Floating the "Blue Economy"

T

here has been much focus on the importance of growing the “Blue Economy” as a means of creating jobs in this country and the importance of the ocean in growing the economy was under close scrutiny as recently as the end of February, when the 1st Annual Durban Maritime Summit took place in Durban. A local company making sure that it is making a contribution by developing new and innovative technology and employing and up skilling local employees is Marine & General Engineering. The company, based in Jacobs in Durban, is a custom builder and repairer of sea boats and pontoons primarily manufactured from composites and steel/aluminium. The company specialises in boats in the 5 – 25 meter size range and has produced both mono and twin hulled aluminium boats, fishing boats, rigid hull inflatable boats, dinghies, laser boats and special purpose steel/ aluminium pontoons. All boats and specialized products manufactured at Marine & General are done so according to ISO9001:2008 standards and all processes adhere to Lloyds Rules and Regulations. In addition, the company also takes on repairs and maintenance.

Hull and keel modifications, engine repairs and replacements, fiberglass repair and replacement, electrical systems modification, carpentry and custom metal fabrication are just some of the services supplied by the company. The company is currently in the process of constructing two aluminium 12m river patrol boats for the Department of Defense and this project was planned for completion at the end of February. The delivery of these boats will see the conclusion of a project that began 12 months ago. The project was initially intended to take 7 months to complete, but the detailed specifications for the project took a little longer to finalise before production could begin. Amongst these specifications where the following: • Each boat should measure 12 m long and 2.5 m wide. • The boats needed to be both transportable by road, and of such a size and weight as to be transportable on a C130 Hercules aircraft. • The craft also had to be able to operate in water as shallow as 0.5m, operate in muddy water and achieve top speeds of 35 knots. • Each craft has the capacity to carry 15 passengers including the

crew and can carry up to 1.4 tons of cargo. Protection from crossfire is assured by ballistic shields and each craft carries a guarantee of a 30 year lifespan, including a midlife upgrade. Once the drawings had been finalized and approved, the company ordered the material from the Cape and it was supplied the aluminium panels precisely laser cut to specification. The engines where sourced from Marine Diesel Sweden and each boat was equipped with 2 x 450 h/p engines. The water jets for the boats were sourced from a company called Castoldi, based in Italy. The manufacturing process took 6 months which was preceded by a design and review process which took another 6 months There are currently 30 people working on the project full time and the company utilised 2000 square meters of workshop which includes a machine shop, a fabrication shop and sandblasting and spray painting facilities. According to Marine & General Spokesman, Ashley Govender, “this project has been a great achievement for the company. We are one of the first in KwaZulu-Natal to manufacture a fully aluminium boat. During this project we have had to draw from the wealth of talent in the local market and in the process become a leader in aluminium boat construction.” The company owns a wide range of state of the art equipment which allows them to offer versatile service to cater to almost any request for small to medium boat design or repair on-site. Marine & General Engineering is a Level 1 BEE with 75 permanent staff members at their Jacobs premises. The company also has branches in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Enquiry no: 1

Turning container loading on its head

A

completely new container tilter has been introduced to the market by International Materials Handling SA – a KwaZuluNatal based company, specializing in manufacturing equipment for the logistics industry. This simple, one man operated tilter is used to turn a container on its end and allow for loading to take place from above. The process of handling the container from the top makes side locking a simple operation and an independent side shift is of great assistance when returning the container to the original position. The tilter operation is located around the centre of gravity, also allowing for a marked reduction in energy usage. A tilter is already in operation at Industrial Scrap Metal in Westmead and according to James Roberts, a director of the company; “The tilter has made loading scrap both simpler and faster. We have noticed a significant difference in the amount of scrap we are able to package in each container and the simple operating process has increased producEnquiry no: 2 tivity considerably”.

Lessening the impact of construction industry challenge L ack of capacity in governmental and professional structures tasked to implement infrastructure projects is one of the main challenges faced by the construction industry in Africa, resulting in issues with the delivery of quality products within the specified time and budget, payment issues and so on, says Frans Pienaar of Inyatsi Construction. “These issues impact on the industry. Slow delivery of projects and delays in coming to market cause increased costs, with the lack of capacity in implementing agencies placing an additional burden on a private sector that is already struggling with cash flow,” he says. The sub-standard quality of products, fading out of competitor and small construction

companies, a drop in infrastructure development and the monopoly in the market that follows on this: all have an adverse impact on the construction industry. However, Pienaar says, the construction industry can overcome these challenges. “The basic standards in the construction industry are the Standard Conditions of Contract, as well as some Standard Specifications, which are mainly enforced through an out-dated model requiring clients to be advised by professionals or teams of professionals. “The model should rather evolve towards a more modern form that involves a team of all the stakeholders in a project. It should focus on the delivery of a fit-for-purpose product

and satisfying the client’s need, rather than external factors such as professional pride and industry envy.” According to Pienaar the best way to enforce these standards is through self-regulation. “Delivery liability should be as close to the implementer of a project as possible.” Pienaar believes that public-private-partnerships (PPP’s) and turnkey-type projects can also be used to ensure that risk is managed by the parties best suited to do this. However, he is worried that industry bodies are too fragmented to ensure efficient selfregulation. “South Africa is trying to maintain its role as the thought leader in the construction industry in Africa, but industry bodies lose their rel-

evance as the emerging markets develop and want to stand on their own feet, bypassing those bodies Enquiry no: 3 in order to achieve their objectives.”

ASF and AkzoNobel have reached a general agreement on the sale of the industrial coatings business of BASF’s Coatings division to AkzoNobel for €475 million. The transaction would include technologies, patents and trademarks, as well as the transfer of two dedicated production sites, one in Deeside, England, and one in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa. BASF and AkzoNobel intend to finalize and sign detailed transaction documents in due course. The planned transaction is subject to the required consultation with employee representatives and certain regulatory approvals. BASF and AkzoNobel intend to complete the transaction by the end of 2016. BASF’s industrial coatings business generated sales of approximately €300 million in 2015 and supplies products for a number of end uses, including coil, furniture foil and panel coatings, as well as coatings for wind energy plants, general industry and commercial transport. “We have successfully developed our global industrial coatings business over the last years with a clear focus on attractive market segments. New additions to locally manufactured compound range C ontinental Compounders (Pty) Ltd has expanded its range and product offering by adding polypropylene (PP) and nylon (PA66 and PA6) to its local compound range. As part of its efforts to meet the demand for engineering polymers, the company has opened a specialized production site for engineering polymers, situated in Westmead, KwaZulu-Natal. Commenting on the expansion of its range, George Dimond, CEO of Continental said: “We have been manufacturing PVC compounds for various industry segments for the past 12 years. We are very proud to be in the position where we are now able to expand our service offering to our new and existing customers with a new range of engineering polymers that consist of local content. Adding this new line of compounds to our product range

is in line with Continental’s commitment to quality, innovation and service”. Dimond explains that the new compounds will come in different variations, such as: • Mineral filled Talc and Calcium Carbonate: 20% to 50% • Glass fibre reinforced: 20% to 50% • Impact modified • Flame retardant: Halogen and halogen-free systems • Concentrates and Master batches • Combination filled grades, such as mineral filler and glass fiber, flame retardant and glass fiber, impact modifier and glass fiber will also be available. Customer service and product quality are of utmost importance to Continental. To this end, they have made a significant financial investment into expanding and upgrading

their specialised, technical service laboratory aimed specifically at product testing and new product development for both local and international customers. “We have invested a significant amount of technical innovation and intellectual capital into this highly geared laboratory in order to offer our customers world-class technical service, research development and a continuous supply of top quality compounds,” Dimond said. The expanded testing facility is capable of performing various new tests in the engineering polymer field, including: • MFI (Melt Flow Index) • Vicat • Ash content • HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) Continental Compounders is committed to the principles and requirements of the International Standard,

ISO 9001:2008, and manufactures to ISO quality management systems, which ensures that they maintain

the highest standards at all times. They are also one of the founding members of SAVA (Southern African Vinyls Association), and support the association’s drive towards international best practice for PVC products and processes. These include the safe use of additives, notably Heavy Metal Free (HMF) stabilisers and pigments, expanding recycling capacity and programmes, and developing new and sustainable applications in PVC. Concludes Dimond: “This has been a dream that has long been in the making. Continental Compounders is driven by the pursuit of local content, with the resultant beneficiation of local resources." "We are thrilled about expanding our product offering and range of polymers to our customer bases, in addition to growing an already impressive export base. Our investment in infrastructure and technology prove that, as a company, we continue to believe that both our continent and our country face an exciting future, and that we are ready for the opportunities that come our way”.

Railway certification on track T he recent EN 15085 certification of Transnet Engineering Durban (Cl 1 – critical components) and VR Laser Services (CL 2 – non-critical components) has set the process of EN 15085 certification firmly on track in South Africa. EN 15085 is the quality standard that relates specifically to the welding of railway vehicles and components and has the requirements of iso 3834 as a basis. Iso 3834 mostly has general requirements specified in the standard, whereas en 15085 builds on iso 3834 and specifies specific requirements relating to, inter alia, railway vehicle and component welding. Saiw certification will manage the certification process in South Africa in a joint venture with germany’s gsi slv, one of the world’s experts and an anb for EN15085 certification. “As there is no certification body in South

Africa we will work with gsi slv to certify companies who want to take advantage of the major railway projects coming on stream in South Africa,” says Herman Potgieter, SAIW Certification GM. He adds that with this joint venture in place South Africa has all the necessary building blocks to meet the requirements of EN 15085. “We have the appropriate training and certification programmes in place and the fact that two leading companies - Transnet Engineering Durban and VR Laser Services –have already gone through the process must encourage other relevant companies who need this certification.” Potgieter says that the difficulty is that for many of the South African companies that have traditionally manufactured components for railway applications, there may be a big jump from their current quality level to

that required by the EN 15085. “But I cannot stress enough that if South African manufacturers can’t meet the required standard, it is doubtful that the international original equipment manufacturers will put their name on inferior quality product and will then source these components from suitable overseas suppliers." "To make the most of the imminent and massive railway projects, EN 15085 certification is essential,” he says. Potgieter says that in gsi slv, saiw certification could not have found better partners. Germany is one of the leading welding nations and gsv slv is one of Germany’s best. “It is interesting that Germany has more companies certified to EN 15085 than to ISO

3834 and that China, who will be central in the railway initiative in South Africa, has also taken the reigns and is following Germany with many chinese companies being certified,” Potgieter says. Enquiry no: 7

New port security system

T

ransnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has introduced a state-of-the-art port security system valued at R843 million to safeguard customer cargo, port users, as well as Transnet’s own port assets, staff and contractors. Richard Vallihu, Chief Executive at TNPA, said: “The National Ports Act 12 of 2005 and the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code of 2004 dictate that we as a port authority implement measures to assist in detecting security threats and take preventative measures against security incidents that may affect ships or port facilities used in international trade.” Phumuzi Sigasa, head of TNPA’s Port Security Portfolio added: “In conformance with regulations and our own Integrated Security Management Systems - Security Strategy Plan, we are rolling out an upgraded security system across our eight South African commercial ports and our head office in Johannesburg. CCTV is but one aspect of our broader integrated technological security system which encompasses technology, skills, systems and procedures.” The CCTV system will be integrated between all port sites and the head office to give a bird’s eye view of the port security environment. It comprises 2100 high definition cameras across the various sites – more than double the previous 864 – as well as long range cameras to monitor all port channel entrances and outer anchorages. The newly renovated control room located at

the Port of Durban was the first to go live on 12 February 2016. It boasts state-of-the-art video walls for added visibility across the port. Vehicle security within the port perimeters will also be enhanced through license plate recognition. The system will also facilitate increased night visibility through thermal imaging that can detect heat emitted by objects or bodies, especially in low visibility areas and through smoke, fog and haze. Some of the most common security incidents in South African ports can include stowaways, theft of cargo and damage or theft of assets owned by Transnet and other port users. The high-tech security system will further entrench the position of South African ports as “smartpeoplePORTS”. Other notable “smart” port systems include the web-based Integrated Port Management System (IPMS) which was rolled out across all eight ports in 2015, enabling key port operations to be managed online and in real time. Transnet is also looking at ways to make the ports more “people centric” and accessible to Enquiry no: 8 the public.

outh Africa is in the throes of a water crisis as it faces drought and water scarcity across the country. Committed to assisting the drought-stricken area of Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal, Engen Petroleum has joined forces with Cargo Carriers, Oasis Water and Water Shortage South Africa (#WSSA 2016) to help supply water to the Klipfontein Water Treatment Plant in Vryheid. Water is filtered and treated at the plant to ensure quality levels. The water then flows to the municipal pipes in the area, which directly supplies a Vryheid community that has been experiencing severe water shortages for some time now. Director of Oasis Water, Koos de La Rey says they came up with a logistics solution which they are very excited about. “Rather

than fill up and deliver bottles of water individually, we fill up trucks with bulk water from our Witbank site, which we then deliver to the plant in Vryheid,” he says. According to Andre Jansen Van Vuuren, Marketing Director at Cargo Carriers, the first 32 000 litre load was delivered on 26 January. “Since then we’ve managed to deliver a load a day. With partners like Engen and Oasis Water on board, we are able to continue delivery. Our plan is to transport 32 000 litres a day for the remainder of the week.” Engen’s part in the initiative is to provide ‘fuel assistance’ and keep the water trucks on the road. Mike Stead, Commercial Business Manager at Engen says, “Water shortages are an ever-urgent priority and Engen is proud to be playing our part by contributing 400 litres of Enquiry no: 9 fuel per trip.”

‘Boxing On’ in Cato Ridge

fter 10 years of working together, it’s no surprise that Pick n Pay-owned Boxer Superstores has chosen Goscor Lift Truck Company (GLTC) to provide the new warehouse equipment for its new, state-ofthe-art, distribution centre (DC) in Cato Ridge, KZN. “Even though we have worked together with Goscor for so long, our decisions are never automatic,” says Boxer’s logistics and distribution manager, Clinton van Rooyen. “Boxer is famous for giving its customers the best quality and prices and, to be able to do this, we have to control costs on an ongoing basis. That’s why we constantly look at the lifetime costs of our capital equipment like forklifts and other warehouse equipment and Goscor has consistently, over the years, come out tops in this regard.” He adds that “lifetime costs” is a holistic concept which takes into account a number of factors. “It includes the durability, productivity and efficiency of the machines, the inventiveness of the suppliers’ services and systems and the quality of the backup and maintenance service

when there are difficulties. In all these aspects Goscor’s performance has been outstanding,” van Rooyen says. For the new Boxer DC, Goscor supplied 4 x Crown SC5340-1.8 Electric 3 wheel forklifts, 4 x Crown GPC3040-2.0 low lever order pickers with platform lift, 5 x Crown ESR5260-2.0 11435mm lift height reach trucks all with the

world class Sunlight batteries and battery rollout systems. The Crown SCs will be used for loading and offloading trucks, containers and general material handling around the warehouse, the GPC’s will be used for stock picking while the ESR’s will be used for pallet storage in the racking. One of those innovative solutions that Goscor provides the Boxer DC is a full battery service, which includes an on-site battery bay and technician to ensure the most efficient ongoing battery utilisation. The new Boxer DC is in line with the Pick n Pay Group’s overall strategy of centralising distribution. It started operation during October 2015 and, according to van Rooyen, it will ensure that products reach Boxer stores with considerably shortened lead times. The Cato Ridge DC is not Boxer’s first attempt at warehousing. For the past four years the division has been running a smaller warehouse out of Prospecton, south of Durban, with outstanding results. Blue vs Red - the way forward A N innovative forward-thinking approach had already paid dividends for KwaZuluNatal carpeting group Van Dyck Carpets, but PFE International director Dr Mehran Zarrebini believes shifting tactic to incorporate the world-renowned blue ocean strategy would escalate their success. Recently Zarrebini attended INSEAD Business School in Fontainebleau, France, to read blue ocean strategy at the world renowned Blue Ocean Strategy Institute. more companies entering the red ocean, the fewer opportunities exist for enhancing profitability. Unique products are benchmarked and the red ocean waters become increasingly bloody. Blue oceans are born either when companies create new industries or when companies start changing red oceans from within. Demand in blue oceans is created from zero. Kim and Mauborgne argued all successful companies have used the blue ocean strategy, which has little in common with traditional methods of competition in the red ocean, as the platform from which to lead future profitable growth. “One of the biggest attributes of the blue ocean concept is it challenges conventional wisdom of how businesses compete strategically. The key will be executing those principles into the business as strategy demands going beyond the existing industry boundaries,” Zarrebini said. He said companies traditionally focused on direct competitors, but the challenge was focusing on different industries and gaining a perspective outside that comfort zone.

It also demanded seeking out non-customers rather than existing ones. Furthermore, in a competitive industry, businesses commonly choose differentiation as a means to stand out from their competitors by providing premium value. The reality was market differentiation attracted costs and ultimately higher prices to customers. Two years ago Van Dyck Carpets embarked on a specific strategy that was now paying dividends, but Zarrebini said he intended to take the change process forward via the blue ocean approach. One example was the recently introduced recycled rubber tiles manufactured from recycled truck tyres. The raw materials were sourced within the PFE International Group and the finished product is a softer alternative to concrete pavers - easier to walk on and more suitable for different applications including children’s playgrounds, impact prone areas and residential estates. “We may have stumbled on a blue ocean without even realising and it look to launch the new product early in 2016,” he said.

FOCUS ON PACKAGING

Black on white: thermal oil heaters in printing D anaflex, one of Russia’s leading flexographic printing companies, makes use of modern printing technology that relies on HTT thermal oil heaters for accurate and constant process temperature. Flexographic printing is at its core a contemporary form of the letterpress and makes use of a flexible relief plate for printing. This style of printing can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including plastic, metallic film, cellophane and paper, and is most commonly used to print on the non-porous materials that are used in food packaging. In 2001, as part of its mandate to stay ahead of global printing trends, Danaflex began using the Soloflex, a flexographic printing machine from Windmöller & Hölscher, a highly regarded German manufacturer and distributor of machinery and equipment for flexible packaging.

Imperative for world class flexographic printing is supporting process temperature that is constant and, above all, precise. Airat Bashirov, Danaflex President, comments, “Flexographic printing is a highly sensitive process and all aspects must be taken into consideration. The availability of an accurate and constant process temperature is a factor of very great importance.” Windmöller & Hölscher is no stranger to this and employs the use of HTT thermal oil heaters. Experts in thermal oil, thermal oil systems, heat recovery and plant modernisation, HTT’s thermal oil systems supply safe, energy efficient process heat for a number of industries, including the chemicals, textile, food, metal, rubber, mineral oil, wood and printing industries. Specifically adapted thermal oil heaters built by HTT are highly flex-

ible, designed for specific applications, environmentally friendly and economical. “In the case of flexographic printing, solvent-based inks, varnishes and adhesives used are very liquid and in their press ready state, the ratio of liquid solvent to solid matter (dry ink) is 80:20,” notes Laetitia Botha, Product Engineer of Energas Technologies. “Once the ink, adhesive or varnish has been applied through the printing rollers, the substrate is fed through a dryer. It is at this point that it is heated and large volumes of air are blown over the substrate, depending on which, the air temperature can range between 40˚C and 180°C. In this case, an indirect heating method is used where ther-

Answer to static and highly dynamic pressure measurements

eller, leading manufacturer of measuring technology such as isolated pressure transducers and transmitters - represented in southern Africa by Instrotech - is setting new standards with their M5 series. All in all, the new sensor for static and highly dynamic measurements (up to 50 kHz) represents something totally unique when considering the operating

temperature range (up to 180 °C), measurement accuracy (±0,1 %FS), installation size (M5 connection), and the remote, precise signal conditioning (0... 10 V). The key to measuring highly dynamic pressure variance is to achieve, as far as possible, a direct connection between sensor element and medium. Keller’s development team has come up with a micromechanical solution

without media isolation diaphragm (with its damping effect), capillary tubing, sealants or adhesives. In the M5 series, the rear of the silicon sensor is soldered to a supporting element designed for excellent fluid dynamics, which in turn is secured flush at the front of the pressure connection. This sophisticated design enables dynamic measurements with a bandwidth of 0...50 kHz and offers a number of additional benefits. These include excellent decoupling of mounting forces and structure-borne vibration, extensive media compatibility and the durability offered by the anti-oxidation coatings. Other impressive features of the M5 series are its overpressure protection of up to five times the measurement range and its pressure connection with an external thread of just Ø 5 mm for installations in space-limited locations. The pressure sensors in the M5 series are intended for operating temperatures between -40 °C and +180 °C with a narrow total error band (i.e. including temperature errors) of ±1%. Without the remote signal converter, they come with a typical output signal range of 80 mV (based on a 1 mA supply) and an individual calibration certificate. The 3 bar, 10 bar and 30 bar measurement ranges are available for absolute pressure measurements. Separating the pressure sensor and the signal converter enables measurements at close proximity, even in units installed in cramped conditions and exposed to high Enquiry no: 22 temperatures.

he Fluxus G series of ultrasonic gas flow meters sets a new industry benchmark for non-intrusive clamp-on flow metering of gaseous media. While the traditional approach has been to cater for a range of liquid to gas flow metering with a single transducer technology, Flexim has developed a specific technology to cater for the accurate and reliable ultrasonic flow measurement of gases over a wide turndown ration. The Fluxus G series is available from local distributor Peter Jones Electronic Equipment, which falls under the Actum Industrial division of the Actum Group. The group is a specialist distributor of niche electronics products for high-end industries and applications that has diversified into mining, general industry and a range of other sectors. Robert Howes, technical sales manager at Peter Jones, explains that the Fluxus G series of gas flow meters is available as either portable or permanent versions. Applications are wide-ranging, from gas exploration to transportation and storage, as well as industrial processing. “The critical criteria of any gas flow meter are accuracy and reliability,” comments Howes. Flexim’s ultrasonic transducers are specifically matched and paired, and therefore guarantee a high zero stability, as well as high precision at low-flow velocities. With more than 1 000 measurement cycles a second and superior measurement algorithms embedded in the flow computer, together with the fact that the transducers are calibrated in-house or directly at the measurement point, means that Flexim’s clamp-on systems are not less accurate than inline gas flowmeters, but much more reliable, as they do not suffer from wear and tear inside the pipe,” explains Enquiry no: 24 Howes.

New pressure measurement innovations

T

he process control industry is often challenged with harsh operating environments where existing technology does not meet measurement needs. Emerson has leveraged their pressure expertise and industry field experience to tackle these tough measurement challenges. First, the new Rosemount 3051S Thermal Range Expander with new UltraTherm 805 oil fill fluid enables pressure measurements by direct-mounting a diaphragm seal system to processes that reach up to 410°C (770°F) without requiring the challenging impulse piping or heat tracing used in traditional connection technology. In applications where ambient temperatures drop below ideal operating conditions, system response time becomes slow, resulting in delayed process pressure readings. Traditionally, this problem is solved by using heat tracing which is costly, maintenance intensive, and difficult to install. By using the new thermal range expander dual fill fluid seal, the Rosemount 3051S can reliably measure pressure at extremely high process and low

ambient temperatures. Secondly, the Rosemount 3051S Electronic Remote Sensors (ERS ) System now has safety certification. The ERS System calculates differential pressure through a digital architecture -- and is now suitable for SIL 2 and 3 applications. Manufacturers have challenges installing and maintaining traditional mechanical systems due to line plugging and ambient temperature effects. This leads to inaccurate measurements and fluctuations. ERS systems solve this problem by replacing filled capillaries with an innovative digital connection, providing a stable and reliable measurement in safety applications. The solution delivers improved performance and response time, and helps end users eliminate mechanical DP level systems. Finally, the new Rosemount 3051S High Static Differential Pressure Transmitter provides reliable flow measurement in high pressure applications with capabilities up to 15,000 psi (1034 bar). Energy efficiency in farming – no longer a nice to have but a crucial necessity

arming in South Africa, as in many parts of the world, is faced with severe drought conditions and steadily increasing costs on all fronts. Labour, infrastructure, equipment, transport, energy, livestock and seed stock are becoming more and more expensive. Farmers’ need to counterbalance these threats requires new business strategies to reduce operating costs, compete more effectively and comply with increasingly strict environmental standards whilst increasing productivity and improving quality. As a result, Eskom has been doing extensive research on energy efficient farming and how to best support South Africa’s farmers and all other types of agro-businesses with energy efficiency advice. Agriculture – farming operations plus the processing, packaging and other support industries comprising the sector - consumes 6 000GWh (gigawatt hours) of electricity per year, 4% of the national total. Although far less than the 148 000GWh consumed by the industrial sector, powering the agricultural sector is of strategic importance to the long-term socio-economic wellbeing of our country. Apart from the fact that millions of people are directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, the sector is key to our nation’s food security and foreign currency-generating food exports. 49M, the local movement that calls on all South Africans to switch to energy efficient business practices and lifestyles, encourages farmers to conduct energy use assessments as a starting point to improving the energy efficiency of their operations. Through this assessment process, data on a farm’s energy consumption and associated costs can be collected and analysed as a basis for change on four fronts: changing energy use behaviour; streamlining opera-

Project in Action

A

tions; improving maintenance procedures; and switching to energy efficient technologies, including renewable energy solutions. Energy use assessments typically analyse electricity bills, usage data and all electric equipment and processes specific to the operation of a particular farm. Likely recommendations for technology retrofits and equipment upgrades could include: • Lighting – optimising inefficient lighting systems by fitting energy efficient component alternatives such as Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), T-5 systems, electronic control gear, lighting sensors and daylight harvesters. • Motors – replacing outdated, inefficient or over-sized motors with energy efficient alternatives and installing Variable Speed Drives

(VSDs), where applicable. • Pumps – replacing inefficient pumps with energy efficient alternatives and operating them in an optimal configuration with correctly sized motors and VSDs, where applicable. • Renewable energy – utilising alternative energy sources such as solar water heating systems, micro-hydro schemes and photovoltaic installations. Importantly, and as a starting point, farmers are advised to check which electricity tariff they are billed at; there could be an opportunity to reduce energy costs by moving to a more cost effective structure. Moreover, shifting energy intensive operations outside periods of peak demand for electricity could mean paying lower tariffs.

n Eskom Energy Advisor conducted an energy use assessment on the farm of Kosie and his son Manie Eloff outside Soekmekaar in Limpopo Province. The assessment showed that irrigation accounts for 61% of their electricity bill. The Eloffs’ have 14 pumps of varying sizes, some of which could save electricity by using Variable Speed Drives. Costly, and a new technology in the eyes of many farmers, Kosie and Manie decided to go ahead and invest in a VSD. The installation reduced energy demand from 18,9kW to 13,2kW, a saving of almost 30%. Due to this improvement in energy efficiency, Kosie and Manie Eloff are now investigating the savings potential of the other 13 pumps on the farm as well. With agriculture – here and across the world - grappling with the need to produce more and more food for both human and animal consumption in the face of rising operating costs and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, Eskom will always consider the sector as strategically important and keep on working hard to make a contribution towards turning it electricity smart - one farm and one agrobusiness at a time. Eskom’s national Advisory Service can help locate technology suppliers, advise farmers on energy reduction and help identify funding opportunities for energy efficiency projects.

onnections into steel pipework systems are still welded in many heating and cooling systems and industrial applications. This is not only time-consuming and laborious, but there is also the risk of fire due to an open flame or sparks, especially in confined or hazardous environments. With Viega Megapress technology, thickwalled steel pipes in nominal diameters of 15mm (½”) to 50mm (2”) can now be pressed within seconds. The company claim assembly time is reduced by up to 60 per cent compared with welding procedures. Pipe connections in building services such as heating & air conditioning, sprinklers and fire protection and compressed air and gas delivery no longer need to be soldered, screwed or welded. Instead, they are “cold” pressed – a much more economical methodology due to the faster processing time, as well as being more secure as there is no requirement for open flame. For thick-walled steel pipes in accordance with SANS 62 medium and heavy and ASTM Schedule 40, these processing advantages could not be exploited up to now as the external diameter of the pipes exhibit considerable dimensional tolerances. Viega has now developed a practical solution with the “Megapress” system. A special profile-sealing element made of EPDM is now integrated into steel connectors made from material 1.0308 (St 37) with a zinc-nickel coating. In combination with a cutting ring, this ensures a durable, impermeable and friction-locked connection on the rough surface of black, galvanised, painted or epoxy resin-coated steel pipes. The time saving of the new press connection technology for steel pipes is considerable. Depending on the external nominal bore (15 (1/2”mm – 50mm( 2”)), this can be up to 60 per cent in comparison with conventional connecting processes such as welding, clamping or screwing. In addition Megapress connectors offer security against forced leakage in an unpressed state due to the SC- Contour. Inadvertently unpressed connections become visible during the leakage test and can be pressed even under pressure, making the connections permanently sealed. Working with the “Megapress” system is not just more secure for the fitter or technician but also does not require the same skills or effort as welding. Typical steel pipe installations for compressed air, industrial gases, fire extinguishing and sprinkler systems are often several metres high, positioned below ceiling slabs or roof trusses. Welding in inaccessible positions requires effort and can be dangerous. With Viega pressing tools, the connection can be pressed effortlessly above the fitter’s head. Viega supplies the accessories in a practical case, which includes three press jaws (12mm – 25mm), three press rings for nominal diameters of 32mm – 50mm and Enquiry no: 31 hinged press jaws.

Modern-day sewerage systems require expertise and reliability R apid urbanization is resulting in an urgent requirement for upgraded sewerage systems in cities throughout Africa where authorities are realizing the importance of reliable and efficient pumps to cope with ever-higher volumes on an around-the clock basis. In addition, authorities are increasingly calling on technical expertise to assist in the design and optimisation of pumping systems in order to design sewerage works that are robust enough to deal with daily peaks and troughs, as well as meeting challenges as a result of weather anomalies, storm water ingress and even drought conditions. At the forefront of sewerage pumping technology is local manufacturer KSB Pumps and Valves with a full range of products designed and manufactured especially to meet the industry’s requirements, as well as being rugged enough to handle African conditions. Technical expertise is also available to design and manufacture bespoke systems where required or to lend technical assistance and advice to local authorities. KSB water and waste water projects and applications manager, Hendrik Enslin, says that nowadays technical advice and support is equally as critical as choosing the right system

and design in the first place. With the right system sewerage works should be able to cope with almost any eventuality and remain reliable for more than 20 years. “In recent times municipalities and water authorities across Africa have moved away from a purely cost-based procurement model to rather focus on procuring systems and expertise from local manufacturers with a long

Commanding water savings in severe drought conditions

s South Africa remains in the grip of its most devastating drought in three decades, water-intensive industries are under more pressure than ever to conserve this precious resource more efficiently. With capital budgets also under strain, the i-Commander control and telemetry device offers an ideal solution to this ongoing crisis. The i-Commander is exclusively available in the local market through Filter Focus, and provides the end-user with the convenience of monitoring and controlling water levels, temperature and possible contaminations remotely via a cellular phone sim card. This makes it ideally-suited to numerous applications, including; water and wastewater treatment plants, municipalities, water utilities, agriculture and mining – which are all currently under pressure to do more to reduce wastage. Filter Focus product engineer Drew Leibbrandt explains that users can enter

numerous contact numbers onto the system that will receive short message texts should anything go wrong. “The device sends alerts directly to any cellular phone number. It will first send a text, followed by a call. The time and date of the initial incident, and when it was resolved, will also be stored onto the system’s history, and the user will be able to trace which numbers the alerts were sent to.” According to Leibbrandt, the i-Commander dramatically reduces costs related to investing in large capital-intensive programmable logic controller (PLC) technology, and on time spent on physical monitoring. “With the i-Commander, preventative inspection trips only need to be carried out occasionally, as the user has access to all vital system information at the palm of his hands.” The i-Commander can be used on

13

almost any equipment, including; cool rooms, power supply, pivots, boilers, pumps and generators. “A wide variety of devices or conditions can be monitored, controlled and reported on by a single i-Commander through customisation. If an operation expands, it is possible to add multiple i-Commanders to the system too,” adds Leibbrandt. Other costly failures such as oil damage to gearboxes can be avoided with the i-Commander, which is also able to control moisture in pumps and reservoirs through an attached sensor. Filter Focus pre-sets the i-Commander its clients’ particular needs, and also provides training for those who are interested in operating the device independently. The i-Commander is battery-powered, can be charged directly from a standard electrical outlet and only requires a positive airtime balance to make calls and send messages. Enquiry no: 33

Motion operated stand pipe

he locally manufactured Water Widget is a motion operated standpipe for free water supply, especially to rural areas where water availability is at a premium and ensures a marked decline in water wastage. The stand pipe is installed in a concrete slab; the water mains are connected at the bottom of the stand pipe, which is protected by this concrete slab. Simply turning the hand wheel opens a diaphragm valve allowing the water to flow from the outlet spout which is at a height sufficient to allow a 25 liter container or bucket to be filled. When motion stops, the water flow stops. The standpipe is constructed from hot dipped galvanized steel and consists of simple and easily serviced components. The design is completely mechanical, and contains no magnetic solenoids. The design is modular with all components screwed together facilitating easy on site servicing.

atal Pumps Services announces the new Viking XPD 676 series internal gear pumps, designed to be in full compliance with the API 676 design specification for rotary positive displacement pumps used in oil, gas and petrochemical service. They offer three levels of compliance, to satisfy a variety of customer needs. First is the Universal Seal series pumps. These internal gear pumps offer cast steel construction with cartridge seals that conform to API 682/ISO 21049 category 1 (chemical and petrochemical industry), but have many other exceptions to the standard. While this has satisfied many users, others demanded the full range of API 682/ISO 21049 seals. They then added the feature of cartridge seals conforming to Categories 2 and 3 (oil and gas industry pumps) of API 682/ISO 21049. This uses a different bracket (power frame) with larger bearing housing than the stand-

ard pump, because the diameter of the API 682/ ISO 21049 seal is larger than that of standard seals. This model also has other exceptions to the standard. Finally, to satisfy customers who wanted no exceptions, the new XPD 676 Series was designed to comply with all provisions of the API 676 standard, which states that pumps shall be “designed and constructed for a minimum service life of 20 years and at least three years of uninterrupted operation.” Features include: • Minimum 25,000 hour bearing L10 life at the pumps’ maximum rated flow and pressure • Additional 3 mm corrosion allowance over and above the casing thickness needed for the maximum allowable casing pressure (MACP). • API 682/ISO 21049-compliant cartridge seals • Jacketed casing and bracket stand-

Set to become first choice for drainage

I

ntegrated Pump Technology has announced the launch of the Grindex Maxi H-Lite drainage pump. With its slim design and robust construction it is set to become the pump of first choice for site drainage applications all over the African continent, according to Colin Adams, managing director of Integrated Pump Technology. “The pump is ideally suited for use in confined spaces and with its reduced weight, the Maxi H-Lite is expected to have a positive effect on operational, maintenance and life cycle costs,” Adams says. As a world leader in electrical submersible pumps and an organisation constantly looking for ways to improve pumping efficiency and reliability, Grindex built on the performance successes of the popular Maxi pump during the product development phase of this new drainage pump. The new Maxi H-Lite pump’s design is based on the wellproven hydraulics of the popular Maxi pump, and Adams says that improvements made to the pump will see end users benefitting significantly. “The new drainage pump, with

its 25 kW motor, will fill the gap between the Matador (18 kW) and Maxi (37 kW) pumps, and this is most important for those customers who need this size of pump,” he says. Reliable operation is, as always, one of the most important considerations when it comes to drainage applications, and taking cognisance of this the Maxi H-Lite pump is fitted with a redesigned and optimised top cover and new generation cable entry. This will ensure that the junction chamber remains free of wateringress. The hydraulic part features the same adjustment sleeve as used in Grindex’ Minex and Matador pump ranges and this facilitates re-adjustment of the impeller-suction-cover-clearance allowing performance to be regained after wear. Adams says this is a significant feature for customers assisting in keeping life cycle costs low. The Maxi H-Lite is available with an open impeller, and this can be in either Hard Iron or in stainless steel.

Pumping solutions for renewable energy

ulzer Pumps’ aim of becoming the dominant supplier of pumping solutions for concentrated solar power (CSP) is being realised with the awarding of multiple contracts across the globe. Utilising its considerable global expertise, the company continues to design and manufacture pumping solutions for the complex processes within these plants wherever the requirement for precision manufacturing is of a primary concern. Similarly, Sulzer Pumps South Africa has been awarded contracts to supply full solutions for local solar power plants that are currently planned or under construction. The advantages of the pumps being supplied by a local South African company are numerous and will give the local operation’s design teams the ability to showcase their abilities within the global arena. “Sulzer Pumps is a company with a global footprint and its branches from Spain, Germany and India will make a contribution to bringing these projects to a successful conclusion,” says project manager Henno Raaths. “Sulzer Pumps South Africa will however take the full lead in terms of engineering

and supply of the highly sophisticated equipment.” The recent rise in local renewable energy projects include advanced solar power plants using CSP technology. CSP operations require a special heat transfer fluid (HTF) or molten salts to be circulated around a solar heat absorber and pumped to a special heat exchanger which converts water to steam and effectively makes up the conventional steam cycle. HTF pumps specifically, are manufactured for high temperature applications that include thermal transients and sealing of flammable and hazardous fluids under extreme cyclic operating conditions. With experience in HTF pumps dating back to 1985, Sulzer Pumps has a vast understanding of the requirements and operating philosophies involved to produce pumps that can perform under such strenuous conditions.

HTF and solar heat transfer pumps will be based on the company’s new HZB range which is able to pump liquids at temperatures in excess of 400oC, pressures of more than 50bar and flows in the region of 4000m³/ hour. In order to provide fully engineered pumping solutions covering entire solar power plants the company is also supplying feed water pumps, HTF overflow pumps and water condensate extraction pumps complete with sealing systems, drives, motors and instrumentation. T

he stagnating local economy and a depressed oil price are shifting petrochemicals production emphasis from capital purchases towards a strategy of effective machinery maintenance. One company well positioned to supply it is Aespump, the authorised channel partner and service provider for Sundyne, Sunflo, Ansimag and HMD pumps and compressors. Aespump offers a multi-faceted s e r v i c e strategy which manages the equipment l i f e c y c l e through process c h a n g e s resulting from legislated industry compliance, changes in standards, and changes in the process itself. “All of these can cause a chain reaction of events and adversely affect key efficiency points, resulting in increased power consumption, suction or discharge recirculation, temperature rise and/or cavitation,” explained sales and marketing director Neil Britz. “The solution is an on-site re-rating service, accomplished without disrupting the process piping or installation, that ensures the Sundyne pump or compressor is operating at best efficiency point. “We compare the original design conditions with the current situation, after which we re-rate the machine to achieve the required performance, specify the parts required, install them, carry out an operational performance test and then re-start the pump or compressor within the process itself. “The customer receives a revised expected performance curve and specification sheet,

and an updated bill of materials for his records,” said Britz. Two other important elements of the Aespump service offering are uptime assurance and offsite service support, the latter providing for machine services at Aespump’s workshops. Uptime assurance is a continuous improvement programme assisted by Sundyne’s reliability assurance kits (RAKs), portable packs containing essential service parts for pumps and compressors, including all design data, drawings and parts lists. The kits focus on maintaining gearboxes and wet ends, and contain either a standard inventory or one customised with content matched to the unique serial numbers of individual Sundyne machines. They ensure that the customer has the exact parts needed for planned production shutdowns, maintenance or critical repairs, providing a cost effective means to keep the pump or compressor operating at peak efficiency while maintaining the warranty. RAKs are re-equipped using a single parts number linked to the original equipment serial number, eliminating the need to track dozens of numbers in the customer’s ERP system. Typical RAK contents cover recommended spare parts lists for a Sundyne LMV/BMP pump, Sunflo pump or Sundyne LMC/ BMC compressor, and include output seal, breather, bearings, bearing plate, anti-rotation plate and optional lubrication pump, as well as specification sheets and performance curves. The recently published SANS 9000:2015 Quality Management Systems - Fundamentals and vocabulary and SANS 9001:2015 Requirements belong to the ISO 9000 family of standards and therefore deal with quality control systems. “To become the best, and remain the best, organisations need a management system that helps them deliver the best products and services for the marketplace, while taking into account the needs of the environment in which they are working. Some of the foundations for a successful strategy is ISO 9001 for quality management,” says SAPPMA Chief

Executive Officer, Jan Venter. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental membership organization and the world's largest developer of voluntary International Standards. Through the SABS, South Africa is one of 162 member countries who are the national standards bodies around the world. To this end, SAPPMA was called upon to advise the SABS when it was considering the adoption of interna-

tional ISO standards as opposed to our home-grown standards. SAPPMA was able to point out to the SABS that without careful consideration of local conditions, the industry could end up with a standard that manufacturers could not test to, and that may also not be fully applicable. The revised standard is a system of policies, procedures and work instructions that were developed in order to control the processes that ultimately have a direct influence on the quality of products. Companies that implement this system, are subject to audits by accredited organisations such as the SABS. If they meet the minimum criteria of the ISO 9001 standards, they receive accreditation and are allowed to use the ISO 9001 mark on their products and in their marketing material. Enquiry no: 41

designed to replace manual work of water sector operators, allowing to perform easy and fast opening/ closing of water valves, penstocks and sluice gates. The range of Portable Valve Actuators catalogue includes two battery-operated units APB45N and APB60N, and two Honda engine-operated models APS100N and APS140N. These devices, made with light alloys coupled with last generation engines and components, represent the ultimate tool for operating in water regulation, irrigation and flow control. The main features of the APB/APS actuation devices are: • Easy to use: they don’t require any physical effort by operators; • Practical to handle: because of their light weight, portable actuators can be easily used in both horizontal and vertical position; • Reliable: all APB/APS tools have CE mark, including maintenance and operation manual and comply with Machine Directive 2006/42/CE currently in force. The system has been CE homologated and certified

for specific usage in water control sector; • Safe: integral friction body prevents damages to APB/APS device and to valve/penstock. Also, anti-rotation system avoids ‘snatch’ rotation of actuator when operating on valves and penstocks and prevents risks of injury to operators; • Completely self-contained: APB units work with Li-ion 36V batteries, while APS devices work with gasoline. There’s no need of electric power; • Waterproof: can be used in any environment; • Powerful: they guarantee quick and safe interventions on valves and penstocks with manual system. They represent a useful tool in emergency situations, when there is a power failure. Aumanat cc have secured the exclusive distribution rights for South Africa and owner, Peter Meyer, believes that the F.lli Scapin Portable Actuator will enhance their range of Electric, Pneumatic and Electro-hydraulic actuators, and proving the company offers a “Complete Valve Automation Enquiry no: 44 Solution”.

Water meter for instant measurements

nstrotech representing Elis, manufacturer and supplier of flow meters, has launched a battery-powered ultrasonic water meter intended for measuring flow rate instantaneously and pressure and consumption in water piping (standard EN 14154 for water works), water distribution systems and other industrial applications. The compact, highly accurate Elis Flomic FL5024 has long-term stability over a wide range of measured values, and conforms to the IP68 protection class. The meter does not need any external power supply, does not include

any moving parts and has significantly lower hydraulic losses. The technical parameters and other features of the Flomic water meter make it suitable not only for water consumption measurements but also for water-leak tracking and monitoring of the general condition of water-supply networks where the meter output signals can be connected via data transfer systems to remote computer control stations. The measurement method utilised by these meters is a single-beam

transit-time pulse method, based on evaluation of the time needed for an ultrasonic signal to cross the distance between two measuring transducers. In the standard version, the meter measures instantaneous flow rate (in m³/ hour) and the total volume of water passed through the meter (in m³) in the given flow direction. The measured data is converted into passive pulse output signals.

proven ability to manufacture in special steels is likely to win a South African pump company new business in West Africa, where a power station under construction needs corrosion resistant machines to pump seawater used for cooling. Johannesburg-based APE Pumps is proposing that the pumps be made from super duplex stainless steel, a material characterised by exceptional strength and very high resistance to corrosion. The company has previously supplied a number of these super duplex machines into seawater applications, where they have successfully withstood conditions of extreme corrosion and abrasion for many years. Most recently, in October last year, APE Pumps supplied five identical split-case pumps cast entirely in super duplex stainless steel to an abalone farm near Gansbaai. Divisional manager Dave Johnson said that the company would open a branch in West Africa should its tender for the

power station pumps prove successful. “We will need a physical presence there to help with machine installation, and to provide service and support after the pumps are commissioned,” Johnson explained. “There will be six pumps in total, all of them vertical turbine machines for cooling water applications, and three of them very large units transferring 30 000 cubic metres of seawater per hour at a head of some 20 metres,” he said. Johnson said that APE Pumps considers its chances of securing the contract quite good, not only because of the company’s capability to manufacture pumps in special steels such as super duplex, but also because of its long history of successful installations throughout Africa and the Middle East. APE’s vertical turbine pump family can be designed for any type of drive, and can be used in most industrial and agricultural applications. ISO certification

ocla has been certified ISO 9001:2008 compliant after an audit by TÜV Rheinland Inspection Services was conducted in November 2015. The audit covered Rocla’s design, development, manufacturing and delivery of precast concrete products processes for the infrastructure sector. Rocla’s Quality Assurance Manager, Vernon Gounden commented “We are delighted to have received international recognition by our compliance to ISO 9001:2008 standards. It enables Rocla to meet SABS requirements as well as enabling us to meet tender requirements.” “All of our products and processes were audited by TÜV Rheinland Inspection Services who audited our Roodepoort, Virginia and Newcastle sites. Slurrysucker to optimise water storage

S

EDIMENT in process ponds and reservoirs is a serious concern, especially with the current drought conditions that are afflicting South Africa. Lee Vine, managing director of Integrated Pump Rental, says severely silted up process water dams and ponds negatively impact the water storage capacities on a plant or mine, and affect all downstream processes. Launched less than twelve months ago, the innovative SlurrySucker Dredge Unit is capable of extracting high tonnages of silt and built-up sediments at a fraction of the money required to shut down downstream and upstream processes to clean out these types of water storage facilities. Available on either short or longterm hire contracts, or as an outright purchase, the SlurrySucker is simple to use and two standard units are available. The SlurrySucker Mini is capable of extracting 120 m³ per hour of slurry/water mixture, equating to 30

Engineered as a robust, compact dredging unit, the SlurrySucker Dredge Unit can be easily transported on a standard road trailer, making it simple to move from pond to pond on a mine site. The units are engineered to be operated by a single person and where the necessary manpower is not freely available Integrated Pump Rental undertakes the pond or dam cleaning on a turnkey contract

to 40 dry tons per hour, while the larger SlurrySucker Maxi will remove between 70 to 80 dry tons per hour. The SlurrySucker Mini has a 100 mm discharge and the SlurrySucker Maxi has a 150 mm discharge. The SlurrySucker Dredge Units are manufactured using locally produced components and incorporate pumps from the respected Grindex slurry and dewatering range. During the development of the innovative dredging system use was made of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimise and validate the design.

basis. Integrated Pump Rental has the necessary technical skill to ensure that the pump selection matches the dredging operation requirement, and it could include either Grindex dewatering pumps where agitation of the slurry is required, or Grindex slurry pumps where there is a need to remove slurry from ponds or dams. Another very significant advantage is that the SlurrySucker Dredge Unit can be used on plastic lined dams without any damage to liners. Enquiry no: 49

Clairwood Logistics Park given the go ahead C onstruction of the R3,5 billion Clairwood Logistics Park will begin within the first quarter of 2016, creating much needed employment and business opportunities within the South Durban Basin. KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Michael Mabuyakhulu, recently gave the project the go ahead after his department found that the amended Environmental Impact Report (EIR) received from the Capital Property Fund in September 2014 complied with stringent regulations and adequately addressed concerns raised during an appeal. (Capital Properties has since merged with JSE listed Fortress Income Fund which will now develop the project). It found that public participation process followed in the EIA process was more than compliant with EIA regulations and it outlined stringent parameters for development in response to objections raised. As a result, appeals lodged in response to the environmen-

tal authorisation granted in May 2015 were dismissed and the original decision was upheld. The Clairwood Logistics Park will be located on the site of the former Clairwood Race Course which was purchased by the then Capital Property Fund in 2012 for R430 million. Fortress Income Fund intends developing approximately 350 000 square metres of warehousing with the remainder becoming paved yards to service the facilities.

The development will also include an eight hectare wetland which will be fully rehabilitated. “The Clairwood Logistics Park will not only meet growing demand for a grade logistics and distribution facilities in the south of Durban, but also improve the livelihoods of surrounding communities through job creation,” said Mr Nico Prinsloo the Fortress Income Fund’s Development Manager.

Need to allay concerns about ‘green building’

T

he Quantity Surveying profession is a key component of the construction supply chain - but all supply chain members have to share commitment and combine forces to make sustainable building more acceptable in South Africa, says Danie Hoffman (pictured), a professional member of the Association of SA Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS). Hoffman, the Progamme Leader of Quantity Surveying at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Construction Economics, is currently leading a study by ASAQS of the true cost of ‘green building’ for the Green Building Council of SA (GBCSA). The study - which is well advanced -

T

involves comparative costing of around 55 Green Star SA office buildings certified by the GBCSA between 2008 and 2014. According to Hoffman, one of the greatest challenges facing green building in South Africa is fear of the unknown, particularly costing. He says green building techniques are often perceived as expensive and challenging to execute - but this need not be the case, particularly when full life-cycle costing of building is added to the equation. “Life-cycle costing covers all the financial implications of building: from concept to end-of-life, and incorporates the costs of construction, materials, design, engineering, water and electric-

ity tariffs, heating and cooling, repair costs, and eventual disposal cost, or residual value. Quantity Surveyors, as cost consultants, will play an increasingly important role to inform decision makers on green building. However, the responsibility for cost-effective green building solutions will have to be shared between Quantity Surveyors and the entire supply chain: developers, designers, contractors, and endusers. “Quantity Surveyors are essential links in the supply chain as they are involved from initial design stage to the conclusion of construction processes, and can advise on the specification of construction materials, prepare and control budgets as well expenditure,” Hoffman explains. He believes educational institutions also have an important role to play to promote the cause of sustainable construction by informing the entire industry of the availability of sustainable materials and technologies, and the benefits of best practice. Call for entries for Steel Awards 2016

he Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) has called for entries for Steel Awards 2016, which will take place simultaneously in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town on 15 September 2016. The deadline for entries is Thursday 21 April 2016. However, a 10% earlybird discount is being offered for complete entries that arrive at SAISC on or before Thursday 14 April 2016. SAISC CEO, Paolo Trinchero, says that this a very special year for

the Steel Awards as it will be celebrating, inter alia, SAISC’s 60th year. “We expect that the industry will respond positively to this being the 60th year of the Institute’s existence and we expect more entries than ever. In spite of challenging times over the last couple of years there is no doubt that there are still many projects being done in and around South Africa that prove that the standard of steel construction in our region is as good as anywhere in the world.

We look forward to seeing them in Steel Awards 2016,” says Trinchero. He adds that the single main criteria of an entry into Steel Awards is whether the project illustrates clearly what can be achieved with steel. The main condition of entry is that the steelwork should essentially have been completed in 2015. The new facility is expected to create an estimated 18 900 jobs during the four year construction period and more than 4 600 permanent jobs after completion in December 2020. The South Durban Basin, in which the Clairwood Logistics and Distribution Park falls, is a national economic hub which consists of an industrial area interspersed with a residential population. The basin is bordered by major transport linkages. Market research has indicated that both national and international businesses have a desperate need for modern logistics facilities in close proximity to both the existing port and the proposed Durban Dig Out Port. CESA applauds legal decision

s an organisation that represents the interests of the consulting engineering industry, Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA), is always perturbed when matters that could impact on the wellbeing of the industry end up being decided upon in the courts of law. Following a judgement in favor of the City of Cape Town made by the Western Cape Division (WCD) of the High Court in April 2014, the effect of which would have precluded a consulting engineering company that had any involvement in pre-feasibility (upstream) work from the downstream phases of work. Subsequently, Aurecon, a CESA member firm, who had originally been involved in the matter decided to file

an application for leave to appeal the judgement with the Supreme Court of Appeal. The decision to do so was based on a principled standpoint on the very strict interpretation of the word “involved” in Clause 27(4) of the Municipal Finance Management Act No. 56 of 2003, by the City of Cape Town and subsequently the WCD of the High Court. If left unchallenged, not only would this have had significant negative implications for the Consulting Engineering industry but, South Africa indeed, ran the risk of the “upstream” phase of engineering, arguably the most important aspect of infrastructure and engineering services delivery being neglected, allowing for sub-optimal subsequent phases with

huge financial cost uncertainties with respect to the end product. Unfortunately due to the complexities of the legal process, with CESA not being in a strong enough position to be recognised as an “Amicus Curiae - Friend of the Court” in the matter, the Organisation was unable to become directly involved in the appeal. Mindful though of its concerns around the principled issues being argued on behalf of the Industry, it had always been in support of the stance taken by Aurecon. The appeal was heard in the Supreme Court of Appeal on the 21st of August 2015 and judgment was delivered in favor of Aurecon on the 9th of December 2015.

Pipeline for growth

s a leading producer and marketer of fuels, lubricants and oil-based products, Engen Petroleum’s vision for growth has reached another milestone in Zambia following the construction of an all new pipeline linking the Engen depot in Lusaka to the government facility. Jean-Blaise Ollomo, Managing Director of Engen Petroleum Zambia, says: “As Engen, our priority is to supply Lusaka as well as Southern Province and Eastern Province - particularly the capital, Chipata, which accounts for a large portion of Engen’s total fuel demand.” Engen has a total of 36 service stations in Zambia of which 19 are located in Lusaka and the southern part of the country. This additional pipeline injection will be critical in mitigating the fundamentals of price and supply. “The depot is very busy with a demand of 7 million litres of product per month. Reducing costs,

increasing supply and gaining an advantage for our largest commercial customer, will be a huge boost for our operations,” says Ollomo. The additional required supply is currently being received from Ndola, which is located in the Copperbelt. The Zambian government depot was built and commissioned in 2013 to help achieve a uniform pump price countrywide. Drikus Kotze, General Manager of Engen’s International Business Division says that sustainable growth in the region is Engen’s vision for 2016 and beyond “with keen benefits aligned to the company, the countries it services and the continent as a whole.” Engen Petroleum is an African based oil company whose core functions include the refining of crude oil and the delivery of world class retail convenience across the continent and the Indian Ocean Islands. CONSULTING ENGINEERS & PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Embracing cloud technology

asic business principles and cloud-based technology platforms need to be considered if the consulting engineering sector wants to stay afloat. In amongst a myriad of issues, the industry suffers significantly due to a chasm between the actual costs of a project versus the fees derived from scales that are quoted to win business. Simon Berry, (pictured) director, Fresh Projects, an online business management platform, says that it is critical that consulting engineers rely less on what is now a defunct feescale structure and rather find a new technology driven way to calculate appropriate fees. “There are too many consulting engineers who resort to offering heavily discounted project fees against the fee-scale structure, with-

out knowing the actual cost of the project. This effectively reduces profitability to unrealistic lows and makes for an uneven playing field. It is also dangerous as businesses make losses they are not necessarily aware of when quoting,” says Berry. This approach has such significant knock-on effects and does not bode well for the future of the industry in terms of general business growth, overall profitability and skills development. Understanding that there are time constraints when quoting and pressures to win business, Fresh Projects has developed a cloud-based business management solution that is tailor made for the South African built environment professionals. Berry says that it ensures the

financial sustainability of businesses and assists in understanding the real costs of a project: “Using the system will immediately enable the business to control their profitability and will enable the engineer to have an accurate benchmark with which to work for future projects.” Getting the costs right, according to Berry, is critical as the current trend of massive discounting will continue the downward spiral and result in massive damage to the industry and economy overall. He says that work supply could already be at a dangerous low based on the near completion of projects that started post the 2008 recession: “We find it useful to use the

civil engineering sector as a business barometer as they tend to lead the rest of the industry." "Most projects first start with civil’s enablement work such as roads, water and sewerage. This is then followed by other services such as structural, electrical, mechanical and architectural.” A significant drop seen in the civils sector, coupled with the fee-scale discounting issues will adversely affect the market. “Not only will there be less work, but the fees earned, based on uninformed discounting, will make it near impossible to declare any reasonable profits. This will not only kill an industry, but it also sends the skills within the industry packing.”

21

Berry says in a plight to be more fairly remunerated many engineers move into other sectors or immigrate to get better salaries and growth opportunities: “This adds to an already acute skills shortage within the engineering sector in South Africa.” Adding to the uncertainty, he says that the competition commission has been investigating the fee-scale practice for the past five years, which was banned in the United Kingdom over 20 years ago: “It is becoming more important that professionals rely less on feescales and work out their fees from basic business principles using an online system that makes the process not only seamless, but easy, quick and accurate.” Enquiry no: 60

ABB’s wide portfolio of different sizes of inverters, together with its other products for the solar industry, give customers an attractive one-stop shopping opportunity for packaged solutions for different sizes and types of plants.” The ABB PVS800-IS inverter station, rated from 1.75 to 2 MW, is designed for multi-megawatt PV power plants. The inverter station uses two 875 kW or 1,000 kW PVS800 central inverters. Depending on the size of the PV power plant, several ABB inverter stations can be combined to meet the needed capacity. With a wide list of approvals and with advanced and flexible grid support functions, the inverter station meets all the applicable network connection requirements, regardless of where the project is located. *REIPPPP Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Program Enquiry no: 61

Concrete wet pressing technology

he latest concrete wet pressing technology from Wil El Mil Engineering of the UK is distributed in Southern Africa by PMSA. Developed initially by hydraulic press manufacturer Fielding & Platt, the concrete wet pressing process was established in the 1890s. It has since become recognised as the process by which the highestquality concrete paving slabs and kerbs are made. While the process is well-established in markets such as the UK, it is still relatively new in South Africa, comments Tim Lodge, technical director at Wil El Mil Engineering. “The main advantage that this process holds for the African market is a dramatic improvement in the quality of the slabs and kerbs that

are produced, in addition to greatly reduced labour and floor-space requirements. Significant cement cost-savings make wet pressing a logical choice,” confirms Lodge. Wil El Mil Engineering, via PMSA, already has a footprint in South Africa, with plants up and running in Pretoria, Johannesburg and near Nelspruit. “We have enjoyed a close working relationship with PMSA since 2007. Through PMSA, we are also looking at expanding further into the African market,” Lodge reveals. The concrete wet pressing process involves compressing a wet concrete slurry under a hydraulic press to remove the excess water. Filters on either side of the concrete ensure that only water is extract-

ed, resulting in a fully-compacted material with a near optimum water/ cement ratio. A vacuum system removes the extracted water, resulting in a product that can be ejected from the mould and stacked for final curing. Production rates can be up to 120 kerbs/hour and more for slabs. Products typically manufactured by the wet pressing process comply with the most stringent national and international standards. Due to the superior durability of such products, they are often the standard choice for use in harsh environments, such as where regular freeze/thaw cycles and exposure to de-icing salts are experienced and where sulphate attack is an issue. Expertise on SA’s major asbestos mine rehabilitation project

G

lobal programme and construction consultancy Turner & Townsend is providing quantity surveying expertise as part of a major programme by the South African government to close and rehabilitate some 660 abandoned asbestos mines and shafts in various regions around the country. “So far we have worked with the SRK Consulting team on nine abandoned asbestos mine sites in the Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo,” says Gordon Bulmer, senior quantity surveyor of Turner & Townsend. “With three of these now closed and completed, we are currently involved on a further six mine sites, while we are preparing tenders on another three, with possible additional projects in the pipeline." “The projects vary in complexity, therefore a key requirement of being awarded the bid for the asbestos mines was our ability to provide the highest standard of quantity surveying expertise in a flexible and agile way." “While each mine site is different, the quantity surveyor in this particular government rehabilitation programme plays a key role– both in terms of advance planning as well as control or containment of costs throughout the projects.”

The rehabilitation programme falls under the Department of Mineral Resources, which appointed Mintek - a global leader in minerals processing and metallurgical engineering products and services, to provide the professional project management. SRK Consulting has taken the engineering design lead on these projects over the past three years, as a sub-contractor to Mintek, delivering the conceptual design, final design, quality control and project management. Chosen for its international track record and world-leading expertise, Turner & Townsend has been selected by SRK as one of the teams supporting the ongoing government programme. “We are involved in these projects from the very outset when the engineer draws up the preliminary design, from the point of preparing the tender document and putting a price to it for budgeting purposes, and again to financially manage the project." "This includes making monthly payment assessments, evaluating any changes in design or unexpected site conditions, through to final project completion,” says Bulmer. Enquiry no: 63

atch, a global engineering and consulting firm with expertise in the infrastructure, mining and metals, and energy sectors, has announced a strategic partnership with the World Council on City Data (WCCD), a world leader in standardised city data and metrics. Hatch and the WCCD will jointly promote the critical role that ISOcertified city data can play in developing new solutions for planning and infrastructure challenges faced by urban communities in the twenty-first century. The two organisations will also build innovative tools to map and analyse urban trends and associated city responses. As urbanisation around the world drives new and established cities to find ways to achieve their social and

economic goals more productively, understanding how cities can improve is key. “Hatch and the WCCD will provide a combination of practical, useful data and expertise on how cities can use this to meet their goals,” says Martin Doble (pictured), Hatch’s Global Managing Director of Infrastructure. As a WCCD lead partner, Hatch will join the WCCD Global City Leaders Advisory Board, chaired by Senator Art Eggleton, former mayor of Toronto. The WCCD is an initiative originally established in Ontario, Canada, while Hatch is a leading Canadian firm with project experience in more than 150 countries. “High-quality standardised data is key to

understanding the complex and interconnected challenges facing cities. Once understood, it is possible to identify practical and cost-effective solutions,” Professor Patricia McCarney, President and CEO of the WCCD and Director of the Global Cities Institute at the University of Toronto, comments. Hatch and the WCCD have already started working together on data analytics, opportunities to optimise infrastructure investment and growing the network of WCCD ISO-certified cities. Metropolitan areas in Asia, Europe, North America, South Africa and Australia are initially targeted as locations where comparable data in such areas as transportation, energy, environment, water, waste and emergency response will contribute to improved city planning and decision-making. salient pole synchronous alternator at its Xinavane mill near Maputo, Mozambique. The division carried out the complex

task at its Cleveland, Johannesburg, facility in just over three months. It involved a complete rewind of the rotor, which has a cruciform-type winding configuration. “It was complicated by the fact that we found it necessary to redesign the winding and insulation,” Craig Megannon, general manager at Marthinusen & Coutts, explains. “The original coil had developed a fault due to the fact that it had been vacuum pressure impregnated, which by forming it into a solid block caused differential expansion between the copper windings and the steel of the rotor body. We solved this problem by introducing thicker insulation and thinner copper windings, which were neither VPI’d nor glued to the pole body." “This achieved the desired result, as proven by the tests we carried out on the rotor windings on completion of the job,” Megannon says. hicago Pneumatic has introduced a host of new optional features to its CPDG mobile diesel-powered generator range, including higher capacity fuel tanks, road trailer options and a galvanised skid, to provide contractors with enhanced portability, toughness and extended run-times. The CPDG range is now available with a variety of tow bar and coupling combinations to fulfill the needs of different customers. Fully approved for use throughout the European Union, the new road trailer options mean the generators can be easily transported between sites without the need for major adaptations. A new optional galvanised skid has been introduced to add extra robustness to the base-frame of the generators.

Rectify power problems in even the harshest conditions

onsistently high standards of power delivery has been a commodity that the majority of organisations have taken for granted; until recent years. However, the reality is that even when supplied power is available and is seemingly stable, there are still minor variations that can occur that are sufficient to cause operational problems with a variety of equipment, in particular sensitive technology such as data centre solutions and servers. Add to this the challenge of now on-going power problems, and the issue becomes a far more significant one. Ensuring a consistent, clean power supply has become the responsibility of all businesses wishing to protect their equipment. Constant Voltage Transformers (CVTs) offer an affordable solution to assist local organisations across a variety of industries to protect their equipment both from everyday fluctuations as well as harsher power conditions. This is according to Marco Da Silva (pictured), Managing Director of Power Solutions, The Jasco Group.

CVTs are a type of ferro-resonant transformer, a highly robust technology that provides power filtering and voltage stabilisation. Power filtration is delivered through a process called galvanic isolation, which is created by isolated primary and secondary coils within the transformer. Voltage stabilisation is generated through the ferroresonance of the transformer. A CVT unit can perform a number of functions, including as a power filter, voltage stabiliser, isolation transformer and a harmonic filter, enabling it to rectify power sags, swells, dips, spikes and harmonics. It provides multiple functions around power conditioning to help organisations protect their equipment from dirty power, making it a very cost effective solution. CVTs are also highly robust technology, and are often called ‘bullet proof’ when dealing with harsh power requirements. This is as a result of the composition of the CVT, which allows the unit to resort to current limiting mode in the event of a power short.

Such a dead short, or immediate power cut, would usually either damage equipment or trip breakers, however a CVT can handle this extreme power problem by collapsing the output voltage to zero before the issue reaches connected equipment. The dead short can then remain indefinitely without damaging the CVT, which will continue to perform as expected once power is restored. It effectively acts as a barrier between harsh voltage swings, harmonics, dirty or noisy power, which are fed into the CVT, and ensures clean smooth output of the sinewave, which is then delivered to equipment. While CVTs have traditionally been utilised in the mining sector because of the need within this industry to deal with dirty power conditions on a regular basis, they are in fact applicable across a wide variety of sectors and all applications. Factories and industrial environments can make use of CVTs to filter power before it reaches equipment. IT environments can make use of the solution to filter power before it reaches sensitive equipment such as the data centre. Enquiry no: 67

It is specifically designed for applications where the unit will reside on uneven surfaces, or if needs be moved across the ground over short distances. To provide operators with the option of extended run times, CPDG generators can now be equipped with higher capacity fuel tanks, with 48 hour or 1000 litre variants available depending on the power mode. This, coupled with 500 hour service intervals, means CPDG generators are especially suited for applications where a generator is required to reliably run for a high number of hours with reduced attention from the operator. Chicago Pneumatic has also added a new single phase version of the CPDG generator to the range, which provides the same reliability and performance as previous models, but specifically for single phase load applications. MOU to develop energy storage and control systems P ower management company Eaton (NYSE: ETN) and leading automotive manufacturer Nissan recently announced the signing of an agreement to explore the feasibility of jointly developing, industrializing and commercializing energy storage and control systems, leveraging the expertise and industrial assets from both companies. The decarbonisation of developed economies, the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources into the grid whilst maintaining grid stability and helping developing nations’ economic and energy growth without a dramatic increase in CO2 emissions are critical issues today. An affordable method to enable widespread access to clean energy in all regions of the world is a vital element in the list of steps needed to mitigate climate change. The combination of power electronics and control software, renewable energy and stationary storage into

a single, packaged system that can be installed in diverse environments is required to enable this. With many years of experience in battery manufacturing and over fifty years of experience in power electronics respectively, Nissan and Eaton are primed to take on the challenge and this landmark partnership, using tried and tested technology, is making that possible today. Robert Lujan, Electric Vehicle Director, Nissan Global: “The batteries as power units far outlast the typical life of a car. Having produced our own electric vehicle batteries at our leading manufacturing sites for many years, this scheme will allow us to expand the

life of our existing 24kWh product therefore reducing the need to use additional resources from the planet to produce new batteries.” Cyrille Brisson, Vice President Marketing, for Eaton’s Electrical business in EMEA added, “These systems will really facilitate the wider adoption and deployment of renewable generation; giving people greater control over their energy supply and consumption. “The multiple benefits of such a unit include continuity of supply, increased grid stability and efficiency, avoidance of peak energy tariffs and reducing the reliance on expensive fuels like diesel to compensate for nogrid or poor-grid situations,” Brisson Enquiry no: 69 said.

mith Power Equipment (SPE), distributors of the well-known range of Kipor generators, says that one of the problems in the industry is that because of the intermittent nature of loadshedding owners are not servicing their generators properly. “This can have a serious effect on the longevity of the product,” says Tom Bloom, General Manager Construction Equipment division of SPE. “Even if you are only using your generator a few times a year, you should execute according to the prescribed maintenance plan in order to get the best return on your investment. We also find that unfortunately a generator is often out of sight and out of mind and when its needed there is often a problem due to lack of maintenance.” he says. Firstly, part of the maintenance plan is to ensure that your generator is in the right location and the following should be taken into account: • Generators produce poisonous gases which need to be expelled outdoors, hence they should be installed outdoors, under a roof, or in a room with good ventilation.

72656_Ingersoll Rand_Centac Ad_KZN.indd 1

2015/11/26 11:09 AM

• A generator needs to have a good airflow to ensure it does not overheat, hence the roof should not be too low and the area should be well ventilated, making sure all gases are extracted. • To be able to get at the generator for maintenance purposes, it needs at least 1 meter on each side for easy access. • The generator should be positioned close to the distribution board to cut installation costs, with relation to cable costs. Secondly, remember always that servicing and maintenance is not time consuming and expensive. They save you time and money significantly in the long run. Remember the following: • A generator like a motor vehicle needs to be serviced regularly to prolong its life. The first service should take place after 50 hours and at least once annually or every 250 hours. Please read the operators manual for service intervals or ask your local Kipor dealer for advice. • Only a qualified technician should perform services to ensure the integrity and lifespan of your investment. • Before you purchase a generator, find out whether it comes with an effective warranty that will be honoured should you have a problem • Also make sure that spares for your generator are readily available, and that the company has qualified technicians available to fit the respective parts. All Kipor dealers countrywide are fully equipped to service your generators. Enquiry no: 71

Agreement to market steel mill liners in Africa

ultotec Rubber has concluded an agreement with CITIC Heavy Industries to market its steel liners in Africa. This is a significant move by CITIC as Multotec Rubber has an extensive representative footprint on the continent and this, together with its value add services, will see the footprint of CITIC steel liners grow exponentially throughout Africa. Michael Rauscher, general manager – Africa & Europe for CITIC Heavy Industries, says that there are numerous synergies between Multotec Rubber and CITIC. “Both companies have strong established reputations for product quality and performance, and both have a depth of technical expertise and applications experience. “It was considered essential that the CITIC steel liner product be distributed by a company that could offer the requisite skills levels and in-field experience to be able to assess individ-

ual customer applications, install and monitor the performance of the liners,” Rauscher says. CITIC Heavy Industries, the largest company of its kind in China, was established in 1958 and can produce over 200 000 tons on quality equipment for the mining, metallurgical and cement industries annually. It is also a major supplier of steel mill liners and grinding media globally. Rauscher says

there are currently over 45 CITIC comminution installations in the region and hundreds globally. The CITIC steel mill liner distributorship will allow Multotec to participate across the full spectrum of mills, especially with the growing trend towards mills with larger diameters. “New projects coming online include very large diameter mills that are outside of the scope of rubber and rubber composite liners due to the energy generated by the grinding ball trajectory from close to the top of the mill. In these applications only steel mill liners are feasible,” Sam Hearn, sales manager at Multotec Rubber, says. It is anticipated that the partnership between Multotec and CITIC Heavy Industries will grow from strength to strength in Africa, and that mines will benefit with access to a very cost effective quality steel mill liner solution. First again –this time with extended product guarantees

ong gone are the days of being considered a run-of-the-mill OEM. This is the strong message being given to all industries by Zest WEG Group Africa. With WEG Brazil as its parent company, this group has its roots firmly in Africa and its commitment to the continent is without question, especially following the large investments made in 2015 in local manufacturing facilities that will be able to service countries across Africa. Such is the confidence and level of commitment of Zest WEG Group Africa to its customer base that Louis Meiring, group CEO, announced guarantees have been extended across all WEG products. “Zest WEG Group Africa is known for leading industry in its thinking and the decision to extend the product guarantees is, we believe, another very important first,” Meiring says. “While the extended guarantee will cover customers for unexpected electrical and/or mechanical failures giving them absolute peace of mind, it is not going to cost them more.” Meiring says that this was a prime consideration for Zest WEG Group Africa as the

organisation is well aware of the additional financial pressures that many of its customers are operating under in the current financial climate. “By extending our product guarantees we are increasing the peace of mind that customers have with WEG products and opening the door for potential customers to examine what

we know is an unbelievable value proposition.” It is quite significant that Zest WEG Group Africa was the first equipment supplier to move from IE2 motors to IEC3 compliant motors, and a key aspect was that that change was introduced at no additional cost to its customers, thereby reducing the total cost of ownership. “Extending product guarantees is aligned with our strategy of forming long term partnerships with customers. Continuous product improvement is ongoing at WEG and indeed at Zest WEG Group Africa’s local manufacturing facilities and the benefit of this must, of necessity, be passed on to our customers allowing them to optimise their operations,” Meiring says. “We have reviewed the performance of all WEG products over an extended period and are confident that all will meet the guarantee with ease,” Gary Daines, managing director of Zest WEG Electric, says. Extended guarantees will vary from product to product, but all customers are still assured of the same high level of in-field support for which Zest WEG Group Africa is known. Enquiry no: 77

n estimated twelve kilos of screws are used to build a medium-sized vehicle. The safety risk “danger to life and limb” applies to 15% of these. Precision and stability are vitally important as any resulting accident could cost human lives. In order to ensure the quality of screw connections the tools responsible must undergo regular tests and calibration procedures. Usually these services, in the form of calibrations, must be carried out by the manufacturers of the screwdriving equipment in their own laboratories. Now Deprag Schulz also offers a diverse range of service options relating to calibration. Since January 2015 they have been offering on-site calibration with their mobile service unit . “Since the introduction of this option, around 30% of all calibrations have been provided on-site at the customer’s facilities”, says Tobias Dirrigl, Application Technician EC Screwdriving Technology at Deprag, “and the trend is increasing.” The mobile calibration unit can carry out calibrations directly on-site at the customer’s facilities and the calibration wagon can navigate individual production lines without disturbing production procedures. The process for mobile calibration is very similar to factory calibration in an accredited calibration laboratory. The device is calibrated according to DIN EN ISO 9001. The only difference: The calibration takes place during Enquiry no: 79 running production.

Maintaining steady growth

B

anding & Identification (ID) Solutions Africa has continued to show stable growth in the demand for its products despite downturns in the economy, thanks to the quality of its products and the ability to match the best products to its customers’ needs. This success is clearly evident in the fact that the company recently relocated to larger and improved premises. Banding & ID Solutions Africa also hosted an open day late last year, where more than 30 customers and members of the trade media were given a tour of the new facilities, and interactive demonstrations on a wide range of Band-It fastening, clamping and buckling products. “Even though the company faces challenges with regards to industry slowdown and the rand’s poor exchange rate performance, the team’s commitment to the customer reflects in its impressive sales.” Sayd Band-It European sales manager Paul Clark. Additional challenges in 2015 have been delays in steel production from steel mills, power outages, and ‘fly-by-night’ companies selling cheap and inferior products, states Banding & ID Solutions Africa director Terry O’Kelly. “What differentiates us is that we are able to send someone out to look at the application and specify a product that is right for it. Sealing the deal

ention the word ‘water’ anywhere in South Africa and you will be met with sighs of despair and desperation. Currently climatic conditions have pushed the country into a drought situation with numerous municipalities imposing water restrictions. KwaZulu-Natal however has been on restricted water use for a number of years. Seizing the opportunity, Easy Coat, a fluid sealing and wear resistance company and the AESSeal agent for Richards Bay, presented Mondi with a water saving strategy and has since then yielded a remarkable reduction in water conservation. The mill has replaced 167 quenchto-drain flushing and lubricating systems fitted to mechanical seals and incorporated a continuous loop water management design avoiding the average monthly water loss of 63,210 kilolitres – which equates to around 25 Olympic-size swimming pools. At the hefty price of R2,50 per kilolitre (excluding effluent treatment costs), the project is on track to deliver a return on investment in under a year. Mondi placed its order for replacement systems in February with Easy Coat. The order provided for 167

AESseal type-SWO2 and SWO3 water management systems that use recycled water to cool, lubricate and flush mechanical seals in the plant. These replaced the existing oncethrough flushing designs that needed a constant supply of fresh water. At the time of the order Easy Coat had successfully installed and trialled 152 pump and mixture locations over the last twelve years. The Easy Coat’s proposal was backed by Mondi’s environmental department for a number of reasons including the use of a proven mechanical seal, a mean time between failure (MTBF) of over six years, and potential water savings of just under four million kilolitres.

Further, the installation some ten years ago of mechanical seals and water management systems at Mondi’s Merebank mill had resulted in multi-million rand water savings and substantially reduced downtime on rotating equipment Using an integral vessel to store flushing water for continuous recycling, the SWO2 system is connected directly to the plant water line which becomes the system’s fluid and pressure source. The pressure can be adjusted so that the barrier fluid pressure within the system is maintained at one bar above stuffing box pressure, resulting in a pressure differential that keeps contaminants away from mechanical seal faces

and increases seal and pump reliability. The barrier fluid is circulated to and from the mechanical seal by the thermosyphon effect which uses natural convection to effect a passive heat exchange and circulate a fluid without the need for a mechanical pump. The result is a minimisation in water wastage and more efficient cooling than the once-through, quench-to-drain design. The SWO3 system is supplied with finned tubing as a standard so that it can be used on high heat applications. Mondi has installed a combination of SWO2 and SWO3 systems according to process product temperature. Besides lowering water-related costs, the SWO2/SWO3 system is superior to the once-through format in three ways: 1. There is an indicator that shows when any inboard seal failure occurs; 2. the system is kept pressurised by a non-return valve which helps to prevent cross contamination of sealing water in the event of a failure, and; 3. the system is fitted with a regulating valve which maintains water pressure and flow rate without

M

pact’s Felixton Mill R765 million expansion was unveiled at the end of January. The upgrade of the paper mill will enhance its product offering, enabling it to produce advanced lightweight containerboard to cater for the increasing demand for packaging weight reduction. Commenting on the project, Mpact CEO Mr Bruce Strong said; “Capital investment across the Group is critical for us to take advantage of growth prospects in our markets. In the case of the Felixton Mill, the upgrade will increase capacity by 60,000 tonnes to 215,000 tonnes.

Notably, the significant investment in the latest paper machine technology and machinery will improve the quality of our paper products; enhance operational efficiencies and the mill’s overall competitiveness in line with global trends. On completion of the project, the mill will no longer utilise bagasse fibre in its products, moving towards fully recycled fibre usage. Environmental benefits of the upgrade also include significant specific reductions in CO2, and the usage of energy, water, and solid waste.” The Felixton Mill’s upgrade is also expected to contribute to job creation

through increased collections of waste paper which will be required by the mill. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, MEC. Mabuyakhulu said the Felixton Mill upgrade augured well for the province’s plans of using infrastructure projects as a tool for skills transfer and job creation. “It is our view that whatever occurs in the province of KwaZulu-Natal needs to be connected to our broader strategy of undermining inequality, poverty and unemployment and we believe that this R765 million upgrade to Felixton Mill’s operations will create some much needed job opportunities in the province as well as contribute to a skills transfer to local communities.” As part of the Felixton Mill upgrade, Mpact secured an 8-year structured loan facility of R200 million with the KZN Growth Fund. Situated near Empangeni, Felixton Mill was established in 1953. The mill produces containerboard for local and export corrugated markets utilising waste paper and bagasse, a fibre residue of sugar cane, as primary raw materials. In June 2015, Felixton Mill successfully commissioned Phase 1 of the upgrade, with the completion of a new state-ofthe-art recycled fibre (RCF) plant and an upgrade to the paper machine. The second and final phase of the upgrade is on schedule to be commissioned in 2017.

further settings or adjustments after installation. Sakkie de Villiers, managing director of Easy Coat, emphasised that the AESSeal mechanical seals at Mondi Richards Bay have always been fitted with the SWO2/SWO3 system. “The 167 new systems are being fitted to non-AESSeal mechanical seals, where we are replacing the quench-to-drain, double flow meter systems,” de Villiers explained. The installation of the first 64 systems took place during a planned two-week shutdown in March with 97 systems installed July. The remaining six systems are still to be installed. Environmental performance, particularly with regard to the saving and correct utilisation of water resources, has always been a strong driving force behind AESSeal’s success in South Africa. The company has a mandate to continuously drive down sealing costs and increase the MTBF, in line with Mondi’s identification of the need to carefully and aggressively manage water resources as a component of the group’s environmental policy. ■ Story courtesy of TAPPSA Journal Enquiry no: 81

Efficient cargo handling N

Konecranes in Ngodwana was recently awarded the SAPPI Safety Award for 2015. From left, Mitch Jala, Site Manager of Konecranes Ngodwana, receives the 2015 SAPPI Safety Achievement Gold Certificate from Enquiry no: 83 Christo Willemse, Mill Manager Pulp & Utilities.

ew to BLT SA’s range of materials handling equipment are Capacity Sabre 9 terminal tractors which are coupled with trailers to safely move heavy weight trailered cargo throughout container terminals, across docks and over airport runways. These modular terminal tractors, which can be customised for every specific handling task they need to perform, are ideally suited for demanding operations in distribution and logistics centres, warehouses, container and intermodal facilities, as well as for light industrial handling. “Critical challenges facing the logistics sector include efficient cargo handling solutions that reduce operating costs, improve productivity and enhance safety of operations,” says Charity Gumede, marketing director, BLT SA. “Capacity terminal tractors ensure faster handling times, reduce on-site congestion and minimise demurrage costs for trucks waiting to be loaded and unloaded." By positioning trailers at discharge ramps, the road truck is able to transport further loads, instead of having to wait for a trailer or container to be discharged. “In port operations, terminal tractors move trailers to and from vessels and storage areas to speed up operations, thus increasing operational efficiency." Capacity Sabre 9 terminal tractors have a robust frame construction and precise manufacturing toleranc-

es, ideally suited to handle rigorous operations. This series has been designed with a 30% faster actuation of the boom than previous models. The advantage of this is reduced coupling times which enables quicker drive-aways. A lower, tapered skid ramp minimises trip outs of the cab and for increased operator safety, there is a lower step height and new sight line designs for improved visibility. Other features include torque ratings of 990 Nm @ 1 500 r/min and reduced emissions for enhanced environmental protection. The latest technology in fuel savings significantly decreases operational and maintenance costs. Components are easily accessible for efficient ground level serviceability.

Built-in onboard diagnostics enable operators to easily monitor the machine’s service status. Numerous service checks can be performed at ground level, which ensures more uptime for each machine. Capacity tractors enhance BLT SA’s extensive range of equipment that includes Taylor container handlers and reach stackers, Meclift variable reach trucks and Mobicon mobile container handling systems. The company is also the exclusive distributor in Africa for the Samson range of bulk handling equipment, which encompasses material and boom feeders for loading and high capacity stockpiling, link conveyors and grab hoppers, as well as mobile shiploaders. Lowering dew point to protect equipment

A

ccording to Brian Abbott, Product Manager at SMC Pneumatics South Africa, water vapour and the resulting water condensate are the foremost causes of costly downtime and increased maintenance. “The blame is often laid on oil or contaminants, both of which are easily removed with proper filtration.” “Moisture in facility airlines can cause corrosion and rust which can break loose to the air passageways causing blockages in narrow restrictions and filter elements.

This can lead to increased pressure drops and loss in machine performance,” adds Brian. Aftercoolers, drip legs and water separators are used to remove water condensate from factory compressed air. However, this air is still at 100% relative humidity and is still at risk of condensing into water should the surrounding temperatures drop to its dew point. To protect expensive automation equipment, factory compressed air must remove as much water

vapour as possible to avoid any condensation further downstream. This is done by lowering its dew point. Drying compressed air at the highest pressure consistent with the facility’s demands will result in the most economical dryer operation. For most industrial applications, the rule is to first set the pressure dew point to meet general requirements, then adjust it between -6°C to -10°C lower than the facility’s lowest ambient temperature. Refrigerated dryers are the most common measure to lower dew point. A refrigerated dryer will further cool the compressed air by removing heat at its inlet side and lowering its temperature dew point down to 3 °C, then expelling the condensate through an automatic condensate drain. The dryer will then reheat the dried compressed air back to ambient temperature by recycling the previously removed heat using a heat exchange process. Membrane dryers use hollow fibers composed of a macro molecular membrane through which water vapour passes easily, but is difficult for air (oxygen and nitrogen) to pass through. When humid, compressed air is supplied to the inside of the hollow fibers, only the water vapour permeates the membrane and is drawn to the outside due to the pressure differential between the moisture inside and outside the hollow fibers. The compressed air becomes dry and continues to flow unimpeded out of the membrane dryer. By altering the air flow rate and membrane configurations, pressure dew points from 15 °C to -60°C can be achieved. Membrane air dryers are a cost effective solution for point-of-use applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing, packaging, laboratory environments and other applications. Desiccant dryers, on the other hand, pass air through beds of desiccant, an absorbent material such as silica gel or activated alumina, which adsorb water vapour to its surface to effectively lower dew points to temperatures well below that which a refrigerated dryer can achieve. Achieving maximum payloads

T

he legal weight limits for trucks and trailers are well established and the traffic police have a zero tolerance attitude towards overloading. As a transporter being paid by the load, you may then choose to underload to be safe and if you are being paid by the ton, achieving maximum payload on every trip becomes all important. Added to this is the fact that the revenue generated by the first 80-90% of your load will only cover your operating costs. The last 10-20% of the load is your net profit. The challenge becomes how to achieve a maximum load on a truck when you are infield (or away from weighbridge facilities) and most often the only solution is to fit an OnBoard Weighing system. According to John Harrison, the Managing Director of Loadtec, there are 2 distinctive areas of performance to take into consideration. Firstly, the weighing system must be functional and of the highest accuracy available and secondly; the driver needs to have specific target values and

needs to be disciplined (or incentivized) to make sure that the targets are reached on every trip. Either one of the above alone will not ensure a maximum payload. The OnBoard weighing system is only a tool for the drivers to use in trying to reach their payload targets. In reality this means managing the performance of the driver on

every load to make sure that maximum payload has been achieved and having some form of penalty (or disincentive) if the prescribed process was not followed and the required targets not achieved. Smaller fleets are easily managed by routinely discussing the performance with your drivers. Managing larger fleets on the same basis becomes a full time job. Loadtech has identified a need to automate this management process and provide regular reports on both the OnBoard Weighing and drivers performance on a trip by trip basis. Targets and tolerances are set for each application and reports can be created for any event outside of the tolerances. This allows the manager to manage the process by exception whilst reviewing the overall performance at his leisure. Loadtech has some exciting new products that are designed to assist in achieving these goals. Enquiry no: 86

he operations division is at the heart of SEW-Eurodrive, and the division’s newlyappointed General Manager Greg Perry (pictured) is eager to consolidate on current successes to improve service delivery. The scope of the company’s operations division encompasses numerous functions, including; production, logistics, services and engineering. Despite the fact that the company is well-recognised as a market leader in innovation and quality, Perry admits that more needs to be

done to maintain current clients and win over new ones in tough economic conditions. “Our products are good, and we have every confidence in them, in terms of design and functionality. Due to a gradual slowdown in new investments, a general industry trend is that operations are reducing overhead costs by diverting budgets towards maintenance to extend the total life cycle of equipment. As a result, customer service is more important than ever, and we are

adopting a continuous improvement approach in that regard,” he states. Bearing this in mind, Perry believes that SEW-Eurodrive will maintain its competitive edge in industries such as mining, automotive, food and beverage, and water treatment. “Our business model is sound and we have a strong team of people behind our products, however, it is important to work ‘smarter’ in challenging times, and we are doing this by taking a proactive approach towards streamlining efficiencies across the board.” Enquiry no: 87

Conforming made easy T he department of Labour has recently tightened the controls around accidents on-site and many a contractor, both big and small has struggled with setting up systems to formalise their company safety structure and create a tight safety record that is site specific and easily accessible. Failure to produce these records often results in a sub-contractor being denied access to a site as their paperwork and compliance is not up to standard. The reason for these new controls is to reduce injuries on construction sites. Most contractors are struggling with this, and are faced with high costs of employing a consultant to create these files for them. The need for these safety files to be site specific, means constant updating for every site attended to by the contractor. With this in mind, a Durban based company, Contracting Software has created a safety file software program - Q-Safe - which makes the whole process easy to manage; update and print out records.

I

Initially, a contractor will need to spend some time inputting company information, but once done, it requires only minor adjustments for each site for it to be possible to result in an up to date safety record for that project. The safety files that can be compiled with the use of Q-Safe are structured to define company policy, the identification of risks, the appointment of responsible people to key roles, compliance and registers. In addition, the company offers a facility called “Toolbox Talks”, which

comprises a collection of 5min talks aimed at a weekly educational meeting, where a topic is discussed and staff input is encouraged. Education is the key to reducing accidents in the workplace. Q-Safe is downloaded via internet and is offered at an affordable price. The company is also available to set up the programme for a client, to ensure that all the necessary information required for their operations is inputted into the programme. Due to demand from Health and Safety Practitioners, who create safety files for other companies, the company has just release the PRO version, which allows a user to create files for multiple contractors, working in multiple locations, with the facility to have the files created by multiple persons. This is an enormous time saver for them, especially as the updated files can be sent in Pdf format by email, for easy printing and upgrading of a file. Enquiry no: 93

erco have seen a significant increase in demand for their custom built special events trailers. Recent projects include an events vehicle for Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI) complete with a

6m-long stage and high-tech sound and lighting equipment for use at functions and happenings in cities or out of town. The trailer, which will sport Coca-Cola branding, was constructed at Serco’s Durban factory and delivered to the client in October. Serco’s managing director, Clinton Holcroft, said ABI needed a state of the art vehicle which it could use at its promotional events and which, if necessary, could be self-sufficient for power supply. The technical team created a cus-

tomised and functional vehicle sporting a variety of sound and lighting equipment. A feature of the 12,5-long trailer is that is has a side wall that opens with hydraulics at a push of a button to reveal a stage with an awning cover, a massive 180’’ screen, multi-media equipment -including quality speakers attached to collapsible trellises - and a variety of lighting. The front includes a compartment which houses a silent generator and storage for the multi-media equipment, while the rear has a chiller section which can accommodate around two tons of refrigerated drinks. Creating employment opportunities

F

ollowing steady and sustained growth in 2015, leading rope access specialist Skyriders has expanded its workforce by an impressive 10 percent during the course of the year, with targets of creating an additional 15 employment opportunities in 2016. This would mean bucking the national trend of shedding jobs, by actually increasing staff numbers from 243 to 271. Skyriders marketing manager Mike Zinn attributes this ongoing success to the fact that rope access is safer, quicker and more cost-effective than most traditional means of

access. “Our experienced and highlytrained rope access technicians continue to offer high quality safe services using alternative access systems that assist client budgets in going a little further in challenging times,” he explains. Skyriders offers a variety of rope access aided services to numerous industries, such as power generation, mining, heavy industry and facilities management. These services include ultra-high pressure washing, concrete inspection, repairs, application of coating systems, work at height safety systems, welding, and confined space rescue and standby. Zinn indicates that Skyriders has expanded its scope of work in the petrochemical industry, and noted some advancements in the power generation sector too. Enquiry no: 96

Review liability insurance

any business owners make M the mistake of assuming that their liability insurance policy

renewal automatically happens once a year. Unfortunately, missing a policy renewal date generally leads to a gap in insurance coverage and when it comes to a liability policy, a gap in coverage can result in significant financial losses as a result of legal costs and law suits. This is according to Simon Colman Underwriting Executive at SHA Specialist Underwriters, who says that it is essential for all businesses to review and update their liability policies on an annual basis. “Liability policies are often referred to as ‘long tail’ insurance as the liability claim often comes through many months or in some instances years after the actual event happened, which can raise serious issues for the business owner if their policy has not been renewed.” “This means that the liability claim could very well only be reported to the insurance provider many months after the incident occurred. As a result, it is strongly advised that business

owners speak to their brokers about their liability policies and make sure they diarise the expiry dates of these policies in order to avoid any gaps in the cover. If the policy is written on what is called a “Claims Made basis”, which most are these days, then it does not matter if the policy was active at the time of the incident if the policy is not active when the claim is first reported.” It is also important that the business description gets reviewed to make sure that the insurer is aware of all the activities that the business undertakes. “With the economy currently under strain, various business owners may consider diversifying their offerings in an effort to generate further revenue. These new activities will come with new risks and it is vital that the new activities are disclosed to the insurer. Failure to do so will undoubtedly result in a claim rejection in the event of a incident related to the new services arises.” He recommends that businesses employ the services of a reputable insurance broker. Ensuring supply chain skills development

015 was an incredible year for the APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional Certification in South Africa. SAPICS’ pursuit to create a skilled work force in South Africa was enhanced by the adoption of this valuable and globally recognized supply chain certification. Since its introduction in 2006 The CSCP has evolved into a truly global certification for supply chain professionals. Three South Africans recently scored impressively high scores in the exam and are proud to become Certified Supply Chain Professionals. Salome Posthumus, Frances Hedding and Orestes Peristeris have all achieved their CSCP certifications with a score of 333. “According to our records this is the highest score anyone has achieved for CSCP in South Africa. Prior to this score we have had one

candidate achieve 331 in 2010 and two candidates achieving 331 in 2014,” said Jenny Froome (pictured), general manager of SAPICS, the exclusive Sub Saharan Africa Channel Partner of US-based APICS, the leading provider of supply chain management education and certification programs. APICS uses a scaled score; the range for CSCP scaled score is 200– 350 with the minimum passing score being 300. The CSCP course provides a holistic view of the entire supply chain, and the certification is internationally recognised as one of the most respected certifications coveted by the close-knit global community of supply chain professionals. The mantra of ‘putting the customer first’ is a popular management expression; the CSCP certification however shows in detail how a true focus on

the customer is critical to growing a business and its market share. CSCP certified professionals have an increased awareness of how the complexities of the supply chain are interconnected. They understand that supply chain management in the true sense is more than procurement, more than logistics, more than operations management. It is all of these and more. This awareness creates the ability to advise business leaders with confidence on ways to increase revenue, decrease costs and waste, and keep customers happy. “The Certified Supply Chain Professional has a good overview of the subject matter in the overall certification material,” Froome agrees. “South African companies benefiting from the skills of their CSCPs include Sasol, Resolve, Pick n Pay, GSK Healthcare, Polyoak Packaging, Distell, Value Logistics and Industrial Logistic Systems, to name but a few.” Enquiry no: 98

Cutting cold storage power costs

outh Africa’s increasing electricity costs are forcing companies with cold storage facilities to re-examine the efficiency of their environmental control. One company well positioned to help customers meet their energy saving targets is DDL Equipment, whose Frigo rigid motorised traffic doors, manufactured by European company Nergeco, allow high traffic while delivering one of the most efficient insulation barriers available. The commonly encountered flexible door curtain rolled up around a drum fitted above the lintel is not ideal because of the ice layer

which seizes the door when hot air meets cold during door activation, preventing the curtain from unrolling smoothly upon closure. Nergeco’s alternative (and safe) solution to this problem is to incorporate horizontal stiffening tubes into the flexible curtain of the Frigo door, to press the sides of the curtain firmly into vertical guides on both sides of the door frame. This results in an airtight curtain with an even resistance to air pressure, and no need for any heavy bottom beam for smooth closure. There is also no

need for the potentially dangerous heavy steel bar often found attached to the bottom of roll-up door curtains,

to overcome the friction of the ice layer. Frigo doors are divided into three broad categories. Frigo I is designed to separate two belowfreezing cold storage areas with only a small temperature differential. The speed of operation of the roll-up curtain is 1,2m/s, allowing for short opening and closing times while the tight seal within the frame maintains the airtight barrier between the two areas without any danger to pedestrians.

Undercarriage R&D on dozers and drills

B

ased on customer input, Caterpillar is working on a multigenerational product development plan, dedicated to creating optimum site solutions. With significant testing and design improvements, this will bring products to market faster. In turn, Caterpillar continues to enhance existing undercarriage systems across its model range. A prime example is its sleeve bearing track system, which has more than ten years of proven performance in the field. This patented design has demonstrated its ability to eliminate galling between pins and bushings, thereby increasing track life. Extended intervals for bushing turns also reduce maintenance interventions. Standard on all Cat D11N, D11R,

and D11T track-type tractors, this undercarriage system is designed to operate at higher speeds and greater loads. A more heavy duty track option is available for D11 size machines, which is ideal for abrasive conditions.

This 100 percent proprietary system features a taller, tough steel link combined with patented bushing and sleeve bearings. This system provides for a 2 to 1 wear ratio between the links and bushings; alternatively, a 1 to 1 wear ratio for a ‘run to destruction’ methodology without a bushing turn. (The need for a turn is dependent on application and conditions.) Caterpillar’s new rotary drilling range is another example of how recent research and development (R&D) improvements are passing on cost per tonne savings. “A heavier track chain design increases durability for handling high field loads,” explains Barloworld Equipment group product specialist, Deon Delport. “Plus the standard fit-

ment of grease lubricated track reduces pitch extension wear for 20-40% increased chain life.” (Barloworld Equipment is the Cat dealer for southern Africa.) Larger diameter idlers and a larger track roller tread reduce contact stress with the track links; and double flange rollers improve primary track guiding. In

Frigo II separates a refrigerated (above freezing) storage area from a storage area at room temperature. Additional insulation is added by welding air cushions between the curtain’s flexible fabric double skin. Frigo III separates a belowfreezing storage area from either a refrigerated storage area or a warm storage area. The Frigo III curtain has the highest level of insulation in the range. The complete Frigo range is sold and supported in South Africa by DDL Equipment, alongside Agro, Star and Enduro doors.

turn, stronger, welded roller guard assembly improves secondary track guiding. Backing Caterpillar’s proprietary engineering designs are a series of Undercarriage Assurance Programmes, which provide comprehensive support beyond standard new machine or parts warranties. They cover all major moving undercarriage components on Cat track-type tractors, track-type loaders, and track-type hydraulic excavators.

Warehouse racking stability and longevity

A

PC Storage Solutions SA, the South African specialist in warehouse storage solutions and warehouse automation, has introduced the Mecalux integrated safety pin, or locking mechanism for connector systems on racking beams. The recently developed mechanism is attached permanently to racking beams and cannot be removed accidently or by malicious intent, ensuring enhanced lasting stability and safety in all APC Storage Solutions SA racking installations. The safety locking mechanism forms part of the rack end plate. As a permanent fixture it cannot be lost like its predecessor could, cannot be accidently knocked out, and once the installation is assembled it cannot be extracted without completely dismantling the beam. Some advantages of these improved locking mechanisms include a marginal time-saving with regards to installation and significant time saving when inspections are carried out; permanently increases racking stability; and overall warehouse safety

is enhanced. “Its operation is simplistic, yet effective,” explains Ettienne Meyburgh, General Manager KZN Region and Automation, APC Storage Solutions SA. “The new safety pin is welded on to the beam where the previous safety clip was attached, so that on installation the beam slides easily in to place. The safety pin has a spring within its barrel which slides against the upright and is pushed back. Once the beam is in place the pin shoots back into place, safely

securing the now connected beam. Removing the beam is just as easy as the safety pin is released by pulling back on it enabling easy beam dismantling while the safety pin remains in place.” The Mecalux integrated safety pin was introduced to the South African market in August 2015 via APC Storage Solutions SA, and each of the company’s new installations since have the refined locking mechanism as a standard feature. “This is at no extra cost to our customers,” Meyburgh emphasises. He adds that the older pins are still in use in the company’s existing installations, so customers retain the same system throughout the warehouse. “However,” he adds, “as soon as any of those existing facilities require upgrades or expansions, the new integrated safety pins will be used across the structures.” APC Storage Solutions SA is the sole supplier of Mecalux storage solutions and accessories to southern Africa. Safer, “greener” transport industry S tate-of-the-art transport industry technology - like in-cab cameras, lane assist and proximity control does not come cheap, but the cost of this high-tech equipment is undoubtedly outweighed by its safety benefits, according to Lucky Maluleke, HSS Executive of Imperial Logistics. When it comes to road safety, supply chain and logistics leader Imperial is putting its money where its mouth is, with the group having instituted a policy to install in-cab camera system “DriveCam” in every truck in its fleet. It is an initiative that began in 2013, when Tanker Services snapped up the new technology shortly after its launch, and began a project to install and test in-cab cameras in its vehicles. Imported from the USA, DriveCam is based on a dual-lens in-cab video camera and reporting software. Through its two wide angle lenses, the camera records what is happening on the road ahead of the truck as well as in the cab. Its built-in gravity sensor ensures that footage is stored whenever the vehicle is subjected to

forward or sideways movement beyond predefined parameters. “The sole purpose of the camera is to mitigate risks for the client, driver, other road users and pedestrians,” Maluleke states. “It is used to determine whether the driver is steering off the road, falling asleep or driving irresponsibly. Basically, this system picks up any sudden movements of the vehicle, the alertness of the driver and whether he is complying with the rules of the road. Furthermore, the driver is very aware that he

is being recorded and that it is easy to identify a guilty party. If a driver does slip up, we are immediately alerted to the fact through the real time feed to our 24-hour control room. We are able to assess the situation and the driver, and take the necessary action." ”In the event of an accident, we will have footage prior to the accident and for a specified time afterwards. Imperial and our clients rely on this for investigation purposes.” Maluleke notes that DriveCam has proved its worth in many instances, and cites several accidents in which the technology revealed that driver error was not the cause of the collision. “After analysing the videos, it was discovered that in 90% of the cases reviewed, it was not the driver’s fault. Confusion and contradictory eye witness reports could be eliminated, and the problem solving was much simpler.” Far from resting on its laurels with the successful group-wide implementation of in-cab cameras, Imperial is continuing to investigate new technology that will further enhance Enquiry no: 104 safety.

Easy to use plasma technologies E asy to use and set up, and low running costs are the hallmarks of Afrox’s extensive range of automated plasma cutting equipment. “We strive to implement turnkey profiling solutions that match the longer-term cutting needs of fabricators,” says Afrox Applications Development Manager, Heating & Cutting, Hennie Van Rhyn. “Specifically for cutting stainless steels and aluminium, we offer customers a range of packaged plasma solutions built around combining cutting tables from leading European manufacturer Pierce with Thermal Dynamics’ plasma cutting technology. “We couple Pierce’s flexible range of precision CNC profile cutting tables with Thermal Dynamics’ water mist plasma technology, which offers an excellent combination of features for metallic materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, copper and titanium,” says Van Rhyn. With benefits that include easy set-up and use, superior cut quality up to 120 Amps, the Cutmaster A series offers solutions for light, medium and heavy applications. Van Rhyn elaborates: “Thermal Dynamics’ Auto-Cut XT series is a high duty cycle standard air plasma system ideally suited to heavy plate cutting applications. They deliver a premium performance on both mild steel and non-ferrous metals and incorporate

proprietary Maximum Life parts that lower operating costs, and feature water mist secondary (WMS) technology for low cost, high quality cutting on non-ferrous metals, using N2 as plasma gas and ordinary tap water as the secondary.” The Ultra-Cut XT series is a high precision plasma system with the flexibility to increase cutting power while providing outstanding parts life, the highest kW output for a maximised duty cycle and cut speed, and a lower current draw. “The beauty of the Ulta-Cut XT range is that the cut quality is high enough to allow parts to go directly from the cutting table to welding, painting or assembly, eliminating the need for costly secondary operations,” Van Rhyn comments. The Afrox range of Pierce profile cutting systems caters for all segments of the profile industry, from the Sabre, providing optical tracing customers a reliable machine supplied with oxy fuel or plasma cutting options, to the Scorpion, RUR, RUM or Maxi systems, which can accommodate the larger, more demanding steel services segment of the market. More SA businesses opt for electronic records management

5% of South African businesses indicated that switching from paper-based to electronic document storage and information management services is in their pipeline for the near future. This is according the 2015 Metrofile Records and Information Management Trends Index, which was conducted among over 200 management executives from local businesses operating mainly in the financial services, business services, industrial and information and communication technology sectors, among others. Wayne Clarke, (pictured) Managing Director of Metrofile Records Management – a group company of JSE-listed Metrofile Holdings Limited, says that the development of Optical

Landmark agreement for better service in Africa

Character Recognition (OCR) software is a contributing factor in this national mind shift. “With OCR technology becoming more sophisticated and accessible, scanning a physical, handwritten document and converting it into electronic format is fast becoming common practice.” The Survey also showed that 95% of businesses required their information to be stored electronically, a process that is quite time consuming without the assistance of a reliable records and information management (RIM) partner, says Clarke. He explains that in many industries, such as the banking sector, customers are still required to complete physical forms and staff are then required to capture this handwritten data in electronic

format manually. “By capturing these documents through OCR systems, this process is automated and the documents become easily recoverable through the use of search engines, thereby saving the organisation a significant amount of time.” Clarke explains that an optical character recognised document looks just like the original document and that advanced OCR software allows a business to create, process and repurpose various documents effortlessly. “The combination of a reputable RIM partner with OCR software means

that companies will not have to deal with the misplacement of important documents nor the tedious re-typing of handwritten information.” In addition to the time saving prospects of partnering with a RIM expert, this partner can also assist the organisation in complying with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) which is set to be implemented this year, he says. “Streamlining processes to be compliant with POPI regulations is another time consuming process that distracts employees from their core functions." "By outsourcing electronic RIM functions to a reputable service provider this process can be expedited tremendously,” concludes Clarke. Enquiry no: 105

Mr Zhijian Wang (Managing Director of FAW Import & Export Co. Ltd) left and Mr Manuel Pereira de Canha (CEO of AMH) right at the signing of the agreement for AMH to be the exclusive sales, parts, service and maintenance truck partner of FAW in Zambia and Malawi

A

significant agreement has been reached between FAW and Associated Motor Holdings (AMH), part of the Imperial Group, to offer the best sales experience, top-notch quality service, parts and maintenance provision to all FAW truck customers in Malawi and Zambia. At the legal confirmation ceremony recently Manuel Pereira de Canha (CEO of AMH) affirmed AMH’s belief in the positive attributes of the FAW brand of trucks. “This Chinese brand has remarkably changed old misconceptions. With its leading global manufacturing plant, FAW Vehicle Manufacturers SA (Pty) Ltd, like its parent company, can equal the same build and quality standards of just about any other brand. The distinction between different truck categories and the purchase decision lies with the customers and their specific operations, contracts, business models and company projections. Some customers and fleet operators will choose more affordable, but simpler vehicles while others prefer high-end premium technology and sophistication. It’s a conscious choice for a specific business solution. It is no longer a question of the level of manufacturing infrastructure or labour, it is a question of what suits the customer best,” said Manuel Pereira de Canha. “FAW trucks have proven in a few short years their durability, strength and rugged capacity to deal with some of the most rigorous operating conditions prevalent, especially in developing global regions, such as Africa.” AMH will be the exclusive sales, parts, service and maintenance truck partner of FAW in Zambia and in Malawi. “In 2015 FAW Vehicle Manufacturers built and sold over 1 000 trucks into the southern African region. With the formidable experience of a partner such as AMH in Malawi and Zambia, plus our own expansion further into Africa, we have set our sights on 5 000 trucks per annum to be sold in the near future,” said Zhijian Wang confidently. The greatest advantage for South Africa underpinning this agreement is that all the FAW trucks sold into sub-Saharan Africa are being manufactured locally at the Coega plant Enquiry no: 106 based near Port Elizabeth.

Stops cold air in its tracks

Machines supplied to brickmaker

M

anitou recently supplied 17 machines to long-standing client West End Clay Bricks in Westonaria. The range, including rough terrain forklifts and rough terrain telehandlers, is fully supported with a dedicated Manitou technician who will remain on site for the duration of the 5-year rental contract to ensure maximum uptime for West End Clay Bricks. West End Clay Bricks, which produces an enormous 350 000 bricks each day, has relied on Manitou machinery for the past 14 years for lifting and transporting raw and saleable materials in its manual operation. These applications include moving bricks from extrusion lines right through to loading palletised loads onto trucks. “We had to pair the lifting requirements of West End Clay Bricks (which vary from one to six tons) with machines that would also be suitable to safely handle loads at an extended reach of up to five metres,” says Eric de Wet, Area Sales Manager, Manitou

Southern Africa. “Not only can our machines handle both the various lift and reach requirements, they are also equipped with hydraulic load balancing systems and load sensing charts to ensure maximum levels of safety.” In addition, three of the machines are equipped with double-pallet forks to increase the load capacity of each trip. “These machines work flat-out throughout both day and night shifts in very dusty and muddy conditions to achieve our high output targets,” says Francois Aveling, Operations Director,

West End Clay Bricks. To address these rough terrain conditions, Manitou has equipped the entire fleet with double filters and double fuel filtration systems. West End Clay Bricks benefit from having a Manitou technician, Kobus Esterhuizen, dedicated solely to its site. “As we are a manual operations plant, everything gets handled by forklifts, telehandlers or loaders. Without them, our production comes to a standstill,” concludes Aveling. “The quality of Manitou machines and the exceptional service and support we receive are the reasons why we have relied on them for over 14 years.” West End Clay Bricks employs 250 people at their site in Westonaria. The new Manitou fleet includes: three MHT-X 780 and four MT-X 625 rough terrain telehandlers, five MX 50-2 and six MX 30-2 rough terrain forklifts as well as four MI-35 conventional forklifts in their existing fleet. pex General Purpose Strip Curtains are an inexpensive way to cover a door opening and prevent the ingress of hot or cold air, dust and other pollutants while still allowing easy passage for both personnel and vehicular traffic. This product is ideal for installation in small, medium and large openings. Manufactured from specially formulated PVC material that does not become brittle with use, Apex General Purpose Strip Curtains are transparent for optimum visibility and safety. This is an important factor when both people and vehicular traffic use the same entrances and exits. This locally manufactured strip curtaining product is best known for its patented Balledge design which, while providing an effective thermal seal, parts eas-

ily under pressure to allow people and goods to move through unhindered. Wim Dessing, managing director of Apex Strip Curtains & Doors, says that the Balledge design ensures that the individual strips do not snag or scratch goods or people moving through the opening. This feature also strengthens the strips ensuring a longer life even in the harshest applications. Apex Strip Curtains are generally used to prevent the ingress of hot or cold air, depending on the season, and this is considered important as comfortable employees are more productive. This, Dessing says, is especially true when hot air is trapped in a warehouse or manufacturing facility causing excessive heat build-up. Apex Strip Curtains & Doors was the first company to locally manufacture general purpose strip curtaining in South Africa. Enquiry no: 108

ssa Abloy recently received Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certificates for its range of concealed Cam-Motion door closers (DC860) and guide rails (G462), once again affirming the environmental smartness of its products. These two product ranges offer aesthetic, efficient and safe solutions to meet a wide range of door opening applications across diverse market segments. This latest certification follows close on the heels of EPD certification of the DC700 and DC500 door closers in Q4 2014/Q1 2015. “An EPD is a standardised way of quantifying the environmental impact of a product or system in life-cycle assessment,” explains Assa Abloy South Africa’s Vice President – Commercial Sales, Quintin Boukan. “EPDs form the basis for the data for building assessment on an ecological level which is

currently laid down in the new European Standard project ‘Sustainability of buildings’”. The declaration also includes details on: Resource consumption and environmental emissions throughout the entire manufacturing process; to what extent a product contributes to the greenhouse effect; the technical properties which are required for assessing the performance of the building products in the building such as durability, heat and sound insulation or the influence on the quality of the indoor air.” The EPD certificate is issued by the German Institute Construction and Environment (IBU), created out of an initiative by manufacturers who decided to support the demand for more sustainability in the construction sector. IBU is currently the only organisation in Germany that issues certificates based on international standards. Enquiry no: 109

Internal segregation Form kits are available, a single basic kit can be used for Form 1 through Form 4b, with the addition of accessories in sequence, both for moulded-case and air circuitbreakers. Additionally, Form 2b with front connections and front access kits are available; another noteworthy innovation. System pro E Power simplifies assembly operations due to pioneering solutions, both for the circuit- breaker and main distribution busbar installation. To illustrate the simplicity; a common busbar system is employed in all applications, with linear and scaled solutions for busbar holders. As a result the busbars may be installed in any position; at the rear or at the side, vertically and under the roof, on the floor and on any horizontal level. In an ever-increasingly competitive environment, the features of ABB’s System pro E Power distribution boards make a compelling argument to consider the switchboard for any power distribution Enquiry no: 110 application.

Innovative spear fencing system

he need for a cost effective security fencing system that will offer the market a low maintenance and sustainable option has been addressed with the introduction of the Spear Fencing system which uses Mentis Expanded Metal. This innovative fencing system is based on a patented concept whereby all forms of welding have been eliminated from the manufacturing and installation process. Attie, Bosman, founder and managing director of Spear Fencing, explains that by removing this process the corrosion factor has been dramatically reduced. “Fencing by the very nature of its application is exposed to all climatic elements including rain and it is more often than not the ingress of water at welding points that starts the corrosion process,” Bosman says. Once the corrosion process has started it is difficult and even impossible to reverse the process and the fencing system will require intensive and expensive ongoing maintenance to mitigate against this. Spear Fencing is a product completely different to conventional fencing and the fencing system offers structural strength, durability, low maintenance and is simple to erect. Bosman says the company is one of few manufacturers that supplies a cost effective and sustainable fencing system throughout Africa. Following an extensive development process the decision was made to use Mentis Expanded Metal as the panel for Spear View EXP fencing system. Explaining

the rationale behind this, Bosman says it was the manufacturing process Andrew Mentis uses that convinced the company to standardise on Mentis Expanded Metal. “The manufacturing process is extremely economical providing a cost effective product for our fencing panel,” he says. Expanded metal is produced by slitting and expanding a solid sheet of metal into a web of diamond-shaped meshes. The metal sheet can, in fact, be expanded up to ten times its original size, without losing material in the process and resulting in a remarkably light mesh. The raised mesh, or Mentex, can be put through an additional process in which the raised meshes are flattened into the same plane as the sheet of metal expanded known as Flatex. Mentex and Flatex Expanded Metal is available in a comprehensive range of sizes, mesh sizes and thicknesses and can be fabricated in any form. Enquiry no: 111

mit h Power Equipment (SPE) has announced the successful introduction of the Kubota L45 diesel TLB (tractor, loader, backhoe) into the southern African market. Sporting the new Kubota HST Plus hydrostatic transmission and packed with power, the L45 is ideal for contractors, landscapers, rental users and home-owners wanting professional results. SPE’s Kubota brand manager Deon Engelke says that with “startling” precision, the new HST Plus’s automated control of both the HST pump and motor gives optimal performance, regardless of the task, working conditions, or operator expertise.

Importantly with a machine that has so many functions, the hydraulic engineering is all-important. All hydraulic hoses are routed through the boom and arm for improved hose protection, durability and improved visibility. With the L45’s HST Plus transmission its heavy duty backhoe operates more effectively than ever and combining the HST Plus with the new backhoe crawling mode significantly increases productivity. The backhoe has a 3m digging depth, a standard hydraulic thumb and a high-performance inching valve. Also, the optional quick coupler helps to change buckets in a “snap”. This is the perfect option for those who do a lot a bucket work and frequently change bucket types. Excellent operation, better visibility, and superior versatility are just some of the reasons the L45’s performance-matched loader is considered unrivalled for power and productivity.

With a 1600kg of breakout force, 1000kg of lift capacity and a 2.8m liftheight, these robust loaders have the strength and reach for most projects. The quick coupler is real operational boon. It is simple to use and no tools are required for easy on/off buckets, pallet forks etc. The L45’s independent PTO allows you to engage and disengage the rear PTO while the tractor is in motion. This means there is no need to stop the tractor to engage or disengage the rear PTO. Also, for safer and more convenient PTO use, the L45 features an auto shut-off and protective slip-up shields. Users all over the world have described the experience of greater power, dependability and cleaner emissions with the 45hp Kubota diesel engine. It starts quickly in cold weather and sustains high torque rise, even under heavy loads or at lower speeds. Enquiry no: 112

mind that all ContiTech belts have been manufactured to the highest possible quality specification and have been designed to meet all OE requirements.” ContiTech timing belts do not have a limited kilometre warranty and are designed to meet or exceed the service intervals as specified by the vehicle manufacturers for any specific vehicle. ContiTech timing belts will have full merchandising, racking and after-sales and marketing support at all major distributors of automotive spares nationwide. “Timing belts are one of the most critical components in an internal combustion engine,” Preddy continues. “It’s especially important to provide

belts with high resistance to elongation, degradation and wear caused by high temperatures and other under-bonnet operating conditions, to ensure optimal engine timing and performance.” ContTech timing belts are reinforced with a temperature-resistant polyamide fabric backing, which also increases the wear resistance of the edges. Programmes to foster a positive working environment

bsenteeism, low staff morale and productivity, high stress levels and anxiety, can have a detrimental impact on the workplace. NICRO Enterprise, a non-profit organisation that offers development programmes for individuals and corporate clients, offers programmes that can meet these challenges and kick-start a positive working environment. The Organisation utilises a tried and tested professional Staff Development and Training offering. This offering holds significant benefits for productivity, profitability, customer satisfaction and employee wellbeing. NICRO Enterprise offers corporate clients a comprehensive range of initiatives, which can be personalised to suit the specific needs of the workforce, as well as operational requirements. The organisation focuses on the lower LSM staff, as they realise that

you do not employ someone just for 40 hours of work, you employ the person and they with their problems too.

They have developed over a 100 programmes targeting all aspects from depression to being more selfaware. Some of the most popular programmes are grounded in complete, modern learning principles and are fully aligned with a modern under-

standing of workplace challenges: • The Safely Home programme teaches companies about the effects of alcohol on the capacity to drive, as well as provides an understanding the legal limits of alcohol consumption. • Ethics in the Workplace is an intervention focussing on workers’ perceptions and attitudes about crime in the workplace and understanding and identifying unethical conduct. • Relating in the Workplace is a programme about managing yourself and building healthy workplace relationships. • To help recognise workplace bullying and harassment, individuals can participate in the Diversity in the Workplace / Celebrating Humanity programme. • The Working Parent programme aims to improve the ability to cope with the associated stresses of being a parent and provides education on child and adolescent development, as well as advice regarding

Short course on admixtures and concrete rheology

r Pascal Boustingorry D (pictured), the Interface Physical Chemistry team

manager at Chryso France, recently visited South Africa to give a short course on the ‘Effect of Admixtures on Concrete Rheology’. This was part of a two day programme put together by the South African Society of Rheology (SASOR) and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. “I focussed on superplasticisers as these admixtures have the greatest effect on concrete rheology. It is extremely important to realise that one superplasticiser will not suit every type of concrete application and every type of cement. This is the reason why Chryso has such a large range of superplasticisers, as

each superplasticiser is specifically designed to achieve a maximum performance with a certain type of cement chemistry. Chryso has the ability to manufacture and design polymers (the building blocks for admixtures) that can achieve targeted performances and can be modified to suit certain conditions,” explains Boustingorry. A key figure at Chryso France’s international research and development in Sermaises, Boustingorry focuses on how the interaction between molecules and cement affects the performance of admixtures. “Chryso is a global company, with 20 subsidiaries and a presence

in over 70 countries. It is therefore important to acknowledge that people do not work with concrete in the same way in every country and each country faces a different set of technical challenges with regard to concrete. Therefore the same admixture will not work everywhere,” he says. Looking at trends, Boustingorry has noticed that customer requirements with regard to concrete are increasing: “Traditionally, customers were only concerned with water retention, workability retention and strength. Today, customers are demanding greater performance and a lot more properties from concrete. For instance, they want concrete to flow in a certain way and they are looking at finishability. This ties in with concrete rheology.”

Working together for local agricultural development

B

ayer has joined forces with The Future Farmers Foundation as a key supporter of the Future Farmers initiative based in Howick. Future Farmers in partnership with Bayer, is part of the company’s commitment to local agricultural development through sustainable food production, skills development and job creation. Future Farmers main focus is on facilitating training, mentoring and apprenticeships for young South Africans who have a passion for farming and would not otherwise easily have access to a sustainable career in agriculture. The programme allows participants to gain real-world experience on local commercial farms for a

period of between two and five years in order to ensure that they have a full understanding of what farming entails. Once ready, trainees are given the opportunity to hone these skills through international mentorship opportunities or share back their knowledge within their communities to transfer skills, boost agricultural productivity and promote a system of sustainable food production. Finally, Future Farmers usually go on to have successful commercial farming careers. “Bayer is committed to the development of the agricultural industry in South Africa, and this partnership will enable us to contribute to the sector in a meaningful way. Supporting

the Foundation’s vision to develop commercial farming skills for sustainable food production not only helps to create jobs but also enables opportunities for skills transfer and development of the overall industry, which could ultimately contribute to increase farm output by using Africa’s agricultural resources more effectively,” says Tasniem Patel, Head of Communications at Bayer Southern Africa. “Sustainable production of high quality food should be a top priority on the development agenda for Africa to not only to meet the needs of our growing population, but also our economic trade commitments and growth potential. Further, if we consider the current

state of the agricultural sector which is under immense pressure in the context of the current drought – it points to the increasing need to not only utilise resources more efficiently, but also the need to protect crops and increase yields. Education, skills development and conversations around modern agriculture is therefore critical.” Founder of the Future Farmers Foundation, Judy Stuart explains: “Our apprenticeship programme is flourishing with more and more future farmers placed on farms each year. Having various industry mentors and opportunities that the partnership with Bayer pro-

"Water for All" changes lives New appointments

T

hrough the Water for All project, Atlas Copco, a leading provider of sustainable industrial productivity solutions, sets out to make clean, potable water a possibility for all and the latest

beneficiaries of this remarkable initiative are learners from the Mhlazane Primary School in Rorke’s Drift, KwaZuluNatal. The Water for All project finances the installation of infrastructure and facilities that promote accessibility to clean water for disadvantaged communities in the rural areas. The project was first introduced to the Rorke’s Drift area in 2011 and commenced with the drilling of three boreholes by Atlas Copco, in association with local NGO, the David Rattray Foundation.

“Mhlazane Primary school was one of the beneficiaries of the project which was completed in late 2012,” explains Kgothatso Ntsie, Atlas Copco South Africa’s Corporate Communications Manager, South and sub-Sahara Africa. Prior to the introduction of the boreholes, the school of over 465 learners, collected water from the river or depended on rainwater harvested in Jojo tanks. However this has now all changed thanks to the Water for All initiative which has made a huge and positive impact on the school. Easier access to water is facilitating some of the primary school’s projects including the vegetable garden which is used in their learner feeding scheme. On 13 November 2015, a delegation of eight Atlas Copco board members visited Mhlazane Primary School to witness the project’s efforts and growth in South Africa.

“Home where the heart is”

I

n August 2015 representatives of Voltex Durban visited Lakehaven Children’s Home to make arrangements for a day-outing but following a tour of the home and facilities it was abundantly clear to Ivan Govender of Voltex Durban that whilst the outing would be a delightful experience for these kids – it would not address the desperately poor conditions of the boys’ cottage which they called ‘home’. “Our hearts were torn by what we saw as a number of areas in the building presented real safety issues to these boys such as open electrical switches, peeling paint, unsecured windows and so forth”.

Without hesitation, the Voltex Durban team immediately sprang into action to co-ordinate a complete renovation of the cottage. Together with generous donations, sponsorships and assistance from their various suppliers, partners, customers and local businesses, namely - Tile Africa; JBN Power; JMC Lighting; Durban Domestic; KZN Switchboard; Dees Electrical; KGH Electrical; Harms Refrigeration; Mikes Electrical; PK Electrical; Billson Electrical; Cryril Nair; Powergen Electrical; Dafco Paints; Silveray; - the Voltex team started on the project in late October.

SEW-EURODRIVE – Driving the world

The total renovation took 5 weeks to complete and included everything from a new kitchen to new electrical boards, switches, painting, cupboards, storage, railings, security and flooring to aesthetics such as adding curtains, bedding, pathways and a highly essential vegetable patch. The newly renovated cottage, is home for boys between the ages of 6 to 12. The project ended with the much anticipated fun-filled day for the children who enjoyed a boat cruise, other outdoor activities and a fabulous Voltex Durban braai. Enquiry no: 120
