urban based flexible packaging specialist, Afripack, has officially joined the global network of Constantia Flexibles, the European based, and world’s fourth largest flexible packaging and labels company. The acquisition was successfully completed at the beginning of December, after receiving approval from the relevant anti-trust authorities. The finalization of the acquisition was speedily followed by an “on board” event at the Pinetown plant, planned to welcome the 800 Durbanbased employees of Afripack to the Constantia Flexibles family and begin to integrate them into the Constantia Flexibles ethos of “People, Passion, Packaging”. “According to CEO Alexander Baumgartner, who was present at the event “We want to integrate Afripack into our group as quickly as possible. This is not just operational matters but also branding, corporate values, as well as health and safety standards.” Constantia Flexibles is a recog-

The company currently boasts close to 50 plants in over 20 countries and employs close to 10 000 people in its operations. Annual sales were close to €2 billion in 2014. Afripack is a truly local company,

boasting a total of 6 plants. Three of these are in Durban, one near Johannesburg, one in Kenya and one in Mauritius and the company employs a total of 1 150 employees. Annual sales are in the range of R1.5 billion rand. “We are entering a market with

tremendous potential and both companies will strengthen our ties to our blue-chip, multinational customer base,” said Friedrich Humer, Executive Vice President Food Emerging Markets of Constantia Flexibles. “We look forward to joining forces with Afripack’s dedicated workforce and strengthening our footprint in Africa.” “Why did we buy Afripack? Quite simple – Africa is a growth market of the future and Afripack offers the perfect platform to expand in the Sub-Saharan region. We were also very impressed by the strong entrepreneurial management team.” According to Hummer, consumption of flexible packaging products in Africa is forecast to continue to grow at a higher rate compared to Europe. Strong growth in flexible packaging is supported by recent and expected future investments by multinationals, a growing middle class, expansion of organized retailing and urbanization. In addition, Africa has a large and young population, where more than 40% of the population is under 14.

and job creation. Currently, access to finance and skills have been identified as the primary constraints for many existing and emerging black industrialists. Government has indicated that more initiatives and incentives need to be put in place to help develop and create black industrialists in the country,” adds Marlie. The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) is set to launch the BIP programme in early 2016, as well as provide more details on the programme. With the recent introduction of

the new Broad-Based Economic Empowerment codes, Government intends to adopt a focused approach to support black industrialists in a bid to enhance South Africa’s industrialisation efforts. On 4 November 2015 the South African Government Cabinet approved the BIP programme which is a key component of the dti’s Industrial Policy Action Plan. The BIP programme will form stakeholder relationships with multi-corporations, commercial banks, Development Finance Institutions and State-owned enterprises - all

Update on TNPA’s 100% locally manufactured workboat

S

ignificant progress has been made on local construction of the INYOSI workboat that will support Transnet National Ports Authority’s new R889 million ILEMBE trailing suction hopper dredger when she gets to work dredging South Africa’s ports early next year. Carl Gabriel, head of TNPA’s Dredging Services Division, said: “The combination workboat/hydrographic survey boat is being built by Nautic Africa in Cape Town, as part of the supplier development programme for the ILEMBE dredger contract which was awarded to Royal IHC in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.” During November Nautic Africa celebrated a milestone with the relocation of the INYOSI’s hull from a separate site to the company’s premises to enable the wheelhouse to be attached.

The hull was built elsewhere to avoid contamination between its steel structure and the aluminium of the wheelhouse constructed at Nautic Africa’s premises. Nautic Africa sourced the aluminium for the wheelhouse from a supplier in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The engine, which was also 100% locally manufactured, was supplied by Caterpillar Marine Power. TNPA has a dredging fleet replacement programme underway which is in excess of R2 billion. This programme is an integral part of Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy – now in its third year - which aims to enable the effective, efficient and economic functioning of an integrated port system with the infrastructure and capacity to promote economic growth and contribute to job creation. A team of sixty people has been involved in

Growing flexible packaging It has 15% of the global population, but close to a quarter of the world’s under14s. Between now and 2050, the population of Africa’s cities is expected to grow by almost 900 million people. The company felt this was the perfect move to be in the ‘right place at the right time’ to capitalize on this potential. Multinational customer production presence in South Africa is also growing. Recent public announcements of planned investments in South Africa by multinational customers of Constantia Flexibles, including Unilever, Nestle, and P&G amount to several hundred million dollars. Afripack has strong market position with key accounts like Unilever, Mondelez, Coca Cola, as well as local champions such as Tiger. ‘In short, Constantia Flexibles believe strongly in the future of Africa as a growing market for flexible packaging, presenting great opportunity for growth.“ He concluded. The existing management team of Arnold Vermaak and James Hynd will remain in the business, both as shareholders and in their current positions. Economic benefit of nuclear power to Durban

N

uclear Africa CEO and Nuclear Physicist, Dr Kelvin Kemm addressed business leaders at the Durban Chamber of Commerce on the positive impact that nuclear technology and power will play in South Africa’s economy and power generation capability. Kemm believes that South African companies are already well positioned to benefit from the nuclear power programme and will directly benefit from the government’s target of at least 50% of the content being produced and procured locally. This in turn will result in increased job opportunities and develop a legacy of scientific development within our schools and universities according to Kemm. “South African companies are already producing goods and services that are of a world-class standard, and should be ready to take part in this massive programme,” he says. Regarding power production and

the benefits that accrue from nuclear power, Kemm states that “A piece of uranium the size of an egg contains enough nuclear energy to supply the electricity needs for the entire lifetime of one person. This is millions of times more energy than is contained in a similar size lump of coal, or in a cupful of petrol.” “South Africa is already a nuclear powered country,” states Kemm. People often forget about the critical role that the Koeberg Power Station in Cape Town plays, supplying the Western Cape with nearly 50% of its power. “If Koeberg were a coal-fired plant, it would use six train loads of coal per day, but in fact it uses only one truck load of nuclear fuel per year." Speaking on local capability Kemm contends that South Africa has the skills required with nuclear professionals as competent as anywhere else in the world. He believes that an investment

in a nuclear power plant will create greater opportunities for South Africans to study nuclear sciences, developing a legacy of advanced scientific development in schools across the country. Regarding the cost of the programme, Kemm doesn’t believe the trillion Rand figures being used are correct and contends that an amount of R500 to R650 billion is more realistic. The cost of power production is also important to consider. While there is a large initial capital outlay, nuclear power plants such as Koeberg, produce electricity which is cheaper than electricity produced by the large coal-fired plants and considerably cheaper than wind or solar generated electricity. Nuclear power plants of the future will also produce electricity cheaper than coal-fired electricity, with none of the emissions and therefore no carbon footprint. Kemm underlines

that this was an original design criterion. “No scientist or engineer would ever have started designing a nuclear power plant without having the final selling price of the electricity defined as an integrated element of what one calls the design envelope,” adds Kemm. “Nuclear power for a country like South Africa will, and must, play a critical role in the country’s economic and social development.

The building and development of nuclear power plants in South Africa will not only secure South Africa’s energy future but generate thousands of jobs, develop a highly specialised technical skill set and stimulate further interest in the sciences. Furthermore, it will generate a legacy of employment, skills development and science focused education; something South Africa desperately needs,” he concludes.

Becoming global contact centre destination

T

he Contact Centre and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industries in Durban continue to grow at speed, creating local job opportunities by attracting local and international investors. The city of Durban can rightfully claim its position as one of the leading BPO locations in South Africa. This is according to Johann Kunz, Managing Director of WNS South Africa, the local arm of global business process outsourcing firm, WNS. “With its skilled talent pool, first-rate infrastructure and central location,

Durban also has the potential to be a leader in the international contact centre industry,” he adds. Having the second largest business and industrial base in the country, WNS identified Durban as a strategically suitable location to open its sixth South African delivery centre, located in the River Horse Valley Business Estate. “We envision our new Durban delivery centre to be a catalyst for job creation, skills development and economic growth within previously disadvantaged areas of the region.

We have already created 400 jobs after opening our doors and aim to increase this to over 1000 new job opportunities in the next 12 months,” says Kunz. Kunz adds that Durban has carved out its own speciality within the local contact centre industry; namely, delivering outbound and IT interactions. Tebogo Molapisane, CEO of South African BPO industry body, BPESA, says that after more than a decade in operation, the South African BPO industry is maturing to offer a range of business process solutions. “The industry has also been identified by government as a priority sector and key contributor to economic growth,” he adds. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) involves contracting a third party provider to take over the operation of a particular company’s business functions with the aim of being more efficient. These functions, which include customer interaction services, among other processes, are often delivered from another country. “The BPO/Contact Centre industry currently accounts for over 215 000 jobs across the country, with approximately 26 500 of those servicing international markets. This figure is expected to grow significantly over the next few years,” says Molapisane. Enquiry no: 7 .

Port authority completes Rollout of ‘smartPORTS’

ll eight commercial ports across South Africa’s coastline are now using Transnet National Ports Authority’s new R79 million web-based Integrated Port Management System (IPMS), following the rollout of the system to the Port of Richards Bay late last year. TNPA began registering Richards Bay port users onto the IPMS network from 23 November 2015. The MS INSIGNIA passenger vessel was the first to be brought into the port on 26 November using the new ‘smartPORT’ technology. IPMS has been rolled out to the Ports of Durban, Cape Town, Saldanha, Port Elizabeth, Ngqura, East London, Mossel Bay and now recently Richards Bay over four months beginning late July 2015. The technology was developed by Navayuga Infotech, a company based in India, in collaboration with their South African partner Nambiti Technologies. The system replaces manual processes that were previously used for monitoring Marine Operations, Vessel Traffic Services and Terminal Performance and

enables key port operations to be managed online and in real time across TNPA’s eight commercial ports. Since IPMS was first introduced in July, more than 300 vessel agents have registered onto the system and more than 1600 vessel arrival notifications have been submitted across all eight ports. TNPA Chief Executive Richard Vallihu said: “We are extremely pleased to see the completion of this strategic project that aims to support the broader objectives of the Transnet Market Demand Strategy (MDS) – which is now in its fourth year – in terms of efficiency and productivity." "This journey began in 2008 and is the culmination of various feasibility studies where we identified the need for an automated and web-based system to improve port operations, strengthen efficiencies and enhance competitiveness.” Vallihu said the IPMS was benchmarked against Malaysian and Singaporean ports which were among the world’s most efficient. It is a ground-breaking initiative in that for the first time in the world a system such as this is integrated across multiple ports on a single platform. Richards Bay Port Manager, Preston Khomo, said: “Apart from a technological competitive edge, IPMS will bolster transparency and efficiencies in the port while enabling business continuity for our customers, visitors and general stakeholders.” Enquiry no: 8

However, land availability in the Port of Durban is limited and the lateral expansion of Vopak South Africa’s facilities at the FarewellKing site was not feasible. Heavy lifts at SAPREF refinery

ohnson Crane Hire undertook the heavy lifts associated with maintenance work on two columns at SAPREF’s North Zone Unit during the biannual turnaround at the Durban refinery in 2015. The company also supplied 65 cranes, dedicated to general plant maintenance tasks, as well 14 additional operators to facilitate night shift works. Harry Haripursad, KwaZulu-Natal regional manager for Johnson Crane Hire, says the ability to manage multiple lifts simultaneously is a major differentiator for Johnson Crane Hire, and the company has a longstanding relationship with SAPREF, which he attributes to the provision of reliable lifting services of a consistently high standard. Johnson Crane Hire utilised its Liebherr LR-1600/2 to execute a number of heavy lifts as part of the repair work. This crane, only one of several large capacity crawler cranes operated as part of the Johnson Crane Hire’s fleet of crawler and lat-

tice boom cranes, has a SWL capacity of 600 metric ton. The single most challenging aspect faced was the extremely limited space available to both assemble and operate this huge crane. The assembly and operation of the crane within such constraints required skill, careful planning and attention to detail.

A specially constructed crane pad was built to accommodate the crane and facilitate the lifting activities. Crane assembly was over 11 days and the heavy lifts were completed in just over two weeks. A further 11 days were required to dismantle the crane. The first lift comprised the offloading of a new prefabricated ‘can’ section with a mass of 13 metric tons. The ‘can’ section was lifted into a temporary support structure that was specifically built for attaching the ‘can’ section to the existing top section of the column. The top section of the existing C 4101 column was removed and placed on top of the temporary support structure to facilitate assembly, alignment and welding. The corroded section was removed from the existing column and placed on the ground for subsequent removal by a 100 ton LTR 1100 hydraulic crawler crane, also supplied by Johnson Crane Hire. The newly constructed top, with a calculated mass of 143 metric tons, was lifted into position at a lift radius of 43 metres. Enquiry no: 10

Bridge City attracts investors

evelopment at Bridge City to the north of Durban is gathering momentum with the precinct not only emerging as a key investment location but also as a strategic regional precinct and transport hub. Brian Ive, a Development Executive at Tongaat Hulett Developments, said that a number of sales had been concluded recently and that construction of two of these developments was due to begin during the first quarter. Bridge City is being developed as the second leg of the Effingham Development Joint Venture Public Private Sector Partnership between the eThekwini Municipality and Tongaat Hulett. The first was the highly successful Riverhorse

Valley Business Estate. However, whilst the latter is primarily industrial with a single hospital, Bridge City is a mixed use development that will provide for light industrial use as well as accommodate medical, commercial, retail and residential elements. Ive said that the holistic planning of the area catered for each of these crucial elements and was expected to make a significant contribution to providing employment for and uplifting communities within the neighbouring Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu (INK) area. He added that, as the civils and services contract for the Business Estate had been completed, construction of new projects could now start. Bridge City is expected to mainly attract companies within the retail, residential, warehousing and logistics sectors due to its close proximity to major arterial routes and to the King Shaka International Airport. Added benefits for temporary employees A

ccording to the Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI), recent amendments to the Labour Relations Act (LRA) and Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) will provide temporary workers with added protection and benefits. For employees earning less than R205 433 per annum the new amendments will afford them a three month period during which they are considered as temporary employees. At the end of this period they will be considered to be indefinite employees by both the temporary employment services (TES or labour broker) as well as the client (employer) for the purposes of the Labour Relations Act – see s198(1)(b)(i) and s198(2)(b)(ii) unless there is a legitimate fixed term contract.

It should be noted that the triangular relationship between the TES, the ‘employee’ and the client does not dissolve and neither does the commercial relationship come to an end after the three months. The commercial relationship between the TES and the client after the shift in liability will however need to be negotiated and it is clear from recent case law that if the terms of the new agreement infringe upon the rights of employees, it will not be binding and the courts will reject such an argument. Section 198 (4F) emphasises that after three months a TES employee must be treated in the same way as an equivalent employee of the client. The justifiable exceptions, as noted in Section 198D (2) of the law, could be based on:

(a) seniority, experience or length of service; (b) merit; (c) the quality or quantity of work performed; or (d) any other criteria of a similar nature (and such reason is not prohibited by section 6(1) of the Employment Equity Act, 1998 (Act No. 55 of 1998). In terms of Section 10 is it suggested that one week of remuneration per year of service should be paid to employees engaged in a fixed term contract for a genuine project that only kicks off after 24 months. This would need to be budgeted for by companies. An amendment of Section 198(3) explains that an employer may engage an employee on a fixed term contract or successive fixed

term contracts for longer than three months of employment only if the nature of the work for which the employee is engaged is of a limited or definite duration; or the employer can demonstrate any other justifiable reason for fixing the term of the contract. Section 6(1) of the Act now states that no person may unfairly discriminate, directly or indirectly, against an employee, in any employment policy or practice, on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, family responsibility, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, HIV status, conscience, belief, political opinion, culture, language, and birth or on any other arbitrary ground. Two new subsections have been

added to the Act. In subsection (4) a difference in terms and conditions of employment between employees of the same employer, performing the same or substantially the same work or work of equal value (as prescribed by the Minister in subsection 5, after consulting the Commission) that is directly or indirectly based on any of the grounds listed in subsection (1), is considered to be unfair discrimination. Section 8 of the principal Act has also been amended in terms of prohibiting psychological testing and other similar assessments of an employee unless the test or assessment being used, amongst other reasons, has been scientifically shown to be valid and reliable and can be applied fairly to employees. Quantity surveyor’s cost controlling role vital - but increasingly ignored

S

outh Africa’s shrinking economy, coupled with soaring building costs, have made construction cost control more important than ever. “Yet there is an alarming tendency - particularly on major government

contracts - to totally omit the Quantity Surveyor from the professional team,” cautions Larry Feinberg, executive director of the Association of S.A. Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS). “This could lead to spiralling costs and a total lack of control on man-

agement of what could be multimillion rand projects.” Feinberg says although Quantity Surveying is by no means a new profession, there still seems to be surprising ignorance about the vital role a Quantity Surveyor plays in - and can contribute to - building projects. “Too often the inclusion of a QS in a project’s professional team is seen as a dispensable, additional cost. However, a competent QS - such as the members of ASAQS - will provide the certainty and control a project needs, while also helping to reduce costs. Major building projects tend to be complex undertakings right from the outset, and can get even more complicated when design changes are introduced - without the client

and professional team realising the cost factors involved. This is when the skills of a QS are particularly essential. He or she will handle any unforeseen procurements and project management revisions so architects and the rest of the professional team can concentrate on their own tasks,” Feinberg added. Bert van den Heever, president of ASAQS, outlined the vital input a QS could bring to a construction project: “A QS manages all costs relating to building, civil engineering and mining projects, from the initial estimates to the final figures. He or she seeks to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while - importantly - still achieving the required standards and quality. Many

“DUBE TRADEPORT IS A GREAT LOCATION WITH EXCELLENT POTENTIAL FOR CAPITAL GROWTH.” Garry Hamilton, Director: Hodari Properties www.hodariprop.com

With years of property development and investment experience in warehousing, offices and retail, Hodari Properties regards Dube TradePort as our preferred development location. Land for development is scarce and Dube TradePort is our preference, as opposed to available alternatives, because it is a great location, provides easy access to infrastructure and an upgraded road network, offers great pricing on land and is secure. While our current combined 12 000m² warehouse and 1 000m² office development enables our tenant, logistics company DB Schenker, to consolidate various sites into one centre at Dube TradeZone, we are also working with other clients, including a number looking at office components, with a view to their locating at Dube TradePort. emand-oriented motor control is enabling users to reduce their electricity consumption by up to 80% compared to fixed-displacement drives. Bosch Rexroth has recently added two new models to its range of frequency converters, the EFC 3610 and EFC 5610, to provide intelligent speed and torque control for motors from 400 W up to 18.5 kW. Bosch Rexroth’s EFC-class frequency converters are open-source, scalable and expandable drive controls that are easily integrated into many different kinds of machines and automation environments, including in pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors, presses and packaging machines. The EFC 3610 is a universal, low-cost converter for control and demand-oriented energy supply for almost all industry segments. The EFC 5610 is a high-torque solution with efficient, high-performance vector control for specialised requirements and an expanded power range (up to 18.5 kW). Both are available in heavy-duty and normal-duty configurations. The communications interface of the EFC converters has expanded to include support for Modbus, Profibus and CAN bus protocols. Pluggable I/O connection terminals and fieldbus modules enable a high degree of expandability and flexibility in the way drive architectures can be configured.

Integrated brake choppers and mains filters (EN61800-3 C3) reduce the need for external componentry, enhancing the plug-and-play functionality of these products. Process control is improved through integrated PID controllers alongside an eight-step sequence control system. Other innovative features, such as the detachable control interface that allows parameters to be dumped into additional drives using the panel’s memory and copy function, enhance the overall usability of the EFCs. Additional braking resistors are available for applications where the controlled motor is required to stop instantly, dissipating the electromotive voltage. The Bosch Rexroth frequency converter range will soon be expanded to support motors up to 22 kW, and will also include the Ethernet range of communications. Apart from lowering the electricity bill through reduced and more efficient consumption, frequency converters lower capex by reducing the requirements of the associated switchgear, while also limiting component stress for a longer motor life. Bosch Rexroth frequency converters are distributed in sub-Saharan Africa by Tectra Automation, a Hytec Group Company.

flexible and entirely maintenancefree range of electric cylinders was introduced to the African market in late-2015 by SEW-Eurodrive, following overwhelming success of the product in the European market. By incorporating its proven gear motor oil bath lubrication system into its electric cylinder offering, SEW-Eurodrive’s new CMS63S range features a number of special properties, such as; a very high thermal power density, increased efficiency and zero maintenance throughout the entire service life. In standard electric cylinders, screw drives are usually lubricated with grease. According to SEW-Eurodrive mechatronic E:\!BMG\#Jobs\Adverts\2015\122015\BMG-DRI01122015-KZN.cdr application engineer, Paul Strzalkowski this 01 December 2015 11:38:57 AM Color profile: Disabled always results in a minor loss of lubricant, with regular relubrication becoming a necesComposite Default screen

sity. “The oil bath, located in the linear unit, is closed off externally by means of two sealing systems. By using robust, tried-and-tested seals used in hydraulics, there is no need for seals on the individual internal components,” he says. The oil bath has a positive effect on the service life of the spindle nut, bearings and guides. “There is less friction, which results in less heat being generated in the components. What’s more, the lubricant transfers any heat from the components inside the motor to the housing surface.” The CMS63S linear unit also features a servo drive motor, with parts of the linear unit integrated into the rotor of the motor. CMS63S electric cylinders are suitable for a wide range of applications, ranging from the food and beverage to automotive industries, thanks to the compact design of the selfEnquiry no: 18 contained drive system.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Boosting science teaching N dukwenhle High School in Umlazi, Durban, received a welcome boost recently with the handover of an upgraded and fully equipped science laboratory as well as new ablution facilities, compliments of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). Ndukwenhle High is one of TNPA’s 15 adopted schools in the South Durban Basin - an initiative designed to build TNPA’s own capabilities within the port by developing mission critical skills within its communities from the ground up. The investment at Ndukwenhle High included furniture, science laboratory equipment, chemicals, a smartboard with the Science curriculum installed and enhanced security features for the classroom. The handover coincided with the news that 16 former matriculants from TNPA’s 15 adopted schools had been

accepted into the General Purpose Rating (GPR) programme offered by the Maritime School of Excellence, which commenced in November. The school is a worthy recipient having improved its Matric pass rate from 17% in 2011 to 86% last year under the Principal, Mr Nkosinathi Shandu, who took over the leadership in 2012. Prior to his appointment the school was notorious for vandalism, drug

abuse, crime and unruly behaviour. Head of Department in the KwaZuluNatal Department of Education, Dr Nkosinathi SP Sishi, was guest speaker at the handover. He said: “These kind of partnerships that we have established as the Department of Education are vital in realising the country’s dream of allowing our youth the opportunity to participate in careers such as those in the maritime industry.” He called on the learners to take advantage of their new infrastructure and to prioritise their schooling. Earlier this year Ndukwenhle High was awarded Certificates of Excellence by the Department of Basic Education and Mangosutho University of Technology, in recognition of its outstanding performance in Mathematics and for being the most improved school in Umlazi District. Stellenbosch wins PneuDrive Challenge

T

he very successful PneuDrive Challenge, a mechatronics design competition for engineering students throughout South Africa, has come to a close for 2015 with Stellenbosch once again walking away with top honours. The theme of this year’s competition was to design a game changer for the food and beverage industry. The Top Three Teams for the 2015 Competition are: 1. Stellenbosch University – BottleBot. 2. WITS – The Potato Game Changer 3. WITS – Autonomous Warehouse Floor Cleaner (Who also received the Innovation Prize). The Stellenbosch University Mechabrewers team visited local micro beer brewery Stellenbrau, and analysed a specific problem – the need for an efficient, inexpensive and automated application for transporting empty beer bottles on to the capping machine. Micro-breweries do not always have the capital to invest in expensive equipment. Stellenbrau relies on manual labour for most of their operations. The team consisted of Reghardt Pretorius, Johannes Leuvennink, Madeli du Toit, Josua Blom and Jean Swart under the guidance of lecturer Dr. Cobus Muller.

The solution proposed by the team aims to improve and add value to the company by allowing better utilisation of labour, and improvements in time and efficiency, by automating the process of transporting empty beer bottles on to a capping machine. BottleBot has a low energy consumption of 24.474 kWh per year, and has been designed to be controlled by a smart phone or tablet device. One cycle consists of picking up twelve bottles on one side of the production line and placing it onto the capping machine on the opposite side. The duration of one cycle is a minimum of 8 seconds. The BottleBot’s retail price will be significantly lower than the price of similar products available on the market. The capital expenses of the BottleBot will be justified after two and a half years. Formal prize giving for this competition takes place in January 2016.

"Women in maize" to empower women farmers

T

he Minister of Small Business Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, along with the South African Breweries (SAB) and the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), will partner in a R20-million investment initiative to fast track the inclusion of black emerging women farmers into the formal economy. This will be achieved by supporting the development of emerging womenowned enterprises into sustainable entities that will supply SAB. Called “Women in Maize”, the initiative will support women farmers with, amongst others, access to finance, technical expertise support, capacity building, business training and mentorship, and access to markets. The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) and Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) will also play a crucial role in strengthening the support

provided to the farmers through additional financing and cooperative business skills training. The initiative forms part of SAB’s long standing Go Farming programme which is designed to address the many challenges encountered by emerging farmers. The first phase of the initiative targeted around 100 emerging farmers in Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal and their selection to participate in the programme was based on various criteria including size of land, unrestricted access to land and its farming history, as well as the investment readiness of the enterprise. The planting of the yellow maize cultivars, took place during November 2015. The project is estimated to deliver 16 000 tons of yellow maize that SAB will purchase from the farmers through appointed agencies.

he recent Grayston Drive bridge collapse once again highlighted the fragility of life and brought home the fact that danger potentially lurks around every corner. Ensuring on-site safety is not just the domain of large corporations, but equally the responsibility of SMME’s. Irrespective of the size of your company, safety needs to be prioritised. “Keeping up to date with current occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation can be tedious and finding the right supplier is generally a lengthy and frustrating process for many. Even once a supplier has been identified, how can you be certain that their products are manufactured in compliance with minimum standards and regulations?” says Joshua Low, A-OSH EXPO Event Director at Specialised Exhibitions. Now in its fifth year, A-OSH EXPO 2016 has earned its reputation as Africa’s largest and most targeted occupational health and safety exhibition. The event, which takes place from 24-26 May 2016 at Gallagher Convention Centre, last year saw 85 exhibitors plying their trade and 2 445 visitors reviewing and sourcing products and services. Low says that stand bookings for the 2016 show are brisk and visitors can look forward to the widest variety of OHS products and services available in one venue over a concentrated three-day period. “We have also adopted a number of visitor attractions that make the show experience even more worthwhile. And we need to highlight our free-to-attend PASMA Working at Height and NOSHEBO seminar Theatres. As in the past few years, Saiosh will also be running their comprehensive conference alongside A-OSH EXPO.” One of these attraction is the Business Matchmaking Programme, an initiative which was launched at the 2015 event. agnet offers local industry a specialist on-site inspection service to ensure a plant’s electrical installation complies with the law, in terms of the Government’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSH Act). These inspections are carried out by Magnet’s training manager, Johan Roets, with over 35 years’ experience in the electrical sector. “It is critical - whether it’s an electrical installation in the home environment, or in the work place - that the electrician possesses appropriate qualifications and is a registered electrical contractor. The onus is on the user of any electrical installation to ensure this is the case,” says Johan Roets training manager, Magnet, specialists in the supply, implementation and support of electrical equipment and industrial instrumentation. “An electrical compliance certificate is proof that the electrical installation is safe and com-

plies with the current OSH Act and regulations. In the event of damage to property resulting from an electrical fault, the insurance company will require a valid electrical certificate. “Magnet’s inspection and test programme is based on the Electrical Code of Practice SANS 10142-1. This service is offered to diverse industries, including shopping centres, hotels, banks, hospitals, industrial premises and hazardous environments.” Magnet also offers a power quality analysis service to industries that include the mines, metal manufacturing, sugar mills, the railways and power utilities, as well as to power factor correction and electrical consultants. Innovations and safety in low level access

E

azi Sales and Service, a leading supplier of world renowned access equipment brands to the Southern Africa market, such as JLG, Magni and Maeda, recently introduced Power Towers range of low-level access equipment to the local market. The success that Eazi Sales and Service have achieved with the JLG brand in the local market will be further enhanced with the introduction of Power Towers that fills a gap in its portfolio in the low access area. Founded in 2007, Power Towers specializes in the engineering and manufacturing of low level access products which comprises a range of seven mast-based models; the self-propelled SP range, the push around Power Tower and Nano, and the latest non-powered Eco range, Pecolift and, Ecolift, that are rated for indoor

and in some cases, outdoor use. Low level access describes an entirely new specialist sector within the access industry. The term is generally used to denote operating environments up to 4.5m to 5m working height, internally and on flat level surfaces, using manual or powered access equipment. The applications could be determined by using base ‘A’ frame step ladders or a self propelled power access platform. The introduction of the Power Towers low level access platform range by Eazi Sales and Service will no doubt provide a quick, cost effective and safer alternative to using aluminium towers, ladders and steps. Able to be positioned ‘at the job’ within minutes, the product range offers unparalleled efficiency and productivity in a multi-storey environment, for

finishing trades such as electrical contracting, dry lining and ceiling slabs up to 5m. The cost-effectiveness, productivity and safety inherent in the powered and non-powered range, combined with the manoeuvrability and ease of operation, could never be achieved with a scaffold tower or podium, considering that the achievable work rate can be up to eight times faster using the Power Towers. Cleaning up cycle route

oscor Cleaning Equipment’s heavy-duty mechanical sweeper helped to increase the safety of all cyclists participating in this year’s Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge by cleaning up the route. Jonathan Kirsch, Sales Manager at Goscor Cleaning Equipment, which forms part of the Goscor Group of Companies, explained that they put their most advanced mechanical road sweeper, the MACRO M60, through its paces to sweep up debris such as glass, wood, stones and other potentially hazardous objects along the cycle route prior to the race. “The removal of loose sand and stones from the road surface not only help to reduce the number of punctures but will also make cornering safer for the riders.” According to Kirsch, a number of excellent features make the sweeper the perfect solution for reliable, cost

effective and seamless urban road sweeping. The 6m³ hopper volume and 6000kg net payload allow the sweeper to work fast and efficiently for extended shifts, even under the harshest of urban road conditions while the unit’s large surface filters ensure dust-free opera-

tion. The four-wheel steering delivers excellent manoeuvrability and Kirsch adds that the machine’s excellent sweeping system allows for effortless sweeping in unbalanced conditions such as over speed bumps. He also points out that the machine’s ‘load sensing’ hydraulic system reduces both fuel consumption and service costs. The well-equipped and spacious cabin provides premium operator comfort. The cycling challenge organisers rented the M60 work horse from Cleaning Equipment over a three day period to make sure that the entire route cycle ready. “This is the first time that our road cleaning equipment was rented by the organisers of the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and we are extremely proud to have been a part of Jo’burg’s biggest cycling event this year,” concludes Kirsch. The rise of rope access popularity

D

ue to its ability to reduce maintenance downtime and complete work quicker in the safest possible manner, rope access is becoming an increasingly-popular choice for industrial rescue, maintenance and cleaning tasks across South Africa. Skyriders marketing manager Mike Zinn explains that more industries are discovering the benefits of rope access and are moving away from conventional means. “Maintenance budgets are under considerable strain and, faced with the dilemma of limited funds for carrying out maintenance work and ensuring that the plant or facility can still operate effectively, companies are moving towards rope access, as it saves on the access component, with a safe and professional end result.” Rope access is one of the most cost-effective and safe ways to access difficult-to-reach points in a number of applications, especially when the cost of access is disproportionate to the scope of work. It is ideal on tall structures, such as smoke stacks, cooling

I

towers and boilers. The scope of rope access work includes maintenance such as cleaning, repair, painting and inspections. “Rope access provides flexibility, as rope access technicians are able to traverse obstacles in order to carry out numerous tasks relating to inspection, maintenance and surveying, all while they are suspended in their

secure position. Rope access is also highly-effective for numerous rescue tasks in any application over 2 m above ground,” Zinn continues. According to Zinn, South Africa is at the forefront of international rope access trends. “In some cases, we are ahead of developed countries such as Australia, which hardly uses rope access in its power generation industry, whereas it is fairly mainstream in South Africa. The adaptation of the ISO standards for rope access is another indication that we are keeping up with international trends.” Skyriders boasts extensive experience in all rope access applications, and undertakes work in the power generation, mining, facilities management and heavy industries. It offers services such as nondestructive testing (NDT) and inspection, concrete inspection, maintenance and repairs, application of coating systems, work at height safety systems, welding, and confined space Enquiry no: 31 rescue and standby.

Achieving flawless floors C o ns t r u c t i o n firm URE Projects (Pty) Ltd recently finished a high-level project where the company was contracted to polish 10 400 m² of flooring for two warehouses using diamond segmented metal bond grinding shoes, sealer and a densifier from Diamond Products. The project was undertaken by a team of 16 people working day and night shifts for 40 days in early 2015. URE Projects director Kuben Naidoo explains that the company’s core focus is polishing, maintenance, sealing and restoration of concrete floors, which is a sustainable flooring alternative that does not require wax or coating. “We mostly do commercial flooring where the surface is likely to experience wear-and-tear from heavy traffic. Proper sealing of the floor every few years and regular mopping can guarantee a tenyear lifespan.” Concrete flooring is an intricate

process comprised of multiple stages, including; cutting, grinding, grouting and burnishing the sealer to give the floor a glossy finish. There is a wide variety of design options to choose from, such as decorative engravings, graphics or dye with the available sheen levels. Naidoo notes that concrete grinding and polishing presents its own set of challenges such as holes in the floor, undesirable floor angles and the unsatisfactory strength of concrete. “The installer therefore relies heavily on the performance of their tools. Usage of inferior products for this process will quickly show in the results. The floor will not have the desired shine, and the strength of the floor will be compromised, which might result in cracking,” he notes. According to Naidoo, URE Projects started using Diamond Products a year ago after finding its service impressive. Enquiry no: 30

A winning year for SAIMC I t’s been a busy year for the Durban branch of the Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control (SAIMC) which culminated in a event in December where patron sponsors were invited to showcase their products and services to members and interested visitors alike. Technology evenings are the lifeblood of the organisation and Branch Chairman Howard Lister reported that these “continue to be well supported by the members and the branch is going from strength to strength in this area of the organisation.” They are held once a month on the first Wednesday of each month at the Durban Country Club and all members and visitors alike are encouraged to attend them. In July the branch held their 6th annual golf day at the Kloof Country Club which went off very well and also increases in popularity each year. Those who attend find it a good opportunity to spoil clients, do a bit of networking and get some exercise. The 2016 event will be held at the same venue on 22 July. According to Lister, Durban will be hosting IPAC 2016 (International Process Automation Control Conference) which is due to the efforts of Professor Ralph Naidoo of MUT,

SAIMC patron sponsors: • Alpine Instruments - strives to supply innovative, high quality and cost effective solutions for all industrial measurement needs. • East Coast Solutions • Endress & Hauser • Gail Norton Instruments • Heaton Valves Africa • Hydro Sytems Tubing • ICA - Industrial Control & Automation • Krohne • OsiSoft • Proconics • Pulse Control Systems • Unitronics • Valve & Automation • Wika Instruments

Desiree from Montwood and the Durban committee. This is an international Automation Conference and Lister anticipates participation from international academia as well as industry. Details of the conference will be finalised at a later date. The hard work and commitment of the Durban branch was recognised in the winning of bronze status for the year. Each branch is scored on specific criteria with different weighting for various activities such as technology evenings, training courses, technical articles published in magazines as well as social functions such as golf days, annual dinners etc.

This is a significant achievement and is validation that they are doing a good job. There is a significant amount of work involved in running a branch like this, especially considering it is a voluntary organisation. Although the main focus of SAIMC is a technical one, networking and social functions also have their place and the Durban branch recently held their annual dinner at the Durban Country Club. For further information on becoming a member, patron sponsor or being added to the database of technology meeting notifications please email John Owen-Ellis at john.owen-ellis@saimc.co.za.

How is national fuel price determined?

A

ccording to Afric Oil CEO Tseke Nkadimeng, the two most prominent variables in determining the fuel price are the US$ price of crude oil, and the Rand’s performance against the Dollar. “When oil prices rise and fall, so does the petrol price. Exchange rate performance is also a major contributor, and the Rand’s poor performance in recent months is indicative of the higher fuel prices.” Freight costs are also a determining factor, as most of South Africa’s fuel is imported by ship from the Arab Gulf region. The cost of freight is also priced in US$, and exchange rates once again play a central role. These costs can be further compounded by demurrage, which is the penalty costs incurred by ships delayed in foreign ports. The cargo must also be insured when in transit. Once these international costs have been dealt with, local costs are enforced too. Cargo dues are the

costs associated with offloading the cargo at the harbour. The fuel is then held in coastal storage facilities, which charge around 2c/ℓ per day with a maximum of 25 days storage. The cost of financial transactions and credit facilities also needs to be covered through stock financing. Government taxes and levies constitute up to 50% of the fuel retail price. Other factors that determine the fuel price are the wholesale margin that distributors are allowed to add to the wholesale price.

Ensuring high quality for safety

This currently stands at 64c/ℓ. The next is the dealer margin, which currently stands at 155 c/ℓ. These margins are adjusted annually and approved by the Minister of Energy. Nkadimeng stresses that it is important to bear in mind that these margins do not go straight into the pockets of wholesalers and retailers, as a large percentage of these funds are redirected to overhead costs, such as staff wages, transportation, infrastructure and rent, to name a few. “This is an extremely low-margin, turnover-based industry. Depending on efficiency, wholesalers realistically only make between 15c and 25c per litre after costs, while retailers make between 30c and 35c per litre after costs. Investment is also onerous, for example, a service station selling 200 000 litres per month requires about R2,5-million in facilities – which is significant for small players.” Enquiry no: 34

eir, Xylem and Kirloskar ranked as top three global pumps manufacturers in Timetric’s survey, accounting for 47% of total nominations. A recent survey by Timetric’s Mining Intelligence Center (MIC) asked over 630 mine managers and senior decision-makers across more than 500 mines globally, to nominate the leading manufacturers (in first and second place) for different types of mining equipment, including pumps and submersibles, regardless of their own supplier. With more than 240 votes and nominating 50 different manufacturers, combining nominations as the first and second leading company, respondents nominated Weir Minerals as the leading manufacturer of mining pumps, dewatering pumps and submersibles, receiving 24% of the total nominations. This was followed by Xylem with 14% of the total nominations, and Kirloskar in third place with 9%. AllightSykes was next with 5% of the total pool and KSB received 4% rounds out the top five manufacturers. The results show the strength of Weir Minerals in penetrating the market in five of the six regions, where they received more than 20% of the votes. Xylem, however, is the only other top manufacturer that received nominations in every region, with the most mentions in Latin America of the leading manufacturers. Australia, Asia and Africa appear to be more competitive markets for the leading players as four out of five of the top manufacturers received nominations in each of these regions. AllightSykes, an Australian based company, was mentioned the most in Australia but was also considered as a leading manufacturer in Asia and Africa. Kirloskar appears to be the leading pumps manufacturer in Asia receiving 41% of the total nominations for the region. Although Kirloskar is an Indian-based company it is also nominated as Africa’s leading manufacturer. Timetric’s Senior Mining Analyst Nez Guevera comments: “Conditions in mining industries around the world remain challenging as the fall in commodity prices have far-ranging impacts that will continue to weaken the unit sales of new mining pumps. However, there are opportunities for growth with the demand for replacement pumps, a bigger focus on recycling and reusing water, and investments made towards productivity Enquiry no: 36 improvements.”

Spray technology for pollution control

he requirements for spray T nozzles used in pollution control applications are extensive

and include precise performance, trouble free operation and long service life. Spraying Systems Co. offers a wide range of spray technology for quench, FGD, mist elimination washing, gas cooling, SCR NOx reduction and chemical injection. The company offering ranges from SpiralJet nozzles producing fine drops for gas – liquid contact to ensure effective mass transfer, to a range of Nitride – bonded silicon carbide nozzles most widely used in flue gas desulpherization for spraying line slurries. Spraying Systems Co also offers an unmatched range of gas treatment products. Uneven cleaning of mist eliminator equipment has serious consequences and yet is a fairly common problem. Hard residue often forms on the chevrons, reducing the area for the gas to pass through. These restricted openings will ultimately compromise the performance of the scrubber and the mist eliminator. One of the best ways to avoid build-up is to use non-clog, maximum free passage, FullJet spray nozzles for wash-down that provide even, thorough cleaning of each chevron.

The nozzles of choice in gas conditioning are the FloMax A Series nozzles .These dual fluid nozzles outperform all others when it comes to drop size, evaporation, spray pattern uniformity and efficiency. Also on offer is a turnkey system from AutoJet Technologies the systems division of Spraying Systems Co. – which optimizes the performance of FloMax nozzles and controls all other system components including pumps, sensors and other hydraulic and pneumatic components. The AutoJet Spray Controller monitors and automatically adjusts the closed-loop system. By regulating liquid and air flow to the nozzles based on data gathered from temperature sensors, the controller offers the highest level of reactivity and accuracy for the system. Spraying Systems Co. is a global leader in spray technology. It has the broadest product range in the industry, ten manufacturing facilities and sales offices in more than 85 countries. Improved energy efficiency C ompressed air is one of the most important utilities in industry but it is also one of the largest consumers of energy. According to Charl Ackerman, Atlas Copco Compressor Technique’s Industrial Air Business Line Manager, energy consumption typically represents over 70% of a compressor’s life cycle cost. While there are a number of areas in a compressed air installation where wastage can occur, optimum air flow is one area in particular that can deliver significant energy savings. “This is where our VSD technology comes into its own. With energy savings of up to 35%, a GA VSD compressor is an investment in sustainable plant operation.”

Pioneered by Atlas Copco in 1994, the VSD compressor perfectly matches air supply to air demand in processes where air demand profiles fluctuate. By varying the speed drive of the drive motor, the compressor follows fluctuation in production demand; as air demand declines or is reduced, the GA VSD lowers the delivered flow and

consequently the power consumption. Motor speed regulation is the most efficient compressor control method where air demand varies because the inefficient transition period between full and no load is eliminated which avoids excessive off-load power consumption. Maintaining the net pressure band within 0.10 bar (15 psi), greatly reduces the overall average working pressure and energy costs. VSD technology also conserves natural resources. The extensive Atlas Copco’s oil-injected rotary screw GA VSD compressor range available from 5.5 kW up to 160 kW, ensures there is a unit perfectly suited to meet any compressed air requirement. In combination with the Trakpactor 260 the duo have an aggressive action and fast throughput of over 200 tons per hour (tph) that enables it to compete with much bigger and bulkier machines. “On the other hand, our full range provides options for all other industries with large-scale screens capable of outputs of over 800tph and jaw, cone and impact crushers for large scale Enquiry no: 42 mining operations.

Linear motion systems available locally

TAF integrated linear motion systems, which include linear guides, ball screws and linear tables, are available in Southern Africa exclusively from BMG. “With the growing demand locally for economical yet efficient linear way products, BMG has established a partnership with OME Technology, to supply and support STAF linear motion components. This range is known globally for high speed and precision, easy integration and interchangeability, energy saving and environmental protection,” says Rouff Essop, general manager, bearings division, BMG. “STAF linear motion products are used in diverse applications, including welding, soldering and drilling; industrial machinery;

measuring and inspection; printing, scanning and packaging; assembly plants and warehousing, as well as in robotic arms and manipulators.” Linear guides - the key part of precision instruments - are used in conjunction with compact ball screws which are locked onto a platform and linked to a servo motor, to produce linear motion. The main function of the guide is to allow the platform to maintain high precision, high rigidity and high load motion. STAF linear guides have a common rail, interchangeable alloy steel slide, designed for reliability and flex-

ibility. The dust sealing twin lip structure ensures effective sealing and the large internal lubricant storage facility reduces maintenance requirements and extends the service life of the system. Cage and non cage types, which are fitted on the same profile rail, have new patented features which include a ball re-circulation design, with no gap, for smooth running. The newly designed chain lubrication system reduces friction during operation and extends service life of the system. STAF’s advanced lubrication system ensures lubricating oil reaches all surfaces in the loop during operation and in static state, oil loss is minimal. Enquiry no: 43

Towards an energy-efficient future

W

ith mounting pressure for industries to reduce their carbon emissions, hydrogen is a ‘hot topic’ in both the motor vehicle manufacturing and renewable energy sectors. For Tshwane-based specialised engineering company RTS Africa Engineering, hydrogen-based technologies have exciting implications for a more energy-efficient future. The company is the sole agency for leading global hydrogen technology company NEL Hydrogen in sub-Saharan Africa. “Hydrogen is potentially the energy carrier of the future: by transforming electricity to hydrogen through water electrolysis, energy can be stored for later use. It is also considered one of the important fuels of the future as it provides clean and emission-free fuel for transport,” says Ian Fraser, Managing Director of RTS Africa Engineering.

NEL Hydrogen, a Norwegian company, has been at the forefront of hydrogen production through water electrolysis (the process of splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using an electrical current) since 1927. The company produces electrolysers for large-scale hydrogen production; as well as for hydrogen storage of renewable energy and has installed more than 500 electrolyser units around the world.

In Africa, these include installations in Kenya, Egypt, Algeria and Nigeria. Locally in South Africa, these include installations in Saldanha Bay and Sezela in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). These units are extremely robust and reliable, requiring almost no maintenance. “Our hydrogen production plants have an extremely long life-cycle, 40 years or more. A case in point is the electrolyser that we installed for a leading sugar producer back in 1983, which runs for 24 hours a day and is still fully operational,” says Eric Dabe, Sales Director at NEL Hydrogen. “The technology itself is very simple, stable and safe, providing a reliable, ongoing supply of hydrogen. The only ‘maintenance’ required is an overhaul of the electrolyser cells. Enquiry no: 44

locally, and is the sole authorised distributor for two leading European door brands, Nergeco and Alpha. New managing director August Winter said that the initial focus of his management team would be on stabilising relationships with existing customers. “We have commissioned a new ERP system to enable us to better communicate stock availability,” Winter said. “We have also expanded the service department, increasing staff levels and re-equipping with new tools, new vehicles and a stockholding of critical parts for quicker turnaround times. This represents a significant expansion and improvement of the old facility,” he added. Winter said that the improved service levels and DDL’s proven range of very high quality products would allow the company to reclaim its position as market leader. “The local economy is undergoing a change of focus from manufacturing

to importing, creating a whole new market in warehousing and distribution. It is our intention to dominate this market,” said Winter. He pointed to other trends in South Africa that offer opportunities. Increasing electricity costs were forcing cold storage users to re-examine the efficiency of their environmental control, and users involved in maintaining the cold chain would seek the best possible sealing solutions, he said. “Our big advantage is that we manufacture our sealing solutions locally, enabling quicker installation and a very much quicker service turnaround times than rival companies which have to import,” said Winter. “But we are not only focusing on cold chain applications. We are also going to expand the range of dock levellers to give the customer more options in terms of the fastest possible loading and unloading times." Enquiry no: 45

8700. The robot has a reach of 3.5 meters and is capable of handling a payload of up to 800 kg (1000 kg with the wrist down; 630 kg with LeanID). “When designing the IRB 8700, we emphasized reach and payload as well as performance,” says Ola Svanström, ABB Product Manager for Large Robots. “Thanks to ABB’s superior motion control technology at high moments of inertia, this our highest ever payload robot automatically adapts and adjusts its speed to accommodate heavy and wide parts. With a compact footprint, optimized counterweight, parallel linkages, stiff axes and fewer drive motors, the IRB 8700 keeps its momentum down and speed up.” The IRB 8700, ABB’s largest ever robot offers all the function-

ality and expertise of the ABB portfolio in a much bigger package. The robot has only one motor and one gear per robot axis, while most other robots in this size class use dual motors and/or gears. In addition, there are no gas springs; only a reliable counterweight and mechanical springs for counter balancing. Together these design elements mean the IRB 8700 has fewer components and is able to deliver shorter cycle times and higher accuracy. The IRB 8700 is available in two configurations, one with a reach of 4.2 meters and a payload of 550 kg (620kg with the wrist down; 475 with LeanID) and the other with a reach of 3.5 meters and a payload of 800 kg (1000kg with the wrist down; 630kg with LeanID). Multiple package languages, one solution

T

he pharmaceutical and healthcare industry faces a range of packaging and labelling challenges, from protecting sensitive biopharmaceuticals to preventing counterfeiting. One major hurdle is catering for multinational markets and patients who speak a range of different languages. With many pharmaceuticals being shipped across countries and continents, there is a growing need to ensure that product labels include multiple languages. In some areas, such as California in the US, lawmakers are putting more pressure on pharmacists to explain medical instructions to their customers in a range of languages.

However, the responsibility of communicating important instructions and information to pharmacists and patients ultimately lies with the pharmaceutical manufacturer or product owner. The issue is that there is often not enough space on traditional packaging solutions for product information in multiple languages. However, with Informational Fix-A-Form BookletLabels from Pyrotec PackMedia, it is possible to print any number of languages on one label (that fits in the place of your standard adhesive label) without having a negative impact on legibility, packaging size or appearance.

Second project for semi-automated yard control systems

A

CTOM Signalling has been awarded a further contract to provide and install yard control systems for various Transnet Freight Rail stations around the country, following its earlier successful execution of contracts for semi-automated yard control systems. The latest yard control contract is for a total of 13 yards. “We view the award of this second project to us as affirmation of our success with the earlier project in developing a yard control system that is effective and efficient, along with our installation of the system at the various yards in a satisfactory manner and substantially on time,” commented Peter Colborne, ACTOM Signalling’s General Manager. The new project, awarded in mid-August 2015 and scheduled for completion in December 2017, is for yard control systems for Kazerne, Natalspruit and Springs yards in Gauteng, Newcastle and Vryheid in Kwazulu-Natal, Witbank, Belfast, Nelspruit, Komatipoort and Oosbank in Mpumalanga, Phalaborwa and Thabazimbi in Limpopo and Rustenburg in North-West Province. “The initial project was very challenging as it involved converting the conceptual design into a commercial system against tight time constraints. Having overcome those hurdles in the first phase, we expect things to run

much more smoothly this time round,” Colborne stated. The yard control system is a semi-automated system that replaces existing manually-operated mechanical systems in which the points sets have to be thrown by a yard operator on the tracks. With the new system yard operators are provided with two alternatives for operating points sets, using either a trackside push-button or a local control panel (LCP) that, although a remote control system, is located in a line-ofsight position so that the operator can see the points or series of points he is controlling. The earlier project, executed between mid-2012 and the end of last year, comprised five yard control contracts for a total of 10 stations in Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal, Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. he local D-Series skid steer line-up has been extended following the recent introduction of the Cat 232D, a vertical lift unit wellsuited for niche markets like landscaping and agriculture. Equipped with an optional twospeed drive system topping out at around 18 kph, the 232D is powered by a Cat C2.2 engine and has a rated load capacity of 840 kg (and 885 kg with the optional counterweight). As for all D Series models, the Cat 232D’s lift arms have a tubular design that provides optimum lift characteristics and strength, while presenting a narrower profile, which enhances sight lines to the sides of the machine, the tyres, and to the work tool/coupler interface. The optional automatic work-tool coupler is electrically actuated, and replaces the previous hydraulically operated version. “The new coupler is simpler in design, eliminates hoses and connectors, and is eas-

ier to install in the field,” explains Barloworld Equipment product marketing manager, Desigen Naicker. An available high-flow auxiliaryhydraulic system provides flows to 97 L/min and pressures to 23 000 kPa. Both standard and high-flow auxiliary systems use connect-under-pressure quick disconnects. Caterpillar has designed the Cat 232D with specific work tool applications top of mind. For the agricultural market, these include bale spears; a bale grab (with a maximum opening of 1,8 m); a silage defacer; and a

side discharge bucket for sand and sawdust. Cat spear work tools are supplied in single tine configuration for round bales, and double tine with backrest for square bales. Spear attachments are now ready for shipment, with the balance of the above work tools available from the second quarter of 2016. Spears can be ordered in lengths of either 990 or 1 245 mm, depending on the materials handling requirement. Bale spears are secured to the rigid frame with tapered bearings. On the single bale spear, two additional stabiliser spears are located on the bottom of the frame, ensuring the security of the baled material when travelling and loading. A more specialised tool, Cat silage defacers will come in three different lengths, namely 1.8m, 2.1m and 2.4m. In turn, the side discharge bucket for sand and sawdust comes in either a 1,8m or 2,4m width. Enquiry no: 51

Using concrete strip roads to full advantage

S

outh Africa has yet to fully discover and utilise the benefits of concrete strip roads, says Bryan Perrie, MD of The Concrete Institute. Perrie says concrete strip roads, laid as wheel tracks, are economic and durable and particularly suitable as farm roads or roads in rural areas. “They can, therefore, be of invaluable use to the agricultural sector as well as communities living in outlying rural areas,” Perrie states. He says although concrete strip roads have proved themselves in many countries, the South African governmental road building sector as well as private land-owners have not yet fully realised the advantages, or fully utilised, concrete strip roads. Such roads are a particularly useful means of making steep rural farm roads passable in all weathers. “In the wet summer months, many potential visitors to inland private

game reserves avoid visiting the reserves and lodges with sedan vehicles for fear of getting stuck in the mud. Concrete strip roads, particularly in very muddy areas, could therefore boost tourism numbers. Strip roads are widely used in, for example, SANParks resorts like the Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock, KZN Wildlife Ezemvelo resorts such as in the Drakensberg and at the iSimangaliso Wetland Park at St Lucia, and at the upmarket Pezula Private Estate near Knysna on the Garden Route.” “Strip roads can be built without expensive or sophisticated equipment and by comparatively unskilled labour that has received just basic instruction. No reinforcement of the concrete is necessary. Furthermore, laying the strip roads can be done in short

lengths, so their construction can be slotted in when labour and time are available. “ The strip roads can be made relatively skid-resistant simply by wood floating the concrete as a final operation. For a strong skid-resistant finish, the concrete can be broomed transversely to the direction of traffic to produce a multitude of fine grooves Enquiry no: 52 across it.”

SA decision-makers adopt mobile business intelligence

n today’s competitive corporate environment, managerial decision-making processes require a wealth of information that can be enhanced and transformed with immediacy into effective action. Company managers find themselves spending great chunks of their day out of the office, and must execute critical decisions under complicated and unpredictable conditions. Mobility in business is increasingly exercising an influence on core organisational business processes. Advances in wireless technology, coupled with the rapid growth of mobile devices, and has spawned a new era in business computing: mobile business intelligence. In an effort to prove the importance of mobile BI for business with statistical findings, a recent South African study (using a sample of Cape Town-based SMMEs and large organisations) sought to scrutinise managers’ perceptions and usage of mobile BI. The study considered what factors would influence the usage of mobile BI for managerial decision-making, what impact mobile BI

would have on the manager’s behaviour in relation to decision-making in an organisation, and how using mobile BI might affect an organisation’s performance. In terms of the research study, findings indicated that the main predictors of using mobile BI for organisational decision-making were based on the decision-maker’s attitudes towards use, and the behavioral intention to use. The study was able to confirm that the underlying purpose of using mobile BI by managers for decision-making was to enhance and improve managerial decision-making abilities. The data analysis demonstrated that a positive attitude towards mobile BI leads to its actual use. Going forward, it is anticipated that the perceived benefits of mobile BI technologies will likely mature over time as there is more innovation in both the mobile and BI-related technologies.

New thermoplastic polyurethane sheeting

arket leaders in the supply of quality cast acrylic products, Perspex South Africa, have proven their desire to push aside boundaries and exceed expectations in the development of their latest product. The unrelenting drive to produce a thermoplastic polyurethane sheeting that has the ability to outperform its competitors in durability, elasticity and resilience, has lead to the creation of their new product, aptly named LinaShield. Perspex SA’s innovative thinking, along with leading raw material manufacturers, has seen this eagerly anticipated product come to fruition. When thinking of the extremely harsh conditions that mining, transportation and farming industries have to constantly endure, Perspex SA knew they had to come up with a highly robust product that maintained optimal

performance in all kinds of circumstances. Features such as superb low-temperature impact strength, reduced vibration, elasticity in a broad temperature range and resistance to oils and greases, reveal Perspex SA’s efforts to create a product that aligned with the needs of such industries. A few key areas of focus for them when developing LinaShield, demanded the necessity to provide outstand-

ing resistance to abrasion, strokes and penetration of sharp objects. Displaying excellent resilience to such a variety of unforgiving forces has shown LinaShield to be perfectly suited to tough environments. Perspex SA has designed this new thermoplastic polyurethane sheeting to act as a coat of armour in protecting equipment like wear linings, vehicle linings, belts and conveyors. LinaShield boasts extreme versatility and flexibility, lending itself to a wide range of applications. Another benefit of LinaShield, notes Perspex SA, is that industries using heavy-duty equipment have noticed an increase in productivity, due to a significant reduction in maintenance downtime. Because this product doesn’t have any plasticizers, its longevity is enhanced, and so it outlasts conventional rubber-like materials. Enquiry no: 57

Maximise throughput and uptime

M

aximised throughput and uptime, with minimised costs, are the goals of all processing plants. Extensive research and smart engineering have resulted in the development of a hydrocyclone that can achieve up to 50% higher throughput capacity in comparison with competitor cyclones in the 26-inch diameter range due to its larger inlet and vortex finder configuration. The Cavex 700CVX hydrocyclone, with a smaller, more space efficient body, has a higher throughput than the Cavex 650CVX hydrocyclone making it attractive for new installations as well as retrofitting into existing cyclone clusters. This allows mine sites to increase capacity with minimal capital expenditure while maintaining a competitive advantage. Sheldon Gabriel, product manager cyclones of Weir Minerals Africa and Middle East, explains that the inclusion of a unique laminar spiral inlet in the Cavex 700CVX hydrocyclone is the secret behind the success of this new product. “As with all products we introduce to the market, the design is based on feedback from the market and intensive field testing. The result is a hydro-

cyclone that produces the desired results due to its large inlet and vortex finder configuration.” “It is important to note that the development of the Cavex 700CVX hydrocyclone was not based merely on a cone modification, but rather on an entirely new feed geometry that substantially increases hydraulic throughput capacity while minimising localised wear on the feed chamber and vortex finder,” says Gabriel. Conventional hydrocyclone geometry causes migration of unclassified solids into the overflow, which can result in valuable mineral losses. The laminar spiral inlet geometry design of the Cavex 700CVX hydrocyclone provides a natural flow path into the

hydrocyclone. Due to the fact that the shape has no sharp edges or corners, it readily allows the feed stream to blend smoothly and efficiently with the rotating slurry within the chamber. “When turbulence is reduced, sorting efficiency is naturally enhanced and fewer misplaced fines bypass to the underflow, with less coarse tramp material bypassing to the overflow. This is achieved by maximising the air core diameter created within the rotating mass of fluid in the hydrocyclone and results in reductions in overgrinding and circulating loads,” says Gabriel. Gabriel points out that in conventional hydrocyclones, slurry bursts into the cylinder with no flow control. The resultant turbulence is responsible for premature and localised wear of the liner walls causing inefficient classification and decreased wear life. By minimising flow resistance through the feed chamber, Cavex hydrocyclones are able to process substantially higher slurry volumes. The increased productivity effectively reduces the quantity of hydrocyclones required and reduces the energy Enquiry no: 58 required for the job.

ndustrial valve manufacturer Gunric Valves has achieved the highest level of safety, the SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level), for their Metal Seated Butterfly Valves. The SIL3 - for all electrical operated components that operate within a system in a plant, such as a refinery, - is assessed for safety and reliability as well as the impact on the system if it fails. This Certification enables Gunric Valves to offer the Oil, Gas and Water industries a guarantee that the Gunric Metal Seated Butterfly Valve will close, and will close safely. The Technology Localisation Implementation Unit (TLIU) assisted Gunric Valves in obtaining the SIL Certification IEC 601. The certification process took four months at a cost of half a million rand. major waterworks in South Africa is benefitting from the installation of Bredel APEX15 hose pumps from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group. The APEX pumps have been preferred over progressive cavity (PC) pumps in an application that sees metering of bentonite into the source water to help flocculation. Bentonite is a crystalline quartz (naturally occurring) clay product. The abrasive nature of the substance can cause costly damage to the PC pumps, a factor that is not encountered when using APEX technology. PC Storage Solutions SA was recently contracted to optimise the storage operations of citrus fruit distributer FPT at its Durban facility. The company provided a turnkey storage solution, which included the installation of its mobile racking solution, Movirack ,for two cold storage chambers in the harbour district for the storage of lemons, oranges and grapefruit prior to export. In addition to the fitment of the Movirack, the warehouse structure required structural modifications to configure it for mobile cold storage down to 0° Celsius. As the existing drive-in galvanised racking system formed the roof support, APC Storage Solutions SA cleverly engineered the Movirack

E

system within the constraints of the new structure, ensuring that the whole roof support was contained on the perimeter of the facility. APC Storage Solutions SA’s design utilised the existing structure to allow pallet placement on the support structure itself, thereby gaining important storage capacity. The structure’s aged floor was also unsuitable for cold storage applications, not satisfying the necessary Geotechnical report guaranteeing the integrity of the subsurface. APC Storage Solutions SA was thus required to engineer, design and supply a new reinforced sub-base and strip footing system, incorporating the company’s Movirack embedded rail system and new FM2 super-hardened floor, which could handle the stresses of cold storage applications and harsh material handling equipment movements. Each chamber was equipped with seven mobile racks, eight back-to-back bays deep, to accommodate over 1 200 pallets. Four levels of 2.2 metres in height gave a final storage height of over eight metres. The installation made provision for the addition of an eighth mobile base in each chamber, with the embedded rail system for these bases already installed. For six months of the year, in line with the seasonal citrus fruit produce it exports, FPT runs a non-stop, 24-hour day, seven-day week Enquiry no: 57 cold storage operation.

merson Process Management has introduced Smart Commissioning, a technology-enabled process that drastically reduces automation commissioning time and effort. Smart Commissioning helps automation projects meet strict and shifting deadlines by reducing trips to the field, eliminating tasks, and accommodating late project changes. Smart Automation Commissioning builds on advances made possible by the combination of the DeltaV distributed control system (DCS) Electronic Marshalling with CHARMs and AMS Device Manager software to remove automation from the critical path of projects With the release of version 13 software for the DeltaV DCS and AMS Suite, Smart Commissioning brings ease to automation project implementation. From the initial device connections to final system testing, users save money as they shave weeks off the project schedule by

reducing time spent on automation commissioning activities. Upon arrival at a project site, pre-tagged smart devices can be connected immediately to any channel in a nearby junction box -- no need to wait for wiring designs to be complete. Smart Commissioning also eliminates potential errors by automatically finding and identifying all smart devices, then binding them to the configuration. To further accelerate implementation, the device configuration is pushed to all devices based on pre-configured templates. Testing is easily and safely done from the control room by using digital communication, requiring no personnel in the field for confirmation. “With Smart Commissioning, members of the project team can more easily meet tight project timelines and are not hampered by late design changes,” said Mark Howard, vice president of project execution for Emerson Enquiry no: 58 Process Management."

particles and flocculation of the small particles to form larger flocs or aggregates. Bentonite is added when the water to be flocculated contains too few particles for effective flocculation. Several Umgeni Water plants have experienced difficulties with their PC pumps as a result of bentonite metering, which typically takes place around once a month on average. Upon start-up, the PC pumps will immediately run dry due to the properties of bentonite. Suction lines can sometimes become blocked and the pump stator is subject to damage. With this in mind, the introduction of bentonite metering processes at Umgeni Water’s Amanzimtoti waterworks, set the company

thinking about alternative pump technology. After a review of the market, the pump of choice proved to be a Bredel APEX15 hose pump from Watson-Marlow. The application at Amanzimtoti sees bags of bentonite offloaded into a 3000 litre holding tank and then mixed. Using the Bredel APEX pump running at less than 3 bar, the abrasive liquid is then pumped so that the solids are kept in suspension. Crucially, the two APEX15 hose pumps, can be reversed if blockages are encountered, then run in the correct direction again once clear. As a result, reliability has improved significantly at the Amanzimtoti plant in the three years since the pumps have been installed. Enquiry no: 56

profitability and a rapid return on investment.” The machine has four pre-programmable platform heights (46m, 41.2m, 36.6m and 30.5m). In addition to being wellsuited to fleet owners’ needs, this new and increasingly important feature also benefits rental companies by optimising returns on utilisation and consequently a reduction in total rental cost of ownership as they can charge a fixed rental rate according to height. This new model will without any doubt give rental companies looking to meet increasing demands in the 30m to 48m range, a competitive edge. “Goscor Access Rental has already purchased some of these machines with the first one starting work in Kwazulu-Natal and the second arrival going to the Gauteng region,” states Goscor Access Rental Managing Director, Dean Jones, adding that “the machines

have immediately proven to be an instant hit with our rental customers.” With a market-beating 340 kg load chart offering an impressive horizontal outreach of 21.34 m at 36.6m, one SX-150 unit provides two workers and their tools the ability to handle tasks that often require the support of several machines. The compact footprint, which is unique for a machine in this category, a minimal tail swing of 1.06m and unrestricted 340kg capacity across its full working envelope, makes the SX-150 in many cases a convenient and cost-effective alternative to truckmounted booms. The boom lift’s reduced dimensions also enable fast set-up and the machine is easily transportable via a standard trailer making it a quick cost-effective solution for urban jobsites, bridge and stadium inspections and maintenance. Market-beating stability at 48 metres working height

leet managers are often left in the dark regarding the status and performance of their vehicles while on the road. Exact positioning, ETAs and driver performance have not always been immediately available to managers. Leading telematics provider Skygistics has partnered with Garmin to provide fleet managers with real-time visibility of their vehicle assets, allowing them to monitor vehicle location and performance; increase management and logistics of deliveries; as well as enable fleet managers to send message instructions directly to the Garmin interface from a mobile application. The Skygistics Garmin FMI (Fleet Managers Interface) is integrated tracking, navigation and driver communication software that utilises Garmin Personal Navigation Devices as its interface, providing managers with complete control of their fleets. By incorporating cellular and satellite services, the system ensures realtime fleet management and network coverage for local and cross-border applications. The FMI assists managers in determining the most cost-effective routes for their operation, allowing them to

reduce operating expenditure in the face of rising fuel and toll costs and increased traffic volumes. Managers are able to predefine routes for each vehicle and receive real-time alerts should the driver deviate from the defined route. ETAs are updated every two minutes, allowing managers to make accurate logistical schedules. The solution also addresses multiple-destination fleets by providing drivers with a complete list of stops in a single screen. It can be programmed to automatically alert managers when the vehicle has arrived at the predefined stop. In addition to real-time tracking of driver location, the solution provides two-way communication between a manager and each vehicle in the fleet

using Garmin hardware. Fleet managers can now send customised, or predefined, text messages to prompt the driver to complete a job instruction. “Every message can be tracked with an audit trial,” says Henry Smith, Sales and Marketing Executive, Skygistics. “This allows managers to monitor which messages have been delivered, read and actioned according to the instructions”. Fleet managers can track the exact time and location each message was read. In addition to dispatch and navigational features, “the system provides a record of how the vehicle has been driven, allowing managers to isolate, and ultimately eliminate, inefficient and aggressive driving practices such as speeding, excessive idling, overrevving and hard-braking,” Smith continues. “Hours of service can also be automatically monitored, allowing more accurate and efficient vehicle maintenance.” The Skygistics Garmin FMI solution is suitable for all transport and fleetrelated operations including couriers, metred-taxis, towing companies and bulk delivery fleets. Rescuing mountain pass

he badly deteriorated gravel access route between Sani Pass, on the border of South Africa, and the town of Mokhotlong, winding through the picturesque Black Mountain Pass in the mountainous north eastern part of Lesotho was in desperate need of upgrading to a surfaced, all weather road. The notorious Sani Pass is the only vehicle route and trade link over the Drakensberg escarpment connecting KwaZulu-Natal with the mountainous Kingdom of Lesotho. Kaytech’s subsoil drainage systems were recommended for this challenging project. The contract to build the road to a highway standard was awarded by the Ministry of Public Works & Transport Lesotho to China Geo Engineering Corporation, with Aurecon Lesotho as consultants for the project.

This project has resulted in the installation of 25 000m each of Kaytech’s Flo-Drain and Geopipe. With the original design incorporating a conventional stone subsoil drainage system, it was soon realised that the poor quality, residual basalt subsoil, in conjunction with exorbitant transportation costs of stone to this remote site, called for an effective alternative. Engineers determined Flo-Drain and Geopipe M100R would be the ultimate

solution. Flo-Drain is a quality assured, prefabricated geocomposite drainage system that, together with Geopipe, is lightweight, flexible and easy to install. Manufactured from HDPE, Geopipe is ideally suited to fin drains like FloDrain as its 70% open area allows for a significant increase in the infiltration rate of water.

In fact, no other drainage pipes have an infiltration rate equivalent to that of Geopipe. It easily accommodates high localised flows and can tolerate extremely high stresses of overburden. It is so flexible that even under extreme conditions it may deform but will regain shape without breaking. Importantly for this project, located at an altitude of almost 3 000m where severe winter conditions prevail, Geopipe will not become brittle even at very low temperatures. The combination of these two Kaytech products is extremely effective in lowering the water table or intercepting seepage in a wide range of applications. This top quality subsoil drainage system, which was considerably quicker to install than a conventional system would have been requiring narrower trench excavation, provided our neighbouring country of Lesotho with several benefits including a 10% cost saving, valuable time saving and, significantly - since no special skills are required for its installation - the contractor was able to employ local Enquiry no: 62 labour.

Sarma quality wins the day

t is no secret that the readymix industry is growing in leaps and bounds and that more and more organizations are insisting on Sarma approved concrete for their construction sites. But a lesser known fact is behindthe-scenes work that is constantly being conducted by the Southern Africa Readymix Association (Sarma) to ensure international standards are adopted and used by its members, while simultaneously educating industry bodies and users about the need to insist on accredited readymix. “If South Africa is to progress as a modern society we need to uphold standards and constantly push the boundaries to ensure we are among the world leaders and are able to construct any type of structure with locally obtained skills and materials whenever it is required. We cannot and should not ever settle for anything but the best when it comes to building our nation,” says Johan van Wyk, Sarma general manager. He continues, “It is inconceivable that anybody would use a product that is not bound by any standards whatsoever, when there are accredited members that have to comply to

all manner of internationally accepted standards before they are allowed to sell a single cubic metre of readymix concrete. “That is why Sarma never stops working to engage with colleagues representing professional industries in civil engineering, architecture, quantity surveyors, project managers, as well as consulting, municipal and other technical disciplines that are required to specify concrete. Also roads agencies, and all tiers of Government need to be educated about the correct use of readymix concrete. “This year alone we have scored major success with the South African Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), several metropolitan municipalities, large civils engineering companies and a variety of other significant organizations specifying that only Sarma accredited readymix be used on their sites,” lauds Johan.

He explains that so far the Construction Industry Development Board (Cidb), Consulting Engineers SA (CESA), National Home Builders Registration Council (NBRC), SA Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE), National Laboratory Association (NLA) and many others have committed to work wih Sarma to encourage members to specify Sarma accredited concrete. Cesa has also inserted a readymix concrete accreditation module into its training courses. To crown what has been a busy year so far the association is also cleaning up readymix’s act by establishing a task team to clean up concrete spills on Gauteng’s roadways regardless of whether they were made by members or non-members. The programme will be evaluated for the next six months and if successful will be rolled out across the Enquiry no: 63 country.
