GREATER TORONTO EDITION, JUNE 2021
3 strategies to manage your time more effectively Busy professionals juggling the responsibilities of work and family often feel pressed for time. Adding a 25th hour to the day might not be possible, but busy men and women can make more time by managing their existing time more effectively. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that stress and time management are linked. People who effectively manage their time may, as a result, prove more capable of handling stressful situations than those who are not as adept at time management.
Men and women can manage their time more effectively by embracing various simple strategies. Effective time management is an ongoing process that often requires people to revisit their approaches as their commitments change. In addition to making such adjustments when necessary, men and women can employ these three strategies to manage their time more effectively.
1. KEEP TRACK OF YOURSELF
Maintain a log that indicates how much time you’re spending on the various tasks you perform throughout the day. Without such a log, it can be difficult to determine where time is being wasted and which activities require the most attention. In addition, maintaining an activity log can shed light on when you tend to be the most productive and when your energy begins to wane. That’s an especially beneficial thing to know, as it may compel you to make changes that can boost your energy levels at times of the day when you can most benefit from a little extra energy. For example, if you notice your productivity routinely slows to a crawl after lunch, you might choose to change your diet, so you consume more energy-boosting foods at midday.
2. STEER CLEAR OF YOUR MOBILE DEVICES
A 2019 study from eMarketer.com estimated that people will spend an average of three hours and 43 minutes on their mobile devices each day in 2020. The study found that much of that time was spent using social networking apps. Some professionals may need to use social networking apps as part of their jobs, but those that don’t should steer clear of their mobile devices during the day. Doing so may reduce distractions that can have an adverse effect on productivity, thereby helping
people get more done in less time. During the workday, turn off unnecessary mobile phone notifications, such as those from sports or social media apps.
3. MAKE AN EFFORT TO CLEAR THE CLUTTERW
Clutter might not seem like too big a threat to productivity, but studies have found that it is. The National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals notes that 54 per cent of adults are overwhelmed by clutter at home and work, with 78 per cent
acknowledging they have no idea how to deal with it. One study even found that the average person wastes more than four hours per week searching for papers. That’s lost time and time that’s certainly not managed effectively. By clearing away clutter at home and at the office, adults may be saving themselves an untold number of hours each week. Men and women can manage their time more effectively by embracing various simple strategies. ● Source: Metro Creative

When professionals are ready to take a new step in their careers, it’s wise to revisit their old résumés and see what can be done to update them for the current day and age. Writing a résumé can be complicated. The rules for finding a new job are continually evolving, and résumés remain a big component of that process. The following are some current résumé trends that will help professionals stand out from the masses.
Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of colour could provide much-needed attention.

BE BRIEF YET EFFECTIVE
A concise design is key. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

Format the résumé so the most pertinent information is within the top one-third of the document. Beef up a summary statement and use it in lieu of an objective. Make sure that summary includes keywords that promote your skills and experience to potentially lure the recruiter into reading more.
TWEAK JOB TITLES
WHO DO YOU KNOW?
Landing a new job is often about what you know but getting a foot in the door is also largely influenced by who you know. Include any professional groups to which you belong or alumni associations. Who knows? The recruiter may have been alumni at your school, and you can bond over your shared mascot. Keywords, phrasing, formatting, and having the right skills for the job can ensure a résume is seen by a recruiter, and perhaps even lead to a new career. ● Source: Metro Creative

CAREER TRAINING
GREATER TORONTO EDITION, JUNE 2021
How to handle the ‘change’ in career change Right now, I’m surrounded by change. Several friends are moving away or having babies. My parents are downsizing from my cherished childhood home. A wonderful elderly relative has died. An adorable lost kitten has charmed his way into our hearts and our household. I’m congratulating several clever courageous clients who are starting new roles having completed our sessions over recent months.
Career change is a prime source of fear and uncertainty. It’s hard to let go, and even harder to trust that what’s coming next won’t bring you unstuck. A focus on changing autumn leaves at the heart of a weekend yoga retreat got me thinking about the impermanence of everything. Ok so it probably wasn’t ideal to be thinking so much as I moved between Downward Dog and Warrior One. However I caught myself meditating on changes of all kinds-the big scary ones like leaving
a comfortable, familiar job and the small almost imperceptible ones we often miss like nature’s seasonal flux or our partner’s new haircut. Nothing stays the same. Not the skin we walk around in, not the landscape we love or loathe, not the people we spend time with, not the work we do, not the way the world works. Although we ‘know’ this in our rational minds, we crave safety, security and understanding about what’s next. We struggle with life’s uncertainty and flux. When the jitters hit me hard just before I moved to Australia a friend offered this wise, insightful advice: ‘At the moment you are feeling rubbish because you can only see what you are leaving behind, and you can’t see what you are going to.’ Career change is a prime source of fear and uncertainty. It’s hard to let go, and even harder to trust that what’s coming next won’t bring you unstuck. This is a bit of a monkey bar experience. You’re holding a bar you know will support your weight but you can’t just hang there. You have to move on. But have you got the strength and skill to grab the next bar and will it hold you up? If the fear of career change has got you hamstrung here’s what I suggest.
• Focus on the things you can control. Gather as much information as you can before you leap. Begin by looking inwards. • Know your game • Ask yourself ‘who am I and what do I want?’ A lot of the work I do with clients begins with finding clear honest answers to this question. • Getting a good grip on this rung of the career change monkey bars can help you reach for the next rung more confidently. Once you know more about you, you can measure the fit of any likely looking career change decision against your skills, strengths and motivations.
SET YOUR BOUNDARIES
Firm up your ‘must haves’. These include the significant and the small practical things we overlook when we’re suspended in career change mid-air. For example, do you need to work with a particular type of manager? Can you work in an open plan office or do you need quiet private space? Do you need a work culture that supports working remotely or an active social program? Work your ‘must haves’ into your interview questions. Remember that interviews are just as much for you as they are for ‘them’. Ask if someone can walk you through the of-
fice. This will give you a sense of the ‘who’ and the ‘how’ of the place where you may be about to invest sizable chunks of your time and energy.
TEST THE WATERS
Think laterally about how you might find out what any potentially perfect role is really like. Take a deep breath and approach your career change target to ask about work shadowing or volunteering for a day. Offer coffee to someone you know a little or lot who works in a role you covet. Ask them about their average working day as well as their wider aspirations and experiences. The more we know the less change scares us.
REFRAME A FALL
Finally, I’m a fan of author Susan Jeffers’s timeless advice in ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’. Essentially, every decision we make is an opportunity to grow and learn. Knowing this helps us handle anything that career change or change of any sort presents. So if you reach for the next rung on the monkey bar and slip, there will be something to learn from how you react to a fall and how you pick yourself up. ● By Jo Green, Career Change Coach
