4 key ways to take control of your savings

Saving money is a critical financial practice that nearly everyone strives to accomplish. Yet it is often easier in theory than reality. If you are anxious or concerned about your financial situation and your ability to save, know you’re not alone.

More than one-third of Canadians feel anxious about their current financial situation. Further, many households across the country do not feel in control of their finances, with 13 per cent reporting they’ve “forfeited contributions to their retirement accounts,” potentially impacting themselves later in life. These figures from the World Financial Group paint a concerning picture of how people across the country feel about their current and future finances.

Consider these savings tips.

create a budget

Every budget begins with your net income. Ensure you subtract deductions like taxes and work-

place benefits, such as insurance or retirement plan contributions. This way, you know exactly how much money is available each month. Next, calculate all fixed expenses, including regular monthly payments or bills. These include utilities, cellphone bills, rent or mortgage, vehicle payments and anything that remains static monthto-month. Subtract those fixed expenses from your net income to create your monthly budget.

track your expenses

Once your budget is in place, it’s much easier to keep track of expenses that vary month-to-month like gas, groceries and entertainment costs such as dining out, seeing a movie or going to a sporting event. Tracking minor expenses may seem tedious initially, but logging each purchase can help set a foundation for financial accountability.

set savings goals

Tracking your expenses for a few months should give you a good

idea of how realistic it is to save a set amount of money each month. Before you set a goal, or if you’re struggling to consistently reach savings goals, take a financial literacy quiz to test your knowledge then consider meeting with a financial services professional.

pay down debts

Debt is one of the largest barricades people face when trying to save more money. If you feel debts are stopping you from reaching your financial goals, know it is possible to pay off debt while saving at the same time. Make sure to prioritize debts with higher interest rates that lead to compounding costs in the future, and then, if possible, make more than the minimum payment to pay them off faster. It may limit you in the short-term but can equate to more financial freedom – and the ability to save more – in the future.

top tips to improve your health

This is a time when many of us start to think about our goals for the coming year. For some, taking care of our health is a key priority. Building in healthy habits where possible is important to our health. Here are

four ways you can get healthier this year.

eat well

It’s not easy to change a habit. Eating habits are no exception. There are many different factors that make

changing your eating habits difficult. But over time and with small steps you can be well on your way. You can make healthy eating habits easier to maintain over the long term by finding options that fit your daily routine. Eating a variety of

vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods, and protein foods as well as making water your drink of choice can help you maintain your overall health. Remember that everyone’s health goals and individual needs differ. It is important to find healthy food choices and habits that are right for you.

reduce sedentary time

The Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines have been developed for

all age groups to provide Canadians with guidance about how much physical activity, sedentary time and sleep is needed in a 24-hour day. Some physical activity is better than none, and getting started is easier than you think. Making choices like walking to the store instead of driving or taking the stairs instead of the elevator all contribute towards a healthy 24 hours. Try to limit sedentary time to eight hours or less and break up long periods of sitting where possible. Getting enough good quality sleep can benefit from consistent bed and wakeup times.

book a checkup

To quote an old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Regular oral and medical check-ups are an important part of your overall health and can uncover potential issues before they become major issues. As we age, there are certain tests we should take, including mammograms and colonosco-

pies. Be sure to talk to your doctor about the right timing for these check-ups based on your individual health needs.

quit smoking

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your overall health, and you’ll start noticing positive impacts almost immediately. Start by creating a quit plan that includes the reasons you want to quit and lists the tools and coping mechanisms you will use to manage cravings. Next, be aware of the things that might trigger a craving, and consider using quit aids, such as nicotine gum or patches, to get through them. Finally, reach out for support when needed. Free quit-smoking support services are available across the country. You can chat with a quit coach by phone, online or text.

3 tips for protecting your skin this winter

As we move into winter, we won’t just experience snow, ice and cold temperatures.

As we move into winter, we won’t just experience snow, ice and cold temperatures. We also have to deal with drier winter air, which can negatively impact our skin. Dr. Joseph Lam shares three ways to protect your skin this season.

don’t pack away the sunscreen

While we tend to think of sunscreen as an essential item for the hot sunny days of summer, it’s also important to protect your skin from sunburn and sun damage during time spent outside in winter. “Winter sun is still strong enough to burn your skin,” says Dr. Lam. “If you’re planning an outdoor adventure, be sure sunscreen is on your packing list.”

increase the moisturizer

“For most people, regularly applying a moisturizer will help pre-

vent the dry, itchy skin that comes with the cold weather and indoor heating. But if you have a skin condition, such as eczema, you might need to use your moisturizer more often,” says Dr. Lam. He also shares some practical advice, “Before applying any new skincare product, test the product in one small area of your skin before applying to larger areas of the skin.”

protect your skin

Remember to dress for the weather and protect your skin. Dr. Lam shares, “Cold winter temperatures, especially in parts of Canada with frigid winters, can seriously damage the skin, such as from frostbite. Covering your head and hands and wearing appropriate footwear can be more comfortable and protect Canadians of all ages from the harsh climate.”

10 THINGS your mover will not do

When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.

1

move containers of fuel or hazardous materials

Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.

move live plants

2

Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our ex -

perience, most customers move plants themselves.

move items larger than we have the ability to do

When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.

move personal valuables

It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.

Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.

provide insurance coverage for all items

Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.

rearrange your furniture

Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.

install major appliances

We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.

stop the clock because of a change on your end

We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something

unexpected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.

load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod

We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination.

All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job!

Ring in the New Year in style with these

hosting hacks

If you’re hosting a New Year’s party, you’ll want to make sure it’s a memorable one for your guests – and yourself. Here are some tips on hosting a bash that will set the stage for a fabulous 2025.

establish a dress code

While you may not want to go fully black-tie formal, sweatpants and hoodies don’t exactly set the party mood. Figure out the right balance and let your guests know how to dress ahead of time.

party like it’s 2025

Your guests are going to want to share the pictures from your big soiree. Make it easy by printing out a guest password so they can easily access your Wi-Fi. You can also put out extra chargers for guests to top up their phones. If you have a printer like the HP Envy 6100 se-

ries, guests can send photos directly from their phones to print onsite as an added takeaway.

plan activities

Party games are great icebreakers to help strangers get to know each other. Classics like charades, 20 Questions or “two truths and a lie” will get the party started.

Another option, particularly for family gatherings, is to have some age-appropriate activity sheets. HP Printables, for example, feature a variety of seasonal colouring sheets, puzzles or games for guests of all ages that are free and easy to print at home.

eat, drink and be merry

For a small group, you might want to organize a sit-down dinner. But for a larger gathering, finger foods are best. To make it easier and

cost-effective, consider asking your guests to bring a potluck item. For drinks, make sure you have ice, mix for cocktails and some nonalcoholic drink options available.

set up your countdown

You don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute trying to figure out how your guests will count down the end of the year. Will you watch one of the televised ball drops? Or will you just gather together and count down the year as a group? Whatever your plan, set a timer to remind you to start getting organized about 30 minutes before midnight.

Note that for younger children, there are online countdowns you can use so they can celebrate the New Year without having to stay up to midnight. ■
