4 smart tricks G
et a jump on your springcleaning with some tips that’ll leave every corner in your home spotless in no time. Make it part of your routine. If you wait to clean and tidy up once a week, a month or even a season, you’re setting yourself up for a long, heavy chore that you’ll only dread and procrastinate. Instead, try incorporating easy tasks like wiping the kitchen counters, straightening out the living room and freshening up your bed with linen spray into your daily schedule and you’ll have a much easier and quicker time of it when you deep clean. Set tidying up on autopilot. It’s a lot easier to clean when you have a system that keeps your house clean.
to make cleaning faster and easier
Keep your mud room area in top shape by encouraging everyone to sort their coats, shoes and mitts as soon as they set foot in the door with designated hangers and pretty storage boxes. Eliminate unattractive packaging and clutter in the bathroom and kitchen with mason jars and decorative canisters for your toiletries and dried goods. Have items work double duty. Get creative and think outside the box to find things that can do some of the cleaning for you. For example, your dishwasher can do much more than just clean your plates, pots and pans. Load it up with plastic toys, light fixtures and toothbrush holders and have it run while you work on everything else. Using dryer sheets
to prevent musty odours in clothing storage boxes, linen closets and shoes means you won’t have to do extra cleaning or laundry just to get rid of unwanted smells. Add some inspiration. Sometimes tasks feel like they take forever simply because they’re dull and repetitive. Time flies by when you’re entertained, so listen to a podcast or stream re-runs of your favourite show in the background for cleaning that seems speedier. You can also use the time more efficiently by multitasking and squeezing in a workout while you clean. Make every step count with a fitness tracker and throw in a few exercises like pushups or squats every time you switch rooms and easily meet your daily physical activity goals. ■ — News Canada

Is it better to invest in a TFSA or an RRSP?
W
e all want to save money on our taxes. And making contributions to government savings plans can help. You may decide to maximize your contribution to your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) prior to the March 1st deadline or contribute to your Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) or both. Choosing between the two can be a tough decision, and while both will help you save, the best option is going to depend on your financial situation and goals. Lisa Gittens, senior tax expert from H&R Block, shares some things to consider.
saving for the future Anytime you make an investment, it’s good to identify exactly what you’re saving for. Putting away money for retirement is usually on a

longer timeline than, say, your child’s education fund. Income earned in both plans is allowed to accumulate tax-free. Because of the more flexible withdrawal rules, TFSAs are typically used for shorter-term goals.
contribution limit Don’t forget that there is a limit to how much you can contribute to either account, which changes each year. In 2021, the TFSA contribution limit is $6,000. For RRSPs, your contribution limit is based on 18 per cent of your earned income, to a maximum of $27,830. “If you don’t contribute the full amount you’re allowed in any one year, you can carry forward any unused contribution room, based on the set limits for each year,” says Gittens. To find out your limits, you can review last year’s Notice of Assessment on the CRA website.
withdrawals With a TFSA, you can withdraw funds any time you like without any tax implications because your contributions are based on after-tax income. In contrast, contributions to a RRSP account are made with pre-tax dollars, so any withdrawals would be subject to tax.
tax deductions Contributions to TFSAs have no impact on your tax situation. However, RRSPs are tax deductible, reducing your income tax payable. “If you contribute to your RRSP before the March 1 deadline of this year, you can claim a deduction on your upcoming tax return” adds Gittens. If you have questions about which savings method makes sense for you, speak with one of H&R Block’s local tax experts. ■ — News Canada

stain removal 101
he basics of laundry seem straightforward, but sometimes it feels like stain removal requires an advanced degree. To help simplify removal, check out these easy tips for five of the most common (and frustrating) stains:
oil and grease Start by covering the stain in baby powder or cornstarch as quickly as possible – the powder will soak up much of the grease or oil. After about 30 minutes, dust off any excess powder and give the garment a wash on the hottest water-setting possible for the fabric.
lipstick
sauces
Kiss away lipstick stains by pretreating with a solvent-based stain removal product (or a bit of liquid detergent). Allow the stain remover to work for at least 15 minutes and then wash the garment in the hottest water possible for the fabric – be sure to read the care label.
Can’t eat pasta without spilling tomato sauce on your top? Simply apply dish detergent to the stain and rub with an ice cube. Once the stain has faded, blot it with a clean cloth soaked with vinegar and wash as usual.
red wine With a wine stain, it’s all about the dab - rubbing the stain can set it further. Dabbing complete, apply salt liberally to the stained area, let it dry and then wash with cold water and a mix of detergent and baking soda.
grass Much like dye stains, grass stains contain a pigment that sticks to clothing fibres. The secret is to act fast, soaking the stain in cold water as soon as possible. Once the garment is really soaked with water, use a cleaning agent like white vinegar, rubbing alcohol or even bleach (if you’re dealing with whites) to treat the stain. ■ — News Canada

10 THINGS
BY CHUCK RESNICK
your move wil not do
When you hire a moving company, it is important to understand what services the firm can and cannot provide. At Two Men and a Truck – Canada, we pride ourselves on accommodating our clients in every possible way. But there are some requests that pose problems. There are 10 common issues that most movers won’t do, or are forbidden to do by law.
1
move containers of fuel or hazardous materials
experience, most customers move plants themselves.
Gas-powered items such as lawn mowers that are not emptied of fuel cannot be moved by your moving company. This is in accordance with Ontario’s Health and Safety Act and Hazard Materials Act. The law prohibits us from transporting these types of goods.
move items larger than we have the ability to do
Moving animals takes special care, and movers are not willing to take responsibility for pets during a move. You are best to arrange for them to be somewhere else on moving day, and then ease them into their new surroundings yourself.
3 2 6
move live plants
Many movers, including our company, have their own guidelines about this. Securing plants takes a level of special treatment that we are not prepared to offer. If customers need advice on how to move plants, we can help them find companies that are equipped to do so. In our

When we see items that are too big and bulky for us to handle, we will let you know. Upright pianos, for example, are incredibly heavy and usually require heavy-duty dollies and a truck with a lift gate. We can definitely help you with any size of piano. Massive wall units can also present challenges. We can help you find the right firm to move those specialty items, if required.
move personal valuables

It makes sense that small valuables like jewelry, stocks, bonds and cash are items you should transport yourself.
provide insurance coverage for all items Ontario’s Conditions of Carriage requires movers to insure items at least 60 cents per pound. If our coverage does not include antiques or works of art, we can arrange it through our Insurer as long as these items are itemized upfront. Your homeowner insurance policy may also have a rider for goods in transit.
19
7 8 10 9 rearrange your furniture
Sometimes people ask us to rearrange their furniture at their destination, which adds to the time estimated for your move. We are happy to provide you with this service.
install major appliances
We are neither plumbers nor electricians. If you require installation of your major appliances, arrange to have those professionals help you during your moving week.
stop the clock because of a change on your end
We get paid from the time we leave our facility until the time we return. If you change the parameters of your contract or something unex-

pected happens on your end to cause a delay, the move continues on as planned but will likely extend longer than your estimate.
load pre-packed boxes, items into a storage pod
We do not do “load only moves.” If someone else is driving the vehicle and the goods are not under our control, we can’t take responsibility for the condition of the goods at their final destination. All of the above help ensure that your possessions arrive at the other end in one piece, with the safety of you, your family and the movers in mind. And, that’s our job! grocery hacks: 4 sustainable swaps for your weekly grocery shopping
L
imiting climate change is a global effort that requires many actions, large and small. Making sustainable food choices when shopping, cooking and eating is more important than ever, and more and more Canadians are looking for sustainable food choices. Here are some tips to get started:
shop seasonal produce. There’s a reason why we hear about products like “winter squash.” Buying seasonal produce is a simple way to know your food is being grown and sold in an environmentally friendly way. Buying seasonal items helps reduce carbon emissions produced from transporting food long distances, supports local farmers and ensures

prevent food waste.
look for a carbon-zero logo
Weekly meal prepping is a good practice that will guarantee you only buy what you need and use up all the ingredients in your fridge. This simple habit goes a long way to ensuring the food you purchase and prepare can be thoroughly enjoyed and doesn’t end up in the trash. If you happen to buy extra, freeze what you don’t use and save and use your leftovers. Buy foods in recyclable packaging. Read food labels for ingredients and nutrition, but also for their recyclability. Think protein packaging can’t be recycled? Think again – companies like Maple Leaf Foods have introduced recyclable packaging for
Eighty-four percent of Canadians would like to know if the foods they purchase are produced in an environmentally friendly way, but 68 per cent find it difficult to identify sustainably made food products. To simplify shopping, Maple Leaf Foods has introduced a new carbon-zero logo on the packaging of many of their brands to make shopping sustainably easier than ever. “We hope consumers will appreciate our products for their sustainability in addition to their great taste, safety and nutrition,” says Dr. Randy Huffman, the company’s Chief Food Safety and Sustainability Officer. ■ — News Canada

Herbed Popcorn Cornbread
try this wholesome recipe the whole family can enjoy
T
ry this easy recipe and add a little variety to your family’s life (and tastebuds) this winter. This is the best savoury recipe for those with less of a sweet tooth and used best as a bread side for chili and other dishes. This cornbread is made with cheese, chives, popcorn and a mix of the perfect blend of herbs. It’s also quick and easy to make. ■ — News Canada
