ESPITE the subdued economic conditions in the country, more than 80% of businesses surveyed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber are investing in their companies this year. The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Membership Survey 2016 was conducted earlier this year amongst our member companies in Nelson Mandela Bay. Of the respondents who indicated that they would invest in their businesses this financial year, 38% said they would invest in human resources and infrastructure; 24% only in human resources and 22% in infrastructure. However, the respondents cited several challenges affecting their Nelson Mandela Bay companies’ bottom line including political insta-

bility, the shrinking economy, unemployment, the Rand/Dollar exchange rate, raw material pricing, high taxes and petrol price increases. High electricity prices were one of the biggest challenges faced by businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay (33.6%), followed by unreliable supply of electricity (25%) and bad maintenance or poor road infrastructure (17%) according to the Survey findings. As the authoritative voice of business in the region, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has positioned itself to address the challenges affecting the sustainability of our member companies. Electricity, water and roads make up the core of our Priority Focus Areas for 2016 and we have also recently aligned our task teams to these priorities. Our Business Chamber task
team volunteers play a critical role in delivering on these key priority areas. Other core priority focus areas in the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Strategy include Transport and Logistics, Metro Collaboration and SME Development. We are pleased with the results of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber Membership Survey 2016 and the confidence shown in Our Business Chamber by our members. 96% of respondents said they would recommend becoming a member of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber to fellow businesses. We value all the feedback we received from our member companies and are being responsive to suggestions made by the respondents. I would like to invite and encourage all businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay to get involved
with the Business Chamber, whether as a task team volunteer or attending a networking function. Tangible value was received by 35% of respondents who attended a networking event hosted by the Business Chamber, who formed a business relationship, met a new client or received a professional referral as a result of the event. Respondents also listed skills development for staff (20%) and a change in the way they do business (22%) as other results of attending a Business Chamber networking event. This shows the true value of connecting with other businesses on the Business Chamber platforms. Kevin Hustler, CEO Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber

SA’s flagship container port unveils investment
wo new landmarks at the Port of Ngqura, which are part of ongoing developments to position the port as a container transhipment hub for Sub-Saharan Africa, were officially launched by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) recently. The new landmarks are the port’s state-ofthe-art administration building and an administration craft basin for pilot boats and tugboats, including office facilities for operational staff working on these craft. Also included in TNPA’s latest R700 million investment into the port is the vacuum based automated mooring technology pioneered at Ngqura last year. The 26 mooring units were designed, custom manufactured and installed to meet the specific environmental conditions of the port. TNPA Chief Executive, Richard Vallihu, said: “These three major operational projects form part of Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy which is now in its fourth year of implementation and which aims to enable the effective, efficient and economic functioning of an integrated port system to promote economic growth.” “Under the Transnet MDS TNPA will invest R56 billion over the next 10 years across South Africa’s ports. These three projects at the Port of Ngqura represent an investment of R700 million,” he added. Ngqura Port Manager, Mpumi Dweba, said:
“Such endeavours support the tremendous growth of the Port of Ngqura and match its profile as a world-class container hub, which is encouraging significant investment in the region. They are designed to improve port efficiency at our port and are boosting the economy of the Eastern Cape in the short term by creating additional jobs.” Dweba added: “Specifically during the construction phase of the admin building and admin craft basin we have so far created 154 jobs at a cost of over R18 million – all of which goes into the Eastern Cape economy. Forty eight of these jobs have been created for Black youth, while 285 Eastern Cape employees are also benefiting from skills development programmes associated with these projects. “In addition, 16 small businesses in the Eastern Cape have been engaged to provide materials, equipment and services at a cost of R4.36 million – a further injection into the local economy.” She said that in the longer term these projects would help ensure the ongoing success of the province, the country and the region by supporting the Port of Ngqura to flourish as the major transhipment hub for sub-Saharan Africa and an important link connecting trade between South America and Asia. Construction of the R255 million administration building, which will be one of the premier
‘green’ buildings in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, is well underway with completion targeted for the end of this year. To date Ngqura has operated without an administration craft basin for the docking of marine craft such as pilot boats and tugboats, as well as various vessels belonging to SAPS and SANPARKS. The new R362 million administration craft basin located at the root of the eastern breakwater in the port basin will facilitate this proces.

EDA Nelson Mandela Bay ICT Incubator (SNII) recently announced the opening of a new technology research and development (R&D) centre, located on-site at its Newton Park technology office business park in Port Elizabeth. The SNII R&D Lab offers assistance and support to creatives, entrepreneurs, and small businesses in PE to design and develop apps, software solutions, as well as electronic and mechanical device prototypes. It forms part of SNII’s technology infrastructure support service to clients enrolled in the centre’s incubation programme and for small businesses and entrepreneurs in Nelson Mandela Bay. “This is a giant step forward for sustainable SMME development in the ICT sector in Nelson Mandela Bay,”said Scott Zambonini, Enterprise Development Manager at SNII.
In particular, the SNII R&D Lab allows users of the service and facility to develop new technology solutions and own the intellectual property and patents on what they develop. The main advantages of the R&D Lab is the rapid rendering of technology ideas and concepts into concrete solutions with major cost- and time-saving benefits. In particular, this will help SNII incubator clients and technology entrepreneurs to get new products, services and solutions to the market much faster, explained Zambonini. “The SNII R&D Lab offers access to integrated technologies, specialist resources and development support which will enable tech entrepreneurs and small business to design, visualise and create prototypes." “Companies with existing technology-based solutions or products will also be able to use the R&D Lab as a facility for upgrading, expanding and evolving products and services,” he said. A dedicated team of development experts has been appointed as the design support backbone of the R&D Lab. The programmers are literate in a variety of major design programming languages including Javascript, C#, Android Development, Google API’s, SQL, SQLite, MySQL, Python, F#, Matlab and HTML. Developers will work closely with and under the direction and supervision of tech entrepreneurs and SNII incubator clients to produce cuttingedge, technology-based products, services and solutions. “The R&D Lab is envisioned as the city’s technology innovation epicentre,” said Zambonini. “The Lab will improve technological innovation in sectors of Nelson Mandela Enquiry no: 5 Bay’s regional economy,"

he South African government is on a nation-wide drive to stimulate the “blue” or maritime economy, and aptly named . And rightfully so, as despite boasting a massive 800km of coastline, and three ports, including two industrial development zones, the Eastern Cape has yet to cash-in fully on Operation Phakisa, the drive by the South African government to energise South Africa’s “blue” or maritime economy. While there has been significant investment in the ports of Ngqura and Port Elizabeth, the East London port has not seen any major investment in years. We have seen little of the promised R2.5 billion investment announced by Transnet National Ports Authority in 2014. Hopefully this will change with the Eastern Cape Maritime Summit being hosted in East London this year, by placing the city under the national spotlight. South Africa is one of the top 15 shipping countries in the world in terms of the tonnage transported to

and from its ports. This presents significant opportunity in the movement of goods, ship repair, ship chandlers and others services. Former navy commander and current CEO of the South African Marine Safety Association, Tsietsi Mokhele, respected as one of the continent’s greatest leaders, reprimanded the Eastern Cape at a summit in Port Elizabeth last year for lagging the rest of the country in this area. A year later, it would be interesting to know whether any real progress has been made? The development of port infrastructure and efficiencies are central to maritime economic stimulation, as is the continued growth of the East London IDZ within the Border-Kei region. While these major players will continue to facilitate opportunity, the private sector is required to partner them by grasping incentives and scanning the global economic landscape for business opportunities.
These types of summits and exhibitions are heavily supported by government and rightly so – they are a major stakeholder. However, they are not the drivers of the economy – business is, and that’s why I believe this particular summit will be a success. With vastly superior shipping times and port controls than any other port in the country, and the lack of previous investment – East London companies are ready to do business. The Eastern Cape Maritime Summit will be hosted at The Venue at Hemingways in East London during Transport Month, October 26-28, with entrance to the exhibition is free to pre-registered trade delegates, scholars and students. A signature has been defined as a person’s name written in a distinctive way as a form of identification in authorising a document. However, the courts have accepted any mark made by a person in order to identify it as that person’s authorising act. So, for example, the courts have recognised that documents may be signed with an “X” in certain circumstances, and have also accepted a mark made by another person as being a person’s signature. The ECT Act envisages two types of signatures; an “electronic signature” and an “advanced electronic signature”. An ordinary “electronic signature” is electronic information (e.g. a typed name) associated with other data (e.g. the text of an email) and logically intended by the user to serve as a signature. An advanced electronic signature is a signature which results from a process approved by the .za Domain Name Authority (which is an organisation established in terms of the ECT Act). The ECT Act states that where a signature is required by law, and the law does not specify the type of signature, then the signature requirement in relation to a data message (e.g. an email) is only met if an advanced electronic signature is used. On the other hand, and importantly, where a signature is required by the parties to a transaction (as opposed to being required by law), and the parties have not agreed the type of signature to be used, an ordinary electronic signature will suffice if a method is used to identify and indicate the person’s approval of the information communicated, and the method is reliable. When you type your name at the end of an email it is associated with the data in the email, logically associated with the text of the email and intended by you to serve as a signature. Accordingly typing your name at the end of an email will suffice for purposes of amending a contract which includes a clause stating that an amendment will not be effective unless it is in writing and signed by both parties. Given the pervasive use of email in the workplace and in commercial interactions, it is imperative to exercise caution. This can be achieved by educating employees and customers about electronic signatures and by using an email disclaimer to prevent an email message being construed as varying agreements. It may also be necessary to re-draft non-variation clauses to ensure that agreements are not unintentionally varied by email. NOTE: This information should not be regarded as legal advice and is merely provided for information purposes on various aspects of commercial law. Enquiry no: 6

ASF South Africa joined the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s InnoVenton Institute in celebrating the recent graduation of students who were part of the first intake of the Diploma in Chemical Process Technology – a pioneering course that was tailor-made to meet the critical scarce-skills needs in the South African chemical processing industry. Fourteen diplomats have successfully completed the course, 10 of whom have already secured jobs in various industries. In 2010, BASF, along with partner companies in the chemical industry, namely PetroSA, Umicore Catalyst SA, and Heraeus South Africa, played an integral role in the development of an industry-specific programme, which sees the chemical process industry’s skills being uplifted. Skills gaps in the chemicalrelated qualifications on offer were identified, and, together with the InnoVenton team, this group of industry leaders developed a 3-year National Diploma in Chemical Process Technology (CPT). The course, which is the only one of its kind in South Africa, was launched in 2013. It was developed in close collaboration with international experts, based on a competency profile for a
chemical process technician. The diploma programme sees process operators and controller technicians being equipped to not only control a process plant but also to support chemical and process engineers in various design and problem solving projects. Since the establishment of the CPT in 2013, BASF has sponsored a number of bursaries for students studying towards the diploma. In the founding year, BASF provided two bursaries, while 2015 saw nine students being supported by the company. Industry support extends further to on-site visits by the students to help them gain a hands-on understanding of the practical application of their studies. BASF South Africa’s Port Elizabeth Mobile Emissions Catalysts Site Director, Paul Allday, said that developing future engineers and scientists is crucial for the success of the chemical industry: “At BASF we are firmly committed to supporting the upliftment of science, mathematics and engineering programmes that will ultimately support the sustainability of our industry. We are proud to have been involved with InnoVenton over the years,” he said. Enquiry no: 8

A mistake which, according to Mark Orpen (pictured) - Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Institute of People Development (IPD) – could cost the company a lot more in the long run. ment should be seen as a constantly appreciating asset,” confirmed Orpen. “From decreasing high levels of staff turnover and costly recruitment drives, to spiking productivity, keeping up with technological changes and engaging staff, targeted skills development will always increase the organisation’s ability to compete in established markets.” Cutting skills development budgets may seem to be the answer in the short term; but the long term aftermath results in many unpleasant pitfalls. “When skills development is not made an in-house priority, companies will be forced to offer higher salaries in order to hire staff that are already equipped with the required skills. This headhunting cost can be avoided by identifying the staff already in the company’s ranks, and upskilling them to meet their potential. Talented employees that are not trained by their employers often feel undervalued, which leads to high staff turnover. For SMMEs in particular, survival depends on a loyal, constantly developing staff complement.” Consumer markets, resources management, business performance, social demands, and other economic and political drivers all place increased pressure on people to have the skills to survive at work and generate liveable wages.
According to Orpen; “Rising populations, downsizing of corporations, unemployment, job instability, technological changes and political instability all make the case for increasing skills development efforts and incentives by the government. The government’s (DoL, DoE and SETAs) investment in companies that assist them to develop the skills of the nation will be rewarded with better contributors to the GDP and improved job stability.” As the South African economy remains uncertain, the country is continuously losing highly skills, well trained people to immigration. “This increasing brain drain necessitates constant innovation and increased entrepreneurship, in order to survive economic downturns in a creative way. Through skills development, companies can successfully adopt the ‘adapt or die’ principles, ensuring that their workforces are multiskilled, diverse and able to meet varying demands,” concludes Orpen. If instant gratification is the end-goal, go ahead. Cut the training budget and enjoy the extra cash flow. Just remember that sound businesses are not built on instant gratification. Enquiry no: 11

In line with maritime tradition, the duty of officially naming the vessels was carried out by a Lady Sponsor, Linda Mabaso, Chair of Transnet SOC Limited. The project has, since inception, created at least 500 direct and 3500 indirect jobs. Mabaso named the two tugs ‘QUNU’ – in reference to the Eastern Cape home village of former President, the late Nelson Mandela – and ‘CORMORANT’ after the aquatic bird species of the same name. Tug QUNU will be allocated to the

Reliable, consistent supply at fixed monthly prices enables longterm, strategic financial and operational planning not possible with other conventional price-volatile fuel products. CNG can be used for a vast number of applications requiring a fuel or energy source such as heating, cooling, power generation, burners, furnaces, ovens, boilers, vehicles and fleet applications, used in other industrial, commercial and domestic consumptions. Using specially designed tube trailers and transported via trucks to “Daughterstations” (on customer sites) this system is able to provide a continuous, dedicated supply of CNG to customers who are too far to draw from an existing gas pipeline. Supply chain failures can be prevented
upply chain failures result in empty store shelves, infrastructure in various states of breakdown, basic services and resources that are just not available when and where they’re needed, and even increased pollution levels. All these problems are preventable if the relevant supply chains are managed by skilled professionals. Supply chain management is commonly misunderstood as public procurement, or as logistics in isolation. It is however the integrated combination of activities that balance the supply of goods and services with the demand of customers. “Every part of every product we buy needs to come from somewhere. This usually starts with raw material that need to be sourced, bought and processed by a supplier, stored somewhere, distributed to even more suppliers, and finally to end-customers. And that’s describing a very short and simple supply chain,” says Jenny Froome, General Manager of SAPICS - a professional knowledge-based association that enables individuals and organisations to improve business performance. “Most supply chains are incredibly complex, with multiple layers needing to be coordinated at the same time.” Any part of this chain of events that is not optimised for efficiency, causes a ripple effect of inefficiencies throughout the entire

supply chain, that could result in inventory loses, wasted warehousing space, extended lead times, half-empty trucks serving delivery routes and so on. All of these inefficiencies cause a business to either lose money, spend more money that it should, have unhappy customers, or a combination of these. “There is at least one supply chain in every single industry, and in most, there are several supply chains that feed into one another,” says Froome. “Aerospace, automotive manufacturing, banking services relating to cash transit, retail, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage processing, even the fashion industry all have supply chains that could benefit immensely from supply chain management by Certified Supply Chain Professionals.” Some of the issues that supply chain professionals need to take into account when planning and executing profitable supply chains include energy shortages, technological developments, labour and skills demands, and environmental concerns. The areas of expertise required to plan and maintain the balance between supply and demand is highly complex, and will be addressed during the 38th Annual SAPICS Conference for Supply Chain Management Professionals, sheduled for 12-14 June 2016.

lobally, the importance of safety compliance in several high-risk industries is no longer in question. Numerous accident and incident investigations, identify the lack of compliance with regulations, rules, and governing procedures as a central contributing factor to accidents and fatalities. “Ensuring safety is not always a given in
high-risk industries. In South Africa it is evident that there is a lack of compliance with legislated safety regulations. Safeguarding and protecting employees in the workplace is non-negotiable - no matter what the costs or challenges are,” says Jean du Randt, GM GS of the Eazi Group, Africa’s market leader in work-at-height solutions. “The trend of deploying more mobile elevat-

ed work platforms to perform work-at-height duties more efficiently, calls for proper instructions to operate machinery while following safety and compliance regulations. These are the prerequisites for the reduction of fatalities in high risk industries,” says Du Randt. In the construction, mining and energy industries it is compulsory that operators are properly instructed on how to operate any mobile elevated work platforms, forklifts and telehandlers. This extends to the lifting category where an operator of a mobile elevated work platform with a capacity of 750kg or more requires a valid license for operation. This license is renewable every two years. Note that this regulation is superseded by NCOP 2015 but should form the absolute minimum when using the equipment. Operators of machinery should always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Further, they should understand the components of the machine and its basic functions, the possible hazards in the operating area and emergency procedures in the event of an accident. According to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 the safety officer on site, together with the employer bear the ultimate responsibility for understanding and
adhering to all safety policies and procedures. This responsibility includes ensuring that all employees are knowledgeable of the Act. “Discipline and vigilance are the cornerstones of a shared safety culture. This means taking time to plan the work, comply with all the regulations, rules, and governing safety procedures, choosing the right equipment to perform the work and then ensuring proper use,” concludes Du Randt. Building a safety culture means preventing unnecessary accidents. The upfront effort and continued attention to this aspect of high-risk work will make good business sense in the Enquiry no: 14 long run.

arker Hannifin, the global leader in motion and control technologies, has introduced a new high-performance PU-cover rubber hose range for low and medium pressure applications. For the new PU-cover hose range 462PU, 692PU and 837PU-Plus, Parker has employed a combination of synthetic rubber and polyurethane. Due to the manufacturing process and the fusion of the two materials, the new hose range reaches innovative possibilities in terms of quality and product properties. The outstanding technical characteristics of rubber, employed in combination with the premium quality polyurethane cover material, makes the Parker PU-cover rubber hoses suitable for various applications where high flexibility, tight bend radii, abrasion, ozone, weathering and seawater resistance are the critical factors. The Parker PU-Cover rubber hose range share additional characteristics of strong mechanical strength; high flexibility and extended oil compatibility (due to the inner tubes); shock resistance to metal moving;
extreme resistance to wear and tear; and extraordinary damping properties. The Parker PU-cover rubber hoses make a world of difference in applications involving material handling; telehandling and fork lifts; cranes; energy chains; car production lines and robots; injection moulding and blow moulding; machine tools; and construction equipment. Due to the high performance of the PU-cover in abrasion, ozone and cold resistance, the 462PU is the preferred solution for the more demanding environment conditions in the construction equipment applications. The PU-cover also delivers the possibility to produce twin hoses at even higher working pressures than standard rubber hoses. 462PU will also answer the requirements of the larger materials handling applications where higher working pressures and higher abrasion resistance are the critical factors. The 692PU is the recommended hose for all materials handling applications.Enquiry no: 15

n challenging economic conditions, buyers in the transport and logistics industry remain under pressure to slash budgets. Sacrificing long-term optimal performance and return-on-investment for initial short-term cost savings can, however, prove to be detrimental to operational efficiency. High-quality air and electrical suzi coils are fundamentally-important components in any truck/trailer combination. New protection solution for temperature-sensitive cargo E mirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates Airline, has launched a next-generation version of its innovative protection product for valuable temperaturesensitive cargo, such as pharmaceutical products. Called White Cover Advanced, it utilises DuPont’s patented Tyvek material made of high density polyethylene to form a tough protective barrier against varying external temperatures and direct sunlight. The special material is water resistant to prevent moisture damage while at the same time breathable, thereby reducing condensation and dryness. It is also environmentally friendly and is 100% recyclable. The White Cover Advanced is an enhanced offering to Emirates SkyCargo’s existing White Cover solution. While the White Cover is used in the carrier’s cool chain solutions for perishables, such as vegetables and
fresh fruits, the White Cover Advanced offers additional protection for packaged pharmaceutical shipments in Controlled Room Temperature (CRT) range and in insulated packaging. Weighing no more than three kilograms for Emirates’ largest passenger aircraft pallet, the special sheet completely encloses the shipment and allows for cooling during transportation and cold storage. Application is also very efficient.
“The pharmaceutical industry moves products worth over US$ 1 trillion annually. Temperature changes during transportation can pose a serious threat to the integrity of these sensitive products. They must be kept within different control room temperature (CRT) bands in accordance with the revised EU Good Distribution Practice. The White Cover Advanced, with its silver-coating technology, provides a reliable and affordable means of protecting these products from temperature spikes during air transportation,” said Henrik Ambak, Senior Vice President, Emirates’ Cargo Operations Worldwide. Emirates SkyCargo is a pioneer in the use of specialized covers to protect temperature-sensitive cargo and has worked with DuPont in developing applications of its Tyvek material in the air cargo industry. the reputation of companies found to have used inferior products. South African Readymix Association (SARMA) general manager, Johan van Wyk, says that readymix concrete is a prime example of a product that cannot be produced much more cheaply without cutting corners. The required hydraulic flow range (L/min) is now 42-86 for both units compared to 30-86 on the B-Series. Brush speed is also marginally up across the board. facturers’ prices will be within a fairly narrow band as a result of fixed input costs. These relate to raw materials, capital equipment, labour, transport and other costs and do not differ very much from supplier to supplier. Where larger producers may gain a cost advantage over smaller operators for materials, the smaller ones may make up for these on lower capital repayments or payrolls. This ultimately has the effect of levelling the playing fields and resulting in a threshold where prices are acceptable and producers remain profitable. “Where alarm bells should be
sounding for building and procurement professionals is when a supplier suddenly arises that far undercuts the usual suppliers. Then the question should be asked whether the supplier is Sarma accredited or has any other quality certification in place such as ISO 9001 or similar. A perfect weld
T
he variety of welding procedures and their requisite shielding gases makes welding a complex and intricate process. In this highly specialised field, so critical to many manufacturing processes, it is important to know that you are getting the best advice. Air Products’ Welding Specialist, Sean Young, is well-placed to offer such advice. With a broad knowledge of welding gases and their applicability to specific welding procedures, Young spends much of his time advising customers on how their choice of gas mix can have a profound impact not only on the weld quality, but on long-term cost-effectiveness. “Sometimes it can take a bit of convincing that the cheapest option is not always the most cost-effective. But for a customer who is looking to make sensible long-term decisions, choosing the
best gas mix for a specific procedure can save money and increase efficiencies in the long run,” says Young. “As an active gas, carbon dioxide used to be the gas of choice - and while it can be effective for a faster and deeper weld, because it is quick freezing, it tends to cause spatter. Using a mixture of active and inert gases, such as our Magmix 3 can reduce post-weld activity – leading to a better weld for the long-term.” Choosing a gas mix depends entirely on the type and thickness of the metal to Enquiry no: 27 be welded.

Now, this leading crane hire operation is a prominent contractor in the South African government’s very successful Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) programme where it is working alongside multi-national specialists in “green” energy projects. Cornelis Grotius, general manager of Johnson Crane Hire’s heavy lift division, says the establishment of Johnson Renew provides the group with the focus
it needs to grow its presence in the wind energy market, as well as other key renewable energy projects. This includes Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects, where the company’s transport solution as part of its full turnkey capability is expected to add significant value. Already, Johnson Crane Hire has undertaken lifts for Vestas and Siemens and, more recently, it mobilised its team to the Gibson Bay Wind Farm construction site. Here, it is also supplying support cranes for the loading and offloading of various components making up the wind generators, complementing its main crane lifting solutions on site. Johnson Renew has access to the largest Liebherr crane fleet in southern Africa through Johnson Crane Hire, ranging from eight ton units all the way through to the 750t LR 1750 crawler crane. Strategically, Johnson Crane Hire also owns one of two LG 1750 latticeboom truck mount cranes in the country, procured specifically to work on wind projects. Enquiry no: 29

Case offers ZF types of transmission with a torque converter lock-up system that provides an increase in torque of up to 70% for heavy tasks requiring extra
traction and can be locked for less demanding work. When lock-up is engaged, the transmission operates in directdrive mode, with electronic shift change for the six forward and three reverse gears. This mode, with increased fuel efficiency, does not require extra torque and is therefore ideal for levelling and spreading. When lock-up is disengaged by the operator at the push of a button, the transmission reverts back to working with the torque converter. Lock-up engages automatically to match torque and engine speed - as long as the pre-set electronic transmission module parameters are met. The Case de-clutch system, which is activated when the operator applies brakes, improves handling speeds for tools, including the blade, ripper and scarifier. Enquiry no: 30

Safe and reliable drinking water transportation
W
ater is an essential ingredient in the brewing and beverage industry – not only as a constituent of drinks, but also for processing and cleaning. As water is intended for human consumption, it is subject to stringent guidelines. The hoses transporting water for human consumption have to be approved for use with drinking water and labelled accordingly. So is the Aquapal, the robust and ultra-flexible drinking water hose from ContiTech now available in South Africa. For the most commonly used rated widths, this high-quality hose was the very first drinking water hose to qualify in all statutorily mandated tests for drinking water hoses. The inner lining of the brand-name hose is homogeneous, smooth and free of plasticizers. In addition, it is absolutely odour- and taste-neutral, a property indispensable for drinking water applications. In addition, Aquapal tolerates all authorized disinfecting agents. Its wear-resistant NBR cover, resistant to UV radiation, ozone and grease, ensures long service life, even under harsh conditions. The robust and highly flexible drinking water hose has a maximum working pressure of 20 bar and is approved for the transportation of drinking water up to 90°C as well as for outdoor use. Aquapal can be used in steam applications with a maximum temperature tolerance of 130°C. Due to its high flexibility, it can be overrun (except construction with steel wire helix). he organic clean-up of the largest freshwater lake in the Nelson Mandela Bay region is yielding positive results, with the water body set to be “swimmer-ready” during the course of this year, results show. Water quality test results from the North End Lake reveal a marked improvement in various critical parameters, suggesting that the tide is finally turning on pollution levels which in the past have seen it unsuitable for swimming events where participants come into direct contact with contaminants. According to Rhino Water director Sarel Bam, whose company was appointed by stadium operator Access Leisure and Facilities Management to conduct the organic cleanup – or bioremediation – of the lake, the toxic blue-green algae, faecal coliforms and E. coli levels dropped substantially between January and March. The downward trend was significant, said Bam, and a clear indication that the North End Lake’s bioremediation was taking effect in spite of a continued influx of toxins and other pol-
lutants into the lake. He added that anecdotal evidence such as a marked increase in the number of young fish, or fingerlings, also suggested an improvement. The most recent test results reveal that inorganic materials such as dissolved metals and minerals now meet the national SANS 241 specifications for drinking water. Algae and bacterial levels have also dropped significantly, although still remain above the acceptable standards for recreational use set by
the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). Further good news is that pollutant sludge levels on the floor of the North End Lake have decreased by up to 20cm. The second phase of the project, which started on January 6, will continue until the end of June when another update will be provided. The bioremediation process has involved dosing the lake with an imported proprietary product containing natural bacteria and coenzymes to effectively lift and digest sludge from the bottom of the lake and remediate the water. “Our dosing regime currently involves spraying 3 400 litres of product into the lake on a weekly basis,” said Bam. Gabions built by consulting engineers Africoast at various water entry points have also helped to contain the inflow of solid waste such as plastic bags. This two-part process was envisaged to work together to enable the holistic remediation of the water body. Enquiry no: 34

Water treatment plant for power plant
V
eolia Water Technologies South Africa has been awarded the contract to supply all the mechanical and electrical componentry and equipment for a complete water treatment plant (WTP) for the new Kpone Independent Power Plant (KIPP) in Ghana. Comprising pre-treatment, two rounds of desalination processes, demineralisation and potable water treatment plants, the WTP will be used within the power station to meet demineralisation water and service requirements, and produce potable water. Located within 1 km of the Atlantic Ocean, which is the plant’s water source, KIPP will be the largest independent power plant in Ghana when operations commence in 2017. It is a 350 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Plant, which will account for approximately 10% of Ghana’s total installed capacity. The project, acquired through an open tender issued by Group 5, was awarded to Veolia in September 2015 with the envisaged WTP commissioning date set for the end of 2016.
“Project work is already underway with our engineering team currently conducting the basic engineering design phase,” says Jaco Oosthuizen, Technical Manager: Industrial, Veolia Water Technologies South Africa. The hazard and operability study (HAZOP) has been conducted and is now followed by the long lead time item procurement and detailed design, with construction of skid mounted equipment to be carried out in Veolia’s Sebenza workshop. Veolia’s full scope of work includes the planning, designing, construction and testing of the skid-mounted plants delivered to Durban port. The skids include seawater pre-treatment comprising clarification and filtration, first pass seawater desalination (with a capacity of 3.1 mega litres per day) and second pass brackish water desalination, a mix bed ion exchange demineralisation plant and a potable water treatment plant. “One of the project’s key objectives is to maximise South African content,” Oosthuizen points out, “which means that the majority of

Hybrid laser analyser for continuous gas analysis
E
merson has announced the release of the Rosemount CT5100 continuous gas analyser, the world’s only hybrid analyser to combine Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) and Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) measurement technologies for process gas analysis and emissions monitoring. The CT5100 is the latest offering in the Emerson CT5000 series, providing the most comprehensive analysis available as it can detect down to sub ppm level for a range of components, while simplifying operation and significantly reducing costs. Unlike traditional continuous gas analysers, the CT5100 can measure up to 12 critical component gases and potential pollutants simultaneously within a single system – meeting local, state, national, and international regulatory requirements. The CT5100 operates reliably with no consumables, no in-field enclosure, and a simplified sampling system that does not require any gas conditioning to remove moisture. The new gas analyser is ideally suited for process gas analy-

sis, continuous emissions moni toring, and ammonia slip appli-Enquiry no: 34 cations. “The increase in regulatory requirements worldwide, along with the decrease in experienced personnel in industrial plants, have paved the way for the emergence of a new generation of faster, more accurate, and easier-to-use measurement technologies,” said Ruth Lindley, Product Manager for QCL analysers at Emerson. “The CT5100 represents an important next step in that direction, providing unmatched sub-second response time for precise, reliable measurement of complex gases and emissions to ensure regulatory compliance and prevent costly fines or unexpected shutdowns. The CT5100 is a unique combination of advanced technology, high reliability, and rugged design. Its “laser chirp” technique expands gas
analysis in both the near- and mid-infrared range, enhancing process insight, improving overall gas analysis sensitivity and selectivity, removing cross interference, and reducing response time. The laser chirp technique produces sharp, well-defined peaks from high resolution spectroscopy that enable specificity of identified components with minimum interference and without filtration, reference cells, or chemometric manipulations. “The CT5100 was designed to give the plant more for less,” said Dave McMillen, North America business development manager for Emerson’s Cascade laser analysers. “Solid-state components and the unique modular design with up to six lasers inside a single enclosure simplify start up and commissioning and reduce field maintenance costs during the Enquiry no: 35 analyser’s lifecycle.”
Economical submersible waste water pump
SB Pumps and Valves has released its highly efficient range of Amarex KRT submersible motor pumps for handling municipal and industrial waste water in an effective and cost effective manner. Taking their cue from previous models, KSB engineers have further improved the operating reliability and hydraulic efficiency to squeeze more out of the pump. By focusing on the typical operating ranges of waste water pumping stations the developers have adjusted the impellers’ free passages to not only comply with the applicable standard, but also to allow the pumps to offer as broad a range of applications as possible. Available with four different improved impeller types, the submersible motor pumps can achieve a maximum flow rate of 10,080 m³ per hour and a head of 120 m.
With 850 kW of power on tap, it offers the highest standard motor power available on the market today. Despite this, KSB electric drives for these modern submersible motor pumps are ultra-efficient. Depending on a system’s load profile, users can choose a highly efficient motor variant which corresponds to the IE3 efficiency level for standardised motors in accordance with the IEC-60034-30 standard. Such motors are particularly interesting for powerful pumps with a high start-up frequency. Two bi-directional mechanical seals reliably protect the motor space against ingress of water. A chamber filled with environmentally friend-
ly oil ensures cooling and lubrication of the mechanical seals even when gas-laden fluids have to be pumped. Generously dimensioned ball bearings sealed for life support the stainless steel shaft with a special focus also being placed on the design of the cable gland. Individual conductors stripped, tinned and sealed in resin ensure that the cable gland is absolutely watertight even in the event of damage to the cable sheath or the insulation. This also effectively protects the pump from short circuits. To ensure that the pumps can be easily dismantled even after years of operation under tough conditions, all wetted screwed connections are made of stainless steel. For transporting acid waste water, too, KSB also supplies pumps made from high-grade stainless and acid-resistant duplex steel. Enquiry no: 36

Low maintenance solution to hazardous dust build-up he mining environment faces constant T challenges from heavy dust loads generated by the mining process. These include
health risks to underground mining personnel, damage to electrical equipment, and increasingly rigorous environmental legislation. The problem is exacerbated by mine ventilation systems, consisting of large fans that force air down ducts into the mine shafts and underground working areas, carrying hazardous airborne dust in increasing quantities and densities. An effective and practical solution to these challenges can be found in inertial spin filters - technology which is attracting increasing interest in the mining industry, according to Ian Fraser, Managing Director of RTS Africa Engineering. “More and more, RTS inertial spin filters are being accepted as an effective solution to dust build-up in underground mining operations, particularly in control panel and VSD back channel cooling applications. Dust can be a major problem in mining, notably in working spaces and control rooms – spin filters offer a number of advantages, the most compelling being that they require virtually no mainteEnquiry no: 39 nance,” says Fraser.

ontingency plans to ensure the availability of LPG for domestic and commercial use ahead of the winter months are well underway, confirmed Afrox, the leading distributor of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in sub-Saharan Africa. The Handigas supplier is making every effort to stockpile imported gas to supplement reserves obtained from local oil refineries. The first shipment of LPG was due in Richards Bay
early May and Afrox has reinforced its transport infrastructure to ensure prompt delivery of gas from the port to customers. However, Afrox warns that while it has been investing in new Handigas cylinders over the last two years, the industry continues to be plagued by illegal filling and this could lead to cylinder shortages at peak demand during winter. “While we are trying to ensure increased availability of LPG and cylinders, we would urge the public to get their Handigas right now to avoid the last-minute rush which creates the supply chain bottlenecks we see every year,” says Gerhard van Wyk, Business Development Manager LPG at Afrox. “Past winters have been characterised by shortages of locally produced LPG and available cylinders in South Africa, exacerbated by the instability of electricity supply at this time of the year and increased LPG demand due to residential and business users increasingly switching to Handigas as a more reliable source of energy,” adds van Wyk. Ocean economy, agro-industry boost for EC O cean economy and agroprocessing which leverage the province’s substantial natural resources are leading the way for economic transformation says the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism. With over 800 kilometres of coastal line, the province is working hard with other national departments and agencies to unlock investment opportunities in aquaculture, oil and gas, ship and boatbuilding, oil rig repair, and bunkering, amongst others. The Department said the province’s three ports were also suc-
cessfully positioning the province as a strategic gateway to Africa. Furthermore, both IDZs had taken the development of their aquaculture development zones (ADZs) seriously and had made significant headway in their establishment. In total, 470 hectares had been earmarked for the ADZs at the local IDZs. The East London IDZ’s ADZ had the potential to unlock 2,000 direct jobs. In the current financial year, the East London IDZ will finalise the construction of aquaculture facilities. It has already secured two investors - MT2 Fish Cultures and Brightwater Aquaculture.
The Coega IDZ has commenced with the development of its ADZ where it would create space for abalone, finfish, seaweed, Tilapia farming and aquaponics farming. Further inland, the Department with ECDC, has funded the Camdeboo satellite aquaculture farm which produces barbel fish. The current funding by the Department is being utilised to install alternative energy to ensure efficient operations of the farm. Another sector receiving attention is agriculture where initiatives plan to leverage “one of the province’s most valued resources”. For example, one of the Coega IDZ’s most recent agro-processing investments is a sugar processing

company which is to construct an R 85million multi-user facility in the zone. Meanwhile, in Berlin, the East London IDZ has identified a location
for the development of an agro-industrial park. The Department says the project has the potential to strengthen various commodity value chains, whilst also facilitating downstream investment in the region. The Department also mentioned that in the past financial year, it had supported the revival of the chicory industry through the signing of an agreement with Nestle. It, together with the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, provided R5 million towards ramping up production by ChicorySA and black chicory producers from Ndlambe, Makana and Peddie. Innovative new welding machine
I
n an effort to improve efficiencies and deliver quality products to customers ahead of time, Chromium Carbide (CrC) liner plate expert RioCarb has invested in a superior welding machine that has enabled the company to deliver 1 km worth of its standard RC700 overlay pipeline to a power generation plant. The pipes are used in the power generation process at the plant for deashing. Coal and pulverised fuel go through burners and generate power and energy. After the process the material turns to ash, which needs to be removed from the plant through the pipes. Rio-Carb director Colin Maine explains that the machine to manufac-

This project formed part of the Triennial Premix Tender Works Packages. It involved upgrading roads in Walmer Township, and in addition to creating jobs, simultaneously provided local community members with an opportunity of learning valuable skills. In total 25 people were hired and were upskilled in a number of areas,
namely; the laying of pavers, kerbs and channels; the pricing of future tenders; the management of labour and invoicing. What were once dusty gravel roads were transformed into aesthetically pleasing and practical low-maintenance surfaces using 80mm interlock pavers manufactured by Port Elizabeth based Shukuma Bricks. School shoes for learners
hildren at Mooiplass Public Primary School in the impoverished Mzwini village in the Eastern Cape received 80 new pairs of school shoes recently. These children would often stay away from school in cold or rainy weather because they don’t have school shoes or any kind of shoes suited to wear during cold and rainy weather. Some of the children who braved the cold and windy conditions came to school in shoes that were damaged, the wrong size or even sandals, where they eagerly waited for a new pair of shoes and some stationery from SANRAL. The initiative, motivated by Lindokuhle Mahlangeni - SANRAL
Southern Regional project manager in training, was in response to extreme poverty seen at the school by SANRAL staff working in the community. Mahlangeni competed in the 56km Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon this year with the aim of raising 56 pairs of school shoes. One for every kilometer completed, hence #56SCHOOLSHOESCHALLENGE. “The original idea was for companies to identify an individual from my running club, Vukani Multi Sports Club
(MSC), or even the race and sponsor 56 shoes, one for every kilometer completed,” he said. Enquiry no: 59

Spread your wings and fly,” was the theme and overriding message for the group of 100 matric girls invited to attend the eighth annual Port Elizabeth Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) Grade 12 Workshop, held at Linkside High School recently. This is one of the BWA’s key initiatives since 2009,reaching out to young girls preparing for their future after school.
The inspiring and informative workshop, presented to learners from 10 schools in the city, covered motivational topics such as “Be a warrior and not a worrier,” presented by Nozibele Qamngana (external relations manager at Ubuntu Education Fund) to making an impact during the recruitment process by Zena King (King Recruitment) and the pitfalls in the social media minefield by Liesl Fourie (lawyer, NMMU).
BWA chairperson Michelle Brown urged the girls to follow the organisation’s philosophy by passing on their newfound knowledge. “At BWA we strive to lead the way for younger generations of businesswomen to develop, be empowered and inspired so that they, in turn, can leave a legacy for others to follow,” she said. This year, participating schools included Cillie, Linkside, Walmer, Booysens Park, Ethembeni Enrichment Centre, Alexander Road, Otto du Plessis, Andrew Rabie, Tamsanqa High School and the Ubuntu Education Fund. Students from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s voluntary leadership programme, Beyond the Classroom (BTC), helped bridge the generations and facilitated networking and discussion amongst the girls from different schools and backgrounds. The key sponsors at the 2016 event were Global Load Control, Price WaterhouseCoopers, GDL Photography and NMMU.

E
arly Inspiration and Siyaya Skills Institute are now proud CSI (Corporate Social Investment) partners of leading software development house SMSPortal. Early Inspiration’s guiding vision is to change children’s lives in South Africa. The Port Elizabeth-based organisation directly and indirectly positively impacts almost 10 000 children that it is working to develop into ambitious, confident, knowledgeable and dynamic leaders through teacher training, home visits and parent programmes in underprivileged communities. SMSPortal’s support has meant many more teachers can be trained in communities around PE. SMSPortal has also been fortunate to work with Siyaya Skills Institute and was so impressed with the enthusiasm displayed by the organisation’s management and trainers, that it entered into learnership agreements with 14
historically-disadvantaged and disabled learners who are now being equipped with valuable skills to help them better compete in the job market. According to Charles Stretch, SMSPortal managing director, “Setting up skills development institutes such as Siyaya was a brilliant initiative. Ensuring they achieve their goals requires the support of business and I’d encourage more firms to get involved for the sake of a brighter South African future. We love the fact that we are involved with both sides of the CSI coin, so to speak. We’re working with Early Inspiration to build good foundations and with Siyaya to create great workers.” SMSPortal covers all the training fees for the Siyaya learners and they are also paid a monthly stipend which greatly increases the chances they will finish their courses as they are able to sustain themselves during training. Focus on cutting food waste
M
inimising food waste will be a key issue at Africa’s largest food retail exhibition in Johannesburg in June. As southern Africa recovers from one of its severest droughts and comes to terms with soaring food prices, the real cost of waste has never been more relevant. Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) is the continent’s biggest food and beverage expo and alongside hundreds of exhibitor, it plays host to the three-day conference The Food Forum, from June 19 to 21 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. First details of the Food Forum conference programme and speakers have been released today by the organiser dmg-ems Africa and as well as food waste, their will be sessions on the future of Halal food in the region and preserving the region’s food supply. “In conjunction with our partners, we will run a combination of panel debates and speaker presentations over the three days covering the spectrum of issues affecting the food market in
Africa,” said Christine Davidson, Vice President of dmg-ems Africa. The session titled “Is a bestbefore code really necessary and what is the cost of food wasted each year?” will focus on the difference between best before and expiry dates, understanding the law and where money can be saved. Alongside that session, the Food Forum will also host a panel discussion of food supply in southern Africa. It looks at the main challenges facing the region – especially following the winter drought – and how food exports can continue to meet foreign orders but still ensure food supply for the population. AB7 attracts manufacturers, retailers, distributors and exporters so its conference programme also includes sessions on developments in the trade. “We will be looking at the supply in the hospitality sector to hear what chefs, hoteliers and restaurateurs want but also finding out what suppliers have had success with around the world,” Enquiry no: 62 said Davidson.
