Pack an “open first” box. Place the decorations you use first in here with essentials such as extension cords. • Use a “Wardrobe Box” to hang and store seasonal clothing that you only wear twice a year like that special snowman sweater from your mother-in-law or that flashing Christmas tie. This way you can find it, wear it, and store it away on a hanger easily. • If you haven’t used a decoration in a few years donate it. If it is damaged, get rid of it. • Take special care if you are storing your items in a damp area like your basement. Don’t store boxes near sources of heat and moisture. • The most important tip is to label every box. The more detailed the description, the easier it will be to find things. Use different colours to distinguish different holidays. For example, use orange for Halloween, brown for Thanksgiving, and red or green for Christmas. • Take a digital photo of special care items like snow globes or wreaths, print them off on regular paper and tape the photo to the outside of the box as an easy description of what’s inside. All Two Men and a Truck branches in Canada offers a variety of storage boxes and packing supplies suitable to store all your decorative treasures. Visit www.twomen.ca for a location near you. ■

green gift ideas for the holidays
W
hile red and green are the typical Christmas colours, you can also add eco-friendly gifts this holiday season. Here are four green gifts that will warm the recipient’s heart.
green that grows
Christmas falls just after the Winter Solstice – the day of the year with the least amount of sunlight. And if it isn’t already covering the ground, we know that snow is on the way. Help brighten up the indoors by gifting a plant. A pilea, also known as a friendship plant,

meal. Or premix the dry ingredients for your favourite cookie or brownie recipe and share in a decorative container.
get creative
repurpose treasures
Rather than buying something your recipient may not really want or need, give a gift from the heart by making them something. Tap into your personal creative side. If your hobby is stitching or painting, give the gift of art. Maybe you’re a budding chef. In that case, whip up a bulk batch of soup or chili and put it in freezable containers for a readymade
The term regifting has a bad rap. To some it might mean getting rid of something not worth keeping. But rather than buying someone something new, you can find something in your home that you’ve previously enjoyed – say, a favourite book – and wrap it up with a little note explaining why it was so important to you that you wanted to share it.

share the wealth
A “green” gift that also supports the work of charities can be very meaningful for the recipient and the charity. For example, beekeeping kits for $60 and beehives for $100 from World Vision’s gift catalogue provide honey for families to use or to sell or trade in a sustainable small business to support themselves. The bees also pollinate vegetation to help the local ecosystem thrive. For wooden pieces, Grech suggests walls painted in cooler hues such as Yarmouth Blue HC-150 or even Bold Blue 2064-10 to bring out the beauty in naturally warm wood and let the nuances and patina of vintage furniture shine.”

If you have vintage furniture in a modern esthetic, Grech says “consider a deep hue like Mink 2112-10 or a bold red like Flamenco CSP-1195 that will make a statement and complement the strong lines of modern furniture.”
don’t replace, repaint
Breathe new life into vintage pieces that don’t fit your current décor by repainting them with Advance inte-
rior paint. For a weathered or aged look, consider a whitewash effect on clean, sanded wood furniture. This can be done with a white wood stain or by thinning down paint with glaze or water, using both a brush and rags to apply and then remove excess to achieve the desired effect. Don’t forget to protect the surface after with an acrylic urethane such as Stays Clear. ■

Replacing your cabinets is pricey and messy. But you’ll amaze yourself
with how much personality a fresh coat of paint can add to your kitchen. Brighten up dark doors to create a bright, clean and airy feel. Take plain white cabinets and drawers, and paint on a layer of mahogany sophistication. Feeling bold? Paint with a bright accent colour like red or blue

The great thing about swapping your lighting setup is that it will
enhance all your other DIY choices. Go with a central hanging light for a classic feel, or a set of track lights to put the spotlight exactly where you want it. Many kitchens have an unused light fixture in the ceiling, so you can even add a second set of lights without having to worry
DIY that makes an impact doesn’t have to mean everything but the kitchen sink. A new faucet is easy to install, and it can make a surprising difference to the feel of your kitchen. Look for one that matches form with function: a pull-down faucet will let you more easily keep the sink pristine, and if it uses Delta’s Touch2O, you can turn it on with a tap anywhere on the faucet and avoid messy handles during meal prep. A timeless design with a modern feel can fit into just about any kitchen. Find more information at deltafaucet.ca. ■ — News Canada December 8–22, 2023
