Local company turns waste into water

Port Elizabeth-based company is piloting a unique product to South Africa which organically disposes of waste, and has a rather handy by-product – wash water. Although eco-solutions company Rhino Water is also busy with the organic clean-up of the city’s polluted North End Lake, this new project sees them piloting an organic solution for ridding abattoirs of animal waste – both saving and creating wash water in the process. The severe drought throughout South Africa has seen the country’s 460 red meat abattoirs inundated with animals for the slaughter as farmers battle water shortages. The severe water shortages have put red meat abattoirs under pressure in terms of the stringent standards for cleanliness and waste disposal laid down by the Meat Safety Act and individual municipal by-laws for waste water management. Red Meat Abattoir Association spokesman Dr Gerhard Neethling said the more effective use of water and the re-use of grey water had become a priority for the industry. Neethling said the methods of waste disposal approved by the red

meat regulations were not deemed acceptable according to newer waste management regulations and guidelines provided by the national Department of Environmental Affairs. “There have been challenges with regard to implementation,” said Neethling. “The association is currently engaging with the department to investigate and approve alternative options for the industry.” Rhino Water’s new waste treatment solution, in partnership with organic solutions company Blue Planet South Africa, sees organic waste treatment plants set up on site, geared specifically to the red meat and poultry industry. According to Rhino Water’s managing director Sarel Bam, few abattoirs were able to comply with current regulations when it came to slaughter waste, with many incurring penalties for effluent ending up in sewers or dumped in the bush. “We have brought a unique, organic solution to SA which consists of a packaged plant to treat blood, organic waste and grey and black water to municipal discharge and irrigation standards. A by-product of this process is wash water.” Bam said abattoirs required speEnrico Vermaak (Centre), Jeanine Horn-Erasmus (Business Development Executive) and Shaun Philander(Junior Engineer)

n Eastern Cape technology start-up company is revolutionising electronic waste disposal and recycling in South Africa through a mobile unit dubbed the “e-shredder,” which will help private

and public sector organisations to discard electronic products that have become unwanted, non-working or obsolete. Once e-waste has been sanitised, the recycled components will be upcycled into consumer goods which in turn will provide job creation in arts and crafts sectors.

cific technologies to treat a wide range of waste categories unique to the industry. “Challenges include high levels of ammonia, iron, nitrates and coliforms in the waste water, as well as the slow decomposition rate of animal waste,” said Bam. He said the plant itself was modular in design, with components premanufactured for easy installation. The added benefit of the on-site packaged plant was that wash water could be extracted from the treated

animal waste and used for washing floors and other on-site cleansing requirements. Partnering with environmental company Cool Technology, who were responsible for the treatment plant design, has given Rhino Water access to the imported BluePlanet range of AquaClean bacterial products. Cool Technology has since become a 50 per cent shareholder in the newly established BluePlanet Continued on page two South Africa,

eWaste Technologies Africa (eTA), a client of the Seda Nelson Mandela Bay ICT Incubator (SNII) in Port Elizabeth, has a zero-tolandfill policy, which means the company is committed to finding ways for e-waste to be reused, recycled or repurposed. In South Africa, e-waste makes up 5% to 8% of municipal solid waste. E-waste is also growing at a rate three times faster than any other waste forms in the country. eWaste Technologies Africa recently repurposed a hard drive shredder into a mobile waste disposal unit. This means it can be

transported to a client’s premises where it will provide secure hard drive destruction service. The company will offer clients enhanced data sanitation services by ensuring that information on devices is rendered completely inaccessible even before the equipment in which it is stored is recycled or disposed of. “We scrub all hard drives, ensuring our methods are compliant with the South African National Intelligence Agency requirements,” said Vermaak. “The mobile ewaste shredder will be taken to a Continued on page three

Finding hope in collaboration and partnerships bay view

Kevin Hustler

W

ith the dust settled on the announcement of the Provincial and National Budgets for this year, we are left with little hope with regards to concrete examples of job creation and clarity on catalytic projects for the Eastern Cape and Nelson Mandela Bay in particular. However, government’s general call for collaboration with business is exactly what we need to turn the tide around. As the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber we have advocated for some time to create partnership platforms and collaboration between government, private sector and civil society. Indeed we believe that to overcome economic challenges, all parties need to create and engage in opportunities that will seek to find innovative solutions to

grow the economy. This adaptation – for both business and government – needs to be done with a greater measure of transparency and sense of urgency to create more jobs and growth in the economy of the country. Although in future we may have to reposition ourselves on certain catalytic projects, we are confident on the oceans economy and what this could mean for us as a region. The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber firmly believes that Operation Phakisa is a huge opportunity for our city and that we need to unlock our ocean’s economy as Port Elizabethans. Last year (2015) Environmental Affairs Minister Edwa Molewa set aside a decision to grant environmental authorization for the development of a proposed fish farm off Hobie Beach. Along with other stakeholders in Nelson Mandela Bay, the Business Chamber had taken a strong stance against the fish farm, based on its location and the

effect it could have particularly on the beachfront tourism industry. The extended value of tourism in Nelson Mandela Bay runs to an estimated R18-billion per year, and as organised business we lobbied against the location of the fish farm, to protect the beachfront and city’s economy. While the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is a strong advocate for aquaculture as part of Operation Phakisa’s development of the oceans economy, we would not like to see one industry flourish at the cost of another. Another suitable location in Nelson Mandela Bay should be found for the continued pursuit of aquaculture, such as the Coega Industrial Development Zone. There is already a tremendous commitment from Transnet on port and rail infrastructure in the province and we look forward to accelerated private sector participation in the ports and freight rail sector in Nelson Mandela Bay. Last year Transnet Port Terminals was issued with a permanent operating license for

operating the manganese terminal at the Port of Ngqura. The relocation of the manganese terminals had been a priority for the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber for a number of years. The Business Chamber had been lobbying extensively over several years with the Transnet group and all the relevant government departments for the relocation of the manganese terminal. The first manganese ship to make use of the manganese terminal at Ngqura is expected to dock in the harbour in the last quarter of 2018. The new manganese facility will include extensive port and rail infrastructure upgrades, which form a part of Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy to increase manganese exports. Recently we also welcomed Transnet National Ports Authority’s multimillion rand upgrades to the port of Port Elizabeth, viewed as a step in the right direction to realising Operation Phakisa. The R186-million upgrades to the port’s lead-in jetties and boat maintenance repair areas, is a welcome boost to our local economy. As the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber we can indeed find hope in these wins for the city, while we continue to collaborate for Nelson Mandela Bay to become the best mid-sized city in Africa to live, work, play and grow a business by 2030.

Africa. Blue Planet technical applications manager Charlie Hopkins said the product was imported from the USA and had been used successfully in more than 60 countries worldwide. Among its successes, said Hopkins, was the treatment of industrial waste water from a local cheese manufacturing plant. “They have to dump whey that doesn’t meet the requirements to process into cheese. It’s really bad stuff but adding extra bacteria fixes the problem – it’s very much a hands-on process that is managed and monitored.” Hopkins said Blue Planet SA would start to manufacture the product locally in the second half of the year to ensure that pricing was not dependent on exchange rate fluctuations and that continuous supply could be guaranteed.

T

he contribution of local entrepreneurs to the South African economy is generally underestimated. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) contribute close to 50% of South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) and generate more than 60% of new jobs created in the economy. This is according to Ben Bierman, chief financial officer at Business Partners Limited, who was speaking in light of the launch of the 2016 Entrepreneur of the Year competition sponsored by Sanlam and Business/Partners. Now in its 28th year, this renowned competition pays homage to courageous South African entrepreneurs who dedicate themselves to their enterprises / businesses driving growth, creating much needed jobs and contributing towards economic development in the country. The latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2015 / 2016 Global Report states that while on average, 42% of working-age adults in the monitored economies see good entrepreneurial opportunities in their markets, as many as one-third of potential entrepreneurs are constrained from starting a business due to the fear of failure. Bierman says that South Africa needs to proactively address this fear of failure by creating

an entrepreneurial ecosystem that provides support and business finance and celebrates entrepreneurs’ hard work and achievements. While South Africa has recently experienced tough economic conditions that may not necessarily enable SMEs to grow, opportunities do exist for those entrepreneurs who continue to identify gaps in the market and transform these into viable businesses. Prizes valued at R 2 million can be won, which includes cash prizes of R425 000. Competition winners will also receive valuable mentorship support, networking opportunities and national media exposure. Entrepreneurs interested in entering the competition can download entry forms online at www.eoy.co.za The closing date for the competition is National Youth Day, 16 June 2016. Enquiry No: 5

Nearing 100 mark in local exports

O

n the export side of their business FAW Vehicle Manufacturers SA (Pty) Ltd has registered 90 units built locally for export into Africa. In February this year another ten FAW J5 tippers units left the local Coega-based production plant for Tanzania. A growing number of Africa truck dealers who traditionally placed their orders with FAW China continue to move their order to originate out of South Africa owing to the shorter lead time for delivery, the high levels of quality from the South African plant, and the reduced cost of sourcing FAW vehicles on the same continent. Cheng Zhang, Marketing and Strategy Manager, and spokesperson for FAW Vehicle Manufacturers SA, explains: “There are many advantages of sourcing FAW products from our South African base – the most important being time-to-market in the Africa countries, and of course for

the SACD and AU, the added advantage which comes from the import/export duty agreements,” he adds. From the cost point of view, the African buyer can save between 25% - 40% on complete vehicle import duty. Another advantage is that customers can get their vehicles within 30 days of order. FAW SA says it plans to support sales in almost all the right-hand drive African countries. “However, our plan is to assemble the left-hand drive vehicles to supply to the African Union countries in future, where they too can get duty advantages.” FAW SA is already supplying parts to those African dealers who import SA-spec models. Some dealers who import African-spec models from FAW, still source their parts stock from China directly, because the purchase process is familiar to them and uptime in

not affected. FAW Vehicle Manufacturers SA (Pty) Ltd indicated that it constantly considers which of its global truck offering in medium, heavy and extra-heavy ranges are feasible for building locally. “However, we remain circumspect on the drastically changing our local production complexity by adding too many different models produced at our Coega-based plant. It remains in our interest to keep our production plant simple, and to continue to maintain the highest levels of quality, rather than chase huge production diversity without adequate up-skilling and possibly a loss of focus on our core value – Quality at a Fair Price,” affirms Zhang. Information The Cornerstone of Investing H ere at the Border-Kei Chamber of Business (BKCOB) we have a very interesting member who has only been in business for five years. In that time they have pioneered a new manufacturing process and two new energy efficiency products to which they own the IP. They are currently also looking to expand into Africa. No small feat by any standards and the reason for their success, in spite of the fact that many small businesses fail in their first year - Research and Development. After creating a successful product they didn’t sit back and rest on their laurels – they continuously improve their product by creating new products and, not accepting preconceived perceptions - ask difficult questions to which they seek answers. “Is this the best input/raw material/component we can use”? “Can we make it better ourselves”? Then innovate from there… It is with concern that there are very negative perceptions being voiced currently in South Africa – and rightly so, with the uncertain economic growth and mentioned investment downgrade. However, what I continuously find myself

thinking about, is that it is reliant upon all of us who live in South Africa to ensure that we all have a viable future both as businesses as well as all the families we support through these businesses. And key to any business venture is investment. We have an innovative investment platform that has been created in the BKCOB. A concept launched in 2010 no doubt, to seek investors to invest in our very own Buffalo City and aptly named Invest Buffalo City. This project has received new impetus as of 2015 with a new Project Manager, Saskia Haardt. Authenticated collections to curb debit order abuse

he payments industry has been experiencing a noticeable increase in Debit Order abuse and while a number of initiatives have been pursued to address this, this year will mark the biggest and most significant one – The Authenticated Collections Project. Walter Volker (pictured), the CEO of The Payments Association of South Africa (PASA) says: “Debit Order abuse not only has a significant impact on consumers, but also on the efficiency of the payment system. There are many scenarios where a company processes Debit Orders to a consumer’s bank account without a proper or valid mandate, no mandate or with an expired one. In other instances, consumers request their banks to return Debit Orders which have already been paid even when a valid mandate is in place.” According to PASA, currently 33 million “normal” Debit Orders to the value of R61 billion are processed each month in South Africa. Additionally, 14 million NonAuthenticated Early Debit Orders (NAEDO) and 1 million Authenticated Early Debit Order (AEDO) transactions are processed in the Early Processing Window. Current disputes for Debit Orders are reported at 0.5% while that of NAEDO is at a more alarming 7% - 8%. In addition, 18% of NAEDO transactions are unpaid due to a lack of funds. Says Volker: “These figures are way above the thresholds set by the industry to monitor the efficiency in the system. The current thresholds are 0.5% for disputes and 10% for unpaids, respectively – indicative of the need for action

to curb this.” Authenticated Collections is the process whereby consumers will electronically confirm to their bank that they are in the process of doing business with a company/user and that they agree to the details of the specific Debit Order. Once they have authenticated their Debit Order, the bank will check the Debit Order payment instruction from the company/user against the authenticated mandate to ensure that the debit is within the parameters agreed to, prior to processing. At this stage, this process will only be implemented for Early Debit Orders, and not for normal Debit Orders. “Authenticating all Early Debit Orders is a means to protect consumers from unscrupulous companies who attempt to debit consumers’ bank accounts without their permission,” says Volker. “As a result, consumers will know who is debiting their bank account, when they will debit and how much will be debited. At the same time, this new system will also protect Companies in that authenticated mandates will not be easily disputable by consumers.” All new early Debit Orders must be authenticated electronically as from 1 October 2016. However, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has approved a migration phase that allows companies to accommodate existing or current mandates that are processed in the Early Processing Window for a limited period. The agreed deadlines dates are : • 30 June 2017 for NAEDO, with some exceptions; and • 30 June 2019 for AEDO Enquiry No: 7

PE factory installs first lightweight solar photovoltaic panel in Africa

I

t is estimated that as much as 30% of commercial and industrial buildings have roofs which are not able to hold the weight of traditional solar panels making owners and

developers think that solar panels are not an option for their facilities. "This is no longer the case since Dumont Power – based in PE - introduced the SoloPower lightweight

photovoltaic (LPV) panel” said director, Raymond du Plooy. A leading SA manufacturer of fibreglass products, Cape Composite, recently installed a new factory roof, after a fire destroyed the previous one. “The new roof was unable to hold the weight of normal photovoltaic panels, whereas our SoloPower LPV panels, weighing a mere 2.4kg/ sqm were the only alternative. Phase 1 of the Cape Composite site has been completed with a total of 304 panels producing 60kWp of power.”said du Plooy. “The installation itself was quite remarkable as the product requires no power tools, framing, special handling and other common installation aspects." "The installation team working at a normal pace installed 1 watt per sec-

ond. There was no need for special rigging equipment to get the panels in place, no need for a large storage area to keep the panels before installation - it was really a very simple and fast installation. We even had two uninstalled panels blow off the roof and fall 30m to the ground and they were completely undamaged.” Cindy Oberholzer, Financial Director at Cape Composite (Pty) Ltd said “As a company we continually strive to “go green”, to cut down on waste and curb costs. Traditional glass photovoltaic panels were not an option for us, as they were too heavy for our roof structure which could not support them." "We came across SoloPower’s ultra-thin, flexible solar panels which offered us the perfect solution. The

main advantage and reason we decided to go the SoloPower route is because their LPV panels are extremely light. Other positive factors were that the LPV panels were not as fragile as glass.” Oberholzer continued “The installation took about two weeks. Our total roof size is 4500m², with the size of the section covered with these lightweight photovoltaic panels being an initial 1500m²." "We are the first company to use SoloPower in South Africa – and the parent company visited us on three occasions in order to assess and monitor the project, which will be an on-going process by SoloPower." "We will be installing the other two thirds our roof with these panels in the future” concluded Oberholzer. Enquiry No: 8

The purchase forms part of a business decision by Atlas to boost their growing fleet and to increase service delivery, in addition to replacing older vehicles owing to wear and tear, said Atlas General Manager, Craig Kerr. "We purchased about 28 Utility vehicles previously in total which have proven to be reliable and robust for a 24-hour fleet. We have found that the running costs of these vehicles have exceeded our expectations in terms of efficiency." Synergy is currently in negotiations with the contractors for the proposed development of a new luxury hotel on the new tourist attraction of the island of St Helena. “Between the Seychelles and St Helena, Synergy has gained experience in working in remote locations and the impact that such locations have on overall building costs. Availability of labour, procurement, shipping, duties, customs clearance, currency fluctuations, accommodation and general transport are issues that have a major impact on the overall building costs which we generally don’t have to consider when working in South Africa." "Synergy is also handling quantity surveying for the new Melia Lodge in the Serengeti, another very remote location, which - as first phase - calls for the completion of a 40km access road before any construction work can start,” he adds. Locally, Synergy Property Solutions

Gamechanging technology piloted

N

ew technology being piloted at Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth sees stores able to communicate tailored deals to customers with smartphones as they walk the mall, at the same time giving retailers key insights into shopper behaviour. Stellenbosch-based Skybird Technologies (Pty) Ltd has launched an integrated software platform called ONE, which makes use of specialised Gimbal proximity beacons. In a first for South Africa, this specialised beacon technology is used via a downloadable app which shoppers can use to locate special offers and sales involving their favourite brands. Some 300 Gimbal proximity beacons have been deployed throughout Baywest Mall. In turn, the technology learns shopper preferences over time and also makes key information available to retailers, helping them understand customer behaviour – from dwell time in store, time spent in various parts of the store, and what percentage of app users end up buying products, known as the conversion ratio.

The technology is already used at major global events such as the US Open golf tournament, the Super Bowl, and also at Apple stores in the US. According to Skybird director Kyle Porter, SA retailers have until now only been able to gather such key customer insights by unpacking information from loyalty programmes, measuring shoppers through foot-counters, data from the parking pay stations, and also from Wi-Fi. The platform being piloted at Baywest Mall could be tailored to handle other aspects of the shopping and retail experience, said Porter. “This technology is going to be a game-changer for SA retail,” said Porter. “Already major national brands are very excited about being able to interact directly with their customers, rather than wait for their customers to touch base with them online or via social media.” Baywest managing director Gavin Blows said Skybird’s ONE allowed the property developers to manage and control their entire Enquiry No: 11 digital inventories.

Committed to infrastructure service delivery C onsulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) supports the clarion call to address institutional and regulatory barriers to business investment and growth, announced by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan during the Budget Speech. “It means we must give greater impetus to sectors and industries where we have competitive advantages. And it means being bold where there is need for structural change, innovation and doing things differently. We need agility and urgency in implementation,” stated Gordhan. CESA has, for some time now, been aware that there are inefficiencies in the way public-sector infrastructure projects are implemented. These shortfalls include lack of planning, inappropriate procurement approaches, lack of project management capacity and capability and lack of other desired technical skills in the public sector. In addition these inefficiencies rob South Africa of multiple billions of Rands annually, which could be effectively used to fund the much-needed increase in infrastructure investment Gordhan explained that international experience has demonstrated that growth is ignited by strong and stable political and economic institutions, sound infrastructure that reduces the cost of doing business and facilitates trade, competition between firms and openness to trade and an environment where firms invest and undertake research and development. CESA welcomes the need for multiyear appropriations for major capital projects of which reform is under con-

sideration for the following projects: • Energy investment amounts to R70 billion this year and will be over R180 billion over the next three years, as construction of the Medupi, Kusile and Ingula power plants is completed. • Transport and logistics infrastructure accounts for nearly R292 billion over the next three years. Transnet is acquiring 232 diesel locomotives for its general freight business and 100 locomotives or its coal lines. There is R3.7 billion to upgrade the Moloto Road, R30 billion for provincial roads maintenance, R18 billion for bus rapid transit projects in cities and refurbishment of over 1700 Metrorail and Shosholoza Meyl coaches. • R62 billion is allocated for the housing subsidy programmes and R34 billion for bulk infrastructure and residential services in metropolitan municipalities.

• R28 billion will be spent over the MTEF on improving health facilities and • R54 billion on education infrastructure. • The next phase of the Oliphant’s River water scheme is in progress, completion of the supply to Lukhanji Municipality in the Eastern Cape, completion of the Wolmaranstad wastewater treatment works and construction of the Polihali Dam as part of the Lesotho Highlands project. These are some components of the R870 billion public sector infrastructure programme over the next three years. CESA with the backing of its member firms recommits itself to partner with Government and other key role players in finding lasting and practical solutions, especially in relation to infrastructure development.

South African travellers love the EC

A

ccording to the inaugural Eastern Cape Annual Tourism Barometer 2015, South African travellers took 3.2 million trips to the Eastern Cape, spending an estimated R3 billion in total direct value in 2014 says the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT). This number was up by 1.2 million trips in comparison to 2013 and means that domestic tourism is on the rise in the Eastern Cape. MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism Sakhumzi Somyo explains that “the Eastern Cape now boasts a 1.6 fold increase in domestic tourism to the province or some 1.2 million more tourists.” The barometer reports that the Eastern Cape stands in 6th position in terms of domestic travel and in 8th position in terms of international travel. According to the barometer based on statistics drawn from a variety of sources, the Eastern Cape accounted for 4.4% of South Africa’s 9 549 236 international tourist arrivals in 2014. Gauteng took the lion’s share, accounting for 49.4% of international arrivals but this is mostly driven by foreign tourists landing in OR Tambo Airport. All other provinces - the Western Cape (18.6%), Mpumalanga (14.1%), Limpopo (13.0%), KwaZulu-Natal

(11.8%), Free State (7.3%) and North West (6.6%) - had greater number of tourist arrivals. Somyo explains that the barometer will help the province reflect on “these weaker areas of our performance such as access for foreign travellers.” The 304 888 foreign tourists who visited the Eastern Cape spent an estimated R2.4 billion, about R500 million more than in 2013, and stayed on average 9.5 days. This means that foreign tourists who made the effort to get to the Eastern Cape, put down there roots rather than passing by. Most of the arrivals came from Germany (15.4%), followed by the United Kingdom (14.7%) and United

States of America (12.7%). In terms of bednights sold in the Eastern Cape in 2014, international travellers accounted for 2.8 million bednights, which was a 3.5% share of the national total. Domestic travellers accounted for 13.1 million bednights sold for an 11.3% share of the national total. The barometer which gives a detailed and graphic overview of tourism statistics, nationally and provincially, serves as a guideline for the province when developing research focus areas. The Hydraform block-making machinery was transported to site, offering the community full and direct access to the manufacturing technology. While the machinery’s mobility bodes well for convenience, the on-site set-up also means that the project doesn’t need to bear the cost of transporting bulk materials to site and the final product does not carry the additional embodied energy associated with heavy transport.

Setting a new benchmark in animal nutrition B ASF recently introduced a new enzyme for animal nutrition, called Natuphos E. As the first company to market a phytase for feed more than 25 years ago, BASF is once again proud to be setting a new standard in feed phytase technology. Natuphos E is a phytase which helps pigs and poultry better utilize phosphorous, other important nutrients such as proteins and calcium, as well as energy – bringing a wide range of benefits to the animal feed

industry. The majority of phosphorous in grains and oilseeds is bound to phytic acid, an anti-nutritive factor found in feed. Phytatebound phosphorous cannot be used by animals such as pigs and poultry, and is therefore lost as a potential nutrient and excreted. As a result, manufacturers need to supplement the feed with either inor-

ganic phosphates or very effective phytases to make sure the animals are supplied adequately with the required amounts of the essential mineral phosphorous. “The new generation phytase Natuphos E is built on BASF’s long term experience as well as expertise and ensures a very fast and efficient release of phytate-bound phospho-

rous and other valuable nutrients. As a result, feed manufacturers and farmers will benefit from considerable cost savings through a more nutritious diet for their animals. Additionally, adding Natuphos E to feed mixes reduces the need for non-renewable rock phosphates, contributing to more sustainable feed”, explains Chris Rieker, Vice President, BASF Animal Nutrition. Besides making phytate-bound phosphorous accessible to animals, Natuphos E also releases

griculture is fundamental to our wellbeing, deserving of our respect and support. As consumers, we are all participants in a food chain that extends from seed, to shelf, to our kitchen table, and we all have a share in the future of agriculture. However, ensuring that the world has enough to eat is a massive challenge. This is according to Klaus Eckstein, CEO and Country Divisional Head of CropScience for Bayer Southern Africa There are approximately 795 million people in the world that do not have enough food to lead a healthy active life – which is about one in nine people on earth. Added to this, the vast majority of the world’s hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished. This is evidence that the quality production of food sources should be a top priority on the development agenda for Africa. While strides have been made, long-term investment and commitments into local agricultural enterprises, both small and commercial, are essential to building supply chains for sustainable food sources that will meet demand and future export potential. In fact, to provide enough food for ourselves and our livestock well into the future, agriculture must become more efficient. This will require sustainable intensification of agriculture: producing more food on less land in a more sustainable way.

More production of food with increasingly scarce land and water resources will require innovative solutions from both the private and the public sectors, considerable investments and political support. It also means new and innovative partnerships between different stakeholders. At the same time, improved cultivation methods, seeds tailored to local growing environments and judicious use of crop protection options become critical. The integrated approach has proven to work better than the current stand-alone solutions and will revolutionise agriculture even further, with the farms of today becoming the future farms of tomorrow. Agriculture remains the key sector in Africa for food security, employment and growth. Agriculture led growth has the largest impact on reducing the depth and breadth of poverty. Therefore, the effective and sustainable intensification of agriculture is paramount to eliminate hunger and increase the continent’s food security. However, this will require embracing the interconnections and complexities of our food systems and constant collaboration between Government, agricultural and science communities to cultivate solutions that will yield a sustainable supply of safe, nutritious and plentiful food sources for years to come. Let’s welcome the farms of the future. Enquiry No: 18

decline in the water levels has left South Africa under serious water crisis. The failure of dams to hold water for long periods can prove detrimental as they form a massive part of our reserved water resources. Damax Kahn & Kahn’s dam liner presents an opportunity to sufficiently care for what is left of our reserved water. Losing small amounts of water in reservoirs is inevitable with evaporation taking place constantly during the hot weather, however seepage can significantly reduce the amount of reserved water. Damax Kahn & Kahn MD David Tromp explained that over time, concrete can crack, causing considerable water losses. “Repairs could take up valuable time and cost thousands of rands not budgeted for. Our PVC liners are an effective barrier against water loss caused by seepage and are great for farming, municipal and industrial applications.” Damax Kahn & Kahn liners are suitable for many applications and are guaranteed to make reservoirs watertight. The drop in liners can be used to replace damaged ones in steel panel reservoirs or wire mesh reservoirs. They have been proven to successfully seal the cracks quickly without requiring frequent or close monitoring.

Their effectiveness has been proven through usage in local municipalities for sewerage works projects. The product has also been used by a major petroleum company in its clean-up and filtration dam and for an agricultural project to create storage dams for cattle feed. Manufactured in South Africa, the liner is made from PVC, which boasts flexibility, a high level of strength and does not contain any harmful chemicals which could compromise the water quality. The liner is available in a standard 3,4 m width, and is supplied in lengths varying from 80 m to 150 m per roll. If the liner is damaged, Damax Kahn & Kahn provides customers with a two-part glue that can be used to repair any major tears or holes. In addition, there is a patch kit that works like a sticker and can even be applied underwater for any small holes. Tromp highlights that Damax Kahn & Kahn can either supply a DIY drop in liner or install the liner for its clients. “The liners are installed using specialised machinery by trained staff who use a combination of a wedge welder and an extrusion welder. Fusing the plastic sheeting is done quickly, cost-effectively and the liner can last up to 15 years,” he concludes.

Agri hubs for slurry fertiliser discs

he new SKF Agri Hub for fertiliser injector discs has been specially engineered to boost farm productivity and profitability through increased performance and improved machine up-time while minimising the impact on the environment. Under mounting pressure to increase yields while keeping input costs to a minimum, farmers look to OEMs for equipment that delivers ever-greater reliability, efficiency and performance. “This can be a challenge particularly for slurry fertiliser discs which operate under extremely harsh, corrosive conditions,” states SKF Key Accounts Manager – Agriculture, Charl Engelbrecht. He explains that typically these machines incorporate conventional metallic hub assemblies to mount the cutting disc on to the slurry fertiliser injector machine. ”However, the low corrosion resistance and poor sealing performance of these conventional units often results in poor reliability and premature failure. The seasonal replacement of these units is an expensive exercise for farmers both in time and money.” Engelbrecht also points out that alongside increased warranty costs, premature failures hold the risk of damage to reputations and customer relationships for OEMs. To overcome these challenges, SKF has specially designed and engineered the Agri Hub for slurry discs in the harsh, corrosive

Celebrating 25 years

lbany Pumps - based outside Grahamstown – celebrates 25 years in business this year. The company was started in November 1991 as an agent for Mono Pumps. It all began in the drought years of the later 90s, when Jimmy and Di Emslie started “as a husband and wife team which isn’t always easy”, Di admitted. Later they were joined by their eldest son, Brent and the Albany Pumps team now comprises of Jimmy, Brent, Di Emslie and Sandra Beer and their dedicated staff. The company is now recognised as the “Pump Doc” and supplier of a wide variety of borehole, surface and solar pump installations in the area. Amongst the many interesting and innovative projects that the company has been commissioned to complete over the years, was the installation of a solar powered water supply pumping system for a new housing development at Bushmans River. The project was commissioned at the end of February. This project was out of the ordinary as it required that ten 300 watt solar panels be mounted on a galvanised frame 6 meters off the ground. This was required for security purposes. The galvanised frame was designed and supplied by All Power in Port Elizabeth and the Grundfos pump was acquired from

for free water supply, especially to rural areas where water availability is at a premium and ensures a marked decline in water wastage. The stand pipe is installed in a concrete slab; the water mains are connected at the bottom of the stand pipe, which is protected by this concrete slab. Simply turning the hand wheel opens a diaphragm valve allowing the water to flow from the outlet spout which is at a height sufficient to allow a 25 liter container or bucket to be filled. When motion stops, the water flow stops. The standpipe is constructed from hot dipped galvanized steel and consists of simple and easily serviced components. The design is completely mechanical, and contains no magnetic solenoids. The design is modular with all components screwed together facilitating easy on site servicing. Enquiry No: 23

atson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group, has introduced its new 530 peristaltic cased pump for metering and transfer applications such as surface coating, printing and lime addition. The cost effective pump offers easier operation and greater versatility coupled with high levels of accuracy. The new 530 models meet the demands of rugged and often remote environments and are built to operate 24/7 without interruption. Furthermore, it is possible to quickly check control parameters and avoid expensive errors with visual status through a bright colour display, while an intuitive menu structure makes for confident and easy operator interaction. Users will also benefit from the 530 models’ integrated Profibus networking capabilities. With two-way, real-time communications, the 530 range offers increased diagnostic capability and faster response. This helps to optimise process control and minimise plant downtime. The versatile Watson-Marlow 530 range of process pumps offers four drive options and nine pumphead variants. This enables users to choose from manual operation to fully automated control, including the ability to link up to 16 pumps and provide real-time communication. The pumps deliver flow rates from 0.0001 ml/min to 3.5 litre/min. It is the pumphead which determines both the flow rate and the pressure that can be achieved to match the needs of the specific process. 530 pumps can be fitted with either continuous tubing pumpheads, or with LoadSure tube element pumpheads for pressures up to 7 bar. The new 530 pumps deliver maximum process uptime and are built to operate 24/7 without interruption. In addition, they have no expensive seals, valves or diaphragms, and do not suffer gas locking, corrosion or clogging. They require just a single spare part inventory – the tube. For the new 530 models, the company’s long life and chemical resistant Marprene is the ideal choice for industrial applications. Marprene industrial grade thermoplastic elastomer tubing offers wide chemical compatibility and long life, along with low gas permeability. Depending on a user’s process needs, the 530 models can feature LoadSure tube elements, which fit into position for simple, errorfree tube loading. Enquiry No: 24

MG’s strategy to enhance its fluid technology services to meet growing market demand, encompasses the introduction of new products, with the latest developments in design technologies, materials and coatings. The company’s expansion programme in the fluid technology sector also involves increasing stockholdings through more than 140 BMG branches and a wide distribution network in South Africa and across borders into Swaziland, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania. The company’s extensive range of components for fluid technology systems and general industrial applications, includes valves, hydraulic hoses and fittings, accumulators, cylinders, heat exchangers, hydraulic motors and hydraulic plumbing, as well as pumps and reservoir accessories. “Compact butterfly valves, with good flow characteristics and low maintenance require-

ments, are important components in BMG’s extensive range of valves for industrial flow control,” says Willie Lamprecht, national product manager valves, BMG. An advantage of using quarter turn butterfly valves rather than any other type of valve, is the simple, wafer shaped design, with fewer parts, for easy repair and minimal maintenance. Although butterfly valves and ball valves are both quarter turn, the benefit of butterfly valves is when they are actuated pneumatically, they open and close very quickly. The rotational disc in butterfly valves is lighter than a ball and these valves require less structural support than a ball valve of the same diameter. Unlike a ball valve, the disc of butterfly valves is always present in the passageway within the flow. This means a pressure drop is induced in the flow, regardless of the position of the valve. Ball valves should only be used

for isolation, whereas butterfly valves can be safely used for isolation and control of flow. BMG’s Desponia centric butterfly valves (DN 25 -1600) with an elastomer liner, are designed for safe and reliable regulation of liquids and gases in diverse industries. This range has a maximum working pressure of 16 bar and an operating temperature range of between -20°C and +140°C according to the material. Bianca centric butterfly valves (DN 32 -900) with an on/off and control service, have a durable plastomer liner suitable for aggressive and corrosive fluids. These high performance valves have a 16 bar maximum working pressure and an operating temperature range of between -20°C and +200°C depending on working conditions. Special ATEX valves in this range are suitable for use in explosive atmospheres. Other valves available from BMG include seated, knife and wedge gate valves, as well as ball type check valves, thermoplastic, diaphragm, pinch and angle seat valves. Enquiry No: 25

Robust submersible pumps now available

rowing urbanisation in Africa has resulted in massive infrastructure development and this, according to Integrated Pump Technology, has resulted in an increased demand for robust submersible drainage and wastewater pumps. The company recently extended its product offering with the inclusion of the extensive range of robustly constructed Faggiolati Pumps. Manufactured in Macerata, Italy, these quality submersible drainage and wastewater pumps are considered a natural complement to the company’s Grindex pump and accessory range. Colin Adams, managing director of Integrated Pump Technology, says there are a myriad of submersible drainage applications that call for a reliable and efficient pump that is capable of operating in the often arduous conditions found on mines, construction sites and water treatment plants across Africa. “Significantly, Faggiolati submersible pumps do not only have application in the mining industry but are also ideally suited to general water transfer in the wastewater, effluent

and sewage treatment sectors as well as in specialised pumping applications found in the paper and pulp industry, desalination plants and marine pumping,” he says. One of the most significant advantages that Faggiolati pumps offer is that all units are equipped with Premium Efficiency IE3 motors. Adams says this is particularly important on a continent that needs energy efficient products and solutions. Faggiolati Pumps has been producing submersible pumps since 1985, and all pumps are manufactured in

accordance with ISO 9001:2008 and UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 standards. Certified to ISO 8007934:2011, most of the pump sizes can also be delivered for use in explosive atmospheres (ATEX). The pumps have a reputation globally for overall efficiency, both motor and hydraulic. Pumps for sludge and slurries

B

ecker Mining South Africa’s PVS range of vortex pumps has been designed to efficiently pump sludge and slurries containing large abrasive solids and fibrous materials in light, medium and heavy service industries. The PVS (pumpmor vertical spindle) range, which can handle solids to 72 mm (3 inches) and S.G’s (specific gravities) to 1,5, achieves up to 87 m heads at speeds of 2 950 rpm. These units are available in two and three inch models, with a 0,7 m spindle length and single motor drive. “The most important feature of these vertical pumps is the recessed, non-clog impeller design that prevents binding and clogging problems." "Since the impeller is clear of the pump casing, any solids and fibrous materials that enter the suction inlet will be expelled through the pump discharge, without damaging the impeller,” says Theo Cambanis, Becker Mining South Africa. “Another advantage of Becker’s pumps design is that spares are completely interchangeable. This reduces inventory management costs and sim-

plifies on-site repairs. Because all components are locally manufactured, these pumps are readily available and a large stock holding of spares and raw materials ensures swift delivery throughout the country. The PVS series, with a robust one piece casing, has been designed to efficiently cope with all types of solids and fibrous materials. A locknut that fastens the impeller to the shaft prevents the impeller from turning off if the motor is started in the wrong rotation direction. These pumps have a sleeve stuffing box clearance that minimises blow-back of materials being pumped around the shaft sleeve, without requiring sealing contact. A high strength pipe column maintains alignment between the bearing frame and its casing. There are no submerged bearings on the cantilevered shaft. Bearings have been selected for a minimum service life of 24 000 hours when operating at any point on the hydraulic coverage curve with 1,0 S.G. Grease lubrication is standard.

tlas Copco Compressor Technique’s new UD+ compressed air single filter which replaces the previous generation two-filter solution, gives a 40% lower pressure drop and removes contamination in compressed air down to 0.01 ppm. In-line filters are commonly used in industrial applications to decontaminate the compressed air line, removing concentrations of water and dust (and oil in the case of an oil injected compressor) generally found in compressed air. The two-filter solution is currently used by over 50% of oil-injected compressor applications to achieve suitable quality compressed air, according to Atlas Copco Compressor Technique’s Industrial Air Business Line Manager Charl Ackerman. “The Atlas Copco generalpurpose coalescing filter (DD) removes liquid water and oil aerosols down to 0.1 mg/m³ (0.1 ppm) and particles down to 1.0 µm from the air which must then be passed through Atlas Copco’s high efficiency coalescing filter (PD) to remove aerosols larger than 0.01 mg/m³ (0.01 ppm) and particles down to 0.01 µm,” explains Ackerman. To minimise the energy loss

normally associated with compressed air filtration, the filter design must combine maximum contaminant removal efficiency with minimum pressure drop. Atlas Copco has developed a combined technology in the new patent-pending UD+ cartridge filter solution that is capable of removing contamination in compressed air down to 0.01 ppm from a single filter unit. “This remarkable solution has been achieved without increasing the size of filter housings and with a net pressure drop reduction of 40%,” emphasises Ackerman. The secret of the UD+ filter’s success lies in a filtration concept known as Nautilus shell technology. While the traditional one or two layers of dense filter media efficiently remove debris, they tend to clog easily, particularly during the removal of wet contaminants. The new nautilus technology is based on spiral pathways for the air to move through; the filter media is wrapped around itself and the filtration area is significantly larger while being less densely packed due to the use of more open, glass fibre media. Skills training key to optimising investment

f profitability and efficiency are among the goals of any machine-based operation, then a good reliability solutions programme is imperative. Through reliability solutions services, such as oil analysis, thermal imaging, vibration monitoring, balancing, laser alignment and others, machines are monitored and maintained in such a way as to enable them to yield their optimum output. Over time industrial / mechanised systems become exponentially more advanced and complicated, and so does their operation and maintenance. Therefore, it is essential that staff at the respective levels of operation are kept educated on how to run and look after the machinery. Condition monitoring specialists WearCheck - who celebrate their 40th birthday this year have been running skills training courses for

their customers for more than 20 years. It has been shown time and again that skilled and well-trained machine operators are able to add to the bottom line of an industrial operation by maintaining the components efficiently, and they are able to do this because they have undergone the right training. WearCheck’s courses can be conducted onsite in any location, and cover accurate oil analysis report interpretation, correct sample taking, pre-planned maintenance schedules and good lubricant management. The course material draws heavily on WearCheck’s database of sample diagnoses accumulated over the past 40 years, as well as the 600 000 new samples processed each year, experience with a wide variety of makes and models of machinery, and regional and global data on wear trends.

Super dealer for southern Africa appointed

H

ytec Fluid Technology (HFT) has been appointed ‘Super Dealer’ for Cummins Filtration’s range of Fleetguard engine protection products for southern Africa, as part of a recent distribution agreement. This collaboration means that HFT, the hydraulic fluid specialists in the Hytec Group, now offers complete engine protection in addition to its total hydraulic fluid management offering across the sub-continent. Coinciding with this collaboration was the recent opening of Cummins Filtration’s new filtration and coolant manufacturing plant at its new regional distribution centre for Southern Africa in Johannesburg. The premises incorporates Cummins Filtration’s component warehousing and local manufacturing facility, which produces Fleetguard fuel and air filters, and the modern Fleetguard Organic Acid Technology (OAT) engine coolant. “Fleetguard is ranked as the top two global brands in the international filtration market,” points out HFT General Manager Sandor Bottyan. “Cummins Filtration’s manufacturing investment in South Africa, along with their technical skills and stockholding, means our collaboration is mutually beneficial.” These benefits mean HFT can work closely with Cummins Filtration in South Africa, and Hytec’s African experience and tailored

hydraulic products, including Bosch Rexroth products, add to the filtration specialist’s market penetration feasibility. Bottyan and Cummins’ Components Director for Africa Feroze Chowdary, refer to the synergies between the two companies. “Bosch Rexroth, as a hydraulics OEM and part of the Hytec Group, and whose hydraulic product range for mobile equipment we support in the region, has a vested interest in delivering high-quality protection for its hydraulic systems,” says Bottyan. “Cummins is the only engine manufacturer that has invested in its own filtration manufacturing capabilities,” Chowdary adds. “Fleetguard is the only filtration and engine protection OEM in the world that belongs to a high-tech engine manufacturer. pressure measuring devices. Instrotech offers the LR-Cal LDW series of deadweight testers, which are available in the ranges from 10 bar up to 1400 bar. The direct measurement of pressure (according to its definition as a quotient of force and area) ensures high accuracies and long term stability. These testers are used extensively in calibration laboratories in industry, standards institutes and research facilities. The LDW series are ideally suited to on-site use as well as for service and maintenance purposes. The customized assembly allows set up of a complete, compact system consisting of a universal basement and the measuring systems (piston/cylinder units). The high quality piston/cylinder units are manufactured from tungsten carbide which is known for its small temperature co-efficiency. Fast and uncomplicated changes of the measuring range are possible using a flat spanner.

Deadweight tester In order to generate the individual test points, the piston/cylinder system is weighted with mass loads which are also calibrated and specially adapted to the required application. The basement is fitted with the corresponding system, depending on the measuring range of the device under test. The pressure is set via an integrated pump or, if an external pressure supply is available, via control valves (pneumatic models). For fine adjustment, an adjustable volume with precision spindle is available. The weight applied is proportional to the desired pressure and provided by using optimally graduated weights. As soon as the measuring system reaches equilibrium, there is a balance of forces between pressure and wheel weights. Africa’s technological revolution

End-of-arm tooling innovation

D

EPRAG is a traditional manufacturer of professional air tools, sold worldwide under the brand Deprag Industrial. Their tools are used in operations in every significant field of industry, including the automobile industry, machine building and potentially explosive environments. Deprag offers a wide range of pneumatic grinders, polishers, files, drills, thread-cutting machines, impact wrenches, hammers, scalers, saws, pliers and ATEXcertified tools. Nowadays individual solutions customised to specific customer requirements are ever more frequently in demand. Deprag was one of the manufacturers asked to come up with such a customized solution for one of their longstanding, respected clients from the automobile industry. The customer had previously been using handheld pistol grip polishers from the PLU range of Deprag’s standard series on welding for vehicle bodywork. Pavel Šilhán, Sales Manager for Deprag Industrial Tools, emphasised: “The project definition was to replace grinding using handheld air tools with End-of-Arm Tooling whilst also taking into consideration the irregularities of the surface in relation to the contact force. This contact pressure is not consistent for every component”. There are new technologies currently on the market which enable the contact force to react sensitively to varying surface profiles. They

have their own electronic controller which is independent from the robot’s controller. One particular stipulation by the client was, however, to manage without this additional controller. The developer selected a stationary spindle with the necessary technical parameters for the required quality standards based on the grinding material and framework data provided by the client. The spindle was set up in such a way to prevent any limitation on the robot’s freedom of movement. The adjustable spindle positioned in the clamping chuck is connected to a pneumatic cylinder which exerts a defined axial force on the grinding tool. Spindle overload can be adjusted in an external range of 1.0 to 6.3 bar. Using this method, the required contact pressure can be implemented sensitively without using a regulation circuit. The technical 3D documentation of the grinding head was developed next as a robot simulation. At the same time, in the Deprag laboratory the optimal contact pressure in relation to the grinding material was determined in order to implement the required quality criteria for the surface. Only then was a prototype of the stationary grinding head produced and successfully tested under real conditions in mass production at the customer’s facilities. From an economic standpoint the investment is amortized within three months.

instrumentation, measurement & control

Monitoring of plant noise levels in real time Y okogawa recently announced that it has concluded an agreement with StatoilASA, a Norwegian energy company, to jointly develop a field wireless system. Under this agreement, they will develop a system that can map noise levels in real time at Statoil’s plants and upstream (exploration and production) facilities, as part of this company’s Wireless Noise Surveillance Project (WiNoS). By introducing this system, Statoil will be able to obtain real-time noise information during work in noisy areas, and utilize the data for better risk control of noise exposure of personnel. In plants, there are many different noise

sources, and the noise that is produced can have a harmful effect on workers, impairing their hearing. As noise levels often vary considerably, periodic monitoring with sensors must be done in real time and at multiple locations so that plans can be drawn up for protective measures such as restricting the amount of time workers spend in noisy work environments and requiring that they wear hearing protection. Statoil and Yokogawa aim to develop a system that will help Statoil in risk management of noise exposure and achieve compliance with the OHSAS 18001 specification*1. This system

SA Africa aims to make the lives of firefighters safer and their jobs easier by continuously improving its products. In light of this MSA has upgraded the interface of its Alpha Personal Network technology with an improved display. The Alpha Personal Network from MSA is an electronic personal monitoring and alarm system that can also be enhanced with telemetric capability. A unique feature of the system is its versatility, as it can be used as a standalone system or in conjunction with a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). “Alpha technology encompasses a network of innovations that improve safety, efficiency and capability beyond classic SCBA systems,” MSA Africa respiratory and fire helmets product manager Suraksha Mohun comments. The robust and user-friendly Alpha Network System monitors the location and breathable air of rescue personnel, so as to ensure a high level of safety for emergency teams. The system hardware is fireproof and designed to withstand the hostile environment of emergency fire rescue operations. The system also boasts excellent receiver sensitivity. The highly reliable signal allows for

effective communication at a range of up to 4 km. The system is also able to automatically select an available channel, through a licencefree 866 MHz frequency. The monitoring and telemetry components of the system include the alphaMITTER, alphaHUD, alphaSCOUT and alphaBASE software. AlphaSCOUT is a pressure gauge, mini-computer, motion sensor and alarm that calculates remaining service time, based on the user’s breathing rate. The alphaMITTER is a short-range transmitter attached to a SCBA. The alphaHUD is able to deliver an evacuation signal when used in conjunction with the alphaSCOUT and alphaBASE command communication option. The latest upgrade features an improved display, making it even more user-friendly. “It has an automated wireless tally-board system which provides effective information to operational centres on the location and supply of breathable air to individuals,” Mohun explains. “MSA Africa is the first company to have developed a gas detector to be used in in tandem with the system,” she concludes. will use an ISA100 Wirelessfield wireless network to collect data from noise sensors distributed throughout a plant. In real time, this data will be superimposed on a map of the plant that can be viewed in a central control room or via a cloud service. The data can be saved and accessed at any time for analysis. For such applications, field wireless systems are superior to wired systems because it is easier to collect data from sensors spread out over a wide area. Sensors can be installed in difficult-to-wire locations, and wiring costs are lower, even with systems that have many sensors.

N

Based on this agreement, Yokogawa will provide its technology and products to build the ISA100 Wireless communication system, and Statoil will utilize its expertise to determine the overall system specifications and conduct field tests. Technologies contributed by other Norwegian companies and research institutes will be used to develop the sensors and data visualization graphics.

Two-in-one designs for gas ultrasonic flow meters

ew Daniel 3410 Series gas ultrasonic meter platform with dual-transmitters and meters in a single body provide more process insight to minimize measurement uncertainty, financial risk and operating costs. Emerson Process Management has announced a new Daniel gas ultrasonic flow meter platform that elevates its well-proven British Gas design by providing two meters and transmitters in a single body to help natural gas operators and pipelines improve reliability and efficiency. Designed to maximize capital budgets by permitting two completely independent measurements with the installation of just a single flowmeter, the new 3415 (four-path + one-path) and 3416 (four-path + two-path) gas ultrasonic flow meters combine a four-path fiscal meter with an additional check meter, while the new 3417 (four-path + four-path) meter provides two fiscal meters for full redundancy and equal accuracy within one meter body. This two-in-one redundant design delivers continuous on-line verification of custody transfer measurement integrity, device health and process conditions, and improves fiscal metering confidence while ensuring regulatory compliance. Both Daniel 3415 and 3416 gas ultrasonic meters measure flow using four horizontal chordal paths in addition to a reflective path dedicated to verification of the primary measurement, enabling improved metering insight,

more informed decision making and simplified flow meter verification. For enhanced immunity to pipe wall contamination, the 3416 meter is equipped with an additional vertical reflective path to detect liquid or very thin layers of contamination at the bottom of the meter that otherwise remain completely hidden in a direct-path meter design. This allows reliable monitoring of process changes before they affect measurement, thus reducing calibration frequency and enabling maintenance to be conditionbased instead of calendar-based. To further improve reliability and uptime in particularly demanding custody transfer applications, users can leverage the Daniel 3417 gas ultrasonic meter with its unique dual-plane configuration that combines two independent four-path British Gas fiscal meters into one meter body. The configuration ensures complete measurement redundancy with two meters of equal accuracy and the ability for each meter to operate independently of the other. This design significantly reduces cost for measurement stations that traditionally utilize two separate meters with their associated piping, calibrations and installations. The 3417 meter is ideal for border stations that are becoming bi-directional, storage applications, remote locations such as offshore platforms or for use on large compressor staEnquiry No: 36 tions or lines without a bypass.

At work with wind turbines at Nojoli

L

ocally based international heavy-lift, specialised transport and plant installation company,

Vanguard has been awarded the transport and crane erection contract for the Nojoli Wind Farm near

Cookhouse in the Eastern Cape. The Nojoli project comprises 44 Vestas V100 2 MW wind turbine generators, which have the capacity to generate more than 275 GWh per year or enough for 86,000 South African households. The company’s contract commenced with discharging the vessel in December 2015 at the Port of Ngqura near Port Elizabeth, and storage at the port. “The team on this tight-deadline project had an early start to the year, arriving back to discharge a second vessel on 2 January 2016 with further vessels to be discharged throughout the project.” According to Boshoff, the contract will run until 23 June 2016, and involves not only the discharge and storage at the port, but also specialised transportation of all components to site, about three and a half hours away, followed by the erection

of the turbines utilising Vanguard’s GTK1100 crane. A fleet of extendable and multiaxle trailers transports the components, which include nacelles weighing 72 tonnes, hubs of 21 tonnes, and turbine blades of 50 metres in length. “Among the challenges to be managed on this route to site is a mountain pass with very narrow turns,” said Boshoff. “We work with the traffic authorities to close off the pass entirely, so that our extendable trailers can safely use the whole road to manoeuvre the blades through the turns.” On site, the GTK crane is assisted by a dedicated and specialised team, including 2 qualified Red Seal riggers, who lead the team to assemble and break down the crane, so that it can be moved and positioned for the next turbine – each process taking around 10 hours.

“Another team pre-populates the handstands with the components in advance to ensure that no delays occur with the main build,” he said. With every aspect of the job, detailed method and risk assessments are done, including environmental assessments. Once operational, Nojoli Wind Farm’s environmentally-friendly electricity supply will save the atmosphere from more than 251,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, which would have come from coalpowered stations. The wind farm is being constructed by Enel Green Power, which has about 740 plants operating in 15 countries in Europe, the Americas and Africa; EGP’s total installed capacity is 9,600 MW from a range of sources including wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass. For the independent broker there is the ability to remain independent while benefitting from greater buying power. Other advantages include succession planning to safeguard the value of your practice, lowered operating costs, and access to skilled technical resources through the Acuideas shared engine room (SER). In addition, you gain access to TCF-compliant new and leading products, as well as advice practice. Acuideas not only reduces costs but also plays a proactive role in growing the broker’s business through proven business strategies and products. Acuideas Executive Head, Sujeeth Bishoon (pictured) comments, “New trends and regulations in the insurance sector are forcing companies to relook the way they do business. Some role players are selling out – although market conditions are becoming such that it is difficult to realise a good price – as a result of uncertainty the RDR process is placing on future valu-

Using proven techniques and business approaches, Acuideas steps in by offering a professional, cost-effective portfolio management solution to these books of business. With an expected R2bn + worth of premium buying power at its disposal, a network of 25 branches across the country, and a recently announced 51% Black Empowerment Shareholding through investment by African Rainbow Capital in Indwe, Acuideas promotes a new Collaborative Partnership Model (CPM) in the insurance sector. This is supported by cutting edge product development and personal, yet professional, business relationships. Name change celebrates ‘Afrika’ C entury old engineering and environmental consulting company, Jeffares & Green, recently announced that it will be changing its name and renewing its brand to better reflect goals and strategies. JLS Jeffares founded a consultancy in 1922, and was joined by Hal Green in 1927. They became partners in 1947 and the name Jeffares & Green (J&G) became synonymous with professional engineering that never compromised on quality. Throughout its existence, J&G has progressed and evolved, keeping pace with fluctuations in demand, the industry and customer requirements. To maintain momentum for continuous development, the shareholders made a bold decision at the end of 2015 to rename and rebrand the company in order to better align the name and the brand with its areas of operation - the African continent. Management also wished to align the brand with the firm’s strategy to remain a proudly South African owned company. According to J&G’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Charmagne Denny; “The brand development process started with the appointment of brand specialists. A strategic session was held and, after some collaboration, naming options were pre-

Agreement for new air-insulated switchgear

BB South Africa has been awarded a three-year frame agreement for its UniGear air-insulated switchgear (AIS) and ZX0.2 gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), from the City of Cape Town. “This is the first time that the City of Cape Town has bought ABB ZX 0.2 gas insulated switchgear for its distribution substations,” says Bryan Johnson, Product Group Manager, MV Switchgear, ABB South Africa. “It demonstrates confidence in ABB and our MV solution.” The frame agreement, which is estimated to include 300 panels over the three-year period, includes three portions: extension of existing UniGear switchgear, new UniGear air-insulated switchgear and new ZX0.2 gas-insulated switchgear manufactured in ABB Germany, with the associated cable supply and installation to be executed by ABB in South Africa. The frame agreement is to supply, install and commission 12 kV indoor switchgear for distribution infrastructure feeding from main step-down substations throughout the City of Cape Town and surrounding areas. “By continuously investing in infrastructure, we will be encouraging and, indeed, leading growth by always ensuring the physical supporting capacity for people to build opportunities,” says Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayoral Committee Member: Utility Services,

City of Cape Town. “Such an approach places the City of Cape Town at the forefront of South African metros and will bring us in line with international best practice in terms of development strategies.” The ABB UniGear ZS1 airinsulated switchgear supplied by ABB, has a current rating of 25 kA with 630 A, 1250 A and 2500 A and an internal arc rating of one second in accordance with the international standard IEC 62271-200. The ABB UniGear will be provided with a special adaptation which comprises a segregated cable box. “We are providing the City of Cape Town with a fully certified IEC compliant switchgear, which includes IEC compliance of all components,” says Johnson. “The switchgear will help to increase the safety, reliability and efficiency of the distribution network.” While some components will be brought in from ABB’s global factories, the majority will be manufactured locally at ABB’s modern facility in Longmeadow, Johannesburg. “ABB producing switchgear locally means that customers can purchase the highest quality switchgear manufactured to global stand-

ards,” says Johnson. ABB has been manufacturing medium voltage switchgear since 1995 shortly after the first democratic elections in South Africa, which shows its long-term commitment to the country and the Southern African region. Customers of ABB medium voltage switchgear include those from industries such as petrochemicals, power stations, pulp and paper, the steel industry as well as renewable energy generators. SMMEs taking advantage of opportunities

S

mall and emerging contractors across the Eastern Cape are taking advantage of opportunities to establish themselves created by the Coega Development Corporation (CDC). “From the very first time contractors moved on site there has been a strong emphasis on creating opportunities for small businesses,” says Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, Head of CDC Marketing and Communications. At present a minimum of 35 per cent of the value of two of the current projects in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) has been allocated to small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs). Seven SMME companies are providing bricklaying, welding and tiling services to the main contractors involved in the provision of bulk

municipal services in Zone 7. At least eight SMME companies will assist with the provision of civil works, sewerage and water for a new factory being built in the IDZ for Malaysian packaging company Lension. “The CDC was one of the first organisations in the country to structure SMME-friendly tenders. Our tenders are broken down into smaller bite-sized work suitable for smaller contractors,” said Andile Ntloko, CDC SMME unit head. “One of the conditions of the awarding of the two tenders was that a minimum of 35 per cent of the value of the project be subcontracted to SMME companies. Compliance to this requirement is monitored by the CDC,” adds Ntloko.

New roof truss technology

L

CP Roofing, leaders in roof truss technology, recently hosted an information session on Newlok the latest concealed fix roofing product from Safintra, who showcased the product – from roll forming the profile from coil to installation. One of the differentiating characteristics of the Newlok profile is that it can be interlocked with a snap or snap-and-seam mechanism. The two-part clip allows natural thermal expansion and contraction without unclipping between purlin supports, qualifying the profile as both a concealed fix and a standing seam profile, both allowing for thermal movement. The standing seam configuration provides hold-down strength in excess of 3kPa on negative wind uplift. Newlok is ideal for long spans on commercial and industrial buildings and also finds application in residential settings. Specifically designed for low-pitched roofs, fastened under the sheeting with clips and not pierced with traditional fasteners, it results in completely watertight sheeting, even at very low slopes. The 50mm rib height makes for optimal water-shedding capabilities at slopes as low as 1.5˚. LCP Roofing provided a sample roof structure onto which the newly rolled Newlok sheets were fastened, making for a tactile experience for attendees. Comments Lyndsay Cotton, LCP Roofing General Manager, “Guests could see how the malefemale joints easily snapped into place and how the clips held everything together for a smooth, sturdy, unpierced surface. Safintra also demonstrated their hand crimper for seaming eave and ridge sheets and their mechanical seamer for seaming the sheet length.” “Concealed fix roof sheeting has become popular among specifiers, but has, until now, not been well suited to high wind environments experienced in exposed, newly developed areas,” says Andri Pretorius, LCP Roofing Operational Director. “Presently, most concealed fix offerings readily available inland are 700mm wide and, due to changing climatic conditions, need to be positively fixed on both apices and eaves, negating the primary advantage of concealed fix roof sheeting. Typical residential applications make 700mm wide sheeting problematic to fix and finish off neatly, so fitting a 445mm wide sheet on a complex residential roof will be easier from a labour perspective,” he adds. “Newlok is an innovative addition to Safintra’s roof sheeting range and, in turn, to ours. We are proud to offer our customers the many benefits that come with the system,” remarks Pretorius. Enquiry No: 50

SMME contractors working on CDC-managed projects in the IDZ and the rest of the country are given support to ensure that they are able to deliver high quality work, according to Dr Vilakazi. “Our objective from the start of construction of the IDZ in 2002 has been to empower SMME companies to grow,” he adds. A dedicated team of technical managers and mentors provide technical and business support to SMMEs through from start to finish of every project in which they are involved. In addition the CDC hosts compliance workshops across the Eastern Cape with the aim to encourage SMMEs to comply with the legislation affecting their business growth. Enquiry No: 49

Making ‘old’ new

O

ne of the oldest buildings in Port Elizabeth recently enjoyed a multi-million rand facelift and Sika products formed an integral part of the operation. At well over a hundred years old, the Tramways building once formed part of the city’s tram network system. The building, situated in the Baakens Valley, gradually deteriorated and after being gutted by fire in the late 1990’s, became an eyesore. As part of a substantial urban renewal programme, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) decided to transform the dilapidated building into an impressive development incorporating new offices for the agency itself as well as a rooftop garden, a mezzanine floor, a restaurant and a large artwork display area. Two large halls that once housed off-duty trams will be restored to their former grandeur for conferences and exhibitions. The Aurecon Group, together with

Dominic Bonnesse Architects, designed the extensive transformation and, keeping in mind the heritage status of the old building, decided to restore most of the exterior façade. Since the old floors were in need of replacing, Sikafloor-66 ZA, a solvent-based polyurethane coating that is both decorative as well as protective, was specified, to keep the restoration as authentic as possible. Sikafloor-66 ZA provides excellent adhesion and its hard, extremely durable surface is quick-drying. Its UV resistance and chemical resistance allows for Sikafloor-66 ZA to be used internally or externally, on floors and walls in workshops, factories or laboratories. It is supplied in various colours in either gloss or matt finish. On completion of the project, contractor Pab Trading had coated the main

floor area measuring approximately 1000m², with Sikafloor-66 ZA (Clear Matt). As a feature, one of Sika’s highly decorative, yet economical and easily applied flooring systems was specified for a balcony measuring approximately 20m². Now that its dilapidated state has been significantly modernised and restored to its previous glory, the grand old Tramways building will once again stand proudly to the north of the Port Elizabeth harbour. With Sika’s internationally approved flooring products giving it a new lease of life, this major development is envisaged as the catalyst in transforming the whole Baakens Valley area into a vibrant Enquiry No: 51 section of the city.

etail stores in the FMCG industry are obliged to adhere to strict Health & Safety regulations which include a spotless shop floor. In addition to hygiene and appearance, cleaning up spillages also increases customer safety. But keeping floors clean can be an endless time consuming and expensive task, especially for facilities that experience high volumes of foot traffic. Goscor Cleaning Equipment has the perfect affordable, no-fuss cleaning solution with the T2 and T3 scrubber-dryers. These rugged machines meet all the requirements of this market segment; they are compact and reliable, deliver high performance, are easy to operate, have low operating and maintenance costs, and offer numerous additional features to ensure a clean, safe, pleasant and healthy working and shopping environment. The machines are amongst the quietest in the industry; at 68.5 decibels, which is comparable to normal conversation levels, it can deliver quiet ‘anytime’ cleaning even in noise-sensitive environments without causing any discomfort. The risk of slip-and-fall accidents are greatly reduces with Tennant’s industry leading water recovery. Small, congested spaces are ready for foot traffic

immediately after scrubbing. The high-performance T3 walk-behind scrubber cleans thoroughly, leaving behind no cleaning solution. Even around 180-degree turns, the T3's equal-pressure, parabolic squeegee recovers all cleaning solution from the floor. An alternative scrubbing option available on the T3 is the award-winning Foam activating Scrubbing Technology (FaST), the first and only automatic scrubbing system to receive high-traction certification from the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI). FaST delivers an advanced state of safety and cleanliness, eliminating slippery chemical residues; just-scrubbed floors are immediately dry and safe for foot traffic. In addition, FaST-Pak detergent cartridge avoids the handling of chemicals and offers significant savings by accurately measuring water and detergent to avoid unnecessary wastage. The compact dimensions of the T2 which weighs only 136kg (with gel battery) facilitates easy and comfortable manoeuvring in small congested spaces. By completely cleaning and drying small, congested areas in one pass, the machine increases operation efficiency and productivity dramatically and improves cleanliness and safety in previously difficult-to-reach Enquiry No: 52 areas.

igh quality chain hoists face the same challenge in South Africa as other reputable equipment brought into this country – a competitive price bettered by even cheaper imports from China. Despite their generally lower quality, the very low price of these Chinese imports makes for an attractive purchase. When they break down, they are simply discarded and replaced. Notwithstanding this challenge, Hitachi, a leading high quality chain-hoist brand manufactured in Japan and distributed in South Africa by Condra Cranes, reports steady local sales, the result of good service back-up and established distribution channels. Since Condra secured the Hitachi agency exclusively in 2009, sales outlets supported by well equipped agents have been set up in various provinces. A spokesman for Condra explained that repairs of high

quality chain hoists are usually cost effective, with the discardand-replace philosophy proving more expensive over the medium term than investing in better quality equipment and repairing it when required. He pointed out that Hitachi chain-hoists are well known for careful design and an ability to perform well and reliably for many years under robust conditions. The hoists feature helical gearing for quiet operation, electro-magnetic disc brakes for long life, and plug-in cables to reduce maintenance and installation time. Distributor Condra, which manufactures overhead cranes in the two-ton to 500-ton range, uses the Hitachi range to extend its lift offering all the way down to 250 kilograms. Enquiry No: 53

Waste tyres - the new coal?

A

ccording to a report by Accenture on the construction industry strategies for emerging markets, the global construction industry is expected to grow over the next decade, especially in the rapidly emerging economies of Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. Driven by urbanisation, globalisation, infrastructure renewal and the increasing needs of developing “megacities”, construction in emerging markets is expected to double within a decade and will become a $6.7 trillion business by 2020. In order to benefit from the trends identified in the construction industry, companies need to look at strategies to better position themselves to manage the supply side and capture the increased demand. PPC Ltd, as a world class provider of building materials and solutions into the basic services sector, is already using this insight to drive its growth and development. PPC has an approved agreement to source waste tyres as alternative fuel.

I

The company is currently receiving approximately 8000 tonnes per annum of waste tyres for use in cement kilns in the Western Cape from REDISA (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa). The waste tyres supplied by REDISA are utilised as a substitute (through co-processing) for up to 20% of current coal usage. At PPC, indications are that waste tyres will replace 15% of coal usage at its De Hoek plant alone. Energy scarcity in the Western Cape is one of the reasons why high-energy users look into the use of alternative fuels. The co-processing of waste in cement kilns not only reduces cost but also reduces carbon emissions from cement manufacturers and reduces the need for non-renewable energy. “With an increased focus on the sustainable use of resources and environmentally friendly waste management practises to support thegrowth in demand, it made business sense for us to look at alternative sources of energy for

our cement plants,” said John Vorster, General Manager at PPC De Hoek. In addition, the ecological benefits of replacing coal with waste tyres as an energy source include conserving resources and reducing waste-disposal requirements. The benefit of using waste tyres also means that “additional new business operations can be established and the use of the tyres saves fossil fuels,” add Vorster. According to REDISA CEO Hermann Erdmann, “Given that the world will be home to 5 billion middle class consumers within the next 20 years, natural resources are being placed under increasing stress to meet housing, product and lifestyle demands. To reduce this pressure, REDISA has realised that waste should be looked at differently; not as waste but as something with value." "It is commendable that the country’s cement industry is realising the value in waste tyres as a fuel source, thereby reducing the need Enquiry No: 58 for coal.”

Renewable energy for rural school

n early March, Vuvu Junior Secondary School in Mount Fletcher, Eastern Cape gained access to electricity for the first time since it opened its doors in 18 June 2004. What makes Vuvu different to other schools and communities is that its power won’t be drawn from the municipal power grid. Instead Vodacom will now supply renewable energy to the school and to the community through its solar-powered base station in the area. Providing renewable energy to Vuvu follows a successful pilot project launched in Emfihlweni, Northern Kwa Zulu Natal in 2012 as well as a second project in Kisarawe, Tanzania in 2013. The Vuvu school project consists of a 7.5kW solar array which is sufficient to power both the Vodacom base station as well as the entire school. In addition, the solar installation has led to a 60% saving on fuel normally consumed at the site and a reduction in generator run time of 3-4 hours per day.

Maya Makanjee, Chief Officer Corporate Affairs at Vodacom said: “Powering rural communities with excess energy from Vodacom’s green base station is not only a game changer for rural areas that have no access to power, but it also increases the quality of education learners receive by providing access to learning after daylight as well as access to technology and equipment only electricity can enable”. “Critically, this type of partnership with schools and communities shows how mobile operators such as Vodacom can bridge the energy divide in communities by oversupplying base stations with renewable energy which can be diverted to critical points within the community.” Access to electricity is a key enabler of social

and economic development, so this initiative is extremely important to the community. Without electricity, learners would perhaps never have access to computer training or the Internet, which could severely hamper their ability to progress. The project in Emfihlweni has already seen the matric pass rate improve year on year and was 75% at the end of 2015. Vodacom has, as part of the project, established a computer centre at the school. This includes twenty computers for learners, a laptop for a teacher, a server, a white board and projector and access to Vodacom’s zero rated Enquiry No: 59 educational content.

ngen Petroleum, South Africa’s leading producer and marketer of a wide range of fuels, lubricants and oil-based products, has donated R50 000 towards renovation of the Ekuphumleni Old Age Home in Zwide, Port Elizabeth. This initiative formed part of the company’s CSI “Festive Giving” campaign, which aimed to support and uplift the spirit of local communities. The company has supported the old age home for the past five years. The official opening ceremony of the renovated building was a bitter-sweet affair as the community reflected on a tragic fire last November, which claimed the lives of three elderly male residents. The fire destroyed a large part of the building. Subsequently, the home received a major facelift thanks to the South African Navy. Forty-eight Navy artisans, including plumbers, electricians and builders assisted with the extensive revamp of the home.

Engen’s Corporate Social Investment Manager, Mntu Nduvane says: “We were devastated when we heard about the fire and we hope that our contribution demonstrates in some small way our commitment to uplifting the local community. It is essential to restore and revive Ekuphumleni Old Age Home as it is the only facility catering for the aged community in the Nelson Mandela Metro Township area.” Funds were raised as part of Engen’s Employee Community Partnership Programme. This programme encourages Engen employees to play a meaningful role in their communities. Tasneem Sulaiman-Bray, Engen General Manager: Corporate Affairs added: “We wish the residents of Ekuphumleni Old Age Home all the very best in their new home. We sincerely hope it will impart a sense of dignity and renewed pride in the folk who reside there.” Enquiry No: 60
