your creative side and share a personal gift: a knitted toque, a sketch of your friend’s home decked out for the holidays or a tin filled with your signature baked goods.

repurpose with purpose

When we think of re-gifting, it’s usually in a negative context: Someone gave you something you didn’t really want, so you pass it along to someone else on your list. But regifting can be positive if you do it for the right reasons. Some options include sharing jewelry you no longer wear,

offering up your favourite board game or deck of cards for a game night with friends or giving a nice bottle of wine to someone who will appreciate the gesture.

charitable donations

Many of us feel more generous over the holidays. And for the friend or loved one who truly has it all, what better gift could there be than to share the wealth with

those who need it most? Organizations like Canadian Feed The Children have gift catalogues that make it easy to choose items that will provide food, opportunities to generate income or education support for families in need around the world and even here in Canada. For many items, donations are matched one-for-one. You can find the organization’s gift-giving catalogue at bestgiftever.ca. ■ — News Canada

erfect for barbecue season, this meal is a great low-work recipe that can be made while basking in the nice weather

or spending time with family or friends. By combining both mushrooms and turkey smothered in a delicious

peanut sauce, this recipe from Family Feedbag creates a flavourful dish that everyone is sure to love. ■ — News Canada

• Juice of two limes • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1 lb button crimini mushrooms • 1 ½ lbs turkey breast, cut into 1-inch pieces

Directions: 1. Make the sauce by combining peanut butter, soy sauce, apple juice, lime juice and garlic in a medium mixing bowl. Stir well and set aside. 2. If you have children, a classic armoire or built-in storage wall works well to hide toys and clutter when guests come over. A sectional sofa is the latest trend that’s chic but also very comfortable with more seating options, making it perfect for large families and gatherings.”

If you can divide your space and create either a cozy nook for read-

ing, using a laptop, or a play area, the whole family can spend time together in one space, while doing the things

they love to do. Centering the furniture in the room and keeping it away from the edges creates a more intimate feeling in the space, while also allowing you to use the back of the couch as a room divider. A neat decorating trick for parents with little kids is to incorporate a bold focal point such as a large, colourful piece of art to help draw guests’ attention away from those places you don’t want them to notice. ■ — News Canada

TIPS

tips to help you

tackle your

debt

T

he pandemic has taught us that life can be unpredictable. Economic uncertainty about the future means it’s more important than ever to have the right tools to respond and adapt to changes in your financial situation, while still taking steps to manage your finances and debt. Having a budget is key to feeling in control of your money. A budget helps you know how much money is coming in, going out and being saved. Budgeting helps balance your income and expenses, so you get a clear idea of what you can afford. Before you start, it’s important that you take some time to identify your needs and wants. These can differ greatly from one person to another. Next, create your budget. Use the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s free online budget planner to help you figure out your priorities and where to cut expenses. It’s also great for comparing your budget against Canadians in similar life situations. To make it easier to pay back your debt, it’s always a good idea to have a realistic plan. Here are steps to get you started:

identify what you owe

Make a list and for each debt, list the total amount you owe, your minimum monthly payment and the interest rate.

decide on a strategy

Create your plan – choose a timeframe that’s reasonable and affordable. Decide which debts to pay off first, depending on the type and considering things like interest rates. Work directly with your bank and creditors to discuss your financial situation.

consolidate your debts

You may consider applying for a loan or line of credit to pay off multiple debts with high interest rates. Consolidating your debts means you’ll only have to make one monthly payment rather than paying each one individually, and the interest rate could potentially be lower. Contact a financial institution to discuss whether this is an option. Managing money and debt in uncertain times isn’t always easy, but there are resources to help you. THE VIEW

...we often set overly ambitious targets. Once we start to fall behind on our goals, we eventually give up in frustration ease into exercise

Most of us would benefit from some more physical activity. But joining a gym or signing up for classes can feel daunting. Instead, start small. Find a friend who you can go on a brisk walk with two or three times a week. If you’re back in the office, consider riding your bike to work once a week. Get off the bus or subway a couple stops early and walk the rest of the way. And use the stairs a couple of times a week instead of taking the elevator.

master home cooking

F

or many of us, it’s an annual tradition: come up with New Year’s resolutions so we can be our best selves, diligently follow the plan for a few days or weeks, and then ditch the resolutions and go back to our usual habits. Part of the problem is that we often set overly ambitious targets. Once we start to fall behind on our goals, we eventually give up in frustration. This year, set some goals you can actually achieve.

We’ve all felt the pinch of inflation. One way to save money on meals is to skip restaurant and takeout meals and prepare your food at home. Cooking at home also gives you control over how much sugar, salt and fat you consume. If you’re the kind of person who eats out for almost every meal, set a goal of making at least one dinner at home a week - and make extra so you can have leftovers or freeze it for another day. If you already cook at home regularly, encourage your children to join in and learn a valuable life skill. Inspire variety by challenging yourself to try one new recipe every week.

get to bed earlier

Regular, restful sleep boosts your mood, health and cognitive functioning. Try to have your head hit the

pillow 30 minutes to an hour earlier than you’re used to. Start by avoiding caffeinated drinks and vigorous activities late in the day. To help you fall asleep earlier, put away your phone and laptop and turn off the TV at least an hour before you plan to go to bed. Instead, dim the lights in your room, and maybe curl up with a book.

protect your digital self

Make this the year you protect yourself from cybercrime. Don’t reuse a password for multiple purposes or accounts. If you’re worried about remembering all your passwords, consider using a password manager. With this tool, you only have to remember one password to access all your accounts. For a higher level of security, consider using passphrases instead of passwords. Passphrases are a series of four or more random words that are easy for you to remember, but almost impossible for cybercriminals to guess, such as BathroomLampClosetMug. Also set up a schedule to make sure all your devices and software are updated. Better yet, enable automatic updates whenever possible. Make a habit of clearing your cache and browser history after browsing online, and always log out of your accounts. Find more cybersecurity tips at getcybersafe.ca. ■ — News Canada

HOME

22

decluttering for the New Year

T

he new year is the perfect opportunity to reset and refresh your home. For many of us, this kind of cleansing is a must-do before the ball drops. Not only is maintaining a clean home a great habit to bring with you into 2023, but it’s also a fantastic way to kickstart any other resolution you may have. Who doesn’t feel more productive in a fresh, clean home? Below are some tips to get you started.

set your intentions

What are you hoping to achieve by de-cluttering your home? Are you looking to make more room

4Rent.ca

in your closet for new clothes? Do you want to make it easier to find things? Having a specific goal in mind will help motivate you to get the job done.

take inventory of your tools

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to keep a tidier home, think about how you’ll do it. Do you have all the tools you’ll need to do this? Do you have enough sponges? Do you need more cleaning solution? Is it time to upgrade your vacuum? If you are in the market for a new one, a vacuum with a telescopic wand and

December 22, 2023–January 5, 2024

two quick-release batteries, such as the LG CordZero, can be especially helpful to reach into nooks and crannies without interruption.

pick a date

Even the most organized among us are prone to procrastinating when it comes to cleaning. Take a look at your schedule, choose a date that you know you’ll be able to stick to and mark it down in your calendar. Consider asking a friend or partner to help keep you accountable. MOVERS

avoid common

packing mistakes BY CHUCK RESNICK

M

ore than four million people moved residences in Canada last year, many of whom did the packing themselves. For some, it works out fine; others have problems resulting from a lack of foresight, poorly packed boxes and inexperience in loading moving trucks. Here are a few tips to help you avoid finding damaged items at your destination:

purchase boxes from your mover

The most common packing mistake we see are people getting free boxes at the grocery or liquor store and then putting too much weight in them. For example, using a large box to pack books and magazines may make it too heavy to lift, and the box might break during the move due to the weight. Use this rule of thumb: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Be choosy about your boxes; free boxes from a grocery store that have been used to ship produce could contain insect larvae that may transfer to your belongings.

be realistic about how many boxes you need

Depending on how long you have lived in your current location, you

4Rent.ca

will most likely underestimate your boxes requirement. Often, we hear of renters who think 40 or 50 boxes will be enough, and then realize they need upwards of 80 boxes, two days before moving day.

moving day, we can’t create that box wall early on and, this decreases the capacity of the items that can be moved at one time. It also eats up precious time, and therefore, money.

the show stopper dessert

of the holiday season T

his classic dessert is sure to be a conversation piece in your holiday dinner. The sugared cranberries are a pretty garnish and take this cake to the next level. “A classic Bûche de Noël, or French yule log cake, is one of the most impressive holiday desserts you can make,” says Michelle Pennock,

executive chef for President’s Choice test kitchen. “The key to rolling the sponge cake without having it crack is to keep it moist, so be sure to cover it with a damp towel as directed once it comes out of the oven and use the towel to guide the cake as you roll it. Don’t be concerned if the cake cracks a little –

you can cover it up with the hazelnut frosting.” Use jelly roll pans, which are smaller and taller versions of baking sheets and are perfect for making both rolled and slab cakes, as well as roasting smaller batches of vegetables and nuts. ■ — News Canada

Chocolate Hazelnut Bûche de Noël Prep time: 50 minutes

Total time: 10 minutes

Ingredients: • 1 ¼ cup (300 mL) chopped 70% cocoa solids dark chocolate • 5 large eggs, yolks and whites separated

Serves: 14

• ½ cup (125 mL) granulated sugar • ½ tsp (2 mL) salt • 1 tbsp (15 mL) cocoa powder • 1 jar (375 g) crunchy hazelnut spread, divided

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line 15 x 10-inch (38 x 25 cm) metal jelly roll pan with parchment paper; mist with cooking spray. Set aside. 2. Place chocolate in microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 20 seconds, then stir and repeat until melted; 1 to 1 ½ minutes total. Stir until smooth. Let cool slightly. 3. Beat together egg yolks, sugar and salt in large bowl using electric hand mixer until pale yellow. Beat in melted chocolate until smooth. Set aside. 4. Beat egg whites in separate large bowl using electric hand mixer until soft peaks form. Fold a quarter of egg whites into chocolate mixture using rubber spatula; fold in remaining egg whites. Transfer to prepared pan, spreading evenly and smoothing top. 5. Bake until cake springs back when lightly touched in centre; about 10 minutes. Run paring knife around edges of cake to loosen. Cover cake with clean damp kitchen towel; let cool completely. 6. Arrange same damp towel on work surface with long side facing you; dust with cocoa powder. Carefully invert cake onto towel with long side facing you; remove pan and gently peel off parchment. Trim edges of cake. Set aside.

• 2 cups (500 mL) mascarpone cheese, drained and at room temperature • Sugared cranberries (optional) • Fresh mint (optional)

7. Stir ½ cup hazelnut spread with mascarpone in separate large bowl until well combined. Spread over surface of cake. Beginning at long side closest to you and lifting and guiding cake with towel, roll up cake lengthwise. Arrange, seam-side down, on work surface. 8. Diagonally slice 5-inch (13 cm) long piece off one end of cake. Arrange longer piece of cake on serving platter; place cut end of short piece adjacent to long piece to make a “Y” shape. Spread remaining hazelnut spread all over cake. Refrigerate uncovered until hazelnut spread is set; about 1 hour or up to 24 hours. 9 Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. If using, top with sugared cranberries and mint. Chef’s tip: To make sugared cranberries, bring ½ cup each granulated sugar and water to a boil in small saucepan; cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Add 1 cup frozen cranberries; simmer 1 minute. Pour cranberries and liquid into bowl or liquid measure; refrigerate 1 hour. Strain cranberries; transfer to small baking dish or rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle with ½ cup granulated sugar; toss to coat. Spread in single layer; let stand uncovered at room temperature for three hours or up to 24 hours.

4 sustainable swaps for your weekly grocery shopping

L

imiting climate change is a global effort that requires many actions, large and small. Making sustainable food choices when shopping, cooking and eating is more important than ever, and more and more Canadians are looking for sustainable food choices. Here are some tips to get started:

shop seasonal produce

There’s a reason why we hear about products like “winter squash.” Buying seasonal produce is a simple way to know your food is being grown and sold in an environmentally friendly way. Buying seasonal items helps reduce carbon emissions produced from transporting food long distances, supports local farmers and ensures

you enjoy fresher food. What’s not to love?

many of their products so you can shop sustainably.

prevent food waste

look for a carbon-zero logo

Weekly meal prepping is a good practice that will guarantee you only buy what you need and use up all the ingredients in your fridge. This simple habit goes a long way to ensuring the food you purchase and prepare can be thoroughly enjoyed and doesn’t end up in the trash. If you happen to buy extra, freeze what you don’t use and save and use your leftovers. Buy foods in recyclable packaging. Read food labels for ingredients and nutrition, but also for their recyclability. Think protein packaging can’t be recycled? Think again – companies like Maple Leaf Foods have introduced recyclable packaging for

Eighty-four percent of Canadians would like to know if the foods they purchase are produced in an environmentally friendly way, but 68 per cent find it difficult to identify sustainably made food products. To simplify shopping, Maple Leaf Foods has introduced a new carbon-zero logo on the packaging of many of their brands to make shopping sustainably easier than ever. “We hope consumers will appreciate our products for their sustainability in addition to their great taste, safety and nutrition,” says Dr. Randy Huffman, the company’s Chief Food Safety and Sustainability Officer. ■ — News Canada
