plies to saving accounts and plans, but you get the interest. The amount you save grows. Let’s say you put your money into a savings account or plan where you get 5 per cent interest. For every $100 you save in a year, you’ll get an extra $5.

The Canadian government has set up special savings plans to help your money grow more quickly. Depending on your goals and life stage, a Registered Education Savings Plan, Tax-Free Savings Account or Registered Retirement Savings Plan might work for you. Although they’re made of plastic, bulky items like tables, chairs and toys don’t belong in the recycling bin. Most communities have specialized depots that collect these items. If your community doesn’t offer this service and the item is in good condition, clean it thoroughly and donate it to a local not-for-profit or a friend.

Although batteries don’t belong in your municipal recycling bin, they can and should be recycled. Many batteries contain materials that can be harmful to the environment and wildlife if they end up in landfill, and the salvaged materials from old batteries can be used to manufacture new products like bikes, stainless steel water bottles and small appliances. Check with your municipal recycling depot or local paint store for information on how to dispose of your old paint.
