Recognising excellence

T

here is no denying that South African business is experiencing the negative effects of the lower rand, the shortage of electricity and an increasing threat from imports. However, there are more than a few good news stories which go largely unrecognised. In recognition of these success stories, Productivity SA recently hosted the Eastern Cape Regional Productivity awards in Port Elizabeth. Productivity SA’s key objectives are to create productivity knowledge and awareness, skills development and accelerated productivity, second economy productivity interventions, industry sector collaborations and strategies, turnaround solutions for companies, and labour-management collaboration. In her address at the ceremony, the Acting CEO, Lalane Janse van Rensburg, said that as the country’s fight against unemployment intensifies, it is through organisations like the finalists that poverty can be holistically tackled. These awards seek to recognise individuals, organisations and communities for their contributions to building South Africa’s productive capacity. The regional awards provide a platform to inspire a competitive and productive South Africa. Productivity improvement is considered the most effective way of ensuring ongoing competitiveness, economic growth and, consequently, more wealth for all. Productivity SA offers various tools

of savings pending implementation. AIDC EC Department Manager, Hoosain Mahomed says many of the graduates on the AIDC EC’s programme are mature, qualified engineering graduates and artisans, who for varied reasons were unemployed. Mahomed believes the graduates on the AIDC EC Programme have been equipped with critical skills required by industry. “Industrial production in South Africa has averaged a disappointing 1.47 percent from 2000 to 2015

with negative growth recorded over the past three quarters, skills are required to increase productivity and reduce manufacturing costs,’’ Mahomed said. “Skills that are able to extract gains by reducing costs and increasing income on the shop floor remain critical,’’ he says. While 38 unemployed graduates were employed through phase 1 of the programme, mainly into manufacturing businesses last year, the new candidates, part of Phase 2, are now available to industry.

Mahomed said small and large companies, including Mercedes Benz, Johnson Controls, Kansai Plascon and Bentler SA had employed programme graduates. “I anticipate all of this year’s graduates to be snapped up and to contribute significantly to their new employers,’’ Mahomed said. “Key to the success of the programme is the employability of the upskilled candidates who pass through the programme’’, Mahomed said.

M

ajor roadworks construction projects valued at R2,2 billion in the Eastern Cape will help to prepare the region for integrated growth and development, according to South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) CEO Nazir Alli. Presently, 32 engineering projects for 2015 with a combined value of R2,2 billion are taking place on the national road network in the Eastern Cape. New data released by SANRAL Southern

Region shows that 1 070 km or 23% of the national road network of 4 544 km in Eastern Cape, the province with the most national roads out of all provinces, is being upgraded, preserved or rehabilitated and that the whole 4 544 km is being maintained throughout the year. In the Eastern Cape, and as part of its 2015 road infrastructure programme for provincial and regional government, SANRAL is busy on the N2, N6, R61, R63, R65 and R67 with projects worth:

• R750 million for periodic maintenance covering 600 kilometres of the national road network • R372 million for special maintenance over a distance of 208 kilometres • R460 million for rehabilitation of the national road network covering 122 kilometres • R648 million is for special upgrading projects on 140 kilometres of the national road in the province Alli said that SANRAL road infrastructure development programmes are supporting the

goals of the country’s National Development Plan, and stressed that world-class roads for the Eastern Cape will also address poverty, unemployment, income equality, while supporting the broader goals of national and regional development, transformation and empowerment. New statistics released by SANRAL Southern Region also shows the value of conventional engineering and routine road maintenance contracts awarded to 625 SMMEs between April 2014 and March 2015 to be at R805 million, and 69.76% of beneficiaries were blackowned companies. The latest SANRAL project, which kicked off in the Eastern Cape, is the special maintenance of a 28-kilometre stretch of the N2 road between Bramlin Interchange and the Coega IDZ in Port Elizabeth. The project entails resurfacing, drainage improvements and localised repairs of existing pavement failures over 18 month period. Towards the interior between Engobo and Port St. Johns, the R61 road development and upgrading project is preparing the region catalytic socio-economic projects such as the proposed Wild Coast special economic zone (SEZ). New roads will also stimulate tourism to a pristine but underdeveloped coastal region along South Africa’s Indian Ocean coast. Enquiry no: 2

International trade at EL’s port favours imports

ORE than R7 billion in international trade went in and out of East London’s harbour in March, according to statistics compiled by the Eastern Cape Government’s Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism. The trade was slightly balanced in favour of imports, accounting for 50.4%. The figures are published in a fact sheet launched by the department this year, International Trade Tracker, which tracks all trade activities within the province on a quarterly basis. This first edition focused on activities at the Port of East London during March this year based on data from the South African Revenue Services. Future editions will include other provincial ports and a more detailed breakdown of the commodities exported and imported through them. The fact sheet shows that in March imports worth R3 538.1 million and exports valued at R3 476.2 million moved in and out of East

London harbour. More than half were to and from Europe, mostly Germany and Belgium. Exports worth R1 993.9 million went to Europe, accounting for 57% of all exports for the month. Only 1%, or R26.7 million, went to African countries. The second biggest destination for exports

was Asia, accounting for R649 million (19%). The smallest was North America with only R5.2 million in exports. South America (R533.4 million or 15%) and Australia and Oceania (R268 million or 8%) were the other major export destinations. Imports into East London were even more heavily weighted in favour of Europe, with a 76% share of imports worth a total of R2 679.8 million coming into the harbour. North America was from where the second biggest value of imports came at R601.3 million, or 17%. Imports from Asia amounted to R209.8 million (6%) and Africa R46.6 million (1%). Of African imports, almost all – R33.8 million - came from Mozambique. Although total imports exceeded total exports by R69.1 million, the greatest trade imbalance was with Europe where the value of imports exceeded value of exports by approximately R686 million.

Where practicality The Business meets service delivery Conversation

O

ne of the enduring problems facing South Africa is service delivery. Within this broad category, the most emotive and controversial discussions usually surround the delivery of houses in inaccessible rural areas. Add the challenges of communications that must be driven through traditional community structures and the building of basic housing becomes an occupation that is clearly not for the faint-hearted. However, recent achievements in the field of developing rural homes prove that the issues can be tackled and conquered. The heart of achieving success lies in a coordinated supply hierarchy and the important issues of empowering local contractors and creating job opportunities. Often, it is what is left behind for villagers in the way of embedded skills and infrastructure that is regarded as one of the most vital components of winning a tender for housing development. Binding all these demands in through a Public Private Partnership that is effective and supportive and, as recent history points out, the intricacies of building can be mastered to the benefit of all parties - even in the most difficult and remote terrains where rural poverty is endemic. Proving the point successfully has been the Eastern Cape, rated by the Human Sciences Research Council as the ‘poorest province in South Africa’. However, with the advent of effective developmental partnerships, results are being delivered. At the heart of the success stories are interventions by provincial government, Standard Bank, Tusk Construction Support Services and Builders. Explains Diale Mokgojwa (pictured), Senior Manager: Enterprise Development at Standard Bank: “The challenges facing delivery of housing in rural areas begins with the procurement stage. Quite rightly on a provincial level, these processes tend to concentrate on development of people through the allocation of building tenders to small construction business owners. As these businesses gain experience and expertise, they progress up the supply chain hierarchy with ratings by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) used to provide guidance of their suitability for certain projects. The higher their CIDB rating, the higher the value of construction opportunities awarded to them by government.” Reality dictates that the desire for work and reward results in intense competition. It is at

this stage that aspirant contractors go wrong. Typically, says Pieter de Villiers, Director: Corporate Services at Tusk Construction Support Services, small contractors responding to tenders have erred by: • Not understanding that the costs of materials can escalate dramatically when logistics are difficult. • Not taking account of the nature of the development. • Underestimating the quantities of materials required for a project. • A lack of business skills and the ability to exert proper financial disciplines on a project. Although the in-built difficulties and geographical complications are daunting, it has been proved in the Eastern Cape that the inherent risks involved can be brought under control so that quality projects can be delivered. In the case of some projects that are underway in the Eastern Cape, ‘behind the scenes’ support and assistance has come from Standard Bank, Tusk Construction Support Services and Builders who work together to ensure contractors are successful. The business chain begins with Tusk, who extends their training and supervision service to small builders who have managed to climb on to the tender ladder, but lack the resources and formal training to simply ‘go it alone.’ As experienced construction project managers they assess the abilities of the contractor concerned, the value and complexity of the proposed job and then refer the ‘approved’ contractor to Standard Bank. The bank then provides the finance that enables the entire team to go forward and bid for projects. Evaluation of projects and assisting with costings is undertaken by experienced engineers and builders who are assisted by professional quantity surveyors. Closing the loop is Builders, which through its retail outlets: Builders Warehouse and Builders Trade Depot, provides lines of credit for the builder. Logistics assistance is offered with materials being delivered from local yards. The final element in the end-to-end support system is the Tusk construction support manager who attends site meetings, facilitates work with the contractor and acts as an informal quality manager. All benefit from the process-especially the contractors who literally ‘earn while they learn’ gathering the skills they need to make their businesses self-sufficient. Enquiry no: 7

NE of the wisest men in history, former President Nelson Mandela, said: “Difficulties break some men, but make others.” We are facing tough economic times at the moment but I believe that it is in these times of difficulty, that some Nelson Mandela Bay companies will be able to “make it” beyond their own expectations, by thinking creatively, strategically and collaboratively. In a recent frank discussion about our economy with economist Derek Zimmerman from Rand International Capital, I have come to realize that the weakening Rand is a bit of a mixed bag for the economy of Nelson Mandela Bay – essentially bad news for importers, but slightly better news in terms of exporting. The weakening of the Rand means that we get less and less value for the same Rand and effectively will pay more for the same item. In South Africa, we import more than we export which means a weakening Rand puts pressure on the balance of payments, which undeniably has negative consequences for the economy. Zimmerman said the only benefit of a weakening Rand could be that exporters, such as the Nelson Mandela Bay automotive industry, would receive more cash for the same item. With Africa described as the “next frontier”, some multinational companies currently oper-

bay view Kevin Hustler

ating in the city have greater revenue income streams coming from outside of South Africa’s borders, than inside. The tourism industry in particular should also capitalize on the weaker Rand. In terms of manufacturing, however, Zimmerman cautioned that the weaker Rand is a short-term gain, as over time the components imported would increase in price due to the weaker Rand, and eventually the same profit point would be reached in principle. The ripple effect on the local economy and knockon effect on consumers and price competitiveness in international markets are all points of grave concern. Hence as business leaders we need to do whatever it takes to ensure an enabling environment for economic growth, by thinking more creatively and collaboratively about the challenges facing us. As South Africans and as a city, we have proven over time that we are rather resourceful and resilient. With the right blend of careful application to the situation and a collective or collaborative effort from all sectors of our society, at both public and private sector level, we will be able to triumph over the economic Enquiry no: 7 downturn.

R670 million investment at Uitenhage Tyre Factory

G

oodyear South Africa recently announced it will invest R670 million to increase production of high-valueadded (HVA) consumer tyres at its Uitenhage manufacturing plant to drive profitable growth and meet market demands. The investment plan would see the introduction of state-of-the-art manufacturing technology for the plant and will enable Goodyear to meet the strong and growing market demand for HVA consumer tyres in South Africa and Sub-Sahara Africa. The tyre market in South Africa and Sub-Sahara Africa is expected to experience double-digit growth through 2020 led by the consumer segment. “This is an important investment by Goodyear and is consistent with our strategy to serve the needs of our customers and the company’s focus to invest in high return projects that drive profitable growth,” said Jean-Jacques Wiroth, managing director of Goodyear South Africa. The new technology and accompanying comprehensive employee training will further improve the plant’s capability and capacity to produce Low Rolling Resistance tyres that promote fuel economy in vehicles to meet the growing demand from vehicle manufacturers and the replacement market, as well as meet the increase in market requirements for HVA 4X4 SUV tyres. To allow for this expansion, Goodyear South Africa also proposes to relocate the plant’s production of Medium Radial Truck tyres (MRT) to other plants across the company’s Europe, Middle East and Africa

safrench

region. Under the proposals, Goodyear has affirmed its intention to consult with the union representatives and employees who are currently working in the MRT area to minimise the impact through offering a variety of alternatives. Subject to consultation, the company expects to be substantially complete with the investment plans by the end of 2016 or early 2017. The company does not anticipate disruption to tyre services or supply during this period. Goodyear South Africa will continue to communicate with union representatives, employees, customers, business partners and local authorities in an on-going dialogue together throughout the consultation process. How the plummeting rand impacts your insurance

he past few weeks has seen many of us holding our breath as we witnessed the rand plunge against the US dollar, the Euro, and the British Pound. Jan Drahota, Executive Director: Business and Specialist Insurances at Indwe Risk Services says that over the past eighteen months, the depreciation is in the region of 35%. That’s a significant figure and one that should make us all sit up and take notice. The fall of the rand affects many aspects of life, and one of them is the replacement values of insured property.

As Drahota points out, “Those who import plant and equipment, raw materials or stock in trade from outside South Africa need to urgently review their insured values.” This also applies to those who, while they purchase raw materials or commodities (for example, plastics, polymers, certain metals and alloys) in South Africa, the prices are set on international markets and linked to the US dollar. Innovation: the key to climate change?

I

magine your shock and horror when one morning you awake to find your home being devoured by the sea! This was the reality that some home owners and holiday makers found themselves in recently in the Great Kei area. Was this due to climate change or just a freak storm? I believe the first question, we should be asking ourselves, is do we as businesses believe in climate change? If so, do we have innovative plans and strategies to prepare our homes and businesses for these types of eventualities? I believe that some businesses have. As innovation and new technology abound in the Border-Kei area, collaborative institutions such as the East London Industrial Development Zone’s (ELIDZ) Science and Technology Park creating new intellectual property (IP) annually in the energy efficiency and renewable energy space. would highly recommend a visit. The Eastern Cape Information Technology Initiative (ECITI) - an incubation programme for young entrepreneurs in the IT industry - has a phenomenal success rate, and as the Border-Kei Chamber of Business, we are using ECITI to develop our 52/7 Annual Events Calendar In Agriculture, the SA Agri Academy (SAAA)have a 90 percent success rate in South Africa with their advanced cluster approach and is by far the most successfully operated NPO’s providing training, capacity building and cluster development in the country. As such the BKCOB have partnered with the SAAA to identify and establish clusters in Border-Kei area. We have also established a business centre aimed at providing training for identified clusters as well as providing laptops, printers and free WiFi to SMME’s. On the issue of water, I am mindful that given the abundant rains over the last six months, priorities have shifted. Let us not be lulled into a false sense of water security however, and we confirm that unless radical steps are taken, virtually the entire Eastern Cape will be on water restrictions within the next five years. We must plan now for the future – and herein lies the opportunity to be creative in our solutions as a country. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a highly efficient fog harvesting system, which would work well in the Stutterheim area, or our very own South African solution, Water from Air which has been available since 2011 providing a possible answer to future water shortages. On a similar note, while we haven’t had load shedding this past month, energy security is still a major concern for business and long term solutions needed. While nuclear may be on the cards, I do not feel it would be in the best interest of South Africa to do so – the risks associated are just too high – as seen at Chernobyl and more recently Fukushima. As the IDP review process roles around – the roadmap for municipal planning and budgetary allocation for the next five years is currently under review across various municipalities in the province. The BKCOB through its various committees are engaging with the BCMM on key issues such as water and sanitation, infrastructure and port development. However we encourage every business to participate – if we don’t engage now, we cannot complain later… Les Holbrook Executive Director, Border-Kei Chamber of Business

sing PMD technology, the new 3D camera from ifm electronic sees at a glance, various scenes and objects in spatial dimensions. The heart of this device is a new image chip with 23 000 receiving elements. Output is via a grey-scale value and distance image, while evaluation is possible using common libraries. In contrast to laser scanners which only have one receiving element, the image chip of the new O3D type device features 23 000 pixels. Therefore the 3D camera has no moving parts, making it wear-free and robust. The intuitive parameter setting software

allows easy and quick setting of the camera-specific parameters. Connection to MATLAB, HALCON, PCL and ROS is possible. As each individual pixel measures the distance, it is, for example, possible to precisely size and position cases, parcels and pallets. Moreover, the device facilitates automatic loading and unloading of containers, storage room optimisation, collision avoidance, navigation of driverless transport systems, as well as counting people and room monitoring. Laser distance sensor with new dual mode R ET Automation Controls is now stocking the updated industry leading Q4X laser distance sensor with a new dual teach mode. Featuring new firmware, the Q4X dual teach mode sensor combines window thresholds on both target distance and target reflected intensity, allowing the Q4X to reliably solve difficult applications with ease. The Q4X can now detect clear objects without requiring a retro-reflector. Dual mode can be used to error-proof applications by ensuring that the correct colour part is located at the correct position. Banner’s Q4X reliably detects distance changes as small as 1 mm and covers a 25 to 300 mm range. The sensor was already ideal for difficult distance-based sensing applications as it easily detects objects regardless

of target surface reflectivity, including black foam on black plastic, black rubber in front of metal, multicolour packaging and targets of all colours. Now with the dual teach mode, the sensor can detect small changes in reflected intensity for targets inside the distance threshold. This powerful combination allows the Q4X to solve many new applications. “Incorporating the innovative dual teach mode into the nextgeneration Q4X sensor provides our customers with a more powerful sensing solution for their most difficult applications,” said Dennis Smith, Senior Technical Marketing Manager, Banner Engineering. “With combined intensity and distance thresholds, the Q4X extends its world class sensing

performance to clear object detection and common error-proofing, or poka yoke, applications.” Offering a simplified user experience, the Q4X includes a bright readout on a highly visible, angled four-digit display that is easily viewed from multiple vantage points. The Q4X also offers intuitive user setup utilizing three tactile push-buttons conveniently located below the display. The Q4X is constructed with robust housing rated to IP67, IP68 or IP69K, allowing use in wet and high-pressure washdown environments, durable FDA-grade stainless steel resists mechanical impact, over tightening, extreme vibration and aggressive cleaning Enquiry no: 15 procedures.

'Expanding' quality and consistency

I

t is all too easy for contractors to accept sub-standard expanded metal products, thinking that the specifications conform to the required performance standards. In some instances, advertised specifications bear no resemblance to the product supplied, all because of a perceived cost advantage, and there is a growing concern that substandard specifications will slowly become the accepted industry norm. These are the views of Dodds Pringle, Managing Director of Vital Engineering, manufacturers of the Vitex range of expanded metal products, as well as gratings, stair treads and safety handrails. Vital Engineering began manufacturing a small range of expanded metal some fifteen years ago, and has now expanded its offering substantially, featuring products of worldclass quality. “Our now extensive range includes plaster lathes, filter meshes, architectural meshes, conveyor walkway expanded metals and heavy duty

(8mm material thickness) security meshes for doors, windows and blast screens,” says Pringle. Pringle cautions against dubious practises in the industry, in which mesh sizes become ‘stretched’ in a bid to use less material. “Thinner, lighter material compromises the quality and performance of the end-product, and the problem is that otherwise discerning specifiers, designers and customers end up unwittingly paying top dollar for something that is sub-standard. “

“Flattened mesh has also become a problem in the industry, where certain suppliers ‘over-flatten’ to obtain the required apertures, hardening the material to cracking point and ‘thinning’ it out of specification, unbeknownst to the end-user.” Pringle advises buyers to conduct simple checks, such as lining up a number of the same sheets to ascertain aperture consistency. Verniers and other measuring equipment can also be used to assess the material and strand thicknesses for conformity to specifications, and to more accurately determine what the client has paid for. “Similar issues prevail in handrail stanchions, where clients are charged a discounted price but are supplied with thinner wall thicknesses well below the specification. “Vital Engineering’s ‘Vitex’ range of products are manufactured and tested according to international and local standards to ensure conformity and to prevent costly personal injury Enquiry no: 16 (PI) claims.

Hydraulic electrode control system

B

MG’s specialist hydraulics division - BMG Hydraulics – has recently completed the design and manufacture of a new hydraulic control system for precise furnace functions, including temperature control, required during the production of ferrochrome. “This new hydraulic electrode control system replaced the existing system after a transformer explosion caused substantial damage at one of the mine’s furnaces,” says Dustin Pereira, Projects and Engineering Manager, BMG Hydraulics. “The entire replacement system was designed, fabricated, tested and supplied to the mine in less than three weeks." "A system of similar complexity and size would normally be completed in about 12 weeks. “Hydraulic control systems are essential for furnace functions including the regulation of electrodes

to maintain constant heat - and therefore play a critical role during ferrochrome production. Hydraulic systems also control power regulation, in addition to case slipping, core slipping and nipplage." “All components that needed to be replaced were supplied by BMG hydraulics, which means the mine has immediate access to specialist services and quality spares.”

BMG Hydraulics enhances its manufacture and repair service with a total design solution, using the latest CAD and CAM software. This service encompasses expertise from design, to manufacturing and assembly of a complete system. The company offers the industrial and mining sector a comprehensive service for hydraulic systems that combines quality branded components, hydraulic engineering and contamination control, as well as a test and repair service, to ensure optimum performance and extended service life. BMG’s service to the hydraulics sector includes a mobile workshop that is fitted with tools, equipment and quality branded spares to be able to efficiently perform functions like troubleshooting, on-site repairs, installations, commissioning and system flushing. New angled support pedestal for split bearings istributed in Southern Africa D by authorised distributor Bearings International since 1937, Cooper Roller Bearings recently launched a new angled support pedestal for Cooper split bearings at Belton 18 marking the latest collaboration between these two leading companies. The new product represents the latest refinement of the initial development of the pedestal in the 1960s. The new version saves a considerable amount of time and manpower due to the fact that it slides directly under the shaft at an angle, which does not need to be raised with a hoist or a jack. Available previously as a bespoke solution, Cooper is now rolling out the angled pedestal across its standard range of SN and SD equivalent pedestal housings. Coupled with Cooper split bearings, customers and end users now have a total solution to reduce their maintenance requirements and subsequent downtime. “With a split bearing, all of the components are essentially split, including the pedestal. The angled pedestal from Cooper facilitates quick insertion of the pedestal underneath the shaft. What Cooper has developed is a pedestal that, instead of being horizontal with the base, is angled to allow it to slide easily in under the shaft,” says Matthew Tyler, Cooper product manager, Bearings International. Cooper split bearings are split to the shaft, which means that all necessary components can be changed-out in as short a period as possible. Combined with the new angled pedestal, proactive maintenance is now simpler than ever, also requiring minimal equipment such as allen keys and a few basic Enquiry no: 22 tools.

services and support. The company employs extensive R&D to design and engineer equipment that not only ensures optimised throughput of product but is also affordable and durable. The company’s BATAC jigs are becoming increasingly popular in the iron ore beneficiation sector due to their rapid detection of changes in the raw material, quick reaction to such changes and easy operation. BATAC jig technology has excellent separation accuracy, is relatively small in footprint and has a comparatively low capital cost. Similarly, the robust Jones Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) is characterised by a high throughput capability, coupled with simple maintenance and lower energy consumption. “We find that the compact unit is popular for treating feebly magnetic minerals with a particle range from 20 µm up to 1 mm ,” says Johannes Kottmann, managing director of MBE Minerals SA . Operating at 5.000 Gauss on the drum surface, the PERMOS MIMS medium-intensity magnetic drum separator allows wet and dry separation of high grade coarse and fine ferromagnetic and paramagnetic ores with a medium susceptibility, at high throughput rates, and with minimal energy consumption. It is suitable for various applications which in the past could be treated only with electromagnets. MBE Minerals’ Pneuflot technology improves product quality and overall recovery. It is an attractive alternative to conventional agitator flotation due to its lower capex and opex, as well as reduced wear and higher Enquiry no: 20 levels of efficiency.

This private pathology practice conducts both commercial and clinical trials to very high standards from across the country as well as from their large footprint across the African continent. With the TB lab’s extremely high throughput there is a strong emphasis on staff safety. Lancet had outgrown their existing facility and due to the increased demand for TB testing they have had to double their capacity. The number of tests from January 2014 to January 2015 showed an increase of over 30 percent. The existing BSL 3 Laboratory at Lancet had become too small and very cramped and Royal

ocal company, Mutual Hardened Doors, has been experiencing a growing demand for their approved, certified range of fire doors, says the company’s Peter Jackson. “Not only are we price competitive, but our doors comply with National Test Standards as per SABS Fire Rated 1253:2003.” As a manufacturer of a comprehensive range of doors, however, the company is concerned about some local authorities and building contractors who continue to source and use doors which fail to be compliant with regulations. In terms of these regulations, approved fire doors require that the manufacturer’s label be affixed to both frame and door leaf. This label should contain the manufacturer’s name, the class of fire door, the date of manufacture and the serial number of the product. In addition it should also specify that the product complies with the specified National Test Standards. The presence of this label allows for ease

The work was carried out in compliance with international best practice as well as local interpretations of the Canadian

of onsite inspections by the architect, the developer and the contractor and allows the Fire Department to sign off the doors as conforming to specifications. In addition, the manufacturer is required to record the serial number of each door and provide, on request, a current copy of the applicable SABS fire test. Jackson believes strongly those insurance underwriters have a vested interest in ensuring that the properties they insure use fire doors that comply with National Building Standards. A partnership with GEZE SA - an international leader in design and supply of approved emergency exit hardware allows MHD to offer a range of factory fitted hardware. Non-slip grating increases safety in the workplace

large percentage of workplace injuries are due to slips, trips and falls. These accidents are often attributed to slippery floor surfaces, unnoticed obstructions and employees being distracted. According to Elaine van Rooyen, marketing manager at Andrew Mentis, by installing appropriate non-slip grating many of these accidents can be avoided. She says that the company’s non-slip Rectagrid RS40 grating provides a safe and efficient way of draining away slippery substances whilst simultaneously creating a slip resistant, high traction work area. “This patented non-slip grating is proving so popular that we anticipate it will eventually replace serrated grating completely. The secret to the product’s success is a combination of the design, engineering and manufacturing process which result in the positive raised sections that create multi-directional obstructions on the top of each bearer bar,” says van Rooyen. Van Rooyen explains that the pressure locking system used in the Rectagrid RS40 secures the bearer and transverse bars, resulting in an uncompromised walkway surface that is both solid and safe in all applications. “The harsh environments experienced in mineral beneficiation plants, chemical plants and the food and beverage industry provide

a challenge for safe underfoot conditions. However, unlike serrated grating, the integrity of the loading capability of non-slip grating is ensured providing both mitigation against slips and trips as well as a structurally sound surface.” The choice of footwear in the workplace is often a consideration when implementing walkways and stairs. However, the non-slip characteristics of the Rectagrid RS40 are effective in all directions, so employees are equally safe wearing leatherand rubber-soled shoes and boots. The build-up of dirt that is typically associated with serrated grating is absent with non-slip Rectagrid RS40 grating, which is characterised by its superior self-cleaning properties. “This ability to effectively eliminate dirt as well as moisture makes this the ideal surface for inclement conditions such as industrial operations or in damp or wet conditions such as water and wastewater plants. Furthermore, maximised traction is provided by the larger surface contact area for both pedestrians and forklifts. The end result is a safe, cost effective and low maintenance underfoot surface that provides reduced employee downtime and the associated costs that result from slips and trips,” van Rooyen concludes. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH, SAFETY, FIRE & SECURITY

Increasing transportation vehicle safety

F

ogmaker fire suppression systems have a solid reputation for protecting both human life and assets within the global bus transportation market. Designed and manufactured in Sweden, Fogmaker has an installed base of more than 100 000 systems in over 50 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and the USA. The product for closed engine compartments is distributed in southern Africa by Fogmaker South Africa. This high pressure water mist fire suppression system is rapidly gaining popularity within a number of sectors where its value in terms of decreased downtime and reduced insurance risk are apparent. John Russell, general manager for Fogmaker South Africa, says that uptake has been high in the bus industry, and

is now gaining traction in industries using underground vehicles, forestry machines, marine vessels and other specialised mobile machinery. “Due to the use of hydro-pneumatic fire detection, which is totally independent of any electric circuit, both the detection and suppression systems work even when the electricity

supply is disconnected. Resetting a released suppression system is simpler, easier, faster and more effective than with powder or foam suppression systems. The total life span cost of Fogmaker suppression systems is low compared with competing systems,” Russell says. The patented discharge piston allows for a complete discharge, regardless of the orientation of the bottle. This, together with its high-pressure (100 bar) operation, results in a smaller installation footprint. A further benefit is that the system can be installed in confined, out-of-the-way spaces in closer proximity to the required protection location. The Fogmaker is manufactured according to both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards and has obtained approval from the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in the USA, the Swedish Fire Defence Association’s SBF 128 and Australia’s AS 5062 standards. “The introduction of Fogmaker to the local market underlines our business philosophy of partnering with leading specialist suppliers of technology solutions that ensure the protection and efficient management of transportation Enquiry no: 27 assets,” Russell concludes.

agnet’s extensive portfolio of electrical equipment, industrial instrumentation and automation systems, encompasses robust lockout/tagout devices, designed to restrict access to hazardous equipment, thus minimising the risk of accidents or injury of employees. “These locally manufactured lockout/tagout devices, which ensure optimum protection of high risk machinery, are specially labelled to individual requirements, to warn against the dangers of equipment in industrial environments,” says Brian Howarth, managing director, Magnet. “A plant, which has implemented the correct lockout/tagout procedures, minimises the risk of injury or accidents caused by negligence during maintenance and repairs of electrical equipment. “These devices are designed to the specific lock-out requirements of leading circuit breaker manufacturers, including Schneider,

ABB, Siemens, Eaton and Mitsubishi. Whether the panel door is open or closed, this lockout/ tagout system ensures absolute safety. “By disengaging lockout hasps - which are safety precaution devices used to fasten a door or gate - the employee acknowledges awareness of the potential danger of machinery in the restricted area. This system is more effective than simply having a danger sign alongside equipment.” Keys are stored in distinctly marked safety

Power distribution enclosures

L

egrand’s range of XL³ modular power distribution enclosures complies with international IEC 61439 standards that have replaced the previous edition of IEC 60439. “The certification of enclosures is defined by IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 for power switchgear and controlgear assemblies. This accreditation formulates the definitions, operating conditions, structural provisions, technical characteristics and tests for low voltage wiring accessory assemblies,” says Marc Naidoo, projects and technical co-ordinator, Legrand SA. “Modifications to these IEC standards encompass three different, but equivalent types for verifying requirements. These are verification by a test, verification by calculation or measurement, or verification by satisfying design rules. Unlike IEC 60439-1, conformity cannot be

established simply on the basis of the general rules of the standard. Assemblies must comply with the specific standards dedicated to them. Compliance with standard IEC 61439-2 also enables the CE mark to be attached, if required.” There are 13 standard tests for the certification of pre-equipped enclosures, which are an additional guarantee of safe operation. Legrand is also committed to carrying out ten type tests, characteristics that need to be checked include resistance of materials and parts, temperature rise, degree of protection (IP), dielectric properties and short circuit resistance, as well as electric shock protection and integrity of the protective circuit. Clearances and creepage distances, mechanical operation and electromagnetic

enclosures, which are mounted on a wall close to the machinery. These enclosures act as a safety check points to prevent the inadvertent start-up of a machine that is undergoing repair or maintenance. Included in this range are plug, cable, valve, cylinder and pneumatic lockouts, as well as circuit breaker and electrical panel devices. Magnet also supplies lockout padlocks and accessories, lockout and tagout stations and hanging and self adhesive signs and labels. These corrosion resistant devices, which withstand operation in harsh and hazardous environments, ensure enhanced safety of LV and HP panels, transformer rooms, crushers, rollers and shunting equipment, as well as caging around machinery. In safe environments, productivity is optimised, as there is no downtime resulting from unnecessary accidents or injury. Enquiry no: 28

compatibility are also important. Standards IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 also require final checks on all wired assemblies. These checks certify that the essential characteristics linked to safety are fully complied with. Legrand’s XL³ cabinets and enclosures - for sites between 160 A and 6 300 A - provide solutions adapted to meet exact site power distribution needs in industrial, commercial and residential environments. Most importantly, these units comply with every part of the standard IEC 61439 to guarantee reliability and total protection of the installation. Each model in this range includes a selection of sizes, versions and equipment. XL³ metallic or plastic enclosures, with index protection ratings between IP 30 and IP 55, have a short circuit resistance from 20 kA to 110 kA. Enquiry no: 29

INDUSTRIAL CLEANING

SA’s first jetting/vacuum combi truck with water recycling capabilities

I

FAT Environmental Technology Forum Africa presented the ideal platform for Goscor Cleaning Equipment - part of the Goscor Group of Companies - to launch two vacuum trucks and a Mobile Vacuum Trailer built by local specialist vacuum manufacturer, Highpoint Vacuum. The HPVR-1000 Jetting/Vacuum combination truck with a unique water recycling capability is purpose-built for cleaning sewerage and storm water drains. The HPVR-1000 recycler’s impressive jetting and vacuum capacities of up to 500 litres per minute at 200 bar and 3 200 cubic metres per hour respectively, make light work of unclogging sand, silt and foreign materials from storm water drains. “We designed and manufactured this highly specialised vehicle locally with the exception of the recycling system which we sourced

from Dietmar Kaiser, a market leader in this field based in Lichtenstein,” states Highpoint Vacuum CEO David Gade. Explaining how the recycling process works, Gade says that once the vacuumed (dirty) water settles in the vacuum tank, it is filtered and foreign matter is removed by the recycling system. Water loss is minimal during this continuous process and close to 100% of the water is recaptured for re-use in the jetting process. Gregory Venter, General Manager at Goscor Cleaning Equipment is extremely excited about introducing this new recycler into the local market. “Recycling jetting water can save up to a remarkable 20 million litres of clean water per annum. In addition, the machine’s capacity to hold 6000 litres of clean water saves fuel and time

eighing just 3.5 kg, Kärcher’s new T/71 Classic dry vacuum is compact and easy to handle. Moreover, with 230mbar underpressure, resulting in high suction power, and especially quiet operation (63 dB(A)), it satisfies the demanding requirements of commercial users. The vacuum offers an economical entry into floor cleaning,

especially for commercial cleaning contractors and the hospitality industry. Its light weight makes the T 7/1 Classic easy to transport. The ergonomic handle on the suction head makes the vacuum portable with one hand, which makes jobs such as stair cleaning considerably easier. With its high suction power the T 7/1 reliably picks up dirt, enabling con-

and substantially improves productivity as work is no longer interrupted by water collection. tinuous, time saving operation. Its low operating noise level makes this vacuum especially suitable for use in noisesensitive areas and during public opening hours. A fleece filter bag supplied as standard holds almost twice as much dust as a comparable paper filter bag. The permanent main filter is washable, eliminating the need for an additional dust bag. That reduces operating costs. The T 7/1 Classic comes with a floor nozzle that is suitable for both hard and textile floor coverings.

This innovation is a tremendous scoop for South Africa and it opens up great opportunities for emerging contractors.” He adds that the recycling system carries a 12 month warranty. The versatile truck can also be used for normal vacuuming or jetting thanks to a partition between the recycling section and the vacuum tank. The HPVR-1000 recycler can be built on most local truck chassis and Gade adds that they work closely with truck manufacturers “to ensure an integrated product so that there is a union between the recycler system and the truck, ensuring that the electronic interface works as one.” The truck is extremely easy to operate and requires a team of only two or three people. Eliminating hang-ups in coal supply at power station

E

xcessive moisture in coal increases the cohesiveness of the material, which in turn results in ‘hang-ups’ that disrupt the material flow. Leading rope access specialist Skyriders has assisted a large coal-fired power plant in successfully overcoming this issue. A total of 16 Skyriders rope access technicians completed the challenging project within one week at the end of July 2015. Due to the sheer volume of coal hang-ups, Skyriders marketing manager Mike Zinn indicates that two sets of five-man rope access teams operated day and night shifts. “Two teams of highly-experienced rope access technicians used breakers and

other mechanical means to remove the coal hang-ups from the silo. If left unchecked, hang-ups hinder the free flow of coal, as it tends to block transfer chutes where coal is transferred from one conveyor to another. It also limits the storage capacity of the silo,” he explains. The teams of technicians were each supported by a three-man Skyriders confined space standby rescue team, in order to ensure that the highest standards of safety were maintained at all times. Zinn asserts that a project of this nature is most suitable with the use of a rope access systems. “Setting up the more traditional access

methods can take hours or even days, and large equipment will not fit in to a confined work space environment. " "The rope access systems are highly-flexible and allow ease-of-movement around the silo, as well as quick exit when the conveyers run,” he adds. In addition to the removal of coal hangups, the Skyriders team was also responsible for the high-pressure washing of an internal silo surface. “We successfully completed the project without any major challenges, due to the fact that we boast comprehensive experience in completing similar projects in the cement industry,” Zinn conEnquiry no: 34 cludes.

ecker Mining South Africa’s range of Tractel personal protection equipment, which is designed for safe and reliable use during industrial cleaning, includes the Travsmart lifeline system. Travsmart is a single cable lifeline that can be safely used by up to five workers at one time. This system facilitates automatic travel through intermediate and turn anchors, with no need for manual intervention. A user can pass right or left of the lifeline, without having to unhook the system when changing sides. This is a key feature for enhanced safety during installations, cleaning or maintenance. The flexibility of this system means it can be easily installed in all configurations, with inclinations of up to 15°. Travsmart can be mounted on traditional and low strength structures, including under ceilings, on walls, under an inclined surface, on the ground or on a post. This lifeline cable system, which is quick to set up without the need for heavy assembly tools, eliminates the risks of an incorrectly crimped cable end. Intermediate supports can be easily changed if necessary and in the event of a fall, components are replaced, without having to disassemble the entire the lifeline. Travsmart consists of a slider - which is an opening-type anchor point that slides on the lifeline cable and can be positioned and removed anywhere along the lifeline. For user convenience, this device can be opened with one hand only. This positive-locking safety slider prevents an unintentional release from the lifeline. Self-blocking end-pieces ensure the lifeline cable is always under tension (100 kg). Other components include galvanised or stainless steel cable (5 strands x 19 wires, or 7 strands x 19 wires) with a cable thimble, INRS shock absorbers, as well as intermediate and angle supports. PUMPS, VALVES, PIPES & FITTINGS

New branch opens locally X ylem Water Solutions recently opened a new branch in Port Elizabeth in response to the need to extend their services to customers in the Eastern Cape. This move is in line with Xylem’s commitment to provide world class pump and water solutions to customers within their area of operations. Xylem Water Solutions South Africa is a thought-leader in the waterindustry; providing tailor-made solutions throughout the water-cycle. The company owns several globally renowned pumpbrands, including: Lowara; Godwin and Flygt. With its new base of operations in Port Elizabeth; Xylem is poised to address clients’ needs with a host of superior

products, right on their doorstep. “We have been active in the Eastern Cape for many years, servicing the area from our branch in Cape Town through a locally based representative;” explains Bennie Thiart, Sales Director at Xylem SA. “With this experience, we decided that a direct approach to the market with full on-site, local representation will benefit our existing customers and allow us to diversify into the Eastern Cape market”; he adds. With the official opening of the new branch in mind, the Xylem-team identified special top-line products that will greatly benefit clients in a variety of sectors. The newly released Lowara e-NSC high efficiency end -suction pump range will be available from the branch. This

range has been specifically developed for the agricultural and building services markets. However; the opening of the new branch

Saving water through plastics

T

he earth is parched. Worldwide, countries are facing periods of intense drought. In South Africa water restrictions were recently imposed on several areas in KwaZulu-Natal following insufficient rainfall in the province. In light of this, the Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturer’s Association (SAPPMA), is pushing for a longer-term solution: Saving water with plastic pipes. “For the past four years in particular, we have been voicing our concerns over the severe pollution in our water sources, water losses caused by leaks and wastage, and the lacking water infrastructure that is expected to support the rapidly increasing demand,” says Jan Venter, Chairman of the SAPPMA, a nonprofit association that represents more than 80 % of the plastic pipe produced in South Africa. “Pipelines lie at the heart of South Africa’s infrastructure and should be replaced before they fail. Water distribution, waste disposal, irrigation and telecommunications all rely on pipelines to function,” Venter explains. Local plastic pipe manufacturers and install-

ers are hoping that these concerns will mean old pipelines being replaced by plastic pipes made from PVC or high density polyethylene. Apart from having a lifetime that is more than double of that of other materials, plastic pipes are quicker and easier to install, have lower failure rates, less corrosion, fewer joint leak prevention and are lower in price. Although the South African plastic pipe industry is relatively small, it is of extreme importance in the development and maintenance of the country’s infrastructure, as pipes made from PVC of HDPE are required to last in excess of 100 years. Considering that the majority of South Africa’s pipelines were installed in the early 1950’s and 1960’s and made from cement, asbestos or steel, Venter warns that these pipes have been corroded by now. “Two major causes of water loss are corrosion and poor jointing. For this reason, old steel or asbestos pipes around the world are being replaced with plastic pipes, because they do not rust and the joints are leak-proof if done correctly. We therefore feel it’s our responsibility to keep pushing for the country’s water infrastructure to be upgraded, and also to educate consumers, engineers and other decision makers about the benefits of using plastic pipes,” Venter said. Plastic pipes are lightweight and easy to handle, easy to join, available in a range of sizes and pressure ratings and have low frictional resistance, with hydraulic properties that remain virtually unchanged over its useful life, resulting in lower energy use and pumping costs. pump solutions into Africa

ntegrated Pump Technology (IPT), the exclusive distributor in southern Africa for Grindex, is achieving considerable success with its Bravo submersible pump range which is proving an efficient, cost effective alternate solution to vertical spindle pumps. This is one of numerous IPT products gaining traction within the mining sector which will ensure its growth trajectory continues. Because submersible pumps operate in the slurry, infrastructure construction is unnecessary and pumping start-up is immediate. Bravo submersible pumps, in particular, are engineered to pump slurry and fluids with a high content of abrasive solids, with particle sizes up to 50 mm. The range offers reliable pumping performance and the pumps are fitted with a cooling jacket and an agitator for effective slurry handling, eliminating the issue of silt build-up. “This new approach to pumping slurry with submersibles guarantees higher efficiency rates, lower running costs as well as lower maintenance costs. It is the most cost effective pumping solution for slurry handling applications,” Adams says. According to Adams, 90% of IPT’s business

is being generated from southern African mining projects, largely as a result of this product range’s escalating success. Total sales contribution from the product is up from 10% last year to 30% at present – with over 120 Bravo pumps already installed this year. Adams also refers to IPT’s service delivery and after sales offering, pointing out that it is another company strength. Support into Africa is through a well-positioned network which covers Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique and Zimbabwe with fully trained representatives who provide customised product recommendations to customers in these regions based on on-site evaluations. In line with its growing slurry pump presence, IPT has also developed a new slurry product which easily removes silt and built-up sediments from lined water storage areas. Locally designed and engineered, IPT’s SlurrySucker dredge unit effectively de-silts or de-slimes dams without damaging the lining, Adams explains. Reliable flowmeter for industry

SSTech’s renowned specialist for temperature and pressure measurement technology and liquid analysis Jumo, has introduced the flowTRANS MAG S01 magnetic inductive flowmeter that offers reliable quality for industrial applications. Magnetic inductive flow metering is one of the most common measurement methods. This popularity can be attributed to the suitability for a wide range of applications, a high degree of measuring accuracy and easy startup. The standard flowTRANS is available for nominal widths ranging from DN 10 to DN 300. The conductivity of the measuring medium must be at least 5 µS/ cm; the maximum temperature lies at 130 ºC. Other versions can be supplied on request. The flowmeter comes either as a compact device with protection type IP67 or with a separate transmitter (IP68).

DIN versions or ASME versions are available as flange. The flowmeters are lined with PTFE, a material that is impervious to acids and lyes, is light and weather resistant as well as abrasion resistant to small particles. A more cost effective lining made of hard rubber is available for large nominal widths. These devices are simple and convenient to configure, either on the device or using PC software. The transmitter automatically detects the sensor and when the auxiliary energy is switched on, the data from the SensorMemory is loaded automatically. Enquiry no: 39

Ultra high performance plug valves for slurry A Z-Armaturen South Africa Pty Ltd (AZ), a subsidiary of the German operation, AZ-Armaturen Group, is, among other products, a manufacturer of highquality, sleeved, self-lubricating plug valves which are intended primarily for use in the aggressive and abrasive environments of the chemical, petrochemical and mining industries. In 2007, AZ supplied plug valves to a mineral sands operation in South Africa, where they were used to control sand slurry being pumped from the pit to the plant. The AZ valves delivered excellent performance, and exceeded the client expectations. Now, the initial mine has reached the end of its life, and a new deposit is being brought into production. AZ has supplied the mining company with new valves ranging in size from 50mm to 500mm nominal bore for the sand slurry application. The plug valves comply with an ANSI 300 - 600 pressure rating to a maximum of 100 bar. As the valves will be used in a corrosive coastal conditions, the exterior of the plug was covered in a special heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant coating.

All AZ plug valves are fitted with a PTFE sleeve. This allows AZ's valves to operate in the harsh sand slurry environment without failures. An important factor in the reliability of these valves is the absence of internal cavities, which eliminates damage to moving parts. The absence of cavities in the design of the plug valve also ensures a smooth slurry flow. As the PTFE sleeve is self-lubricating, the plug will not seize, even after not being used for extended periods. In these instances, the valve can be operated without risk of damage. AZ's plug valves' design complies with internationally accepted standards, and the factory is ISO 9001 compliant. The castings for the new valves were manufactured by the South African foundry, Steloy Castings. This company has been producing castings for AZ for many

years, and has the ability to meet AZ's quality standards. For users of sleeved plug valves in South Africa, AZ offers the advantage of local manufacture and support. This is backed up by a substantial inventory of spare parts. "In line with South Africa's designated valve policy, at AZ-Armaturen, we are proud that these plug valves are almost 100% locally manufactured," explains AZ-Armaturen General Manager Erich Ermel. The company recently celebrated 30 years of doing business in South Enquiry no: 41 Africa.

Solving pump problems

ertical turbine booster pumps are commonly used to maintain adequate water pressure in high rise buildings. When the equipment at a large American metropolitan hospital repeatedly failed, Wisconsin-based Municipal Well & Pump responded with a state-of -the-art design that included Vesconite bearings. The hospital was investing considerable labour hours repairing the equipment. “Because of how the system was set up, the pumps would run at full speed with little to no flow, often at dead head,” said Marty Van Ells, Municipal Well & Pump sales and project manager. “They were just eating up the bronze bushings.” The company engineered a solution with standardised equipment and variable frequency drives. It installed four skids with several new Vesconiteequipped pumps and retrofitted 10

existing units with the polymer. The bearing material was specifically chosen to ensure reliability and prolong service life. Hospital staff notice that the system runs far quieter. “We’ve gotten good results with

Vesconite,” continued Van Ells. His company replaced bronze bushings in a well pump with Vesconite and has had no issues in its seven years of service. Low friction, abrasion-resistant Vesconite doesn’t swell in water like nylon. It offers up to ten times the useful life of bronze. Unlike metal bearings, that can contain lead, the internally-lubricated polymer doesn’t need to be greased. It’s a safer solution for use in potable water supplies and is approved for cold and hot up to 65ºC. Vesco Plastics manufactures a wide range of easily machined industrial polymers. can perform simple open/close movements and, depending on the version, also carry out control tasks. The GEMÜ 9428 and GEMÜ 9468 series have already been established for some time now and boast a robust and reliable design. The special feature of these actuators, in addition to a solid and low-wear design, is the way in which power is transmitted to the shaft of the respective valve. More specifically, this means that the torque in the end positions with a constant motor load increases and the speed at a constant motor speed decreases simultaneously. This special design feature brings the nominal torque of the actuator into line with the closing characteristic curve of a quarter turn valve. This not only achieves a constant load on the electric motor being used by avoiding peak loads, it also improves controllability. The new version of the GEMÜ 9428 actuator with a nominal torque of 55 Nm completes the two series. With this extension to the portfolio, the company now offers a comprehensive product range with nominal torques from 6 Nm up to 400 Nm. Depending on the version, travel times of between 4 and 29 seconds can be implemented. The actuators feature an optical position indicator as standard, as well as a manual override. Enquiry no: 43

An example of where new technology can play a role in reducing costs for an operation is the Warman MCR range of mill circuit pumps, which offers improved mill discharge performance. These pumps easily manage the large size particles in dense abrasive slurries and are suitable for applications ranging from the most difficult mill discharge to water flushed crushing. Fitted with R55 rubber liners, the wear life of this pump has been significantly enhanced and operating costs have consequently been lowered. The range is popular within the gold and copper sectors, and in mineral sands applications. The recent expansion of the Warman WBH range of pumps gives customer access to an improvement in wear life, with a subsequent reduction in maintenance and operating costs. Enquiry no: 45

Variable pump for lower-power range mobile equipment

I

n introducing an axial piston variable pump for hydraulic systems in the new size 18, Bosch Rexroth has narrowed the price gap to identically-sized gear pumps. Manufacturers of mobile equipment in the agricultural and construction sectors can now implement the efficiencyenhancing technology on tractors and vehicles of 37 kW and higher, and auxiliary drives on larger vehicles. In enabling demand-controlled power generation for lower-power range agricultural and construction mobile equipment, manufacturers and operators can improve machine efficiency by up to 16 percent, while simultaneously lowering exhaust emissions. With the use of variable pumps previously restricted to machines in the upper power ranges, lower-powered machines were designed with energy-intensive open-centre systems using fixed pumps. The A1VO offers a range of available control types – pressure control, load-sensing control and electronic control – providing an economically-attractive alternative for many hydraulic systems that previously used fixed pumps. Hydraulic systems with

demand-controlled power generation supplied by variable pumps are central to a more economical mechanical operation. The A1VO is fitted with an integrated loadsensing controller to assume demand-controlled power generation, increasing the efficiency of implement hydraulics and improving the responsiveness of load handling. Comprehensive simulations using OEM engine map data of a commercially-available 66 kW diesel motor demonstrated that the A1VO reduces energy savings by between 10 and 16 percent. On a projected tractor life of 6 000 hours and assuming a typical load cycle distribution, the unit was calculated to produce savings of around 10 000 litres of diesel. The variable pump achieves the greatest fuel savings in partial-load operations, such as holding the plough during transportation or working with the front loader. The A1VO pump comes in two sizes, 18 and 35 cm³, both of which are housed in a compact, flexible and reliable enclosure that allows a simple installation into existing hydraulic circuits without altering the underlying specificaEnquiry no: 46 tions.

Energy from anaerobic waste water treatment facility V eolia Water Technologies South Africa has been awarded the contract to design, build and operate South Africa’s first Biobulk Waste Water Treatment facility. The plant, owned by Distell in Stellenbosch, will be ready for commissioning in March 2016. On commissioning, a 10-year BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) agreement comes into force. Distell (Pty) Ltd has three operational sites in the Stellenbosch area. Over the last four years, Distell has developed their Green Plan to install a common anaerobic water treatment facility that will lower the COD (chemical oxygen demand) load in the outfall to the Municipality, harvest the energy in the wastewater and lower the overall cost of effluent treatment. The selected Veolia Biobulk CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor) technology is a green technology and is a robust and proven process that treats industrial effluents with significant amounts of suspended solids. It is the anaerobic equivalent to the conventional activated sludge digestion system. Following an anaerobic suspended

bacteria treatment process, the majority of the soluble and solid organic content, measured in COD, is converted into biogas. The Biobulk can be operated as a once-through system or, alternately, biomass can be returned after a clarification stage. The key to the Biobulk design is the manner in which the reactor vessel is mixed and the design of the degassing stage prior to clarification. The biogas is a source of renewable energy and converted into steam for the Distell site. “The Biobulk system,” says Jaco Oosthuizen, Technical Manager:

Industrial, Veolia Water Technologies, South Africa, “represents a long term capital savings investment." "It brings with it an operating cost saving whereby solids in the effluent need not be removed; they can be converted to biogas (energy) in the reactor.” The effluent in this plant will be treated by the Biothane Biobulk Anaerobic Digester, the heart of the plant. Ancillary equipment includes storage buffer tanks, clarifiers, the centrifuge, boiler and biogas flare. First, the digester reduces the effluent COD content by 94.1%. Next, a clarifier removes suspended solids, in turn followed by Veolia Hydrotech drum filtering for tertiary treatment. This ensures the total suspended solid (TSS) concentration is less than 150 mg/l. Veolia is mandated to deliver the specified quality of water; carry out ongoing maintenance; and ensure the plant’s operating performance is in accordance with set objectives. For this project, Veolia will treat 1 000 m³ of effluent per day with an organic load of 8.6 tons COD per day. Enquiry no: 47

MOTORS, DRIVES & TRANSMISSION

Stepping up a gear W hen Renault was developing its new generation K9 engine to meet the now obligatory Euro6 regulations, it also needed to develop new processes in different areas of its Valladolid plant in Spain that supported its SPR and lean manufacturing principles. According to Johan Bester, Head of Sales at SMC Pneumatics South Africa, the K9 produces fewer than 80mg/km of nitrogen oxides, which is a requirement of Euro6. It features steel pistons that generate less friction and delivers 3 percent lower fuel consumption. The particular challenges facing Renault’s Production System (SPR) was how to maximise efficiency and output while optimising the available space and keeping maintenance as simple as possible. With ambitious targets to reduce overall costs of the new engine and increase produc-

tion, whilst maintaining quality, Renault needed an experienced and trusted components supplier. SMC with its LEF actuators met the requirement to support the screw part of the process. With the highest repeat action, the screwing of components was a key focus for Renault in its efforts to improve productivity in an efficient way. According to Bester, the SMC´s electric actuators have provided Renault with the high flexibility required for the development of new products, and at a very competitive price. Renault also believes the continuous collaboration with SMC has been key to the integration of the electric actuators and has reinforced the image of the company as a components supplier for the automotive industry. Being Japanese owned, SMC shares Renault’s SPR principle through the kaizen

(continuous improvement) philosophy and collectively both teams are always striving to enhance the manufacturing process, so that it’s as lean and efficient as possible. The project met the customer’s key objective of reducing production time by 50 percent and minimising maintenance time and cost. A key part of Renault’s production process is the use of robotic technology. However, they utilise valuable space and are costly, and complicated to programme and maintain. So, it was Renault’s ambition to replace these, where possible, with more efficient and effective alternative solutions. As a result, SMC’s LEF actuators have been installed as preferred alternative to a bulky

robot. This new concept has the ability to cover eight different positions whilst withstanding heavy loads up to 15 kilos during the assembly of each new engine. They provide resistance to the momentum generated during the screwing and high torqueing process, therefore, offering quality precision. Motor controllers for SMC’s electric actuators are easy to programme and deliver production efficiencies across all key areas. Since installing the electric actuators, Renault has significantly reduced the screw cycle from 16 seconds to nine seconds. The overall time of the operation was reduced by six seconds to just 24 seconds. The company has also halved its production area to Enquiry no: 48 just 4m².

osch Rexroth’s Hydrotrac GFT 8000 gearbox enables an approximate 10% increase in drive train performance for larger mobile working machines. Launched earlier this year and now available from Hytec, a Hytec Group Company, these transmission units are based on a modular design. Ideal for use in harsh, rugged environments including African mining operations, they have two- and three-stage combined planetary gearing with axial piston motors to match the needs of heavy and bulky mobile working machines such as trucks and excavators. An optional internal brake reduces the installation space needed, but adheres to the safety specifications for worldwide roadworthiness certification. The mechanical planetary drives in these transmission units transfer the torque from the hydrostatic drive to the wheels or tracks. Bosch Rexroth uses the newest versions of variable axial piston motors or fixed-displacement axial piston motors, which operate in either an open or closed circuit. HE Coega Development Corporation (CDC), announced that development and investment continues to boom. In the 2014/2015 financial year and with the inclusion of the 2015/2016 financial year first quarter, new infrastructure development projects with a value of R809-million were completed in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (Coega IDZ). The combined area of investor expansions, new facilities and special infrastructure projects in the IDZ, such as the laydown area for abnormal cargo near the deep-water port of Ngqura, had a footprint 164 007 m². Logistics, agro-processing, chemical and energy sectors have been the main growth drivers over the last 18 months, said CDC Head of Marketing and Communication, Dr Ayanda Vilakazi. “Newly completed infrastructure development projects have included the Afrox and Air Products plants, with a combined value of R600 million, and several projects for logistics companies including UTI, Vector Logistics and ID Logistics, with a pooled value of R200 million. The laydown area’s project value was R9 million,” he said. Signed investor lease agreements finalised towards the end of CDC’s 2014/2015 financial year (FY) will introduce new industrial and commercial activity on 80 666 m² of land in the Coega IDZ in the 2015/16 FY, and the value of these came in at R214-million.

During this period, CDC also received 12 letters of intent from new investors for industrial and commercial activity spread over 97 728 m² with an investment value of R1,2 billion, which it is busy progressing to new signings. “To put these figures into perspective, the new signed lease agreements and new investor pipeline will introduce industrial activity over an area of 177 000 m² or 24 rugby fields,” said Dr Vilakazi. The value of commercial and industrial assets currently under construction in the Coega IDZ is R3,6 billion and these are taking place on an area of 169 170m². The Dedisa Peaking Power Plant (pictured) - valued at R3,5 billion – has a 150 000 m² footprint, while the remaining 19 170 m² are

projects in the IDZ logistics and agro-processing zones. These include the 4 038m² warehouse expansions of Digistics in the logistics zone valued at R32 million, the 7 332 m² expansion of Coega Dairy valued at R24 million, and the 6 000m² multi-user facility in the agro-processing zone valued at R86 million, which offers investors smaller units of between 350 m² and 1 500 m² under one roof with communal infrastructure. Dr Vilakazi said the industrial construction boom is essentially amongst others the result

of the newly announced Special Economic Zone (SEZ) incentives, which are drawing foreign and domestic direct investments to Port Enquiry no: 51 Elizabeth’s IDZ.

he gazetting of South Africa’s first bioregional plan – for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) in the Eastern Cape – is a milestone on the road towards the more sustainable development of SA towns and cities, according to SRK Consulting (SA) principal environmental scientist Warrick Stewart. “This plan sets a notable benchmark, and it is certainly fitting that it has been achieved by a municipality with such rich biological diversity – where five of SA’s nine biomes converge,” said Stewart. “The area boasts the Fynbos, Albany Thicket, Forest, Nama Karoo and Grassland biomes – a level of diversity that is globally unparalleled for a city.” He emphasised the social and economic value of biodiversity, such as attenuating floods, providing clean water of a drinking quality standard, facilitating the pollination of important agricultural crops to support food security, and providing primary sources of food like fish from the wild. “Ecosystems provide a range of valuable services that we take for granted because we often don’t pay in full for the services they provide,” he said. “When inappropriately located, development results in the loss of important ecosystems and communities often end up paying for the long-term costs of losing these important ecological assets. Good planning means retaining our priority ecological assets when we develop our new

ASTERN Cape consumers look to be clawing their way back from the global economic meltdown of 2008/2009 with household income, consumer spending and saving all showing significant increases. These are the findings of the latest Consumer Spending in the Eastern Cape research report from the Economic Planning Directorate of the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT). The report shows that the province’s disposable income (which is household income less taxes) in 2013 was R136 billion, of which consumers spent R133 billion and saved more than R3 billion. This is some 300% more than the savings of 2003, and almost 87% more than the slump in 2008 where savings were only R485 million, and R791 million in 2009. Household incomes have also been going up, and reached R150 billion in 2013, an increase of about R60 billion over 10 years. One of the biggest surprises is that the district showing the greatest household income and consumption figures is not one of the two major metropolitans of Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City, but the historically disadvantaged OR Tambo district municipality based in Mthatha. In 2013, consumption expenditure in OR Tambo reached R45 billion and in Amathole, which statistic information for 2013 includes the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, it was R32 billion. Nelson Mandela Bay Metro was third with R26 billion. The change in OR Tambo is the most dramatic. Ten years previously in 2003, OR Tambo households spent only R14.7 billion, showing a massive 67% increase over the decade. However, OR Tambo district still relies most heavily on unearned income in the province at 45%. Unearned income is mainly income from state aid compared with income from remuneration. Nelson Mandela Bay metro and Cacadu district show the highest proportion of remuneration in household income at 61%. For the province as a whole, 57% of total income in 2013 came from remuneration while 43% was made up of unearned income which shows the high level at which Eastern Cape households still rely on state support. Worryingly, this amount has increased by 8% over the last 10 years, up from 35%. Enquiry no: 57

settlements and roll out associated services. If we undermine ecosystem services like flood attenuation, for instance, we will have to pay more to install and maintain expensive flood attenuation infrastructure.” The bioregional plan was gazetted on 30 March 2015 and now provides clear priorities and guidelines for all decisions that impact on

biodiversity, including land-use planning, environmental assessment and authorisations, and natural resource management in the municipal area. SRK Consulting produced the Conservation Assessment and Plan for the NMBM in 2010, which underpins the gazetted document, and also assisted with the gazetting process. Stewart said that bioregional plans assist local municipalities in spatially identifying priority sensitive areas. This information is crucial to enabling municipalities to effectively develop their Spatial Development Frameworks, as per the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA) 16 of 2013. “One of the most exciting and challenging achievements of the conservation plan was to minimise the potential conflict between biodiversity and other forms of land-use,” said Stewart. “This involved a lengthy process of engaging a range of players from town planners and property developers to municipal service departments, to understand their needs and to reconcile conflicts.” He said the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEM: BA) 10 of 2004 requires all government bodies – including municipalities – through the gazetting of the Bioregional Plan to take biodiversity into account when planning and implementing service delivery. Gearing up for multi-billion infrastructure projects

A

s Government gears up to spend R813 billion on infrastructure development over the next three years the Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa (Aspasa) is cautioning role players to begin consulting with building material suppliers in order to ensure availability and quality. According to Aspasa director, Nico Pienaar (pictured), planning needs to be done in conjunction with all role players so that materials such as sand and aggregates are available where required. Depending on the grade and type of aggregates required materials may need to be sourced from different areas which might complicate or drive the prices of projects up. “Sand and aggregates in concrete, bitumen or as bedding material are the building blocks of almost all our

EC Industrial & Business News infrastructure from roads to railways, building and pipelines. Yet few people realise how different the requirement is for each and every application. “Different infrastructure requires different characteristics and properties of these materials and as a result it is prudent to find out where the nearest sources are, what reserves are available, what transport implications exist and to secure supply and pricing at a predetermined rate. “Alternatively, the material that is eventually sourced may either need to be transported over long distances in order to ensure it is to the correct specification and quality. Alternatively contractors may be tempted to use unsuitable material from make-shift excavations or may source materials from illegal suppliers who may be practicing unsustainable quarrying to the detriment of its workers, surrounding communities, as well as the environment." “Last minute planning has been responsible for badly thought-out borrow pits along our roads and railways in the past and these are still visible along our freeways where they have been left to scar the landscape for-

ever. Borrow pits also jeopardise the sustainable employment of those in the quarrying industry as the borrow pits take away from surrounding quarries and make them less viable in the short term. In tough economic times this may be all that is required to close down marginal local quarries,” says Pienaar. Pienaar explains that by working with all the relevant industries plans can be made in each industry to bolster supply to meet demands. Where local supplies may be an issue the industry may even be able to work together to stockpile materials or source new and sustainable sources closer to where it is required. This will also prevent collusion as all possible suppliers can be identified and terms, conditions and pricing obtained beforehand to ensure fairness. “We want to ensure that Government’s project are a success and benefit the population. In addition we want to ensure that our industry is ready and also stands to benefits from Governments bold plans,” Pienaar concludes. Enquiry no: 58

trong, stackable and mobile, the potential uses for out-ofservice shipping containers are nearly unlimited—and also not well known. Maersk Line Container Sales, a new start-up company within Maersk Line, is betting on customers’ imagination, and big growth. Brad Berman bought his first used shipping container in June 2014. It was dented and scratched, the paint was falling off and there were bits of rust scattered over the surface but its looks meant nothing to him. The

Cape Town native and real estate developer was looking at the start of his new business. Today, Berman is the founder of Berman-Kalil Housing Concepts, a company utilising old shipping containers to build a variety of structures but primarily inexpensive high-quality sustainable housing. Berman is one of many new customers for Maersk Line Container Sales, a new business within Maersk Line established in August 2014 to better target the market for used shipping containers. Previously, third parties sold Maersk Line’s used containers on the shipping line’s behalf, managing the customer relationships and taking a large chunk of the profit in exchange. Now that Maersk Line has direct control of the business, the opportunities and challenges are lining up. The business starts from a strong position: Maersk Line has roughly 2.5 million containers in circulation globally and the world’s largest vessel network to distribute them where they are needed. As of

January 2015, approximately 80,000 containers were available for sale through Maersk Line Container Sales. All of them have fulfilled 15-18 years of service—Maersk Line’s cut-off for carrying cargo—or are too damaged to be worth repairing and put back into service. “We are not selling beautiful, shiny containers. “What we are selling is at best a plain vanilla container. It is still as strong as it ever was and with basic care it will last for decades, but it often needs some repair which is why we’re focusing mainly on those markets where they can be repaired for lower cost,” says Sorensen. The centre is more than 90% let and on track for opening in November this year, just in time for the festive season. The 22,260sqm three-level shopping centre, developed for Dipula by Isibonelo Property Services and Eris Property Group, is set to formalise the area’s currently dispersed retail offering into a one-stop modern centre located in the heart of the lively East London CBD. The development is located at the main transport hub of East London, intended to provide a convenient shopping experience for the

customer. In partnership with the city, improvements will be made to the roads around the centre, enhancing the CBD even further. “The City has fully endorsed the project and we have been fortunate to have had them on

board as a partner. The piece of land on which the centre is situated has being leased from the City on a long term lease,” Petersen says. “In addition to this, various initiatives are being considered, paying special attention to hawkers, taxi owners and taxi associations,” notes Petersen. “The taxis are paramount to the success of the centre as they will bring most commuters from various parts of East London including numerous surrounding towns as far away as the former Transkei.” Anchor tenants include Game and Shoprite. Over three quarters of the tenant mix so far is made up of national retailers, and these retailers now have a space that would otherwise not be appropriate in the densely traded CBD. “Gillwell is indeed unique in that it integrates public transport and retail in a manner never before seen in East London,” he says. The centre is also located within walking distance from all key government departments, which serve the local metropolitan area as well as the region. It is also nearby the local train station, buses, harbour and the world renowned Mercedes Benz factory – the largest employer in East London. Enquiry no: 61

Local heavy fuel oil depot upgrade

E

nergas Technologies has supplied a packaged heating system for a local oil storage facility upgrade. Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) is stored in large tanks and has a high viscosity at ambient temperature. Before loading into tanker trucks, the HFO needs to be heated in order to reduce the viscosity. Laetitia Botha, Product Engineer for Energas Technologies, notes, “In order to address this need, we have supplied an HTT packaged heating system, which will be used to heat up this heavy fuel oil from 20˚C to 80˚C. The system comprises a gas-fired oil heater and thermal oil circulation system as well as a control system and heat exchangers.” She adds, “The packaged unit is fully automated and fitted with local control systems, process control and instrumentation equipment. The control system is interfaced with the local RTU PLC, which means that making changes on the heater units remotely is a possibility.” The modern three-pass design of the heating system’s burner brings state-of-theart heater technology to the project. Botha explains how the system works: “The heat transfer medium flows through two concentric coiled tubes in the heater that are connected in series and the hot flue gases are guided by means of defined annular gaps in the counterflow. In contrast with the conventional type of construction, the flue gases are recirculated twice inside the apparatus; in the second and third passes, their energy is delivered to the transfer medium by means of convection.” Apart from the extremely compact design of the package, the outstanding advantage of the HTT principle is that it dispenses with a fireclay-lined furnace. This permits heat storage masses to be reduced to a minimum, a particularly impressive breakthrough which eliminates the thermal overloading of the heat transfer medium that was previously unavoidable in the event of an unscheduled shutdown, and an important step towards maintenance-free heaters. The system is operated either with natural gas or with LPG. The complete heat transfer facility was

installed outdoors, so all the components had to be weather resistant and winterised. HTT’s service team from Germany will commission the heater system on site and train the personnel. The project began in October 2014 and is set to be completed on time by September 2015. HTT has been manufacturing thermal oil heating systems since 1967 and to date over 11000 units have

been delivered worldwide, ranging from small lab arrangements right up to highly complex reactor temperature control equipment. Enquiry no: 62

n a drive to use less energy and reduce costs, various industries are moving to LEDbased lighting and selecting lighting products that have a longer lifespan and are less prone to damage. LED lighting uses 60%-90% less energy than incandescent lighting and is more durable. Although LED products are more expensive, they will last about a hundred times longer than an equivalent halogen light. “As one of the most energy-efficient light bulbs on the market, LED is the most environmentally friendly because it has a lower carbon footprint, and when discarded, does not leach poisonous mercury into the ground,” said Leonard Chester, product manager Vehicle Accessories, Torre Automotive, the sole VisionX distributor. Although energy efficient, CFLs contain mercury, a toxin associated with birth defects, brain damage and other disorders. That is why CFLs must be safely discarded. LEDs on the other hand contain no mercury or hazardous materials. In addition, LEDs last 35 to 50 times longer than incandescent lighting and about 4 to 10 times longer than fluorescent Enquiry no: 63 lighting.

Optimum environmental protection and a positive CO² balance

eveloped for use in a wide range of applications and conditions where environmental impacts are a key consideration, Cat Bio HYDO Advanced provides superior performance across a wide temperature range. A green solution, Cat Bio HYDO Advanced is a synthetic ester based hydraulic fluid with >90% bio-based content (per ASTM D6866

test method). Unlike fossil carbon, bio-based carbons are derived from renewable sources: fluid biodegradability to OECD 301B is estimated at around 80% after 28 days. Comparable to premium mineral-based hydraulic oils, Cat Bio HYDO Advanced has been awarded a number of eco-labels, including the EU Flower. (The EU Flower is the only eco-label that covers all aspects of sustainability, including product performance, toxicology, pollution mitigation, and the utilisation of renewable resources.) The product is also listed in the US Department of Agriculture’s BioPreferred programme Key product features include superior, consistent wear protection throughout the entire temperature range from -30°C to 45°C, excellent corrosion resistance, and fast air release.

Good foam control and fast air release are important properties of any hydraulic fluid. Air trapped in hydraulic oil reduces system response and causes “sponginess” at the controls. Trapped air also accelerates oil degradation. “Excessive air and foam can lead to cavitation (collapsing air bubbles) and damage to hydraulic components,” comments Barloworld Equipment group product specialist, Reuben Phasha. (Barloworld Equipment is the Cat dealer for southern Africa.) Cat Bio HYDO Advanced releases air very quickly and special additives keep the hydraulic fluid clear of foam, even when it becomes contaminated with engine oil. Enquiry no: 64

Reaching out

B

uilding on a market share of over 50% in the local empty container handler market, Southern African Hyster dealer Barloworld Handling has geared itself to achieve similar growth with its Hyster reach stackers. Hyster big trucks are known for being tough and reliable in arduous applications and providing a low total cost of ownership in a range of industries. “This is particularly important for high-value assets, required to operate in intense 24/7 operations,” says Gerhard van Niekerk, big truck sales manager at Barloworld Handling. The Hyster reach stacker series benefits from Hyster’s 80 years of experience designing and building forklift trucks and 60 years of experience manufacturing big trucks with lifting capacities up to 52 tons. Designed for all-round efficiency, Hyster reach stackers offer a unique blend of productivity, reliable components, fuel economy and outstanding driver comfort, says Van Niekerk. Hyster reach stackers have a proven track record in South Africa. They are in use at container yards, shipping companies running their own container operations, transport companies using reach stackers to reduce the turnaround time of trucks, and in the handling of abnormal-size loads such as boilers, tanks and earthmoving equipment components. “Acquisition of a reach stacker is the biggest single capital outlay many of these companies make. It is therefore doubly important to ensure that a reach stacker is what’s required for your application and that the model you acquire, will meet both your short-term needs and longterm requirements,” says Van Niekerk. Barloworld Handling undertakes site-application surveys before recommending any equipment. “For example, if no second-row stacking is required, we would advise the customer to acquire a top handler instead of a reach stacker.” “If a reach stacker is unable to stack your heaviest container on site in the second row, you have probably bought an underspecified machine,” says Van Niekerk. “While machine tonnage may be specified at 45 tons, this may have no bearing on second-row stacking Enquiry no: 65 capabilities.”

New hook latch trigger safety feature A

s a first in South Africa, Konecranes is introducing an important new safety feature called the Hook Latch Trigger which allows for the crane operator to have both hands free to handle the load attachment when inserting or removing it from the hook. It eliminates the risk of finger, hand or back injuries when a lifting device is lifted inside the hook. Konecranes is installing the triggers now as a standard feature in all Smarton and Uniton trolley/cranes as well as most CXT hoists. The triggers, coated in distinctive red rubber paint, can also be retrofitted to older cranes. They are suitable for both single hooks and Ramshorn hooks. “The triggers are a significant added safety feature and a huge improvement on the sometimes troublesome standard safety catches”, said John MacDonald, Service, Sales and Marketing director of Konecranes Southern Africa. “The triggers are unique to Konecranes and were developed from a winning entry in a Konecranes ‘idea competition’ in 2011. Since then the product design has been improved upon from the original idea in order to minimize dimension effects, secure operation and to fit a new feature to multiple different hook Enquiry no: 66 forging sizes.

Smaller customised mobile substations

M

obile substation technology has been used in South America for many years and WEG Brazil has an established reputation for the supply of this technology with an extensive footprint of successful installations. Zest Energy was responsible for bringing this technology to the African continent and since its first units were supplied to Eskom in South Africa, the company has expanded its solutions to include a wide range of mobile substations and mobile switching stations. Coenraad Vrey, managing director of Zest Energy, says that the first mobile units engineered by the company in South Africa were mobile diesel generators and the company used this experience, together with the application of WEG’s advanced technology, to engineer a mobile substation solution suitable for the harsh and demanding African conditions. “What is particularly significant is

that, with this mobile substation technology, it is possible to move these units to wherever they are required. This provides optimum flexibility, not just to power utilities, but also to other operations such as mines, quarries and rural areas,” he adds. Zest Energy leveraged WEG’s 20 years of experience in engineering transformers to develop a transformer that has significant weight reduction. “This re-engineering was necessary

to minimise both the weight and the physical size of the transformers. One way that we were able to achieve this requirement was by employing ODAF (oil direct air force) cooling,” says Vrey. He explains that an intimate understanding and knowledge of various applications means that the company is able to meet very specific requirements. Enquiry no: 67

First female calibrator in Africa

General Motors South Africa (GMSA) employee soared to the top of her field recently when she became the first certified female calibrator on the African Continent. Sue-Ann Lewack (39) is now leading the way in the motor manufacturing industry, an industry which is still largely dominated by men. Lewack placed a further feather in her cap by completing her certification in the shortest possible time of seven months. The certification normally takes a year and a half to complete and is one of the most sought after qualifications for employees in the automotive sector. Set on paving the way for other female employees in her field, a humble but excited Lewack said she is proud of her accomplishment, although the magnitude of her achievement has not yet sunken in.
