Industries' ‘Big 5’

April / may 2015

arch 2015 saw a major milestone for local industry in general and the municipality of Msunduzi, near Pietermaritzburg, in particular, when Afroprop launched Ibhubesi Industrial Park in Ashburton, immediately adjoining the Lynnfield Park / Lion Park Interchange on the N3 between Pietermaritzburg and Durban. Ibhubesi is a direct Zulu translation meaning ‘Lion’ and in keeping with this theme, Afroprop believes that this area offers the Big 5 of industry; from ideal location on the main transport route between the port of Durban and Gauteng; ultimate access via 500sqm of “full diamond” interchange off the N3; a secure purpose built development; superior infrastructure and service quality and, finally, development that has been undertaken in full co-operation with the Environmental Authorities. The result is a superior location to ‘do business’. The development process from conceptualisation to the completion of this launch phase has not been without its problems. According to Doug Littler, MD of Afroprop Natal, “The Afroprop Natal team

are very proud of what they have achieved in an exceptionally difficult Environmental development.” The property currently offers 72 serviced Light Industrial zoned sites on a 100ha site with 35 ha set aside for conservation. The remaining 65 ha provide a range of property sizes, from 3900m² to 5 ha. With several sales already on the table, this development, which is aimed at a Logistic type Industry, looks positive to prosper. As one of the few major industrial developments in the Msunduzi region, the Industrial Park will offer a significant rates benefit to the local authority, who have been nothing but supportive during the period from initiation to the completion of this launch phase. It is envisaged that when fully established and developed, in the order of 7 000 people will be employed. Once the Industrial Park is complete, Afroprop Natal would have established a major new Light Industrial Estate that will have made a major contribution to an intersection upgrade, a sewage plant upgrade and an electrical Infrastructure continued on page two

New logistics hub perfectly located

T

he OneLogix group, a JSE listed logistics service provider, has made a substantial investment in Cato Ridge. The recently completed R130 million OneLogix Logistics Hub is a large, cutting edge development situated at Umlaas Road. It has been purposefully designed to substantially enhance the group’s ability to offer quality and cost effective logistics services to its customers. Ian Lourens, CEO of OneLogix said, “Not only does our OneLogix Logistics Hub benefit our clients but we will create additional direct and indirect skilled and semi-skilled jobs, further to the group’s current workforce of 1,800 people.” Several of the existing group facilities within the immediate KwaZuluNatal region have been integrated into this state of the art 14 hectare (or 140 000m²) site, in a manner that considerably improves the cost effectiveness, quality and range of services on offer from OneLogix. “The group acquired a large tract of land for this purpose within the

municipal area of Mkhambathini, in an area specifically designated by local and provincial authorities within KwaZulu-Natal as an economic opportunity node,” Lourens explained. Furthermore, there is abundant space for future expansion of this Logistics Hub facility, an avenue that the group has already activated. Given the success of phase one of the development, the Group is actively investigating a further 10 ha or (100 000 square meter) extension to this facility. According to Lourens, the site is perfectly located to ensure logistics cost-efficiency. It is easily accessible and visible from the N3 highway, Africa’s busiest port, to Gauteng, the economic heartland of South Africa, and beyond. It is also a direct route into the economically burgeoning Southern African continent. In addition, the Logistics Hub is located well outside of the coastal rust belt areas and is therefore not

storage on offer. The facility has the ability to store 5,000 motor vehicles and trucks for onward distribution across the country, but also include state-of-the-art technology, a sophisticated workshop, driver accommodation, driver training facilities and a pre-inspection facility for OEM’s. A deliberate decision was taken to select a property with a rail siding where the proposed rail upgrade link connecting Durban to Johannesburg is imminent. “The provision for a fully functional rail siding has been incorporated into the site layout and design and we have a view to investigate a mutually beneficial Public Private Partnership with Transnet,” said Lourens. In conclusion, Lourens commented that this Logistics Hub is a pivotal step forward for the OneLogix group. Not only does the facility answer to many needs of the OEM’s but similarly has a positive social impact on the Mkhambathini community. The facilities such as driver accommodation and training are vital to one of our most important assets - staff. “All in all we are extremely proud of what we have put into place,” concluded Enquiry no: 3 Lourens.

firewall constructed of Corobrik's clay face bricks protected a warehouse from being consumed by a devastating industrial fire. In the early hours of 26 March, a fire broke out at the Sun Oil warehouse in Mobeni, south of Durban. The fire, which lasted about six hours, threatened to spread to the adjacent Kansai Plascon warehouse but was prevented by the building's six-meter high firewall. Wayne Usher, from Walker Smith Architects and Jim Martin from Martin & Associates Consulting Engineers, inspected the wall following the fire. Firewalls are commonly used to separate larger buildings into smaller areas or, as in this instance, to sepa-

rate buildings on different sites from each other to prevent the spread of fire. “This is particularly important where there is no building line and it is permitted to build right up to your boundary,” said Usher. “As a passive means of fire protection they are invaluable as they are relatively cheap to install, require little to no maintenance and, as evidenced here, work very effectively in stopping the rapid spread of fire.” Firewalls can be provided with ratings from 30 minutes – which is typically a single-skin brick wall of 110mm - up to 120 minutes – which is usually a double skin brick wall of 230mm - as in this case. These walls are constructed from hollow concrete blocks, cement bricks or clay bricks. “I believe one of the main reasons this wall withstood an intense fire for six hours without failing was that it was constructed from clay brick and not one of the other options,”

explained Usher. “This is due to the process of making clay bricks where they are fired in a kiln at temperatures well over 1000º Celsius.” He concluded that in this instance, the wall is leaning post-fire because of the mortar used to bind the bricks having degenerated in the fire, and not any failing in the case of the bricks. This section of the wall can be rebuilt using the same bricks. “It is in intense fire conditions like these where the fire resistant qualities of clay brickwork really come to the fore. The incombustible qualities of fired clay bricks aside, equally important are the mineral properties of clay brick, recognized for meeting all necessary requirements for healthy living. Clay brick plays its environmental part so well, assuring no release of volatile organic compounds or toxic fumes to impinge on air quality under fire conditions.” said Peter Kidger, Director of Marketing at Corobrik. Major expansion at Hammarsdale plant continued from page one

F

ibertex South Africa has recently committed itself to a major expansion project at their Hammarsdale plant by investing in the region of R90 million in a new nonwoven manufacturing line. In addition, the company has also purchased a second complimentary state-of-the-art polypropylene fibre manufacturing line, which is installed in their Plant 2. Both new lines plus the existing line put Fibertex in a very strong

position technically and in terms of available capacity. The production line is an Andritz NSC needle punch line, similar to the one already installed at Fibertex South Africa, and other locations within the Group. The line is regarded as the most modern in the Southern Hemisphere and has the capability of being able to supply a variety of high-tech product types to the automotive, industrial and geotextiles segments. It is being manufactured in France and is expected to be delivered in the middle of July.

The line is unique as it has the ability to manufacture products wider than 6,0m and also in weights from 65gsm to 1,200gsm. The line is equipped with optimisation software which keeps the product weights and process controls into a tight set of parameters, resulting in cost advantages versus competitor products. This investment was undertaken in conjunction with Fibertex Nonwovens increasing its ownership interest in Fibertex South Africa from 26% to 74.2% by purchasing the 48,2% Safyr shares. The IFU shall

retain their ownership interest of 25.8% and will invest accordingly. Fibertex South Africa CEO, Chris O´Neill, sees the capacity expansion as an important milestone for the company as this is in line with the strategies and growth objectives of the company, including the base for expansion into Africa. Fibertex has experienced growing demand not only for products for the automotive and industrial applications but also in the mining and infrastructure programmes. The technology of the new line is so advanced that it is difficult

for competitors to match the products in terms of robustness, quality and cost performance. The company bought the property in Hammarsdale 5 years ago as a Greenfields operation and saw the opportunity to utilize an already existing building which could be modified for their own use. They currently supply Mercedes Benz, Toyota, IAC and Feltex in this country and O’Neill feels that this investment into the plant specifically and the Hammarsdale region, in general, will make a positive contribution to the economy both at macro and micro level. Bluff pipejacking project A

precast concrete jacking pipe with watertight joints developed by Concrete Manufacturers Association member Concrete Units at the request of geotechnical engineering company,Franki Africa, has proved extremely effective at Durban’s Bluff area. Franki’s requirement was for jacking pipes with leak-proof joints. It required them for use in pipejacking projects where it was necessary to jack below the water table. Concrete Units designed the new pipe in consultation with Pretoria-based pipes design specialist company Pipes. Franki has

successfully deployed the pipes in several jacking contracts in the Western Cape since Concrete Units started manufacturing them in 2012. The latest contract is one of the most difficult below-the-watertable jacking contracts the company has undertaken in recent years. Awarded by eThekwini Municipality’s stormwater division in August last year, it is an upgrade of the stormwater drainage at the Transnet Freight Rail Reserve near Wentworth Station. This area, which is situated at the lowest point of the Bluff area, has been subject to heavy flooding for many years due to

the inadequacy of the existing drainage system. The railway lines that give access across the reserve to the shunting yards at Wentworth Station, as well as adjacent buildings, are often flooded. The new system being installed consists of five 100 m long pipelines installed side-by-side under the railway lines, with two large in-situ cast concrete chambers at each end to evenly distribute the stormwater flow both into and out of the pipes. The construction of the chambers and of a new culvert that ties into the existing stormwater system form part of the contract, scheduled for completion in June this year. “The challenge here is that the pipes are to be installed 6 m below the ground water level, where the ground consists of running sand with a consistency of soup,” commented Byron Field, Franki’s Contracts Manager for

pipe-jacking projects. Preparation has consequently been a prolonged process, involving the installation of a de-watering system along the full length of the jacks and sheet piling around all the new chambers and culvert works. Having pipes with watertight joints was shown to be even more critical in this case than in the previous contracts in which they have been deployed. “The sand is so fine that it would have passed through the joints of ordinary jacking pipes,” Field said. The joint design in the new pipe represents a departure from the inthe-wall joint (ITWJ) design of most conventional jacking pipes. This pipe has a butt-ended joint with a steel band cast into it to provide a close fit for the receiving pipe-end, which is equipped with an O-ring to seal the joint. The tight tolerance of the joint in the new pipe also improves its alignment characteristics compared with the conventional product. For the Bluff contract Concrete

Units’ Meyerton plant manufactured

and supplied Franki with a total of 500 m of 1470 internal diameter pipes in individual pipe lengths of 2,4 m. Enquiry no: 7

Playing a vital role in major interchange upgrade

T

he massive R352-million Umgeni Interchange upgrade currently in progress along one of Durban’s arterial routes will be a feat of engineering skill when completed. Sika was proud to supply a varied selection of their products for this multi-bridge construction project. Having successfully designed the bridges for the Gillooly’s Interchange in Gauteng, Consulting Engineers, Hatch Goba were commissioned by SANRAL in 2009 to design an upgrade for the old split-diamond, signalised intersection between the N2 (National Road) and the M19. The new design was for a free-flow directional four-level systems interchange; involving the construction of five new bridges and two pedestrian bridges, with two incremental launch bridges as prominent features. The project was awarded to main contractors Rumdel Cape and Mascon. As both highways comprise major traffic routes, the emphasis was to keep traffic disruption to an absolute minimum. Additional challenges were space constraints caused by the nearby Umngeni River and the adjacent residential and commercial developments. The standard segmental method of bridge building for two directional ramps at the intersection was therefore scrapped in favour of the innovative method known as

incremental launch. This method entails building the entire bridge deck from one end of the structure and eliminating the need for formwork, thereby allowing traffic flow to continue uninterrupted. The incremental launch technology involves sliding sections of bridge deck over special bearings, which are concrete blocks covered with stainless steel and reinforced elastomeric pads. The first such bridge constructed was 232m long, from Umgeni Road onto the N2 Northbound while the second one measured 205m long from the N2 Northbound onto Umgeni Road. Metier Mixed Concrete supplied shotcrete for rock stabilisation of the Umgeni on-ramp to the N2 Southbound. Two Sika products were added to the shotcrete: SikaPlast V210, an aqueous polymer solution that is a multi-purpose water reducer and superplasticiser, and SikaTard-930, a retarding concrete admixture developed for the control of cement hydration. It can be used in wet or dry spray shotcrete where cement hydration of the concrete mix is prevented (for up to three days, if required). A number of other Sika products were also supplied for the project. Enquiry no: 12

Providing financial support services for SMMEs T HE Small Business Finance and Support (SBFS) Director, Mr Vincent Heynes announced recently that they have launched bridging finance products and other small business support services to bridge the gap for much needed finance, particularly for small businesses in the construction industry. SBFS is looking to increase its client base in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal . SBFS provides financial and strategic support to Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) in the South African construction sector. This includes national infrastructure development projects as either contractors and/or subcontractors of larger, more established construction firms.

The bridging finance and support to SMMEs have already kicked off in the Eastern Cape with SBFS’s client base increasing daily. The objective of SBFS is to bring about sustainable enterprise development, specifically through the creation and conservation of SMME jobs, and to ensure that SMMEs have access to adequate financial and non-financial resources. The organisations lending methodology is underpinned by the philosophy of not being a “lender” but rather a partner throughout the loan period and beyond. “Our existence is premised on the current huge gap in the SMME lending market. As a result of this, we seek to address the need by investing in SMME capacita-

tion and unlocking funding in a more efficient and effective manner,” said Vincent Heynes, SBFS Director. In addition, SBFS seeks to cut back on red tape by putting the needs of SMMEs first by reducing unnecessary paper work which tends to have a negative effect and results in delayed turnaround times for SMMEs. SBFS offering sees SMME’s enjoying a quick turnaround in the approval of applications for finance and enjoy highly competitive interest rates and payment terms. Furthermore, SBFS offer cutting edge products and services, providing options for clients based on the size of the loan amount and the support requirement. Enquiry no: 13

New Denis Hurley Centre

T

HE heart of Warwick Junction is beating with new life in the form of the recently constructed community building, Denis Hurley Centre. Replacing the demolished 106-year-old par-

ish centre which sits adjacent to the Emmanuel Cathedral, the new community centre is named after the former archbishop of Durban, Denis Hurley, who actively spoke out against the atrocities of apartheid for five decades. Hurley believed a church should be a ‘community serving humanity’ and this centre will allow for his work to continue. Talking about the multi-faith establishment, Gonzalo Prieto of Ruben Reddy Architects said the aim was to make the building as

energy efficient as possible to cut down on future costs. Originally the plan was to renovate the old parish centre, but it was so rundown that it wasn’t financially viable. The building was an AMAFA heritage site but, unfortunately, very little of the existing building or materials were worth recycling because of the state of disrepair. However they did manage to salvage some components of the former centre which have been incorporated into the new centre.

Tax compliance – keeping abreast of recent changes at SARS

T

he South African Revenue Services (SARS) has engaged in a five-year tax compliance programme spanning the tax years 2012/2013 to 2016/2017. Ilsa Groenewald (pictured), BDO’s Associate Director for Tax, takes a closer look at the current state of affairs. “SARS’ primary aim is to ensure that tax compliance is a shared national priority for all South Africans,” Groenewald says. “Their message is that everyone has a vested interest and a stake in tax compliance and that all sectors of society should join hands and work together towards achieving a tax moral society with integrity, honesty and equality as its core values.” Why a focus on tax compliance? Tax compliance is critical since ensuring that taxpayers and traders, along with intermediaries like tax practitioners and clearing agents, meet their tax and legal obligations spreads the tax burden and enables long term sustainable growth and social investment. Continued education and communi-

cation by SARS to all stakeholders is a critical component of this process. SARS has, over the past decade, conducted various workshops and prepared guides and brochures to educate the general public, business sector and professional tax practitioners. “For example, SARS has made huge progress in simplifying the tax and customs processes by introducing e-filing,” Groenewald says. “This enables taxpayers to meet their tax obligations in a relatively easy and cost-effective manner.” “Continuous motivation of and by registered tax practitioners is also a critical component. As tax practitioners, we need to remind our clients why they are paying tax and that tax laws exists to protect the country from unwanted, harmful and illegal goods, and to ensure sustainable economic progress.” Groenewald is of the view that the

majority of South African taxpayers are now compliant and accept their responsibility, which is a marked change over the last two decades or so. “Those who are less inclined to be compliant should be aware that, with the introduction of the Tax Administration Act, SARS is now able to identify and collect outstanding income taxes and indirect taxes such as PAYE and VAT much more effectively and efficiently,” she adds. “Whilst the overall tax compliance climate in South Africa has improved, South Africans need to continuously focus their efforts on sustaining diligent tax compliance and creating a countrywide culture that is conducive to full compliance by all taxpayers. Tax evasion is no different from any other crime and together we can create a society with healthy tax habits.” Enquiry no: 15

Safety laser scanner available

euze Electronic’s latest RSL 400 series safety laser scanner is available from Countapulse Controls, the southern African supplier of sensing, measurement, counting, switching, monitoring and positioning instrumentation. The RSL 400 series consists of 16 device versions, with operating ranges of up to 8.25 m, Gerry Bryant, Countapulse Controls, Managing Director, says. Leuze safety laser scanners can be configured via Bluetooth and Ethernet TCP/IP. Despite the large number of possible field pairs (100), the creation of independent configurations with application-orientated one-step configuration is simpler than ever, Bryant notes. The devices large scanning angle of 270° is especially advantageous, for example, in the case of mounting on corners or edges for front and side guarding and can, depending on the application, replace a second laser scanner. With two completely autonomous protective

functions, two pairs of safety switching outputs and nine other configurable switching outputs, the RSL 430 variant is one device that solves two protection tasks simultaneously. All devices demonstrate a high level of availability on account of the high resolution (rod test), in addition to a high insensitivity to dust due to the high scanning rate. A large plain-text display, with integrated electronic spirit level, ensures simple alignment when mounting the connector unit. The connector unit contains the entire cable management, and forms the mechanical and electrical basis of the devices. The scanner itself can be removed at any time using standard tools and fitted with other RSL 400 devices without the need for realignment, readjustment or lengthy configuration. “This is an important advantage in terms of ease of maintenance and repair,” Bryant adds. Group expands sub-Saharan distribution

s part of the new joint venture into Africa, the Hytec Group has increased its distribution and support of the full range of Bosch Rexroth Oil Control cartridge valves throughout sub-Saharan Africa. This expanded support will enhance the Group’s logistical, sales and support capabilities of the products, and includes a more competitive pricing structure for this series. The valve range simplifies conventional compact hydraulic systems, and enhances hydraulic circuits where space and weight present fundamental application constraints. Bosch Rexroth cartridge valves are characterised by a very long service life: at an operating pressure of 350 bar, the cartridge solenoid valves are rated for a product life of 10 million cycles. The unique design of the cartridge valves reduces the amount of interconnecting pipe-

work required within the hydraulic circuit through a customised manifold. This reduces the overall weight and space requirements of the machine, resulting in decreased power requirements – contributing to better all-round energy efficiency. Because the interconnections of piping within a conventional hydraulic system are a common source of fluid leakage, the compact design and reduced piping requirements of the cartridge valves also reduces inspection and maintenance requirements, facilitating a more efficient hydraulic operation. The valves offer a typical working pressure of 350 bar, with some rated to 630 bar, and flow rates of up to 700 l/min, for fluids between -30°C to 100°C. The screw-in cartridge valve range includes pressure control valves, check valves, counterbalance valves, flow control valves, logic

elements, directional valves and proportional valves. These cartridge valves are used extensively in mobile applications, for instance in lifting platforms, agricultural machines, earthmoving and materials handling equipment and mobile cranes. The valves are also used in many industrial applications. While mechanical and solenoid cartridge valves remain the most demanded solution, the demand for proportional valves is growing due to a recent increase in automation projects. Oil Control cartridge valves will be stocked by HYSA, Hytec’s central warehouse for all Bosch Rexroth hydraulic products, and distributed via the Hytec branch network. Enquiry no: 20

Vision sensor sets new standard

O

mron has launched its new FQ vision sensor which sets a new standard for image inspection and code verification. According to Omron Country Manager Victor Marques, it was created to primarily address the market’s requirements for an easy-to-use vision sensor that can address more complex applications, thanks to improved performance, expanded functionality and a wider range of models. The FQ2 vision sensor combines the camera, lens and lighting in a single compact package, complete with image processing capability which eliminates the need for a separate controller. The compact size and all-in-one design makes the sensor

simple to mount and ideal for use in confined spaces.

T h e F Q 2 supports all of Omron’s inspection algorithms, i n c l u d ing shape search, colour inspection, optical character recognition (OCR), code reading and verification. For shape detection, the Shape Search

II algorithm achieves high speed, highly reliable detection of position and 360°angle even if the objects are overlapping. In addition the Shape Search II algorithm can detect up to 32 objects in the same image, enabling high speed inspection of groups of items. For character recognition, Omron’s unique OCR technology enables stable recognition and verification of even worn or distorted characters, and requires no setting of parameters to compensate for character contrast or positional offsetting. The large, built-in dictionary includes over 80 different fonts, plus worn, blurred and distorted character variations, and numerous size and background Enquiry no: 21 variations.

new generation of vision and barcode sensors offering multiple tools and resolution options has been introduced by RET Automation Controls. The iVu Plus Gen2 line, developed by

Banner Engineering, includes integral and remote screen models for use in a wide range of inspection, machine vision and quality control applications. The vision sensors with built-in illumination are designed to solve applications that would typically require multiple photoelectric or proximity sensors. They now include a full resolution option to detect small features, as well as the capability to use multiple sensor tools in the same inspection. Bar code readers validate twelve 1D and 2D barcode formats to support advanced traceability in all

industries. They offer a coarse mode resolution setting that can provide significantly faster read rates, especially for 2D barcodes. The sensors can store and control up to 30 inspections for fast product changeover. The rugged IP67 rated housing allows use in hostile environments. Remote displays are available in both machine mountable and handheld configurations. An intuitive touch-screen user interface allows the user to configure, monitor and modify inspections without an external PC. n facilities and constrained work areas I which have a high number of connectors, things can quickly get confusing. Where does the connector come from? Where does it lead to? Does the connector transmit data, signals or power? ESCHA, the German connector and housing specialist provides two solutions: Colored rings as well as label carriers for the clear marking of cables and connectors. The colored rings are available in eleven colors and can easily be clipped onto the connector body of an M12x1 round connector or onto the cable of an RJ45 connector or onto a flange with an overmolded cable. ESCHA also offers four sizes of label carriers for applications where color coding is insufficient as more details have to be displayed on the cable. The label carriers are slipped onto the cable and can thus be quickly and easily mounted. Junction cables come standard with label carriers. These two solutions will speed up installation as the connectors will be easily identifiable and will also help maintenance teams to identify the connector they are looking for. Enquiry no: 23

WATER & EFFLUENT MANAGEMENT

T

Project to supply fresh water to rural KZN

he Jozini-Ingwavuma Bulk Water Supply project is a government initiative to create a sustainable solution for the uMkhanyakude District Municipality’s (KwaZulu-Natal) water shortages. As part of this project, Veolia Water Technologies South Africa is supplying a turnkey water treatment plant, the ‘Shemula Water Treatment Plant’, to produce 20 megalitres of potable water a day. Veolia was contracted by uMkhanyakude District Municipality to design and build the new Shemula Water Treatment Plant. Deemed

a presidential project, the initiative will also entail Veolia educating surrounding communities about the importance of water, as well as employing local community members during construction and to maintain the Shemula Water Treatment Plant. Situated in northern KwaZuluNatal, Pongola Dam in Jozini has historically been a single purpose dam providing water for irrigation requirements to the surrounding farms. Through the national government intervention to respond to the dramatic increase in rural

development and increasing population in the area and the surrounding districts, this project has become the key to unlock service delivery in the region. For Veolia, this project began in January 2014 and will be integrated with phase 1A (currently in construction by an external company) which consists of all civil works and infrastructure for bulk reticulation. Veolia is responsible for phase 1B which entails the turnkey water treatment solution, including civil, mechanical and electrical work. The new water treatment plant will be capable of producing 20 megalitres of potable water a day and addresses all facets of water treatment, from sedimentation and clarification to filtration and disinfection. “The water extracted from the Pongola River is highly turbid – with an extreme turbidity count of 280 NTU. We were required, therefore, to implement an adequate sedimentation process that will produce consistent quality water with acceptable turbidity levels that will meet SANS 241 standards,” says Blake Cooley, Project Engineer, Veolia Water Technologies South Africa. The process will reduce the turbidity level to a count of just 1NTU with

W

the use of two Veolia clarifloctuators for the sedimentation process, followed by five bed rapid gravity filters with monolithic floor panels for the filtration stage. “Apart from the critical potable water supply, this project is also geared towards connecting districts and educating the rural communities on the importance of water conservation, and on the correct process to extract clean water from the source”, adds Cooley. In light of this commitment to the community, Veolia has also employed local engineers and local labour to work on the plant.

New dam liner

ater is the lifeblood of South Africa, yet with decreasing quality and wastage, it has become increasingly scarce. In order to combat this worrying trend, an HDPE dam liner is available to act as an effective barrier against water loss caused by seepage and pollution of ground water in farming, municipal and industrial applications. The resilient and cost-effective product, branded as ‘Dam Liner’, is available through industrial packaging and construction sheeting expert Damax Kahn & Kahn Plastics. Managing director David Tromp points out that the liner affects a 100 percent seal. “It boasts high tensile strength and is stress, crack, puncture, tear, chemical, and ultraviolet resistant,” he explains. According to Tromp, these qualities

In addition, Veolia will remain on site for twelve months after the project is complete to train the engineers on proper maintenance techniques. Phase 1A is being undertaken by Veolia’s civil works partner Icon Construction. Phase 1A and 1B will be complete by April 2015 with running water delivered to the surrounding communities. Phase 2, commencing in 2017, will see the plant expand to 40 megalitres per day. Veolia has designed the plant with scalability to accommodate this future growth. Enquiry no: 24

company recently adopted Dam Liner for use in its clean-up and filtration dam, while an agricultural project adopted the product to create storage dams for cattle feed lots. Dam Liner is available in a standard 3,4 m width and, depending on the thickness of the liner, is supplied in lengths varying from 80mto 150m per roll. Tromp adds that Dam Liner is installed using specialised machinery by trained staff. “Using a combination of a wedge welder and an extrusion welder, the fusion of the plastic sheeting is completed swiftly and costeffectively. Another benefit of Dam Liner is that it is the only product of its kind that is manufactured in South Africa. We are a proudly South African company that uses locally manufactured products, as opposed to our competitors who use imported products,” he concludes.

also contribute to the product’s durability and cost-effectiveness. “Dam Liner boasts a long service life, is fully-recyclable and, unlike similar products on the market, does not require yearly maintenance. As a result, the product has been used extensively by a large number of local municipalities for their sewerage works projects.” What’s more, a major petroleum

TRANSPORT & WAREHOUSING Sapics 2015: people over pallets

P

roductivity of workers in South African warehouses is in some cases believed to be as little as a third of that of their overseas counterparts. This, together with a big increase in labour costs, high fixed costs, labour instability and supplier unreliability makes warehousing – which is one of the most important links in the supply chain – also its most vulnerable. “There are however much that warehouse operators can do to improve their productivity,” says Martin Bailey (pictured), SAPICS board member and chairman at Industrial Logistic Systems." Bailey will present a workshop entitled 20 Steps to Productivity Improvement in Warehouses at the SAPICS 2015 conference, taking place from 31 May - 2 June at Sun City. Maintaining a ‘people over pallets’ philosophy, Bailey says becoming more customerfocused is another way of increasing the overall effectiveness of the supply chain. “Since the warehouse is often the final inter-

I

face between the vendor and the customer, it just makes sense to use this opportunity to deliver better service along with goods,” he says. In a case study that will be examined during Bailey’s workshop, he refers to a SA retailer that has greatly improved its efficiency by ensuring that products leave the warehouse in a sale-ready format, so they simply need to be wheeled down the aisles at their destination. “Such innovations come from simply making the effort to understand customer needs, right down to what kinds of trucks their warehouses can receive.” Another major global trend that Bailey will discuss is e-commerce. He says that what happens in warehouses today is increasingly being dictated by end consumers. “We used to deliver truck-loads, but now we deliver single items in a shorter space of time than before. For this one must have excellent IT systems and well-trained people,” he says. “In the end, it becomes clear that the success of today’s warehouse operations depends more on the calibre of its people and their commitment to great customer service than simply the number of packages they’re able to store and dispatch,” Bailey concludes. AW Vehicle Manufacturers SA (Pty) Ltd has started ramping up production of a new FAW medium-weight truck range, dubbed the Tiger, to be introduced onto the local and southern African markets in May. This will mark another ‘first’ in FAW’s local history when they start full production of the Tiger range at the Coega-based production plant. Yusheng Zhang, CEO of FAW Vehicle Manufacturers SA, says: “FAW continues its trendsetting path in local truck manufacture. Not only have we managed to produce our FAW trucks at the best quality levels, comparable – if not better - than our FAW parent company in China - but we’ve been able to do so in a very short period considering our plant became fully operational from July last year only.”

"Since our Body Building Facility was commission in January we have also been building tipper bodies from SKD packs imported from our parent plant in China, and providing finished tipper trucks to our growing pool of customers.” While the first FAW ‘full-bodied’ tippers roll off the lines at the assembly plant and body shop, the production team is already assessing the viability of producing drop-side bodies for their range of robust and durable vehicles spanning the heavy and extra-heavy commercial vehicle ranges on offer in Southern Africa.

Reaching new frontiers

ew opportunities, new content, new activities, new networking opportunities – these are just some of the exciting additions that delegates to the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF)’s annual Congress can look forward to this year. Aptly-themed “New Frontiers”, this mouldbreaking event takes place from 14 to 16 October 2015 at the Durban International Convention Centre, KwaZulu-Natal. Explaining the reasoning behind the theme and the changes to the event, SAAFF CEO Dave Logan (pictured) says: “The freight forwarding industry is facing major changes as it fights to stay viable in a changing global environment. For freight forwarders to survive – and thrive – a major paradigm shift is needed. This is what this year’s Congress will focus on”.

Logan says that freight forwarding has become a progressively complex and specialised service in the current context of globalisation, tight security regulations and skills shortages. “We are operating in a turbulent environment,” he says. “Freight forwarders face numerous challenges: volatile fuel prices, rising toll costs, restrictive carbon requirements and many others. Maintaining a competitive advantage under these conditions requires strategic planning and decisive action. Business is becoming more and more challenging as complexity increases.” Proactive topics that will be covered at this year’s Congress include latest international trends, Customs practices, industry modernisation, BBBEE,

legislation, supply chain and lots more. Currently the industry’s outlook is fairly positive, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasting a compound annual growth rate of 4.1% over the next four years. Even better news is that Africa is the second fastest growing market, with a CAGR of 4.4%. The SAAFF Congress is a powerful platform structured to equip delegates with more practical knowledge on the realities and challenges of the current trading environment and the tools required to leverage these opportunities. It is also a forum for all stakeholders – from sponsors and suppliers to members and customers - to engage directly with senior decision-makers of freight forwarding companies, government and policy makers.

Strengthening local tailift market

S

kyjacks Tailifts and Ratcliff Tailifts have announced that they have entered into a joint venture as at 1 March this year, that will effectively combine 60 years of tailift knowledge, R&D and manufacture, benefitting the clients of both operations with access to top quality lifts that are robust and cost effective in the African environment. The companies will soon move to a single manufacturing facility at SkyPark, in Anderbolt Extension, Boksburg, that has been purpose-built for the manufacture, servicing and fitment of tailifts. “Given the risks inherent in the uncertainty surrounding the supply

of electricity and potential industrial action that saw our steel supply disrupted in 2014, the companies’ directors believe that this joint venture will ensure the survival and growth of the South African manufactured tailift,” says Warwick van Breda, managing director for Skyjacks Tailifts. “Our combined existing customer bases, as well as potential new customers, will benefit significantly from the pooled customer support that will provide both on- and off-site support for all brands of tailift. “We will also leverage off our combined dealer networks in southern Africa to enable us to move ahead with a strategy to

sell and service our locally produced products internationally.” van Breda adds that the JV will improve relations with the companies’ various suppliers by ensuring the consistency of large volume orders for supply to both organisations. This will enable both companies to plan manufacture and importation of speciality parts in a more systematic way that will greatly improve service levels. “We will proudly maintain ourselves as a South African manufacturer while the sales representatives of both entities will continue to call on and sell each company’s products as before,” concludes van Breda. Accredited to conduct warranty repairs on fuel injection systems

eef Fuel Injection Services has R been accredited by Bosch to conduct warranty repairs for its CP4 com-

mon rail direct fuel injection system, a standard feature on many of the latest passenger and light commercial vehicles. “This accreditation is a testament to our in-house expertise and the excellent quality of our workmanship, combined with the fact that we have made a significant investment in the latest technology and services,” Warren Hauser, operations manager at Reef Fuel Injection Services, says. The latest trend in direct fuel injection systems is higher injector pressures which improves atomisation

of the diesel, resulting in a more complete burn and hence less harmful emissions. The added benefit is improved fuel efficiency and less consumption. “These issues are very much in the spotlight at present, particularly in terms of rising fuel costs and increasingly stringent environmental regulations. However, the latest systems such as Bosch’s CP4 require specialised test equipment, which is where Reef Fuel Injection Services stands to play a major role,” Hauser says. The company has the capability to run up, test and report on Bosch’s CP4 system as well as to rebuild

and calibrate. “The diagnostic aspect is critical, especially the calibration. If the injector pressures are out of specification, it can result in substantial damage to an engine. Therefore the perceived cost savings of having such repairs done cheaply at a nonapproved repair facility are very short term,” Yorke Hauser says. Enquiry no: 37

Liquid–tight technology for subsea vehicles

E

lquip Solutions has made a name for itself as a quality provider of market-leading electrical components, tooling and machinery for a wide range of industries. In a bid to source the right product for a specific industrial requirement, the company has introduced a high-end, comprehensive range of flexible conduit systems and components from UK manufacturer Flexicon to the local market. These conduit systems provide superior cabling protection, particularly in high-demand, hazardous environments such as in the rail or mining industries. Further demonstrating its versatility, Flexicon’s liquid-tight conduit system has been used to protect the power supply to subsea remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) in the oil and gas industry in Brazil, China and Australia. The 63mm LTP conduit and special engineered fittings are used to protect the slipring connections inside the winch. This provides 3.3KV feeds to the power transmission system, which connects the subsea ROV to the surface, according to Mike Cronin, Managing Director of Elquip Solutions. “In addition to the power cables, fibre optic elements are included in the single cable connection system called an ‘umbilical’. The tail from the slip ring is a loose bundle of copper and fibre optic cables, which terminates in a junction box on the winch. This bundle needs

protecting from sea spray and harsh offshore environments to maximise its service life and provide trouble-free operation,” says Cronin. In the subsea environment it is essential that power is maintained for data to the ROV, because when the ROV is not working, it means the entire rig is down and not drilling. Providing ongoing protection for the slip ring from the environment is therefore vital. “Flexicon is specified in these situations because the liquid-tight LTP conduit has an exceptional bend radius which is necessary to fit inside the winch. It is also a proven system that can withstand an incredibly harsh environment and Flexicon engineers are able to provide special connectors to ensure an IP68 rating with different input and output sizes,” says Cronin. Flexicon conduits are known for their robustness in the harshest environments. Additional protection such as EMC shielding, high-impact or crush-resistance, corrosion and oil-resistance are also performance benefits, dependent on the conduit selected. Flexicon has developed two broad product ranges, metallic and non-metallic, available from 10mm to 106mm in diameter. The company also has a wide range of patented fittings and connectors, locking and non-locking, designed for ease of use and adaptable for Enquiry no: 40 any application.

Gas engine oils put waste gas to work R ecognising the new impetus on the use of waste gases as a source of energy, Engen Petroleum, is wowing front runners of this increasingly popular and environmentally clean technology with its comprehensive range of lubricating oils for engines running on waste gases - gases, which would otherwise contribute to global warming or unpleasant odours by being released into the atmosphere. According to Engen Lubricants business manager, John Kennedy, numerous waste gases are found in nature and as by-products of industrial processes, including natural gas, biogas (landfill and sewage gases), coal seam gas (coal mine and coal bed gases), and furnace gases (from steel, ferrochrome, ferromanganese and calcium carbide production plants). “Instead of being an environmental burden, these gases can run gas engines of various designs for specialist tasks including gas transmission, power generation, conversion into less harmful substances and many other applications,” says Kennedy. For example, methane produced by waste sites can be burnt in gas engines to generate power, while simultaneously being changed into carbon dioxide that is far less harmful for the environment. Other applications include converting sewage to methane for running engines; converting carbon monoxide produced by steel works

A

to carbon dioxide; and recovering gas from farm waste such as vegetation and refinery waste water. Kennedy says after all these wastes have been passed through a ‘digestion’ process to produce the gas used in gas engines, the other by-products are completely safe fertiliser and water that can be used for irrigation. The Engen range of premium quality gas engine oils (GEOs) has been formulated with the latest technology to meet the complex demands of gas engines and the fuels with which they operate,” says Kennedy. “Gas engines require lubricants formulated specifically for them, to meet the high demands

of gas engine designs, operating conditions and environmental factors,” he adds. Well-formulated gas engine oil takes into account the high ash content and composition; high resistance to nitration and oxidation and the fuel type as fuel gases differ in composition depending on their origin and can contain impurities which can harm engines. Gas engine oils need to be specially formulated to minimise wear and corrosion due to impurities in the fuel gas. Based on new detergent technology, an optimised anti-oxidant system and superior quality base oil, Engen’s premium-quality gas engine oils are ideally suited for use in three main applications. Engen GEO BL-40 is designed for use in landfill gas (LFG) and biogas (digester) applications. Featuring low ash content, this oil provides outstanding performance in modern higher BMEP engines, especially those prone to ash sensitivity and detonation, and has demonstrated extended drain capabilities when compared to competitor products. Engen GEO LL-40 is recommended for use in spark-ignited gas engines burning natural gas, Engen GEO LL-40 has been designed to meet the more stringent requirements of modern engines. Expect outstanding performance, wear protection and extended oil drain capability in the latest generation gas engines, both stoichiometric and lean-burn. Engen GEO N-40 has been designed to provide the highest levels of engine protection as well as optimised performance. “Engen has seen that this source of energy is becoming very popular, and we are proud to say we are ready to provide its unique lubrication oils requirements,” says Kennedy. Conference will address industry issues

frica’s petroleum and petrochemical industry faces many challenges, including climate change issues, fuel security and the falling oil price. These will be addressed at the upcoming Petro.t.ex Conference and Exhibition, a major mid- and downstream event focused on showcasing products, services and business opportunities across Sub-Saharan Africa. Petro.t.ex Africa is a component of the multi-sector South African Industry & Technology Fair, and takes place at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand from 20-22 May 2015. “The key focus of the conference are the updates for the liquid fuel and downstream industry,” says organiser Bette McNaughton. “It will also cover numerous current topics such as the overall status of the liquid fuel industry in South Africa, climate change, alternative fuels, and the revised BroadBased Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Codes for the retail fuel market.” About 95% of South Africa’s crude oil demand is met by imports from the Middle East and Africa. However, with estimated reserves of over nine billion

barrels of oil beneath South Africa’s coastlines, many drilling and business opportunities exist, which could also give the country some small measure of independence from imports. Avhapfani Tshifularo (pictured), Executive Director of the South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA), describes the current state of the oil industry as ‘resilient’, but with a constant need to adapt. He will deliver the opening keynote address on The Overall Status of the Liquid Fuel Industry in South Africa. “Oil is a strategic asset and key to South Africa’s growth; the rapid fall of the oil price – from over $100 to just over $50 per barrel – does affect the industry, but we need to be flexible to continue to function.” “The Petro.t.ex conference will play a major role in informing the industry about these changes and provide a vital platform for discussion,” says Tshifularo. Implications of the Revised BBBEE Codes for the retail market will be presented by Bakang Moeketsi, CEO of the South African Petroleum Retailers’

Association (SAPRA), Dr Rod Crompton from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) will discuss fuel security and the hi-jacking of tankers and the effects of the falling oil price on the economy will be discussed by Carmen Nel, an economist at Rand Merchant

Bank. Another important topic is alternative fuels, presented by Jason Gifford from the steering committee of the Southern African Biogas Industry Association. Other topics for discussion include: • Clean fuels and maximising sustainable development opportunities, presented by Professor Jim Petrie, Director of Energy and Green Economy from the Department of Economic Development and Tourism of the Western Cape Government • Climate Change presented by Deborah Ramalope, Chief Director: Climate Change Mitigation • The role of independent storage suppliers presented by Muziwandile Mseleku, CEO of Enquiry no: 43 Burgan

Reap market benefits, reduce capital costs C ompanies stand to reap definite market advantages from pump rental, while at the same time reducing their capital costs. However, this is still not a common practice in South Africa, unlike more mature markets such as Europe and the United States. “The local market is often unsure about relying on the equipment and services of a third party,” Lee Vine, General Manager of Integrated Pump Rental, a sister company to Integrated Pump Technology, says. “It is quite typical for South African companies to feel that owning their own pumps is the only route open to them. However, by aligning themselves with a knowledgeable and wellequipped rental company they will be able to

Environmentally friendly expanded metal products

A

s non-renewable resources are placed under ongoing strain, the emphasis on manufacturing environmentally-conscious products is escalating. Accountability for manufacturing processes and the end products will come increasingly under the spotlight. Andrew Mentis’ marketing manager, Elaine van Rooyen, explains that the company has carefully reviewed smarter ways of bringing its product range in line with green legislation. One of the company’s environmental champions is its range of expanded metal products. “Expanded metal finds favour for three reasons. Firstly, the manufacturing process is extremely economical. Secondly, the product itself is extremely hard wearing and durable, thereby resulting in increased longevity and less waste. Finally, expanded metal can be recycled at the end of its life,” says van Rooyen. She explains that expanded metal is produced by slitting and expanding a solid sheet of metal into a web of diamond-shaped meshes. The metal sheet can, in fact, be expanded up to ten times its original size, losing no material in the process and resulting in a remarkably light mesh. This raised mesh, which is known as Mentex can also be flattened into the same plane as the sheet of metal expanded and is known as Flatex . Because Andrew Mentis expanded metal products are made from a single sheet of high quality local mild steel or other ductile metal, there are no fretting strands, strained joints or welds, all of which can result in shortened lifespan. Expanded metal products have become increasingly popular in a number of industries including mining, construction, food and security. It is used for screens, grates, shelving, racks, protection guards, internal partitioning, burglar proofing, fencing, reinforcement, walkways, platforms and stairs, beds, garden furniture, braai grids, filters, dividers, scaffolding, truck bodies, tunnel and shaft linings, grain silos and even decoratively. Flexibility in the range of mesh sizes and thicknesses of both Mentex and Flatex allows customers to select the product that best suits their requirements. Andrew Mentis’ expanded metal can be bent, shaped to radii, angled or notched. There is an extensive select spectrum of mesh sizes. Enquiry no: 48

quickly realise that, in many instances, rental provides them with market advantages while simultaneously reducing capital expenses,” says Vine. It is for this reason that Integrated Pump Rental has been launched. Its rental fleet includes Grindex submersible drainage and dewatering pumps, diesel-driven pumps and accessories. In addition, value-add services such as dam cleaning and pontoons, pump flotation modules and pipe floats are available. All products used by Integrated Pump Rental are ISO 9001 certified. Full technical advice on the most suitable pump for specific applications is provided by its experienced team. Vine points out that, for smaller compa-

nies, owning their own pumps is really not an option. This factor excludes them from bidding for contracts which call for the use of pumps. Access to a reliable pump rental source could be the all-important differentiator when tenders are awarded. In another instance, contractors may be awarded an entire contract but are forced to sub-contract the pumping portion of the contract, thus diluting their possible profit margin. Two of the main advantages of renting, as opposed to buying pumps, are that they are not added to the company’s balance sheet and are fully deductible as a company expense. Cash flow is also not adversely affected by renting pumps as there is no large capital outlay. By entering into a rental agreement based on the projected time of rental, customers are able to ascertain upfront what their rental

17

costs will be. In addition, there is no depreciation of equipment, since the contractor simply returns the pump to the rental company after the pumping portion of the contract is completed. “Part of Integrated Pump Rental’s service level agreement (SLA) is the provision of a full maintenance service. This entails regular inspections of pumps before and during contracts to ensure that uptime is emphasised. Enquiry no: 47

New workshop facility

Plasma transferred arc welding

lasma Transferred Arc (PTA) welding and hardfacing process from thermal spray and surface engineering coating specialist, Thermaspray (Pty) Ltd , provides a versatile method of depositing high quality, metallurgically fused deposits on relatively low cost substrates. First introduced to the welding industry in 1964 as a method to bring better control to the arc welding processes in lower current ranges, the PTA process is complimentary to both thermal spray and conventional welding and is mainly used on components that are subjected to severe corrosion or abrasion, thermal shock, slurry erosion or extreme impact forces to give the necessary protection to the substrate by providing a coating that can withstand these conditions. PTA can be applied in practically every case where hardfacing is needed. According to Shaik Hoosain, Metallurgical Engineer at Thermaspray,

a wide variety of materials, ranging from soft to medium hardness (e.g. stainless steel) to very hard, wear resistant materials (e.g. carbide composites), can be deposited using the PTA process to achieve diverse surface properties such as mechanical strength, wear, corrosion and creep resistance. Bead thicknesses range from 1.2 to 2.5mm and multi-pass runs depend on the application. Hoosain explains that the plasma arc welding process uses a plasma to transfer an electric arc to the workpiece, a process which he says is similar to Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). “To create a plasma, a gas, typically argon, is heated to a sufficiently high temperature and ionized so that it becomes electrically conductive. “ “The plasma welding torch contains a non-consumable tungsten electrode (-) located within a copper nozzle (+) with a small opening at the tip,” con-

tinues Hoosain.” A pilot arc is struck between the torch electrode and the nozzle tip and the arc is transferred to the metal to be welded. By forcing the plasma gas and the arc through the constricted orifice, the torch delivers a high concentration of heat to a small area which leads to high quality welds. The deposit alloy powder is conveyed from a hopper to the torch by a carrier gas.” “PTA is a versatile, high temperature, wear and impact resistant welding process that is ideally suited to a wide range of applications, guaranteeing a high quality weld deposit with excellent reproducibility from batch to batch for severe impact, wear and corrosive environments.” He concludes. Flowmeter for low viscosity liquids obold Instrumentation, repK resented in South Africa by Instrotech – a Comtest Group

company, has on offer the compact Kobold Vortex flow meter Model DVZ, used for measuring and monitoring smaller and medium-sized flow of low viscosity, water-like liquids in pipes. The device works using the vortex principle, making it virtually maintenance-free. This involves the installation of a sharp-edged object (the vortex generator) in the flow duct. Vortices are created behind the object whose frequency is proportional to the velocity of flow of the

liquid. The flow volume can be determined with a high degree of accuracy by measuring the vortex frequency. The result is a very high linearity over the whole measuring range (0.5-4.5...10100l/min) with an accuracy of +2.5% of full scale. The device can be fitted with switching, frequency or analogue outputs. There is also an optional compact electronics package that includes a digital display, and both a switching and analogue output. Dosing and metering electronics are currently being developed. New defence against M marine cavitation

T

he development of epoxy coatings has advanced so far in recent years that industrial corrosion caused by strong chemicals at high temperatures is now effectively and routinely combated. Erosion and abrasion remain a challenge, but coatings have been developed to preserve the metal substrate while retarding the adverse effects of these conditions and completely preventing corrosion. Although the epoxy coating continues to erode, it is easier and cheaper to repair the eroded coating that it would be to replace eroded and corroded metal by welding. Specialist coatings company Belzona has now developed epoxy resins to resist the effects of marine cavitation as well as erosion, overcoming the unique challenge presented by the brittleness that is necessary for a coating to resist erosion, but which makes it susceptible to cavitation. Marine cavitation is found where rapid changes of pressure occur as water flows around a ship’s rudder, the vanes in its pumps, and its propulsion systems. Cavitation damage costs the marine industry

S

millions of dollars each year and must therefore be repaired or, better still, prevented. One option is to replace equipment damaged by cavitation, but this is expensive and does not solve the problem. A second option is to make repairs using the technique of overlay welding, filling the pitted area, then machining and polishing the substrate back to an almost new condition. This practice is common but does not solve the problem and thermal spraying is prone to similar disadvantages. The best way to protect a marine foil surface from the strong impacts of cavitation is to cushion the force with a corrosion resistant coating that will compress under impact before returning to its original state. Belzona’s elastomeric polymer coating 2141 has recently been developed to resist the effects of cavitation and impact, while simultaneously stopping corrosion. Its effectiveness has been independently verified by stringent testing that comprised a 500 hour erosion simulation during which the coated products were subjected to cavitation effects. By using a system where Belzona 1341 is a base layer and Belzona 2141 is a top coat, the benefits of both impact resistance and cavitation resistance are achieved. This combination also delivers complete corrosion resistance and improved efficiency. Both products can be applied either by hand or by spray, and cure in just a few hours. Application by spray achieves the usual advantages of a smoother finish and a faster rate of application on large areas. Enquiry no: 52

piroGrooving - an innovative method for seal ring grooves developed by Sandvik Coromant ensures high output of quality components and meets tough security demands. Used with the CoroBore XL system, it utilizes a spirograph tool path to create close-tolerance seal ring grooves in a very secure and productive way. Requiring close tolerances and high-quality surface finish, seal ring grooves are a critical feature on many oil and gas components. Conventional methods for machining seal ring grooves often result in slow production and poor process security. Multiple-operation approach incorporating both roughing and finishing sequences is another time thief. The tools that are being used are single point- or

plunging cutters that are prone to vibration. Adding to the challenges is the common use of difficultto-machine materials such as solid Inconel 718 and cladded Inconel 625. SpiroGrooving is a machining method used with the CoroBore XL system that utilises a spirograph tool path to create close-tolerance seal ring grooves in a very secure and productive way. This solution is ideal for making seal ring grooves in pre-clad machining of steel and stainless steel. The unique internal coolant feature of CoroBore

XL facilitates machining in advanced materials. Roughing and finishing are carried out in the same operation, which significantly reduces machining time and improves productivity. Altogether, this ensures high output of quality components and process security when machining seal ring grooves. SpiroGrooving uses a circular spirograph tool movement in a taper. This reduces chip thickness, enabling light cutting action and increased feed. Parts of the insert cutting edge have an interrupted cutting action, eliminating long chips tangling to the tool and spindle. Enquiry no: 54

KZN INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION PREVIEW

KZN Industrial Technology Exhibition 2015 Overview T his year will see the 16th instalment of the highly popular KwaZulu-Natal Industrial Technology Exhibition (KITE), which brings together the province’s leading industrial manufacturers and retailers in one arena. The industrial trade show, which runs at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 9 to 12 June, is a biennual event that provides local and international businesses with a platform to showcase their products and services while networking with industry peers. Established in 1984, KITE has become a key component in the industry’s exhibition calendar, which allows exhibitors the opportunity to engage directly with a serious buying audience, while visitors are exposed to the best industrial technologies on the market. “We expect this to be the biggest KITE since its inception,” said Managing Director for Specialised Exhibitions, Gary Corin. “In 2013 we saw more than 5 000 people coming through the doors, looking to learn about the latest trends in the technological world. Really no business can afford to miss out on such a unique opportunity for direct marketing.” In validation of KITE’s quality profile, the event has received the support of SAIMechE (The South African Institute of Mechanical Engineering) and the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, both of which have praised KITE for providing local businesses with innovative product solutions. And for the first time at KITE, the

University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will feature its revolutionary car of the future; Apalis. A product of the UKZN Solar Car Project, Apalis is one of the university’s first solar car designs that currently holds all the South African records for the Challenger Class. Visitors to this year’s KITE will be able to view the car and learn about the impressive engineering behind the solar vehicle. The event organisers are constantly looking for ways to enhance the KITE experience for visitors and the introduction of informative seminars in 2013 proved hugely successful. This year, visitors can look forward to a host of interesting talks by leaders in the industrial field, free of charge.

Topics will include “Trade and Investment Opportunities in KZN”, “Current and Future Trends in Automation” and “A Sustainable Road to Power Efficiency”, among others. KITE has also introduced the user-friendly mobile website which provides consumers – either visitors or exhibitors - with all the information they could possibly need about the four-day trade show. The KZN Industrial Technology Exhibition is, once again, expected to attract numerous high-profile visitors from across the industrial fields. The previous installment of KITE saw more than 5 000 visitors from South Africa’s industrial technology sector including senior decisionmakers, directors, managers, owners, contractors, engineers, regional government personnel, municipalities and planners. This year will showcase a range of industrial technologies including robotics, chemical and plastic technologies, electrical and electronic technologies, engineering supplies, information and communication technologies, logistics and supply chain management, mechanical and materials handling technologies, automation and electronics, safety, health and environmental technologies. apturing log entries electronically minimises shift handover risk, improves task management, and facilitates collaboration. Emerson Process Management’s Logbooks enables operators to electronically document activity records to streamline shift changes, drive operator action, and accelerate decisionmaking. A consistent approach to operator logs supports safety improvement efforts as well as audits and corrective action processes. Shift handover can be a risky time for a plant; poor communication can quickly result in process upsets. Logbooks deliver a shift change dashboard that includes a shift summary and detailed information on assigned tasks. Operators can identify priorities

for the new shift and access documentation of events from the previous shift, ensuring quality, safety, and throughput are protected. The consolidated graphical view makes it easy to provide complete, accurate information to customers and auditors. Automating task management ensures work is not overlooked or incomplete. With the ability to schedule tasks now, later, or on a recurring basis, management can be confident that critical tasks are prioritized and important – but non-urgent – tasks like training, reviews, and routine

maintenance are completed and documented. Tasks are visible on the shift dashboard, so operators can easily determine criticality and plan work. Information in paper logbooks is often hard to find. By moving to electronic logbooks, operators can establish an online knowledge base to speed up problem-solving and decision-making. Not only can operators search on text within the log entry, but they can also search on category, date/time span, related equipment, and a number of Enquiry no: 56 other attributes.

BBBEE deal with NEF produces retail star

E

ngen’s enterprise development partnership with the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) continues to yield great results as the company’s growing numbers of blackowned service stations thrive due to hard work, clever planning and unwavering support from the country’s leading fuel brand. “The Engen-NEF deal was signed in 2009 to provide affordable loans to black entrepreneurs, providing the necessary capital to purchase service stations,” says Tasneem SulaimanBray, GM of Engen Corporate Affairs. In an environment where access to participation in the Retail Fuels industry could require significant capital investment, the NEF deal seeks to provide support to these HDSA entrepreneurs who may be experiencing

F

financial barriers to entry into this market. “The aim is to grow Engen’s ratio of black-owned service stations, in support of the country’s BroadBased Black Economic Empowerment [BBBEE] Codes. Since then, we have attained 50% BBBEE ownership across our network of over 1 000 sites.” Engen believes business and financial support to deserving black entrepreneurs is the best way to increase equal participation in the mainstream economy. “It is our responsibility as a good corporate citizen to play a part in helping the country towards achieving a more integrated economy,” said Dumisani Bengu, Retail Business Manager. David Makwakwa has grown his service station investments from an

average, high-potential sites into a success stories that will inspire other emerging businessmen and women. David and Engen go back four years. In 2011 he took a seven-year loan with the NEF to buy Mohlakeng Convenience Centre in Randfontein – under caretakership at the time. During the subsequent years he grew the site’s volume throughput by 60%, and sensibly ploughed every bit of profit back into servicing the loan. As a result, he expects to pay it off in 2016 – a year ahead of term. David says that a starting volume potential of at least 300 kl per month is necessary to do viable business. “If I can grow it to 400 000 litres it’ll be a very good business,” he says. To do that, he has partnered with other businesses in the township to attract and retain customers, for example catering to funeral processions and rewarding the traffic department for its loyal business. As the only service station in the township, David has been fortunate in not having to share volumes with other businesses. With a background in retail (he has worked as a store manager at Woolworths and a regional manager at Shell), he understands the delicate balance between low margins and high volumes. “If the business in the area is not above 400 000 litres, you cannot share it,” he cautions. lapit is the first physical counter to connect with all major social media platforms. Inspired by the iconic 1960s split-flap design, Flapit is not only easy to use and fun to watch, but also a powerful, interactive marketing tool. Flapit was first released in London at the end of last year and became an instant success. From February this year, Flapit is available to the South African market. With nearly two thirds* of customers saying they are more likely to trust a business with a social media following over a business without one, Flapit allows brands to show off social metrics (such as likes, followers and check-ins) and encourage customer engagement, helping bridge the gap between online and offline environments. With six alpha-numeric splitflaps, Flapit can display metrics up to 999,999 alongside pre-installed logos for one of eleven leading online platforms. When not showing a logo, the counter can display metrics of up to 9,999,999. Flapit is designed for business and can be placed anywhere: in a store

window, on display at your agency, or on the wall of your restaurant or hotel. It’s easy to customise, allowing brands to experiment with Flapit as they see fit. For example, retailers could use the counter to display the price of a specific promotion or item, or advertise a discount if their followers reach a certain figure during the day. Similarly, a hotel reception might use it to display their Facebook star rating, but also occasionally show the time or a custom welcome message

HVDC converter station commissioned

BB, has successfully commissioned the refurbished Songo High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter station in Mozambique. The station is a key component in the 1,920 megawatt (MW) HVDC link transmitting electricity from the Cahora Bassa hydro-power plant in Mozambique across a distance of 1,417 kilometers to the South African grid. The HVDC link serves the power utilities Hidroeléctrica De Cahora Bassa (HCB) in Mozambique and Eskom in South Africa. The hydropower plant is located on the Zambezi River in northern Mozambique, a country with a wealth of natural resources and a growing economy. Mozambique has great

potential as an energy exporter with around 12 gigawatts (GW) of hydro capacity that could be developed and the Cahora Bassa plant is already one of the largest generation facilities in the South African power pool. South Africa, where coal-based thermal power is the main source of electricity, has a significant demandsupply gap, so the approximately 2 gigawatts of power supplied from their neighbor to the northeast is critical. For Mozambique, the energy exports represent an important source of income. ABB replaced the existing equipment with new DC converter transformers, smoothing reactors, arresters and measuring equipment. The installation houses the first re-con-

nectable converter transformers to go into operation worldwide. They allow the system to operate at different voltage levels, between 533 and 600 kilovolts (kV), allowing for any future upgrade. ABB previously upgraded the Apollo converter station, at the South African end of the HVDC link, in 2008. “We are pleased that our innovative HVDC solution will bring clean renewable energy from Mozambique to the people of South Africa in a reliable and efficient manner” said Patrick Fragman, head of ABB’s Grid Systems business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. “This refurbishment boosts power availability and strengthens the transmission infrastructure in the region.” ABB pioneered HVDC transmission technology over 60 years ago

and has built a vast global installed base, having completed about 100 HVDC projects around the world, representing a total installed capacity of more than 120,000 megawatts and accounting for about half of the global installed base. ABB remains

at the forefront of HVDC innovation and is uniquely positioned in the industry with in-house manufacturing capabilities for all key components of HVDC systems, including power semiconductors, converters and high Enquiry no: 61 voltage cables.

ropout, new in this country and available from General Pneumatics Natal, will change the way compressed air is filtered forever. According to Durban Branch Manager, Johan Grobler, Dropout has multiple applications acting not only as a stand-alone water separator or coalescing filter but also providing protection upstream of refrigerant dryers by ( pre ) filtering bulk liquid and other contaminants. Unlike traditional cyclonic separators which rely on constant and stable flows and fail miserably during stop/start processes, Dropout has the ability to maintain its performance levels during start up and reaches optimum performance in a fraction of

a second. W h a t makes this product so different from other compressed air filters is the fact that it is maintenance free and requires no replacement parts, hence no consumables. The Dropout offers an all in one solution, suitable for scalable flow rates and requires no outside power source, which significantly lower life cycle costs. It also has a 5 year war-

Director of Vital Engineering, manufacturer of a broad range of floor gratings, stair treads and safety hand rails, is passionate about educating the market about safety on site in relation to the design and installation of floor gratings. The company is the first South African gratings, hand railing and expanded metal manufacturer to obtain an international ISO 9001

design accreditation, and to have held this certification for over 19 years. “In our experience, the safety of the human asset is unfortunately sometimes the last consideration when purchasing floor gratings. The choice of material that people have to walk on should not be driven by cost, but by many other factors, above all safety. There is not enough knowledge in the market surrounding the importance of gratings,” Pringle maintains. Vital Engineering has decided to step into the breach and provide practical advice to industry on the critical issues of safety, quality and design specifications when it comes to the choice of gratings customers should make. One of the initiatives that the company has taken in creating safety awareness is to distribute a CD to customers detailing the correct gratings installation and performance specifications. The CD provides installation guidelines for the customer, and has been used in the construction site context for induction purposes. “For example, there needs to be some education to prepare the market for the transition between steel and fibreglass products, and that it is a design issue. These products are not able to take the same load, but then again, each has their own advantages.” says Pringle. “The risk involved with purchasing gratings according to the lowest price lies in quality and safety specifications not being adhered to,” he emphasises, adding that this can result in other related costs such as Enquiry no: 63 injury on site and downtime.

Door-to-door LPG domestic delivery pilot

hen the lights are out and appliances are down as a result of load shedding, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) serves as the ideal source of energy for lighting, cooking and heating. Domestic consumers now have even quicker access to LPG, as Afrox makes its Handigas LPG range available for door-to-door delivery. Afrox has supplied its tried-andtrusted Handigas LPG range to domestic consumers via retail outlets and other indirect channels for years. The company recently identified the need to add greater value to this large customer base by launching a pilot programme on the West Rand of Gauteng, whereby residential users can order the product online or place orders via the Afrox call centre

and effect payment on delivery via credit or debit card payment, with next day delivery. The ‘Handigas Express Doorto-Door Delivery’ pilot programme was being launched midApril 2015 in order to fill a gap in the market by creating a direct link between Afrox and its residential customer base. “The success of our eShop enables us to facilitate this new initiative, which allows consumers to place online orders at any time during the day or night, in the comfort of their own home. With winter approaching and power supply remaining vulnerable,

the process of order, payment and delivery can be completed within 24 hours, thereby ensuring minimal disruptions at home,” says Afrox business development manager for LPG Gerhard van Wyk. In addition to providing greater convenience to its customer base, a doorto-door domestic delivery service also ensures greater safety, as a secure payment on delivery via

credit or debit card means that all personal details of the client, including physical address and credit card details, are safeguarded. “Our customers are provided with the peace-of-mind that the cylinder has been filled according to the highest levels of safety, as guaranteed by our distinctive red seal on all Afrox Handigas cylinders,” he continues. In the event of an unforeseen delay, van Wyk points out that customers will have access to a dedicated customer support team, both online and telephonically. “To overcome any challenges, service agents will be in regular communication with customers.” The door-to-door delivery initiative is first being launched on a pilot basis to address any unplanned shortcom-

elukabel, have once again shown their commitment to green energy with the introduction of a complete range of green energy cables. Helukabel’s Green Line range for photovoltaic applications and Heluwind aluminium wind energy cables compliment the company’s already well established range of purpose designed renewable energy cabling solutions. More than merely being suitable, the Helukabel range is actually designed and engineered to overcome challenges associated with this type of application. The Heluwind WK Powerline Aluminium, for example, is a new generation power cable built to reduce the overall cost of installations due to its light weight which paves the way for less supporting infrastructure

overhead as well as reducing the initial purchase price. In addition the aluminium cable does not have an aftermarket value in scrap which reduces the chances of theft in the typically remote areas where the plants are situated. With a fixed installation temp range of -40°C to +105°C and able to handle voltages 0.6-3kV and test voltage of 50Hz 2500V or 9kV the cables are able to deal with nearly any application. The cable is also treated to be UV, heat and oil resistant and can be buried direct in the soil if required, while also being fully recyclable at the end of its lifespan. “Perhaps the most important feature of the cable is its flexibility and light weight which makes it easy to work with on site. This cable is also available in Halogen free

versions (LSZH). With flexibility that allows it to take sharp turns the cable can be run in comparatively more compact environments and its resistance to chemicals, flames and other environmental factors means that it can be used trouble-free in harsh outdoor environments,” says Doug Gunnewegh, managing director of Helukabel South Africa. Similarly, the range of Green Line Solarflex cables are purpose designed for photovoltaic applications from the photo cell to the grid. A broad range of cabling is available in similarly heat, chemical and environmental resistant application for power transmission, plant cabling and even data monitoring of the plant.

Reliable, flexible and precise pressure control valves

EMÜ pressure control valves are manuG factured from plastic, require little maintenance and allow flexibility of use, while

providing optimal pressures in the most varied of process plants. Pressure control valves control the upper pressure limits, lower the pressure or balance out pressure fluctuations. Three versions are available depending on the operation required. The valves can be obtained in the nominal sizes of DN 10 to DN 100. The desired pressures can be conveniently adjusted according to requirements using a set screw. Excellent flow rate values are guaranteed by the flow-efficient design of the valve bodies, which have minimal deadleg. The pressure control valves can be installed regardless of position and no auxiliary power is required for operating the equipment. Hermetic separation of the actuator from the medium ensures

long service life and operational safety. All media wetted parts are manufactured from high-grade plastic and can withstand even corrosive media. Enquiry no: 66

New metered, switched and managed rack power distribution units

ower management company Eaton has added new Metered Outlet, Switched and Managed models to its award-winning range of rack power distribution units (PDUs) available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). As well as reliable and flexible power distribution, the latest models include new features that provide greater control at equipment level, enabling IT professionals to accurately monitor and control the power consumption of their IT equipment. “These new models are the latest additions to our third generation of rack-based power distribution units, also known as enclosure power distribution units or ePDUs,” said Stefan Coote, product manager, Eaton EMEA. “They offer customers the ability to optimise power usage, control

costs and save time more effectively than ever before.” As well as metering and switching of individual outlets, users can now group outlets together by pieces of IT equipment so that they can meter

and switch equipment with multiple inputs over A and B feeds. This means they can get a clearer view of the power usage of their equipment together with the capacity available within their data centre and can save time by controlling certain operations, such as remote re-booting and scheduled shutdowns, more easily. Eaton’s new Metered Outlet ePDUs allow energy usage of IT equipment to be monitored locally and remotely, making it easier to determine where energy savings can be made. In addi-

tion, since the meters are of billing grade accuracy, the readings can be used by in-house data centre operators to apportion costs between company departments and by co-location data centre operators to charge customers for energy usage. The new Switched ePDUs incorporate metering and also allow power to individual servers to be turned on and off remotely. This is an important aid to efficiency, as servers that are not currently needed can easily be turned off, and non-essential equipment can be scheduled to shut down at times when it is not needed. The new Managed ePDUs offer a combination of the Metered Outlet and Switched facilities. They provide independent power metering and switching for each individual output or piece of IT equipment. Detailed information about power usage is a valuable tool for increasing efficiency, and for reducing downtime, as it aids rapid Enquiry no: 67 fault location.

Konecranes CXT cranes are indispensable in an assembly workshop or industrial plant. With the latest technology for improved

load accuracy, versatility, and ease of use, the CXT crane is the industry leader in medium-heavy indoor cranes. Production facilities have many critical operations that need to be under constant control to be successful: materials coming in, parts being moved around, and finished products going out. One of those operations is, for example, material handling with cranes. Cranes and employees make up a combination that must operate as smoothly, as safely, and as fast as possible. Based on extensive experience, and backed by a thorough understanding of a customer’s processes, Konecranes developed Smart Features: softwarebased intelligence that saves time and increases the productivity and safety of the crane in the specified application. Depending on the customer needs, CXT cranes can be equipped with standard features and with Smart Features. With the Smart Features developed by Konecranes, the work cycle is substantially shorter. An experienced operator can operate any crane fast, and almost anybody can operate an intelligent crane fast and precisely. The intelligent assisting features help to make almost anyone a good crane Enquiry no: 68 operator.

Exports buoy local pump manufacturer

E

xports of highly advanced pumps for the petrochemical and hazardous materials industries has buoyed local manufacturer KSB Pumps and Valves in the face of somewhat suppressed sales in traditional southern African markets. With the local economy feeling the pinch of unstable world markets made worse by mining industry strikes and lower commodity prices, the growing export order book for locally developed and manufactured magnetic drive pumps is a welcome boost for the local manufacturing industry. The advanced home-grown hermetically sealed RPHmdp API685 magnetic-drive pumps were originally developed for Sasol Secunda

more than a decade ago to simplify the operation and maintenance of the company’s many pumps in hazardous environments. With a solid track record at Sasol, other hazardous materials plants around the world are currently scrambling to switch to KSB’s RPHmdp “API682 Plan 53” that completely excludes materials being pumped from the drive-end and making for a safer less complex pump environment. According to KSB Pumps and Valves Product manager for API and multi-stage pumps, Jan van Vuuren, the success of the new type of pump is its intrinsic safety and comparatively more simple construction and setup. The old Plan 53-type pumps require addi-

tional hydraulic systems and pipes etc to be installed in order to seal the fluid line and prevent leaks; whereas RPHmdp pumps are standalone and do not require any other sealing systems. This has led to companies like PCK Schwedt Refinery (one of the biggest key supply refineries in the world), Petrobras refinery in Brazil, Ancap refinery in Uruguay and chemical plant BASF Lemongras in Malaysia placing orders for the KSB pumps. “Many more enquiries are currently being handled and looking at the amount of interest this year and the amount of quotes that we are working-on, it is safe to say that we will be exporting many more pumps in future. “Our magnetic drive pumps

are being recognised and are in demand in flammable, aggressive chemical and explosive industries. Tightening legislation in Europe and the rest of the world has also become far stricter and our solution makes it easier to comply with legislation. “So far there are quotes for more than 100 pumps in industries working with anything from hot oils to propane, liquid gas, petroleum and by products as well as refining chemicals etc.” “We are also receiving enquiries about our pumps from companies handling Avgas, Ethanol and any number of other dangerous, toxic, flammable or hazardous materials,” says Jan. Drip and contamination free sampling

egular sampling is essential for controlling production processes in the manufacturing process. Since the samples have to be taken directly from the production flow, it often means disturbing a usually closed system. Contamination of the production facility or accidental release of toxic or corrosive material into the atmosphere thus present a potential hazard. On the other hand, there are also dangers for the operators from both high or low process temperatures and machine pressure. Therefore, it is preferable to eliminate the potential for both operator error and incorrect switching during the design stage. There need to be as many options as there are production sites as some will only need a standard gate valve with an off-the-shelf bucket to take a sample whereas other sites require heatable high pressure valves with flushing and safety devices. It’s time to change the way of registering your visitors, cleaners, contractors or anyone who enters your premises. Taggit has a new and exciting product that is setting the standard for Visitor Registration using an iPad and the Cloud. This customisable App gives you all the information you require and more to ensure accurate and efficient management of your visitors. embedded rail; and a mobile base. The mobile base does not feature any mechanical fastening to the floor, but is rather kept in place through the weight of the shelving system installed upon it. This option is thus ideal for less permanent applications. The cataphoretic coatings applied to the Movibloc shelving uprights also distinguish the APC product from its competitors, and provide a maximum degree of resistance to corrosive environmental forces for a rated period of over 50

Using sampling valves and systems based on a plug valve construction sample this sampling process becomes safer and more precise. The valves offer the same advantages as the plug valve principle. These valves are free of cavities as a standard because a PTFE sleeve encircles the whole plug, preventing trapped residue which ensures no contamination of the sample. Media likely to crystallize does not affect operation either. Furthermore, this allows for the use of piggable valves. The compact nature of the this construction allows for great space saving, even allowing for vertical or horizontal mounting. SA engineer selected for finals of first Africa Prize

our of Africa’s most promising inventions have made it to the finals of the first Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. These inventions include software from Kenya which allows users to swap airtime between carriers or for cash. A fence-mounted warning system from South Africa prevents stock theft and poaching. A Tanzanian innovator designs bespoke Nanofilters for communities

to get cheap, clean drinking water, and a precision fertiliser applicator from Zambia helps small-scale farmers work faster and more efficiently. Following an open, competitive, application process which saw entries from 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, 12 African entrepreneurs were chosen to receive a package of six months of business training and mentoring from the Academy. The four finalists showing the great-

est promise have now been chosen, and are in with a chance to become the overall winner. One of these four engineering innovations from sub-Saharan Africa will win £25,000 when the first Africa Prize winner is announced in Cape Town on 1 June, with £10,000 for each runner-up. All four finalists must present their innovations to judges at the ceremony before a winner is selected.

Precise fence security alarm system

H

ours after visiting a farmer friend in South Africa, 43-year-old electronic engineer Ernst Pretorius (pictured) had finished his first design of the Fencesitter. Years later, his innovation has been patented and he is a finalist in the inaugural Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Mounted to the wiring posts of a fence, a Draadsitter – which means ‘fence sitter’ in Afrikaans – detects tampering on fences up to 800 metres long. Electric fences are expensive in maintenance and construction, but Draadsitter is both affordable and reliable. Fences can’t be tampered with, fence posts taken down, or Draadsitter devices moved without raising the alarm. Up to 9999 units can be connected in a network, and a thermometer warns of fires. “There’s a big need for the device in combating rhino poaching,” says Pretorius, “and protecting wildlife and the livestock of small farmers.” After six months of training through the Africa Prize mentoring programme, Pretorius says that he’s had to rethink many naïve misconceptions, and grow both his business plan and the actual innovation. “Not only have we combined all the functions into a single, repackaged aluminium unit, but the Africa Prize process made me think to add functions I had never even thought of,” he says. “I will always be grateful to the Academy for the knowledge I have gained through the Africa Prize.” The Draadsitter works off batteries that

last up to three years. It isn’t affected by harsh weather or set-off by the sound or flash of thunder and lightning, and has now been tested on fences with up to 22 rows of wiring. Over the last six months, Pretorius’ innovation has attracted interest from game famers, conservationists and companies across Africa.

The product is now in pre-production phase, and should begin rolling out by mid-2015. As for commercial viability, Pretorius is excited, but has learnt from his mentors to be careful. “The importance of a wellplanned business model was a big lesson, as well as the risks of getting investors involved from very early on. I’ve learnt invaluable tools with which to grow my business, to reach as many people as possible. From here, we’re only going to grow stronger.”

Call for aggregate standardisation

ggregate grading specifications are being reviewed by representative bodies in order to move the construction industry in Southern Africa towards tighter specifications that can be uniformly adopted by all sectors. At the helm of the review process is the Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa (Aspasa) which is seeking a common grading system to be used across the board when ordering or specifying aggregates for any purposes. At present buyers can quote either SANS, or the dated TMH or other specifications when ordering materials leading to some confusion among suppliers and users alike.

“We have been approached by the country’s major users of aggregates including roads agencies, metropolitan and smaller municipalities, as well as major consulting engineering firms to move the industry towards a common standard. Aggregates make up by far the largest component of materials used (by volume) for any standard-type of construction project. It is used to make concrete, build paved roads and to stabiles ground etc. “But different professions have adopted their own standards and this leads to problems wherever projects overlap or where responsibility for projects is shared among companies who use different standards. “ “In other instances it may dis-

advantage suppliers who produce products in accordance with opposing standards and have equipment geared to producing aggregate products to these standards. In the past aggregate suppliers have supplied aggregates to a certain specification yet their products have been rejected at great cost and we want to avoid this where possible,” says Nico Pienaar, director of Aspasa. Speaking at a specially convened workshop of Aspasa, civil engineer Jacques Smith of GoConsult says that formalization is required and that appropriate tests and training needs to be developed to ensure these can be accepted and implemented across the board. “Sampling methods need to be agreed upon and best practice should dictate that all sampling be done in collaboration between the supplier and parties responsible for specifying the materials. With the right processes and procedures in

G

place it becomes easier to comply with clients requirements and also to keep record of what was supplied.” Pienaar says laboratories will also have a role to play and will need to work according to strict criteria laid out in the specifications to test materials. The adoption of uniform standards is the only surefire way of ensuring consistent quality of materials are produced to meet increasingly stringent requirements for building materials. The association is there-

fore investigating the use of a neutral professional laboratory that will be used in the event of disputes arising to ensure fairness. “We therefore urge all professional bodies in all industries including consulting engineers, civil engineering contractors, civil engineers, architects and specifiers to make their voices heard and to support Aspasa in its attempts to bring about constant improvement in the supply of aggreEnquiry no: 79 gates,” he concludes.

oscor Hi-Reach, the official distributor of Genie’s extensive and well-known range of equipment in Southern Africa, rises to new heights with the launch of four new Genie lifting options. “Customers are spoilt for choice with this line-up of two articulated boom lifts and two scissor lifts. With distinctive features that meet a variety of indoor and outdoor lifting applications, these machines are a game changer, particularly for the construction industry.” Says George Landsberg, Managing Director of Goscor Hi-Reach. “The GS-4069 Series is undoubtedly one of the most exciting of the new machines,” continues Landsberg. “Whilst not entirely new, with battery operated and rough terrain units introduced to the market approximately two years ago, this latest development from Genie delivers all the benefits of hybrid technology in a unique bi-energy version.” Equally at home indoors and outdoors, the Genie GS-4069 BE is the textbook first-on-site-last-off-site solution for the construction industry. Under diesel power the Genie GS-4069 will go about its duties during ground-breaking and structural work. Once the building is enclosed,

a simple flick of the switch to battery power and the machine is ready to perform its indoor duties ensuring a safe, comfortable, no-noise, emission-free working environment. Landsberg points out that the extreme flexibility of this two-in-one unit makes it a highly convenient and affordable rental option as both outdoor and indoor duties can be performed by one machine. The working height of just under 14m of the battery operated GS-4047, the next offering in Goscor Hi-Reach’s new products, makes it unique

amongst scissor lifts. Produced in the UK, the unit weighs just over 3 tons and has a lifting capacity of 350kg in the basket. According to Landsberg, the GS-4047 has been available to the local market for some 18 months but the latest offering is designed to USA ANSI specifications. Goscor Hi-Reach’s two new articulated boom lift offerings from Genie include the rough terrain diesel driven Z-62/40 and the light-weight battery operated Z-33/18. The improved design of the diesel machine which replaces the previous generation Z-60/34, provides better accessibility. The working height has been extended by an additional 70cm to 20.87m while the outreach has been substantially improved by an additional 2m to a maximum of 12.47m. With the added benefits of zero tail swing for easy manoeuvrability in confined spaces and 4-wheel drive for easy negotiation of rough uneven terrain, the Z-62/40 will improve productivity by getting the job done quickly, safely and effectively, making it the perfect lifting solution on construction sites. Preventing soil erosion after pipeline construction

D

uring design of the Western Aqueduct project in the Durban area, Naidu Consulting approached Kaytech regarding soil erosion protection for the many steep gradients and delicate grasslands through which Phase Two of the pipeline would traverse. Once complete, this hilly 7km section will run from Alverstone Nek Reservoir to Ashley Road in Hillcrest. Environmentally-friendly SoilSaver was indisputably specified as the ideal solution to this challenging project. Manufactured by Kaytech from a biodegradable 100% jute yarn woven to form a 65% open mesh structure,

SoilSaver not only effectively combats soil erosion by trapping surface soil particles, but also conserves moisture and helps to prevent wind erosion. The open structure provides space for plant propagation and growth. According to strict environmental legislation, areas vulnerable to soil erosion must be rehabilitated to their former states once construction had taken place. Having extensive experience with the installation of SoilSaver, Rietvlei Landscape was awarded the contract and, since commencement of the project in October 2013 to date, the company has installed 38 000m²

of SoilSaver. Without the protection of SoilSaver on these steep gradients, the increase in overall kinetic energy of the surface water run-off, especially during heavy precipitation, would quickly lead to severe erosion. Simple to install, SoilSaver is pegged down in close contact with topsoil, thereby creating a more torturous path for surface water run-off. Within approximately two years, during which time vegetation would be re-established, SoilSaver will undergo biodegradation and breakdown. Unlike many other natural materials that draw on the soil’s valuable nitrogenous reserves during decomposition, the fibrous residue from SoilSaver actually adds nutrients to the topsoil. SoilSaver is an economical, highly versatile product that is suitable for use in numerous applications in any climatic conditions. It is supplied in highly compressed bales comprising about twelve 84 m² laps each of which can easily be carried up a slope by one person. The installation of SoilSaver has been problem-free and grass is already flourishing in some of the Enquiry no: 82 rehabilitated areas.

AB KickStart, the South African Breweries’ (SAB) youth entrepreneurship programme, announced the competition’s Top 18 national finalists for 2015, during a grant allocation ceremony at SAB’s World of Beer recently. Each of the finalists has begun an intensive business development support programme, which will culminate in an award ceremony to celebrate the top 5 entrepreneurs amongst them at the end of this year during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2015 (GEW), where they stand to win additional grant funding of between R100 000 and R500 000. SAB is encouraged by the fact that young entrepreneurs are taking advantage of the opportunities that lie within South Africa’s core industries, namely Agriculture,

Health, Energy and Sustainability, with a vast majority of the 2015 finalists’ businesses playing in these arenas. A business development strategy has been crafted for each of the finalist businesses according to a needs-analysis undertaken at the beginning of 2015. This determines the grant funding received by each and the necessary business development support, including individual mentoring over the coming months. 2015 is a significant year for SAB and SAB KickStart. SAB celebrates 120 years of brewing some of the country’s best loved beers, as well as 20 years of SAB KickStart, which has proved to be one of the more respected youth entrepreneurship development programmes in South Africa since its start in May 1995. Changing of the guard

im Guild, Executive Director of the SAIW since December 2000, has retired and long-serving SAIW Operations Manager, Sean Blake, has been appointed SAIW Executive Director as of April 2015. Guild says that his tenure at the Institute can be described as “steady progress”. The fact, however, is that it is more apt to describe Jim’s achievements as massive. When he started at the end of 2000 the SAIW was really a very small organisation with no international recognition of its courses, it was struggling financially and was fully reliant on sponsorship for its income. In short, it was hardly a going concern.

Today it is the leading welding training organisation on the continent and is self-sufficient. Its courses are recognised internationally; it has more than doubled its training population and has earned the respect of the global welding community. The achievements were astounding and too many to mention here, but some of the highlights were: • 2001: SAIW became a Regional Designated Centre (RDC) of the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA). • 2003: SAIW became and Authorised National Body (ANB)

of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) able to offer all IIW training courses and issue qualification diplomas. • 2005: Established the Young Welder of the Year competition. This biennial event has become the premier welding competition in South Africa attracting young welders from all over the country. • 2006: Established permanent representation in Cape Town and Durban and in 2013 established a fully-fledged training facility in Cape Town with a similar facility in Durban imminent. • 2006 and 2012: SAIW hosted the IIW Regional Congress hosting speakers and experts from all

These torsional flexible couplings are equipped with specially designed elastic elements which work in compression, allowing for maximum torque transfer, heat dissipation and product longevity. This series is designed for applications that include low speed shafts of machinery driven by electric motors - even in harsh environments - and

is available with customisable options to meet the requirements of restricted applications. These compact couplings allow for compensating axial, radial and angular misalignments and also protect the drivetrain from shock loads. The modular design enables the integration of brake discs, pulleys, shear devices and spacer shafts within the coupling. Radial removability of the coupling elements is possible, without having to move the connected machinery. Vulkan has followed its technology trends for VFD (variable frequency drives) and VSD (variable speed drives) with the design of its coupling range, which now includes Flexomax GSN and GSND couplings. These backlash free couplings, which have been specifically designed for VFD high speed input shafts, offer multiple configurations to ensure coupling types meet all requirements. Enquiry no: 86

mproving margins and boosting production gains, Caterpillar’s new Performance Series bucket range features advanced designs that take full advantage of machine power and linkages to boost payloads, with more efficient digging contributing to lower diesel burn rates. Materials handling, general purpose and rock buckets are all available in heavy duty specification. A standard equipped spill guard prevents possible spillage over the linkage. Additionally, Caterpillar also offers a wide range of special application Performance Series buckets. Examples included coal, slag, skeleton (for separating rocks from sand and for applications where medium breakout forces are required), woodchip, high dump, and serrated edge (for loading rocky material into stationary crushers). Factors to consider in choosing the right bucket are the operational role (digging or re-handling), the material fragmentation type (bank, shot/broken, crushed/piled, or loose), the material (e.g. bank gravel, granite or sand), and the level of impact and abrasion (low to moderate, moderate to high, or low). “To ensure optimum performance, always match the bucket to the machine based on material density and wheel loader size,” explains Barloworld Equipment group product specialist, Deon Delport. (Barloworld Equipment is the Cat dealer for southern Africa.) Materials handling buckets incorporate a flat floor design and are intended for loose material re-handling, making them well-suited for a variety of stockpile loading applications. These buckets provide maximum material retention and can be equipped with bolt-on adapters and segments, or bolt-on-cutting edges with corner guard for versatility and longer life.

General purpose buckets incorporate a wedge floor design and are built with a shell tine construction to increase strength and rigidity in their typical excavation and bank applications. Their structure efficiently transmits cutting edge loads back to the lift arms, shielding the bucket shell from distortion and keeping it up, out of the dirt. These buckets are designed to accept the standard Cat bolt-on edge with corner guard or tooth group with bolt-on segments. For high abrasion aggregate applications, heavy duty general purpose buckets are the perfect choice. Specifically designed for quarry, aggregates and mining operations in high impact and/or high abrasion applications, these buckets are factory modified with additional protection. “Each protection item and component was carefully chosen in response to customer requests for a bucket that delivers maximum strength, durability and wear life,” expands Delport, adding that heavy duty rock buckets feature larger GET and additional wear mateEnquiry no: 93 rial for the toughest tasks.

ac Systems has implemented the McMethod.net project and portfolio automation solution, developed in conjunction with McManus Consulting, at a South African public sector investment entity to assist it in the establishment of a project management function. The entity required a solution that would help IT, evolve its technology to be more innovative and deliver additional business value to the organisation. But with no project management office in place, the new system needed to provide a platform for it to deliver on projects and get its employees involved in this business-critical function. “For the client, IT needed to be more than just a cost centre and had to deliver a support function. In essence, it had to become a strategic asset. Project management therefore had a big role to play in this. Following an extensive tender process, Dac Systems was selected because the McMethod.net solution was not only price sensitive but also promised the level of innovation required. Furthermore, it is built on top of the Microsoft Project Server and Nintex Workflow products,” says Aldo van Tonder, chief marketing officer at Dac Systems.

McMethod.net provides a turn-key project management methodology management solution and easy to follow best practices. In addition, it provided the client with the ability to define its own processes with project managers having a clear understanding of what each element or action requires. “DAC had to work under very tight deadlines with the project managers keen to get started. The team provided us with a very configurable solution that enabled us to reduce our infrastructure footprint significantly while the implementation was going on,” says a senior spokesperson for the organisation. As McMethod.net fulfilled such an integral role for the client, it was vital to ensure employees were trained and had the comfort levels necessary with the new system. “DAC provided us with the assistance we needed to get everything up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible. Whenever we had a challenge, Dac Systems helped us to assess the problem and helped us move forward on the implementation,” says the spokesperson.

hether quark, fresh cheese or skimmed milk yoghurt, whether Greek yoghurt or double cream cheese – the demand on the global milk market is multifaceted. Yoghurt stands out here in particular for its unparalleled diversity and consumption is increasing not only in “emerging markets” such as Brazil and China but also in the more saturated European markets – an opportunity for producers to position new varieties on the market. GEA has developed specific production processes for individual products, for example the Greek yoghurt sector. Success is based firstly on the exceptional product quality: the full-bodied and creamy Greek yoghurt consists of only two components – milk and lactic acid bacteria – which give rise to its primitive and natural character. In the traditional way, 3 litres of coagulated milk were drained through a cloth bag of whey to ultimately gain around 1 litre of yoghurt. Today, whey is separated continuously from the coagulated mass using the same proportion of 3 to 1 and with the aid of GEA centrifuges at 10 000 times the force of gravity, in order to obtain the desired protein-rich Greek yoghurt – with quality and flavour that is in no way inferior to the original in its full-bodied creaminess. Alternative processes to centrifugal methods are, for example, the use of filters or the addition of stabilisers and powder to the traditionally produced yoghurt. However, only “me-too products” are produced in this way, which fail to achieve the creamy consistency and flavour of the original. As well as achieving the unparalleled flavour of the original with mechanical separation technology, the GEA centrifuges offer other

SA Africa’s portable Modulair Airline Reel and Trolley System has been launched, and is ready to take a load off in your workplace. Its portable design makes compressed airline breathing systems easier to transport and store, making them more convenient to use. Companies that may have potentially dangerous gases, vapors, particles or an oxygen deficiency in the work place, require a suitable compressor or plant compressed air to provide a clean and safe supply of oxygen for their employees. Generally compressor take-off points are located in fixed positions around the workplace and are not always suitably accessible. Lengthy hoses are not always easily transportable due to their weight and also pose a challenge with regards to safe and neat storage. PSA Africa recognized the need for

Largest crane fleet in SA

J

ohnson Crane Hire has bolstered its crane fleet in terms of its heavy lift capability on both the crawler and hydraulic side. It now owns and operates the largest crane fleet in South Africa, with a total of 270 cranes, having completed a four-year fleet replacement programme in 2014 at a total investment of R600 million. “We have added some major equipment into the top end of the fleet, with a strong focus on keeping our fleet modern and up-to-date. This is to ensure we can meet the growing demand of our core client base and to support our philosophy of providing new and reliable equipment,” Peter Yaman, Executive, Johnson Crane Hire, says. Established in 1976 as a crane hire company, Johnson Crane Hire is now firmly established as a total lifting services provider. “We can supply a full scope of project services, from crawler and hydraulic cranes to ancillary services,” Yaman says. “We are not only a

crane company; we are a projects company.” “We are up there with the major players in terms of equipment and engineering and services,” Cornelis Grotius, General Manager: Heavy Lift Division, says. “The fact that we are a South African company, operating alongside

major multinationals in this highly competitive market, is a testament to our home-grown success story.” Another key factor is that the Heavy Lift Division operates across a range of sectors, with Johnson Crane Hire’s latest highly successful diversification being into the windenergy sector. “We spread our risk over different sectors, meaning we are not wholly reliant on construction, mining or heavy industry,” Grotius says. Johnson Crane Hire’s heavy-lift crane fleet consists of some of the largest cranes available in the South African market. These range from lattice boom crawler cranes (200 t to 750 t) to a 750 t lattice boom truck-mounted crane specifically for the wind-energy industry and hydraulic boom crawler cranes (100 t to 220 t). In terms of a total package, Johnson Crane Hire is able to offer upfront engineering, project management, heavy transport and heavy Enquiry no: 99 rigging services.

Lubrication and maintenance key

A

ccording to Craig FitzGerald, COO at wear control specialist Filter Focus, the majority of smaller scale electric motors operating locally are never greased or lubricated. “In my experience, most maintenance engineers are not even aware that there are bearings on electric motors. As a result, no lubrication is done, and costly and easilyavoidable failure occurs,” he explains. FitzGerald indicates that an electric motor is typically lubricated once at the manufacturing facility. “Generally it is a medium to low quality lubricant that is applied once only, and this is simply not sufficient for the operational lifespan of the motor. Due to the fact that these motors are often found in confined and hard-to-reach places that are located at-height or under moving conveyor belts, they are unwittingly neglected by site supervisors too.” Lubrication softens the harsh metal-to-metal contact between gears. During this contact, air bubbles are formed when cheap, low-quality

lubricants are applied. FitzGerald highlights the fact that this is one of the countless forms of destructive contamination. “There is often the belief that using cheaper lubrications will save the operation money, however, the expenses associated with the long-term maintenance and wear problems will prove to be exceptionally costly and disruptive.” Due to the harsh operating conditions in Africa, motors and gearboxes become par-

ticularly susceptible to rust, corrosion or deterioration. “These threats arise from the climate, dirty operational environments, as well as low level artisans and cleaners that spray the equipment with water during cleaning, inadvertently damaging the equipment.” An easy-to-apply and environmentallyfriendly RustPrufe corrosion protection solution for non-porous surfaces eliminates the need to repair damage to these surfaces. FitzGerald notes that RustPrufe – available locally through Filter Focus – is a painted or sprayed-on acrylic polymer emulsion that dries to form a seamless, skin-tight weather and UV-resistant protective barrier. “RustPrufe is the most convenient, costeffective and user-friendly option to ensure that these costly components are not damaged. What’s more, the components do not have to be sanded down or rust treated.” Unlike traditional tape, wax and oil coatings that must be scraped off and cleaned with solvents, RustPrufe does not leave behind a residue. It is also highly-durable. Enquiry no: 100

he tried-and-tested photoelectric O5D sensors from ifm electronic are distinguished by switch point setting to the nearest centimetre, colour-independent detection and reliable background suppression. The PMDLine series even detect shiny surfaces without any difficulty. Ifm has now extended this sensor family with laser class 1 allowing it to meet the requirements of applications in the automotive industry. In its compact housing, the O5D variant

combines long range, reliable background suppression, visible red light and high excess gain – plus laser class 1. Another advantage is its ease of use and switch point setting to the nearest centimetre via +/- buttons and display. The O5D family is an intelligent alternative to standard sensors, since their price and size are in the same range. Whether shiny, matt, dark or

light objects of any colour, reliable background suppression is always ensured. The sensors offer high flexibility of installation and can be easily mounted at any angle of incidence. Bearings that can take the heat

I

t is vital for bearings to last and deliver reliable quality service irrespective of temperature and application. SKF extreme temperature bearings are capable of operating at 350°C without the need for re-lubrication. Extreme temperature bearings are high quality units that deliver numerous cost saving solutions to applications that require optimum bearing performance in hot, dry environments on slow rotating machinery. Grease lubricated bearings often fail at temperatures exceeding 250°C because even special greases lose their ability to lubricate adequately above this temperature. In contrast, the SKF extreme temperature bearing is lubricated by a graphite cage up to 350°C, allowing for the bearings on any equipment to run at its optimum rate. Field experience shows that bearing service life in high temperature applications can be dramatically increased by using graphite lubricated extreme temperature bearings. For example, in a cooling bed for sheet metal manufacture, bearing service life was increased by a factor of three. In a typical application such as this, a single bearing of this kind can save up to 4,6 kg of CO2e and 1,5kg of grease per year. A cooling bed equipped with 5000 bearings can save 7,5 tons of grease and 23 tons of CO2e per year. This is equivalent to an 82% reduction of the climate impact compared to using grease-lubricated deep groove ball bearings. These calculations are based on both bearing and grease savings. The replacement of conventional grease lubricated bearings with SKF’s extreme temperature bearings will reduce costs across the board. Production does not need to be halted for maintenance purposes to allow for the continuous replacement of lubrication or Enquiry no: 103 re-lubrication.

Preventative maintenance for longevity

P

reventative maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity of trommel screens. “Multotec has had trommel screens running for over ten years that are still operational,” Anthony Yell, screening product manager, says. Customers can return trommel screens for refurbishment. The rubber lining is stripped off the steel structure, visually inspected for wear and then non-destructive testing carried out to determine the integrity of the trommel structure. “If it is still within specification it can be shot-blasted and re-rubber lined, whereupon it will be good to go for many more years,” Yell explains. “One of the biggest problems we have today with the larger trommel screens is the high wear rates of the screen media due to the high peripheral speed of the trommel screen itself.” In addition, the trend towards larger mills means higher flow rates and velocities. “Double the velocity on a polyurethane screen equates to an increase in the wear rate by a factor of five,” Yell notes. “We have invested extensive research and development into producing panels that last longer. It has been our objective to develop panels that will last that length of time,” Yell says. Multotec has the added advantage of being able to supply polyurethane panels for smaller feed sizes where the main wear criteria is sliding abrasion and rubber panels where impact is the wear criteria. “We design and manufacture both rubber and polyurethane panels in house,” Yell points out. A recent trend in mineral processing has been that mills are tending to get bigger and therefore trommel screens are becoming larger as well. “This can pose challenges in terms of acceptable life of screen media. However, we do have solutions for this,” Yell says. “The most important factor for us is understanding the trommel duty and the load comEnquiry no: 104 ing off the end. “

Lightning strike problem solved

eading lightning protection systems (LPS) provider, Pontins, has installed a unique protection system for ABSA Bank’s Project Lumen - the world’s largest Light Emitting Display (LED) – in the Johannesburg CBD. The system comprises, inter alia, an insulated, high-voltage resistant HVI conductor, designed and developed by Pontins’ German partners, DEHN, in conjunction with Pontins’ engineers. “Project Lumen had specific requirements in terms of lightning protection,” says Trevor Manas Pontins MD. “Besides the significant height and size of the structure, it is situated in an area of very high lightning density – approximately 12 strikes/km2/year – and since being switched on in November 2013 it has suffered damage from numerous direct strikes.” Manas says that the previous “Cross Bonded” system failed on Project Lumen because this conventional technology did not maintain a separation distance between the lightning protection conductors and the LED panels or the electrical/data supply cables of

the panels. Before installing the HVI Conductor to SANS/IEC 62305 standards, Pontins undertook risk assessments and calculated the required separation distance. The risk assessments determined that the highest lightning protection level (LPL) – level one – was required for Project Lumen. Separation distance – determined utilizing DEHN Toolbox software – is the minimum distance between the protection device and electrically conductive materials to prevent flashover and sparking, and to ensure that the lightning currents are reliably conducted to the earthtermination system. The ABSA Towers building was constructed using steel-reinforced concrete. Electric continuity tests performed on the concrete steel reinforcing at strategically exposed points established that the interconnected reinforcing should be used as natural down conductors,

35

and natural earth electrodes, to enhance the division (splitting) of the lightning’s current in the event of a direct strike. “Basically, a conductor must have sufficient currentcarrying capacity, be insulated to the sufficient electrical strength and prevent creeping discharge or flashover and the particular Conductor that we installed fits the bill perfectly. This coaxial conductor has an inner copper core wrapped in thick-walled high-voltage-resistant insulation that is encased within a special semi-conductive weather-resistant sheath,” Manas says. For this installation, two three-metre masts were installed, with two HVI Power Conductors (LPL 1). At that height, dealing with the installation challenges and safety concerns was no mean feat. Nonetheless, the installation was accelerated and accomplished within three weeks. Since this project was completed in December 2014, no damage of the LED system has been reported. Industry-first ‘green’ floor concrete

A

friSam and Concrete Laser Flooring (CLF) have collaborated successfully in introducing an industry-first environmentally-friendly floor concrete by replacing cement in the mix design with more fly ash, activated slag and admixtures. In typical concrete mix designs, 20% to 30% of the cement is replaced with extenders. In this new concrete, up to 70% can be replaced with the activated slag and fly ash, with the addition of admixtures to achieve superior quality and strength. “Such development is put through a rigorous research, design and testing process to ensure that our customers can have the benefit of a superior performing concrete that are also kinder to the environment,” Amit Dawneerangen, National Multi-Product Solutions Manager at AfriSam, says. “A larger trend within the industry is the move towards ‘greener’ concrete, based on the understanding that cement is a finite resource and that we need to make concrete that uses less cement. There is a growing

demand for this from environmentally aware property developers that are driving the trend for ‘green’ buildings,” Peter Norton, Managing Director of CLF, says. With its main focus on new solutions and innovation, AfriSam is also joining forces with CLF in producing low-shrinkage concretes for floors. “Through this speciality design mix, less shrinkage occurs, which significantly reduces cracking in floors. We are currently in the process of researching, designing and testing

this product. The goal is to get the best performing product, with the lowest shrinkage at the best value for our customers,” says Dawneerangen. Tilt-up construction is another method the two companies have successfully collaborated on in projects such as a 10 000 m² building in Pomona. The method utilises the floor of a building as a casting bed for wall panels, which are then simply lifted into position by a crane. Another option is for the wall panels to be cast at a precast yard and then transported to site. According to Norton, this was a very successful project. “After we cast the floor, we were then requested to cast the walls as well. Such a project would traditionally have used 2 000 m³ of concrete only, but in this instance that figure doubled to 4 000 m³.” The cost of the additional concrete used is offset by not only the speed of building, but by a marked improvement in the quality of the finished structure and a dramatic decrease in construction time, which results in significant labour savings and other input costs. ‘Digitally Smart’ water utility

W

ater utilities tackle a number of challenges relating to service resilience, customer service, regulation, compliance and operational excellence. Fortunately, technology is available that can assist to resolved these challenges and improve operations significantly and importantly, service delivery. This is according to George Hunt, Global Consulting Partner for Water, WCS, Wipro Limited and Shailendra Singh (pictured), Country Head, South Africa, Wipro Limited. Investment in this emerging market is booming, and as economies across the continent experience rapid growth, demand is outstripping the ability to supply. The delicate balance between supply and demand is progressively being felt in many countries, where limited water resources combined with massive growth in demand and an increasingly urbanised population are putting pressure on water and wastewater infrastructure.

The outcome of this has been a growing number of interruptions to water supply as much-needed upgrades to the existing water utilities infrastructure are delivered. Rising cost of operations and increased consumer demand have created a highly challenging environment for water utility providers. Addressing these challenges requires a much smarter approach to using data and sophisticated analytics technologies to deliver greater insight, improved performance and enhanced efficiency. Improving operational efficiency is one of the most crucial aspects to ensuring effective water utility service delivery. Predictive analytics and intelligent IT solutions can now assist utility providers to reduce costs by enabling them to forecast demand and address potential supply before they become crisis. Accurate assessment of asset risk also allows for proactive mainte-

nance of the infrastructure. Ensuring environmentally sustainable operations and reducing the environmental impact of adverse incidents is also key. Water leakage is one of the core areas that need to be addressed, as it impacts both carbon footprint and efficiency. Using analytics solutions, subtle changes such as water pressure reduction can be monitored over time, which can help alert providers about potential water leaks. Leveraging the power of smarter analytical capabilities has enabled water utility providers to make more accurate and fact-based decisions. Proactive handling of leaks can prevent water loss, and faster response times to abnormal weather events such as flooding and water main bursts can reduce wastage and improve service. Harnessing the power of data, analytics and technology can assist water utility providers to improve customer service, operational efficiency and environmental impact, while enabling more effective delivery of services. Innovation in manufacturing

ver the past decade, packaging has evolved from a purely functional device intended to convey vital information and protect the product, to a key roleplayer in the purchasing and decision-making process. However, the equipment used to label, code and print on packaging has to be on trend and remain innovative and cost-effective in order to stay relevant and ahead of the competition. The need for high performance label applicators are becoming more vital for the manufacturing industry; it is important that machinery is designed for packaging lines that demand speed, accuracy and reliability in order for

various types of information - such as batch numbers, QR codes and variable numbering - to be seamlessly added to the label or directly on to the corrugates. In order to meet the demand of the everchanging manufacturing industry, Pyrotec’s PackMark division offers innovative and costeffective solutions for coding and labelling on packaging. Thermal Inkjet coders have been designed for serialised product identification solutions to enhance traceability for fast-moving manufacturing production lines such as food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. This consistent, high quality digital technology allows for clean

codes and information can also be changed in real-time to ensure accurate productions. For precision coding, the Continuous Inkjet coders are used to improve the printing of ‘best before’ dates and batch numbers on the products. In addition to this feature, it can also be used for security printing – fluorescent ink is used for printing and only visible under ultraviolet lighting. Print & Apply Labelling equipment allows for various types of information to be printed on to the packaging. Due to its range of interchangeable applicators and operational interventions such as the ability to print and apply at rates up to 125 packs per minute - irrespective of the data complexity or content. In addition to this, using a centralised data management system through integrated machinery networks can make any production line efficient. he new floor saw series from Wacker Neuson includes the four models BFS 735, BFS 940, BFS 1345 and BFS 1350 with blade diameters from 350 to 500 millimeters. They offer even lower hand-arm vibrations (HAV) that are now below the exposure level of 5 m/s² specified by the EU. This value makes it possible to operate the equipment for up to 8 hours per day. Lower HAV values also make work easier for the operator. The wheel base was also optimised: a wide track with a short wheel center distance offers optimal stability and good controllability. All models are equipped with high quality Honda gasoline engines. The new models also benefit from a long service life thanks to the lifetime-lubricated bearings. No re-lubrication of the bearings is therefore necessary, maintenance jobs take place less frequently and operating times are extended. The gasoline-driven floor saws generally have strong perfor-

Quality control of alcoholic beverages

Z

eutec Opto-Elektronik of Rendsburg, Germany has adopted 114 series OEM peristaltic pumps from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group in technology that partners the company’s latest SpectraAlyzer 2.0, - a near-infrared (NIR) analyser for alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer and spirits. Zeutec, a supplier of spectrometer systems, now relies on the peristaltic pumps for use in an auto-sampler, which is used to prepare samples ready for analysis by the SpectraAlyzer. The Zeutec SpectraAlyzer is able to indicate the most important parameters relating to the quality of alcoholic beverages in a matter of moments. In the case of wine, for example, such parameters will include alcohol, sugar and acid content as well as pH value, density and colour. The main advantage is that NIR methods can be carried out quickly and cost-effectively during the production process. For this reason, the SpectraAlyzer is already proving popular with large alcoholic beverage producers, such as Moët & Chandon and Pernod Ricard. For larger producers, it is particularly important to be able to carry out automated measurements because it can take a great deal of time to feed in and present samples manually. This is why Zeutec has developed its own compact XY autosampler which can take up to 32 samples automatically. “Around 60 measurements per hour are no problem when using the auto-sampler,” explains Daniel Hembd, Head of Research and Development at Zeutec. “The sample liquid is taken with a filling needle. Then, the peristaltic pump fitted to the back of the autosampler conveys the sample to the measuring cell, and then into a container.” When designing the auto-sampler, it was particularly important to be able to offer the end user as much flexibility as possible. This is why Zeutec relies on versatile 114 series OEM pumps from Watson-Marlow. “We tested pumps from several manufacturers, but most were limited in terms of possible applications,” says Mr Hembd. “For instance, they would usually only take a specific type of tube, but our customers often experiment with various tube materials and sizes. What’s more, most of the pumps we tried were too complicated to operate, particularly when it came to changing the tube. The pump is located at the back of the auto-sampler, so it is important to us that the tube can be changed easily.” Enquiry no: 118

Light steel frame building contractor course in high demand

T

he response of contractors to the Light Steel Frame Building (LSFB) training courses presented by SASFA is testament to the growing popularity of the LSFB method in South Africa. This is according to SASFA director John Barnard. “We recently successfully presented our 6-day contractors training course to a full house for the 17th time.” says Barnard. “The fact is that this course has grown significantly in popularity as an expanding number of building contractors, developers, architects and engineers become increasingly interested in learning about LSFB because of the demand on them to use the method as a building solution. “ The total number of students who have successfully completed the programme since its inception in 2009 stands at 281. The course is split into two sections: Steel frame components, and erection, covering introduction, the steel making process, properties of coated steel sheet, foundations, manufacturing of light steel frames and trusses, construction tools, wallframe set-out, handling, loads, floor framing, wall

framing, roof structures, and the installation of services. Internal lining, external cladding and insulation, covering the properties, manufacturing and benefits of glasswool insulation, acoustics, energy efficiency, environmental issues, storage and handling of Glasswool, tools and installation methodology. This is followed by a section on gypsum plasterboard covering properties, storage and handling, cutting, tools and application for walls, ceilings and finishing.

Understanding the waste tyre management fee

T

he way to get worth from waste is to turn it into something that people will pay money for, and the way to do that is to create a circular economy. Instead of making a product for consumers to throw away, we need to extend the life of the product beyond the consumer stage by recovering, recycling and reintroducing it into the economy. Experience shows that where manufacturers are encouraged to regulate themselves, some do and some don’t. Some pay and some won’t. In Germany, 60% to 70% of tyre manufacturers at most pay an industry body to discharge their extended producer responsibility for them. Here in South Africa, the figure stands at 99.8%. The difference is that in Germany, extended producer responsibility is

voluntary; in South Africa, it is mandatory. By law, every tyre manufacturer and importer must pay a waste management fee of R2.30 per kilogram to the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (REDISA), an industry-independent body that shoulders their recovery and recycling liability for them. However, given the lack of success following the plastic bag tax, it is reasonable to query what the difference is between that, and the REDISA waste management fee. Whilst the money collected from the plastic bag tax still goes directly into the fiscus, funds collected by REDISA are paid directly to the organisation and there is no government involvement. REDISA then allocates spend of the money as clearly outlined in the gazetted REDISA Plan.

Finally, fibre cement board for external cladding is addressed, including the installation of the vapour permeable membrane, sizes and availability of fibre cement - boards and planks, fixing accessories, installation guidelines, and door and window frame installation detail is presented. Barnard says that to ensure that the theoretical concepts are well understood, the course includes a practical component, consisting of setting out of wall frames, squaring, levelling, and erection of walls, erection of roof trusses, installation of plumbing, external cladding (FC boards, OSB and FC planks), insulation and internal lining (gypsum board), and internal joint finishing. “Finally, it is illustrated how difficult it is to make a hole in 15mm thick gypsum board, and how easy and quick it is to repair,” he says. Students generally come from all over the country for this course and usually have had prior building industry experience. SASFA is planning to present the course in Durban in July, and Cape Town, in September. Enquiry no: 120

One of the key challenges of the plastic bag levy is that the funds collected go directly to the government fiscus. Therefore the Department of Environment Affairs (DEA) has to apply to the Treasury to get any of that money back in order to set up the promised recycling industry. When the REDISA Plan was established, Minister Molewa emphasised that the waste management fee collected would not end up in the general fiscus. The advantage of this is that REDISA is 100% accountable for what happens with the funds. This is monitored annually by an external audit partner, KPMG. REDISA director, Stacey Davidson, said that “Once tyre manufactures pay the waste management fee, the manufacturers will not be required to handle the recycling of the tyres themselves. Instead, REDISA has taken over this responsibility and is ultimately developing an industry whereby old tyres are being recycled into new products.” Enquiry no: 121

We drive port logistics

SEW-EURODRIVE is familiar with the requirements of port logistics. Several stations are passed through, from the time the goods are delivered to the ports, right up to the point at which they are handed over to other means of transport, such as trains, HGVs or ships. In each of these steps, the goods must be lifted, moved, stacked and turned. Modularity, reliability and availability are demanded in order for these wide range of tasks to be performed economically. The machines, systems and technology involved are exposed to particular ambient conditions and must therefore be robust, able to withstand high torque loads and have a long service life, while also coping with an increased degree of internationalisation. Our reliable mechanical and innovative electronic drive components are the result of decades of experience in building drives for the field of port logistics. SEW-EURODRIVE - Driving the world.
