a parent’s guide to

clean air at home W

hen there are kids in the house, cleaning is a year-round chore. And parents are always looking for the best ways to keep their home safe while looking and smelling fresh. To keep your home and family safe when using cleaning products, consider these smart and practical tips:

or irritating, or that can cause allergic reactions when inhaled or when they contact skin. Whether you’re using natural, DIY products or consumer products, always make sure to read the label and ensure there are no ingredients in there that you know can irritate you or your family members.

mother nature’s irritants

keep your home well ventilated

In some cases, DIY or natural products are not always safer than products made in a lab. Many plants naturally produce oils that are toxic

Just as pollutants get trapped inside a closed-up home, so can odours. Regularly opening your windows for short periods of time each day can

greatly improve the scent of your home and air circulation by airing out those nasty smells.

when you can’t get rid of those pesky cooking smells Certain odours linger – they are mysterious and often a combination of cooking aromas that get trapped and become stale. Thanks to the science behind Febreze and the simple ingredients in it, it’s a great option for clearing away odours and leaving your home smelling fresh. ■ — News Canada

The perfect 5-minute breakfast alternative for your on-the-go lifestyle

M

ornings are busy. And once the kids are back in school, this time of day can feel downright hectic. Since breakfast is an integral component to the morning routine, whipping up something that’s ultraquick, easy and healthy can go a long way in easing into the start of your day. A banana-berry smoothie bowl is a perfect way. You can take this bowl to the office or even drink it during your commute – and the kids will love it too. ■

Banana-Berry Smoothie Bowl Prep time: 5 minutes

Serves: 1

Ingredients: • 1 cup 2% partly skimmed milk • ½ cup frozen blueberries • ½ cup frozen raspberries • 1 frozen banana (frozen in chunks for easier blending)

• 2 tbsp ground flax seeds • ½ tsp vanilla • Topping suggestions: sliced bananas, extra berries (fresh or frozen), chia seeds, hemp hearts, granola, nuts.

Directions: 1. Add all ingredients (except toppings) to a blender and process until smooth. Garnish as desired and serve immediately. Tip: Fresh fruit can be used if frozen is unavailable. Add ice to achieve desired thickness.

s we adjust to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the new normal, it can feel like time is on pause. But there are so many opportunities just a click or a tap away to keep learning. Turn self-isolation into selfimprovement with these learning sources.

sign up for an e-newsletter With so much negative news constantly bombarding our TV screens and social media feeds, it can be tempting to step away entirely from sources of information. But one way to keep learning while maintaining some control over what you’re consuming is by subscribing to an e-newsletter with curated content. For example, you can sign up for a daily digest of top stories from your local newspaper. If you’re interested in agriculture, you can check out Agri-Info, an online newsletter about industry

trends, science innovation and even gardening tips and tricks.

take continuing education Time in isolation can be an opportunity for self-improvement. Continuing education courses on a dizzying variety of topics and skills are available online for you to take at your own pace. Many are available for free, but even paying into a program can be a valuable investment in yourself. Services offered through your local library can be a great jumping-off point. Mastering a new skill or area of expertise can provide an essential feeling of accomplishment at a time when we all need it.

get certified New technologies mean new skills, but that doesn’t mean you need a degree to understand them. Many new online tools and programs offer businesses major advantages, and knowing how to

use them can give you a significant edge in the job market. Best of all, plenty of companies offer online, learn at your own page certification in their software completely free. All it takes is some time and dedication, and you can not only pick up a marketable new skill, but end with something to show for it.

play a great podcast Not all material needs you to sit at a computer. It’s a great feeling to take an educational podcast for a walk or learn while you cook. It can open up new topics and provide new perspectives, hands-free. Take The First Sixteen, a new podcast all about the latest breakthroughs and innovations in agriculture and agri-food. Whether you’re a farmer, a foodie or just curious about the latest and greatest, check out this exciting podcast for a fresh helping of knowledge every other week. ith cabin fever setting in and kids struggling with changing safety rules, spending time outdoors is a great way to help them stay happy and active.

Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do when you bundle up – from skating and tobogganing to neighbourhood walks. Wondering if it’s worth the effort? Science shows that time outdoors is impor-

tant for a healthy lifestyle for children and contributes to their development. Here, The Genius of Play, a nonprofit initiative that works to educate parents and caregivers about the benefits of play and to inspire families to play

experience new things Outdoor play gives children the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and try new things. While taking risks won’t always lead to success on the first try, moments like skating without a chair support are helpful for building the confidence and resilience needed to pursue a future career or handle life’s many challenges.

build social skills Childhood games played outdoors can build social skills and teach kids to follow directions. Games as simple as tag or hide-and-seek build communication, teamwork and other important social skills.

use their imaginations Being outside can encourage kids to tap into their creativity and come up with solutions to challenges. For example, a leisurely afternoon in the park spent doing an activity such as learning how to build a snowman can accomplish this in a fun way.

mental well-being

during winter covid lockdowns is essential more, shares five reasons we should be making outdoor play a priority:

physical health Research has shown that physically active kids tend to be leaner and

healthier, while an inactive childhood can lead to a sedentary (and likely unhealthy) lifestyle in adulthood. Physical play builds motor skills that can contribute to success in school and beyond.

Much of outdoor play involves physical activity, thrilling moments and a sense of freedom, all of which can boost endorphins, lower stress levels, and reduce anxiety and depression. Simply touching dirt when creating mud pies or digging for worms can be beneficial. So, don’t be afraid to let your kids get a bit dirty out there. simple tips to create more time each day W

hether it’s to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, we all want to find more time in our busy schedules to do the things we love. While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list. Though it’s impossible to add more minutes to the day, these tips can help you spend more time with those you love.

clean as you go When it comes to keeping your

home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a whole day or weekend on chores. Wipe down your shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew. Dust surfaces in your closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking. Regular maintenance goes a long way towards keeping your home tidy and ready for spur-of-the-moment gatherings.

avoid shopping on weekends If you work a typical nine to five schedule, you probably do your

shopping on weekends because that’s when you have the most time on your hands. But since that’s true for most people, you can expect long lines and crowded spaces when shopping on weekends. Try to carve out some time on a weekday evening, especially Monday or Tuesday, and you’ll free up precious weekend time and avoid long lines.

simplify meal prep Don’t sacrifice eating healthy, nutritious food when you’re pressed for time. Instead, look for low- or no-prep meal options at the grocery store. ■ — Metro Creative

10 THINGS

BY CHUCK RESNICK

your move wil not do

When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.

1

move containers of fuel or hazardous materials

experience, most customers move plants themselves.

Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.

move items larger than we have the ability to do

Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.

3 2 6

move live plants

Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our

moving animals

January 16–30, 2021

When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.

move personal valuables

4

It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.

provide insurance coverage for all items Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.

29

7 8 10 9 rearrange your furniture

Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.

install major appliances

We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.

stop the clock because of a change on your end

We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unex-

EXTRAS

pected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.

load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod

We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination. All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job! Visit twomen.ca to find a location near you. ■

how to make achievable

New Year’s resolutions

I

t’s that time of year where many of us think about setting a goal or resolution for the year ahead. It will come as no surprise that keeping a new year’s resolution can be tricky for most people. Fortunately, there are scientifically proven strategies that can be used to help people better realize their goals. Here are some simple, evidencebased tips to help you stay on track:

Nudges These are gentle reminders that work to influence the choices available to a person at the point of decision-making, so as to make it easier

to comply with the desired behaviour. Try connecting with a friend or family member, telling each other your goals and committing to giving each other nudges to stick to them.

E-messages Electronic messages such as emails, texts and phone notifications will provide you with a series of prompts or reminders until the completed task is done. Set these up to get you started on your goal, and if it’s something ongoing like exercising twice a week, make sure these reminders occur regularly to prompt you.

For 2021, as the pandemic continues, a great goal to set is developing a plan for if you develop a serious illness. Plan Well Guide is a free online tool that focuses on helping people make an advance medical care plan and uses these evidence-based practices to help people realize their goals. The benefits of making your medical care plan in advance are that you are more likely to get the medical care that is right for you if you develop a serious illness, like COVID pneumonia, and you and your family will have greater peace of mind.
