5 tips for creating a healthy sleep routine
E
ven though the week can feel like an endless stream of preparations, there's one prep time most of us are missing – sleep prep. Research shows that 67% of Canadians wish they could get a better sleep, but they can't seem to figure out how. Experts recommend adding a wind-down routine to your schedule to help your brain adjust to sleep mode. Tonight, forget counting sheep and try these five helpful tips for a healthy bedtime routine to get those much-needed z's. 1. Lay out your pjs: Laying out your pyjamas and even your clothes for the next day before you head off to brush your teeth and wash your face plants a seed in your brain that
it will soon be time to shut down and recharge. 2. Power down technology: It's all too common – we get in bed and take that one last scroll through Facebook and Instagram, check out one more email. Although you may think this is relaxing, a lit screen from a phone, tablet, computer or television can serve as a brain stimulant, waking you up instead of helping you decompress. 3. Avoid evening stimulants: Although everyone responds to stimulants differently, the average person should stop consuming caffeinated products six hours before bed. If you're having trouble getting to sleep at night, consider drinking less coffee or tea in the late afternoon and eve-
ning. Also, try to schedule any vigorous workouts earlier in the day. 4. Create a consistent bed time: Having a consistent bedtime and wake-up time is important when trying to get a good night's sleep. Your body will start to adjust to these set times, making it easier to fall asleep at night and easier to get out of bed in the mornings. 5. Try a natural sleep aid: Sometimes we just can't quite get our bodies to power down. A natural sleepaid that has key ingredients like melatonin, GABA and 5- HTP can help you to fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up feeing refreshed. Always speak to your doctor before starting a new health care regimen. ■ — News Canada

12 steps to
financial organization set up 1. Gather all your paperwork. Create a file folder for each of the following: • Chequing accounts • Savings accounts • Retirement accounts • Investment accounts • Credit card accounts • Loans • Personal lines of credit • Mortgage • Insurance: life, disability, health, critical illness, home, car • Tax returns • Estate: wills and powers of attorney 2. Welcome to 21st century banking If you don’t already have it, set up telephone or internet banking for your accounts. 3. Reduce fees by setting up a buffer If you can afford it, transfer $1,000 float to your chequing account (pre-
tend it isn’t there) and use that to minimize your banking costs. 4. Save automatically Create an auto-debit from your chequing account to a savings account that will not be touched. Most people won’t put money into a savings account on a regular basis, opting to wait for a tax-refund or bonus before setting aside some money for the future. Establish an automatic savings deposit every month and your nest egg will accumulate faster than you think. 5. Create a monthly bill summary List your bills in the date order they need to be paid to prevent you from missing a bill. If you have bills that are paid automatically from your account, write an “A” beside these bills and remember to deduct them from your spending journal at bill payment time each month. 6. Set up your “in-baskets” Create an in-basket containing two folders for your bills. Label the first
folder “1-15” and the other “16-31.” When a bill comes in, look at the due date and file the bill in the appropriate folder. Recycle all the marketing materials in the envelope. Create a second in-basket with three folders labelled “bank statements,” “bills paid” and “tax receipts.”
weekly 7. Make a date with your money On the 12th and 28th of each month, set aside the time in your schedule — you’ll need about 30 minutes — to pay your bills. Always pay your bills in one place that is equipped with your bill paying system, spending journal, envelopes, stamps, pens, pencils, a calculator, tape, a stapler and return address labels and recycling bin. When you pay a bill, write the cheque or transaction number, amount paid, and the date you paid it on the bill. Put the paid bill in your “bills paid” file. Deduct the amount

clearing the bank can lull you into thinking you have more money than you do. Go back at least a month to make sure all previous cheques have cleared. Talk about anything unusual.
quarterly 9. File Once a quarter, file all your paperwork to keep your system current. 10. Talk Have dinner with your business partner and talk about the bumps, your goals and how you’re doing.
Annually
you’ve spent from your spending journal. If a bill has not been paid in full (tax bills are paid over several months, for example) put it back in your bills folder so you don’t forget it.
monthly 8. Reconcile your bank statements When your bank statements come in, put them in your in-box folder.
Make a date when all your statements are in (it’ll depend on when you receive them) to: Review your statements to make sure there are no mistakes. Reconcile your spending register; clearly mark the cheques that have been returned to you and highlight the ones in your spending register that haven’t yet cleared the bank. A cheque that is taking a long time
11. Re-vamp your budget Review your budget using last year’s credit card statements and bank statements to see what you actually spent. If you spent more on a particular category, make sure you know why, or look for ways to cut back. 12. Clean up Go through your files at the end of each year and throw out bills and receipts no longer needed for auditing/ budgeting purposes. ■

stain removal 101
he basics of laundry seem straightforward, but sometimes it feels like stain removal requires an advanced degree. To help simplify removal, check out these easy tips for five of the most common (and frustrating) stains:
oil and grease Start by covering the stain in baby powder or cornstarch as quickly as possible – the powder will soak up much of the grease or oil. After about 30 minutes, dust off any excess powder and give the garment a wash on the hottest water-setting possible for the fabric.
lipstick
sauces
Kiss away lipstick stains by pretreating with a solvent-based stain removal product (or a bit of liquid detergent). Allow the stain remover to work for at least 15 minutes and then wash the garment in the hottest water possible for the fabric – be sure to read the care label.
Can’t eat pasta without spilling tomato sauce on your top? Simply apply dish detergent to the stain and rub with an ice cube. Once the stain has faded, blot it with a clean cloth soaked with vinegar and wash as usual.
red wine With a wine stain, it’s all about the dab - rubbing the stain can set it further. Dabbing complete, apply salt liberally to the stained area, let it dry and then wash with cold water and a mix of detergent and baking soda.
grass Much like dye stains, grass stains contain a pigment that sticks to clothing fibres. The secret is to act fast, soaking the stain in cold water as soon as possible. Once the garment is really soaked with water, use a cleaning agent like white vinegar, rubbing alcohol or even bleach (if you’re dealing with whites) to treat the stain. ■ — News Canada

INFO YOU CAN USE
simplify your cleaning products Limit spring cleaning products to a quality window/glass cleaner, allpurpose cleaner, tile/grout cleaner and a toilet bowl cleaner.
the Molly Maid system Clean each room from the top to bottom starting on the left and moving right. This really is the quickest and most efficient way to thoroughly spring clean your home.
dust first, vacuum second Any bits of dust or dirt that fall to the floor as you’re dusting will be picked up by the vacuum cleaner.
the best dust cloth: a damp, clean microfiber cloth Hold the cloth by a corner and lightly mist with clean water from a spray bottle. The cloth should be just damp enough to pick up dust without leaving moisture streaks on the furniture surface.
pet hair Remove it from upholstery with a damp microfibre cloth or rubber glove.
damp mop First sweep or vacuum floors to collect crumbs and dirt. Then start washing the floor in the farthest corner of the room and work your way towards the door. Use a damp cloth on the end of a mop handle to reach the narrow space between appliances.
microwave spatters
Fill a cup with water and microwave on high for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food so you can easily wipe it clean. Before wiping the microwave, remember to be extra careful when removing the cup of water as it will be hot.
dish cloths and sponges These are germ incubators, if you don’t clean them you’re just spreading the bacteria around. Wash dish cloths regularly, and microwave damp sponges on high for several minutes to kill bacteria. Even better, toss the sponge and stick to microfibre cloths, which dry quickly when hung up and help prevent the spread of germs.
the toothbrush Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas in the bathroom and kitchen (for example, around the soap holder, taps and drain).
streaks on the balcony door Streaks are tricky to eliminate. When spring cleaning, wipe the interior side of the glass horizontally and the exterior side vertically. This way, it will be easy to deter-
mine if the streaks are on the inside or outside.
clean your laundry routine You fill your laundry basket with dirty clothes. You take it to the laundry room and setting it on the floor. Then you repack it with clean clothes an hour later. Give your laundry basket, hamper and detergent/bleach/ softener caddy a good cleanse. Now, add anti-bacterial wipes to your laundry kit so that you can wipe out the inside of the basket before refilling it with clean clothes each time.
de-scale the kettle. Fill the kettle half-and-half with white vinegar and water and leave it to soak overnight. Using an old toothbrush, dislodge any stubborn bits of lime scale. Rinse out thoroughly a couple of times and then boil some water to eliminate any odour of vinegar.■

10 THINGS
BY CHUCK RESNICK
your move wil not do
When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.
1
move containers of fuel or hazardous materials
experience, most customers move plants themselves.
Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.
move items larger than we have the ability to do
Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.
3 2 6
move live plants
Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our

When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.
move personal valuables
4
It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.
provide insurance coverage for all items Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.
27
7 8 10 9 rearrange your furniture
Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.
install major appliances

We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination. 4 tips to
transform your leftovers
C
anadians throw away $31 billion worth of food every year, but more than 60 per cent of household food waste is avoidable. Here are some tips to help reinvent leftovers to create new dishes.
don’t leave your bread for dead If you have bread that’s drying out, a simple way to give it new life and use it up is to make homemade croutons. Another great option is to make your own breadcrumbs to use as a crispy topping or binder for meat-
balls and burgers. For a sweet option, try using stale bread for bread puddings and French toasts – it will soak up all the flavour without turning to mush.
veg it out If you’re one of the many parents who struggle to get the kids to eat vegetables, try blending cooked vegetables to a pulp and adding it to a pasta sauce. The little ones won’t see the vegetables and will gobble up the sauce. If you have extra roasted veggies on hand, repurpose them into a hash, omelette or even a frittata.
keep the hot potato More than 60 per cent of household food waste is avoidable
For a savoury spin on a classic breakfast item, try using leftover mashed potatoes to make pancakes and waffles. You can also use up leftover mashed potatoes in a shepherd’s pie or potato soup.
stock up Keep vegetable scraps including peels, stalks and leaves to make vegetable stock. Onions, carrots, celery and garlic provide a great base. You can then add other leftover vegetable scraps to the stock and base to make a great soup. Collect and store any scraps in a large resealable bag and keep it in the freezer until needed. Bones from a roasted chicken can be used for stock as well. Boil chicken bones with the vegetables scraps for an easy broth that can be frozen for up to three months. With a little creativity, you can reduce food waste and put a fresh spin on your leftovers. For more recipe ideas, your local Loblaws instore registered dietitian is here to help.
