GREATER TORONTO EDITION, JULY 2021
Should you be a boss or work for one? Climbing the corporate ladder and working for someone else isn’t for everyone. If you have a growing side hustle or idea for that next big business success, here are some things to consider before becoming your own boss.
DO A TEST RUN Confirm there’s actually a market for your product or service. You might think your idea is brilliant but test it out first by polling friends and soliciting feedback from your target customers. Look into whether similar businesses exist and how well they have fared. With your research done, the next step is to register your business.
ASK FOR ADVICE Look for guidance and mentorship from business owners you know, or connect with a business development centre in your city. Online platforms are great places to find networking opportunities with other business owners or entrepreneurs, but also check out your local chamber of commerce and coworking hubs. A team of advisors and peers will help you feel more confident about taking the business ownership plunge.
HAVE A FINANCIAL PLAN
Launching your own business can be expensive. Have an emergency fund to cover three to six months’ worth of expenses “just-in-case” to help ensure a steady cash flow while you grow your business. Taking on a new loan may be tempting but difficult without an established
credit history or if your credit score is low. If your business is incorporated and you are looking to raise capital from outside investors, carefully consider how much of your company’s equity you’re willing to give up.
MAKE A BUSINESS PLAN Being a boss means you’ll need a good
business plan that includes financial statements, a marketing plan, and short – and long-term goals for your business. This will help you decide whether starting a business is right for you, and if so, help guide how you run your business. If business ownership is for you, take the first step and register your business. ●
Tips to help you maximize productivity at work We all know how challenging it can be to stay energetic at work. By Monday night, you are hoping it is miraculously Friday because you already feel so drained. Combat the midafternoon slump by integrating a few simple, healthy habits to boost your productivity. Catch some z’s. Those who consistently get less than the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night may start to experience mild sleep deprivation. Start shifting your schedule to go to bed 30, 20 or even 15 minutes earlier. Making this little change will help with productivity and your overall performance.
Stay hydrated. Drinking a sufficient amount of water can alleviate the mid-afternoon slump because your heart is able to pump blood more efficiently when you are properly hydrated. Here’s a quick tip: keep a bottle on your desk to remind you to drink more water. You can even put lines on the bottle to indicate where the water level should be by a certain time to ensure that you are staying hydrated throughout the day. Keep your eating habits in check. Small changes to your diet can benefit your overall productivity and energy levels. Consuming small meals at regular intervals throughout
the day and getting enough fibre from veggies and whole grains can help keep your energy more consistent. Try keeping some quick and healthy snacks at your desk like nuts, dried fruits and popcorn. Take exercise breaks. With busy work schedules, it becomes harder to include physical activity into our daily routines. If your office doesn’t have an attached gym, you can still make time for mini workout breaks during the day. Try scheduling walking meetings, take a couple of minutes to stretch or opt to take the stairs rather than the elevator. Remember that little changes go a long way. ●

Résumé writing rules to follow
A concise design is key. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
