John Currie

2017 Spirit of Hope Honoree John Currie was unanimously elected Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee (NJDSC) in June of 2013 and in January of 2014, the latter for a full two-year term. He previously served the NJDS as a Deputy Vice-Chair since 1995. Mr. Currie also serves as the Democratic Chair of the Passaic County Democratic Organization, his 25th year in the position.

Chairman Currie was born in North Carolina and is a proud graduate of the Paterson School System and attended Rutgers University. He has received numerous recognition and awards for his community and civic activities throughout the years, with one of his most momentous achievements being induction into the Central Kennedy High School Football Hall of Fame for his outstanding record during his high school years.

Mr. Currie currently serves as a Commissioner on the Board of Elections having been appointed in 1998 by former Republican Governor Whitman. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Passaic Clifton YMCA, United way of Passaic Valley, and an Executive Board Member of the Salvio Association of St. Gerard’s Church.

He also serves as Commissioner on the Paterson Board of Recreation and President of Eastside, Central and Kennedy High Schools Alumni Association. In the past, he served as Vice President of the Paterson Chapter of the NAACP and a member of the Paterson Jaycees. He was elected to the Paterson Branch NAACP Board from 1996 to 2004 and served as first Vice President from 1998 to 2001.

Mr. Currie is married, and he has three sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.

Gerhard Sanchez 2017 Spirit of Hope Honoree

Gerhard Sanchez is Athletic Director for the Essex County Vocational and Technical Schools (ECVTS). He joined ECVTS in 2016, bringing more than 15 years of high school athletic department and education leadership, teaching, and youth development through sports expertise to the district.

Gerhard is also a member of the Maxwell Football Club NJ High School Selection Committee and The Athlife Foundation National Advisory Board.

Gerhard founded The Academics In Motion Fundamental and Life Skills Sports Camps in 2007. The camps are offered for free for students’ in Essex County grades 3rd- 12th.

Previously, Gerhard served as Athletic Director for the Irvington School District and Lenape Valley School District. Gerhard was also an assistant men’s basketball coach at Rider University and Montclair State University. Gerhard has taught in East Orange, Roselle Park, and Little Falls as a physical education teacher. His mentoring program with the National Football Foundation’s “Play It Smart” program at Malcolm X. Shabazz High School from 2001-2004 lead to national recognition as a benchmark program.

Gerhard is a 2001 graduate of Montclair State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Health. He also received his Masters Degree from Montclair State University in Educational Administration and Supervision in 2004. He and his wife, Alison, are the parents of two daughters, Claire and Anne, and a son, Thomas.
