up front

NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLUTIONS New Year’s resolutions have a fascinating history that dates back centuries. It all began with the ancient Babylonians, who were among the first to make promises to their gods at the start of each year. They believed that by keeping these promises, they would earn favour from the gods and have a prosperous year ahead. This tradition then spread to the Romans, who made promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. Today, we continue this age-old tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions, although the reasons behind them have evolved. Many people see the start of a new year as an opportunity for self-improvement and personal growth. It’s a chance to reflect on the past year, identify areas for improvement, and set goals for the future. Whether it’s losing weight, quitting a bad habit, or learning a new skill, New Year’s resolutions provide a sense of hope and motivation to make positive changes in our lives. So, as we welcome the new year, let’s embrace the tradition of setting

resolutions and strive to make the most of the fresh start it offers us. It’s a chance to leave behind the old and embrace the new. As we look towards the future, we are filled with hope and excitement for what’s to come. The phrase “new beginnings” perfectly captures this feeling of optimism and possibility. This year let’s make the most of our new beginning. Let’s take the time to reflect on the past and learn from our experiences. Let’s set new goals and make positive changes in our lives. And let’s not forget to take some time for ourselves, whether it’s planning a vacation or simply taking a break to recharge. As we embark on this new journey, remember we have the power to shape our own destiny. With hard work, determination, and a positive attitude, we can create the life we want. So, here’s to 2024, a new year filled with endless possibilities and the courage to make our dreams a reality. Happy New Year!

THE ORIGINS OF BABY NEW YEAR Excitement for a new year abounds on January 1. Baby New Year is one of the more recognizable symbols of the New Year’s holiday, particularly in print advertisements and television commercials. Perhaps you’ve wondered what role Baby New Year plays in the celebration? While he may seem like a relatively modern icon, this cultural mainstay has a lengthy history. One theory suggests Baby New Year was celebrated as far back as 600 B.C. in ancient Greece, when a child was paraded around in a basket upon the arrival of the new year. The baby represented rebirth, and Greeks believed their god of wine, Dionysus, was reborn on New Year’s as the spirit of fertility. Other historians say that the custom even predates the Greeks to the ancient Egyptians. Even though the baby new year custom was originally frowned upon by Christians and deemed a pagan tradition, eventually Christians

6

CITY PARENT | January 2024

embraced the symbol as well, albeit in a different way. The end of the year is marked by the birth of the Christ child, and this became a special way to interpret Baby New Year. In modern times, Baby New Year has lost any connection to a deity or religious figure. Rather, he is now interpreted as a child who arrives at the start of the year and eventually ages into Father Time. The baby

is depicted as an infant or toddler wearing a diaper and a sash with the year he is representing (and often a top hat). He is sometimes depicted holding or associated with an hourglass, a noisemaker or other item either pertaining to time or New Year’s Day festivities. Father Time is often portrayed as an elderly man with a long, gray beard. The Baby New Year/ Father Time message boils down to

“out with the old and in with the new.” People bid goodbye to Father Time and welcome this cherubic child who will carry them through the next 12 months and grow with them. The Baby New Year idea eventually developed into a “First Born” tradition as well. Many towns, cities and hospitals have instituted contests awarding the first baby born in the new year the title of “Baby New Year”. Such children are often the subjects of local news coverage and get their picture in the newspaper. Gifts, such as complimentary diapers, a case of formula or baby food or other baby supplies may be offered. In addition, private companies may offer their own gifts and recognition to the lucky child and his or her family in turn for complementary publicity. Baby New Year is a symbol of the fresh start the new year brings. Its relevance in celebrations has endured for centuries. – Metro Creative

bath time

HOW NEW PARENTS CAN APPROACH BATHING A NEWBORN New parents are faced with a host of unfamiliar challenges. Navigating nightly interruptions to sleep and changing diapers are among the more notable hurdles new parents must clear, but a host of other activities, such as bathing, require a new approach when a newborn is involved. Extra caution is required when new parents are bathing their bundles of joy. Bathing a newborn can be nervewracking, especially for new parents. These tips courtesy of the American Academy of Dermatology can help parents calm their nerves and enjoy bath time with their babies. Prior to the umbilical cord stump falling off Dermatologists recommend giving children sponge baths until the umbilical cord stump falls off and heals. The Mayo Clinic notes that the stump typically falls off within one to three weeks, and during this time parents should keep the stump dry. That need to keep the stump dry is why sponge baths make sense until it falls off, as it’s easier to do so when bathing babies with a sponge as opposed to in a tub. When giving a sponge bath, lay the baby down on a comfortable flat surface. Keep the baby warm by wrapping him or her in a towel and only exposing the part of the baby you’re washing. Using lukewarm water, gently wipe the baby’s face and scalp with a dampened washcloth, making sure to clean the creases in the baby’s neck and behind the ears. Gently wash the rest of the baby’s body with the washcloth, making sure to rinse off and dry each area before moving on to another part of the child’s body. 8

CITY PARENT | January 2024

DERMATOLOGISTS RECOMMEND GIVING CHILDREN SPONGE BATHS UNTIL THE UMBILICAL CORD STUMP FALLS OFF AND HEALS.

After the umbilical cord stump has fallen off The AAD recommends parents switch to traditional bathing once the umbilical cord stump has fallen off and the area has healed. • Prepare the bathing area ahead of time. A sink or a small plastic tub can be a great place to bathe a newborn.

The AAD recommends gathering supplies, including a washcloth, fragrance-free baby soap and, if necessary, a baby shampoo prior to bath time. • Place the baby in lukewarm water. Once supplies have been gathered, the baby’s bath can be filled with lukewarm water. Parents can test the

water on their wrist to ensure it’s not too hot before placing the child in it. Gently guide the baby, feet first, into the water, making sure that most of the child’s body is well above the water. Periodically pour warm water over the baby’s body to keep him or her warm. • Follow the same procedure when you were still sponge bathing. Gently wash the baby’s face and scalp with a washcloth. If the child has hair, the AAD recommends using a baby shampoo once or twice a week. A washcloth can be used to wash the rest of the baby’s body, including between the child’s fingers and toes. Rinse off all soap after cleaning each area, and immediately wrap the baby in a warm towel once the bath is complete. A fragrance-free moisturizer can be applied to a baby’s skin if parents notice skin is dry after bath time. Bathing a newborn can inspire both nerves and awe. Parents can speak with their child’s physician for more tips on how to approach bath time. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

ŽQDQFLDO OLWHUDF\ NEW BOOK I AM MONEY TEACHES KIDS ABOUT MONEY BASICS WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY Money is a necessity that moves in and out of our lives in some form or amount every day. It is vital to supporting our basic needs and livelihoods. However, understanding the concepts of money isn’t always easy. With all the information and misinformation out there, learning about and teaching others how to earn, spend, save, as well as invest, make payments, and share or give money can be difficult. For some parents and educators, trying to teach children about money is not only challenging, but it adds extra work to their already busy schedules. While there are plenty of children’s books available, most of them typically focus on a singular money matter only like what it is, saving, investing, or earning. Until recently, there hasn’t been a children’s book written to help children learn about and understand the basic concepts of money. I Am Money is a newly published picture book that is changing how and what children learn about money. Written in partnership by author Julia Cook, and finance coach Garrett Gunderson, this engaging picture book adds a new and entertaining spin on teaching kids the basic concepts of money. As the main character of the book, Money teaches readers how to earn, spend, save, invest, and share money using plain language and fun examples that children can easily connect with and relate to. Dressed in a gold clip and glasses, Money tells the reader all about itself including what it is, why it’s needed, and how 14 CITY PARENT | January 2024

By the time the plane landed, Cook and Gunderson knew they wanted to collaborate on a picture book together and their journey to write I Am Money began. I Am Money is currently available in digital and hard copy form at Amazon, Indigo, Barnes & Noble, Google Play Books, and Kobo. The hard copy version is available in paperback and hardcover. Their joint adventure continues as Cook and Gunderson are working on developing a series of animations where their character Money will continue to teach kids about money basics in highly entertaining cartoon videos. to manage it. The delightfully charming character also discusses the different types and forms of currency as well as the importance of investing in yourself and sharing money with others. At the end of the book, there are 10 money tips that both children and adults will find beneficial. The colourful illustrations by Josh Cleland add to the book’s humour. Cleland is a world class illustrator who creates vibrant, high-quality illustrations for picture books, iOS apps, websites, album covers, magazines, billboards, animations, and other digital and hard copy media for clients all over the world. The two authors are respected experts in their fields. A former teacher and counselor, Cook is a celebrated,

award-winning children’s book author who has written 126 books to date. Her books have sold over three million copies and are available in nine different languages. Gunderson is a successful entrepreneur, finance coach, and best-selling author of several financial books. He also has several YouTube videos about money and regularly tours the United States to perform his one-man comedy show about money matters. Cook and Gunderson met by chance at an airport where they were both waiting to catch the same flight. To have a blog published on the site, students must submit their resume, a sample of their writing to the foundation, and go through a phone interview process first. Blog posts cover a variety of topics that range from entertaining and lighthearted, like movie and book reviews, to more serious topics including immigrating to Canada, diet and nutrition, and gender identity. The Express, Inspire, Connect Youth Conference is an annual virtual conference that’s coordinated, organized, and led by students. This half-day conference gives participants in grades eight to 12 a chance to connect with their peers, engage in meaningful discussions, brainstorm ideas, network with industry experts, and gain invaluable knowledge. FINAL ZOOM: VIRTUAL MEDICAL – PHYSIOS AND CHIRO WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM Since those early days of COVID-19, it is not uncommon now for Canadians to seek out their medical care virtually instead of having to schedule a personal visit. Initially, patients didn’t quite understand how it would work or the value. The biggest hurdle was the use of technology. At Toronto’s Cleveland Clinic midtown location, sports chiropractor Dr. Cameron Borody still laughs at some early virtual encounters. “We used to spend a lot of time educating patients on the do’s and don’ts of the virtual experience, such as being appropriately dressed in shorts etc., and to get out from behind their desk to perform movements to help us diagnose them.” Now, virtual care, whether it’s a phone consultation, a video link, or a combination of both, is becoming the norm for patients requiring other medical services like physiotherapy or chiropractic care. Now without leaving their house or place of employment, patients can still have useful one-on-one sessions with their chiropractors or physiotherapists. People have found the virtual approach a great alternative if you can’t get to the clinic for a hands-on lesson. Traditionally as practitioners, Borody says they’re thought to provide a lot of hands-on treatments like ultrasound, electrostimulation, adjustments, manual therapy, and other physical interventions, which of course, are difficult to do virtually. “However, a lot of our treatment also focuses on exercise prescription, education, and ergonomic advice, which puts the onus back on the 20 CITY PARENT | January 2024

patients to heal themselves, but we will coach them through it. While there is always a place for handson treatment, in some cases, the education component and the exercise prescription are perfectly suited towards virtual appointments.” Borody has seen a shift as more and more patients have embraced virtual options. For example, he conducts an exercise class twice a week for patients with osteoarthritis

of their hips and/or knees entirely online. Patients are in the comfort and convenience of their environments while performing supervised rehabilitation in a small group setting. Borody believes it’s here to stay in some form. “Virtual care is not the predominant element of my practice anymore, but it currently makes up 10-15 per cent of my weekly patient contact. I anticipate that to continue well into the future.” What if you’re new to the virtual experience? How should you embrace it? Consider an initial assessment in person and follow-ups online. “It can be difficult developing that same rapport online that you would get in person,” suggests Borody. “So maybe the first

step is developing that initial trust. Once you’ve built that connection, it will be easier to work virtually.” my.clevelandclinic.org/canada

PREEMIE & PETIT LEM WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM A typical pregnancy lasts around 40 weeks, but when the delivery happens before 37 weeks, it’s known as a preterm birth, and the baby is called a preemie. Did you know approximately 30,000 babies are born prematurely every year in Canada? According to the Canadian Institute of Health 22 CITY PARENT | January 2024

Research, “Preterm birth accounts for nearly two-thirds of infant deaths in Canada and is associated with increased morbidity throughout the life course and subsequent adultonset chronic disease. In addition to these health effects, preterm birth has social and financial impacts on the affected individuals and their families.”

It’s not surprising parents of preemies are at a higher risk of experiencing postpartum depression, anxiety, and PTSD. With the help of the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation (CPBF), this parent-led charitable organization provides education, advocacy, and support for families

dealing with premature birth both in and outside of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With emotional swings of helplessness and fear, it’s important parents of preemies understand that they’re not alone. CPBF offers peer and professional support to ensure parents gain confidence and feel prepared to care cityparent.com

for their babies in the NICU and at home. That’s why the recent collaboration of Petit Lem, a sleepwear brand based in Montreal, with the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation, is important to families of premature babies. Having clothing specifically designed for premature babies is crucial for their health and comfort, but it’s often overlooked how

important it is for parents as well. Petit Lem’s collaboration with the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation not only provides highquality sleepwear for preemies, but also offers peace of mind and comfort for their families during a difficult time. Petit Lem donated 500 packages of essential items to CPBF to support premature babies across Canada. In a nod to the Nov. 17th World Prematurity Day, CPBF distributed these special packages to five major hospitals in Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Toronto. Petit Lem’s Preemie Layette collection features specially designed pieces to cater to the unique needs of NICU babies, such as front buttons for easy adjustments during wire repositioning and diaper changes. These pieces were created with the help of NICU nurses to ensure functionality and comfort during those first few days for preemie babies. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Petit Lem in creating gift packages for families in the NICUs across

Canada. Having a baby in the NICU is a traumatic experience, and these gift packages offer a moment of comfort, assuring them they are not alone on this journey,” said Fabiana Bacchini, Executive Director at the CPBF. For families in the NICU, the first outfit is very important – as it shows that the baby is ready to leave the incubator to go to an open crib. Petit Lem and the CPBF offer comfort and assurance to parents during difficult times by providing these essential packages to families with premature babies. For more information, please visit canadianpreemies.org or petitlem. com. Petit Lem’s Layette collection with preemie pieces is available at petitlem.com and in Hudson’s Bay and Clement stores.

COOKSMART Feeding your child is a big responsibility – teaching your child to feed themselves as they become independent is just as important. For parents who don’t have the time, skills, or patience to teach their children how to cook, relax – we’re here to help. COOKSMART was developed by a parent, Kathy Stewart, who as a nutritionist, understood that the best solution to creating long-term health starts by making smart food choices from an early age, especially with more exposure to vegetables and fruits. As a teacher, she recognized that building kitchen confidence by engaging children at their level to learn cooking skills was the smartest way to help our children become healthy adults. Our structured program helps children learn cooking and baking basics to create snacks and meals they will be able to replicate at home for themselves throughout their life. Join us for our online Holiday Baking and Gift making workshops or give your child the opportunity to really learn some hands-on skills at our in-person day camp programs! cooksmart.ca
