Automated mooring system up and running

T

he automated mooring system at the Port of Ngqura is poised to improve port efficiency and safety, cementing the deep water port’s position as a leading transshipment hub for the Sub-Saharan region. The system comprises 26 mooring units, the last of which arrived at the port in March. “Procured from global engineering group, Cavotec, the mooring units were designed, custom manufactured and installed to meet the specific environmental conditions of the port. They will complement manual berthing teams by stabilising container vessels on the quayside at the click of a button, reducing docking and undocking times from

between 10 and 40 minutes to less than 10 seconds,” said Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Chief Executive, Richard Vallihu. In addition, he said that TNPA is excited to be leading the pack in the African maritime industry by acquiring this technology. Port Manager, Mpumi Dweba, added that Ngqura experiences significant long wave effects and strong winds, particularly in the winter months, which frequently cause berthed vessels to move excessively and impacts on cargo operations, safety and the port’s efficiency. “This unique vacuum based automated mooring technology is already used in a number of ports interna-

ith its parent company, MAN AG, in 2013 assigning priority status to its TopUsed vehicle divisions in Europe and South Africa, MAN Truck & Bus South Africa has issued its first independent TopUsed franchise to Port Elizabeth Truck & Bus, a subsidiary of AAD Group (Pty) Ltd, bringing MAN’s national TopUsed footprint to six dealerships. Port Elizabeth Truck & Bus (formerly AAD Truck & Bus) has been an independent MAN new vehicle sales and service dealership since 2008 and is located in Algoa Park.

Geoff du Plessis, Managing Director of MAN Truck & Bus South Africa, who headed up MAN TopUsed world-wide from 2010 to March 2013, says: “MAN has always recognised the importance of a proprietary used-vehicle division as a value-driver in the sale of its new trucks and buses. Having an MAN TopUsed dealership in Port Elizabeth linked to one of our most successful private-capital dealer partners will significantly enhance our market offering in the Eastern Cape region.” The franchise agreement for the

Technicians from Cavotec have been on site since November 2014 assembling and testing units at Berth D100, one of four berths at the Container Terminal that will be equipped with the technology. first independently-owned MAN TopUsed franchise in South Africa was signed in December 2014 and preparations started on the Port Elizabeth Truck & Bus facility to accommodate the corporate identity of the MAN TopUsed franchise. As an extension of the MAN brand, MAN TopUsed has welldefined quality management guidelines to ensure customers purchase with confidence, says Emir Solapgir, Head of MAN TopUsed SA. “There is 100 percent transparency on the status of every TopUsed truck or bus, with every vehicle on offer having undergone thorough checks to ascertain overall condition and to ensure the mileage is genuine.” MAN TopUsed sales personnel are skilled to offer fleet consulting services to customers, including optimum vehicle selection and the sourcing

Local skills transfer was a central requirement of the contract and Cavotec will upskill local mechanical and electrical companies to provide ongoing technical support, maintenance and repairs to the port. In addition, Ngqura maintenance staff have received specialised training, while operational training will take place after the units have all been installed. Installation and testing of the 26 units is underway and due for completion at the end of August 2015. Tug project going full steam ahead

T

ransnet National Port’s Authority’s R1.4 billion contract to produce nine powerful tugboats is progressing on time and within budget at the Southern African Shipyards premises in Durban. “This is a milestone project that reinforces the capacity and skill of South Africa and indeed Durban when it comes to competing in the global shipbuilding industry,” said TNPA

programme manager Eugene Rappetti, Senior Manager for Marine Operations. “Despite the challenges of energy disruptions, the project team is forging ahead and has made impressive progress, with around 11% of the fabrication and construction on the project completed thus far,” he said. The project kicked off in August 2014 and is set to provide a big boost to the local economy over its 42 month lifespan. It includes the manufacture of one of the world’s largest and most powerful harbour tugs. The new fleet of nine high quality tugs will replace ageing tugboats at the Ports of Durban, Port Elizabeth, Richards Bay and Enquiry no: 3 Saldanha.

Holbrook’s Voice

mall wonder our unemployment is so high, and that the various programmes to create jobs, is not as effective as they could be. When we consider the trade-off between the public sectors role and the private sectors role, how often do we hear the argument (by the state) “only the bottom line counts.” Put another way, create the business and we will create the infrastructure. This is the state making a case for why they do not invest in strategic infrastructure. However, many, many times this very same argument is either ignored or simply and conveniently forgotten. For this article, the writer will steer clear of the electricity debate, save a massive argument breaks out.

FROM INDUSTRIAL TO COMMERCIAL FIXTURES A wide range of products to suit your every need. C3

An Enabling Environment

But, business on the other hand assert that the biggest impediments to growth and job creation is simply, cost and the regulatory framework. More so that the current laws and amendments speak mainly to discriminatory practice. It is more difficult to stay in business than it is to start a new business, and business will never be sustainable whilst all that is happening is the slices of the same cake just get smaller, or worse, taken from one to be given to another because of legislation. A further example is the imbalance of state spending in state infrastructure. In many cases what appears to be happening is the rich get richer and the poor, poorer. For the sake of clarity. The most glaring example is state infrastructure investment in Logistics and the respective modes of transport. Many decisions taken in the current dispensation do not talk to economic and spatial priorities. Instead the various locations seem to be favoured at the expense of others. East London, is a case in point. What further exacerbates the argument, is that very little has, or is being done to fix previous and well documented imbalances. Government has not moved to mitigate the massive loss of industry in the Border / Transkei regions. Instead, locations and infrastructure has been invested elsewhere, leaving the area reeling under limited support and dwindling investment. Truly speaking, removing incentives overnight, and not replacing them has had enormous negative impact. This coupled with harmonisation has created hardships not imagined. Case in point, both importers and exporters are subject to an additional transport penalty of R 700 per container, simply because the Port of East London is not equipped to handle their goods. Instead of investing to overcome these anomalies, the state then spend more money in other Ports, to handle the increase in goods and volumes, at the exporters expense. Perhaps many pundits would predict this is the “new,” world. However, when this under investment affect the livelihoods and viability of many enterprises, and key locations such as the Transkei, the question has to be, “are we a developmental state . . . . or NOT,” and are the poor going to be left to just get poorer? Or in the writers opinion, are places / locations going to receive preference at the expense of those that need it more?

Multi-million Rand I extension for water treatment works Members of the project team, from left, Edzard Verseput (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMBM – Project Engineer), Stuart Fergusson (NMBM Acting Director of Water Management & Bulk Supply), Simon Atkins (Kaltron Project Engineer), Kiewiet Viljoen (Hidro-Tech Project Manager) and Kevin McRae (Executive Manager: Water & Sanitation at AfriCoast Consulting Engineers).

T

he second phase of a multi-million rand water works operation has been launched, aimed at increasing the amount of clean water to the residents of Port Elizabeth, at a lower cost to ratepayers. The development was announced recently by AfriCoast Consulting Engineers which has been appointed as the engineering consultancy for the R126.4-million project which will double the clean water supply from the Nooitgedagt WTW to the Nelson Mandela Bay area by February 2017. Stuart Fergusson, Acting Director of Water Management and Bulk Supply for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), said the Nooitgedagt-Coega Low Level Scheme (NCLLS) was identified as the city’s next available water augmentation project. “The Metro’s water demand is increasing at a rate in excess of three per cent per annum. To satisfy this ever increasing demand, the national Department of Water and Sanitation initiated a study to evaluate and prioritise all available water resources to the Algoa Bay region.” “The Nooitgedagt Coega Low Level Scheme was identified as the next water augmentation

project available to the Metro,” Fergusson explained. “Construction of Phase Two of the Nooitgedagt WTW has commenced and will be followed by Phase Three and a further 45Ml reservoir at Olifantskop.” The new extension includes the use of the cutting-edge filter technology and the use of ultra violet (UV) light for better quality and increased volumes of water supply to Nelson Mandela Bay, a water stressed area. “The new system is more efficient than older false-floor and nozzle systems used in the past, allowing more water to be filtered over longer periods with less frequent backwashing and cleaning of the filters needed. This, in turn leads to operational cost savings for the metro and ratepayers,” said Kevin McRae, Executive Manager for Water & Sanitation at AfriCoast Consulting Engineers. The project will double the treatment capacity of the Nooitgedagt WTW from 70-mega litres per day (Ml/d) to 140Ml/d and will also provide the new low-lift pump station to complete the NCLLS to Port Elizabeth – where construction was recently completed.

Supply Chain Management under the spotlight

he e-Tender Publication portal and the central supplier database (CSD), launched by the Office of the Chief Procurement Officer (OCPO) in April, signals a positive move towards deviation from dubious procurement practices. All eyes will be on the tools’ effectiveness, especially as government is poised to increase expenditure over the next three years from R1.24 trillion to R1.56 trillion. “The CSD follows closely on government’s announcement of various measures to ensure the development of structures and processes that aim to ensure spending is managed prudently,” said Greg Brown, Director of Governance, Risk & Compliance at LexisNexis South Africa. The CSD will interface with SARS, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission and the payroll system. It will electronically verify a supplier’s tax and BEE status, and enable public sector officials doing

business with the state to be identified. “The new B-BBEE legislation is changing the way a company’s vendor database will comply to BEE codes and standards. Whereas previously only vendors pertaining to 80% of procurement spend had to be BEE compliant, now 80% of the vendor database needs to be compliant. This means more SMEs and EMEs will need to be vetted,” said Brown. “The Public Finance Management Act and the Municipal Finance Management Act are driving strong ethical standards which impact supply chain management. Companies looking to win government business can’t afford to drop in BEE levels or to be found non-compliant.” Brown advises the following interventions to help supply chain management officers comply with the new legislation and acts. • Manage B-BBEE compliance which includes: monitoring expiry date of your certificate, procurement spend and supplier progress in

terms of B-BBEE. • Identify Enterprise Development/Supplier Development opportunities. • Combat corruption by identifying potential connections and ownership of property. • Identify possible fraudulent activity within vendors and employees with the help of South African Fraud Prevention Services and automated or online procurement management systems • Establish the business interests of employees within your organisation. • Recognise conflicts of interest within your organisation and potential partners • Vet vendors and create a preferred vendor list. • Monitor vendors on an ongoing basis. These actions are easy using LexisNexis ProcureCheck, a web based workflow system including B-BBEE compliance. The system, which links to various data bases, enables supply chain staff to access information anytime, anywhere. Its advanced reporting system notifies procurement officers of any breach or failure to meet requirements stipulated in the Public Finance Management Act (16A18.5). Enquiry no: 8

Celebrating a significant year in business

R

EFLECTING on a full and busy year of business in Nelson Mandela Bay, 2014 was indeed a historical and significant year for a number of reasons. Last year we commemorated the Business Chamber’s 150th anniversary year, which was celebrated alongside South Africa’s young and vibrant democracy of 20 years. Being the voice of organised business for 15 decades is no small feat, weathering the storms politically and economically over the years in the city we love to live and work in. As a Chamber we take pride in the fact that we are the oldest organised business institution operational in Nelson Mandela Bay, tracing back our origins to the Port Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce, which was established in 1864. We celebrated this historical milestone in a number of ways, giving our members the chance to engage with the Chamber and its vision of hope for the future. As a region, we celebrated several huge investments last year, and look forward to the momentum growing this year to firmly position Nelson Mandela Bay as an investment destination of choice. Late in May, the excitement and anticipation of many of the region’s shopaholics was finally satisfied with the opening of Baywest Mall. The R2-billion mall is set to become the region’s biggest mall with 90 000m² of gross leasable area and a parking space for about 3 200 vehicles. The two-year long construction project has employed close to 4 300 people on site and, once opened, the mall will employ a further 1 500 people. Job creation in the city is a key driver of economic change, and we welcome the thousands of jobs the mall has and will continue to create in the Bay. In March this year, Transnet celebrated a milestone with the completion of its third and fourth berths of Nelson Mandela Bay’s Ngqura container terminal. The R2-billion investment will increase the container volume capacity of the harbour from 800 000 20ft equivalent units (TEUs) to 1.5 million TEUs a year. As a chamber, we welcome more investments into the region by Transnet, as part of its R300-billion seven-year market demand strategy. In particular, we want to see the potential of the Port Elizabeth Harbour unlocked as a valuable tourism real estate site for the city, with the Port Marina development moving forward in a sustainable manner for our city. Coega remains an economic catalyst in the region, and secured double digit investment in the 2013/ 14 financial year. Leading the continent, it was the first IDZ in Africa to attract double-digit investment in one financial year. The ten investment projects worth R1.84-billion were signed and secured in 2013/2014 and at one stage last year, a total of seven companies were constructing factories and premises at the Coega IDZ including two distinct Air Separation Units by Air Products and Afrox respectively, the Dedisa Peaking Power Plant, as well as various buildings and expansions by Vector Logistics, Digistics, ID Logistics and UTi Distribution. As the Chamber, creating an environment conducive to doing business in our region is core to our identity. We look forward to continue working towards creating a competitive and sustainable city to secure future prosperity for all.

Consignees and consignors liable for overloading C

onsignees of road freight as well as those receiving loads will need to carefully manage and administrate vehicle freights to prevent prosecution in term of recently promulgated overloading legislation. In terms of the legislation authorities may prosecute both consignees of freight, as well as consignors if they are found to receive and accept over laden vehicles. The onus will also be placed on the parties to produce and keep record of every truck load undertaken for a period of at least five years while drivers should have the required load documentation with them at all times. Speaking at a transportation workshop held on behalf of the Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa (ASPASA) and

the Southern Africa Readymix Association (SARMA), road traffic legislation expert, Alta Swanepoel (pictured), advised companies, which either transport or receive regular loads of goods, to be aware of the changes in legislation in order to avoid prosecution in future. “In terms of the National Road Traffic Amendment Act, 64 of 2008, the transportation of freights such as sand, stone and concrete will need to be very carefully managed as all loads measured across the entire vehicle or per axle will need to comply with the vehicles specifications as well as legal limits. Extra precautions will also need to be made to prevent shifting loads that may cause any one axle to carry excessive weight which will deem the entire vehicle to be overloaded. “The legislation arises from Parliament instructing the Department of Transport (DOT)

Student Conference equips students for supply chain success

S

upply chain professionals are in increasing demand across a number of industries. The importance of supply chain expertise to a variety of fields was recently acknowledged at the second annual SAPICS SCNext Student Conference. “Logistics historically only referred to a specific area in the supply chain. Therefore, I would rather appoint a Supply Chain Professional to run my business who understands the complexities of the whole supply chain and the interactions between the different elements within Supply Chain Management (SCM)”, said guest speaker Hekkie van der Westhuizen (CSCP), General Manager of Dairypack. “I would much rather employ someone with a SCM qualification through a quality organisation like Sapics (Apics), because I know that this person should be well equipped to add value to my supply chain.” The attendance of students from a wide variety of learning paths at this year’s conference, hosted by SAPICS, also demonstrated a marked upswing in interest in SCM as a career. Students came from the Universities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, Tshwane University of Technology, Vaal University of Technology and the Institute of Marketing

Management. The conference was also attended by various professionals offering to invest time mentoring students. An international organisation represented in this country by SAPICS, SCNext helps to recruit and equip students for the working world, an important component of which is pairing students with SCM professionals in order to facilitate a true transfer of skills and experience.

to stop overloading where it starts. Faced with billions of Rands of roads damage bills on an annual basis Parliament said the current overloading legislation needs to be changed. As a result DOT has created a national overload control policy as part of which the minister of transport has begun enforcing the existing national road traffic amendment act.” “Failure to comply is a serious offence that carries a maximum penalty of up to R240 000 fine or a six year prison sentence or both. The enforcement of the legislation is however expected to have a positive effect on the percentage of overloaded vehicles on the road as overloading will be stopped at the source. This in turn will lead to less damage to our roads and less costly infrastructure repairs,” said Swanepoel. Enquiry no: 10

“It is our vision to establish student societies at campuses across the country, organising both formal and informal gatherings where SAPICS mentors will address students on a variety of topics, as we saw at this year’s conference,” says Ayanda Khumalo, SAPICS Relationship Manager and President of SCNext South Africa. This year, speakers varied from Fortunate Mboweni from Bidvest Panalpina Logistics, who was the first African to win the Young Freight Forwarder of the Year competition, to supply chain veteran Mark Cleeve-Edwards from Barloworld Logistics who presented results from the most recent Supply Chain Foresight survey. This year’s survey found that people are more stressed by the pace of change than the actual change itself. “Entrants into the SCM market must understand that they will need to be very good at adapting to change fast if they are to stay ahead of the game,” says Khumalo. “The worst thing you can do for your SCM career is to become numb to change. You should always anticipate and get yourself ready for change before it even happens.” “At SCNext, we realise the importance of employers and industry professionals investing time and effort in the development of young minds before they start working – for the good of their own organisations,” says Khumalo, explaining the variety of speakers and topics featured at this year’s conference. High speed doors increase return on investment

E

fficiency of the supply chain, combined with employee wellbeing and satisfaction, are primary contributors to a productive workplace environment within manufacturing and storage facilities. High speed roll up doors allow for rapid opening and closing and, together with their longer operating life and high safety standards, provide customers with an excellent return on investment as a result of faster turnaround times. “If one also considers that high speed doors result in a more controlled ambient temperature inside facilities, their energy efficiency and contribution to a greener footprint and employee comfort becomes apparent,” says Wim Dessing, managing director of Apex Strip Curtains & Doors. “Temperature and humidity control is enhanced through the elimination of excessive through flow of warm or cold exterior air into the workspace. As an added benefit, due to their speed of operation, Apex high speed doors reduce the influx of insects and other

airborne contaminants that negatively impact on both employee wellbeing and product quality,” adds Dessing. Unhindered traffic flow remains a primary concern for businesses. The Apex range of high speed doors incorporates a counterweighted balancing system that not only ensures high standards of performance and safety but also provides fast, semi-automatic reopening. Restriction on freight vehicles will NOT reduce road carnage

he proposed legislation to restrict freight vehicles in peak hours will NOT reduce road carnage says Gavin Kelly, spokesperson of the Road Freight Association, but will merely create greater congestion, more chaos and pandemonium on our roads. It will now cost you more for a loaf of bread if you’re lucky enough to find a fresh loaf on the shelf at your local supermarket. Not to mention your veggies, meat, chicken, fish, butter, milk, which are being impacted by the country wide loadshedding. Picture laden trucks parked off on the sides and verges of roads from highways to upmarket suburban areas and a sudden tsunami

of trucks as soon as the restriction is over jostling to markets to make up for lost hours. Operators will now have to review loading and offloading times with customers and review how loads are going to be distributed around the country. This could very easily result in smaller vehicles being utilised which will just drive up the cost of logistics and motorists will have to contend with more freight vehicles on the road. This legislation will not solve the real problem on the road which is the lack of enforcement and motorists not obeying the rules of the road. Sporadic testing of drivers by authorities will also not curtail the accidents.

About three years ago, Woolworths was operating 50 units with five different vendors over three sites. “Our fleet had been purchased on an ad hoc basis and specifications had never been standardised. A renewal program was initiated with the aim to have one national MHE vendor, to standardise national specifications and define clear end to end costing. Toyota Forklift offered these as well as a relationship that allowed for mutual growth,” syas Michael-John Newham of Woolworths. “We delivered material handling equipment according to the customer’s specifications which was fitted with world leading and first in the country Trak air system batteries and chargers with Battery WIQ, a wireless monitoring tool for the batteries,” explained Leric Smith, Product Manager for Toyota Forklift. Woolworths is known for its passion in quality and innovation as well as bringing in new concepts to ensure safety in the warehouse. Growth in sales of pre-owned trailers

argain prices, high quality vehicles on offer and reliable after sales service have resulted in a substantial increase in the number of pre-owned refrigerated trailers sold by Serco this year. Tight economic conditions are believed to be one of the reasons behind the upsurge in sales with transporters looking to grow their fleets without incurring the high capital cost of new vehicles. Another reason for the increase is that preowned Serco trailers first undergo comprehensive mechanical and structural checks under the supervision of trained technical staff. The major truck accidents were caused as a result of operators that did not operate legally and professionally on our roads which would most probably have been prevented through proper law enforcement. In the incident in Pinetown, despite the driver’s illegal licence, it was clear that no compliance training had taken place and in the N12 incident, a basic pre-trip inspection had not been properly conducted and the truck had not been maintained. Africa’s largest dredger launched in Rotterdam

ransnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) recently announced the launch of its Dredging Service’s division’s new 5500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), the Ilembe, which is part of Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy (MDS). The vessel was named at an official ceremony at the shipyard of manufacturer Royal IHC in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The R889 million dredger contract has been delivered within budget and is three months ahead of schedule, with the vessel expected to leave Rotterdam before Christmas and to reach Durban by the end of January 2016. TNPA Chief Executive, Richard Vallihu, said the Ilembe would be the largest and most powerful dredger at any African port. “For TNPA having a reliable, world-class dredging fleet plays a vital role in facilitating economic growth within the country by ensuring our ports’ entrance channels, basins and berths are a sufficient depth and well maintained. The majority of this work can only be done by having two reliable THSDs in operation. We will only be in this position early next year so we are very pleased with the early delivery times and thank the management of IHC for prioritising our build,” he said. Vallihu said the authority had recently ordered three new dredgers which represented the company’s largest single capital purchase. Dredging Services has a fleet renewal programme underway in excess of R2 billion, which would boost the division’s capacity to

aid the removal of approximately four million cubic metres of excess material from the seabed every year at South Africa’s ports. The dredger was designed and built to achieve low maintenance costs and substantially improve productivity. She would run a 24 hour operation compared to the current 12hr operation. The dredger would also be selfsufficient in that it comes with its own workboat which, among its many tasks, will be used as a hydrographic survey boat. TNPA’s dredging fleet renewal programme, which began in 2010, has to date seen the delivery of: the 4200m³ Isandlwana, a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD); the 750m³ grab hopper dredger, the Italeni; and the replacement of two hydrographic survey boats. Dredging Services expects the contract for a new plough tug to be awarded this year and a cutter suction dredger contract to be awarded in 2016. Enquiry no: 17

Pallet trucks offer increase runtime and energy efficiency

rown, one of the world’s largest material handling companies, has increased the energy efficiency of its WT 3000 Series pallet trucks. By making more efficient use of battery capacity, the forklifts now operate for up to 28 percent longer per battery charge. All WT 3000 Series trucks will now be delivered with this new battery-life optimisation. Crown is distributed in Southern Africa by Goscor Lift Truck Company (GLTC), part of the Imperial group. According to the VDI 2198 test cycle – an acknowledged industry standard –the new Crown WT 3000 models run significantly longer on a single battery charge while maintaining the same pallet throughput. The runtime of trucks equipped with mechanical steering increased by up to 28 percent; trucks

with electronic steering showed an improvement of approximately 9 percent. This means fewer batteryrecharging cycles are required, increasing truck availability and boosting productivity. Depending on the application, this optimised energy efficiency also means that smaller, less expensive batteries can be used to handle the same workload. “Crown works closely with its customers in order to observe and analyse its products in real-world use,” says GLTC MD Darryl Shafto. “This helps them to identify areas and functions with potential for optimisation, enabling

them to further enhance a trucks’ productivity and performance. The increased energy efficiency of Crown’s WT 3000 Series is an important step in helping our customers further improve their operating margins.” Crown WT 3000 pallet trucks are designed for intensive on-ramp work and high throughput. They are characterised by high performance, reliability, durability and exceptional operator ergonomics. The series includes models with capacities of up to 2,500 kilogrammes. Customers can also choose between mechanical or electronic steering systems, as well as three different operator platform configurations. Crown’s WT 3000 Series earned numerous awards, including the universal design award 2012 and the Design 4 Safety Award, which was presented at IMHX 2013, the United Kingdom’s leading Enquiry no: 18 logistics trade fair.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT & CONTROL

Leading the drive for reduced vehicle emissions transport sectors have been identified as key sectors in this drive. Currently, legislation in South Africa only requires diesel vehicle compliance with Euro 2 emission standards. A small but growing number of Euro 5-configured trucks operating in the country are already fitted with SCR units. “The availability of Air1 gives Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) the flexibility to introduce the latest technology vehicles into South Africa. Irrespective of whether or not truck owners have heard of Air1, the chances are that they may soon be driving vehicles that require it,” Bruckner says. Aligned to this is the focus by Engen and a number of locally-based vehicle manufacturers to further reduce NOx emissions from trucks and buses. “An increasing number of fleet

customers are adopting green practices, and Engen is strategically positioned to provide solutions that match these changing market requirements.” Says Bruckner. Air1, which is offered by Engen, is used in conjunction with low-sulphur diesel and low-

For Pitney Bowes South Africa, a company which helps businesses achieve their greatest commercial potential through technology, one can easily overlook the importance of air quality in the work environment and how this can affect productivity. That is why the company is pleased to introduce Ideal Air Purifiers to the South African market – an effective and easy way to cleanse and ionise indoor air. Ideal Air Purifiers use AEON Blue technology, which means that they are able to filter almost 100% of the smallest particles and pathogenic germs from polluted ambient air before they reach a person’s airways in a multiple-stage filtering process, says Michael Springer, MD of Pitney Bowes South Africa. In addition, the technology features an activated carbon filter which effectively absorbs odours, including tobacco smoke and chemicals. The Ideal air purifying system boasts a high CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) which has been verified by an independent rating authority. Verification tests were based on the elimination rates of bacteria and mould, pollen, Formaldehyde, and smoke and odour. “The air purifiers have application in any environment where dust, pollen, animal hair, exhaust fumes, chemical fumes, odours, mould or tobacco smoke affects the air quality. he amount of paper being recycled in South Africa has increased by over a third in the past decade and is expected to reach 63% by 2017, according to statistics released by the Paper Recycling Association of South Africa (PRASA). This should motivate local businesses to maintain this positive track-record by implementing and maintaining a mantra of sustainability among staff members. This is according to Dorota Boltman-Malone (pictured), Divisional Director of Rainbow Paper Management - a group company of JSE-listed Metrofile Holdings Limited, who says that businesses can make a significant difference to the environment by simply recycling documents and printing/packaging materials “Paper documents can be recycled up to seven times for reconstitution before the fibre becomes too short, meaning that a collective effort by South African businesses to recycle can have substantial effects in

reducing the amount of natural resources needed for production of new daily used materials and goods” Boltman-Malone points to the 2014 Metrofile Information and Records Management Trends Index, which found that a staggering 26% of local organisations do not practice or promote paper recycling initiatives. “Organisations that do not have in-house recycling stations can approach recycling service provider to implement these practices.” She adds that “industrialised paper wastage use up unnecessary landfill which accounts in total for about 35% of global municipal landfill space.” Any unwanted paper documents, magazines, books, newspapers and cardboard boxes are all ideal for recycling, while laminated items, carbon paper and stickers must not be placed in recycling bins, she says.

focus on packaging

Price sensitive consumers allow new FMCG packaging trends ucts, teamed with exploring new ways of offering products are examples of how brands are trying to appeal to an environmentally aware consumer. Bigger is not always better

S

outh African brand owners understand the importance of adjusting and adapting products to serve the new price-sensitive consumer. Furthermore, brand owners now understand that to improve the bottom line, the solution isn’t always product diversification, but often found in reviewing the way a product is packaged. With the consumer making more instore comparisons, adding value and differentiating through packaging has become more pertinent than ever. It is therefore interesting to notice just how FMCG brands are doing this and the trends driving the packaging evolution. Going green

Ensuring packaging is environmentally friendly not only brings about ecological change but also makes financial sense. Consumers in the USA and the UK are showing their continuous support for products with smaller carbon footprints. South Africans are slowly but surely follow-

ing suit. This movement pushes large packaging organisations to invest heavily into offering clients more ecofriendly solutions. Boomtown recently worked with Woodlands Dairy on its environmentally friendly packaging for First Choice long-life milk. “Woodlands Dairies places major emphasis on environmentally-friendly practices and approached Boomtown to illustrate this on all their long-life milk cartons” says Kenny Holloway, Client Service Director. “The ‘It’s all good’ logo, visible on all packaging, is a visual representation of a brand promise.” Mondelez recently launched a 100g refill pack for its luxury coffee range Jacobs Kronung. The product allows consumers to refill existing glass containers and enjoy the same great taste at a lower price-point, and be eco-friendly. The reduction in weight leads to a reduction in transport costs, which in turn fits both the consumer and Mondelez’s pocket, and reduces its carbon footprint. Brands communicating the green nature of their packaging and prod-

eliable measurement of R extremely small components in the micron range often pushes optical sensors beyond their limits. With the introduction of its new PNBC range, Wenglor presents a total of eight new high-performance distance sensors that set new standards in accuracy due to their maximum resolution of 0.06 µm with only 0.05% linearity error. This impressive precision is supported by excellent repeatability and thermal stability, even at output rates of up to 30 kHz. The sensors work with a high resolution CMOS line array and determine distance to object by

means of angular measurement. Due to proven algorithms, stable measuring values are obtained even for difficult m e a s u r i n g surfaces, for example sheet metal with speckle effect. With a maximum range of 1 000 mm, PNCB products are amongst the most accurate sensors on the market - enhanced by the speed at which measuring frequencies of up to 30 000 Hz. Minimum temperature drift means

A trend towards smaller increment pack sizes is another interesting FMCG movement. These packs are especially popular in markets where budget restrictions force consumers to purchase products on a daily basis. While jumbo packs make sense for a middle-higher LSM consumer, lower LSM consumers are looking for products in sample sizes to see them through the week. The path of least resistance A study conducted by Helsinkibased M. Real Consumer Packaging, confirmed that although consumers are attracted to interesting shapes and sizes in packaging and innovative designs, they will opt for a less attractive but easy-to-open pack when making purchase decisions. This is especially the case with on-the-go foods. Daily Milk bars packaging recently adjusted to allow for easy opening and closing. Being re-sealable improves the product: making it less messy, easy to enjoy on the go, and maintains freshness if you don’t eat the full slab in one go. Similarly, Eveready saw tremendous improvement in sales after redesigning its packaging in 2010.. “We modernised the packaging with elements such as foiling which made it visually appealing and we also added an easy-to-open perforation. Both these developments made the pack more attractive in-store,” says Liza Kingston, Eveready Brand Manager the sensor can operate immediately without a long warm-up phase. The measured value is read out simultaneously via the analog output and the Industry 4.0 compatible Ethernet TCP/IP interface. This allows the user to forward data to higher level systems directly via network integration. The PNBC range is equipped with up to four switching outputs that can also be used, for example, as incremental encoder inputs or for switching emitted light on and off. The diverse sensor settings options are made available by external Wenglor software (wTeach). The sensors are available through ASSTech Process Electronics & Instrumentation CC. Enquiry no: 28

who worked with Boomtown to create the new design. With 70% of buying decisions made in-store, it is essential for brand owners to consider ease-of-use as a contributor to product evaluation. Innovation through packaging is an interesting way in which brands can differentiate, save money and appeal to the price-sensitive consumer. Coupled with the correct creative partner, packaging can

yield significant return on investment through increased sales as a direct result of a better solution. It has been proven that consumers view a product and its packaging as a whole when making buying decisions. It is therefore essential that great products be packaged in environmentally friendly, easyto-use and economical packaging. Enquiry no: 27

Eastern Cape a major focus for future growth

B

&E International wants to secure major contracts in the Eastern Cape, which is seen as a focus area for future growth, Dewald Janse van Rensburg, managing director, says. With its beginnings in the Eastern Cape in 1972 in drilling and blasting, the company today has a broad service offering covering integrated crushing, screening and minerals processing solutions. “Our competitive advantage is that we have been operating plants for many years, and are able to design plants that are more maintenance and user friendly, more durable and offer a

longer service life. We run such plants at extremely low overheads, which adds to the customers’ bottom line,” Janse van Rensburg says. With the recent award of major road-upgrade contracts, there will be a need for quality road-building materials, and with the continued trend towards outsourcing, B&E International remains confident about its continued participation in the Eastern Cape economy as a major role player. “The time when contractors in the infrastructure sector opted for inhouse crushing has passed, and very few choose this option as it is now

correctly perceived as a specialist skill set. There is a strong recognition that it requires the knowledge and applications experience of a seasoned operator,” Janse van Rensburg says. “B&E International is that operator.” What gives B&E International the leading edge is its extensive fleet of equipment and machinery, which caters for a range of applications from mobile crushing and screening to surface mining and mineral processing; to specialised equipment such as Comar batch and continuous asphalt plants. This extensive range of equipment gives B&E International the flexibility to be able to respond to specific requirements by offering customised solutions. A total solutions approach requires the in-house expertise and extensive resources of a seasoned operator such as B&E International. “We are uniquely placed to be able to offer such a comprehensive service, not to mention the expert advice and assistance we are able to give to our customers,” Janse van Rensburg says. B&E International also boasts some of the most modern crushers in the market, and has the capability to produce road stone and quality concrete sand, base course, concrete aggregates, water bound Macadam, ballast and filter media. BCCEI dispute centre now open for business competent to hear individual cases. All commissioners sitting on this panel are CCMA accredited and have extensive experience in this industry sector.” A large number of the commissioners have served on the Gautrain project, as well as at Medupi and Kusile power stations and therefore have an intimate understanding of the complexity of the issues common to the industry. Some of the panel members have also been trained in the new Labour Relations Act (LRA) amendments with specific reference to Section 198 disputes, which deal with Temporary Employment Service (TES or labour brokers). “Because the civil engineering sector is mature and very specialised, it was essential to secure individuals who understand this industry when overseeing or hearing a dispute. The

use of suitably qualified commissioners will consequently ensure the fairness and quality of the arbitration award,” Denson adds. Another significant advantage is that the council is also in the process of building a library which will house all arbitration cases relating to the industry. The data will be available to members via the BCCEI website and will not only enable the BCCEI to build up a case study data base, but will also allow parties to access and review similar previous cases. “Due consideration will be given to those cases of a sensitive nature and in these instances specific references such as company and individual names will be removed,” says Denson. All cases will be referred to the new BCCEI head office in Bedfordview, where the majority of cases in the greater PWV area will be heard. For cases in other regions, a commissioner will be appointed from the BCCEI panel to facilitate the process within Enquiry no: 33 that specific region.

Rammer receives renowned iF design award

he international iF Product T Design Award 2015 goes to the Atlas Copco LT 6005 Rammer

series. For over 60 years, the iF Design Award has been recognized all over the world as a label of design excellence, identifying outstanding achievements in design. ”Thorough research and a tight cooperation between R&D and our Industrial Design Team have been success factors in the development of the new LT Rammers,” says Fredrik Hägglund, Manager Technical Development Light Compaction Equipment. ”With a strong user focus, we managed to increase the balance of the machine, making it extremely easy to handle.” The new rammers are designed for compaction work in confined areas. The product is a result of research and customer input. One of the major improvements is the slimmer design that facilitates handling. For example the visibility is considerably enhanced.

In order to get full visibility of the foot, the operator needs to lean 50 % less to the side. The user grip area is increased by 300 % for better control. Improved safety, reduced weight, high compaction efficiency and ergonomics are other user-friendly features that the jury found appealing. ”Easy service is a high priority for our customers. With the new design we have managed to meet those high expectations. And even though receiving the iF Product Design Award was an honour, the real joy lies in the knowledge that we can offer our customers a great product.” concludes Fredrik Enquiry no: 36 Hägglund.

Hydrostatic concrete dumpers

ydrostatic drive unit concrete dumpers are ideally suited to the arduous operating conditions found on South African construction and building sites. This is according to Devin van Zyl, CEO of Lambson’s Hire. Lambson’s Hire has stocked its countrywide fleet with Wacker Neuson 1.6 ton and 3 ton dumpers to meet customer demand for reliable and hardworking equipment. Van Zyl explains that many dumpers suffer from gearbox failure, resulting in unwanted downtime and frustration for customers. “However, by opting for hydrostatic drive units this problem area will be eliminated. Feedback from customers, combined with extensive research and testing, forms the basis of all our equipment choices. We need to know that the machines we send to site will perform according to spec and remain operational for as long as possible. While adequate maintenance plays a large role in the uptime of our equipment, it is even more important to make the right

SA construction likely to continue treading water S takeholders in South Africa’s construction sector continue to anxiously await the materialisation of the proposed R800billion of public sector investment in the country’s infrastructure over the next three years. However, while this will undoubtedly be a much-needed shot in the arm for the country’s ailing construction industry, it should by no means be considered a panacea as the planned investment spend represents little to no growth in infrastructure investment compared to the previous three year period. That’s according to John Orford, Portfolio Manager for Old Mutual Investment Group Macro Solutions, who believes that the SA construction sector’s medium-term prospects will almost certainly face headwinds due to lingering electricity challenges. “While government’s infrastructure development rollout will undoubtedly mean the construction industry will experience better days in the coming

years, any uptick in activity shouldn’t automatically be seen as a cyclical turnaround by investors,” he emphasises, “as it’s very likely that any shortterm increase in activity will eventually be tempered by still slow economic growth as a result of energy constraints and delays in the rollout of Eskom’s new capacity.” Orford does, however, point out that much of this is already priced into the sector, as evidenced by very subdued share prices compared to the broader market in recent years. And he is also quick to explain that the news coming out of the construction sector has not all been bad in recent years. “While activity has slowed considerably from the highs preceding the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we have actually seen positive growth in three of the last four years,” he explains, “with real growth in construction investment recorded at 3%, 11.8% and 14% in 2011, 2013 and 2014 respectively, and the potential for low interest rates is

likely to continue to underpin the sector during the rest of 2015.” Orford expects the SA construction sector to continue to seek opportunities in international markets including Africa to offset weak domestic growth prospects “The larger companies in the sector have already made significant moves to establish international operations, including Africa,” he explains, “and we expect to see this trend gain traction as rising infrastructure investment on the continent also increases demand for skilled and experienced construction talent.” However, he also warns that while opportunities in Africa may translate into sustainable growth for many SA construction companies, these opportunities also come with more than their fair share of project and political risk. Therefore caution - by companies and investors - is strongly advised. Enquiry no: 38

he incorporation of SA French and Elephant Lifting Equipment under the umbrella brand of Torre Lifting Solutions, combined with the extensive distribution network of the Torre Industries Group, will allow it to offer a total lifting solution to customers in South Africa and across the continent. Covering the full spectrum of lifting equipment, from consumables to tower cranes and electric overhead cranes, means that SA French and Elephant Lifting Equipment are well positioned to undertake heavy lifting tasks. Operating in this sector requires a strategic combination of suitable products and well-honed knowledge and skills to allow optimum product selection for application-specific lifting solutions. The market requires a blend of standard products and specialised bespoke lifting solutions. Typical offthe-shelf products supplied include chain blocks, lever blocks, webbing slings and chain slings, which are used for maintenance and new installations. This type of lifting equipment does not require any specialised input from the supplier.

“On the other side of the scale, where heavy machinery is being lifted into position or large sections of a structure need to be erected, it would be necessary to provide a custom solution. In this instance we would work collaboratively with the riggers to ensure that equipment used is legally compliant, safety compliant and fit to undertake the task,” Elephant Lifting Equipment MD, Grant Walton, says. One of the newest additions to the equipment range is an ultra-compact steel wire rope hoist suitable for lifting in areas where height restrictions or confined spaces are an issue. The lightweight hoist’s design allows it to be run on a smaller beam, without compromising its lifting capacity. For many years SA French’s Potain cranes have been a constant presence across African skylines, both in the built environment as well as on mines. The ability to assess the requirements for a particular construction project, supply and erect the most appropriate tower crane solution, whilst adhering

to safety and other statutory regulations, has resulted in a large African footprint for the company. Quentin van Breda, executive chairman of SA French, says that enabling each site where the company’s tower cranes are operational to be as independent as possible often involves the transfer of technical and maintenance skills to the local companies, commonly at the time of commissioning of the crane. Tower cranes used in South Africa range from 1 ton lifting capacity at 50 metre radius up to 10.6 ton capacity at an 80 metre radius. Enquiry no: 39

Dorper Wind Farm powered up

he Dorper Wind Farm in the Eastern Cape has reached completion. The project is fully operational and steadily feeding electricity into the national electricity grid. The 100MW of wind power are generated from 40 Nordex 2.5MW turbines. Says Anne Henschel, Managing Director of Nordex South Africa – the supplier of the wind turbines to the Dorper Wind Farm: “We are proud to have achieved this final milestone of grid compliance and hand-over to the client at Dorper Wind Farm. The power station is connected to the national electricity grid and is supporting electricity capacity with green, sustainable energy.” The Dorper Wind Farm is one of four turnkey projects awarded to Nordex as part of the REIPPPP (Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme). This project is jointly led by Rainmaker Energy and Sumitomo. Nordex is the main EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) contractor with a 10-year service, operation and maintenance agreement already in place

with Dorper Wind Farm. The high voltage electrical company, Conco, a Nordex sub-contractor, built both parts to the substation – the Eskom switching yard and the IPP (Independent Power Producer) substation, designed to counterbalance any redundancy in the distribution of power. Nordex has played a pivotal role in the implementation process of

both the substation and switching yard, ensuring that the energy produced by their turbines is efficiently fed into the grid with minimal loss or waste. Says Henschel: “The combination of our latest wind turbine technology together with our experience and expertise in developing and building wind farms all around the world, has ensured that we meet Eskom’s criteria to be certified as grid compliant. We energised the Eskom switching yard portion first, thereby allowing Eskom to ‘loop in and out’ of the substation. This allowed for an optimal testing environment and final successful connection of the substation to Eskom and its customers.” As one of the world’s leading wind power companies, Nordex is committed to partnering with South African government departments, Eskom, local businesses, the African renewable energy sector and communities to support the growth of green and sustainable energy production in South Africa, to the benefit of all. Silence is golden

he low-noise quality of the Kipor 20SS3 diesel generator has made it popular with small business owners throughout South Africa. “Silence is truly golden in more confined spaces,” says Smith Power Equipment’s (SPE) Power Products division GM Tom Bloom, “and the Kipor 20SS3’s sound attenuation canopy, which features a flame-proof, heat-resistant, rock wool sound insulation, provides truly remarkable noise retention,” he says. In addition to its properties of silent operation, the Kipor 20SS3 has several more outstanding features including: • More Powerful Performance – exclusive Kipor technology provides greater starting

The original compressors, also provided by Ingersoll Rand more than 10 years ago, had been procured in line with requirements that have since changed, and were thus providing a surplus of pneumatic potential that could not be harvested. Despite the compressors continuing to function according to their performance rating, the fitment of a more accurately-specified compressor solution is an important cornerstone of a more streamlined, efficient production line. The C400s provide around 33% less compressed air capacity. “The C400s were designed, configured, installed and commissioned along a very tight deadline, having received the order at the

capability for large loads such as central air conditioners while still running other appliances and electronics. Automatic, Hands-off Operation - in the event of a power outage, the generator automatically restores power whether you’re there or not. Safer Power for Sensitive Electronics - protects all of your valuable appliances and sophisticated electronics with cleaner, safer and stable power. Easier Service and Installation – new, easyconnection terminal block provides faster, more flexible installations while LED Display provides superior diagnostic capability. Spillage Containment – generator base has the capacity to hold 110% of the fluids (fuel, lubricant and coolant) needed at any given time by the generator. This ensures the containment of any spillage. Easily Transported – compact design enables unit to fit into the most confined spaces

For a centrifugal compressor, whereby dynamic parameters such as motor size and compressor internals are configured according to the atmospheric pressure of the unit’s operation, this was a considerable logistical and implementation achievement. The two machines are automatically regulated through Ingersoll Rand’s Integrated Multiple Machine Control (IMMC) intelligent controller. The IMMC automatically collaborates the performance of each compressor, providing a seamless air supply in the event of a unit changeover, for performance and maintenance purposes, and balancing the machines when they run in tandem. ndustrial gases market leader Afrox has been awarded a long-term contract to supply high-purity nitrogen, and liquid petroleum gas (LPG), to the US$565-million Bokpoort CSP Project located approximately 125 km south-east of Upington. The Bokpoort CSP will boast a 50 MWe generating capacity with nine hours of thermal storage once it is fully commissioned by end-2015. Afrox business manager for bulk ASU gases, Carte Lubbe explains that the company is supplying Bokpoort CSP with a fully-customised turnkey solution unique to the local market. “LPG will be used by the CSP during the startup phase for melting of salts for the Thermal Energy Storage system, whereby the transfer medium is heated to the point that it transforms from a solid state into a molten state.” The substantial amount of LPG is, however, only required during the heating phase of the project. As a result, Afrox has designed an innovative modular supply system that will be installed and can be dismantled and removed from site within days, thereby ensuring minimal project disruption. Lubbe continues: “Following the heating period, the entire LPG supply plant will be removed from site. Similar projects in the past have made use of fixed installations that become redundant after the start-up phase and take up unnecessary space, while costing a fortune to maintain. Upon service completion, our unique modular plant can be removed by a fleet of dedicated and specialised vehicles in under a week – an unrivalled turnaround time.” According to Lubbe, the Afrox modular LPG supply system was expected to be operational by the end of March 2015. “Our teams will be on site in mid-March to install the temporary LPG storage facility and to oversee the first LPG being delivered. The heating process can begin immediately after installation,” he continues. Following the heating of the molten salts, a blanketing system is required in order to minimise the risks due to flammable products, as well as minimising the emissions to the atmosphere and to avoid the deterioration of process fluids. For this reason, the plant will include a nitrogen network that will provide an inert atmosphere to the salt storage tanks, the expansion tanks and the high temperature Enquiry no: 44 fluid boiler.

et there be light could be the clarion call of South African industry as it currently faces the challenges of both scheduled load shedding and unplanned power outages, difficulties that will not be overcome any time soon. The show, however, must go on as businesses urgently seek alternative sources of power and illumination to remain productive. The range of TowerLight lighting towers produced in Italy by Generac Towerlights the world’s largest producer of lighting towers and imported by local crushing and screening specialist Pilot Crushtec International, provides powerful lighting solutions for commerce and industry independent from the national grid. The principle is both simple and effective. TowerLight systems contain on-board diesel generators that produce sufficient electricity to power a battery of four or more metal halide flood lights mounted on telescopic towers. The telescopic tower mast completely eliminates the safety hazard associated with scissor type masts. Depending on the model, these telescopic masts are either hydraulically elevated or elevated by means of a hand winch. They are easily transportable and have the option to be fitted to a locally manufactured trailer to be towed on public roads, allowing operators to react rapidly to power outages when and where they occur. “The introduction of the range has proven to be a far sighted marketing decision appearing as a classic case of having the right product at the right time,” explains Pilot Crushtec International CEO Sandro Scherf. “When we originally introduced the range, our intention was to help our customers grow their businesses by making it possible for them to work around the clock.” Enquiry no: 46

okogawa Electric Corporation announces the release of a number of new UTAdvanced series controllers including four DIN rail*1 mounting type controllers and one 1/8 DIN panel type program controller. This is part of Yokogawa’s ongoing effort to expand its controller business by satisfying market needs and giving customers a greater range of choices. UTAdvanced series controllers are mounted on furnaces and other types of heat processrelated industrial facilities for the measurement, display, and control of operating variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow rate. In recent years, it has become more common for equipment manufacturers to integrate the setting, manipulation, and display functions of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and other embedded control devices on touch panels and other types of user interfaces, and to mount the hardware on DIN rails inside panel boxes. There is an increasing need for such DIN rail mounting type controllers. The UTAdvanced series controllers come in two sizes: 1/4 DIN and 1/8 DIN. While 1/4 DIN controllers are more popular because they have large display panels and provide a wider range of I/O signal choices, there are certain applications where space is at a premium that require a smaller device. For just such applications, Yokogawa has added more 1/8 DIN controllers to its product Enquiry no: 47 lineup.

Pillar for job creation

T

HE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has in the past 2014/15 financial year contributed 14 623 direct and indirect jobs to the South African economy. “It’s important that we consistently provide an environment in which job creation is at the axis of what we do. Our approach is to enable

A

and address skills development through a number of initiatives,” said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of marketing and communications. The CDC has since inception created in excess of 62 142 jobs, thanks to the overwhelming investor confidence in the IDZ. Late last year and beginning of 2015 the CDC had six investors under construction, namely Dedisa Peaking Power Plant (R3.5-billion), Digistics Logistics expansion (R32-million), ID Logistics (R53-million), cold storage facility for Vector Logistics (R130-million), UTi Distribution Centre (R30-million) and Afrox’s air separation unit (R300-million). This has resulted in 2 400 people directly benefiting from jobs. “Investment growth and confidence in the CDC has contributed tremendously to the creation of opportunities. We have managed to

create as many jobs as possible as a result of our service offering,” added Dr Vilakazi. CDC’s diversified service offering as an implementing agent on infrastructure development for various government departments has immensely contributed to increased jobs as well. The organisation’s growing national footprint provides a wide pool of labour and as such impacts several communities. Coega’s national footprint is able to provide skilled and semi-skilled jobs. In the FY 2014/15 the organisation created over 11 000 (unaudited) number of jobs within the construction sector and has continued this year in the same vein. “The CDC is easily one of the biggest employers in the Eastern Cape and has gained traction in other provinces through its work that consistently seeks to contribute positively towards socio economic growth,” said Dr Vilakazi. The CDC, through its Human Capital Solutions (HCS), provides skills training, labour absorption forecasting and SMME development. The organisation has trained

over 8 791 people in the FY2014/15 and since inception provided training and development opportunities to more than 71 445 people. “Skills training is an important aspect of what we do. Our objective is to provide labour that is well rounded and is able to tackle all aspects of investor and client needs,” said Duncan Grenfell, CDC unit head: recruitment and Enquiry no: 48 placement.

Bbbee empowerment trust to benefit employees

firm belief that its employees are the glue that holds any business structure together and drives it towards sustainability forms the rationale behind the Zest WEG Group’s strategy to establish an empowerment company – Zest Empower Co (Pty) Ltd – which will have a 25.1 % shareholding in Zest WEG Electric, the entity responsible for all sales within the borders of South Africa. Louis Meiring (pictured), CEO of Zest WEG Group, explains that the Group’s history is characterised by fairness, trust and respect, a passion for its work, excellence in customer service and the recognition of all people and communities. The group has operated a CSI initiative and its outreach has stretched across many areas of South Africa. The beneficiaries of the empowerment trust include all permanently employed, previously disadvantaged employees across all the South African operations of Zest WEG Group Africa. In an effort to outline the benefits that these employees will experience, the organisation launched a roadshow which was taken to all its

operations in the country. “It was critical to the success of the initiative that we maintain a high degree of transparency. The concept has been well accepted by employees and has stimulated increased levels of two-way communication, a positive contributor to driving improvements within the company,” says Meiring. Zest WEG Group’s philosophy of partnering not only with its customers but with its own people exhibits a cognisance that employees are, in fact, the most important customers in the business. This is evidenced by the fact that Zest WEG Group was previously black empowered through direct investment ownership by Medu Capital. “Interestingly, Medu Capital, which is a private equity investor, had an investment horizon of five years but actually only exited the relationship after seven years. This move coincided with the start of official negotiations for the sale of Zest to WEG and once the negotiations were concluded we immediately began reviewing various options to ensure that we would meet the BBBEE code of practice,” Meiring points out.

Finding the most sustainable model, that would secure the interests of the business and simultaneously provide benefits for our employees, was approached in a methodical and careful manner over an 18 month period ,” says Meiring. As part of the restructuring process, Zest WEG Electric will be introducing a new non-executive board member – Jack Phalane an attorney from Fluxmans. “The company will continue on the strong foundation created over the past 35 years and will remain dedicated to the unwavering commitment and support to our customers. This new structure, we believe, will return us to a Level 4 BBBEE contributor status,” Meiring concludes. Zest WEG Group Africa, a registered South African company, will be responsible for all sales into Africa. All the manufacturing entities, namely WEG Transformers Africa, Shaw Controls and Zest WEG Genset Division will become divisions of Zest WEG Manufacturing. Zest WEG Manufacturing will, in turn, be wholly owned by Zest WEG Group Africa.

Extra virgin avocado oil processing equipment

G

EA Westfalia Separator recently supplied food processing equipment to Croft Ltd.’s Greenfields Extra Virgin Avocado Oil processing facility in Thika, Kenya. The plant will extract oil from up to 70 tons of avocado fruits per day via a two-phase cold pressing method to produce clear, high-quality Extra Virgin Avocado Oil. GEA’s scope of the project included the supply of malaxers, decanter and separator equipment, in a process train that extracted a high volume of oil per avocado while demonstrating high efficiency in both energy and water use. GEA was also responsible for the installation and commissioning thereof. “The two-phase decantation uses significantly less water consump-

Making a difference at Frere Hospital L ast year, Polyflor SA was in a position to give something back to the community through partnering with Carte Blanche in its “Making a Difference” campaign. During 2014, Polyflor SA donated 720 m2 of vinyl floor sheeting and accessory products as well as Gradus wall protection in the form of wall guards and corner guards to upgrade and revamp the Frere Hospital Paediatric theatre complex- a large, provincial, government funded and tertiary teaching hospital, in East London. Polyflor SA, was understandably excited to partner with the Trust when they were approached for a corporate sponsorship for the first time five years ago. “We saw this as an opportunity to give something back to the community and to help make a lasting and tangible difference where it was most needed,” explained Tandy ColemanSpolander, Marketing Director of Polyflor SA. “East London’s Frere Hospital serves some of the country’s most desperate communities. Children were being operated on in underresourced adult theatres while an abandoned operating theatre suite was being used as a storage facility,” Tandy said. Working with the team at HDG (Hospital Design Group), the once run-down theatre complex has been transformed and is equipped with two fully functioning paediatric digital operating theatre suites that will allow them to see seven to eight patients a day, and a total of 1200 children a year.

Virtual monitoring for near real-time machine health

n January 2014, Barloworld rolled out the Cat Equipment Management Solutions (EMS) telematic suite across its southern African dealer footprint. Now, over a year later, there are more than 4 000 machines reporting to the Cat VisionLink internet portal via Product Link , the onboard transmitting hardware, either through GSM cellular connection, or satellite. Most new Cat machines leave the factory with Product Link fitted as standard. “Retrofit kits are available for older machines,” explains Barloworld Equipment senior product manager, Wally Parsons. (Barloworld Equipment is the Cat dealer for

southern Africa.) Automatically set for international roaming, Product Link provides seamless cross-border coverage. Offered in five levels, Cat EMS meets every operational scope requirement, from plant hire and construction fleets to full-scale mine sites. Benefits of registering machines on the EMS programme include peace of mind; cost reductions; better resale; safety; higher mechanical availability; and improved utilisation. Key EMS features include near real-time fuel level information; machine filtering by job site / geographical location; multiple machine

tracking; payload displays on medium and large wheel loaders; and geo-fencing capabilities. Machine tracking and reporting is the responsibility of the Equipment Monitoring Bureau. This is a control room based at the Barloworld Condition Monitoring Centre in Boksburg, Johannesburg. At the Bureau, a dedicated Barloworld Equipment team tracks individual machine data feeds downloaded via their onboard ECM (Electronic Control Module) units. ECM alerts sent via VisionLink notify fleet owners when standard protocols have been exceeded. Examples of typical alerts are ‘engine over

speed’, ‘high torque converter oil temperature’, ‘machine abuse’, and ‘implement hydraulic oil temperature high’. The five Cat EMS packaged options are Level 1 Access; Level 2 Inform; Level 3 Advise; Level 4 Support; and Level 5 Manage. In terms of summary overview, Level 1 Access enables users to enter the VisionLink portal to know where their equipment is and what it’s doing with remote, near real-time information. Level 2 Inform enables users to manage equipment health and uti-

lisation trends compared to benchmarks via automated reporting. With Level 3 Advise, the package moves beyond pure reporting to include expert dealer recommendations. A Barloworld Equipment condition monitoring adviser provides valuable advice about maintenance, utilisation and repair, drawing from the data trend analysis generated. Level 4 Support builds on Level 3 and caters for larger fleet owners, entailing the outsourcing of fleet maintenance, parts or repairs to a Barloworld Equipment technical services team, backed by the full EMS and SOS suite, plus a dedicated condition monitoring adviser. For mining customers, Level 5 Manage is in turn a negotiated maintenance and repair contract option where Barloworld Equipment has sole responsibility within predetermined maintenance pricing structures for agreed machine rolling Enquiry no: 57 availability targets.

Refinery raks will come in handy

ESPUMP has announced the local availability of Reliability Assurance Kits (RAKs), portable service packs from Sundyne that contain essential service parts for pumps and compressors key to ensuring smooth operations at refineries and chemical processing plants. The kits focus on maintaining gearboxes and wet ends, and contain either a standard inventory or one customised with content matched to the unique serial numbers of individual Sundyne machines. The kits represent progress beyond the traditional approach to spare parts and maintenance. Sundyne’s thinking is that the kits will ensure that the end user has the exact parts needed for planned production shutdowns, maintenance or critical repairs,

C

providing a cost effective means to keep the pump or compressor operating at peak efficiency while maintaining the warranty. All service kits are conveniently packaged in all-in-one carrying cases that can be re-ordered using a single parts number linked to the original equipment serial number, eliminating the need for the end user to track dozens of numbers in his ERP system. Typical RAK contents cover the recommended spare parts lists for a Sundyne LMV/BMP pump, a Sunflo pump or a Sundyne LMC/ BMC compressor, including the output seal, breather, bearings, a bearing plate, anti-rotation plate and optional lubrication pump. Each kit includes specification sheets and performance curves.

Cases are self-sealing to minimise contamination and corrosion, and used parts are re‑stocked using kit refills. Sundyne specialises in the design and manufacture of centrifugal integrally geared low-flow high head and multi-stage pumps to ISO 13709 and API-610 standard, and sealless magnetic drive pumps that meet API-685 and ANSI standards. Pumps and compressors are built to handle hydrocarbons at extremely high pressures and temperatures, conditions likely to render explosive any accidental emissions. Enquiry no: 58

Advanced laser alignment solution

he new TKSA 41 shaft alignment tool from global bearings and engineering solutions specialist, SKF, delivers an advanced laser alignment solution that will improve uptime and lower energy and maintenance costs. Shaft misalignment is one of the most significant contributors to premature machine failures and it is estimated that misaligned shafts can be responsible for up to 50 percent of all machine failures. A machine placed in service with less than optimal shaft alignment can lead to poor machine performance, increased noise and vibration, premature bearing wear, higher coupler wear rates and accelerated deterioration of mechanical seal.

“Shaft misalignment is easily prevented by simply using the correct tooling,” says SKF Product Manager – MAPRO, Eddie Martens. “The SKF TKSA 41 provides quick, accurate and reliable shaft alignment.” With innovative features such as free and automatic measurements and QR codes recognition, the alignment task is greatly facilitated. Free measurement enables starting a measurement at any angular position and completing all three measurements within a swipe 90° minimum. “This flexibility is particularly useful when little space is available for rotat-

Flowmeters for offshore chemical injection use

E

m e rson Process Management introduces the Micro Motion F100P and HPC010P Coriolis flowmeters to measure accurate flow rates for wellbore chemicals injected at high pressure conditions. Both meters are designed for demanding offshore applications that require robust performance with low maintenance needs. These meters will allow operators to confidently monitor chemical injection to ensure long term asset reliability and flow assurance. The F100P is a 1-inch meter with a maximum pressure rating of 6250 psi (431 bar) that targets measurement for higher flow rates typical for hydrate inhibitors. The HPC010P is the first ultra-high pressure Coriolis meter developed by Emerson, and will have a maximum operating pressure of 15,000 psi (1034 bar) to address offshore chemical injection measurement for chemicals such as corrosion, scale and asphaltene inhibitors.

“These meters are breaking boundaries for Coriolis meters in high pressure applications where positive displacement meters are today’s legacy practice. Coriolis meters deliver new value to our customers through more accurate measurement and reduced maintenance over traditional PD technology,” said Michelle Marceny, Specialty Products Business Manager for Emerson’s Micro Motion business. “Coupled with Smart Meter Verification (on-line verification of meter performance), these meters provide safe, reliable and highly repeatable performance with reduced maintenance in the toughest applications.” ”The new flowmeters will help owner-operators and service companies overcome many challenges of chemical injection applications and reduce chemical costs while increasing operational efficiency and system reliability,” said Inderpreet Shoker, analyst for the ARC Enquiry no: 64 Advisory Group.

andvik Coromant has introduced a new vibration damper that helps to maintain stable production during Deep Hole Machining (DHM) operations and support increased machine tool utilization. Using the machine control adjustment unit, the new device allows operators to step away from the machine and manage process modification without hand tools or the risk of personal injury. High material removal rates and

precision are the defining characteristics when it comes to DHM, along with hole straightness, dimensional tolerances and surface finish. With this in mind, it comes as little surprise that security is paramount to success. When producing long parts on STS (Single Tube System) machines, operators face a number of process-critical challenges. Many DHM operations are extremely demanding, pushing machining performance

ing the measuring units,” adds Martens. Automatic measurements allow for convenient hands-free operation. The TKSA 41 is able to identify a machine by reading the QR code sticker placed on the machine by the user. By scanning the QR code, the alignment history which is saved under a unique machine name can be easily retrieved and new alignments can be started and added to the machine library. The unit’s reporting functionality keeps track of alignment tasks; a report which contains details about the alignment job as well as the user such as company address and logo,

According to director Terry O’Kelly, the machine boasts superior oiling technology. “Through-head oiling of the dies and workpiece during operation cools the material, reduces friction and threading torque, and speeds material removal to maximise die life and the quality of threads.” The RIDGID Model 1233 is operated by a foot pedal switch, which ensures user safety. The machine also features a hammer-type chuck with replaceable rocker-action jaw inserts, and a forward/reverse switch for rotation in left or right hand directions, making it ideal for use on pipes, conduits and rods. O’Kelly assures that while the machine remains easy to use, customer support is available.

to the limit. This can generate higher forces and stresses within the tooling system, which in turn can become problematic in terms of vibration. As a consequence, operators are often faced with manual adjustment of the clamping unit on the vibration damper. When a large workpiece is rotating, adjusting the clamp by hand is not a straightforward operation – it is difficult to get right immediately because of the accuracy needed. What’s more, the risk of injury is elevated considerably. The Sandvik Coromant vibration damper provides the solution. The device dampens vibration, leading to first class precision and surface finish. In addition, it does this using the machine control, facilitating a

Additional features of the TKSA 41 include large 29mm CCD sensors with red line lasers and inclinometers, end users have the freedom of choice between wireless Bluetooth 4.0 LE communication or wired communication via USB cables, a 5.6” colour resistive gloves compatible touch screen mounted in a rugged display unit and a rechargeable Lithium Polymer batteries allow a minimum of 16 hours continuous operation for the measuring units and eight hours for the display unit.

Threading machine innovation “Each Dowson & Dobson branch has a RIDGID specialist and complete training is given to customers to start them off. Upon completion, they receive a certificate of compliance. Service and maintenance is also taken care of by our fully equipped workshop. We offer all customers full services and repairs on their threading machines,” he says. O’Kelly indicates that a large gap in the market exists between cheaper, low-quality machines and the RIDGID calibre of machine. “There are many sub-standard imitations and Dowson & Dobson will only supply US-based RIDGID, which is the longest-standing manufacturer of threading machines in the world, and its technology remains superior to this day,” concludes O’Kelly. stable production process, safely. There is even a self-locking unit in the event of a power loss. Of course, when vibration is under control, another benefit in that excessive tool wear is no longer an issue. The result is increased machine uptime and a safer working environment. The new vibration damper from Sandvik Coromant offers bi-directional functionality ensuring it can

odern and compact valve solutions are much in demand in plant engineering, for use in a wide range of applications. In addition to demanding requirements in terms of pressure and temperature, modular-style and expandable valve solutions are becoming increasingly popular. Through their adaptability to individual situations, a high level of flexibility can be achieved for a range of different applications with the modular GEMÜ 553 distribution valve. The GEMÜ 553 series consists of high-quality, stainless steel investment cast bodies that can be very easily connected together in series using a tried-and-tested seal system. In terms of actuator unit, pneumatically operated actuators made of stainless steel or plastic are available from the GEMÜ modular system. These can, depending on requirements, be used in combination with a widely varied range of accessories, such as electrical position indicators, combi switchboxes and/or pilot valves. Thanks to the diversity of combination options, as well as the technical properties it possesses, the valve can be deployed for a variety of different processes. In this regard, it can be used in applications where an extremely wide variety of different media are distributed, mixed or collected. In particular, the GEMÜ 553 is ideally suitable for the distribution of cooling and lubricating fluids on machine tools. In the mixing function, media with different properties can be mixed together, such as hot and cold water. In the collection application, a same medium is guided in the back flow to a common Enquiry no: 66 outlet.
