in a tech-driven world It is impossible to dispute the many ways technology has positively affected the world. Tech has made interacting and collaborating with people from all corners of the planet as convenient as conversing with a next door neighbor.

echnology also has changed the face of education, making it possible for students from all walks of life to easily access a wealth of information at the click of a button. For all of its many attributes, technology has its drawbacks as well. One of the notable detriments is the “always on” reality of tech, as well as the ability to become addicted to such instant gratification. Few adults and children can spend more than a few minutes without checking their devices. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, on average people are online 24 hours a week, twice as long as 10 years ago. One in five adults

spends as much as 40 hours a week online. According to Common Sense Media, teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to about six hours for kids between the ages of eight and 12 and 50 minutes for children eight years old and younger. Technology also has blurred the lines that distinguish work and personal time. Gone are the days of leaving the office behind when the workday ends in early evening. Today’s workers can take work home, work remotely and even check work emails or put in some hours while on vacation. Children, too, can pay a price as a result of engaging with technology. For example, various
studies indicate more than half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online. These tips may help adults and children regain control and find balance in a tech-driven world. •S et strict usage times. er devices can be beneficial to the mind and body. •F ind alternative solutions. Rather than running an internet search every time you have a question, look up answers in a book, travel to learn about new things, experience new hobbies, and immerse yourself in the physical world with renewed vigor. he COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work, shop and even the way we eat. More than ever, we are looking for easy and affordable recipes to cook from home. We spoke with Jerry Dzikowski, Director Category Management Grocery, who recommends trying the following crowd-pleasing potato soup. Its ingredients are easy to find, have a long-lasting shelf life and provide a delicious, hearty, warm meal ready to feed the whole family. Hearty Potato Soup Prep time: 30 minutes Total time: 30 min Serves: 4 Ingredients: • 6 cups peeled and diced potatoes (about 5 medium potatoes, cubed to about 3/4 inch) • 1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onion (1 medium) • 1 1/4 cups peeled and diced carrots (3 medium) • 1 cup diced celery (2-3 stalks) • 1 tsp dried tarragon • 14.5 oz. low-sodium chicken broth
• 1/3 cup butter • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour • 2 1/2 cups 2% milk • 1/2 cup sour cream • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Optional: 1/2 cup cheddar cheese and ½ cup bacon or ham (extra to garnish), for a savoury twist Optional garnishes: Cheddar cheese, bacon or ham, and slivered green onion
Directions: 1. Combine potatoes, carrots, celery, onions and tarragon with chicken broth in a large pot and season with salt and pepper. 2. Cover pot and bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and continue to cook about 15 to 20 minutes longer until potatoes are very soft. 3. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan melt butter, add flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes while whisking. Stir in milk, then cook and stir until mixture begins to lightly bubble and thicken. 4. Once potatoes are soft, add thickened milk mixture to potato soup mixture and stir. Add sour cream and mix well. Stir in cheddar cheese and bacon or ham until mixed in. 5. Top as desired.
