ecognising excellence in difficult economic times is a priority, and in keeping with this philosophy, Productivity SA recently awarded the local Pietermaritzburg site of H & M Roller Technologies (Pty) Ltd, not only the Regional Award in the Corporate Category, but also named them one of three winners of the National Corporate Sector category. In addition, H & M Rollers received the Chairman Award for Innovation. The history of H & M Rollers is one of hard work, growth and success. The company is a South African roller recovering company which was founded in association with Hannecard NV of Belgium and Mitex Gummiwerke GmbH of Germany, and currently has four divisions – Vereeniging in Gauteng; Paper Division and Millroom Division, Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal and Parow in the Cape. The Pietermaritzburg facility is

home to the specialist Paper Division which supplies into the paper mills throughout South Africa and beyond the borders into Africa. Its Millroom Division produces all the rubber compounds for the Group, specialising in colour compounding of a wide range of polymers from natural rubbers through to HNBRs to silicones. In addition, the Division mixes and sells non-exclusive rubber compounds to outside customers. This facility also houses a centralised Technical Department managed by its Chief Chemist and the Divisional Manager for the Mill Room, who between them, ensure the latest compounds are produced and the necessary testing of rubber compounds and quality is constantly monitored. The site also houses its export product under the name, The Moseley Rubber Company which manufactures rubber blankets for the

production of extensible papers which are shipped all over the world and sells rubber sleeves for Flovac suction units. In addition, H&M Tecnocoat (Pty) Ltd offers an on-site and in-factory thermal spray metal coating service for the repair and refurbishing of rollers and other machine components. The site is covered by its Quality Management System, ISO 9001:2008, to address quality issues. According to Sue Supasar (Divisional Manager of the Millroom), the site was approached by Productivity SA about 2½ years ago. At the same time, the company was in the process of researching the concept of ‘lean manufacturing’ and the tie in between the two made sense. Productivity SA’s Work Place Challenge Programme was implemented at the site in 2012 focusing on goal alignment, 5S, teamwork and leadership to create a culture of continuous improvement. “Initially, it presented a challenge, as it required a major buy-in from staff. However, as the benefits became obvious to all, so attitudes began to change and the programme was run with such success, that the results speak for themselves”, she continued. In fact, over the period 2013 to 2015, the reject rate decreased from 4.8% to just 1.2%, sales growth increased from 6% to 14.8% and

overall production efficiencies achieved greater than 90% for 2013/4 and 2014/5. The company received the Innovation Award for the establishment of their own carbon black mixing facility. Here the focus is on producing black compounds that require specialised technology. A detailed work breakdown structure for the implementation of the facility was generated and the Millroom Division consisting of the Millroom team, Technical team and shop floor staff of H&M Rollers pioneered the implementation of the inhouse Carbon Black Mixing Facility.

CARBON BLACK PROJECT The Carbon Black project has been successfully implemented and now mixes the majority of compounds under direct control and assurance of quality which were previously outsourced. The Carbon Black Project resulted in cost savings of R1, 3 million from 2013 to 2015. The resulting benefits are lower mixing temperatures, better retention of physical properties, smaller batch weights and new global technological formulations which require less heat input and on – site technical support. In the words of Bongani Coka, CEO of Productivity SA: “The more productive an economy is, the more competitive it is in global markets, often causing unemployment rates to fall. The more productive an enterprise is, the more income it can generate and allocate to new investments and creating new jobs. Therefore, productivity is not only a vital indicator of where to invest and create more jobs, but it is also the source of funds for creating new jobs and redeploying people.” Enquiry No: 1

Gas company opens Hammarsdale depot

I

ncreased business opportunities have spurred liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplier and distributor, Reatile Gaz, to add KwaZulu-Natal to its national footprint with the opening of a new depot in Hammarsdale. The modern plant and cylinder-filling facility will act as a distribution facility, supplying cylinders in various sizes to customers and will also provide back-up bulk storage for the benefit of bulk customers. The plant currently has a storage capacity of 45 000 litres of LPG and approximately 400 cylinders in various sizes can be filled per eight hour shift. The company has been monitoring the economic growth of KwaZulu-Natal closely

and believes the idea to develop a gas supply market within a growing region makes good business sense. An ever-increasing and diverse customer base in the province, including small to medium-sized enterprises and major national companies across South Africa, emerged as one of the business imperatives. Durban was identified as a strategic link between Eastern Cape and Gauteng where Reatile Gaz already has an established presence in the market. The geographical positioning of the depot in Hammarsdale is a plus factor. Engen Petroleum, a major shareholder of Reatile Gaz, has a well-established and efficient refinery in the province from which

a substantial portion of Reatile Gaz’s LPG supply is sourced. Hence, the location of the refinery is seen as a strategic advantage to Reatile Gaz and further motivated the company’s substantial investment in the region. “A national footprint enables us to enhance our service to companies that have multiple sites. Such companies benefit from group advantages such as pricing and resource allocation,” said Simphiwe Mehlomakulu, Reatile Gaz Chairperson. “Our goal is to always offer tailor-made solutions to cater for individual customer requirements and we therefore, encourage our customers to be forthcoming with their specific expectations from Reatile Gaz.”

At the opening were: from left: Roger Rudd: General Manager, Reatile Gaz (Pty) Ltd; Simphiwe Mehlomakulu, Reatile Gaz Chairman; Muzi Mkhize: Chief Director of Hydrocarbons, Department of Energy, South Africa; Councillor Lindiwe Mhlongo-Ntaka; Sizwe Nkonde: General Manager Packaged Gases, Air Products South Africa (Pty) Ltd and Shepherd Shonhiwa, ‎Managing Director at Egoli Gas (Pty) Ltd

Walking tall in tough times

FE International, the group that includes South Africa’s leading carpet brand, Van Dyck, as well as PFE Extrusion and tyre recyclers, Mathe Group, will be putting its best foot forward despite tough economic times expected in 2016. “Business investment remains weak, reflecting slow economic growth coupled with regulatory uncertainty. Residential construction will continue to be held back by weak demand and tighter lending conditions,” Zarrebini said of 2016. However, tough times were not new, he stressed. In order to cater for economic downturn, Hammarsdale-based PFE Extrusion recently installed heat setting and twisting machinery to complement its yarn extrusion facility. This is expected to reduce reliance on imported raw materials whilst also enabling it to develop additional and different yarn systems for use in soft flooring. “Future investment at PFE Extrusion is certainly on the cards and our long term strategy is to ensure that all primary raw materials used by Van Dyck will be sourced eventually from PFE Extrusion,” he added. Zarrebini said that the new Mathe Group tyre recycling facility in Hammarsdale, in which PFE International is a joint venture partner, would also unlock opportunities during 2016. This is one of the largest and most modern plants in South Africa and manufactures rubber crumb from recycled tyres. A large portion of output goes to Van Dyck for the manufacture of acoustic underlays. Increased output will allow Van Dyck to increase its capacity of acoustic products manufactured Enquiry No: 3 for export.

almost 9 000, and more than doubling the number of LTE/4G to 2 600. This focus on network investment is continuing into Vodacom’s 2015-2016 financial year, and will result in more than R1 billion being spent in KwaZulu-Natal to

expand coverage, increase network capability and speed. Steven Barnwell, Vodacom’s newly appointed Managing Executive for the province explained: “I am pleased to announce that over R1 billion has been earmarked for network investment in the province in the current financial year. " "The bulk of the money will be spent on adding new base stations and connecting sites with our own high-speed transmission. We will also deploy 550 kilometers of fibre in order to drive fibre to the home and fibre to the business in the province.” “This year we’re planning to add

546 radio base station sites, comprising of 112 new sites, upgrade of 170 3G sites and 264 LTE/4G sites." "On a practical basis, this means that we’ll be bringing faster data services to tens of thousands of people who currently only have voice services and EDGE data services. On top of this, the upgrade will increase network capacity, provide improved voice quality and enhanced mobile data speeds in major metro areas including eThekwini, Pietermaritzburg, Newcastle, Richards Bay and small towns such as Dundee, Charlestown, Peacetown and New Hanover Town by the end of March 2016. 49 sites

in rural areas will also be developed.” Radio base stations are sites that enable mobile phones to work. As at the end of August 2015, Vodacom KwaZulu-Natal had 2634 2G sites and 555 LTE sites. By March next year and through the 2015/2016 network investment programme, the company will have increased these numbers significantly. In addition to the major increase in investment in base stations, the company will also be ramping up investment in the core network. Barnwell said 83% of local Vodacom sites are connected by their own high speed Enquiry No: 7 transmission network.

ccording to the latest Investment Property Databank (IPD) South Africa Annual Property Index, the industrial property sector is currently the top performing property sector in South Africa, and was one the best performing property sectors during 2014. Elias Tzouvanni, Director of Nexus Property Group, says industrial property in KwaZulu-Natal is highly sought-after and currently outweighs the supply, with industrial property in Durban fetching some of the highest rates per square meter in the country, and promising positive and sustainable returns. According to Tzouvanni, there is a limited amount of suitable industrial space currently available for development in the traditional industrial nodes. New areas, such as Cornubia industrial Estate, situated between Ballito and Umhlanga in KwaZuluNatal, are becoming increasingly popular with tenants and end users. “Some of the largest available development land remaining in Cornubia Industrial Estate was recently released to the market, with almost 25 000m² of the total 10 hec-

tares of this development land already sold off. This demonstrates the high demand for industrial property situated in close proximity to the relocated Durban airport. “This is the first time in many years that land of this size has become available so close to an international airport. Vacant and available industrial property and land around South Africa’s international airports is tremendously scarce, and it is expected that the demand will continue. Smaller portions of the development are avail-

able as per the proposed subdivision and can be bought separately. The remaining erven range in size, from 7 000m² to 18 000m², and can span up to 55 000m² if left consolidated.” Tzouvanni adds that industrial land in the Cornubia area has attracted investment from several national listed and private companies. He adds that as the Durban business district slowly shifts from the CBD towards the Umhlanga Ridge and Balito area, so has the need for vacant commerEnquiry No: 8 cial and industrial land.

Hatch Goba also clinched the SAICE Durban Branch Award for Technical Excellence. In addition, it scooped a prestigious Fulton Award in the category ‘Civil engineering structure over R100 million’. The project involved the entire bridge deck built from one end of the structure, as opposed to the traditional segmental construction method whereby a bridge is built one span at a time. The application of this innovative technology had a substantial impact on the construction requirements, as

well as minimising traffic disruption. The overall bridge works were 1 200m long, with a surface area of 14 000 m². The roadworks alone comprised 56 000 m² of asphalt, while the bulk earthworks totalled 100 000 m³of cut material and 200 000 m³ of fill material. Another major challenge was posed by the fact that a large quantity of existing services not only had to be relocated, but had to be searched for and identified. Enquiry No: 9

Engen Petroleum Lubricants Division

ngen has a 118 year history in South Africa, dating from its establishment as "Vacuum Oil" in Cape Town in 1897, the first Oil Company in South Africa. The company eventually became part of the US-based Mobil Corporation. There is a proud history of dynamic growth since those early days. The enterprise grew rapidly through a series of amalgamations and name changes over the years, including the 1989 acquisition of Mobil’s interests by Gencor, to create the largest energy group in Southern Africa. In May 1990, the company was renamed Engen and in 1992, Engen Limited, was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The company was de-listed in December 1998 when it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) the Malaysian National Oil Company.

ACCELERATING FORWARD Today PETRONAS holds 80% of the equity in Engen and Pembani Group (Pty) Ltd. holds the balance. PETRONAS is one of the leading oil and gas multinationals in the world. The company undertakes the exploration, development, production, refining, storage, transportation, and distribution of oil, gas and petrochemical products around the world. EXPANDING OFFERING Engen has also made some exciting new introductions to the lubricants product offering. These include:

To ensure that Engen Petroleum remains at the forefront of the lubricants industry in Sub Saharan Africa, it is necessary to continuously evolve and modernise our product offering to remain relative to our consumers requirements. We also continuously upgrade and enhance production capacity to enable the company to meet its growing business footprint across the continent. With this in mind, Engen Petroleum has recently completed the commissioning of a state of the art high speed 500 ml and 1 litre filling line at its LOBP in Durban that significantly increases production capacity with higher filling speeds. Prior to the decision to invest in this new production line, extensive research was done to understand the dynamics of shifting production from the 500ml tin container to the 500ml plastic container. The feedback from our stakeholders showed overwhelming support for the move. This feedback together with industry trends leaning towards the discontinuing of tin containers, the need for added capacity and the desire to meet our customers evolving buying requirements led to the decision to move forward with our investment in the new filling line.

PLI continues to expand its global business through aggressive growth strategies, an expanding product line supported by state of the art technology and key relationships with global OEM's such as Mercedes-Benz, FIAT, Chrysler, Iveco and many more. Engen Petroleum is a leading provider of lubricants to the South African market. We have grown up in and remained committed to South Africa and as such our knowledge of the local conditions has enabled us to formulate, test and blend our own products to meet the harsh African environment. Our knowledge and drive for success is one of the reasons that global players have formed relationships with us over the years.

Accredited by CCMA for non-party disputes T he Bargaining Council for the Civil Engineering Industry (BCCEI) is now accredited by the CCMA to handle all its disputes. This provides a number of benefits to all stakeholders. According to Merle Denson, senior case management officer at BCCEI, the accreditation in essence means that companies that are not members of the employer organisation SAFCEC (South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors) or employees who are not members of BCAWU (Building, Construction and Allied Workers Union) or NUM (National Union of Mineworkers), but fall within the civil engineering industry will now derive the same advantages as those companies and employees who are members of these entities. Effective from 1 September 2015, the accreditation means that companies and employees no longer have to go directly to the CCMA. “Apart from the time saving benefits

this offers stakeholders, they are now able to access a panel of skilled professional commissioners with industry specific experience at the BCCEI. Being able to leverage the expertise and knowledge of the panel members will provide stakeholders with a strong and reliable arsenal,” says Denson. As a completely independent statutory body, the BCCEI provides an unbiased and impartial service to the civil engineering sector. With an extensive reference base across all modalities within the civil engineering sector, BCCEI is able to assist parties with direction and support in line with industry specific standards and guidelines. Denson points out that although the majority of the cases in the Johannesburg, Pretoria and Vanderbijlpark area will be heard at BCCEI’s state of the art facility in Bedfordview, a skilled CCMA accredited commissioner will be appointed to facilitate the process where this is not feasible or within other regions.

These exceptions would include large long term multi-disciplinary projects where specific site agreements are applied, like Medupi and Kusile, and where party and non-party disputes arise. In this instance, disputes will be heard on site. Denson cautions that, irrespective of the hearing venue, parties need to be aware that once arbitration awards have been made they are final and binding. “Adding to the time savings applied with the BCCEI’s accreditation, we are able to provide further time saving benefits by allowing employers, at a minimal cost, to refer an

This process is intended to take the place of a disciplinary enquiry and takes the hearing straight to arbitration, which is both cost effective and time saving for the parties and it means that the matter cannot be referred to the council for conciliation,” Denson says. “Other benefits to an inquiry by arbitrator process include the fact that the hearing can be heard at the employer’s premises, at a date and time chosen by the parties and the commissioner can also be chosen by party consent, making the outcome final and binding and if any party is dissatisfied with the outcome, the award can be taken on review to the Labour Court,” she continues. “For full details on other BCCEI services, we suggest that parties refer to the BCCEI’s website,” Denson concludes. Rise in qualifications fraud - hard fact

t was inaccurate to claim that the increase in qualifications fraud in South Africa simply reflected an intensified effort to expose qualifications fraudster as Acting Cabinet Spokesperson Phumla Williams claimed in a recent statement. Kirsten Halcrow, CEO of EMPS, SA’s oldest background screening company said the numbers told a different story. There was in fact a very real increase in qualifications fraud which was clearly shown by the percentage increase in fraudsters who were exposed. Williams said the increase in the numbers (of qualifications fraudsters) was not a reflection that the public and private sectors were “littered” with fake qualifications‚ but it was an indication that “as a country we are striving towards dealing with the few people who use fake and fraudulent qualifications.”

“So far this year 7,62% of all qualifications verified by our company turned out to be “problematic”. This compared with a 6,8% average for last year.” “People using fake qualifications are damaging the credibility and reputation of institutions of higher learning. The incidents of misrepresentation are serious and will not be tolerated in our country as they impact negatively on the credibility of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Williams added that faking academic qualification is a criminal offence which should be dealt with by all the employers. Halcrow said rather than trying to put a good face on qualifications fraud, government should concentrate on weeding out the many rotten apples that were still Enquiry No: 12 hanging around.

ika is opening its first concrete admixture and mortar production facilities in Nigeria and Ivory Coast. The global speciality chemicals company has established new subsidiaries in Ethiopia and Tanzania to participate in the growing markets in the Sub-Saharan region. Thus Sika continues its dedicated and successful expansion strategy and is enlarging its presence to sixteen countries on the African continent. Sika established the subsidiary in Nigeria and Ivory Coast in 2014 and is now in Lagos and Abidjan, investing in local production facilities for high-quality concrete admixtures and mortars to supply the booming construction, refurbishment and maintenance markets in both countries. Many international and medium-sized local contractors working on big oil & gas, infrastructure, commercial and residential projects represent a large customer potential. Paul Schuler, Sika Regional Manager EMEA, emphasized the importance of Sika’s expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa: “Our new production facilities in Nigeria and Ivory Coast and our new subsidiaries in Tanzania and Ethiopia represent another milestone in the consequent execution of Sika’s Strategy 2018. With the latest investments we will further accelerate our growth in SubSaharan Africa and increase Sika’s market share. Gas crucial to SA growth

atural gas must play a major role in SA’s future energy mix, according to a new report from Econometrix. “Gas is necessary for South Africa to meet its target growth rates and political, economic and social objectives,” says Econometrix MD Rob Jeffrey. “There should be a national plan to substantially increase the use of gas.” Creating a natural gas sector would unlock billions of rands of investment while stimulating new industries and skilled job creation. Combined with the right policies, an additional 8,600 MW of electric-

ity from gas could see GDP grow by R645bn, with the creation of up to 1,720,000 jobs, according to the Econometrix report: ‘The future role of gas in SA’s power and industrial development mix’. The report was commissioned by Delta Natural Gas, a gas company started by South African industrialist Aldworth Mbalati in 2014. “Power generation with gas is a proven technology which contributes to improving grid stability whilst reducing South Africa’s carbon emissions,” Mbalati said. “Gas must be an essential part of whatever energy mix SA chooses, and it forms the

basis of industrial development in its own right.” Gas is the cheapest alternative to coal and nuclear, offering security of supply at competitive prices, Econometrix said. It would supply reliable power for peak demand periods or when renewables are not generating electricity, and adds to the essential reserve capacity. It was technically and commercially feasible to rapidly start gasfuelled power generation at Coega in the Eastern Cape, and Saldanha Bay or Mossel Bay in the Western Cape. Other potential locations are Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal,

and Sishen in the Northern Cape. Mbombela in Mpumalanga has potential to be supplied by pipeline from Mozambique. For each location, developing a natural gas industry with R15bn annual turnover could see downstream annual turnover up to R50bn, with R26bn total added economic value. Average upstream and downstream potential employment created could peak at 70,000 during the mature phase of the project’s life, Econometrix said. Other significant economic benefits including R2bn savings from diesel imports, increased tax revenue,

and curtailment of future electricity price increases – all with a positive impact on the fiscus. “Gas must play an important role in the energy mix going forward if South Africa is to meet its economic, political and social objectives of reducing poverty, reducing inequality and raising the standard of living of all its citizens,” Jeffrey said. Beating the blackout blues with natural gas

C

ommunications giant MTN has embarked on a project to ensure its operations are impervious to the variations of municipal electricity supply with a ground breaking natural gas project. Master Power Technologies has been tasked with the implementation and maintenance of the gas power project. Dave Warren, senior sales engineer at Master Power Technologies explains that the larger MTN office blocks, switches and exchanges consume large amounts of municipal power for lighting, heating, and ventilation and transmission equipment. However, in Gauteng and other major centres, Egoli and Reatile gas have natural methane gas available via the Sasol line from Mozambique. This gas is available for commerce and industry use. Tri-generation, which utilizes gas to produce electricity and utilizes the engine waste heat to either generate hot water or take the hot water through a heat absorption process to produce chilled water are employed to reduce the running cost significantly. “The major benefit of moving to gas as a utility is that MTN will be able to run independently of Municipal power and will therefore not be affected by rolling black outs and load shedding in future.” Once up and running, the gas generator sets Master Power is

installing will operate 24/7 as base load units. Master Power is able to offer customers gas generator systems ranging from 15kW up to 50MW (while meeting higher demand through multiple set configurations) for base load operations. Due to the abundance of dry (90%) methane gas in Africa and the surrounding oceans, Master Power presently focuses on products that burn this composition most efficiently. Traditionally, gas power generation solutions convert only about 40% of the energy in the gas source to electrical power, the remaining energy is lost as wasted heat. However, heat recovery systems can be fitted that will provide heating and ventilation without using any of South Africa’s scarce, and now expensive municipal power supplies. The systems Master Power is installing for their customers are based on designs and installations as found in Europe and many western world countries. Gas is abundant and office or industrial heating is essential in the daily work place. In the African context, the heating need becomes a cooling requirement and chiller plants take the place of heating units. “MTN is in the fortunate situation that by increasing its power generating efficiency from 40% to about 90% by recovering heat from the generator. MTN will therefore be able to reduce the cents/kW/hour by over 50%. The complete Tri-generation package delivers cheaper power than supplied by the local Municipality” Two major MTN sites were converted to gas and were operational as from December 2014, while the waste heat recovery is due to come online in September 2015. More sites will be converted during the course of 2015. Enquiry No: 17

Torrefied biomass fuel for boilers

A

s the price of biomass fuels is becoming more competitive with traditional fuels such as coal, oil and gas, the need for boilers to fire biomass fuels is steadily increasing. To meet this need and the growing demand for a cleaner and more sustainable environment, and to verify boiler design and combustion parameters, John Thompson, has, in the past few years, carried out a series of tests firing a variety of biomass fuels on sites and on the boiler installed in their Boiler Development and Training Centre. These fuels included: woodpellets, wood-chips, wood-pucks, grape pomace, nut shells, sunflower seed husks, corncobs, dried-hops and torrefied biomass. More recently, in an exciting joint development project, John Thompson and a technology partner are working together in the rolling out of largescale production of torrefied material, a form of charcoal. The torrefied material is produced from woody biomass by controlled

pyrolysis to produce a friable material that can easily be pelletized. This product has a calorific value and volatile content comparable to coal, but contains zero sulphur and has a lower ash content. Torrefaction provides a method to beneficiate woodchips and other woody biomass as a fuel by increasing the energy density of the material by a factor around 3. This reduces the transport cost to move renewable biomass fuels over long distances from source to end-users.

The technology partner has achieved an important breakthrough by developing a continuous process for production of torrefied material, in place of the “stop-start” batch-process applied until now. This significant advance enables large-scale production of torrefied material, greatly enhancing its viability as an alternative fuel to coal for industrial boilers such as John Thompson’s Europac package firetube and MicroGen cogeneration watertube designs. The aim of the joint project is to ramp up and accelerate production of torrefied material for extensive use in industry for generation of process steam. John Thompson’s role in the partnership is to design and manufacture larger scale production plants at their Bellville Works, following on the earlier establishment of their partner’s pilot plant in which the effectiveness of its continuous production process was Enquiry No: 19 demonstrated.

SA’s first jetting/vacuum combi truck with water recycling capabilities

I

FAT Environmental Technology Forum Africa presented the ideal platform for Goscor Cleaning Equipment - part of the Goscor Group of Companies - to launch two vacuum trucks and a Mobile Vacuum Trailer built by local specialist vacuum manufacturer, Highpoint Vacuum. The HPVR-1000 Jetting/Vacuum combination truck with a unique water recycling capability is purpose-built for cleaning sewerage and storm water drains. The HPVR-1000 recycler’s impressive jetting and vacuum capacities of up to 500 litres per minute at 200 bar and 3 200 cubic metres per hour respectively, make light work of unclogging sand, silt and foreign materials from storm water drains. “We designed and manufactured this highly specialised vehicle locally with the exception of the recycling system which we sourced from Dietmar Kaiser, a market leader in this field

based in Lichtenstein,” states Highpoint Vacuum CEO David Gade. Explaining how the recycling process works, Gade says that once the vacuumed (dirty) water settles in the vacuum tank, it is filtered and foreign matter is removed by the recycling system. Water loss is minimal during this continuous process and close to 100% of the water is recaptured for re-use in the jetting process. Gregory Venter, General Manager at Goscor Cleaning Equipment is extremely excited about introducing this new recycler into the local market. “Recycling jetting water can save up to a remarkable 20 million litres of clean water per annum. In addition, the machine’s capac-

ity to hold 6000 litres of clean water saves fuel and time and substantially improves productivity as work is no longer interrupted by water collection. This innovation is a tremendous scoop for South Africa and it opens up great opportunities for emerging contractors.” He adds that the recycling system carries a 12 month warranty. The versatile truck can also be used for normal vacuuming or jetting thanks to a partition between the recycling section and the vacuum tank. Enquiry No: 20

MC, the world’s leading provider of pneumatics, has revealed its diverse range of product solutions for original equipment manufacturers and end users. The company boasts a wide range of components to cover every angle of the packaging industry, providing the full solution for customers in the packaging industry. “We understand that vertical integration is key and deliver an excellent price-performance ratio, with great availability guaranteed thanks to our multi-site manufacturing capability throughout Europe including Germany, UK, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic” says Johan Bester (pictured), Head of Sales for the South African operation. “We have a broad range of ionizers and temperature control devices, for original equipment manufacturers. And for end users and OEMs, we can offer our range of solutions that comply with international standards” adds Bester.

The company also supplies a trio of new ionizers which comply with safety regulations, that help to quickly and effectively breakdown static electricity; the IZS41 has an optional feedback sensor, the standard IZS40 features an easy on/off operation and the IZS42 dual AC design, minimises electrostatic build-up on workpieces. Highlighting safety abilities is the SMC’s 3/2 port valve series. The VP544-X538 and VP744-X538 are designed to be used in the category 4 functional safety systems of ISO 13849. These valves feature an integrated valve spool monitoring system that enables the spool slider position to be detected and confirmed. In terms of cooling, the new energy saving HRS thermo-chiller series provides customers with a suitable option. With a lightweight, space saving design, the HRS offers market

n the hospitality industry where room occupancy rates directly correlate with profitability, it’s hard to put a cap on energy use – the guest’s comfort is of prime concern. However, as tourism in South Africa flags, there is mounting pressure on this sector to conserve energy and cut costs. To balance cost and comfort imperatives, smart cost-effective technology that can easily be fitted into the existing York Console air conditioning units so popular in the sector – are proving their worth. This is according to Neil Cameron, GM: Johnson Controls Building Efficiency, Systems & Service: Africa. The no-volt relay switch, installed on the air conditioning unit’s control panel, allows hotel managers to switch air conditioning units off and room occupants, if they feel the need, to switch them back on. The benefits: significant energy savings and happy guests. While these switches have been available for some time as addi-

tional feature options when purchasing the York Console units and as retrofit options, they have never been more essential. Energy costs, which include Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), can account for up to 40% of facility costs. As energy costs continue to rise in South Africa, it’s becoming a priority target for management. With ongoing load shedding, more owners and managers are also conscious of the need to do their part to lower stress on the grid. The implementation of a simple energy efficient solution like the no-volt relay switch can help control rising energy costs, reduce environmental footprints, and increase the value and competitiveness of buildings – and Enquiry No: 25 guest offers.

rina Solar Limited, a global leader in photovoltaic modules, solutions and services, announced recently that its modules are powering the 2015 Norman Foster Solar Award winning Plus Energy Building building, the headquarters of Cavigelli Ingenieure AG in Ilanz, Switzerland. The “Monolith” building hosts a 26.8 kWh east-west oriented PV system. The systems features Trina Solar PC05A polycrystalline modules, produces 30,000 kWh per year and forms a key part of this innovative example of 21st century solar architecture. The architects incorporated an array of energy smart design features including passive solar shading through larch louvers sun shades, 50 cm walls with cutting edge insulation technology, geothermal heat pumps, Misapor lightweight foam glass aggregate concrete, air circulation systems,

A++ electrical appliances and 91% LED lighting. With its high efficiency, the building produces 238% of its yearly electric power and heating needs, allowing both self-consumption of power as well as the use of excess power for sales to the grid. The east-west solar system maximises the building’s solar power produc-

tion during the working day, offering the most efficient solution for long-term self-consumption of power. “An important consideration for us in selecting Trina Solar’s modules was their strong track record of durability in tough winter conditions – as winter is nearly half the year in the alpine Surselva region,” said Linus Weishaupt of the architecture firm, Vincenz Weishaupt. The new office building was conceived to be modern, sustainable and comfortable for the 24 team members to work in. The Norman Foster Solar Prize is given annually to a solar powered building offering architectural inspiration for all. Award winners are not only energy positive, but examples of clever design and well-integrated architectural solutions for the entire building envelope. Enquiry No: 27

Power solutions for reliability and continuity

L

egrand’s power solutions ensure protection of electrical equipment and continuity of service during planned and unexpected power outages. “These modular systems include certified low emission (CLE) cast resin transformers, busbar trunkings, enclosures for power switchgear and controlgear assemblies, as well as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units,” states Marc Naidoo, projects and technical co-ordinator, Legrand SA. “An important advantage of selecting Legrand components for efficient, safe and flexible power distribution, is the immediate integration between the company’s busbar trunking systems, cast resin transformers and XL³ cabinets.” “All Legrand power solutions systems encompass the latest technology for energy efficiency, quality power supply, optimum safety and enhanced aesthetics.” Legrand’s environmentally friendly, dry type cast resin transformers,

transfer electrical power between two different voltage systems at the same frequency, with low environmental impact. These HV/ LV transformers offer significant savings on electricity costs and can reduce electricity consumption by up to 20% during off-peak activity. The absence of flammable insulation liquids, the use of selfextinguishing materials exempt of toxic gas emissions, reduced noise levels and low electromagnetic emissions, ensure enhanced environmental protection in all installations. Legrand’s standard distribution transformers have rated power between 100 and 3 150 kVA, primary rated voltage up to 36 kV and sec-

ondary rated voltage up to 433 V. Special transformers have rated power up to 20 000 kVA, primary rated voltage up to 36 kVA and secondary rated voltage on request. Unlike oil transformers, these cast resin units, with reduced overall size dimensions, can be installed inside buildings and do not require additional building structures. This means optimum flexibility in any environment. Because no cooling fluids are necessary, maintenance costs are minimised. For climate conditions these transformers can withstand severe conditions - E2 - environmental class, C2 - climatic class, F1-fire-behaviour class. Legrand transformers are enhanced by prefabricated busbar trunking systems, which provide synergy for a direct connection. These busbar trunking systems, with minimum overall dimensions, provide flexibility in all areas of an installation, including confined spaces.

High viscosity cooked starch no problem

witching from progressive cavity (PC) pumps to a MasoSine pump from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group has overcome a long-standing issue for a leading paper mill based in South Africa – that of viscosity. The cooked starch used to gloss paper at the mill offers viscosity of 15,000 cP at 90°C. Adding to the challenge, the starch tends to crystalise when it comes into contact with the atmosphere or if the temperature drops below 30°C. The requirement at the paper mill is to pump the starch (both industrial and food quality types, depending on the application) from a boiler tank to the paper machine, where it is sprayed on to the paper via nozzles. As a

result, consistent and reliable pumping at 15,000 l/h is paramount. Around two years ago, the mill replaced its existing PC pumps with a MasoSine SPS250 sine pump, and it has been running successfully ever since. In the case of highly viscous products, MasoSine pumps are particularly impressive because there is very little internal friction and minimal fluid deformation, making them more efficient than rotary pump principles.

Excellent power density is another factor that makes sine pumps ideal for the transport of viscous fluid. Therefore the MasoSine pumps usually

require less electrical power for the same application especially with high viscous products. This results in the usage of a smaller motor than other pump principles which leads to less

he requirements for spray nozzles used in pollution control applications are extensive and include precise performance, trouble free operation and long service life. Spraying Systems Co. offers a wide range of spray technology for quench, FGD, mist elimination washing, gas cooling, SCR NOx reduction and chemical injection. These range from SpiralJet nozzles producing fine drops for gas – liquid contact to ensure effective mass transfer, to the range of Nitride – bonded silicon carbide nozzles most widely used in Flue Gas Desulpherazation for spraying line slurries, Spraying Systems Co has an unmatched range of gas treatment products. Uneven cleaning of mist eliminator equipment has serious consequences and yet is a fairly common problem. Hard residue often forms on the chevrons, reducing the area for the gas to pass through. These restricted openings will ultimately compromise the performance of the scrubber and the mist eliminator. One of the best ways to avoid build-up is to use non-clog Maximum free passage FullJet spray nozzles for washdown that provide even, thorough cleaning of each chevron. Spraying Systems offers the nozzles of

choice in gas conditioning with the FloMax A Series nozzles .These dual fluid nozzles outperform all others when it comes to drop size, evaporation, spray pattern uniformity and efficiency. As a result, FloMax nozzles are the key component in the company’s automated gas conditioning system. The turnkey system from AutoJet Technologies, the systems division of Spraying Systems Co., optimizes the performance of FloMax nozzles and controls all other system components including pumps, sensors and other hydraulic and pneumatic components. The AutoJet Spray Controller monitors and automatically adjusts the closed-loop system. Precise measurement of consumable fuels

obold Instrumentation, represented in K South Africa by Instrotech – a Comtest Group company, was asked to look into, and supply a solution to an on-going “headache” for an established Japanese automotive company – how to accurately record the exact quantity of fuel received on-site, daily. One of the most important consumables is fuel, both gasoline and diesel. These fuels are not only used for car testing, but also for utility purposes like fork-lifts, emergency electric generator, inter-plant transportation, etc. The flow and level metering of the fluids, had always been of concern to management. The automotive company routinely purchases fuel, which arrives at the plant site by fuel truck. It is unloaded and stored in several dedicated storage tanks. The existing gear flow meters had been run-

ning for more than 10 years. The level meters were even more traditional, using only mechanical floats and simple “onthe-tank-side” scale. Kobold’s aim was to provide the automotive company with more accurate measurement, while minimizing human error and providing on-line data acquisition, which also generates a separate report for management use. In order to improve the quality of measurement, Kobold also urged their distributor to provide the customer with adequate air eliminating units, which resulted in the entire flow metering piping system being modified. Kobold proposed using their TME coriolis mass flow meters and NMC capacitance level transmitters, integrated with a PC-based centralized data acquisition unit, to be located in Enquiry No: 32 the Logistics Room.

Minimising the effects of acid mine drainage

T

he harmful effects of acid mine drainage on the environment are being successfully combatted by a large acid mine drainage plant in Germiston, Gauteng, which contains a comprehensive mixing system developed by mixer manufacturer Mixtec. The acid mine drainage plant consists of a combination of 53 specialised Mixtec mixers, which are in turn individually powered by the same amount of gearboxes manufactured and supplied by leading drive engineering company SEW-Eurodrive. Mixtec sales manager Brian Paxton says that the agitators’ role in the process can be split into different sections. “In simple terms, the first is the make-up of lime into a slurry, which is in turn introduced to reaction vessels where

the lime slurry comes into contact with the acid mine drainage. By mixing the lime slurry with the acid mine water in this area, the lime reacts with the acid to cause a neutralising effect.” The bi-product produced is Gypsum, a soft sulphate mineral composed of calcium sulphate dihydrate, which can be used as a fertiliser, and is the main constituent in many forms of plaster and chalk. The mixing system had to be designed to accommodate the highly-corrosive pH levels found in water contaminated by acid mine drainage. The gearboxes were covered with an OS2 paint work. The 210 μm paint work is specially-designed for acidic environments. Viton seals were also

fitted on the high speed shaft and low speed shaft, which is standard for these environments. Without these extra precautions, the seals would perish and the paint would peel off. SEW-Eurodrive’s scope of work included the supply of 36 MC mixing units fitted with EBD (extended bearing distance) to absorb the radial forces encountered in mixing. A further 17 helical gear units were supplied, some of which were assembled with AM Adapters. The bearings on the system should last more than nine years and based on calculations, the bearing life should be in excess of 100 000 hours if they are properly maintained. This ensures high-efficiency and minimal downtime. Paxton indicates that Mixtec has been a satisfied SEW-Eurodrive client for a number of years. “We involved SEW-Eurodrive in the project right from the beginning, due to the fact that the company displays commitment to the task at hand from initial quotation, right through to after-sales back-up and technical support.” Enquiry No: 34

ultotec remains focused on new processes and technologies that result in improved efficiencies and reduced operational costs for its customers. With the advent of urban mining where recycled materials are reprocessed, the introduction of Clean-iX technology could play a vital role in beneficiating rare earths components. Multotec’s partnership with Australian company Clean TeQ provides a technology that combines continuous and counter current ion exchange to produce a highly effective rare earth element (REE) process. Carien van der Walt, process engineer for environmental products at Multotec Process Equipment, points out that the conventional REE process entails an initial beneficiation step, normally via gravity concentration. The concentrate produced is roasted with sulphuric acid to produce REE sulphate complexes. Thereafter the roasting discharge is mixed with water to produce a slurry which is atmospherically leached. The slurry from the leach circuit normally undergoes solid liquid separation to produce a liquid pregnant leach solution.

Celebrating

The pregnant leach solution is precipitated in two stages. The first precipitation stage involves precipitation with magnesia to produce a mixture of impurities such as thorium, uranium and iron. Stage II precipitation is normally conducted with the addition of ammonium oxalate to produce a mixed REE precipitate that is sold as the final product. “The main problem with this process is the production of radioactive elements such as thorium and uranium,” she explains. “Clean TeQ looked at finding a way to reduce the potential hazards and environmental impact associated with this methodology, whilst realising capital and operating cost savings." The resultant Clean-iX technology has produced favourable results across the board in terms of increased rare earths yields, increased environmental stewardship and a very attractive and significant reduction in operational costs,” van der Walt says. Two options are available for customers. In the first instance, the rare earths can be recovered with far less thorium and uranium extracted reducing the amount of impurities

sent to precipitation along with the final product. The second solution entails selective recovery of the uranium and thorium in two separate processes, resulting in the tho- rium, uranium and rare earths being produced as three separate streams. Clean-iX effectively replaces the leaching circuit and stage II precipitation in conventional REE recovery circuits with a resin-in-leach (cRIL) ion exchange process. This allows immediate extraction of the rare earths as it comes into solution and drives the leaching reaction, which reduces the leach time and leachate consumption. “The end result is a better quality product and a significantly reduced radioactive waste factor. Clean-iX achieves recoveries of rare earth elements of up to 90% and higher and provides a substantial reduction in the amount of ammonium salt required to precipitate the rare earth elements downstream, as an additional bonus” Enquiry No: 35 van der Walt concludes.

ccording to toolboxtips.com, 42% of all forklift fatalities occur within manufacturing facilities. While driver education on the correct operation of forklift trucks is a primary goal in reducing this risk, other elements also come into play. Wim Dessing, managing director of Apex Strip Curtains & Doors, says that accidents can occur at internal entry and exit points as well as at points of transition between various sections in a manufacturing or storage facility. By ensuring that visibility is maximised, the risks associated with the movement of vehicular traffic can be substantially reduced. Dessing proposes the use of strip curtains in doorways. “Apex Strip Curtains & Doors pioneered the use of flexible PVC strips in industrial applications more than 30 years ago and the use of these transparent strips to cordon off doorways and sections of a plant ensure optimised safety in the workplace” he says. Apex General Purpose Strip Curtains are produced using specially formulated PVC material which is transparent for increased visibility and will not discolour, crack or tear over time. The individual strips incorporate the company’s patented Balledge feature which, while ensuring an effective thermal seal at all times, allows the strips to part easily allowing unimpeded movement of personnel or vehicular traffic. The Balledge design comprises a reinforced edge on the border of each strip that also provides extended life of the strips irrespective of the application in which they Enquiry No: 36 are used.

anitou has recently supplied Mondi South Africa with eight RT210 track loaders for its forestry operations. Each loader was supplied with full forestryspec (that drastically increases performance

E

These radial lift compact track loaders are suited to all modern forestry processes. “In the old days, the harvesters would just cut off the trees and let the stumps stand and regrow,” comments Herzberg. “But nowadays harvesters need to ‘grab’ the stumps, remove them and set them aside to be cleared.” That’s where Gehl loaders come in, specialised mulching and turbo saw attachments get rid of stumps and its debris, including leaves and branches. Manitou, in conjunction with Novelquip, has also revolutionised the pitting and planting process with its new specialised loader attachment. “Before harvesters can re-plant trees, they need to de-pit and soften up the ground. Our new attachment can make the pit, plant the seedling, add fertiliser and water in less than 20 seconds.” remarks Herzberg.

Manitou also supplied its rotary cutter attachment than assists in cleaning weeds and shrubs between the rows of trees and creating essential two-metre fire breaks. In addition, Manitou sweeper attachments sweep the forest floors in high fire season. “Forestry applications require higher safety specifications, particularly when using the mulching attachment,” adds Herzberg. “This attachment turns at 2 500 RMP and breaks large trees into mulch within seconds…and as you can imagine this results in flying splinters and rocks. Also, more often than not, when working in forests there is always the threat of wasps, bees and even snakes.” All eight machines were customised to address the challenges associated with forestry applications. Johnson Taylor Forklifts Onwards and Upwards

W

ith a move to new premises in Hillclimb Road in Westmead, Pinetown and a new facility which boasts over 3 000m², Johnson Taylor Forklifts - the name associated with the Rhino Heli forklift brand in South Africa - has happily celebrated over 10 years in a very competitive market and are going from strength to strength. From its new facility, Johnson Taylor now offers direct sales, a fully fledged workshop and 24 hour callout and standby. The company offers a 95% spare parts availability at any given time

and offers onsite technical support to larger contracts. In addition, Johnson Taylor can tailor make deals for customers and offer various payment plans, sales, rental and repairs as well as full maintenance lease, making them a competitive player in the market. Over the past ten years the Rhino Heli Forklift brand perception in the market place has changed from one of “just another Chinese forklift truck” to becoming one of the most trusted brands in the market and this has been attributable to the hard work and determination of the team and

the product itself. In recognition of the demand, the company is pleased to announce the introduction of two new products to the market, namely the “H” series Counter Balance Forklift and the CHL range of Counter Balance forklifts. These new models follow on from the very successful H2000 series machines which have given ten years of great service to the industry. The new H Series Balance Weight Forklift is the premier brand or “Rolls Royce” of the brand and is both powerful and environmentally friendly.

The H Series offers a full suspension drivers cabin which greatly increases the operational comfort. It also offers an extremely large operation space with a large arc shape over the overhead guards front leg, tilting cylinders that are under the floorboards allowing for increased leg and foot space and a heightened overhead guard. A wide view mast improves the drivers front view and makes loading and unloading much more reliable. A streamlined parts layout and hood opening angle allows for easier maintenance. The constant displacement pump loading sensing steering system optimises the oil feed of the hydraulic system and increases lifting speed and thus overall efficiency. CAE technology and topdown design have allowed for the optimisation of the layout, cutting down on resonance and improves the strength and durability of the frame, overhead guard, cabin and mast making for a far tougher truck. In addition it also offers the latest LED lighting technology, cast axles, tropical core aluminium radiators, which are essential for combating overheating in the KwaZulu-Natal environment and is SABS, ISO and CE approved. City surge is the true renaissance of the work-at-height industry

A

ccording to the United Nations, by 2030, almost 5 billion people, or 60 percent of the world’s population will live in cities. This accelerated urbanization trend is the key indicator for significant growth in urban and industrial development. In the context of mega-cities, expansion is no longer outward, it’s upward. Brett Fleming, CEO of Eazi Group, Africa’s market leader in work-at-height solutions comments, “This industrial growth underpins the need for a shift in the trend of work-at-height solutions, where safety, efficiency and cost are key.” Recently, Eazi Access Rental landed southern Africa’s first JLG 1850 telescopic boom lift

that reaches 58.5 metres in height, in layman’s terms that equates to 17 stories. This colossus is the shape of things to come and reflects the rising volume of projects and tasks being performed at height. With cities booming across the African continent, construction and infrastructure opportunities continue to thrive and legacy equipment like traditional mobile or tower cranes will continue to be seen for many years. But with technological advancements, Eazi Access Rental has seen the need for smaller nimbler cranes, like the Maeda Mini Crane. With expansion trend being upwards, space becomes increasingly constricted, and this is where this mini crane has no equal. Its

specialist lifting capability is unsurpassed, and sports a cost and time performance that’s the envy of the industry. The drive for flexibility and efficiency on site increases demand for mechanical hybrids that would not be out of place in a Transformer movie. Machines like the 3-in-1 Magni telehandler operates as three different solutions: as a rotating telehandler for on-site offloads, as a crane and as an access platform at height. Another major trend is the demand for increasingly environmentally friendly machines that reduce the risk for hydraulic spills and run on electric supply or low-emission diesel

engines. According to Marcus Green, National Asset Manager for Eazi Access Rental, powering machines with Lithium ion batteries has now become standard, due to their efficiency and environmental performance. For these reasons, Green also opts for AC rather than DC Enquiry No: 44 drive motors.

ccess to trade, particularly in landlocked countries such as Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia will remain a logistical challenge in the foreseeable future for both South African and global businesses, due to the continent’s lack of infrastructure and challenging customs procedures. This is according to Bruce Marshall (pictured), Country Manager: Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi of Maersk Line, who says that, despite these challenges, the continent has massive economic potential. “Increasing trade activity between landlocked countries and the rest of Africa and the world will not only stimulate their own economies, but also assist them to become more self-sufficient.” Jonathan Horn, Managing Director of Maersk Line in Southern Africa - a member of the Maersk Group - points to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which was once again in the spotlight at the UN Sustainability Summit 2015 which took place from 25 – 27 September 2015. The eighth goal is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all. “Following the summit, it is important to raise awareness of the importance of trade between Africa and global markets, as it is the cornerstone of sustainable economic growth and can be an engine that drives employment and growth in Africa’s economies.” Horn explains that the key to achieving optimal trade is a perfect marriage between maritime, road and rail transportation, depot and warehousing facilities, and recommends that businesses looking to explore the opportunities that Africa presents should consult experienced trade partners such as Maersk Line, who have been present in the region for several decades and possess the necessary expert knowledge to provide solutions and reliable transportation of goods, as well as have representation in the relevant countries. “An example of the one of the commercial opportunities present in Africa is the need for energy as Africa's the ideal place for alternative and innovative energy solutions, as many countries cannot depend on conventional electricity resources." "This has been recognised by global exporters of energy products such as China which is currently the biggest exporter to landlocked regions, and supply products such as solarised lights, solar lamps, inverters, generators, solar panels and other alternative energy sources.” Marshall says that there is a very strong relationship between Asian energy manufacturers and reliable trade partners that distribute these energy products to the importers in various African regions which in the past may have been unable to access international supply chains and global markets due to lack of scale, export and market knowledge, investment capacity or lack of transport, cold chains and logistics services. “Partnering with an experienced trade specialist can help facilitate and unlock the opportunities and commercial prospects available in landlocked African countries.” Enquiry No: 45

Multiple cranes for pump stations C ondra has delivered the first two of eight double-girder overhead travelling cranes ordered by Veolia Water for the Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme. The eight machines are maintenance cranes for the project’s high-lift and low-lift pump stations, and for the water treatment works’ decanter centrifuge, chlorine tanks, machine room, chemical doser and offloading bay. All machines were corrosion-proofed using a hot metal zinc coating applied as a spray. The bulk water supply scheme under construction on the Tugela River is an Umgeni Water project, and comprises an abstraction works and low-lift pump station, a de-silting works, water treatment works and a high-lift pump station linked to bulk supply pipelines with associated water storage reservoirs. After completion early next year, the project will supply potable water from the Tugela to

a number of towns along the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, from Mandini in the north to Ballito in the south. Veolia Water’s order for the overhead cranes was worth a little under R5,5-million to Condra, which completed manufacture in

January, holding the machines in storage until they were needed on site. The order builds on Condra’s long standing tradition of partnering with efforts to conserve and properly manage southern Africa’s water resources, with the company becoming one of the region’s preferred suppliers of cranes to water storage and wastewater treatment projects. Major orders have included cranes for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and, more recently, cranes for the Department of Water and Sanitation’s De Hoop Dam on the Steelpoort River in Limpopo Province, commissioned last year. Condra is South Africa’s only multinational crane manufacturer, with headquarters in Germiston, Gauteng, and a factory in Bulgaria. There is an established worldwide distribution Enquiry No: 46 network.

abcock’s Level 4 Broad- Based Black Economic Empowered (BBBEE) rating places them in the forefront of contention for any major infrastructure project development that requires their mechanical construction plant hire. With a combined inventory of more than 40 000 items of plant for hire, from mobile cranes to welding and construction plant Babcock caters for the energy, process, marine, petrochemical and mining industries in Southern Africa. The recent acquisition of a new Tadano ATF400G-6, 400 ton, All-Terrain Crane has enabled them to increase their level of service to a broader sector of industry. “With the acquisition of this 400t crane, being the biggest Tadano unit in our fleet, we have beefed up our heavy rigging capacity to meet most of the demands of any infrastructure development where we will be called upon to quote,” explained Ian Kendrick, MD, Plant Services.

The ATF400-6 crane has been allocated to the Richards Bay branch, from where it will be operating at Richards Bay Minerals on a three year contract. The branch in Richards Bay has been established to cater for the proposed industrial expansions in the area. Richards Bay Coal Terminal and Mondi in particular will be high demand areas. Before the ATF400-6 was placed in operation, a heavy rigging crew of 12 personnel with an average of 20 years experience, received training at Tadano as they will be in constant attendance wherever the crane operates. On the road the six-axle vehicle is highly manoeuvrable with all six axles steerable and four driven. The driven axles incorporate transverse differential locks. Power for the ATF400-6 carrier is provided by a Mercedes-Benz OM 502 LA 8-cylinder diesel engine rated at 480 kW @ 1800 rpm and 3000 Nm of torque @ 1300 rpm. The ZF-TC-Tronic

HD transmission with torque convertor and integrated intarder, electro pneumatically operated dry-type clutch and automatic gear-shifting incorporates 12 forward and two reverse gears. Reducing railway maintenance costs

S

KF in cooperation with SJ, the Swedish national rail operator, recently started to run SKF Insight on a railway vehicle. This pilot demonstrated the technical and commercial advantages of SKF Insight intelligent bearing technology when retrofitted to the wheelset axlebox assemblies used in passenger rail vehicles. These advantages include the ability to improve the in-service availability of passenger rail vehicles, while reducing maintenance costs gradually and safely extending wheelset bearing maintenance intervals. SKF Insight is a new generation of bearing technology, which integrates an intelligent, self-powered sensor and wireless device within a conventional bearing envelope. In the new rail sys-

B

tem, this is combined with a node and gateway wireless infrastructure, enabling data from each wheelset to be gathered and transmitted in real time to a remote server for analysis. The system can easily be retrofitted to existing wheelsets without the need for modification. This enables railway engineers to move safely from a reactive or scheduled maintenance approach, where bearings are changed at regular intervals regardless of condition, to a predictive maintenance regime, when bearings are only changed when they have reached a defined level of wear. Other advantages include the ability to minimise in-service incidents and

the costs associated with false hot-box detection. “Although wireless monitoring systems have been tested in the past they lack the intelligent, self-powered technology of SKF Insight. Just as importantly, no other supplier has the depth of knowledge and experience found at SKF, as we have been manufacturing and fitting wheelset bearings and condition monitoring tools in the rail industry for many years”, says Maurizio Giovannelli, Project Manager at SKF. “This pilot project is a part of SJ’s effort to find new technical solutions, "says Pär Söderström, Technical Specialist at SJ’s Vehicle Division.

Ports and container handling solution

owermite introduces the Lasstec Load Sensing and Operational Safety System. This latest innovation from Conductix applies the twistlock method and delivers an accurate, versatile, efficient, economical and safe port and container handling solution that is compliant with the new International Maritime Organisation (IMO) legislation for mandatory container weight verification. Powermite, part of the Hudaco Group, is a specialist supplier of electrical and mechanical equipment for moving machinery. The company became involved in supplying equipment such as ship-to-shore loaders and electrified rubber tire gantries (ERTGs) as a consequence of a partnership forged with the French multinational, Delachaux and its Conductix-Wampfler operation, a global supplier to the materials handling industries with a focus on energy and data transmission for industrial equipment. “Our materials handling division has been a distributor of Conductix’s quality range of products including drag chains, cable reelers and slip-ring housings for over 40 years,” says Powermite Director, Donovan Marks.

Inadequate control of the weight of individual shipping containers as well as container weight distribution on a loaded ship has severe safety implications as it can lead to ship overloading and instability at sea. Consequently the IMO decided to make container weight verification mandatory and recently approved the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) amendment which when implemented globally in Q3 2016, will make it the shipper’s responsibility to declare the correct container weight; failure to do so will result in the terminal weighing the container at the shipper’s expense.

This development has increased the focus on how terminals will weigh containers if the weight has not already been verified prior to reaching the terminal. Enter the efficient time and cost saving Lasstec system, a more practical and economical alternative to weighing bridges that provides on-the-go weighing without interruption to the terminal operation or the need for terminal infrastructure changes . Using twistlock and fibre-optic technology, the load sensing system accurately records container weight and also provides invaluable weight distribution data which enhances the safety and accuracy of the stowing plan. The process is quite simple. “The system measures the strain (extension) of each twistlock of single- and twinlift spreaders as well as mobile harbour crane applications during a lift." "It uses these measurements to determine accurate load measurements from each corner of each container. As load measuring on each twistlock is done during the normal load cycle there are no delays or interruptions to the load cycle. The actual weight is sent into a central data processing unit from where the information is distributed to the crane PLC and the TOS enabling accurate weights to be used in the ship loading plan.” Says Marks. The system boasts a weighing accuracy per container over the full measuring range of +/- 200 kg and the maximum allowable load per twistlock is 100 tons. Enquiry No: 53

The importance of using enhanced lubricants

W

hen a piece of heavy industrial equipment fails, the cost is usually far greater than merely replacing damaged parts. The danger to workers and the downtime that the failure may bring can be crippling. Often, a machine breaks down from something as simple as a lack of lubrication, or use of a product not best suited to the equipment, states Filter Focus COO Craig FitzGerald. “Lubricants perform many essential functions within machinery, including cooling, transferring power, reducing friction, preventing wear and tear, and minimising deposits and contaminants. With additive technology becoming more and more sophisticated, understanding the lubricant you’re investing in has become more important for operational staff and engineers,” he asserts. While components break down and wear is inevitable with any machinery, using superior lubricants designed specifically for the equipment in use and the job at hand can prevent the wear of parts. According to FitzGerald, visual inspection of components coupled with

planned maintenance and a log of when a machine’s parts were last lubricated is key to keeping costs down and efficiency up. “As a wear control specialist, Filter Focus’ involvement in implementing comprehensive lubrication and filtration programmes at sites in a number of industries has resulted in massive cost savings, as well as major reductions in energy and oil consumption, and less machine failures,” he says. FitzGerald points out that contaminated lubricants dramatically reduce the life of lubrication system components.

What is little understood is that all lubricants are contaminated, it is just the levels of contamination that differ, and this is no different with brand new, unused oils. The role of lubricants in contamination management is critical, as abrasive dust and wear particles constantly build up in the machinery, regardless of the preventive measures taken. This highlights the need for effective lubricants and micro-fine bypass filtration as an essential part of the maintenance programme. With the enhancements in lubricants performing a variety of functions per piece of equipment and project, FitzGerald stresses that it’s vital that customers know exactly what they’re buying and what each lubricant brings to their bottom line. “Most importantly, Filter Focus provides a faster, safer clean-up process, higher production, lower energy consumption, while producing less hazardous waste. These are vital aspects of environmental responsibility and compliance,” he concludes. Enquiry No: 54

New rotary telescopic handler

obcat Equipment (Pty) Ltd unveiled the flagship in the new four-model Roto Tele Handler range, the T50210, at Bauma Conexpo 2015. “What makes the Bobcat Roto Tele Handler truly unique is the fact that it offers a 3-in1 solution,” explains Bobcat Equipment’s National Sales Manager, Andre Steenkamp. “When used with a Bobcat pallet fork or bucket, it’s a telescopic handler but by attaching one of our man platforms, the machine transforms into an aerial work platform; add a winch or jib attachment and it can be used as a crane.” According to Steenkamp, the vast array of Bobcat attachments can be fitted easily in a matter of minutes. “All four rotary models are equipped standard with man platform settings,” adds Steenkamp. These versatile, flexible and efficient Roto Tele Handlers deliver unrivalled value add by offering virtually endless possibilities. Efficiency has been incorporated throughout the design of the machines; improved height and reach, excellent manoeuvrability, ergonomics and easy, low maintenance gives new meaning to

productivity as the end-user can do so much more on site and perform a greater variety of work in less time using only one machine. The TR50210 Roto Tele Handler has four-section booms, offering maximum lifting heights of 20.5m on stabilizers and 20.3m on tyres. Its 360° rotating capability improves reach and accessibility, enabling the machine to serve the needs of an entire site from just one position without having to move between areas. The machine offers exceptional stability for lifting heavy materials either vertically up to a roof or horizontally onto the edge of an excavated site and provides access to applications above 17m reach.

Load sensing control ensures simple and safe stability management. The four independently controlled stabilizers allow full stability even on irregular terrain. Travel time is downtime for construction equipment but when the Bobcat tele rotors, driven by a 106kW liquidcooled diesel power pack, have to travel they can move quickly from one job site to another so that it’s ‘back to work’ in no time. Compared to a rigid frame tele handler, the Bobcat Roto Tele can cut the time to complete repetitive jobs to less than half, even without moving the machine from the stabilizers. The machine’s excellent manoeuvrability provides access to even the most confined spaces.

Newcastle plant chute upgrade

eba Chute Systems has successfully completed the installation of 16 chute systems at Arcelor Mittal’s Newcastle works. The chutes form part of a conveying system attached to the upgrade of blast furnace Number 5 at the plant. “Weba Chute Systems was contracted by Howden for this particular project after being specified by Arcelor Mittal itself ,” Ted Cruickshank, Project Manager at Weba Chute Systems, says. A couple of the transfer points had excessive transfer heights of around 16 m to 18 m. “It was essential that this be taken into account at the design stage, because when material is transferred at such heights, it becomes more difficult to control the velocity through the transfer point. " "When material is not properly controlled during the handling process, it can lead to excessive wear, poor loading and excessive dust emissions.” Cruickshank says. It is far simpler to mitigate against such potential problems by means of upfront involvement. “Many of the issues associated with transfer points can be eliminated during the design stage." "Consulting with us during this vital phase means that we can bring the experience and expertise we have gained during thousands of installa-

tions to bear on an individual project. It also eliminates the situation where transfer points need to be redesigned after installation because certain critical factors are not taken into account. O"ne of the most common problems associated with conventional chute design is where the product drops from any height directly onto the belt. The common practice of installing skirting and a skirting box as a remedy to control spillage incurs an additional capital outlay and is not guaranteed to alleviate the problems associated with incorrect belt loading. Regardless of the direction or type of transfer, there are some design requirements that require specific attention, Cruickshank emphasises. A major factor at the Arcelor Mittal project was the reduction or

suppression of dust, which posed a particular challenge as the material conveyed is prone to dust generation when being transferred. “We had to look at containing the dust wherever possible and also suppressing the dust, which is vital from an environmental point of view,” Cruickshank says. In addition, the contract was on a tight timeframe. In terms of the exact specifications of this project, material is transferred from the chutes onto conveyor belts that are either 600 mm or 900 mm wide. The belts move at speeds ranging from 1.27 m/s to 1.96 m/s and the material density ranges from 0.6 to 1.8 tpm³. The material throughput is an average of between 54 tph to 256 tph per hour. This particular chute design was achieved using a sophisticated 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) programme. This, combined with close consultation with the client, resulted in the optimum design which was derived at and tested using a combination of sound engineering tools, substantial practical knowledge and Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation as a verification tool. “It is important to factor in the operation’s unique product specifications and data, belt width, belt speed, material sizes and shape and throughput as well as the plant layout, including the position of belt scrapers and dust

arker Hannifin, the global leader in motion and control technologies, recently announced that the AC30 series of drives has achieved DNV marine certification. The certification emphasises the ability of AC30 to operate reliably and safely in even the most extreme of environments, including marine and offshore. Available in the power range 0.75kW to 75kW the certified AC30 can be specified in a wide range of applications including towing winches, cranes, hoists, compressors, propulsion and steering. The only drive on the market offering

environmental protection to class 3C3 and 3C4 (H2S), the AC30 features EMC filters and integral DC line chokes to ensure performance and reliability. The feature rich AC30, a m o d u lar and capable drive for control of AC induction or permanent magnet (PMAC) motors in both open- and closed-loop applications, is perfectly suited to the demanding applications of the marine industry. AC30 frames comply with DNV rules for classification of ships and high speed/light craft in as well as DNV offshore standards under

suppression/extraction systems." "We take a holistic approach towards chute design, which encapsulates both the entry and exit points, as well as the control

of the flow, volume and velocity of the material being transferred at all times,” Cruickshank concludes. Enquiry No: 58

Tower cranes set the pace

A

lthough the majority of contractors see a tower crane as simply another piece of materials handling equipment, this is not how Manitowoc views this vital tool. Tower cranes are often the determinant factor when it comes to productivity on a construction site, and ongoing product development by Manitowoc is aimed specifically at enhancing the return on investment (ROI) for customers. David Semple, Manitowoc VP Sales Middle East & Africa, explains that there are a number of things which define the ROI on a tower crane and chief amongst these is the productivity of the machine. “There is a significant difference in the speed at which construction can take place based on the amount of materials moved in a single working day. For example, whether you can pour 100 buckets of concrete or 120 buckets can have an impact on the daily build programme,” he adds. In addition to operational productivity, the speed of

.

ISO 9001 accreditation achieved

T

erection and disassembly of the tower crane is just as important. Furthermore, the speed at which the unit can be climbed also has an impact, especially where the building being constructed is high rise. Dismantling of the machine is also important as this too is a time related task. The Potain tower crane has been engineered to facilitate speed of erection as well as dismantling, and its ergonomic design makes it easier for rigging crews and ensures optimal safety during both activities. Productivity of a tower crane could also be compromised if it is not correctly configured as it would then not operate optimally. An example of this could be where the winch is undersized and the tower crane could then become a bottleneck on site, slowing down materials handling and subsequent construction activities. Mix of old and new to revitalise city landmark

S

itting alongside Kings Park Stadium and near the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban’s Lion Match Factory holds its own as one of the city’s memorable architectural landmarks. Property development and construction group, JT Ross, bought the 90-yearold site more than 10 years ago when Lion Match moved its manufacturing operations

T

to Gauteng. Rejuvenation of the site, began under the guidance of Dean Jay Architects, one of the many tenants based at the premises. Listed as an Amafa heritage site, construction of the new buildings and refurbishment of the existing buildings was carefully monitored with the architects opting to blend the old and new buildings seamlessly yet with pertinent

distinguishing features. The bricks used in the refurbishment were a mixture of reused old bricks from one of the demolished warehouses, alongside Corobrik’s range of terracotta satin face bricks and burgundy pavers. “We wanted to match the newer bricks with the older ones while playing with different brickwork styles throughout,” she explained. “We highlighted the new additions as obviously modern rather than trying to repeat the traditional design." "While the new additions are modern, we have used the same colours and materials that were used in the original buildings.” Sarah Fourie of Dean Jay Architects The interiors of the existing buildings have retained the industrial, factory design with exposed trusses and clerestorey lighting. The internal face brick has been painted in shades of white and grey which introduces different textures while staying in keeping with the industrial feel. The older buildings have also retained the original English bond brickwork pattern on the plinth which correlates with a number of the signature building aspects such as the “signage walls” which have been constructed using reused old bricks. ockwell Automation is applying control, visualisation and power solutions, and commercial off-the-shelf technologies to complex marine applications. These technologies work to virtually integrate vessels vertically and horizontally; enable islands of automation to ‘communicate’; provide networks that self-diagnose and selfheal; as well as control smart systems that help to reduce the workload. Rising energy costs, increasing environmental regulation, accelerating demand for larger multi-purpose ships and increasing regulatory compliance are some of the global trends forcing ship designers and builders to move from traditional methodology to solutions that will improve the ships’ efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and lower emission levels. These new trends have their own challenges such as meeting the requirements of the various classification societies for marine applications; and providing cost-effective solutions that deliver high efficiency, higher MTBF, low MTTR, lower harmonics and a smaller footprint. Today there’s a convergence of new technologies – flexible, configurable controls, selfdiagnosing networks, user-friendly operator interfaces – to help the world’s marine industry. These are encompassed in the Rockwell Automation Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) technologies with a proven track record. These technologies are already at work around the world in industrial environments that rival conditions at sea, performing reliably day-after-day. Best of all, their widespread use and economies of scale result in costeffective solutions. eallocating control functions to the individual machine modules allows machine engineers and operators to make maximum use of valuable site space, enhancing their production capacities. The cabinet-free drive technology IndraDrive Mi from Bosch Rexroth is enabling this idea to be implemented in automation applications across numerous industries and production sites. T h e IndraDrive Mi merges its drive electronics and motor into an integral unit. This combination virtually eliminates drive electronics housed within a cabinet and drastically reduces the wiring required to connect the individual components. With the integrated drive control unit from Bosch Rexroth, drive functions, motion control and flow logic merge into an open automation platform. Complex motion tasks can be handled with the motion logic system, which is fully designed in accordance with IEC 61131-3. “The cabinet-free drive technology extends the possibilities to modularise machine concepts,” Georg Venter, Divisional Manager, Tectra Automation, explains. “Machine manufacturers pre-assemble machine modules and then connect them to one another at the cabinet without any further work.” Central to the reallocation of drive control components are the Bosch Rexroth decentralised supply and mains modules. “This is how machine manufacturers can integrate all drive components directly into the machine without needing a cabinet,” Venter explains.

KF, the knowledge engineering company, presented an innovative shaft alignment tool at Hannover Fair 2015. The TKSA 51 is the first instrument designed for intuitive shaft alignments using tablets and smartphones. The app makes it quick and easy to set up of motors, drives, fans, gearboxes, pulleys and couplings, even by operators who use the instrument for the first time. The new TKSA 51 comprises two compact and lightweight laser measuring units, designed to suit almost any application. Using the versatile shaft brackets, the instrument can be mounted on small machines with limited space, whilst extension chains, rods and magnetic holders are supplied for mounting the tool on large machines. Connected wirelessly, the app uses real time data to provide a live 3D view of the measuring units. This gives operators the possibility to rotate the virtual machine at their convenience in all directions, making the alignment as intuitive as possible. Measurements are made by a simple touch of a button or by the handsfree automatic measurement function which just needs the shaft to be rotated to the next measurement position. Jens Kammann, Product Manager at SKF Maintenance Products, points out that, “Shaft misalignment is one of the main causes of machine failure. It creates additional forces and vibration that can damage machine components such as bearings, seals and couplings, adding considerably to operating and maintenance costs." "Often, we find shafts not being aligned correctly because the applied method or instrument is time consuming and difficult to use, leading to mistakes and incorrect alignments. The TKSA 51 eliminates these problems, making it the ideal companion for every alignment task. All-round sewer and drain cleaning machine T he Ridgid K-15000SP Sectional Machine, available from Dowson & Dobson Industrial, is an all-round sewer and drain cleaning machine. Industrial tooling and equipment supplier Dowson & Dobson Industrial (D&D), a division of Actum Industrial, focuses on supplying the plumbing and municipal sectors with fluid technology and water solutions. Described as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of drain cleaning machines, the Ridgid K-1500SP is a mobile, all-round sewer and drain cleaning machine. Capable of cleaning lines up to 250 mm wide, it is ideal for root cutting and major blockages, with a 1 500 W motor and five 4.6 m sections of cable. The unique, easy-to-use instant-acting cable clutch maximises operator control. When the handle is pulled down, the cable spins at 600 rpm, and stops instantly when the handle is released. An advantage is that the machine can be wheeled to the relevant job site for rapid set-up and a quick turnaround time for any cleaning operation. Its upright frame features large, semipneumatic ball bearing wheels and a cable carrier. The Ridgid K-1500SP comes with various accessories and a cable toolkit, which

includes straight, funnel and retrieving augers, spade and sharktooth cutters, a toolbox and a pin key. “The low-profile frame design means that this machine will fit most crawl spaces. In addition, one person can easily clean the heaviest blockages, inside or out. The high-speed cleaning action not only gets the job done faster, better too,” comments Kevin Klaff, Actum Group director. Portable and highly efficient equipment such as the Ridgid K-1500SP are vital for municipalities and local authorities to maintain their water and wastewater infrastructure. Given the general lack of maintenance and subsequent deterioration of such infrastructure nationally, these sectors face considerable challenges. Since the Actum Group’s acquisition of D&D in April this year, the focus has been on punting niche products such as the Ridgid K-1500SP. “There is a definite opportunity in the water and wastewater sector for such specialist products,” Klaff notes. The longer-term strategy is for D&D to supply municipalities and local authorities with a ‘one-stop’ solution for their full water and wastewater requirements.

ektronix - represented in South Africa by Comtest (Pty) Limited - has announced availability of the Keithley 2281S Battery Simulator and Precision DC Power Supply. Unlike existing sources and power supplies that can only simulate a battery under one specific condition, the new Keithley battery simulator offers the industry’s first emulation of battery performance from full charge to total discharge using a battery model that includes state of charge, amp-hour capacity, equivalent series resistance, and open circuit voltage. Maximizing battery performance is a critical design goal9 for any battery powered device from smartphones to Internet of Things (IoT) products. A battery simulator enables design engi-

neers to understand the load current drawn by a device in all operating states and how quickly the battery capacity declines. This is much more challenging than ever before due to the growth in wireless devices that draw very complex load currents. A battery simulator such as the 2281S that can dynamically emulate a battery is essential for a thorough, accurate study of device operating time between battery charges or replacement. “The 2281S revolutionizes the way designers characterize and evaluate device performance at all stages of a battery’s discharge cycle,” said Mike Flaherty, general manager, Keithley product line at Tektronix. 9

Ensuring safe press felt measurement

I

n the last 24 months, Voith has already installed 37 of its ProTect systems, which allow for press felt measurements to be taken safely while the machine is running. Another 32 systems have been ordered by various customers in Europe and overseas. Measurement of running press fabrics are absolutely indispensable for efficient paper production. The condition of the felt is monitored, providing data from which conclusions about any irregularities can be drawn. This means that age-related wear or any variations in the felt can be identified reliably during operation. Previously such measurements

S

could only be carried out manually. For safety reasons, various paper manufacturers and governments have recently started to prohibit these kinds of manual measurements. With ProTect, Voith has developed a solution to replace the manual measuring work carried out by service personnel. It consists of a standalone self-propelled carriage on fixed cross beams that can accommodate conventional manual measuring devices for safe use outside the felt run. ProTect can be mounted even in very confined spaces. The system features a battery and integrated water tank, which means it does not have to be connected to a power or water supply. In combination with Voith’s OnV FeltView measuring system, ProTect covers the entire spectrum of felt measurement requirements. OnV FeltView can also be integrated into the OnView information system. he current economic climate is pushing mining companies to reduce their costs. Unfortunately, highly capital projects such as pedestrian detection system (PDS) technology is an area often compromised as a result, leading to safety-related accidents and operational downtime. The investment in a quality PDS system promises to reduce these two issues and ultimately contribute to a safe and productive mine. Poor quality equipment compromises overall equipment effectiveness and often leads to higher running costs and capital outlay in the long run, particularly if the system does not comply with legislated guidelines or only offers machine-to-machine interaction. “Our fit-for-purpose, ISO and legislation-compliant PDS technology, which we continuously improve and upgrade, offers world class overall equipment effectiveness which in turn ensures pedestrian safety,” says Martin Vermaak, operations manager at Booyco Electronics. The Booyco PDS equips miners

with two-way RFID tags and vehicles or other static danger zones with VLF antennae. This creates stable fields of a predetermined size and shape in front of and behind the vehicle. Upon entering this danger zone, either a static danger zone or an approaching vehicle, the pedestrian’s tag immediately triggers a warning signal relays an audible and/or visual warning alarm to the equipment operator. The company’s overall PDS equipment effectiveness also offers significant production advantages Vermaak

continues, specifically performance indicator functionality. The incorporation of Booyco PDS technology can maximise production uptime by providing holistic views of equipment availability, i.e. vehicle losses or breakdowns, as well as shift and material volume performance. “In essence, our equipment should contribute towards machine availability and performance uptime while reducing loss impacting occurrences such as nuisance alarms. Further to this it also provides data to determine such sources of loss.” To ensure its system continues to perform optimally after installation, Booyco Electronics offers additional 24/7 product maintenance and repair support through its service teams, on site or in close proximity to site, again preventing operational downtime challenges when implemented. The company has offices in six miningstrong geographical locations across South Africa, offering full service level agreements and technical support from a local base. Enquiry No: 81

simpler alternative

rug abuse is a growing problem in South Africa, and organisations need to be aware of the consequences on their workforce. A significant part of curbing this issue lies in education on the negative effects of drugs, however, organisations also need to have strict no drug policies in the workplace. These policies need to be enforced, which requires drug testing. However, traditional urine testing has often proved challenging, particularly when it comes to female employees. Saliva drug test solutions offer a safe and convenient alternative for both male and female employees to enforce drug abuse policies and prevent the harmful consequences of this social challenge. This is according to Rhys Evans, Director of ALCO-Safe. Aside from contravening the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), which requires a zero toler-

ance stance on substance abuse in the workplace, drug use can also negatively impact both an organisation and its employees. When it comes to selecting the drug testing equipment, there are a number of different solutions available, divided into two main categories of urine testing and saliva testing. Urine testing, as the name implies, requires a urine sample. This means that a female safety officer needs to accompany the woman being tested to the bathroom and watch them urinate to ensure the sample is not tampered with. Not only is this degrading for the dignity of the employee in question, it is also often embarrassing as it is

difficult to get the sample into the cup without messing or spilling. Saliva drug testing solutions provide a simple and convenient alternative that circumvents all of these i s s u e s and complaints. Saliva testing uses a swab that is simply held in the mouth for a certain period of time, and so can be accomplished anywhere. Results are produces in a matter of minutes, and the tests can be used to screen for a panel of five common illegal substances including heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamines. There are no privacy concerns with such testing, and a male or female tester can test both male and female subjects. One thing to bear in mind, however, is that some saliva testing units can be very large and heavy and are not Enquiry No: 82 particularly portable.

School of concrete technology prepares for busy 2016

T

he 2016 Education Programme of the School of Concrete Technology (SCT), operated by The Concrete Institute, is now available. John Roxburgh (pictured), lecturer at SCT based in Midrand, says the need for skills upliftment in the construction industry has never been more vital as South Africa prepares for the long-awaited roll out of tenders in the Presidential Strategic Infrastructure Projects (SIPs) in 2016. “We are expecting a busy year. The scope of opportunities is great, but to take advantage of this, education in concrete technology is crucial. Companies in the construction and civil engineering industries, in particular, should use this opportunity to invest in their employees’ skills and career development by enroll-

ing them for a SCT course. Using the School’s stepped approach to concrete education, an employer can map out a progressive career path for the employee who could then start his or her concrete education at a level matched to individual competencies,” Roxburgh states. The School of Concrete Technology is South Africa’s leading provider of education in concrete technology with its broad spectrum of courses, and caters for a wide variety of educational needs within the construction, mining and concrete-related industries. “A SCT certificate is instantly recognised and highly regarded in industry. A qualification in concrete technology will open doors in many different fields of employment at a critical time in South Africa’s infrastructural development,” he adds.

Training courses offered by the SCT are aimed at industries such as: • Ready-mix concrete; • Admixtures; • Testing laboratories; • Construction and civil engineering; • Mining; • Aggregate production; • Materials; • Related industries such as formwork, precast concrete, concrete products, and concrete production machinery; and • The increasingly popular decorative concrete market. The SCT will present “the pinnacle in concrete technology education”, the Advanced Concrete Technology (SCT50 ACT) diploma in 2016 and then again in 2018. This internationally acclaimed qualification is presented by the SCT and examined by the Institute of Concrete Technology Enquiry No: 84 in London.
