Speaking at the national renewable and sustainable postgraduate symposium at the University of Fort Hare in East London recently, MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Sakhumzi Somyo said academics in the province could help unlock energy opportunities. “Our academics, armed with the right knowledge, can make a difference to our energy and climate future, by providing the right answers to our renewable and sustainable energy questions. “We need to remain vigilant despite the inroads we have made, despite being a leader in the field and having embraced renewable and sustainable energy sources for industrial and domestic use,” Somyo said. Among the projects highlighted at the symposium was a wind farm about to begin construction at the East London Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). The turbines, to be built by a local manufacturer, will produce in excess of 3 million kilowatt-hours per annum, allowing the IDZ to save an estimated R98 million in electricity costs over 20 years and strengthen energy security for its industries. Two 60-ton portal cranes ordered by Stefanutti Stocks for its pre-cast yard in Port Elizabeth will, when they arrive, contribute to the province’s wind energy efforts, designed as they were to be used in the manufacture of reinforced concrete columns for coastal wind turbines. an economy that is not responsive, the need for jobs, social backlogs, unchecked crime, socio economic underdevelopment, underperforming education, failing health systems, etc, etc. and why, after 21 years is the Eastern Cape still the second poorest province? Surely we ought to have progressed by now? As business, we are in need of sound leaders to fearlessly drive the economy of the Eastern Cape to ensure the sustainable livelihoods we support. The creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) need to be given every opportunity to do just that – grow our economy. Lastly on the issue of leadership – please let’s consider what damage instability causes. Whilst we look forward to a new dispensation, let us wish for the right people being selected to drive us forward for the next

fifteen years. This means no more vacancies, no more acting and no more underqualified deployments. With September and Tourism Month just passed and as we head towards the end of the year, we may find some time for reflection and let us take that time to formally strategise on our way forward into 2017. It is after-all, the role of a leader.

here are good leaders and then there are not-so-good leaders. But no organisation can function and grow without some kind of leadership. This includes local government as even the smallest municipality’s budget runs into the millions of Rands to implement their mandate of service delivery. With some interesting results from the recent local elections, we know who our leadership will be for the next five years. For many, the key word is leadership, as we cannot run a country and municipalities or metro’s without effective leadership. What has been missing in the last two elections is decisive and fearless decision making. One often laments that in South Africa we all know what our problems are – and to a large degree, know full well what needs to be done. So, why do we still have poor service delivery,

he challenge to find work remains the biggest obstacle to sustained growth for the South African building industry, and it is to be hoped that the new municipal leaders will find a way to expedite long overdue infrastructural projects, says Norman Seymore, CEO of the Chryso Southern Africa Group. Seymore, who is also vice-president of Chryso globally, was interviewed after a recent function to mark the 20th anniversary of the company’s operations in South Africa. ‘’It is imperative that government - on both local and national level - finds a way to release the billions of rands that have been allocated for new building work in South Africa. Hopefully, the new civic leaders – who will control the country’s biggest municipal budgets - will lead the way to at long last provide the projects building contractors and materials suppliers have eagerly awaited for years,” Seymore said. “Chryso, together with so many other building industry members, during this time had to step up exports and operations outside our borders to survive. This not acceptable when so much work is available in our own country and we fervently hope the new local governments will have both the skills, and willingness, to give the national construction sector a new lease on life.” Looking to Chryso Southern Africa’s future, Seymore said it was an innovative company that would continue to develop products and systems to enhance its product offering and market position. “We will continue to diversify and grow. Research and development will play a vital role and we will this year, as before, invest at least 4% of sales and revenue into this facet of our operations. In addition, we will open a new dedicated R&D Centre at our head office in Jet Park which will, among other services, put increasing emphasis on modifying and adapting the top quality admixtures we import from the Chryso parent company in Europe for the South African market.” He said that being part of a major international group has many benefits and added to the experience that Chryso brings to the market. “An important plus factor for Chryso Southern Africa is that we now produce our own raw materials for the formulation of Chryso’s acclaimed New Generation admixtures and no longer have to import these at Enquiry no: 2 exorbitant costs."

Giant portal cranes bound for Nelson Mandela Bay T wo 60-ton portal cranes ordered by Stefanutti Stocks for its pre-cast yard in Port Elizabeth were recently completed, on schedule, by Condra’s factory in Germiston. The very large Class Three machines will be delivered to site as soon as the yard is ready. After commissioning, they will be used in the manufacture of reinforced concrete columns for coastal wind turbines. “All major South African crane manufacturers competed for the Stefanutti Stocks contract, which was awarded to Condra because of competitive pricing and the ability to meet a short lead time,” the company said in a statement. “Condra is well known for being able to meet deadlines that rival firms cannot, sometimes completing manufacture in less than half the time requested by competitors.” The cranes are substantial machines with 30-metre spans and lift heights of 9 metres.

Each weighs approximately 52 tons. Their design incorporates a number of noteworthy features, including remote control to manage long-travel speeds of between 20 and 60 metres per minute, considerably faster than would be expected for portal machines of this very large size. Conventional pendant back-up will also be supplied. Special attention was paid to wind loading because of the large surface area of the girders; the machines will be fitted with anemometers and Condra’s patented storm brakes to prevent the portal cranes from being moved by the force of extreme winds. The anemometers will activate safety devices in two stages, first sounding a siren at a wind speed of 50 km/h, then automatically engaging the storm brakes at a wind speed of 70 km/h, overriding crane operation and securing the machines against further movement. Crane design also took transportation into

account, with the size of the top frame necessitating manufacture of each girder in two parts to enable shipping by road. The separate parts will be bolted together once delivered. Roads agency adopts new asphalt and bitumen specs

he South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) recently announced the adoption of two new road materials engineering specifications for the construction of the national road network and other roads under its jurisdiction. According to a statement from SANRAL the new specifications for the asphalt design mix and for bitumen, “are more geared towards a paradigm of scientific knowledge in comparison to the South African mechanistic pavement design method”. The new methodology that the agency is adopting will rely on temperature isotypes or temperature gradient regions in conjunction with the four classes of traffic volume over road surfaces to determine the bitumen design specifications. Bitumen is an essential product in road construction and repair. The major benefit of pairing the bitumen with the specific requirements of the climatic

area and the traffic loading is that the predictability of the longevity of the bitumen and subsequently, the road surface, can be better understood, Sanral said. “From this understanding comes the ability to build roads that can last longer, which will save tax payers’ money in the long run,” the statement said. SANRAL will also introduce a new asphalt design method. “Historically, we have drawn on the empirical method. However, we have now put a lot of time into understanding the finite elements, and the new mix design method will be more scientifically-orientated,” said Sean Strydom, SANRAL Southern Region Materials Specialist. The ability to analyse and predict what will happen in a structural element over time is the very basis of structural design. This ability is now within reach of the pavement engineer

and the design of asphalt layers from the same principles as structural design will result in more cost effective road layers being constructed. “SANRAL will introduce software drawing on the insight generated by sophisticated mathematical models for every material layer in the pavement, from the lower-level granular layers to the more expensive upper layers which is cement and bitumen stabilised layers. Up until now we have never looked at how these layers interact with each other,” Strydom said. “The software will also allow us to conduct an HDM4 analysis or analysis of the lifecycle costs,” he said. SANRAL announced in March this year the opening of a new engineering materials laboratory that will see road materials from across the Eastern Cape now being tested in Port Elizabeth.

Procurement roadshow T comes to Eastern Cape E xisting and potential suppliers were invited by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) to day-long procurement imbizos in the of Mthatha, East London and Port Elizabeth recently. The series of roadshows was in line with TPT’s efforts to engage with and create opportunities for small, medium and large enterprises in South Africa, particularly businesses owned by black women, black youth and people with disabilities. Co-operatives, qualifying small entities and exempt micro enterprises are also a priority. According to a statement from TPT, the procurement imbizos were driven by its Eastern Cape GM, Siya Mhlaluka (pictured), under the theme of “moving from potential to participation”. An important part of this is the creation of a platform for the exchange of information so that SMMEs can connect with corporate business and build stronger relationships with TPT through fostering dialogue.

“As a state-owned company and because the empowerment of South Africa’s historically disadvantaged people is high on government’s agenda, the onus is on us to implement this agenda,” said Mhlaluka. He added that four key areas were identified in which SMMEs often fail to comply when attempting to work with Transnet. The imbizos analysed these requirements and challenges for SMME’s which include, governance, specifications, tendering processes and supplier development. According to Mhlaluka the imbizos also opened doors and opportunities to work with some of TPT’s established suppliers who were invited to the imbizos and encouraged to engage with the attending businesses to educate them about the required processes as well as identifying any future partnerships or collaborations. “The imbizo creates an opportunity for all the role-players and ben-

eficiaries to exchange ideas about how TPT can collectively improve active participation in the economic growth of the country; educate suppliers on Transnet procurement practices and provide information on existing enterprise supplier development (ESD) programmes,” Mhlaluka said. These events also aim to provide potential suppliers with the opportunity of meeting and engaging with all of the relevant TPT individuals and other companies in one day and at one location, which would normally take these SMME’s months. “This nationwide roadshow looks to establish TPT’s reputation for introducing innovative programmes that ensure the full participation of these businesses in the private sector and TPT contracting process,” the TNP statement said. “The entire repertoire of goods and services currently procured by TPT as well as future requirements were showEnquiry no: 5 cased at these events.”

HE business community of Nelson Mandela Bay has experienced a productive third quarter, as we take up the baton of the fourth quarter with vigour and energy to finish off our winning year in 2016. Our biggest win for the quarter, and possibly even the year, has been the recent judgement in favour of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and four energy intensive companies: Borbet SA, PG Group, Crown Chickens and Agni Steels SA. The outcome of the judgement could mean that potentially all electricity users in the country will only have a 3.5% increase from next year, as opposed to the 8% which was granted by the National Energy Regular of South Africa (Nersa) to Eskom. I want to sincerely thank the energy intensive companies, our legal team as well as the volunteer members of the Electricity & Energy Task Team of the Business Chamber for all their hard work. The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has over the years lobbied extensively against unsustainable electricity increases on all available platforms. Businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay continue to experience the high cost of electricity in the city to be a major inhibiting factor to our competitive advantage. This is why the judgment is such good news not only to the members of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber - but to each and every user of electricity throughout South Africa. Through the work of our Electricity and Energy Task Team the Business Chamber will continue to lobby on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Bay business community for the following: quality, cost, security and visibility of supply. The overall goal of the Electricity and Energy Task Team is to create an energy smart city. Another feather in the cap of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business

Chamber was receiving a fourth Diamond Arrow Award from PMR. africa. This year, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber was specifically recognised with a Diamond Arrow as an institution doing the most towards Economic Growth and Development in the Eastern Cape. I would also like to congratulate our member companies who received PMR.africa awards, as well as those who excelled during the recent Eastern Cape Exporter of the Year Awards. Congratulations in particular to SJM Flex who scooped the coveted Exporter of the Year title and was honoured by the Exporters Club of South Africa – Eastern Cape for the company’s remarkable successes and achievements over the past year. In August the local government elections also changed the political landscape of the city. As a politically neutral organisation, we will continue to build on our relationships with the municipality’s senior executives and the new Executive Mayor Athol Trollip and his team. We are particularly committed to driving a unified vision for the city. We look forward to having a positive working relationship with the local government to ensure the economic growth and development of Nelson Mandela Bay into the future. In July the office bearers of the Business Chamber also had a fruitful meeting with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. The event was hosted by the Coega Development Corporation, where the energy mix of the region was discussed. This was an extremely positive engagement and we look forward to Nelson Mandela Bay positioning itself as the energy hub of the country.

Automaker’s best technician from PE

he best Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu technician in the country hails from Nelson Mandela Bay. Gawie Engelbrecht (30), of Williams Hunt Port Elizabeth, claimed this coveted title during the annual General Motors South Africa (GMSA) Top Technician Skills Awards recently. The runners up were Hendre Hulscher of Reeds N1 City (32) in the Western Cape and Sujit Munnisunker (47) of South Coast Motors in Kwa-Zulu Natal, who claimed second and third place respectively. The three top technicians were the last men standing after a total of 327 technicians across GMSA’s 132 dealerships participated in the first knockout round. This was followed by round two where 67 technicians competed for a place in the top 10. During the semifinals the top five remained and they competed in final round during two days of gruelling diagnostics and problem solving. Engelbrecht, who has been working for Williams Hunt Port Elizabeth for the past 11 years, described the competition as challenging and tough. “I just concentrated on fixing the problems. Throughout the competition I stayed focused and gave it my best,” he said. The young man was also recently promoted to service manager, but said he remains hands-on in the workshop, often working long hours to diagnose vehicle issues. “Winning the competition and having your skills and abilities recognised is a huge honour. I must admit that I feel very proud of myself. Our Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu customers are everything and they deserve technicians that

Left, Ian Nicholls, President and Md of GM South Africa and first place winner, Gawie Engelbrecht are trained to the highest standard.” Ian Nicholls, President and Managing Director of GM South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, congratulated the technicians for delivering service excellence. He said one of the company’s core values is putting the customer at the centre of everything they do. “The Top Technician competition is proof of this commitment to our customers, where the focus is on ensuring that our technicians meet and exceed our customers’ expectations, “Our technicians play a critical role in determining the level of satisfaction which our customers experience with their vehicles,” said Nicholls. GMSA provides approximately 60 000 hours of regular and extensive training yearly for all service personnel. “We want to ensure that we continuously improve service levels at our dealers. All Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu service centres are equipped with a complete range of equipment and analytical systems to carry out maintenance and repairs,” Nicholls said. Enquiry no: 6

he Coega Development Corporation (CDC) recently broke ground to mark the historic R11-billion Beijing Automobile International Corporation (BAIC) investment at the Coega IDZ. The event follows the announcement by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies on the successful contractual conclusion between BAIC and the CDC, effectively ensuring the establishment of a completely knocked down (CKD) automotive manufacturing plant in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). According to Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC Unit Head marketing and communications, “the 85 000 square metre plant will occupy 54 hectares of land in Zone 1 of the Coega IDZ, with an expectant number of jobs totalling 2,500 directly, and more than 10,600

jobs indirectly”. “The plant is the single largest investment in the whole of Africa and is expected to start with construction before the end of the year, lasting little over 18 months

with production commencement by the end of 2017. Furthermore, the plant will have a maximum annual production capacity of 100 000 units,” said Vilakazi. The CDC, which celebrates 16 years of existence, has empowered growth and development through driving sustainable socioeconomic development in the Eastern Cape and the country at large. As result of the BAIC investment, the economy-wide GDP impact in the Eastern Cape Province, due to the BAIC construction project, is estimated at R945,1 million. This represents about 0,41 percent of Eastern Cape’s 2014 GDP_R, at constant 2010 price. The spending related to the construction of new facility to accommodate BAIC’s vehicle manufacturing plant within the Coega IDZ would result in direct and indirect output of R2,4 billion in Eastern Cape, of which the majority of expenses to benefit the Metro. “When adding the induced effect of the wage income, the impact of the economywide effect is estimated at R3,3 billion for the Eastern Cape Province,” Vilakazi said. The BAIC investment is an outcome of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation that was held in Johannesburg in December 2015, where President Jacob Zuma and Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping signed fewer less than 26 bilateral agreements valued at approximately R100 billion. Davies said, “the size of this investment demonstrates confidence by China and confidence in South Africa as an investment destination. The investment is strategic and is a major project in terms of our bilateral relationship and a key project supported by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Investment”. Enquiry no: 8

Eastern Cape region, with the opening of a branch office in Port Elizabeth. The operation is headed by newly-appointed Dominique le Roy, who will be responsible for all sales and marketing initiatives. The Port Elizabeth branch operates as an extension of Netxactics’ existing office in Cape Town, but now offer products, services and support to a key area of the Eastern Cape region. Customers and partners in South Africa and several neighbouring countries had, in the past, been serviced directly from the company’s Johannesburg and Cape Town offices. National sales manager Pierre Louw said the company had decided to open a branch in Port Elizabeth for two main reasons. “Firstly, to increase our presence in the market in accordance with our long-term expansion strategy, and secondly, to extend our products and services to the Eastern Cape. “Our local presence will not only be of great benefit to our partners, but also to customers in the area who use our products on a daily basis.” The region will be serviced through Netxactics’ existing partner network. “We believe the Eastern Cape has immense potential. Extending our partner programme to new channel partners in the area also represents an immense growth opportunity for Netxactics,” he said. The decision to open a branch in Port Elizabeth has been strengthened by the fact that this province has been earmarked as a key area for growth and economic development by government. “Our decision to have local distributor presence shows our commitment to building a strong and competitive environment within the IT security industry,” said Louw.

30-year-old motors still going strong

ranklin Electric SA customer Chris Prinsloo did a double take when he removed the Franklin Electric 4” submersible motor from his borehole only to find there was nothing wrong with it. The fact that is was 30 years old and had never been replaced was remarkable enough. But discovering that it was still in perfect working condition was astounding. Prinsloo, a qualified electrician, said he first sunk his own borehole in 1986, using a submersible motor and pump system purchased from Franklin Electric SA. The pump was installed at a depth of 24 metres with the borehole keeping his garden green for 20 years without a hitch. After tripping his electricity supply on a few occasions the pump was removed and a lead out cable replaced, solving the problem. During a drought in the ‘90s, Prinsloo pushed

his borehole pump to full capacity as it supplied his entire household and residence with all their fresh water needs. In 2015 and after almost 30 years of faultless service the pump once again began tripping Prinsloo’s power supply. Convinced that the pump and motor had had their day Prinsloo went as far as purchasing a new pump system before the old unit was even unearthed. “You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that the only problem was the lead out cable once again – and not the pump or motor itself,” Prinsloo said. The company said client testimonials like these are not unusual when it comes to their product line of submersible water lubricated motors, with two others at least, still operating faultlessly since they were first purchased

in 1978 and 1972, the year that Franklin Electric was founded in South Africa. The company will be keeping the three reclaimed submersible motors on display whose combined age tally up to an incredible 112 years. “There is nothing wrong with the motors,” said Jano Verreynne, the company’s Product Manager of Centrifugal Technology, Drivers and Controls. “We exchanged them with our client’s for new ones so we could put the old ones on display to showcase their longstanding performance.” The three reclaimed motors have all been replaced by Franklin Electric SA at their own

cost and although the aesthetics of the motors may have changed slightly over the years, the inner mechanisms of the component are still based on the original Franklin Electric design from 1944. Franklin Electric SA will be launching its next generation of 4” submersible motors with upgrades that include a new 316 stainless steel casing, top and bottom end bells. The new design also incorporates a novel plug sleeve for ease of installation and to reduce the risk of water ingress. The new model also has an outer replenishing option via syringe. As per the original design, the motors remain water-lubricated as opposed to oil-filled which reduces the risk of borehole water contamination or the motor malfunctioning. Enquiry no: 10

urnishing, de-magnetization and measuring of electrical run-outs by thermal and plasma coating solutions specialist, Thermaspray, aids with improving the mechanical reliability of rotating equipment inside motors and generators resulting in reduced failure risks, extended component life and improved uptime, the company says. Metallurgical Engineer at Thermaspray Shaik Hoosain said in-service monitoring of both mechanical and electrical run-out will improve the mechanical reliability and reduce the risk of failures and subsequent costs of motors, generators and specifically the lower shaft and bearing housings. Discussing the two types of runouts, Hoosain said that a mechanical run-out by a dial indicator is not done in-situ. “Electrical run-out measures the deviations in the electrical properties of the material and cannot be measured with a dial indicator. It is

detected by means of in-service eddy–current proximity probes on these motors and generators. Proximity probes measure and monitor the relative vibration or motion between a shaft and its stationary bearing surface,” Hoosen said. For a true and accurate in-service measurement, the electrical run-out is measured and corrected prior to the assembly of the equipment. “We measure and correct electrical run-out through a process called burnishing that involves the rolling of a blunt tool against the surface of a work piece with a force being applied by the tool.” After the burnishing process, electrical runout can then be measured using an electrical run-out indicator apparatus on a lathe or inspection bench. Electrical run-out is measured every 1° through 360° and plotted on graphs using specialized, calibrated equipEnquiry no: 12 ment and applicable software.

New motors powering NMMU pipeline technology T ectra Automation has been contracted to supply Bosch Rexroth motors and control systems, which are essential in the production of the patented WeldCore technology, a result of a 15-year research relationship between Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and Eskom. WeldCore is able to determine the lifespan, predict the maintenance requirements and hence prevent the failure of high-temperature steam pipes in refineries and power stations. Ideal for older processing plants, WeldCore utilises a specialised sampling technique to provide information on whether a pipeline or other high value component needs replacement. WeldCore can defer downtime for unnecessary maintenance, predict end-of-life dates and can play a crucial role in the prevention of premature failure by identifying problems. The process involves removing a cylindrical sample from the pipeline wall or part of the component primarily exposed to high pres-

I

sure and temperature, this sample is used for advanced testing. The WeldCore machine then repairs the blind hole using a solid-state welding technique, friction tapered hydro pillar processing (FTHPP), which provides a repaired site with mechanical properties almost identical to the parent material. By analysing an actual sample of the pipeline or component, this method provides more accurate results than traditional non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as dye-penetrant, X-Ray and magnetic particle inspection. In addition, friction welding takes only a minute while traditional weld repair can cost the plant hours of downtime. WeldCore relies on a rotating spindle that can maintain its speed accurately despite a wide range of torques. To achieve this, WeldCore utilised a Bosch Rexroth MSK071E servo motor paired with HCS03.1 servo drive to accurately maintain speed throughout both

Johann Pieterse, Afrox Business Manager for Manufacturing Industries, said, “Quality training and development arise from good training infrastructure. The Afrox team leaped at the opportunity to build a top class training facility to accommodate 12 students”. He said this would be supported by the company’s developed training programmes,

the low speed coring and high speed welding processes. Mobility is a key differentiator of WeldCore, and the Bosch Rexroth motor used is the only one on the market that can deliver the power required while still being small enough to be carried by one or two people. A motor from another manufacturer would require overhead rigging in order to assemble the machine each time it is positioned to take a sample. The Bosch Rexroth servo drive provides an automated system with a simplified interface that makes WeldCore easy to operate, and reduces human error and the likelihood of damage to the plant. The project is a result of more than a decade’s research, prototypes and testing at NMMU, Port Elizabeth, involving students, engineers and local manufacturing companies. The final assembly, wiring and the software was completed internally by eNtsa, based at NMMU, resulting in an integrat-

MACHINE TOOLS

Two new cutting tool options for tough conditions

W

irtgen SA, local subsidiary of the Wirtgen Group, global leader in mobile machine solutions for road construction and rehabilitation, as well as mining and mineral processing, recently launched two new cutting tools for cold recyclers and soil stabilisers to the South African market. In cold recycling and soil stabilising, choosing the right cutting tools alongside primary machinery has a significant impact on both the quality and cost efficiency of the application. No two cutting bases are the same; sometimes debris or large stones make soil stabilising more challenging, or the base substrate for rehabilitation is studded with abrasive materials. This means that not only do the cutting substrates differ significantly, but the forces

that act on the milling and mixing rotor can also vary drastically as a result. Wirtgen’s two new cutting tools, the Generation Z and the HT22, are designed to take on that challenge. Ian Kukard, Parts Manager at Wirtgen SA, said, “The Generation Z point-attack cutting tools and the HT22 quick-change toolholder system are a superb and robust combination offering long tool life and offer a host of benefits to the user, including high impact resistant, reduced wear and greater stability”. The reshaped carbide tip of the Generation Z point attack cutting tools has been further reinforced and the quality of the carbide mate-

hile flat plate laser cutting has been in existence for a long time, new tube laser cutting technology is revolutionising the tube and pipe industry. This is according to Andrew Poole, Managing Director at First Cut, sole distributor and representative for BLM in South Africa. Poole said exciting possibilities were opening up for tube processing, resulting in a mind shift within the fabrication sector both locally and globally. “The high-speed efficiency of BLM’s fibre laser machines for tube cutting is challenging our thinking around what is and what is not possible. Traditional fabrication relies heavily upon labour and infrastructure, with many

steps in the process. Tube laser processing is changing all that,” said Poole. First Cut, an established distributor of cutting consumables and capital equipment, has strong ties with some of the leading global brands in steel processing machinery, including BLM. Based in Italy, BLM has for decades focused on optimising the tube fabrication process through its range of tube end-forming/ bending machinery and tube laser cutting equipment. “We have been excited to introduce BLM’s tube laser machines to the South African market. They provide a highly versatile, automated cutting solution that is significantly faster and more accurate than conventional processing,” said Poole. One of First Cut’s customers which is an innovative ‘early adopter’ of this technology is TWTLP (TW Tube Laser Processing). Founded in 2014 with the well-known TW Profile as its majority shareholder, TWTLP has pioneered its way to fast becoming one of the largest service centres in the laser and profile cutting industry in South Africa. Having purchased two BLM tube laser processors from First Cut in 2015 and early 2016, TWTLP – and its customers - are already seeing significant return-on-investment. “We were passionate about finding an all-inone solution for the processing of tubes and sections. It is exciting to note that, through tube laser technology, anything which can be done on plate can now be done on tube and section,” said Tharin Stuart, Managing Director of TWTLP, who has extensive experience in the fabrication sector.

rial has been optimised further. These improvements make the cutting tool more robust and resistant to large blocks of stone and abrasive materials. The steel base, wear plate and clamping sleeve have also been modified, making the Generation Z components more durable. Cutting tools with shank diameters of either 22mm or 25mm can be used with the Generation Z range, so users can adapt to different requirements with ease and precision. The HT22 quick-change toolholder system is a new development from the Wirtgen Group. Due to the updated geometrical design of the

eamless forged product manufacturer DCD Ringrollers is expanding into new market segments with its recent forging of a large nozzle component weighing over three tons. “With a height of 850mm, this forging is the largest of 43 components ordered by a South African customer for a pressure vessel application,” said DCD Ringrollers executive director Dion Booyens. “Once again pushing the boundaries on behalf of our customers. Booyens said DCD was able to meet the pricing requirements of the customer in quoting on these components, and expected to now be able to participate more assertively in the local markets for these and similar components. “With this exciting achievement under our belt, we now look forward to the prospect of forging other components – such as even larger and heavier nozzles, bushes, rolls and pinions,” he said. “In particular, we are in a position to manufacture a larger range for markets where pressure vessels are in use and heavy section nozzles are required.” The company’s manufacturing facility at Vereeniging in Gauteng province boasts a 35 000-ton annual production capacity and is equipped with the latest automated forging

he Kinkelder range of specialist power saw blades was recently beefed up with the addition of its TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) ‘Champion’ blade, designed for high-volume steel tubing and solid cutting. Mike Cronin, Managing Director of Elquip Solutions, which represents Netherlands-based Kinkelder in South Africa, said the fact the blade was manufactured from tungsten carbide and PVD (polyvinlidene) formulations significantly reduced wear and provided cutting speeds of between 180 and 300 m/min. Another Kinkelder product is their TCT flying cut-off range for standard, orbital and scarf cutting. Cronin said these industrial blades were perfect for instances where high mechanical stresses and operating temperatures place great demands on the blades. The blades are designed to service the ERW (electric resistance welded) tube and pipe industry. “Kinkelder HSS blades can be repaired and re-sharpened by Elquip Solutions at our on-site blade sharpening facility, which is a fantastic value-added service offering to our customers,” Cronin said. The HSS (high-speed steel) blade is used for either steel-based or non-ferrous materials, such as brass and aluminium. Sizes range from 150 mm to 630 mm in diameter with a number of tooth styles available as standard stock. There are several different coatings available such as flash chrome, titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbon nitride

INDUSTRIAL CLEANING

A

Maker of Olympics-grade sweeper eyes EC market

fter the adoption of its MC 50 vacuum sweeper by a leading coastal metro recently, Kärcher South Africa is looking to expand the range to other South African municipalities, including in the Eastern Cape. The Kärcher range of municipal vacuum sweepers is produced solely in Germany and comes in two models, namely the MC 50 and the MC 130. The municipality ordered three units of the MC 50 model. According to Kärcher the MC 50 is both very narrow and compact. It is ideal for cleaning pavements and reaching places that bigger machines cannot reach. The size also allows for turning in tight spaces. It is powered by a four stroke diesel Yanmar engine and generates 19.2kw or 26 horsepower. It can reach a maximum speed of 20km/h and tackle up to a 25% gradient. The dimensions are 2.960mm x 1.090mm x 1.970 mm. It has a deposit capacity of 500ℓ and its working width is between 900 – 1 400 mm. With the addition of a 3rd side brush, this can be increased to 2 000mm. The sweeper can clean an area of 14 000m² per hour.

A floating roller sweeping system with relief and hydraulic floating position ensures constant contact pressure and therefore an optimal sweeping level on uneven surfaces. A bumper at the front and side provides added safety. The bulk waste flap opens automatically for larger objects such as bottles or larger quantities of light waste such as leaves or packaging and then closes again as quickly as possible, allowing for perfect suction results without any residue being left behind in the sweep. The straight suction channel minimises the risk of blockages. For direct access and fast cleaning, the suction pipe between the suction mouth and waste container can be removed with two handles with no need for extra tools. This makes for easy blockage clearing and cleaning to happen on site immediately and with no added downtime. The innovative suction system of the MC 50 was developed by computational flow dynamic simulations, with the resulting reduction in noise, reduced consumption, reduced emissions and reduced wear and tear. The robust

and corrosion-free waste container with a 500ℓ capacity allows for a fill level up to 100% and is easy to empty. In addition, the cab has been designed for optimal operator space and comfort and offers space for up to two people. It offers an unrestricted 360 degree all round view with reverse camera, permanent hydraulic allwheel drive and a braked hydraulic machine drive plus an air conditioned cab. The sweeper is fitted with additional implements such as a built in high pressure cleaner for cleaning of areas with stubborn dirt. It has an external vacuum hose for vacuuming of hard to reach areas and corners. The sweeper is also fitted with a fine spray dust suppression system. Kärcher said this sweeper was developed in close co-operation with customers around the world. “This new sweeper is truly a machine for all year round use and not only is it reliable, it is Kärcher reliable. "The robustness matches up to the high standards applied to any other equipment supplied by the company and the innovative

technology is unsurpassed in the industry,” the company said. The mechanical cleaning sweeping system was developed, among other things, using CFD air flow analyses and Virtual Reality, both of which are essential technology in developing products of the future. “These sweepers are so reliable they were used in London during the 2012 Olympics to keep the city clean. "Kärcher was also named the official supplier of cleaning equipment to the Rio Olympics 2016 where a number of these units were seen on a daily basis cleaning the city."

Helping keep South Africa’s beaches clean

S

outh Africa’s 2 500 kms of coastline with its beautiful beaches are popular with local as well as international tourists and keeping these natural resources spotless is vital for the country’s tourism industry. But the current beach cleaning technology used by some coastal municipalities battles to cope with glass and other debris smaller than 10mm. One of them recently approached Wacker Neuson for a solution. The company said in a statement that its range of compact and light machines and equipment make them suitable for a wide range of application, from construction, roadmaking and mining to landscaping and even beach cleaning. After being apporached by the municipality, Wacker Neuson demonstrated, “the excellent beach cleaning capabilities,” of its 1101CP skid steer loader with a specialised beach cleaning attachment. With a payload of 1,150 kg, the loader delivers outstanding traction and can easily negotiate sandy, muddy or rocky terrain, the company said. The high-quality, rigid steel

structure is designed for stability and a longer service life which translates to low total cost of ownership for the end-user. Wacker Neuson Regional President for SubSaharan Africa, Eugene Brown, said the demonstration had been a huge success. “Our machine worked beautifully, moving seamlessly along the beach collecting a wide array of rubble which included glass, plastic, tins and papers”.

Setting the standard

“What particularly impressed the municipal representatives was the attachment’s ability to pick up small debris, even small chicken bones! This is made possible by the specially developed screens, with hole sizes that trap debris as small as 10mm.” Featuring hydraulic pilot control, both machine and attachment is operator friendly making it an efficient and productive one-man operation with very little training required. The screens are easily and quickly locked into place using two simple hand-held bolts fitted on either side of the attachment. The Wacker Neuson 1101cp features a high-output hydraulic system, together with an in-cab control box for the attachment. Easy adjustment of the cleaning depth and hopper opening are performed via the in-cab control box, with the collection bucket at the rear of the machine fitted with hydraulic operated cylinders for fast dumping of collected debris. The proprietary PowerRide load spring suspension system ensures fast and secure material transport over longer distances, without Enquiry no: 21 loss even over rough terrain.

New scrubber cleans up with 'nano technology'

G

oscor Cleaning Equipment, part of the Goscor Group of Companies, released a new generation compact Walk-Behind Scrubber from the well-known Tennant range of cleaning equipment products, called the T300, which introduces enhanced operator ergonomics and exclusive Nano technology to meet the cleaning needs of a diverse range of environments. According to Goscor Cleaning Equipment’s General Manager, Greg Venter, the new T300 range is the first to include the next generation of successful, sustainable cleaning technology, known as ec-H2O NanoClean. “Like the original ec-H2O, ec-H2O NanoClean technology electrically converts water into an innovative cleaning solution that cleans effectively, saves money and reduces environmental impact compared to daily floor cleaning chemicals,” he added. “This converted water is created by an on-board e-cell that generates millions of microscopic bubbles—nanobubbles—per milliliter of solution. These nanobubbles then promote the cleaning efficacy of the solution.” TheT300 and T300e Walk-Behind Scrubbers offer a selection of multiple machine configurations to optimise cleaning performance across many hard surface conditions. Configurations include single disk, orbital, dual disk, and dual cylindrical options. The T300 includes an integrated LCD touchscreen that provides simplified operation, as well as programmable zone settings, supervisor lock-out capabilities and on-board/on-demand videos to take the guess work out of the cleaning process. Other key features that differentiate the T300 range are the improved and convenient hygenic tank, which allows for easy access when cleaning to help reduce mould, bacteria and other contaminants that can grow in enclosed tanks. The magnetic head allow pads and brushes to be quickly changed with minimal operator effort. According to Venter, this new range from Tennant combines high performance, lower operating costs, operator ease-of-use and innovative features to help protect health and safety. “This customisable and flexible cleaning solution is ideal for multiple applications across the retail, hospitality, facilities management and other commercial environments.” Enquiry no: 22

DISASTER MANAGEMENT, SECURITY & FIRE PROTECTION

Securing your enterprise M anufacturing and industrial facilities are operating in ways they scarcely could have imagined a few decades ago, posing significant new risks for companies. That’s the warning from Rockwell Automation’s Christo Buys, who points out that greater connectivity and information sharing is significantly transforming companies and their operations. “They’re converging IT and operations technology (OT) systems and using new technologies such as mobile, analytics, cloud and virtualisation to do more than ever before.” However, just as the nature of manufacturing and industrial operations has changed, so have the security risks. More connected operations can create more potential entrance points for security threats. These threats can come in many different forms — physical or digital, internal or external, malicious or unintentional. As a result, says Buys, industrial

E

security must be holistic. “It should extend from the enterprise through the plant level and even out to end devices, and address risks across people, processes and technologies. It should also involve collaboration between IT and OT personnel. Both sides have vital roles to play.” He says an effective industrial security programme is a key component of such a holistic approach. “A security assessment will help you understand your current security posture regarding your software, networks, control system, policies and procedures, and even employee behaviours. It should be the starting point for any security policy.” The final outcome of any security assessment should include a documented and actionable list of mitigation techniques required to bring an operation to an acceptable risk state. Another key principle, says Buys,

is a defence-in-depth (DiD) security framework. Based on the notion that any one point of protection can and likely will be defeated or breached, DiD security establishes multiple layers of protection through a combination of physical, electronic and procedural safeguards. Turning to vendors, Buys advises that before selecting one, you ask them to disclose their security policies and practices. “Consider whether they follow five core security principles for designing products used in a control system: A secure network infrastructure, authentication and policy management, content protection, tamper detection, and robustness. “Security threats aren’t relenting. They will only continue to evolve as the industry changes its security practices or implements new defences. Your risk management strategy must keep pace, and should be ongoing, and evolve with or ahead of the changing threat landscape.” Rockwell Automation is the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and information. Buys is its Business Manager, Control Systems for Sub-Saharan Africa. Enquiry no: 16

Two new pressure vent options

nergas Technologies, a supplier of high-end, specialised equipment to the oil and gas industries in Southern Africa, is set to launch two new pressure vent products. These are from Protectoseal and are the Series 51700 Hinged Emergency Pressure Manhole Cover Vent and the Series 52600 Emergency Pressure/ Vacuum Relief Vent. While both provide emergency pressure relief for storage tanks exposed to external fire, the Protectoseal Series 52600 also provides vacuum relief. Ever since the sixth edition of API 2000 (API Standard for Venting Atmospheric and Low Pressure Storage Tanks) was launched, tank designers had to consider the more stringent tank vacuum relief requirements. The required tank in-breathing rate is often much higher than the required out-breathing rate. This effectively means that that the in-breathing rate

determines the conservation vent’s size. According to Laetitia Botha, Energas Technologies Product Engineer, “The Protectoseal Series 51700 Hinged Emergency Pressure Manhole Cover is designed to be installed on the manhole openings of tanks and helps to relieve large volumes of vapours beyond the capacity of the regular operating conservation vent”. In comparison, the Series 52600 Emergency Pressure/Vacuum Relief Vent is designed to offer similar capacity emergency relief, but has the added benefit of offering vacuum relief. “This vacuum relief capacity supplements the existing vacuum relief capacity of the conservation vent and as a result a smaller conservation vent can be selected,” Botha said.

Taking the sting out of power surges

new breed of surge arresters being A offered to South African peroleum companies offers the promise of drastically

reduced down time at petrol stations caused by power surges and lighting strikes. According to Surgetek’s Paul van As, the company’s new Copa surge arrester can slash down time by an impressive 98%. To achieve this, however, surge protection must be installed in the petrol dispensers as well as the back office of a petrol station. “It is absolutely essential that both power and data sources are protected,” said Van As. Surgetek supplies surge protection products directly to petrol dispenser manufacturers and forecourt technology manufacturer UCS Technology Services. “When UCS updated their forecourt control technology last year it made sense to redesign and modify our surge protection products,” said Van As, Surgetek’s Low Voltage Divisional Manager. The Copa Data Multi Wire has been designed for surge currents up to 10kA. It has three configurations; 4-, 8- and 12-wire options and housed in a slimmer casing than its predecessor. Its dimensions of 22.5 mm-wide and 92 mm-high allow make it both easy to install and remove when necessary. All inner components are locally manufactured and assemEnquiry no: 18 bled.

Protectoseal vents are mostly used by petrochemical refineries and at fuel depots, but are also common in the chemical, pharmaceutical, paper and food industries. They can be supplied in exotic material or in fibreglass reinforced plastic for corrosive environments. These vents, all factory-set by Protectoseal, are subjected to a leakage test and provide reliable emergency venting when required. The hinged type emergency vent automatically recloses once the conditions have returned to normal to minimise the amount of vapour unnecessarily vented out. “This is an especially important feature for our customers, because of the increasing demands on factories and refineries to reduce emissions,” Botha Enquiry no: 17 said.

Do you have a disaster plan?

D

espite many businesses utilising gas, whether for cooking and heating or hot work, many are unaware of safe handling and storage practices, and also do not have any kind of disaster management plan in place in case of any emergency, a fire safety expert has warned. “Local emergency services bylaws state that home owners or businesses cannot store more than 100 kg of LPG gas without an appropriate certificate. Bulk gas storage such as for industrial businesses requires specific approval from the local authorities on submission of a rational design,” said Michael van Niekerk, CEO of ASP Fire. The obvious danger of dealing with gas is any kind of leak due to faulty equipment or mishandling and incorrect storage. If the gas leak is sufficiently large, a highly-flammable gas cloud will form. Largely invisible, this gas cloud will ignite in the presence of an ignition source, resulting in a major explosion. “This is where the disaster management plan comes into play. It is incumbent upon you as business owner to inform your neighbours of the unfolding emergency, and to instruct them to turn off all electrical appliances. This will limit the ignition sources that can set off a spreading gas cloud, and thereby prevent the propagation of any fire,” Van Niekerk said. In the event of a piped gas leak, the best approach is to simply turn off all valves. Here it is important to note that it is mandatory for all bulk gas installations to have two shut-off valves, one within the hazardous zone and the other just outside it. With regard to gas cylinders, the best approach to contain any

gas leak is simply to turn off the regulator – even if a fire has already broken out. “In the event of a robust fire spreading out from a gas cylinder as the source, the quick-thinking owner can prevent a potential catastrophe by simply immersing the cylinder in a swimming pool, tank or sink.” Another critical safety factor in terms of gas cylinders is to protect these from any external heat sources. “Pressure and temperature have a direct relationship in terms of the fixed volume. As the temperature increases, so does the pressure. And if you exceed the maximum temperature that the cylinder is rated for, there will be an explosion.” Van Niekerk said there were various ways businesses can identify potential gas hazards. “Frequent checks are necessary to identify any potential ignition sources. Components corrode, become loose and perish. You need to inspect these ignition sources regularly and service or replace accordingly.” He recommend that business owners engage the services of a fire-risk consultant to conduct an audit of the premises to identify potential risk factors. Appropriate handling practices for gas cylinders are: Storing and transporting them upright with a sealed protective cap to prevent any damage and potential leaks in the event that they may fall over; securing them securely in a suitably demarcated and protected area; and having the necessary warning and information signage in place. Flammable gasses must also be separated from oxidising gases. Enquiry no: 19

Carmaker close to landfill free goal

W

ith yet another facility being declared landfill free, General Motors South Africa (GMSA) is moving closer to the company’s global environmental goal to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2020 GMSA’s Vehicle Conversion and Distribution Centre (VCDC), situated in Aloes about 20km from the manufacturing plant in Port Elizabeth, is GM’s second non-manufacturing facility worldwide to achieve landfill free status this year. This accolade follows hot on the heels of the Parts Distribution Centre situated in the Coega Industrial Development Zone which was declared landfill free in May.

These two non-manufacturing facilities were the first of GM’s global sites to achieve this milestone year to date. GM now has 134 landfill free operations around the world. GMSA’s Environmental Group Manager, Ncedisa Mzuzu, said this achievement came after years of planning and hard work. “We started off by developing a roadmap for the site. This included waste profiling, tracking and changing processes like changing car protectors used for shipping from non-recyclable to recyclable materials,” she explained. The 31-hectare state-of-the-art centre was opened in 2008 and has the capacity to store

more than 8000 vehicles. In addition to storage, the servicing of company fleet vehicles and the distribution of vehicles to dealers across the country are facilitated from the site. The types of waste generated at VCDC include oils and service related material, paint and solvents from the on-site paint shop, scrap parts, tyres and batteries, packaging and shipping waste, fluorescent tubes and food waste from the canteen. No more waste to landfill sites means that most of the waste generated is being re-used or recycled, Mzuzu said. “We have made significant efforts in recent years to mitigate the impact of the business on the environment. It is our goal to be landfill free at all of our GM sites by 2020.” The two manufacturing plants are next. “Both facilities have shown signs of compliance in recent months, with Struandale and Kemspton Road having had no waste sent to landfill sites over the last two to three months respectively.” South Africa’s popular sub-one ton, the Chevrolet Utility and the Isuzu KB are manufactured at the Struandale plant, while Isuzu trucks are built at the Kempston Road plant. ew mega housing projects announced by the government stand to boost the concrete products manufacturing industry, which has seen many cement suppliers drop their prices due to decreased demand and excess cement supply. That's according to PMSA MD Walter Ebeling, who said the government’s launch of 101 ‘catalytic projects’ in terms of its Breaking New Ground housing policy are likely to reduce any imminent retrenchments from the concrete products sector. Current housing projects underway are too small and dispersed to make a significant impact, whereas the latest tranche of 101 projects, of which 94 are ready for implementation, range across all nine provinces, with a combined value of over R300 billion. They are expected to generate 20 000 additional jobs in the construction and ancillary industries. “With a stagnant growth rate, these housing mega projects will generate much needed demand side stimulus in the local economy which, in turn, drives supply from the private sector and new investment into capital equipment,” Ebeling said. Concrete is used in all aspects of a housing development project, from roof tiles to bricks, blocks, paving for roads, concrete pipework for stormwater and sewage, road kerbstones and drainage, foundations and concrete floor slabs. Having celebrated its 40th anniversary with the unveiling of a new range of products and technology at Totally Concrete 2016, PMSA boasts a comprehensive range of equipment

that can be used to manufacture every one of these products used in housing developments. “The equipment supplied by PMSA comes with comprehensive training, commissioning and support. This means the customer has confidence of full back-up. We are locallybased, but with countrywide support, and three branches in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town,” Ebeling said. Pan Mixers South Africa (PMSA) is a leading manufacturer of a wide range of concrete block, brick and paving machinery, turbine and counter-current pan mixers and batching plants for the concrete, refractory and ceramic industries. PMSA has been servicing the needs of local and overseas customers since 1976. PMSA brick-making machinery produces two million bricks a day in the Johannesburg area alone. Enquiry no: 28

he entity responsible for promoting productivity in South Africa, Productivity SA, held an awards ceremony to recognise the winners of the Eastern Cape Regional Productivity Awards in Port Elizabeth recently. The awards are aimed at recognising organisations making significant contributions

towards making South Africa a productive country. Through awarding these organisations, which are from the private, emerging and co-operative sectors, Productivity SA aims to encourage other organisations to strive to be productive and globally competitive. The CEO of Productivity SA, Mothunye

Mothiba, said that as the country’s fight against unemployment intensifies, it was through organisations like the finalists that poverty could be holistically tackled. “The aim and objectives of Productivity SA are to improve productivity and competitiveness in the workplace throughout South Africa. These awards seek to recognise individuals, organisations and communities for their contributions to building South Africa’s productive capacity,” Mothiba said. The regional awards provide a platform to inspire a competitive and productive South Africa. Mothiba said productivity improvement was considered the most effective way of ensuring ongoing competitiveness, economic growth and, consequently, more wealth for all. “All South Africans, not only workers in the formal sector, are central to this process. South Africa currently faces major challenges, for example on how to create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty.

“If South Africa is to reduce unemployment and poverty, and increase its economic growth, emphasis should be on developing productive capacity in all sectors of the economy.” Productivity SA has developed various tools and models that includes measurement tools that determine to what extent an organisation’s financial performance is influenced by price recovery and productivity. The National Productivity Awards were launched in 1979 and since then have grown to become one of the most prestigious awards for business endeavors in South Africa. The Eastern Cape Regional Productivity Awards winners are: • Emerging Sector: LM Titi Shuttle Services. • Cooperative Sector: Sihlangene Co-operative • Corporate Sector: Eberspächer South Africa. Local company takes first steps

A

on road to driverless trucks

slew of new technologies is about to disrupt the trucking industry, bringing entirely new business models in freight movement, and local company Barloworld Transport says it’s poised to put them to good use. The diversified transport group’s IT Executive, Jonathan Spencer, said the disruptors included truck platooning, integration of devices, central data analysis and mobility, all of which would, eventually, pave the way to an era of driverless trucks. Truck platooning, which has the potential to make transport cleaner, safer and more efficient, is the linking of two or three trucks in a convoy. These vehicles closely follow each other at a set distance by using connectivity technology and automated driving support systems. The trucks constantly maintain a communication link that allows them to share data and action. By communicating with each other, the trucks automatically match each other’s speed and braking. This means that the reaction time for braking is reduced to zero, which in turn improves safety and helps minimizes traffic congestion. Also, when trucks can drive closely behind one another, fuel economy is improved as a result of the reduction in drag. Drag accounts for up to 25% of a truck’s total fuel consumption, and the closer the trucks drive to each other, the greater the fuel-saving potential. “Platooning is also a cost-saver as the trucks drive close together at a constant speed. This means lower fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions,” said Spencer, adding platooning is the first phase of automation which will eventually see driverless trucks. He said integration of devices and central data analysis would drive down the cost of

transport by using the latest information technologies to improve efficiency and lower operational costs. Spencer said the powerful data collated would help to not only improve operational efficiencies and performance but also help fleets generate more revenue. “Mobility will see truck drivers having the power to communicate more than ever before and also make it possible for the gathering of operational data in almost real time, which is something that has never really been available from a driver centric point of view. “Anyone can buy a truck and move stuff around. The differentiator is if it’s done smartly and efficiently and in a way that adds value to the customer and makes our roads safer. “The more information and automation you have leads to better and safer decisions about how the truck should run, provided that someone is actively using the data that is produced.” Spencer was quick to add that one of the biggest pitfalls was “having all the toys and not using the data wisely”. He said Barloworld Transport had taken a considered decision to warmly embrace the disruptors as their outcomes were aligned to the company’s critical priorities including teamwork, commitment, excellence, integrity and sustainability. “It is vital to constantly evolve in the trucking environment. The challenge is not to chase every piece of technology that comes up but to be selective and leverage all the benefits through integration.” Spencer said awareness, education and training would be critical to converting the mindsets of technology-averse truckers.

R15m upgrade for flagship Mthatha filling station complex C altex Eastern Cape Marketer (CECM), the largest ChevronCaltex franchisor in Africa, has unveiled its single biggest capital investment to date with the recent launch of the Northcrest Mthatha complex serving the busy north-east gateway on the N2 to KwaZuluNatal. The R15-million upgrade and relaunch of the flagship service station – incorporating the Eastern Cape’s largest FreshStop development and a range of value-added services for travellers and the Mthatha community – re-affirms the 100% Eastern Cape-owned company’s commitment to investment, job creation and service to motorists in the province, CEO Clive Berlyn said. The launch had financial as well as symbolic significance for Berlyn and CECM, as the site’s history is closely interwoven with that of the company, which last year celebrated a decade in business.

In that time, the company has almost trebled in size – from an initial investment of R10 million in 34 sites, to 101 sites today and cumulative investment of over R300 million in new sites and ongoing refurbishment of existing sites. Both Berlyn and his founding partner in CECM, the late Richard Ndungane, had operated Northcrest Mthatha at separate times since it was first built in 1985. Ndungane first entered the fuel business when he bought the business from Berlyn in 1996, and in turn transferred it to his wife when the two men entered into partnership to bid for the first Caltex master franchise in a trial of Chevron’s “branded marketer” model. “It was always our intention to knock down and completely remodel this site into a flagship for our company in the Eastern Cape. With the involvement of Novate as site operator we are very proud to see

this dream become a reality today,” Berlyn said. Novate invested a further R4,5 million in equipment to ensure the smooth and safe running of the site. Completing the chain of Caltex service stations along the N2 in the Eastern Cape, the all-new Northcrest Mthatha can serve 12 vehicles at a time. In addition to FreshStop – a concept pioneered by Chevron with Fruit & Veg City – the complex offers Crispy Chicken and Hooked on Fish take-out and a Seattle coffee bar. Famous Brands is investing an additional R4,5 million by adding a Steers outlet on site which is scheduled to open in December. “We are very much a proudly Eastern Cape company, and proud to say that more than 95% of our non-fuel expenditure stays in the province. We believe that this province has huge growth potential which needs to be unlocked through investment, creating sustainable value and

meaningful employment,” Berlyn said. The launch in his hometown of Mthatha also had symbolic significance for Chevron South Africa’s general manager for sales and marketing support, Qaqambile Price Northcrest Caltex service attendant, Akwaba Njokweni. xpress parcels company DPD Laser has rolled out what it says is the most advanced mobile technology platform of any SA express service in its Dawn Wing and Time Freight businesses. According to the company, the platform offers customers unprecedented real-time visibility and control of their deliveries. It said the rollout was a key part of its strategy to offer market leading delivery services for both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) clients, and in doing so become the undisputed market leader in e-commerce delivery. “The e-commerce market in South Africa is set for massive growth but has been poorly served by delivery companies. In all markets globally where e-commerce has grown exponentially, reliable and convenient delivery solutions have been critical enablers to that growth” said CEO Iain Johnson. “Our technology development provides our customers, and their customers, a high-quality service which finally gives them the level of control they’ve wanted over their deliveries”. DPD Laser’s new ‘Follow My Parcel’ platform alerts customers to their expected delivery time and confirms their delivery address, both of which can be changed by the recipient at any point during

the delivery day. It also provides details of the specific driver and delivery vehicle, a useful feature in a security conscious environment. The platform then alerts the recipient by SMS when their delivery is next en-route and the recipient can track the driver on a live map as they make the delivery. DPD Laser said the end result is a more convenient and personalised delivery experience which has already improved first time delivery success rates and resulted in significantly less customer frustration. “This strategy of building a hybrid B2B/B2C delivery network, underpinned by technology, great service, and an obsession with the customer experience is nothing new to us as it’s what our sister companies across DPDgroup have been successfully building for many years,” Johnson said. ED light towers are an ideal solution for multiple applications across diverse industries including mining, construction, road-making and outdoor events where safety during around-the-clock operations remains a priority. Atlas Copco has invested intensive research into the development of ita industry-leading range of efficient light towers. “Our pioneering LED technology addresses our customers’ efficiency and safety requirements and provides extensive operational savings for the end-user,” said Portable Energy Business Line Manager, David Stanford. Incorporating the latest LED technology,

dedicated power packs protect against underloading of the engine which leads to optimised power output and improved efficiency while also improving the lifetime of the LED models’ power pack module. The LED light towers feature a unique, fully directional optic lens. This special optic design, which is particularly suited for construction and mining applications, maximises practical light coverage while minimising ‘dark spots’. The result is efficient and effective job site lighting all rolled into one. A single LED light tower can illuminate up to 5 000m² with an average brightness of 20 lux (model dependent). Depending on the model, the LED light towers can operate for some 260 hours between refueling while impressively consuming less than 0.5 litres of fuel per hour. This, said Stanford, translates to a remarkable 70% reduction in CO2 emissions. “If you add the fact that the LED HiLight models minimise the need for regular bulb

replacements which is typical in many construction environments, then it is difficult to beat these units when it comes to end-user savings and a green footprint.” Designed for both portability and performance, the heavy-duty LED floodlights’ high ingress protection (IP) and impact protection (IK) ratings ensure higher durability without any deterioration in lux level while providing instant light. The HiLight range which comprises a full range of LED and Metal Halide models has been expanded to seven models in total. Ideal for large construction sites where workers are constantly on the move, the premium HiLight H5+ demonstrates exceptional fuel consumption. With 4 LED lamps each projecting 350W of light, the unit can illuminate

an area of 5 000m², offering the best luminosity. Both the H5+ and the B5+ are perfect for mass transportation and easy installation thanks to their compact dimensions. What is more, the HiLight V4 and V5+ models boast the most compact footprint within the manual mast segment, enabling users to load up to 20 units per truck. The models also integrate a number of important features, including a spillage free frame and the renowned HardHat polyethylene canopy, which is extremely durable under harsh conditions and protects against corrosion. Completing the newly expanded range, the new electric HiLight E2 and E3+ demonstrate exceptional plug-and-light capabilities. Users simply Enquiry no: 37 connect to any power source.

egrand is offering a new generation of programmable time switch technology, the AlphaRex and MicroRex time switches, which it says allow for precise temperature control in domestic, commercial and industrial environments. “Legrand’s Rex time switches, with analogue and digital dials, are ideally suited for OEM’s and panel builders who can pre-programme the time switch during installation. At a later stage when the panel or product is connected to power, all the end-user has to do is set the real time,” said Marius Labuschagne, Legrand’s technical and solutions manager. “These programmable time switches ensure high clock precision, optimum reliability, maximum safety and enhanced aesthetics.

“In temperature control applications, these devices are used to switch an electric circuit on or off at selected times during a preprogrammed time period. These time switches also have an automatic return facility and a permanent forced switching on or off override control. “Typical applications for time switches in heating and cooling installations include water heaters, air conditioners, heating and ventilation systems and swimming pool heaters,” Labuschagne said. AlphaRex³ programmable time switches have a user-friendly standardised text-guided programming facility, with a high resolution digital display and backlight. There is a standard, single data key for all devices in this range to allow quick and easy transfer of programmes

to other time switches and for creating back up copies. These time switches are available with standard and multiple functions, with a daily or weekly programme facility and a clock working reserve of six years. Programming with clock precision to the second is controlled directly on the time switch, or outside the distribution board using a PC and Legrand’s AlphaSoft programming software. Other features include an EEPROM memory which prevents settings being lost and the facility to programme the clock prior to despatch. Once the unit has been programmed, the information will remain installed even if the switch is not connected to power. The battery can be removed without having to uninstall the time switch from the distribution board. This range is available nationally from Legrand’s distributor network and a technical advisory and back-up service is also offered. Enquiry no: 38

trial adhesives, and joint sealants. A.b.e. has over the past few years experienced particularly strong demand for VIP Polyurea systems and the company’s dedicated Polyurea division has successfully completed several high-profile projects. Abendroth said the QuickFloor system is based on polyaspartic technology, which is derived from Polyurea principles. “The VIP QuickFloor system primarily consists of VIP QuickFloor 100, an eco-friendly industrial grade, high-build base coat which is solvent- and VOC-free; and VIP QuickFloor 500, an exceptionally quick-acting, rollerapplied aliphatic top coat which provides excellent adhesion to concrete substrates,” he said. “QuickFloor 100 base coat is typically used as a moisture barrier base coat on concrete substrates, or as the primary and secondary base coat for industrial flooring. The product bonds exceptionally well with dry or damp concrete, and has strong resistance to abrasion and chemicals.” He said it remains stable even in high temperature variations and humidity. “The elastomeric QuickFloor 500 top coat cures in an astounding 30 to 60 minutes to a very clear finish and is also environmentally friendly with low viscosity and odour. The seamless, flexible coating provides superior chemical resistance compared with solventdriven epoxies and urethanes.” Abendroth described the coating as ideal for harsh marine conditions with strong resistance to chlorine and saltwater. “That is why it was recently specified for the Cape Town Aquarium’s new Predator Tank.” He said the QuickFloor system – which can also be squeegee, or brush/roller-applied - is ideal for new floors or flooring renovation at aircraft hangars, warehouses, restaurants and kitchens, shopping malls, hospitals, and car park decks. A.b.e. is expecting strong demand for the new system particularly as its remarkably quick curing time is vital for industries requiring rapid reuse of factory or warehouse floors, and retail outlets that cannot afford trading Enquiry no: 39 disruptions,” Abendroth said.

acker Neuson has made a difference to my business and I plan to replace my entire fleet of machines with Wacker Neuson equipment in the very near future,” said Leon van Vuuren, owner of Floor Maintenance Equipment Services. Based in Benoni, Gauteng, Floor Maintenance Equipment Services has been trading in South Africa for 21 years. In addition to repairs and maintenance on industrial cleaning equipment, the company also rents out compact equipment to amongst others, the construction, airport, road building and food and beverage industries. Van Vuuren was extremely impressed with his first 701 skid

A

steer loader that he purchased from Wacker Neuson a little over a year ago. “When I later needed to upgrade to a bigger model to meet different application requirements, I had no hesitation in deciding to buy the larger Wacker Neuson 901 skid steer loader and I’ve never looked back! These machines deliver top quality power, are exceptionally operatorfriendly and easy to manoeuvre, features which my customers truly appreciate.” Using many different attachments such as milling tools, augers, forks, buckets and breakers on his skid steer loaders, van Vuuren appreciates the fact that both machines can conveniently take virtually any attachment, including hi-flow or standard-flow. “This remarkable versatility saves me a lot of time and money,” he adds. When it comes to after-sales service, he praised the company’s sales team and Regional President for Sub-Saharan Africa, Eugene Brown, for their helpful and hands-on approach. “I will always highly recommend Wacker Neuson to anyone."

Green building buy-in now imperative, say analysts

S

ustainable development specialists and property analysts have urged all South African businesses and developers to embrace the reality of “green building” as government actively pursues legislation to enforce more sustainable construction. Sustainable building academic at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Chris Allen, advises that government was in the process of developing a green building framework aligned to the Green Building Council of South Africa’s green star rating system, in order to reap the benefits in government buildings throughout the country, namely more efficient operation leading to lower running costs. On the back of these moves to strengthen South Africa’s already significant switch to more sustainable buildings in the wake of the energy crisis of 2008, government is providing both the carrot and stick to get the private sector to follow suit.

and browsing is easy via a joystick on the keypad. The wireless probes are supplied with a multifunction key to allow measurement and settings. A large choice of probes are available such as vanes with diameters of 14 mm, 70 mm and 100 mm, high resistance gooseneck-shaped hotwire, CO/ CO2, multifunction, high temperature hygrometry, RTD, thermocouple etc. The interchangeable measuring modules are individually calibrated and are automatically recognized by the instrument via the Smart-plus system.

“You’re going to see the private sector adopting green building practices more vigorously, with the government starting to request energy performance certificates for their buildings this year, with the aim of asking the same of commercial buildings from 2018 and the private sector from 2020,” said Allen. Allen recently spoke on the topic at a regional SA Property Owners Association (Sapoa) meeting in Port Elizabeth. He was joined by sustainable solutions experts Brian van Niekerk, managing director of sustainable solutions company Rhino Group, and Heather McEwan, MD of Rhino Group company Rhino Lighting. Allen, a lecturer in building science within the department of construction management at NMMU, said: “The real benefits to green buildings start to accrue when it comes to their running costs. The commercial reality is that their running costs are 30 to 40% down on conventional developments. “Added to this is a similar improve-

ment in the productivity levels of people working in green buildings as a result of increased natural lighting levels, ventilation rates and even how those commuting to these buildings get there.” Last year a research report by Allen and fellow NMMU academic Katharina Crafford based on Rhino Group’s showcase House Rhino – which is an energy-plus home located at Crossways Farm Village outside Port Elizabeth – was hailed at a global conference in the UK. African Energy-Plus construction: A case study of House Rhino received the Chair’s Award at the Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society international conference at Leeds Beckett University. “Due to the energy crisis that South Africa has experienced over the past seven years, challenging preconceived ideas by creating attractive, affordable, energy efficient buildings has become critical."

Packaged treatment plant brings clean water to villages

V

eolia Water Technologies South Africa recently supplied an energy-efficient, low maintenance packaged water treatment plant to supply an additional five megalitres per day (MLD) of potable water to two villages in Limpopo, South Africa. Veolia was contracted by Lepelle Northern Water Board to augment its existing water supply from its Politsi water treatment plant. Although producing 5.5 MLD highquality potable water from turbid raw water, Politsi was unable to meet the growing water demands of the surrounding communities. In addition, the plant was facing drastic onsite space-constraints and unable to expand its existing treatment plant by conventional process. Veolia, therefore, was contracted to design and build a fully-containerised water treatment plant that is capable of supplying 5 MLD of potable water, increasing the overall water supply to 10.5 MLD for the villages. To do this, Veolia utilised its triedand-tested prefabricated clarification and pressurised filtration technology together with a range of chemicals. “In this process, raw water is fed

Filter bank for pressurised sand filtration process through a pump station (by others) to the packaged clarifiers where it’s dosed with polymers and coagulants to enhance flocculation and coagulation,” said Thabo Mogadima, Business Development Manager, Municipal, Veolia South Africa. This chemically-dosed raw water will enter the clarifier, where the floc

particles, which resulted from the flocculation and coagulation process, will settle in the clarifier. “This is followed by pressurised sand filtration process and finally is disinfected using hydrochloride acid,” said Mogadima. In addition, Veolia will utilise pH correction chemicals to correctly adjust the pH level to comply with SANS 241-1:2011. This treated water is then combined with the 5.5 MLD produced from the existing plant in an underground reservoir from where it’s pumped to the villages. “Our packaged plants offer rugged, low maintenance performance and are particularly suited to remote locations such as this one. “The low footprint plant was also pre-assembled at our Sebenza workshop and simply needed to be mounted on a concrete slab, ‘plugged in and switched on’ when it arrived on site in February this year.” Understanding the importance of community involvement in addressing municipal issues, Veolia will also conduct onsite training for the municipality as well as offer 12-month ‘on-call’ response time to problems that may arise at the plant. ager Sebastian Johannes said the app was a mobile solution for documenting temperature measurements. It allows the user to share the generated data via email or store it in the app. “It boasts a measurement point to view all corresponding measurements, a measurements tab for number of measurements and surface temperature and a value list for importing measurements,” Johannes said. “It includes colours to indicate the status according to the measurement mode chosen on the GIS 1000 C, while the connection status at the top indicates if it is connected via Bluetooth.” The tool also features a Sketch & Measure function, which allows the user to take a picture, set measurement points in the picture and add temperature measurements from the GIS 1000 C, using Bluetooth. The corresponding data, such as the dew point and ambient temperature, is then shown for each measurement point, according to the measurement mode chosen in the device.

According to Johannes, the user can share their project as a PDF document via email. “The user can create a new or open an existing project, sort and delete projects, add or edit project information, search for projects, files and notes with the search function.” In order for the wizard in the application to be connected, the user must activate Bluetooth on both devices, select the GIS 1000 C device and finally make a sample measurement. The GIS measure&document app is available as a free download for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store respectively. Enquiry no: 45

Trucker gets a lift from ISO certification G

Goscor Lift Truck Company has been ISO 9001:2008 certified - here Darryl Shafto, Goscor Lift truck Company MD with Heather Morgan, ISO Co-ordinator.

oscor Lift Truck Company's (GLTC) recent ISO 9001:2008 certification is confirmation of the company’s high levels of service, efficiency and product quality, MD, Darryl Shafto said. “It’s all very well believing that the way you run your business is excellent, but the fact is that until this has been objectively tested against global best practice you cannot be sure that there are not things missing from your strategy and implementation,” said Shafto. “Having been certified after being audited and evaluated by a renowned, international certification authority according to the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 standard we now know that our belief in our own quality is more than justified.”

The ISO 9001:2008 standard has been in place for over a decade and is used by both customers and companies as a method of controlling their quality. The standard provides a framework to manage one’s business and to ensure a philosophy of continuous improvement in all aspects of the business. Shafto said one of the important aspects of ISO 9001:2008 was that it is externally assessed on an ongoing basis. “This leaves no room for complacency. Our all-round quality levels are excellent now and we must ensure that we not only maintain these levels but that we improve on them on a continuous basis.” Shafto said that the entire company nationwide pulled together to make the certification happen. “The fact, though, is that this v company works hard as a

cohesive unit all the time. It’s not that we had to do things differently in order to achieve the ISO recognition, but rather that this recognition reflects the way Goscor Lift Truck conducts its business 24/7.” He said the cerification would definitely be good for business. “Many potential customers ask for an ISO certificate to be included in the tender pack and we now will be able to give them that extra, objective security. “Also it is not that common for companies like ours to be ISO certified and this recognition will be another important arrow in our quiver in our objective to be the most competitive warehouse equipment supplier on the continent.”

Fibreglass a grate option for corrosive conditions

F

ibreglass floor grating offers excellent corrosion resistance coupled with increased strength, long life and enhanced safety benefits. The Mentis range complements its well-known steel floor grating products and, according to the company, is suitable for use in extremely corrosive conditions. “The fibreglass construction of this grating allows the product to be installed in applications where corrosion is a factor. The product will not rust and does not need painting or coating, making it virtually maintenance free,” said Elaine van Rooyen, marketing manager at Andrew Mentis. By optimising the glass fibre content not only is it corrosion resistant, but the load bearing capacity is optimised. Additionally, the one-piece moulded construction results in enhanced strength in both directions and eradicates loosening of the product with repeated use. During construction of the grating, the bars are tapered towards the bot-

tom as this prevents build-up of debris and assists with cleaning. “In the manufacturing process, the ratio of resin to glass is considered critical as this determines the final quality and strength of the product. We have implemented manufacturing procedures that ensure complete consistency of this ratio throughout each panel,” Van Rooyen said. “Fibreglass floor grating is simple to install and requires no welding or end banding. Structural integrity is enhanced as the corners on the inside of the square opening are moulded to a small radius. A benefit is that the grating can be easily cut and installed using hand tools, saving on costs and time.”

Fibreglass is lightweight which makes it easier to install large sections. It is also easy to handle and remove for maintenance purposes when needed. The product is extremely cost effective as it is not affected by the sun, and does not become brittle and break. Because fibreglass is non-conductive, the surface will not be affected by fluctuations in temperature and it provides electrical insulation, making it suitable for all applications. The non-slip, fire retardant surface finish provides excellent slip resistance in both directions for enhanced safety levels on site. “Unique cuttings channels are spaced at 150 mm intervals to provide efficient utilisation when custom fitting treads into stairways. These channels also ensure that all standard stair tread widths are terminated with closed ends. The stair tread apertures are 150 x 38 mm, meaning that support is only needed on two sides,” Van Rooyen said.

One could argue that nowadays you can access the internet in the comfort of your own home through your mobile phone. However, data does not come cheap. Just 100MB worth of data if used sparingly, could last you one to two days. If one is to use it for job hunting or searching for skills development opportunities, your 100MB worth of data will be non-existent in an hour or two. Therefore, if lack of access to ICT infrastructure in communities is the difference between a young person accessing or missing out on an opportunity then, alternative supporting strategies need to be implemented while all relevant role players work on a plan to make ICT services accessible to all. Standards under the spotlight at pipes conference

P

roduct quality and standards came under the spotlight at the PIPES X Conference hosted by the Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers Association (SAPPMA) in Midrand recently. Welcoming the more than 200 delegates, SAPPMA Chief Executive Officer Jan Venter said their annual conference had become firmly established in the industry’s events calendar, with the support of main sponsors DPI Plastics, Rare Plastics, Marley Pipe Systems and PipeFlo. “The plastic pipe industry is arguably one of the most important industries in South Africa’s infrastructure as water distribution, waste disposal, irrigation, telecommunications and a myriad of other services rely on pipe infrastructures to work effectively,” Venter said. Through hosting the conferences and other activities, SAPPMA had proven they was heavily invested in the well-being of the local plas-

O

tics pipe industry, especially where standards and technical specifications were concerned, he said. “We have already exposed more than 1 500 delegates to close to 200 technical papers since the first time we hosted our PIPES conference. This year we are privileged to have 17 experts in their field sharing their expertise with you coming from as far afield as Australia, Spain, Germany and the Middle East.” Keynote speakers at this year’s conference were Corné Krige - ex-Springbok rugby captain who led the team to the World Cup in 2003 – who shared some of the life lessons he had learned about effective leadership in sport and business, followed by Ralph Triebel of LHA Management Consultants who gave an overview of the trends in the local pipe market. Many of the papers presented on the day reflected the current problems South African industries face in regards to the accreditation

of national standards. “Quality in general and long-term product quality, in particular, is one of our cornerstones. Considering that approximately 40 000 km of plastic pipe is manufactured annually in South Africa, we are doing everything in our power to prevent a general deterioration of plastic piping systems in our country. SAPPMA has been on the forefront of this situation and is probably furthers down the road to facilitate alternative mechanisms.” Venter also announced that the PPCA (Plastic Pipes Conference Association) had agreed to sponsor 10 presenters from this year’s conference in Berlin to present their papers at next year’s PIPES XI conference, thereby giving the event an even greater international footprint. He encouraged delegates to work together and do everything in their power to ensure the Enquiry no: 50 future of the industry.

Sika SA recently sponsored all the flyers and posters in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa for the Operation Smile campaign held throughout the Eastern Cape. The awareness campaign in June included the Butterworth Hospital, East London Department of Health, Eastern Cape NGO Coalition, as well as venues in Port Elizabeth, King Williams Town, and Mthata. The charity recently, held the #Operation45 Corporate Cup soccer tournament to raise

funds. Sika’s Joburg branch gathered willing staff members to build two teams, who gave the other corporate companies’ teams a good run around the field at the Randburg Sports Enquiry no: 51 Complex.

Partnership with local farmers feed Ugie's vulnerable citizens

T

he most vulnerable citizens of Ugie in the rural outback of the Eastern Cape are set to benefit from a newly-launched feeding scheme – the latest addition to a range of interventions through which leading diversified timber company PG Bison provides support to its community. The company announced a partnership with Judea Hope this week, through which it will start early childhood development (ECD) centres. These will be used as hubs to distribute food parcels but also to train community members as child carers. This means that PG Bison now supports a broad range of sectors of society in Ugie – from small children, learners at school, students and local entrepreneurs, to the elderly – in a community where more than 70% of adult residents are unemployed. Judea Hope has already distributed 20 000 meals to Ugie residents in the past two months alone. The meals consist of rice, soy, a dehydrated soup mix, flavouring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. The organisation distributed the meals through crèches and ECD centres in the Ugie area with which they have connected. “We realised that if we wanted the feeding scheme to be sustainable, we needed to partner with organisations with strong track records. We therefore set up a variety of meetings with Judea Hope, the Ugie Farmers' Association (UGA) and other service providers,” says Pieter de Wet, General Manager of the PG Bison Plant in Ugie. In addition to assisting with the meals, PG Bison will provide stoves, fridges, chairs and tables to the project. “This feeding scheme would not be possible without the generous assistance of the local farmers who are supplying the veggies,” says De Wet. Farmers have also made a hall available for use as a food processing facility. De Wet says the company is aiming to assist Ugie's most vulnerable citizens – children and the elderly. “We are also pleased that Judea Hope will build strong relationships through local crèches and churches to distribute the food.” Dr. Louis Blom, President of Judea Hope, says his organisation specialises in building community networks, and using these to provide food, training opportunities and other services. The organisation has an existing national footprint. He says one of the additional benefits of a feeding scheme is often a reduction in crime. “Many local volunteers were involved in the launch project and helped with our first food Enquiry no: 52 packing event."
