ZN is emerging as a key cog in the wheel of national plans to wean the country off its dependence on coal for electricity generation. The Department of Energy has announced that Richards Bay will be the location for a 2000-megawatt (MW) gas-to-power plant, part of a R50.5-billion programme to convert liquefied natural gas LNG imports into electricity to add 3 126 MW of capacity to the grid by 2025. Coega in the Eastern Cape will get a 1000 MW gas-to-power plant. “The programme is designed to ensure that the LNG import and regasification facilities are complementary to the development of indigenous gas and/or development of a regional gas pipeline network,” the department said. It is estimated that Richards Bay will initially require 1 million tons of LNG annually, with Coega needing 600 000 tons. Each of the ports will need approximately R25 billion in infrastructure upgrades to handle the LNG. The department estimates that the country-wide demand for LNG could increase to more than 10 million tons annually, with KZN accounting for 3,1 million tons, the Eastern Cape 3,9 million tons and Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State a combined 3,2 million tons. The government will now seek bidders to manage the project, which will be underpinned with a power-purchase agreement between the winning applicant and Eskom. Interested bidders must submit a request for pre-qualification in February. The Richards Bay plant, when it becomes operational, will complement other non-coal power projects in the province, including Eskom’s Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme in the Little Drakensberg and the Avon Peaking Power gas turbine open cycle plant at Shakaskraal. New Durban gases hub a sign of confidence in local economy

G

ases company Afrox’s recently unveiled R60-million filling and engineering services hub in Riverhorse Valley, north Durban, is a sign of confidence in the KwaZulu-Natal economy, said its GM Operations Jan Ntuli. “This modern 18 000-square-metre site is designed to international standards, best practice and expertise to guarantee our gases and services are of the highest quality,” said Ntuli. “Operations are backed by the best in technologies and expertise of the global gases, engineering and technology giant, The Linde Group.” He said this gave the company the ability to meet the growing demands of large and small industry across KZN with a filling capacity of 22 000 cylinders a month. This was an improvement of 15% from the old plant at Maydon Wharf. “The new facility has a fully stocked warehouse, customer engineering

services, service engineering department and a fleet of 10 distribution vehicles, all under one roof, and this ensures that we maximise the synergies between various departments to deliver excellent customer service,” said Ntuli.

One-stop-shop Afrox Riverhorse Valley offers a convenient one-stop-shop for Argoshield, CO2, nitrogen, helium, medical and food grade gases as well as portable cryogenic containers. The facility is hi-tech in design with the “heart of the hub” run by PLC controlled automated cylinder filling technology. In keeping with the high standards of good manufacturing practice, the new state-of-the-art medical filling plant is independent of the industrial filling hub. Afrox Riverhorse Valley is also

supported by a fully equipped onsite cylinder test shop, ensuring the high pressure gas cylinders are maintained and hydrostatically tested to legal requirements, adding a further safety feature to Afrox products. Afrox MD Schalk Venter said: “Our R60m Riverhorse Valley facility is geared specifically for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, aimed at benefiting customers in the medical, hospitality and industrial sectors, and sets a new standard by which modern industrial gases hubs will be measured. “In support of this new investment in KZN, our supplies of Handigas LPG via our Pinetown operations are guaranteed with added support of imported product into the Bidvest Tank Terminal in Richards Bay, where upgraded road and rail links ensure that Afrox can deliver its LPG in bulk, on time, all the time,” said Venter. R1.3bn biotech plant boost for KZN

ipla BioTec and Dube TradePort will be building Africa’s first fully integrated biopharmaceutical plant at the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) adjoining the King Shaka International Airport. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the commercial terms at a meeting in Goa, India recently. Overall investment for manufacturing and development costs is estimated at R 1,3 billion. The facility will be South Africa’s first biotech manufacturing facility for the production of biosimilars. The stateof-the-art-facility is set to produce a range of affordable treatments for cancer and other autoimmune diseases for the African and global market. MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala hailed the deal. “We welcome this investment with open arms, as the technological level of this investment has the potential to impact on a number of economic and social facets of our society, well beyond the sizable investment in the new manufacturing facility and the

estimated 180 permanent jobs that it will generate. “The nature of this investment is also socially important as it will provide lifesaving treatments for autoimmune diseases such as cancer, which are currently too prohibitive for the majority of South African citizens to afford. “The provision of affordable lifesaving medications to the majority of our economically active population will undoubtedly ease the burden on our society, ensuring that we have a healthier and highly productive population.” Dube TradePort Corporation’s Chairperson, Bridgette Gasa, said, “Cipla’s investment is further affirmation that we have created a worldclass investment destination, which is conducive to doing business in South Africa. Dube TradePort SEZ, together with the Province of KwaZuluNatal, boasts reliable infrastructure, services and tax incentives to attract both local and foreign direct investments”. “Cipla BioTec’s facility within Dube TradePort SEZ will allow them to fulfill both the local need and that within

the rest of the African market. The unique position of the new facility will enable seamless pharmaceutical export through the adjacent Dube Cargo Terminal as well as the multitude of connecting flights throughout the continent.” Dube TradePort Corporation CEO Hamish Erskine said, “Our infrastructure and roll-out program, together with our integrated approach towards attracting and retaining our investments, continues to bear fruit as witnessed by the steady stream of investments secured over the last three years. “With Cipla’s new BioTec facility at the forefront, Dube TradePort SEZ is positioning itself as a major host for medical and pharmaceutical orientated manufacturing investments, positioned to cater to the African and global markets. As part of this sector strategy, Dube TradePort will construct a specialised utility zone to service multiple pharmaceutical plants within a defined cluster.” The construction of the new facility is scheduled to start in early 2017, with full operations expected to commence

riving new industrial and manufacturing investment as well as agro-industry will be a priority for Hamish Erskine, the recently appointed CEO of the Dube TradePort Corporation, He took the helm of trade and logistics hub adjoining the Kings Shaka International Airport in an acting capacity last year following the axing of former CEO Saxen van Coller for failing to disclose previous criminal offences. Board Chairperson, Dr Zanele Gasa said Erskine’s appointment followed a “meticulous recruitment process” during which 143 applications were considered. “We are grateful to Hamish for his tried and tested leadership over the last 19 months. Although it appears to have been an extended length of time that the organisation has been led by an acting CEO, there has been no negative impact on the performance of DTPC. “In fact, the organization has excelled over the last 19 months and continued to deliver on its mandate.” Gasa said some of the achievements secured under Erskine’s watch included a clean audit for the fourth consecutive year; securing three new international airlines, namely Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways, all within two months; a 46% growth in international

air passengers between July 2015 and July 2016; and 25% growth in international cargo airfreight from January to July 2016. The DTI has also designated the DTPC as a Special Economic Zone. New or expanded operations at the hub include: • Yangtze Optics Africa Holding’s new R250-million optical fibre manufacturing facility, with 150 jobs created, 98% of these jobs going to local people; • Samsung Electronics increasing their footprint at DTPC with an additional R35-million warehouse facility; and • SA Health’s R150-million condom manufacturing facility creating 145 jobs.” In his new role as the CEO, Erskine will be responsible for leading the organisation as it grows its investment assets throughout its development zones under the umbrella of both the Special Economic Zones and commercial business zones. The Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone is expected to drive the development of new industrial and manufacturing investment as well as agroindustry and processing in Dube AgriZone. This will also expand to include a new Automotive Supply Park in the south of Durban. Enquiry no: 3

Network says yebo to R550-million spend in KZN V odacom will invest R550 million on capital expenditure in KwaZulu-Natal this financial year. The network’s KZN Managing Executive, Steven Barnwell (pictured), said the spending would be targeted primarily at expanding its 2G, 3G and LTE footprint in the province, helping to improve network capacity, enhance data speeds and reduce dropped-calls rates in the province. “I’m pleased to announce that R550 million has been earmarked for network investment in the KwaZulu-Natal province in the current financial year. We invested RI billion in the network in the region in 2015, bringing our network investment in the province to over RI.5 billion in 2 years. “The additional investment this year is part of our commitment to provide our customers in

I

the province with the best network, best value and best service.” The money will be used to deploy additional 2G, 3G and 4G base station sites in urban, townships and rural parts of KZN province. The region will add 50 new sites this year and this will bring the total to 1 750 sites by March 2017. “On a practical basis, this means that we’ll be bringing faster data services to hundreds of thousands of people who currently only have voice services and EDGE. On top of this, the upgrade will increase network capacity, provide improved voice quality and enhanced mobile data speeds in eThekwini, KwaMashu, Madadeni, Eshowe, Ulundi townships and in rural areas such as Nkabini, Kwaziba, Ongoye, Holo, Mphola, KwaDeshule, Ceza Zembeni and KwaQunwane.”

Barnwell said Vodacom’s 3G network now covers 96% of the province’s population, wider than any other service provider in that province. Its 4G coverage is currently at around 56% from 45% in 2015 and this has contributed to the 45% growth in data across the province. “Vodacom KZN now has the fastest data network in Ethekwini with 3G coverage of 99% and 4G at 97%.” He said the region had also launched eight new look Vodacom stores in the last eight months, bringing these stores in line with Vodafone’s global look and feel. “The new store design aims to put the customer at the heart of its service philosophy by ensuring that a customer’s needs are easily identified and taken care of in the most efficient manner possible.” More store launches and

3 upgrades are planned in this financial year. The region has also had a good year in its enterprise business as significant investment in infrastructure, skills building and developing capabilities are starting to pay off. “The enterprise business is showing signs of growth, supported by the take up of new products and services such as Smart plus tariffs, Cloud and Hosting services and Internet of Things solutions.” He said while pursuing commercial benefits, Vodacom was equally active in assisting government in achieving its imperatives especially in the health, agriculture and education sectors in the region. “Good quality networks are the bedrock of our business and thus having the best network is important as it helps us to provide our customers with a truly differentiated customer experience. “Without this consistent investment, customers will experience significantly slower download speeds and weaker coverage, particularly at a time when demand for data continues to Enquiry no: 4 explode in KZN.”

KZN development agency scoops Top Women Award

thala Development Finance Corporation has has won the Standard Bank Top Women Award in the Parastatal/Agency category. Ithala, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial development agency, aims to drive economic development by offering finance to the province's historically disadvantaged communities, women and the youth. The award is in recognition of a public sector entity that clearly and effectively demonstrates the highest level of gender empowerment. Hosted by Topco Media in partnership with Standard Bank, the awards celebrate organisations, individuals and government departments and parastals that have made significant strides in gender empowerment in the workplace. The awards are dedicated to recognising

outstanding leadership, inspiration, vision and innovation in organisations that have stepped up and shaped women’s roles within the private and public sectors. Some of the criteria against which Ithala was evaluated were measurable and accountable leadership that is committed to developing historically disadvantaged individuals; the organisation’s gender equity policies; procedures that increase the skills development of women employees and being actively involved in community development and programmes that promote job creation. In its category, Ithala was up against the likes of PRASA, Rand Water and Tshwane University of Technology. Of Ithala Group’s total staff complement of 833, 49,5% are women. The percentage of women in executive and senior management is 40% while middle management is at 28%. The Corporation Board of Directors compris-

es 57% women while 61% of Ithala’s banking services branches – 22 of 36 branches – are headed by women. In the 2015-16 Financial Year, 66% of the agency’s training spend was allocated to women. In addition, the appointment of Yvonne Zwane, a female Group Chief Executive in December 2011, is a first for the agency. “As a development agency, we are committed to promoting gender diversity in leadership which we believe is critical to business success,” said Zwane. “Greater strides are being made by women in the workplace, especially as we see growing

numbers of women being involved in high level decision-making. “During 2015, four tea attendants, originally based at Ithala’s Corporate Services Centre in Umlazi, were given the opportunity to take on frontline positions as receptionists at the newly-built Ithala Trade Centre at Durban’s Point Waterfront, thereby advancing them professionally and personally.” On the award, Zwane said: “Such recognition is motivation for us to continue with the work that we do and build on our 57-year legacy of accelerating the delivery of socioeconomic development and empowerment of Enquiry no: 5 women”.

4 Pumi Motsoahae Chief Executive Officer Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone

T

he Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) recently welcomed and relishes the announcement to host a 2000 Megawatt plant for Liquiefied Natural Gas (LNG) to energy plant with great humility and pride. The Minister of Energy: Honourable Tina JoematPetterson delivered the ground-breaking news at the South African Gas Options Conference held in Cape Town from 3 – 5 October 2016. The multi-million-rand investment is set to drastically change the economic landscape of not only the Richards Bay region but the entire district as thousands of job opportunities during and post construction are guaranteed. The Richards Bay IDZ and local municipality, uMhlathuze Municipality, have worked tirelessly for a period of

KZN Industrial & Business News

two years to ensure that Richards Bay is poised to host a “Gas hub”. Natural gas is capable of providing more than just electrical power, it will also provide direct heat and chemical feedstock for industrial processes, commercial and residential cooking and heating applications as well as offer alternative fuel source for transportation. The choice of awarding Richards Bay 2000 Megawatts of a possible 3126 Megawatts was self-evident given the competitive advantages of the Richards Bay area, particularly the availability of space for a berth for a floating storage and regasification unit (FRSU). The city of uMhlathuze has already allocated approximately 20 hectares of land for the gas to power plant sta-

tion around the Bay Side area. The gallant efforts of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) led by MEC Sihle Zikalala were greatly commendable in ensuring that RBIDZ is at the forefronts of development of the oil and gas industry in the province of KZN. And further, MEC Zikalala emphasized that Richards bay needs to align itself around Gas opportunities and should thus elevate itself as the gas distribution hub. This investment will not only contribute to employment opportunities in Richards bay and neighbouring areas, but it is a huge investment opportunity for the Richards Bay and the KwaZulu-Natal Province as a whole.

he incorporation of DCD Venco into DCD Heavy Engineering in Vereeniging is consolidating the capacity of two iconic South African manufacturing operations into an optimised business well placed for growth, according to DCD Heavy Engineering general manager Dawie Marais. “Moving DCD Venco from Newcastle was not an easy decision, but it was clear to the holding DCD Group that the businesses needed to be resized and aligned to market conditions,” said Marais. “Over recent years, the depressed state of the mining industry in particular made trading conditions very difficult for both firms.” With operations now being brought under DCD Heavy Engineering’s three operational units – North Works, South Works and Vanderbijlpark – the cost base is being reduced and the utilisation of facilities optimised, he said. While DCD Venco’s Newcastle facilities offered light and medium fabrication and machining capabilities, the Vereeniging sites service customers across a range of work from light to ultra-heavy in grade.

“The result is that the consolidated facilities can provide the same services as the two facilities offered separately,” said Marais. “For Venco customers, we can now offer more capacity in terms of manufacturing space, lifting capacity and ‘under hook’ clearance.” While some of the more than 200 staff could be relocated, he highlighted the importance of retaining the decades of specialised engineering skills within the DCD Group that allows high quality standards to be applied throughout the planning, procurement and manufacturing processes. “The company has in recent years invested over R100 million in equipment and machine upgrades to improve its overall technological offering,” he said. “We also invest heavily in skills development, having expanded our training facility in 2014 where apprentices are trained as fitters and turners, electricians, boilermakers, welders and riggers.” Services at DCD Heavy Engineering include vertical and horizontal rolling, turning, machining, heat treatment, shot blasting and painting. he Engen Oil Centre concept is an initiative undertaken by the lubricants division of Engen Petroleum to empower small enterprises to service lubricant customers in a proactive and efficient manner. The first Oil Centre was established in 2005 and the concept has grown from strength to strength with a network of successful operators established within the major urban areas of South Africa. The Engen Oil Centre was previously known as The Oil Centre. Engen has decided that it is the right time for the Oil Centre naming convention to be brought closer to the Engen mother brand thus strengthening the link between Engen and the Oil Centre.

This will benefit the business operators as they are now able to leverage off the strength of the Engen brand in South Africa as well as any marketing initiatives. For consumers who want the quality, experience and expertise offered by Engen, but who purchase smaller volumes and would prefer to have same-day deliveries, the Engen Oil Centre is the ideal partner. ey Industry and government automotive industry players will gather in Durban next April in a concerted effort to drive manufacturing growth in the sector. The occasion will be the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers of South Africa (NAACAM) show, which bills itself as South Africa’s premier automotive manufacturing expo. NAACAM President Dave Coffey said the show, to be held every two years on a rotational basis in the automotive manufacturing centres of the country, would accelerate the extent of localisation (locally made components used in the assembly lines of South African based OEMs) and volumes of exported locally made components. This was also one of the issues highlighted at a Durban information session ahead of the inaugural show which takes place at the Durban ICC from April 5-7, 2017. Rodwell van Wyk of Portugal-based JR Moldes said he hoped the show would help the company link up with local suppliers as well as

JR Moldes, under the JRM Tooling name, recently opened an operation in Uitenhage to support the local plastic injection moulding industy. Langalakhe Manango of Innova Wheels said he and his business partner Phillip van der Byl were seeking backing finance of around R5 million to help set up an aluminium wheel plant

for passenger cars in KZN. Coffey said the automotive sector's collective strategy was to increase local vehicle production to volumes that justify deeper levels of localisation. "NAACAM fully supports government’s longterm objectives for the South African automotive industry, namely the production of highvolume, high-quality vehicles at a competitive cost and with deeper levels of local content. The NAACAM Show, which will showcase the total supply chain - NAACAM members and non-members alike - is designed to assist in achieving these objectives.'' Coffey said.

waZulu-Natal is South Africa’s second largest economy, after Gauteng and also boasts the second highest level of industrialisation in the country. As such, it’s optimally situated to drive a growth pattern in manufacturing. That’s according to Charlene Hefer, Portfolio Director at Specialised Exhibitions. “With the development of a number of economic hubs and access to thriving ports, together with strong rail and road links, the province is primed for expansion. “The KwaZulu-Natal Industrial Technology Exhibition (KITE) forms an important link in the

chain,” Hefer said. Providing its 110 exhibitors with a platform to showcase their products and services to the industry, KITE continues to form an integral part of any industrial technology company’s promotional strategy. “No other locally based exhibition has the ability to attract a targeted audience that is focused on sourcing and buying the products and services on offer at KITE. The 2017 event is being held once again at the Durban Exhibition Centre, from 26 to 28 July 2017 and is set expand on its previous successes.” In recognising the challenges presented

by a sharp reduction in demand for mineral commodities as well as the negative impact of the drought, the province has established two substantial industrial economic hubs to enable trade, the Dube Trade Port and Richards’ Bay industrial development zone (IDZ). Through these and other initiatives, the provincial government is seeking to support big and small business to trade locally and internationally, focussing on areas like agriculture, agro-processing, tourism, petroleum and the motor industry

GREEN INDUSTRIES & RENEWABLE ENERGY

How new diesel technology supports clean power development

ith climate trends now demanding that all users of power employ tactics to reduce harmful emissions that impact the environment, and renewable energy solutions advancing beyond the infancy stage, many are asking how relevant diesel power is. Nalen Alwar, Projects Sales Manager for Cummins Power Generation Southern Africa, believes it still has a place and can even contribute to a cleaner, greener future for the region. He points out that diesel power is still the mainstay solution for operational resilience and industrialisation in remote areas and that, “significant technology improvements have been made towards reduction in capital, operating costs and environmental stewardship”. Compact designs have resulted in footprint reductions and increases in power output have been achieved by increasing cylinder peak pressure, while also reducing the conventional number of cylinders required. Ductile iron blocks with the highest structural strength are used to achieve multiple overhauls, with minimal remanufacturing. Durable pistons can be forged from a single piece of steel, allowing reuse at the rebuild stage.

W

“Premium materials are used for piston rings and hardened cylinder features, together with enhanced piston cooling, reduced piston-ring temperatures and increased wear resistance and cylinder life. This reduces total lifecycle costs,” says Alwar. The efficiency of a diesel engine is most directly tied to combustion rate – the degree to which the fuel is completely burned during ignition. This is typically a function of how finely and evenly dispersed the fuel is during injection into the combustion chamber. Turbocharging, which forces excess air into the chamber, also improves the combustion rate, which is why two-stage turbocharging, with intercooling between the stages, is now common for diesel gensets. Alwar explains that a Modular Common Rail System (MCRS) enables diesel engines to achieve exceptionally low fuel consumption for their power output. “The MCRS injectors are capable of extremely high-pressure injection,

Reduction (SCR) technology has been used successfully on new Cummins diesel gensets to reduce NOx emissions by as much as 95%. Another method often used with SCR is exhaust-gas recirculation, which sends part of the exhaust gases back to the combustion chamber. This lowers the adiabatic flame temperature, allowing for lower temperature combustion and reduced NOx production. SCR also results in 5% more fuel efficiency. “Digital controls are essential for the newest gensets, which rely on high-pressure commonrail fuel-injection systems and precise control of ignition and combustion. They are also necessary where tight emissions compliance is a consideration.” Another advantage is that digital controls can monitor the real-time state of a wide variety of operating parameters, and display them on a centralised panel, as opposed to less sophisticated analogue systems. Alwar indicates that this allows operators to identify and correct faults much more quickly, leading to more reliable power and less downtime. “What is more, they also allow for remote monitoring and operation.” Enquiry no:10

Solar energy company set for growth

ith the debate around power generation in South Africa remaining a political one, many organisations are looking to control their own power infrastructure through the installation of solar systems. In itself a wise move, the costsaving and exploitation of sustainable resources, makes it an obvious consideration. In addition, the price of solar installations has come down markedly over the last few years and the return on investment (ROI) has fallen considerably. Kjion Energy SA, a subsidiary of ICT Group Holdings, which provides PV solutions with or without battery storage for large commercial and industrial sites, is expanding its footprint and growing the team. “As demand increases, we’re increasing staff and training them up. I believe it’s due to the fact that we offer a high quality range of products and integrity in our service,” said

Johann Wassermann (pictured), Sales and Marketing Manager at Kjion Energy SA. The solar industry grew massively when Eskom’s load-shedding became a regular occurrence, affecting the economic stability of many companies. “Suddenly everyone was an expert on solar systems, spawning fly-by-night installers, and creating a perception that solar is unreliable and expensive. “Avoid the cheap imports and use reliable installers who will honour their warranties,” Wasserman advised. Post-implementation support is an important aspect of an installation, while credible consultation beforehand is just as important. “It’s about providing a suitable solution for specific requirements. For example, if the bulk of power consumption is required during the day, a grid-tied solution is ideal and means that batteries - the biggest expense - are not necessary.”

Modern concrete roads offer environmental benefits

M

which leads to a reduction in particulate matter emissions. This method replaces traditional mechanical injection with electronically-controlled multiple high-pressure injections during each combustion cycle.” Rather than rely on separate injectors controlled by a camshaft, it uses a single system that supplies all the injectors in the engine with a common source of fuel. This allows much higher fuel pressures than a mechanical injection system, which maximises vaporisation of the fuel, and thus combustion rate. Modern high-pressure commonrail diesel fuel systems allow for much higher fuel pressures, and much more precise and flexible injection of fuel into the combustion chamber. To meet Tier 4 low-emission standards as set out by the US government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Selective Catalytic

odern concrete roads are a far cry from the concrete pavements of old which are still in existence today but were designed long ago to very different design criteria to those employed today. That’s the view of Bryan Perrie, managing director of The Concrete Institute who says early concrete roads were laid using what are now regarded as obsolete techniques and equipment. He says modernised designs, new construction methods, better surface finishing and sophisticated machinery mean that it is nowadays possible to produce high-quality concrete pavement surfaces that satisfy the needs and objectives of road users, neighbouring communities, and road managers. “There is no doubt that concrete pavements offer substantial environmental economic and social benefits. Concrete roads should be more widely regarded as the sustainable solution to South Africa’s road network. They are the natural choice for projects where performance, value, longevity, social responsibility and concern for the environment are paramount,” says Perrie. Concrete pavements, furthermore, offer a long service life which normally exceeds 30 years. In addition, concrete pavements require relatively little maintenance and repair and produce long-term savings in raw materials, transport and energy. The reduction in traffic delays caused by road works on concrete pavements also cuts fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions. Perrie adds that an important advantage of

concrete roads which is not always apparent is the fuel saving such pavements offer for cars and goods vehicles. “The National Research Council of Canada carried out a series of investigations which focused on various types of pavements and vehicles in different seasons of the year. Reduced fuel consumption by heavy trucks was observed in all phases for concrete roads when compared to asphalt pavements. “The studies found that fuel saving on concrete pavements for empty and full tractortrailer units ranged from 0.8% to 3.9% in four to five periods in the year, based on 95% reliable survey results. On this assumption, you are looking at an average fuel saving of 2.35% which is certainly not negligible and would represent an immense difference in overall fuel consumption as well as emissions of Greenhouse Gas over the lifetime of a busy freeway,” Perrie says. The Transport Research Laboratories in Great Britain carried out research to determine the effect of the rigidity of the pavements on fuel consumption. Here the reduced reflection of concrete roads resulted in a 5.7% reduction in rolling resistance, also providing fuel savings. “Similar fuel economy results have been obtained from extensive research done in Sweden, Japan, and the American states of Texas and Massachusetts. Apart from the type of pavement, the evenness and surface texture of the road surfaces are important factors influencing fuel consumption." Enquiry no:12

The company has a project in the pipeline which will see an office complex in Gauteng fit 140 solar panels of 36.4 kWp on a roof area of approximately 240m². “It’s a grid-tied solution, with ROI between five and seven years” said Wassermann.

HEATING, COOLING & VENTILATION

P

Extending the life of pumps and fans

umps and fans are the foot soldiers of the process industry, but their quiet dedication means they are often ignored. This is done at the operator’s peril, because when these components break down or run below optimum efficiency the whole process suffers, warns Lars Kahlman, Senior Application Specialist at SKF. He points out that manufacturing and process companies are under huge cost pressures at the moment, making it vital to maximise assets and maintain uptime. “Only recently, a processing giant was forced to run its Finnish refinery at 70% utilisation following a malfunction in one of its cooling systems. The problem is expected to cause production losses of several tens of millions of euros – which drives home the importance of the humble fan to overall profitability,” Kahlman said. The specific refinery problem was caused by a new air cooler, which was installed during a

recent maintenance turnaround – showing that even brand new components can cause problems. If a component is malfunctioning, the temptation is simply to replace it. However, an upgrade – by relubricating, or changing a bearing set, for example – often makes more sense. He said replacing a part can mean huge upheaval, as the old machine is removed and a new one installed. People underestimate how much is involved in this process. Upgrading can avoid all that – and is likely to cost less. “In fact, upgrades are a necessary part of building plant efficiency over time. When commissioning a new plant, there is rarely enough money upfront to buy the best equipment across the board. However, it can actually be better – both economically and technically – to upgrade equipment over time. It helps operators focus on equipment with reliability issues and avoids ‘design overkill’ on the original plant.” Safety must never be compromised, however, he cautions.

“Plants that are specified with too much emphasis on cost reduction run the risk of being ‘under designed’ – and that can be dangerous.” In most cases, pumps and fans are upgraded to improve two things: reliability or efficiency. Kahlman said a good example of a pump reliability upgrade is changing the lubrication system. “In hot, humid regions – or a humid environment like a pulp and paper mill – there’s always a danger of bearings corroding through water ingress. Atmospheric moisture gets into the oil sump and condense, and is transferred to the bearing by the oil rings. Just 200ppm of water in oil is enough to degrade

New eco-friendly chillers and heat pumps land in SA

arrier has introduced the latest generation of AquaForce chillers and heat pumps using HFO R-1234ze, a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant from the Carrier PUREtec family of long-term refrigerant solutions. Carrier, which operates in South Africa through the joint venture AHI Carrier, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). “AquaForce with HFO R-1234ze boasts an energy efficiency gain of 5% in both heating and cooling applications when compared to the traditional R-134a refrigerant, and reduces greenhouse gas footprint by up to 10%,” said Jaco Smal, commercial

bearings fast. “A common solution is to fit an oil mist lubrication system, like the SKF Alemite ones, which sprays microsized droplets of oil at the exact lubrication point. It guarantees fresh oil in the system and cures water ingress. This type of system is becoming more common: around half of all refineries in the US are now using oil mist systems in their pumps.” One of the most effective efficiency upgrades is to introduce a variable speed drive (VSD) to the pump or fan. Done properly, this can slash energy consumption by a huge 30%. However, the electrical output of the drive can cause arcing – which can

destroy the bearing in a very short time. In extreme cases, this can happen inside three days. The answer, said Kahlman is to upgrade the system, most notably by fitting insulating bearings such as SKF’s Insocoat bearings (ceramic coated) or using hybrid bearings (ceramic rolling elements), which withstand electrical arcing. Fans have many similarities with pumps but often start with worse original design conditions. “At SKF we have a portfolio of upgrades such as self-aligning bearing systems, fan oil lubrication systems etc. that can help to boost their efficiency and reliability. For certain types of fan, the scope for upgrade is even larger than it is for pumps. As with pumps, VSDs can help to boost the energy efficiency of fans. Again, insulated bearings help to extend component lifetime. Another problem – far more common on fans than pumps – is misalignment. This is even more prevalent for large fans, which are commonly used in industries including pulp and paper, cement and metals processing. “An effective solution is to specify a self-aligning and axial free bearing, such as SKF CARB toroidal roller bearings. This corrects angular and axial displacement, while a standard spherical roller bearing takes the thrust loading.”

sales director, AHI Carrier. AquaForce with HFO R-1234ze is designed to lower CO2 emissions and improve energy savings significantly. R-1234ze, a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant, has a GWP of less than 1*. It serves as a replacement for the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) R-134a, used previously for screw chillers and heat pumps. In terms of heat pumps, the combination of Carrier technology with

HFO R-1234ze as a refrigerant has redefined heat pump operating limits to provide hot water of up to 85°C. This significantly extended operating range allows the new 61 XWH-ZE heat pump to meet all high-temperature heating applications such as district heating, space heating, sanitary hot water production or process heating. Stay cool in flow monitoring

owadays, almost all air conditioning, conveying or exhausting systems need monitoring of gas flow. Gas flow monitors are required to have

high reliability and minimal pressure loss. Kobold, represented locally by Instrotech, believes it offers an optimal solution with the flow

monitor of the KAL-L series. The KAL-L works according to the calorimetric principle. The sensor is heated up to a few degrees above the medium temperature. When the medium flows, the heat generated in the sensor is transferred to the medium, i.e., the sensor is cooled. This cooling process is a measure of the flow velocity. A second sensor measures the medium temperature. The compact mounted electronics compares the resistance of both sensors by means of a Wheatstone bridge circuit, and switches an output relay if the actual value drops below the set switching value. In addition to the two-colour LED indication, the current flow rate can also be read on a eight-digit LED bargraph. The adjustable switching range between 1-20 m/s fulfills the specifications of almost all systems. KAL-L features and benefits include a measuring range of 1 - 20 m/s air, accuracy in excess of 10% of reading, Pmax of 8 bar, tmax of 120°C, relay-output, no moving parts and negligible pressure loss. The installation by compression fitting or clamping flanges also allows retrofitting into existing plants. Enquiry no: 15

Benefits of solar heating for student accommodation

O

ne of the major issues in accommodation projects, whether it is student accommodation, hostels or similar, is the

abuse of the hot water, generally during the midday period when the building should be the least occupied. With hot water being one of the most expensive of the utility bills, a well designed solar water heating system with electrical backup for bad weather conditions has proved to be the most cost effective method of generating hot water. Durban-based Solar Beam, the longest operating solar company in South Africa with 38

years of experience in the design, manufacture and installation of bulk water heating systems for commercial and industrial applications, has recognised the need for a reliable and consistant method of controlling the hot water usage. This has recently been very effectively utilised in a student accommodation block, where a 6 000 litre solar water heating system is serving the needs of 250 students. Solar Beam has also installed a solar system at a cosmetic manufacturing plant, whereby solar heated water is used to raise the process water temperature above 80 degrees C.

New HVAC drive maximises energy saving

T

he new Movitrac LTP-B Eco drive from SEW-EURODRIVE has been designed to maximise energy savings in pump and fan applications for the HVAC sector. It also provides significant additional benefits such as reduced installation and maintenance costs, and less downtime. It is available from 0.75 kW to 2.2 kW (single phase), 0.75 kW to 250 kW 400 V (three phase) and 0.75 kW to 110 kW 500 V to 600 V (three phase). “Our ‘ease-of-use’ design philosophy has ensured that advanced features are simple to commission, without requiring extensive

knowledge of many parameters,” said Norman Maleka, National Sales Manager at SEWEURODRIVE. This was achieved by means of an in-depth study of the HVAC industry and its specific requirements, which were then incorporated into the new HVAC drive. The new drive is particularly cost-effective, as its built-in functionality includes pump stir cycle, dry run, and flexible pump station control – all achievable by means of easily-set parameters, as opposed to having to deal with extensive programming via the PLC.

However, the major advantage for customers is energy-saving. “As electricity is the main contributor to the running costs of a building, energy-saving is a top priority. Even though the initial cost of such technology might be higher, it is the long-term savings that are significant,” Maleka said. Commenting on the latest trends in energysavings, he said that Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) are now being incorporated in almost all facets of heating and cooling systems for buildings. Heat-recovery systems have also been developed to recover expelled air in order

A heating solution that burns less money

A

frox is offering the Lindoflamm range of innovative preheating, flame straightening and heat-treatment solutions that it says provide optimal heat transfer for the workpiece, reducing gas consumption, improving productivity and quality and reducing total cost. It also enhances safety on the factory floor, the company said. At the heart of each heating installation is the Lindoflamm burner with shapes and capacities that can be modified to customers’ application and are matched with the right fuel gas mixture. The special burners can be customised to create the perfect fit for every heating application. The heating solutions can be semi- and fully-automated and are tailored to customer’s requirements. Components and additional services can be offered from automatic ignition to monitoring, temperature control and documentation. “Unlike slow burning fuel gases, where main heat is in the secondary zone of the flame and a large amount of heat deflects from the material, resulting in gas losses, preheating time and loss of production, the unique Lindoflamm burners operate with acetylene and compressed air and the main heat contribution sits in

the primary zone of the flame,” a statement from the company said. This helps to direct the heat to the actual area to be preheated where very little heat is deflected off the plate. Preheating can prevent cracking and ensure specific mechanical properties and must be used whenever specified by applicable codes. Applications in the industry where Lindoflamm offers quicker preheating times, saving on production costs and labour include stationary pre-heating before welding and cutting (hand held pre-heating), maintaining interpass temperatures, preheat required where low alloy steels are used from minimum plate thickness of 30mm upwards, and flame straightening or flame hardening.

Prior to installing the Lindoflamm system and integrating with customers’ existing equipment, Afrox’s Application Development Team will visit the customer’s site to tailor-make a solution that is optimised according to pipe line installation, flow rates and pressure requirements, and conduct trials if appropriate. The Lindoflamm equipment is part of Afrox’s acetylene offer which supports the fabrication industry in the market place. According to the company, acetylene is the ideal fuel gas when efficiency, precision and accuracy are required as it produces the highest flame temperatures, providing rapid and concentrated heating. Acetylene also has the highest flame propagation rate, increasing thermal efficiency. “The introduction of Lindoflamm torches and burners has been one of the most innovative developments in the South African welding and cutting industry for some time,” said Afrox Application Development Manager Cutting, Heating and Safety, Hennie van Rhyn. “Trials conducted for customers have achieved significant cost savings, compared with existing liquefied petroleum gas heating applications.” Enquiry no: 18

to reuse it without having to reheat it again. When the air outside the building is cooler than the internal temperature, it can be used to cool certain areas down, without it having to go through a chiller, thus maximising energy-savings even further. ichell Instruments, represented locally by Instrotech, now offers their new MDM50 portable hygrometer that quickly and simply takes spot checks of dew point or moisture content down to -50°C dew point. Because it has its own self-contained sampling system, setting up the MDM50 involves simply connecting the hose to the sample point. There are no extra sample conditioning add-ons to purchase or to carry around. The integral sampling system allows for measurements of dew point to be made at pressure, up to 20 barg, with an option available to measure up to 300 barg. The integrated filter removes particulates down to 0.3μm which provides 99.5% protection to the sensor. The fast-responding polymer moisture sensor of the MDM50 gives rapid dew-point measurements in compressed air – T95 to -35°C from ambient typically in less than five minutes. The sensing element is highly

stable, resistant to contamination and, along with the robust and sturdy case, this means the hygrometer is well-suited to the often tough conditions in industrial applications. A long battery life is essential for making measurements in the field, especially in locations where there is limited access to charging points, so the MDM50 portable hygrometer has an operation time of 16 hours on one full charge. “This means users have the confidence that they can work all day without having to stop taking measurements for charging,” a statement from the company said. A universal charger is included with the unit and stored in its case, for when not in use. As well as dew point in compressed/instrument-air dryers, typical applications for the MDM50 include moisture measurements in medical gases, polymer chip and the output from refrigerated dryers.

s part of its transformation agenda and in pursuit of contributing to socio-economic development, Engen has implemented a Supplier Development pilot programme at their Prosperator facility in Durban. The programme has experienced some exciting results. “Engen is serious about transformation and has invested R78 million over four years to help mentor, nurture, train, upskill and develop qualifying small businesses,” the company said in a statement. To this end, it has identified key commodities and services that seek to ensure sustainable transformation of the supply chain via its Supplier Development initiatives. These include engineering, bulk fuel transportation, HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment and Quality) and construction. In partnership with Raizcorp, widely regarded as Africa’s most successful and established

for-profit business incubator model, the aim of the Supplier Development initiative at the Prosperator facility is to accelerate the success of Engen’s existing enterprise development entrepreneurs, said Unathi Magida-Njokweni, Engen’s Group Transformation Manager. “This will not only enable them to become fully fledged Engen suppliers, but it will also attract new suppliers who will form part of Engen’s supply chain,” she said. Engen’s Chief Procurement Officer, Reagan Marchant said in terms of the requirements of the Revised BBBEE codes, Engen is committed to help empower small and medium businesses and ensure real integration. “We implemented the programme in 2015 and can already confirm that three suppliers on our Supplier Development programme have been absorbed into the Engen Procurement supply chain and have been commissioned to undertake work for the Engen Refinery.

“There are currently an additional eight suppliers in the pipeline undergoing training in sectors such as engineering, bulk fuel transportation, HSEQ and construction. They all have the potential to further strengthen Engen’s supplier pool,” Marchant said. The three suppliers absorbed into the Engen Procurement supply chain and commissioned to undertake work for the Engen Refinery are: • Abjoy Construction, who were awarded a tender to provide perimeter fencing for the sports field opposite the Engen Refinery. The field is used by the local community and school children. This project provided job opportunities for four people. • BLK Wellness, who undertake medical waste removal and other wellness services required by the Refinery. • Clean Spot, who provides office cleaning services to the Refinery. “Raizcorp is proud to be partnering with

Pulp and paper giant gets a lift

K

onecranes have recently signed service contracts with a major player in the Southern African pulp and paper industry, Sappi Paper in Ngodwana and Sappi Saiccor. Sappi South Africa is part of a global company which provides dissolving wood pulp, paper pulp and paper-based solutions to its direct and indirect customer base across more than 160 countries. Approximately 5.6 million tons per year of paper, 2.5 million tons per year of paper pulp and 1.3 million tons per year of dissolving wood pulp are produced worldwide. Ngodwana Mill is situated in the province of Mpumalanga. It is a fully integrated kraft mill producing pulp for own consumption as well as newsprint and containerboard. In August 2013, the mill started producing dissolving wood pulp (specialised cellulose) for global markets. Konecranes has a fully functional branch on the Ngodwana premises, focused entirely on servicing the Sappi Mill there. Recently Konecranes installed two new cranes at Sappi Ngodwana, a 10-ton Wash Press Crane and a maintenance crane which is used

to change the eight-ton spool at the digester plant. A two-ton Jib Crane which carries equipment to the third floor at Ozone plant was also installed in order to avoid having to hire a mobile crane to do the job. A Lasch hoist was also extensively refurbished for Sappi at Ngodwana, with the crawl adjusted to fit a bigger beam before being erected back on site. Konecranes also does work with Sappi Saiccor, situated 30km south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. It is the world’s largest single site manufacturing dissolving wood pulp (specialised cellulose). Sappi’s Saiccor Mill has the capacity to produce approximately 800 000 tons of Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) dissolving wood pulp per annum, most of which is for the export market.

Sappi Saiccor has six Konecranes on site and Konecranes service, repair and load test various other cranes on site as well on a regular basis. Refurbishments and major repairs have been carried out recently on a variety of cranes of all makes. Konecranes are on standby 24/7 to minimalize breakdowns and downtime. “We are working on introducing our unique service tools to Sappi Saiccor, such as Truconnect, RailQ and Rope Q, which we believe will improve our ability to carry out specialized work in the future”, said John MacDonald, Service Director of Konecranes Southern Africa. “We are very happy to have a good working relationship with such a prestigious company as Sappi.” Enquiry no: 27

the new models, which were presented at the Bauma 2016 construction and mining equipent trade show in Munich, Germany. New to Bauma, the models TH627, the successor of the proven TH625, as well as all machines in the 7 to 9-meter class were shown. “What they all have in common: a new engine in keeping with the latest technological developments. Wacker Neuson therefore now offers a total of 10 finely tiered models,” a statement from the company said. Starting now, Wacker Neuson is installing an engine of exhaust emission stage 4 in the telehandlers with a stacking height between 7 and 9 meters. This also meets particularly strict emissions regulations, such as those for the urban sector. The TH627 is equipped with an engine that meets the requirements of exhaust emission stage 3B with a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC). With the TH627, Wacker Neuson moves into the popular 2x2 meter class, which owes its name to the compact dimensions with a height of 1.98 meters and a width of 1.96 meters. “With its high level of maneuverability, the compact telehandler is a valuable helper on tight construction sites. It is a versatile helper with a stacking height of nearly 6 meters and a payload of up to 2 700 kg,” the company said.

The new hydraulic system with 90 l/min discharge volume, an electro-hydraulic pilot control and a load-independent flow distribution (LUDV) make it possible to control the machine accurately. The automatic bucket return, an adjustable oil volume for all hydraulic auxiliary control circuits as well as energy-efficient LED work lights are optionally offered. For all new telehandlers, the three types of steering of front axle steering, all-wheel steering and crab steering are available for greater mobility. Using the front axle steering, the telehandler can move safely in traffic while the all-wheel steering allows for an extremely small turning circle. The crab steering on the other hand helps during parallel displacing of the machine, such as when maneuvering near a wall. The standard, highly variable drive system of the telehandler provides for high propulsive power and comfortable working. More efficiency in application and comfort for the operator is achieved through the end position damping in all cylinders, the material losses are minimised and the comfort level is increased for the operator due to the very sensitive steering. The automatic bucket return that is optionally available for all models allows for even faster work cycles. Enquiry no: 28

New equipment elevates KZN dairy’s production

eading KZN milk producer Dairy Day recently acquired six Crown 3-wheel electric forklifts with double batteries to cater for double shifts and two Crown powered pallet trucks, also with double batteries. The equipment was supplied by Goscor Lift Truck Company and is being used at Dairy Day’s new 15 000m² processing facility in Howick. The plant can process up to 600 000 litres of fresh milk per day and, in addition to milk, it is also well-known for its maas, yoghurt, cream, fresh juice, dairy blends, butter and powdered milk. “We think very carefully about every capital investment,” said Dairy Day Warehousing General Manager, Stuart Dickson, “and after looking at a few options we had no hesitation in choosing Crown equipment from GLTC. The machines are of the highest quality, they are efficient, easy to operate and most importantly, service and the backup support from the Goscor team is excellent.” Part of the deal was a Goscor-supplied battery bay, which was successfully installed based on Goscor’s vast experience of such facilities across a wide range of different warehouse conditions throughout the country. Crown, which is highly regarded globally in the dairy sector, is the world’s largest manu-

facturer of electric powered materials handling equipment. It has a reputation for well designed, durable, user-friendly machines. A key element in Crown’s success is its advanced technology and its ingenious ‘human factor engineering’, which gives the operator the security, confidence and momentum to accomplish benchmark warehouse productivity. Created in August 2014, Dairy Day came into being after it acquired and merged Stonelees Dairies and Honeydew Dairies. According to the company, the subsequent economies of

scale have ensured a secure volume of quality milk and related products to meet the future needs of its customers. Dairy Day believes its ownership structure is a model of progress and transformation in the dairy industry. It is owned by 31 dairy farmers in Kwazulu-Natal. Each farmer has a shareholding in direct relation to the number of litres he supplies. Dairy Day farmers hold 85% of the shares of the operating entity with the remaining 15% being held by the Dairy Day Farmers Workers Trust, which represents the supplier shareholders’ farm workers. Dickson says that while the Crown equipment required a slightly greater capital investment than some of its competitors, his company was comfortable that the entire package would cost less in the long run. “Taking into account the efficiency and durability of the machines and the quality of Goscor’s service and support we are sure that over the lifetime of the machines we will get the best possible return on investment,” he said. GLTC’s Dale Rosewall who managed the deal says that Dairy Day is a thoroughly professional company. “We look forward to working with Stuart and his team for a long time to come,” he said.

The group’s achievements and innovation in driving the competiveness of its clients were recognised with two Logistics Achiever Awards, and Imperial also netted an Enviro Award for its contribution to “greening” African supply chains. Imperial Health Sciences took home a Silver Award for a “three-in-one” project that is delivering multiple benefits for the company and its clients. “Running three different businesses under one roof, with one operations team and a single set of standard operating procedures that caters for the varied requirements of each company, was the challenge facing Imperial when we decided to integrate our pharmaceutical wholesaling business Pharmed, as well as some services offered by Imperial Retail Logistics, into the Imperial Health Sciences’ operation in Cape Town,” said the company’s chief business development and strategy officDDL KZN 150 x 205* 10/29/15 4:48 AM Page 1 er Cobus Rossouw.

He said Imperial’s innovative and effective approach to this project was yielding significant benefits, including improved service levels. “An impressive 98.28% total service level conformance was achieved within the first year of the project going live, an overall decrease in operational expenditure was realised and clients’ sales were maximised,” Rossouw said. In addition, the project delivered environmental benefits, since the consolidation of various operations and deliveries is resulting in lower electricity usage and fuel consumption. Imperial Logistics group company Resolve won a Silver Logistics Achiever Award in recognition of a unique alliance formed with client PFG Building Glass (PFG) and transporter Imperial Dedicated Contracts. “Our three year contract to set up and operate PFG’s logistics command centre at its Springs plant is based on a gain share principle where profit is only earned through transport savings achieved. It is a ground-breaking contract because the transporter is included in the gain share earnings,” Rossouw said. C

New generation of ‘XC’ booms

T

o adapt to today’s widespread need to enable people to work at height safely with increasingly heavy loads using a single machine, Genie Xtra Capacity (XC) boom lifts are designed to work in more applications that require higher capacities. “Industry-wide, there is a mix of high- and dual-capacity machines with different specifications” said Adam Hailey, Genie Director of Product Management, Terex AWP. “This can be challenging and confusing for operators, particularly when spec’ing a project that requires lifting heavy loads within a specific envelope. Responding to customer demand worldwide who need higher capacity within clearly defined working envelopes, the new generation of Genie XC boom lifts will consistently offer dual capacity on all of its models.” All Genie XC booms combine the benefits of a dual-envelope design to provide an unrestricted range of motion with a platform capacity of 300 kg and a restricted operating envelope capacity of 454 kg.

To support additional weight on the platform, Genie XC booms are engineered with an updated boom structure that boasts increased performance, range of motion and envelope control, as well as a robust jib capable of easily handling the standard 454 kg (1,000-lb) maximum capacity. “Genie XC booms reduce the number of lift cycles,” said Hailey, “as well as the amount of equipment operators will need to get tools and materials to work areas at height — doing more with a single unit saves time and increases productivity.” The XC nomenclature also lets rent-

al customers know that this new boom complies with the overload restriction guidelines in the current European EN280 and Australian AS 1418.10 standards as well as the proposed ANSI A92 and CSA B354 industry standards in North America. “Thanks to new technology incorporated into the design, Genie XC booms will carry more load than ever before, and some models will be able to work on higher slopes, giving the machines the unparalleled ability to complete higher capacity jobs in a wider range of applications,” said Hailey. To increase performance, decrease set-up time and improve overall productivity, all Genie XC models boast the ability to do zero-load field calibration. These new Genie booms are equipped with a load sense cell that continuously checks the weight in the platform and adjusts the envelope to match the load chart. New pallet shuttle system for Durban warehouse

L

eading warehouse storage solutions company, APC Storage Solutions SA has completed the installation of a turnkey system for customs franchised container freight station company, Intermodal Cargo Solutions. According to a statement from APC Storage Solutions, the contract to supply a pallet shuttle system was awarded against a number of competitors due to its numerous benefits and a design to aid the client develop a final solution. This included a sprinkler systems, for which one of APC Storage Solutions SA’s business partners was used. “Intermodal Cargo Solutions had been in talks with one of [our] competitors and required an additional service provider to propose and quote on a similar solution,” the statement said. “APC Storage Solutions SA was approached and took time to understand all the client’s needs, including facility layout, load units, pick rates and throughputs, etc. “The fact that Intermodal was dealing with various companies, each able to provide only a part of the overall required solution, counted substantially in APC Storage Solutions SA’s favour, as it was in a position to manage the entire project. “With this information at hand, the team submitted a design to meet the client’s requirements, which led to the contract being awarded to APC Storage Solutions SA.” Approximately 110 containers are received by Intermodal fortnightly and 5 500 pallets dispatched, resulting in total warehouse turnaround every two weeks. “Our proposed solution meant that we

needed to take the standard operating procedures, business rules and active target rate of receiving and dispatch into consideration, as well as receiving and dispatch door locations,” said Ettienne Meyburgh, APC’s General Manager – KZN Region & Automation. “This was necessary to allow the customer to optimally plan for pick and replenishment waves without negatively impacting on the warehouse flows.” APC Storage Solutions SA provided the first block of 30 metrewide, five levels high and 68 pallets deep; and another block of 10 meters wide, four levels high and 20 pallets deep, coupled with a WiFi radio pallet shuttle system operating on the FIFO principle. The installed pallet shuttle system was

New logistics certification launched

designed to prevent or minimise damage to racking units, to best control FIFO and batch receive and dispatch operations. It also boosts pallet load and unload rates, and therefore throughput rates. The pallet shuttles moves along special rails attached to the racking, eliminating the need for aisles as storing and extracting pallets is achieved via remote control using WiFienabled tablets. As the pallet shuttle has its own ‘intelligence’ and electrical supply system, it is able to stock pallets deep inside storage tunnels, retrieve and convey them to the front of the tunnel. Its deep lane storage and retrieval, with the ability to transport various pallet sizes with weight loads of up to 1 500 kg, and at

speeds reaching 1.3 m/s, adds to increased productivity and enhances product safety. Operator time is reduced by half, in/out flow efficiency is retained and available storage capacity is maximised. In addition, overall efficiency improvements are gained by safer pallet handling (a 10 mm accuracy rate), electronic pallet length checks for optimal density storage, and the fact that operators remain outside of the tunnels. The pallet shuttles have several safety and control systems in place, which include incorporated electrical components that allow autonomous displacements, radio frequency commands transmitted to the shuttle’s PLCs, an incorporated emergency stop button, sensors to bring the shuttle to a halt in the event of a collision or obstructions picked up whilst moving in the tunnels, and bumpers and stop points to avoid would-be accidents. These are critical skills for industry sectors including manufacturing, retailer, government, military, energy production and supply, and other industries with a large distribution component. “The process of earning a CLTD designation will help participants expand their outlook on global logistics trends and developments, and bring new ideas to their organisations,” said Richard Ringold, Vice President of Business Development at the Holmes Corporation, introduced the CLTD designation The CLTD program was built around universally relevant content that can be used by large global companies, or at a local level within companies of all sizes. “Businesses can be sure that anyone with a CLTD designation has the tools needed to help reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction and service levels, as certification programmes test real-world expertise, not just the theoretical knowledge as tends to be the case with traditional tertiary qualifications.” According to Ringold the additional value of certification for supply chain practitioners is that it has the power to change a person’s career, the lives of their families, and their personal sense of recognition, worth, and value. In South Africa that CLTD certification will be available through SAPICS – the APICS Exclusive Premier Channel Partner for SubSaharan Africa. “Both APICS and SAPICS are focused on developing people through professionalisation programmes and designations such as the CLTD,” said Jenny Froome, general manager of SAPICS. “The CLTD is for individuals with at least three years of experience or a university Enquiry no: 36 degree,” said Ringold.

The crane delivers its best performance when fitted with the optional 270 LVF 120 hoist which offers industry leading lifting capability and is perfect for high rise buildings, including super tall structures. The 200 kW (270 hp) hoist provides 826 metres of rope capacity, which means that in a single-fall configuration a hook path of 826 metres is possible, while in a two-fall configuration 413 metres of vertical reach is possible. In addition, the winch can reach speeds of up to 254 m/min for better productivity, while the power control function means it can operate off varying power inputs, allowing it to cope with lower power supplies on site. Furthermore, it can automatically adapt to a 50 Hz or 60 Hz power network, making it easier to move to between countries. Customers not requiring the full power of the 270 LVF 120 hoist can choose the 110 kW (150 hp) 150 LVF 120 hoist. This hoist has a drum capacity of 552 m and can produce line speeds of up to 210 m/min. ble financial returns for their requirements. But it is not only new mechanisms and better lift capabilities that are likely to appeal to customers. The crane’s user-friendly design has the luffing mechanism and hoist uniquely mounted inside the counter jib while there is also a large, easily acces-

sible service platform behind the cab, giving technicians a single location from which to access all major service points. Quickly getting the crane into service comes courtesy of a new onboard control system that allows the technician to commission the crane into operation just minutes after assembly is completed. Simple input of the jib length, working height and test load into the crane’s control board allows for a fast and accurate calibration. In terms of working height, Potain’s intelligent mast system gives the crane enhanced flexibility to cope with the challenges of modern high-rise buildings. The crane can be installed on fixing angles or on various sized chassis of 6 m x 6 m, 8 m x 8 m and 10 m x 10 m. For example, a freestanding height of 90 metres can be achieved on a 10 m x 10 m chassis when fitted with 30 metres of jib. And with its design focus on highrise applications, the crane needs only three anchorages to reach a working height of 197 metres when fitted with 30 metres of jib and fixing angle P850A (wind condition FEM 1.001). SA French has been recognised as an Elite Dealer by Potain of France, which means a guarantee of 80% availability of spare parts on first call. And it is this level of aftermarket support that has ensured the success of Potain cranes in Africa. Enquiry no: 37

Supply chain modernisation

NEW perspective on business applications has boosted interest in digital solutions from the enterprise sector. According to Gartner, business priorities have shifted and there is a renewed focus on using technology to compete more effectively, only it’s now digital applications and transformation projects. Cassie Lessing (pictured), managing director, Strato IT Group, said that since launching StratoPOD, a mobile business application for delivery documentation, interest has grown significantly and he anticipates that there will be several new opportunities to transform processes. “As a provider of business system solutions, we have seen an increased uptake and interest in business applications that impact the bottom line,” Lessing said. “It goes beyond simply embracing the digital environment, and is more about finding innovative ways to re-engineer processes with vastly

improved business outcomes. StratoPOD is an innovative proof of delivery app that is fully integrated into the complete supply chain and we are confident that it will continue to change the face of business processes.” He said the supply chain was a great example of a process that was ripe for modernisation. “Having implemented StratoPOD at Toyota’s national parts distribution centre in Gauteng, we have seen first-hand what a digital system and process can do for a previous paperbased environment. By upgrading or utilising innovative technology within your supply chain you not only save time, but also significant budget.” Looking at the bigger picture, Lessing said Gartner had predicted increased spend within the enterprise application software sector to more than $201 billion in 2019. He said this was not impossible and anticipated

that more vertical sectors would embrace digitisation as they recognise the benefits of business applications. Lessing said the StratoPOD app made its United States debut in Washington DC on 25 September at APICS, the premier professional association for supply chain management and the leading provider of research, education and certification programs that elevate supply chain excellence, innovation and resilience. “We participated in SAPICS and were very satisfied with the feedback and results. Not only did we win the best single stand, but we created awareness of the app and its capabilities. This has translated into sales and as a first-to-market app, APICS was a perfect opportunity to launch StratoPOD within the United States.” In support of the US launch, Strato IT has a local team ready to support and grow the app’s user base. Narrow aisles no problem

S

hamrock Handling Concepts have recently welcomed the new Combilift Combi WR4 pedestrian reach stacker to its range of award winning forklifts. The Combi-WR4 is the first purpose-built 4-way pedestrian reach stacker which combines multi-directional travel with features such as a pantograph reach, side shift and titling for carriage for handling long loads and pallets in very narrow aisles. This enables it to work in aisles as narrow as 2.1m. Its unique patented multi-position tiller, electronic power steering and fingertip controls make is easy and effortless to operate. This makes it optimal for use in hardware shops and retail stores. The WR4 was awarded the Ergonomics Award at the United Kingdom Fork Lift Truck Association Awards for Excellence in 2014 and is now available in South Africa. Push button controls rotate the rear wheel parallel to the chassis and back again, reducing the need for leaning, reaching and bending and minimises general manual strain when

picking and placing loads. The Combilift WR range was engineered in response to customer requests for a cost effective, more manoeuvrable, compact unit for the handling of a variety of loads, safely in areas where the public and employees were present. This resulted in the innovation of the only pedestrian reach stacker that can work in an aisle of only 2 metres pallet-to-pallet. Despite the compact design this unit with its superior manoeuvrability is able lift loads to a height of 4.2 metres, with a load capacity of 1450kg. Key Features: • Two Speed Operation: Two customisable speeds which can be tailored to your working environment, allowing you to get the most out of your truck. Furthermore the WR automatically reduces speed when cornering to further improve safety. • Unique Multi-Position Tiller: Which allows the rear wheels to be turned parallel to the chassis at the touch of a button allowing for safer position and easier picking from the aisle. Furthermore this allows the operator to work from the side of the unit rather than behind it giving greater visibility and ensuring the operator doesn’t have to be between the truck and the racking so reducing the chance of crushing or injury. • Anti Crush safety switch: This switch is activated when the operator backs into the shelving and the machine then protects the operator by stopping and moving forwards a safe distance. • Four-Way Option: Allowing you to both block stack and travel sideways with awkward loads, saving time and money.

Moving mega components across continents

T was a daunting logistics challenge by anyone’s standards - moving 105 transformers, weighing between 1 400kg and 8 000kg each, from origin in Germany to their final destination at a coal mine in Zambia. But, according to Detlev Duve (pictured), Managing Director of Dachser South Africa, his company was more than up to the challenge. “Dachser South Africa is wellplaced to take on highly complex logistics challenges given our inhouse specialist knowledge and a well-established global and African network of partners,” Duve said. Complex was certainly an apt description of this project. Not only did the client, a German project engineering company, want each of the transformers imported from Europe, the casing, which protects the transformer during operations, was to bemanufactured and fitted locally in Gauteng. Once the casing had been fitted, the transformer was to be tested at a separate facility prior to being dispatched to its destination mine. Transformers are crucial ‘mega-components’ that function at the heart of a mine’s power or load centre, enabling continued energy transformation to operate the mine’s bulk machinery. Duve said that as well as being able to handle the complexity of multiple stops before destination, his company was also required to provide expert packing and loading knowledge to maintain the integrity of the transformers

and their casings during transportation. This included the temporary removal of protruding parts which are reassembled by the client at destination. “To guarantee an excellent and timeous service requires a dedicated team of multi-talented personnel that are the links in an unbreakable chain from start to finish. This includes Dachser’s ocean imports team and customs department that ensures the shipment from Germany to South Africa goes smoothly,” Duve said. “Next in the chain is our highly experienced local logistics department that handles the loading and movement of the transformers from arrival at customs, to casing fitment in Gauteng, and then to the testbed facility in the Limpopo Province. “The final link in the chain is Dachser South Africa’s road freight exports department that oversees transportation from Limpopo Province to Zambia.” At the time of going to press, 29 transformers were being prepared for transportation, with 12 already in the process of delivery. The transformers are secured on flat rack containers and delivered in a convoy of two at a time via super links to the mine in Zambia. Enquiry no: 42

Sensor solutions for shuttle systems in intralogistics

O

perators in the field of intralogistics are under pressure to achieve greater throughput, while remaining agile and flexible. This necessitates ever more efficient utilisation of space as well as more sustainable use of resources including shuttle solutions. This, in turn, places higher demands on the growing requirements for small but still powerful sensor solutions and automation components. This requirement should also be seen in the context of Industry 4.0, including networked devices. Leuze offers high-end solutions with application know-how in all areas of intralogistics. According to the company, the significant advantage of this is that the solution is from a single source. The growing demands that all intralogistics applications place on sensors are particu-

larly evident in modern shuttle solutions. Shuttles are extremely flexible, dynamic and, not least, also resource-friendly with regard to space utilisation and energy consumption. For systems such as these, reliable, space saving sensors are needed for fine positioning, for the detection of free spaces, presence monitoring and for collision prevention. For all these tasks, Leuze offers suitable solutions that ensure availability and can be easily and quickly mounted and commissioned. Optical distance sensors are used in shuttle systems for compartment occupation checks, collision protection or positioning applications. These smart sensors have a high tolerance to colour and material differences, and offer precise surface and

angle detection making for reliable operation. Whether organic surfaces such as wood, metal or plastics, and whether matt, deep black or glossy, the Leuze ODS 10 and HT 10 optical distance sensors offer a constant switching point. These sensors function reliably even in changing environmental conditions or materials as well as with various object detection angles. This is particularly useful with objects that are not exactly aligned or that are being rapidly transported. As a result, detection errors are avoided and complicated readjustment is eliminated. Also with respect to the electrical connections and the number of I/Os, the Leuze ODS 10 and HT 10 sensors can be adapted to individual application requirements, offering optimum flexibility. Both device models also provide an IO-Link interface ready for Industry 4.0. In this way, diagnostic data can be transferred in real time and alert the user timeously to any impending failure, for example excessive soil-

ing of goods being handled or misalignment. In addition to these measuring distance sensors, miniaturised sensors, such as photoelectric sensors and light diffuse sensors, are preferred for use in shuttles. This is due to the limited available space. Leuze LSR 2 throughbeam photoelectric sensors or Leuze PRK 2 retro-reflective photoelectric sensors are ideal on the outer edge of the shuttle where overhang controls can be implemented simply but very effectively. Leuze PRK 3B retro-reflective photoelectric sensors or Leuze HRT 3B diffuse sensors can be used at the end of aisles or for reference runs. This will allow detection of the reference points with maximum precision using scanning or reflective technology. Leuze HRTL 3B diffuse sensors are predestined for compartment fine positioning, while Leuze 3B series sensors offer a range of unique features and the largest selection of functions available from any device currently available on the market. In addition to the sizes and sensor types already mentioned, Leuze offers an extensive range of products with functions for every application field in intralogistics. These include automation components such as data transmission photoelectric sensors for contactless and wear free optical communication when mechanical systems reach their limits. Leuze’s range of sensing solutions is available in southern Africa from official distributor, Countapulse Controls.distance sensors are used in shuttle systems for compartment occupation checks, collision protection or positioning applications. ontiTech South Africa has designed, manufactured and installed a new generation Solid Woven conveyor belt, Coal Flo, for use in underground coal mining applications. “This four-layer PVC belt illustrates our ability to produce a new generation conveyor belt at a reduced cost through innovation and extensive research and development,” said Avril Botha, Managing Director Conveyor Belt Group at ContiTech Africa. “This is essential in current mining market conditions where it is paramount for suppliers to have the capability to reduce cost to clients without compromising quality of product.” Four rolls of 250 metres of Coal Flo have been installed on South 911 Irenedale Bosjesspruit in Secunda, Mpumalanga. The belt is being used by SASOL in a trunk conveyor belt application. Bosjesspruit is one of five underground coal mines belonging to SASOL, and has 47 km of underground conveyor belting installed. Due the presence of methane gas in underground coal mines, equipment used needs to be flame retardant. With this is mind Coal Flo has been manufactured to comply with specifications contained in the SANS 968:2013 regulations. “We expect the installed product to have a lifespan of four years during which it is expected to convey up to 25 million tons of coal.”

During the test period SASOL will analyse the performance of the belt and make a decision regarding the replacement of existing conveyor belts in its underground coal mining operations with ContiTech’s Coal Flo. Botha said preliminary feedback on the performance of the Coal Flo Belt was favourable, but a long-term evaluation was required for in-depth analysis. This is the first underground Solid Woven Conveyor belt from ContiTech installed at the mine. Botha believes the extensive research and development undertaken to design and manufacture this specialised product will reflect in the long-term analysis data. Enquiry no: 44

D Trucks Southern Africa announced the brand’s top fleet driver at its annual Extra Mile Challenge driver competition recently. Alfred Ngilo (pictured), a driver from Clover in KwaZulu-Natal, walked away with top honours, outperforming 20 other participants to be named the most efficient and productive driver after a day of evaluations and challenges at the Gerotek vehicle testing facility in Pretoria. In the process, Ngilo qualified to represent South Africa in the global Extra Mile Challenge competition that will take place in Japan in November. The event at UD Trucks headquarters in Ageo, Japan, will see drivers from various markets compete in the recently-launched Quester range to determine the champion. “With our brand promise of Going the Extra Mile in mind, we put the challenge to our fleet customers to see whose driver would become the best of the best,” said Gert Swanepoel, Acting Vice President of UD Trucks Southern Africa.

“Truck drivers play such a vital role in the success of any fleet company and in the country’s economy, so it is a privilege to recognise and celebrate these valuable skills in this manner.” Drivers, all using the same UD Quester construction models, were put through their paces in various challenges that measured revenue generated, fuel efficiency, uptime and maintenance costs, as well as safe driving skills. Drivers first had to complete a pre-drive inspection on the vehicles to ensure the roadworthiness and safety of the trucks. Apart from the driving tests, the drivers also had to perform some challenging handling and parking tests, where accuracy and efficiency were key to success. UD Trucks’ experts continuously evaluated each team out on the various tracks, and once the course was completed, technicians downloaded and scored the drivers’ fuel efficiency and driving styles according to information retrieved from the trucks’ on-board telematics system. “The results of the Extra Mile Challenges has bolstered our belief in the level of driving skills available in South Africa. We wish Alfred every success with the global competition in November, we are with you every step of the way,” said Swanepoel. Fit-for-purpose wear solutions

P

ressure on maintenance budgets coupled with the need to increase productivity while reducing unplanned downtime in the mining, quarrying and power sectors of the market presents a unique set of challenges. One of the most obvious ways to cut costs is to look at areas in the plant where excessive wear is occurring and to then apply best practice wear solutions technology to address these issues. This is according to Roland da Silva, global product line manager, wear solutions at FLSmidth, who recently visited the company’s South African operation. Da Silva says that excessive wear has many

possible causes and it is essential to identify the cause before applying a solution. “Different wear technologies cater for different causes within a plant and it is essential to apply a fit-for-purpose solution to ensure the customer will benefit from the intended increase in wear life,” da Silva says. He points to the obvious differences between wear caused by sliding abrasion and that caused by high impact. “Rubber is capable of handling high energy and impact, while ceramic is best for sliding abrasion, however there are instances where both impact and sliding abrasion occur.” He says the Ludoliner from FLSmidth is ideal for this scenario where there is high material flow with moderate impact forces. Waynne Martin, product manager wear solutions at FLSmidth, says the Ludoliner is an easy–to-fit system of bolt-on wear panels that combines the properties of alumina ceramics and rubber resulting in exceptional wear and impact resistance. “Alumina ceramic is well proven in materi-

als handling applications where abrasion is present, and the ceramic/rubber combination means the panels absorb impact and offer the noise reducing properties of the rubber,” Martin says. Significantly, the locally manufactured Ludoliner is available from FLSmidth’s Meshcape Screen Media business. The manufacturing facility based in Edenvale, Johannesburg supports FLSmidth’s greater market, with its primary focus on South and Sub-Saharan Africa This offers end-users shorter lead times as well as a reduction in cost; both of which will be major advantages. Typical applications of Ludoliner panels include screening chutes, conveyor chutes, material deflectors, ball mill discharge chutes and transfer chutes. The panel is manufactured with a mild steel base plate suitable for welding into position, and is available with factory-fitted mounting studs for ease of installation. Martin says that the Ludoliner Impact Wear Panels can be customised for individual cus-

Polypropylene (PP) which can be re-cycled, as a contribution towards reducing carbon footprint. Mouritzen said the pouch-less design is a recommended alternative to PVC pouches, which are presently used to fix control documentation onto bins and plastic crates. Conventional pouches easily disfigure and tear over a period of time and a further disadvantage is adhesive residue can be retained on the pouch when removed, which gathers dirt. Marken label holders allow horizontal and vertical movement of packaging when labels are in position and by inverting the label holder, it can accommodate an A4 sheet vertically. This system enables scanners to read card information easily, eliminating data inaccuracies. Self-tapping screws or blind rivets fix the Marken label holder securely to the bin, using the locating holes provided. Backing plates or washers are used to fix the holder to canvas and PVC material stillage’s. The recommended fixing method of these holders to steel cage and steel frame stillage’s is by cable ties or blind rivets. Homegrown ship loading system makes waves globally

Mobile container tracking

he Transnet Spotlight App enables T its customers to track and trace their containers, assisting with their

day to day planning and increasing operational efficiency, the parastatal said. Available on Android and Apple devices, its current features include “Track and Trace”, which is not only

focused on containers, but also extended to trucks and vessels. Track and Trace extends across all Transnet Terminals and TFR Navis Facilities. “Soon-to-be-released features will enable our customers to be notified of any operational changes in the various Transnet Terminals, from weather conditions to any congestion issues,”

as all existing ancillary equipment, to ensure simple integration with current loading protocols. According to Arlona, benefits of its new Tippler system Include increased loading efficiency by reducing the human element which also leads to reduced health and safety risk to employees. The system offers a maximum, three-minute complete loading cycle and significantly reduces damage to the quayside and skips due to a more controlled landing. The system is extremely versatile and can accommodate a wide variety of dry bulk while offering vastly increased loading rates by improving quantity of skips moved per hour. Mobile Harbour Cranes give port operators the option to move larger skips and as a result more product per skip. This allows for increased commodity turnover and improves project planning by achieving a more consistent loading time. The reduced number of staff per skip means there is less chance of fatigue, resulting in less exposure to health and safety risk and reduced

productivity losses. The Arlona Skip Tippler System is fully customisable to crane specifications. Gearless bulk carriers can be loaded allowing shippers to achieve lower shipping costs due to economies of scale. This means reduced operating costs and eliminates the the need for trimming during loading. According to the company it has received enquiries “from some of the biggest stevedoring companies around the globe”. It said one of these companies carried out a case study compar-

ing the Arlona Skip Tippler System using two mobile cranes with the conventional system using four ship-based cranes. It found that the Arlona system moved an average of 46 skips per hour to the conventional system’s 34. This equated to 1012 tons against 748 tons. Load time was also significantly quicker. While it took 67 hours to load a 50 000 ton vessel using conventional methods, it took just 49 hours using the Arlona system. Enquiry no: 50

Durban company has developed a ship loading system that’s faster, safer and more efficient than traditional skip loading and it’s already attracting interest from big global stevedoring companies. For the past 38 years ports around the world have been using skip loading systems for the loading of dry bulk material. This is a mechanical system of chains that is latched to skip bins by quayside personnel and then dumped into the ships hold using the ships cranes. While this system has proved very reliable, it has some major inefficiencies. It’s slow, inconsistent and laborious which means loading volumes are

limited. Its labour intensive nature also increases the risk of injuries. Skip loading contributes to increased quayside congestion and routinely results in damage to the quayside and equipment. Other drawbacks include environmental and personnel hazards arising from spillages and the added inspection and certification burdens that accompany these risks. With improvements to mobile harbour crane technology and considering these downfalls, Arlona Engineering, which is based in the Durban harbour precinct, was able to improve on the original skip loading system. “Arlona has made use of state of the art hydraulic technology to create a product that combines all the positive aspects of the skip loading system without the numerous drawbacks. A system that adds a new dimension to mobile harbour crane versatility and gives port operators a fast and flexible bulk loading capability with loading rates approaching those of dedicated conveyor loading installations,” a statement from the company said. This system can be customised to suit customer’s specifications as well

Forklift checks enter digital age with new app

ccording to the guidelines of the German Statutory Accident Insurance scheme (DGUV), every industrial truck must be checked for proper operation prior to use. Available immediately, the “preop check” app from Linde Material Handling allows this mandatory inspection of the vehicle to be carried out very conveniently using mobile devices such as smartphones or tablet computers. Instead of using a paper form, the logistics staff can answer the questions regarding the vehicle status on the touch screen. Only if the test is successfully completed can the forklift or warehouse truck be put into operation. The driver can immediately document any damage or leaks by taking a photo. This new function of the connect: fleet management solution contributes to the improved availability and safety of vehicles, since it ensures that this pre-operation check is carried out carefully and damage can be identified in good time. Wireless transmission of the data set as well as its documentation and further processing with the connect: software is also possible. Currently, every fourth new vehicle supplied by Linde is delivered with the connect: fleet management solution. In addition, a growing number of customers are choosing to retrofit their fleets. The modular connect: solution offers a range of benefits for fleets both large and small. It simplifies the management of vehicle and driver data,

ensures greater operational safety and lower damage rates, identifies potential for optimization and enables needs-based maintenance. The connect: app using Android-based mobile devices also solves a challenge that those in charge of fleets are faced with day after day: namely, to ensure that the vehicle status is checked prior to use. Using the app, the vehicle is activated only if the employee has not detected any defects during the inspection of the truck and has answered all the relevant questions. Then the forklift truck can be started. The “yes” or “no” questions the drivers have to answer concern, for example, the tyre pressure and tyre tread, operating fluids, the battery status and evidence of external damage. To take account of the individual circumstances of the fleet and its operational use, the fleet manager can formulate these questions freely and change them at any moment. In addition, it is possible to set up a reporting function. When the driver has completed his check, the app will then automatically send a report to the fleet manager and – if requested – to a Linde service technician. Should the driver detect visible external damage to the forklift or warehouse truck, he can also be asked to take a photo of it using his smartphone or tablet camera so that it can then be sent along with the report.

In case of serious damage, the truck can be restarted only when a repair has been confirmed and the vehicle has been released for use by the fleet manager. To eliminate any language barriers along the way, there is a choice of various user languages for both the queries and the reports. In addition to Bluetooth, Linde Material Handling now also offers WLAN as a transmission standard for the data transfer between vehicle and the connect: database. So the customer has the option to disconnect the data communication between different systems in his production or warehouse environments, thus avoiding interference. Here Linde applies a high security standard and safeguards data transmission using common encryption algorithms. Moreover, any authorized user can activate a regular, automatic data backup. The key asset to any good dealership is good, well-trained, right-attitude staff,” he said. According to a statement issued by FAW, Wiggill has a friendly demeanour, but is uncompromising on cost and quality control, with all the checks and balances followed to the ‘T’. “This is especially so with workshop activities. His best cost-control philosophy is to do the job right the first time and never waste, neither time nor materials,” the statement said. It is for this very reason that VKB chose to purchase their latest FAW fleet addition, a FAW 28.380FT from Juan Wiggill. Bryan Boshoff, Logistics Manager of VKB said that not only were their FAW vehicles giving them very good fuel consumption figures, but they were also lowering total cost of operations, and providing great value for money. VKB’s fleet includes the FAW 7.130 (4-ton), the newer FAW 8.140 (5-ton) and a number of FAW 28.330 (13.5-ton) units. “This is an outstanding transport partner and Juan Wiggill had gone ‘over and above’ expectations, especially when he loaned me a FAW truck while mine was in for repair, just so that I’d have no downtime on my own transport contracts,” Boshoff said. CHEMICAL & ALLIED INDUSTRIES

Total lifecycle solutions for oil, gas and chemical sectors

C

lients in the oil, gas and chemicals sectors are on the lookout for smarter, more efficient ways to produce, process and deliver products to market, as well as assistance with environmental and sustainability considerations. That’s the view of Aecom’s Samuel du Rand, who said the company offered comprehensive services to these sectors over the entire lifecycle. While Aecom has a strong presence in Africa, it is also one of the largest multinationals in the world, enjoying strong relationships with most of the major oil and gas companies. “As a company, we have a very good understanding of the industry and its role-players. Due to Aecom’s size and diverse nature, we are one of a few companies that can offer a

M

total solution,” said Du Rand, the company’s Africa Oil and Gas Business Line Leader. “Aecom believes a strong local industry that delivers services from within each country is essential to sustained success. It is this understanding that will allow us to add great value to the development of the industry on the continent.” Du Rand said the biggest factors impacting on the industry at present was the oil and gas price, in addition to technological development and the costs associated with alternative energy sources. This includes the development of large global unconventional resources such as shale gas, which will impact the long-term development of new reserves. Global oil and gas dynamics, including the shifting political landscape within the oil-rich regions of the Middle East and other areas, will also have a major impact. Du Rand predicted that there was likely to be an increased focus on previously untapped and unexplored reserves in Africa, especially Southern and Eastern Africa. Major oil and gas companies will look to expand their reserves in Africa as an alternative supply to the known markets of the Middle East and Russia. This, in turn, will enhance trade and investment on the continent. “Inter-country infrastructure such as pipelines between Uganda and Kenya or Tanzania,

Mozambique and South Africa, for example, are typically very large investments. However, these are game changers in terms of development and macro-economic growth. Unfortunately, in Africa, as well as many other parts of the world, the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves has come with conflict.” Thus developing and implementing legislation and regulations at an early enough stage to adequately address the interests of African countries, local residents and international oil companies is essential for the success of the industry. Du Rand pointed to numerous global instances of the success of this approach. “Norway is often used as an example of a country where wealth obtained from reserves was well-managed. Unfortunately, the development of regulations and preparing for development itself can also lead to long delays in decision-making that often hampers the feasibility of projects.” Looking at oil-and-gas opportunities in Africa, Du Rand stressed that major discoveries in countries like Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda had generated a lot of excitement and interest in the region. “The development of new reserves has been slow, while the lack of enabling infrastructure such as roads, airports and ports requires a lot of time and major investment in order to be resolved.

“However, regulatory requirements are being addressed, with Mozambique, for example, being close to ready for development. Unfortunately, the low oil price is stalling many developments at the moment. It will also be interesting to see how international oil companies will decide to develop new reserves in Africa, and how the cost of creating enabling infrastructure here compares with other parts of the world.” South Africa currently has little proven oiland-gas reserves, and therefore remains a net importer of these resources. There is great interest in shale gas in the Karoo, as well as other potential oil-and-gas reserves on and offshore of South Africa. “The current regulatory environment is not friendly to investment in exploration, while there are a lot of environmental challenges to overcome. Significant development of the industry in the short term is probably unlikely. Programmes such as the gas-to-power initiative by the Department of Energy may stimulate development going forward,” Du Rand Enquiry no: 54 said.

Be aware of atmospheric hazards in confined spaces

any fatalities occur each year while working in confined spaces, with the majority of deaths caused by atmospheric related hazards. “This is one area in the industry that really gets neglected as far as safety is concerned with using oxygen, fuel gases and equipment in confined spaces,” said Hennie van Rhyn, Afrox’s Application Development Manager - Cutting, Heating and Safety. A confined space can be defined as an area that has limited or restricted access, or an open vessel or structure that requires ladders, stairs or other means of entrance or exit. Examples include boilers, pipelines, columns, silos, process vessels, ducts, furnaces, rail tankers, cold boxes, pits, drains, manholes, vaults, chutes and hoppers. Confined spaces are generally opened when inspection, cleaning or maintenance needs to be performed, such as pre-heating for a specific welding application, inspecting of welds, repairing trays in a distillation column, replacing linings in a storage tank, or repairing leaks in a heat exchanger, boiler or chiller coils in a rail car. Extreme caution must be taken before any oxy/fuel or welding application is used in any confined space, advised Van Rhyn. “Oxygen deficiency occurs at less than 19.5%. This will cause difficulty in breathing that could lead to loss of consciousness and even death. “Oxygen enrichment greater than 23% will accelerate combustion in the presence of an open flame or other source of ignitions. Any fuel gas leak could create an explosive mixture with air in the confined space, and any ignition or open flame will cause serious explosions.”

He strongly recommended that only fuel gases with a density less than air should be used for any pre-heating, cutting, brazing or soldering applications in confined spaces, such as acetylene. “Acetylene features a particular property of high value with a density of 1.095 kg/m3 (at 15 degrees C/1 bar). This means acetylene is about 10% lighter than air. If it should escape inadvertently, it will rise and disappear in the atmosphere. Any fuel gas mixed with air could form an explosive mixture, while fuel gases that are heavier than air will sink to the lowest level and increase the risk of asphyxiation,” Van Rhyn said. Using acetylene for hot work processes

means higher cutting speeds, faster start-up and pre-heating, concentrated heat input and therefore significant time saving. New technology enables the use of acetylene with air (no oxygen) for pre-heating processes which is totally safe, and eliminating the risk pf any flashbacks occurring. Acetylene and air burners are particularly suitable for pre-heating in welding or for the drying of the region near the weld or heat affected zone. These flame gases are very dry in comparison with other fuel gases like LPG. As acetylene has approximately 30% less moisture content, the possibility of hydrogen induced cracking in the weld or heat affected zone is Enquiry no: 55 reduced.

Waterproofing admixtures for big waterworks project

onstruction chemicals specialist Chryso Southern Africa supplied its CWA 10 integral waterproofing admixture at the Temba Waterworks project undertaken by Group Five Civil Engineering. The readymix supplier for the project was Chromecrete. Deon Klopper, technical sales consultant Chryso Southern Africa, said that the contract award vindicated a lengthy testing process that ultimately resulted in “a few mixes and products” being approved. The most important in this regard, he said, was Chryso CWA 10, an admixture formulated specifically for water retaining structures. The total concrete work on the project was

17 000 m³, of which 14 000 m³ contained Chryso CWA 10 in the mix. Klopper explained that when CWA 10 is added to concrete a chemical reaction with water results in the formation of long, narrow crystals that fill in the pores, capillaries and hairline cracks of a concrete mass. “The crystals effectively block the pores rendering the concrete dense and waterproof, as well as maintenance free and durable,” Klopper said. CWA 10 is used mainly in concrete subjected to hydrostatic conditions. The dosage rate is typically 0.8% of the cementitious content of an approved mix design. CWA 10 is compatible with other admixtures and supplementary cementitious materials and will not affect the workability or entrained air content. “It transforms an entire concrete structure into an impermeable water barrier with lasting integral waterproofing properties,” he said. Chryso Southern Africa manufactures and distributes two integral waterproofing products, Chryso CWA 10 and Chryso Fuge B. These products are added directly to the concrete mix at the time of batching. “Integral waterproofing is therefore a permanent solution as it is distributed uniformly throughout the concrete and not just on the surface,” Klopper said. The major benefit is that it reduces the permeability of concrete structures, which means that the concrete is more durable. Concrete with a low permeability can significantly reduce the risk of frost damage, acid and sulphate attack, steel corrosion, alkali aggregate reaction and efflorescence. Klopper said that Chryso’s integral waterproofing admixtures all reduce water absorp-

It combines with components of the concrete, effectively forming deposits which line the walls of the pores and capillaries and as a result thereof water ingress is effectively eliminated. It is mostly used in non-hydrostatic conditions. Although not classified as an integral waterproofer, Chryso Pareflo 20 is used in bricks, blocks and roof tiles to specifically reduce efflorescence caused by moisture that conveys calcium hydroxide through the capillaries in porous concrete to the surface. Reliable handheld gas detection device

he new generation IP68 rated Sentient handheld unit is widely regarded as one of the most cost effective, sophisticated

and low maintenance gas detection device in the mining industry today. This hi-tech instrument, available from Booyco Electronics, was developed specifically to improve safety in underground mining and in any confined spaces in surface plants. It is the first multi-gas instrument in South Africa that also measures relative humidity as a standard offering. The Sentient is also available with fire patrol capabilities. Distinguished by its bright red seal, the Fire Patrol Sentient is inserted into outstations located in specific areas underground, where it records date, time, gas and humidity measurements. A downloading network configuration is capable of gathering information from up to 500 Sentient devices in a matter of minutes. All this equipment is connected via a

network to a downloading server, where specialised BEAMS software enables various reports to be generated, such as detailed information on gas detected in the underground environment, peak values, TWA values, pre-shift tested values, calibration reports and “no movement reports”. BEAMS software is web-based, making it possible to email these reports to relevant personnel automatically. The low maintenance Sentient has no buttons; instead an innovative “tap” sensor ensures that the instrument remains watertight. Another unique feature is a “drop protection” capability that automatically switches the sensor off if the instrument is dropped, reducing possible maintenance time and costs. Enquiry no: 58

Chinese bullet-train lubrication solution available in SA

lubrication solution from Royal Purple, distributed exclusively in South Africa by wear-control specialist Filter Focus, has been specified for the flagship China Star bullet train project. The China Star project, which aims to develop China’s own bullet-train technology, was inaugurated in 2001 by the State Development Planning Commission and Ministry of Railways, in conjunction with the Zhuzhou Locomotive Company, a statement from Filter Focus said. The bullet trains will be powered by 1 250 kW motors from Zhuzhou that use speciallyinsulated, resin-coated roller bearings supplied by NSK Bearing Company of Japan. It is essential that the bearings be insulated in order to prevent damage to the raceways and rolling elements caused by electrical arcing. Each motor incorporates a 170 mm (NH219) grease-lubricated bearing and a 280 mm (NU326) thrust bearing, lubricated by the same oil as the drive gear. The lubricants for the traction motors were selected based on tests carried out at NSK’s dedicated traction test facility in Tokyo. A total of 26 different greases were evaluated, including the latest formulations for high-speed bearings. The greases were subjected to high temperatures and speeds in order to detect any leaking, as well as to ascertain adhesion and grease life. Based on its superior performance during the testing, a general-purpose lithium complex grease thickener was selected as

the standard traction motor bearing grease for the China Star project. However, the greased motor bearing was subsequently found to overheat at speeds in excess of 160 kph, resulting in high vibrations and reduced bearing life. Despite various adjustments being made to the traction motor, the NSK team was unsuccessful in arriving at a mechanical solution. According to Filter Focus, the breakthrough came when the team focused on the grease itself, which provides a thin film of lubricant that the bearing depends on for its proper operation. It was suspected that the grease’s drop point was being exceeded, the temperature at which the thickener in the grease can no longer hold the lubricating oil in place. Thus the oil runs out of the bearing, leaving only the thickener behind. This resulted in extensive damage to the bearing. The China Locomotive Research Institute began a global search for a grease that would allow the traction motor to run at higher speeds. It eventually settled on Royal Purple’s Ultra-Performance Grease No. 2, an aluminium complex EP grease. This is a highperformance synthetic grease with advanced additive chemistry to reduce bearing temperature and vibration. Royal Purple was subsequently asked to recommend lubricants for the other components of the traction motor. Enquiry no: 57

Agrico’s customers are supported by 26 strategically located branches in Southern Africa offering advice and all irrigation products,” a statement from Agrico said. “The acquisition means that customers will benefit from a broader product range, stronger logistics and greater purchasing power. Finance terms will now also be offered on selected product lines.” Agrico’s CEO Walter Andrag said agriculture is a vital contributor to the country’s economy and South Africa’s farmers need world class irrigation systems. “Our strategy is to set the standard for optimal water solutions, through

organic growth and acquisitions. Our purchase of Dripco, with its technical expertise, strong management and focus on excellent customer service aligns perfectly with this strategy.” Andrag welcomed the team and said it was Agrico’s intention to retain all the Dripco employees and to continue to grow and expand the combined business. ed at the Federal-Mogul Motorparts – Braking Division’s manufacturing plant in Prospecton, Durban, near one of the busiest ports in the Southern Hemisphere. Test Centre General Manager Mervin Paideya said that the main driver for pursuing the accreditation was the interests of safety in the

South African automotive braking sector, as all friction materials have to comply with local braking regulations (SANS 20090:2010). These have been established by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specification (NRCS), which is affiliated to the Department of Trade and Industry. “We needed to prepare a policy system that had to be in place and implemented in terms of our testing requirements,” Paideya said. The Prospecton Test Centre now joins the top league of similar FederalMogul facilities globally, as well as representing a significant expansion of the OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturer’s) testing capabilities locally. “It definitely also creates additional local capacity, as there are only two test centres in South Africa accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.” Paideya said the flood of imported automotive components had raised questions about the certification and

accreditation of such international manufacturers. “It is the mandate of the NRCS to ascertain if all such imported products conform to all of the necessary requirements. We therefore decided to take the lead by extending our own testing capabilities in this regard.” In future, this will enable an efficient compliance testing process that could be of great assistance to the NRCS teams based here. While the main aim of the Prospecton Test Centre is to ensure that Federal-Mogul itself is compliant in terms of all the regulations, it will also commence testing for the open market in the near future. “I think that while we still have to investigate what the standards are in the SADC region (the Southern African Development Community), our long-term goal is to introduce this testing capability into the broader Southern African market,” Paideya said. Excavation work will always have a number of unknowns, and this project is no exception; issues have been encountered in nearly every element of the bulk earthworks. In meeting these challenges, Profica’s

approach is to tackle issues head-on and to rigorously keep communication flowing between the client, the professional team and the main contractor. “Profica encourages the team to focus on the big picture and to work towards that. It is imperative to keep everyone on-board so that the project can be successfully completed,” said Ferraz. Another major construction project currently in design phase is the expansion and alteration of Gateway Shopping Centre. Profica are the project managers for this initiative which will include the addition of approximately 22 000 square metres of new GLA, alterations to over 18 000 square metres GLA, and more than 1 200 new parking bays.

he Concrete Manufacturers Association Certification Services (CMA CS) has undertaken its first complete initial assessments and certified a number of products on behalf of its maiden client, Bosun Bricks. Initial assessments were undertaken to test compliance with SANS specifications on a number of different precast concrete products that are manufactured by the company and that need to be certified to meet engineering and architectural specifications. The CMA CS Mark of Approval is the first non-SABS mark to be used in the concrete industry since legislation was changed to allow multiple certification authorities to undertake certification of SANS standards. Born from the need to professionalise the certification of products within the precast concrete industry, CMA CS was established under the wing of the voluntary members’ association for the industry, the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA). This was in response to undue delays in the issuing of SANS certification from the current certification body that had the potential to harm member companies whose products needed certification in order to meet customer requirements. Speaking on acceptance of the Mark of Approval, David Wertheim Aymes, managing director of Bosun Bricks said that adherence to standards is critical and that the establishment of CMA CS is a step in the right direction for the concrete industry. “At the end of the day, standards are all about putting a peg in the ground as a measure of what is acceptable and what is not. “SANS specifications are compiled by industry experts who deem them suitable for the type of product being manufactured. Thereafter it is the role of the certification agency to measure and certify that a product meets these standards, where after a Mark of Approval can be issued as proof to customers and end-users. “We are pleased to have been the first to be certified and found the process to be similar to our previous SABS audits, but much more in depth. The actual audits took three days rather than a few hours that we were used to. The auditor was comprehensive and the process from start to finish was considerably quicker than it had been traditionally,” said Wertheim Aymes. He added that Bosun Bricks would heavily advertise its newly acquired Mark of Approval in the media, on packaging and all other areas of business where it needs to be visible. CMA CS general manager Christo van Zyl, concluded that the new certification process also marked an improvement over traditional certification as it is completely comprehensive, is undertaken by system auditors with industry knowledge and is done timeously to avoid manufacturers losing out on deals while waiting months for certification that should be done in a matter of days Enquiry no: 63 or weeks.

atch was responsible for the process design of an anaerobic digestion pilot plant at eThekwini Water and Sanitation’s Southern Wastewater Treatment Plant in Merebank, Durban. The plant is unique in that it can accommodate both domestic and industrial waste streams. The high percentage of industrial waste coming in meant that eThekwini required the pilot plant to have two waste trains, from two industrial sewers and one domestic one, said Hatch Chemical Engineer - Water, Wade Swannell. “The reasoning behind the pilot plant was to test the ideal operating conditions for the digestion of the particular sludge that needs to be processed here, as Merebank differs from traditional domestic wastewater treatment works,” Swannell said. In terms of the general process flow, there is a continuous feed into a flow tank. This is pumped proportion-

ally to primary settling tanks so as to simulate the diurnal flow of the sewer. Sludge thickeners process the sludge further, following which it is pumped to digesters. “All the while there is a constant overflow going back to the sewer,” Swannell said. The main challenge associated with

the project has been its small size, with a nominal capacity of 14 m3/ hour. “It is difficult to size equipment that small, which is why we opted for a semi-batch process design. Despite being small, we still put in the same design effort as with a larger project, especially as it has quite a complex control system.” The pilot plant has already been commissioned, and is currently in the one-year contractor’s defects liability period. “While our technical role is now at completion, we are looking to stay involved from a research-anddevelopment perspective, as we are quite interested in the results that will come out of the pilot plant.” Swannell said the pilot plant was expected to provide valuable data on the dual treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater, which poses a particular challenge in water-stressed Enquiry no: 65 South Africa.

Red-y to Rock tough, portable compressors

Correct diagnostics save costs

ncorrect diagnosis of fuel injection systems is causing fleet operators substantial losses, and Reef Fuel Injection Services (RFI) is concerned that this not as apparent as it should be to industry. Modern fuel injection systems require that fuel be delivered at a specific volume and pressure. Because the tolerances for fuel pressure variations are small it is extremely important that a logical series of diagnostic tests are performed to ensure an accurate diagnosis when problems occur. Warren Hauser, operations manager at RFI, says it is essential that diagnostics are conducted on professional test equipment capable of accurately examining the performance of fuel injectors and injection systems. “It is only by doing the relevant test regime on equipment that is regularly calibrated that the customer can be assured of an accurate report,” Hauser says. “And it is this diagnostics data that is use to effect reliable repair work to injectors or complete fuel

injection systems.” RFI is an experienced accredited fuel injection system remanufacturer and through ongoing investment in equipment and personnel has established its position of one of few such companies that can service all five leading diesel fuel injection systems – Bosch, Caterpillar, Delphi, Denso and Stanadyne. RFI operates state-of-the-art electronic diagnostic equipment which allows its technicians to access fuel systems on vehicle to check and diagnose. Hauser says that it is not only access to the latest technology that provides the quality service, but also to skilled technicians that have extensive product knowledge. “This facilitates the accurate diagnosis of all fuel injection problems.” Commenting on the issue of incorrect diagnostics, Hauser says it is a worrying scenario and can be attributed largely to situations where a dealer is ill-equipped and does not

I have skilled fuel injection system technicians, but still does the diagnostic work. “These injectors are then sent to a third party repairer, and we have had several instances where we had to assist customers who have found themselves in a predicament where the fuel injection system problem was misdiagnosed, resulting in wasted time and money.” Hauser says the most important advantage that RFI offers is that it is a single source remanufacturer where the diagnostics and the remanufacture are done in the same facility. “Most significant to the customer is the access to rapid information, the responsiveness shown through ongoing communication and interaction with the fleet owner.” Enquiry no: 66

EVERY PART MATTERS

nternational construction equipment manufacturer Chicago Pneumatic recently launched Red Rock, its toughest ever range of portable air compressors. According to the company, what makes the new range so tough is the incredibly durable polyethylene canopy that is supplied as standard on all ten models. “With the Red Rock range, our portable compressors have taken a massive leap forward in durability,” Manu Claes, spokesperson for portable compressors at Chicago Pneumatic. “To show just how tough the canopies are, we threw everything at them, from bricks to logs, and are happy to say they passed the test with flying colours. As a result, operators can rest assured the compressors are highly protected, ensuring performance over time and increased longevity,” Claes said. “The canopy is as tough as it is lightweight,” said Jacques van der Westhuizen, Business Development Manager for Chicago Pneumatic in South Africa. “Remarkably these compressors weigh less than 750kg and two of the models in the range feature a built-in generator as standard and still weigh below the 750kg mark.” Thanks to their compact design, the compressors boast a small footprint. As a result they take up less space on the job site and can be simply transported on a single truck. The compressors can also be easily and conveni-

ently towed by a standard passenger vehicle. The company said the new compressors are easy and affordable to maintain requiring a simple service every 500 hours or once a year. “The machines are also aston-

ishingly quick to service; a simple-to-follow process ensures that service can be done in a matter of minutes instead of hours and no special tools are required,” a statement from the company said, The Red Rock range is available in working pressures between 7-12 bar and flow ranges between 2-5 m3/min. Combined with low and rapid maintenance, the company claims the machines as ideal for extended periods of use in the most challenging and rugged construction sites around the world. “The introduction of this remarkable range enables us to offer a complete solution to portable diesel air compressors required in the local construction industry,” said Van der Westhuizen. oof truss specialists LCP Roofing have developed an integrated mobile application for enhanced, more secure completion and processing of the SANS10400 A19 certificate for a building’s structural components. The A19 certificate, which is a pivotal support document in the issuance of a completion certificate for a structure, is issued by an engineer and confirms that the structure in question has been correctly completed in line with the original design intent and in accordance with national building standards. “The reality is that for the most part, your roof inspector, who works for an engineer, declares that he is satisfied with the structure to said engineer, who then signs off the form for the A19 certificate,” said Lyndsay Cotton, LCP Roofing General Manager. “While this is common practice and, by most accounts, completely above board, the problem arises when the engineers that sign off on these forms are not experts in the roofing field.” Taking a proactive stance against ‘drive-by’ inspections and the consequences of signing off on roofing structures not designed or erected according to National Building Regulations, LCP Roofing have developed LCP Inspecta, a mobile application digitally integrated with a digital signature platform for a watertight, digitally

encrypted paper trail that brings the A19 certificate into the future. “We developed LCP Inspecta with the hope to eradicate illegal inspections, not only to ensure the safety and security of our clients and theirs, but to play our part in making our industry better by making sure that what has been designed and erected has been done so correctly,” said Cotton. “This is also about making inspections cheaper and easier to do; it’s about shaking up the status quo, innovating, doing things differently, better.” LCP Inspecta offers the user a three-part digital form that confirms the inspector, system supplier, and truss fabricator’s undertaking from design to inspection of a given structure, with all parties’ signatures, unique submission identification and a 256 bit encryption date and paper trail stamp. This system confirms by whom and according to what codes the roof structure was designed, whether it has been designed according to SANS codes, that the values of the plates have been manufactured correctly from a design perspective, that the roof trusses have been manufactured to standard and that the erected structure has been properly inspected. All LCP Inspecta submissions have ID certificates with unique encryption codes for ultimate security. “LCP Inspecta is a product of LCP Roofing’s mission to put a stop to illegal roof inspections, to protect our customers and their customers, and to elevate not only the standards, but the standing of the local timber construction industry by making roofing inspections easier, better and faster,” said Cotton.

New energy saving valves

MC Pneumatics recently launched a new version of its VEX3 Power Valve series which it says will ensure greater energy efficiencies and increased flexibility. “As part of SMC’s constant pursuit for custome r satisfaction achieved by listening to and responding to customer’s needs, SMC has modified the 3-port 3-position power valve VEX3, used to control actuators,” a statement from the company said. It claims these modifications allow for improved cost savings and versatility by offering greater energy efficiency and added handling flexibility thanks to the addition of new manual override options, which have been added to the existing non-locking push type. The new 3/3 way VEX3 series features additional benefits to the existing conventional 2/2 way, 3/2 way and 5/3 way Power Valves. Compared to its predecessor, the VEX3 is not only smaller in size, but when added to the existing benefit of fewer components required per circuit, it delivers on space and cost savings. Achieving a flow rate of up to 3300 l/min, the VEX3, with its

three positions, makes it possible to perform intermediate stops of cylinders up to 125 mm bore size or to change the speed of cylinders up to 200 mm bore size. What’s more, two valves can be connected to a double acting cylinder, controlling speeds, slow stopping, acceleration and deceleration with nine different valve position combinations. Product Manager for SMC Pneumatics, Brian Abbott said, “While the functions of the VEX3 can be performed by an electric actuator, this new Power Valve offers our customers greater force and flexibility while being more cost efficient to purchase and operate”. “It is also another great example of the SMC team working closely with its customers to deliver a product that improves productivity and reduces overall production costs. “Further savings are achieved in vacuum applications when suction or release of the workpiece is not required, as the power valve can be set to the intermediate position where there is no air movement and energy is not being wasted,” Enquiry no: 69 Abbott said.

Stop lightning from killing your borehole pump

A closer view of the wiring and surge protection products in the junction box

T

he consequences of a blown borehole pump are catastrophic and far-reaching. Added to the initial financial outlay of up to R60 000 to replace a pump are the effects of not being able to water crops and livestock. “A scenario like this can be easily avoided through the purchasing

and correct installation of quality surge arresters,” said Paul van As, Low Voltage Divisional Manager at Surgetek. The costs of a typical surge protection installation for a borehole pump is about R3 000. Borehole pumps that do not have surge protection and proper earthing are often destroyed by induced lightning travelling through the earth. “The energy from a bolt of lightning that has struck the ground spreads into it and travels through it, in concentric circles in the form of magnetic force,” Van As warned. Boreholes are often sleeved with steel to maintain well integrity and prevent fall of ground. These steel sleeves act like an earth rod. “Once the energy from a lightning strike makes contact with the sleeve, the energy runs down the pump power cable to the pump unit,” said Van As.

Research indicates this energy measures hundreds of thousands of volts. Pump motors operate on voltages between 230 V and 400 V and their circuit boards operate on 5 V. When struck by lightning these stand no chance against the level of energy in the induced lightning. Van As advised that surge arresters be installed as close to a borehole as possible. Arresters should be installed on either side of the power transformer in the surface junction box as well as the pump controller. “In addition, it is important that the electrical earth, the surge arrester earthing and the borehole sleeve, if metallic, are all interconnected to ensure potential equalisation. Surge arresters in any application should be checked on regular basis – particularly after thunderstorms.” Enquiry no: 72

xcellent non-slip characteristics are just one of several advantages claimed for the Mentis Die-Line range of positive grip pressed-section walkway product. Available in three forms planks, mats and walkways - this locally manufactured walkway grating has a positive serration which ensures good traction in all walking and working surfaces, even where mud, water, grease oil and detergents are present and could cause slippery or hazardous underfoot conditions. The serration on the grating applies irrespective of the direction in which a person is walking. Produced by Andrew Mentis, Die-Line is easy to handle and erect minimal welding or clipping required, reducing the need for specialised installation labour, said Elaine van Rooyen, marketing manager at the company “Another important advantage that Die-Line offers is its high strength-to-weight ratio as this ensures an optimum loading bearing capacity and therefore the safety of all who use the walkway system,” she said. “The range also ensures high light penetration for further safety benefits and the sections align perfectly for enhanced aesthetics.” The sections are designed for longitudinal span, obviating unnecessary steel support and

heavy kick plates, both factors contributing greatly to enhanced cost effectiveness. Transverse loading is transferred to the integrated kick flats (toe boards) which are provided with two slotted holes at each end and positioned around the neutral axis. Pressed angle splice plates fit on the outside and into the returned top edges, and M10 bolts and nuts are provided for easy installation. The Die-Line products, together with all the necessary accessories including bolts, washers, nuts, fish plates, jointing channels, saddle clamps, splice plates and mesh clips, can be used for work platforms, catwalks, conveyor walkways, and stair treads. New sensors for 3-dimensional object measurement

SSTech’s German agency Wenglor, has developed sensors that can scan and evaluate objects in three dimensions. This generation of 70 models of the weCat3D Profile Sensors allows data to be either read out directly as measured values or used for rapid further processing of the point cloud. 3D calculation of volume is of great value in industries such as food, machinery manufacturing, woodworking, electronics, automotive and pharmaceutical where precise compliance to weight and geometric specifications measurements are demanded. The weCat3D series works with a visual field width within a range of 30mm to 1300mm in the horizontal X-axis and is capable of detecting differences in height of just 2.0 µm within the Z working range at a rate of 3.6 to

12 million measuring points per second. Available laser classes (1, 2M, 3R, 3B) and two selectable types of light (red, blue) result in a diverse product portfolio of more than 70 models. With a weight of just 300 g and a space-saving housing of 90 x 36 x 64 mm, the model weCat3D MLSL scans as many as 3.6 million measuring points/sec, has an output range of up to 4000 Hz, as well as a resolution of down to 22 µm in visual field width X and down to 3.3 µm in working distance Z. The model weCat3D MLWL scans up to 12 million measuring points/sec, has an output rate of up to 6000 Hz, visual field widths from 30 to 1300 mm

and high resolution down to 17 µm in visual field width X and down to 2.0 µm in working distance Z. Due to this extremely high resolution in the Z and X directions, the sensors can detect the smallest components in the micron range such as those used in PCB assembly. The special algorithms allow the sensors to generate powerful measuring signals and top quality profile data that is not even impaired by glossy, reflective surfaces such as metals. The high dynamic range ensures that objects can be precisely measured almost independent of colEnquiry no: 75 our and brightness.

iviero Building scooped three awards in the 2016 Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) National Safety Competition, two of them for projects in KZN.

Brad Boertje, the company’s managing executive, said the achievement was the result of exceptional attention to detail and meticulous care taken by Liviero site teams in their work areas.

between R10 million and R25 million. The MBSA National Safety Competition follows on from regional events in which Liviero also excelled, Boertje said. The company’s KwaZulu-Natal sites won five regional awards in this stage of the competition. In addition to the many siterelated awards, Liviero Plant was placed second in the regional competition for plant and

storage yards. The annual MBSA safety awards ceremony was held at the International Convention Centre in Durban, during the MBSA’s annual congress. “We at Liviero are extremely proud of the efforts of all staff and stakeholders in consistently setting the highest standards in occupational health and safety,” Boertje said. Innovative dynamic stabiliser cover

pneumatic systems. Inflated, the cushions form a smooth, streamlined cover over the fin box opening, a shape that has been shown by computer modelling as well as real life tests to reduce drag by around 90 percent. When the stabilizer fin is to be extended or retracted, air is released from the cushions by opening the valve. The cushions are then deflated by the water pressure outside the hull, creating room for the fin’s movement. When deployment or housing is complete, the cushions can be reinflated. Control of the cover is fully integrated into the stabilizer fin control systems, requiring no additional action by the crew. The DSC is constructed from a highly durable Kevlar mesh coated with neoprene rubber which provides extra protection from barnacles and other marine life that may accumulate on the fin. The DSC cover will be available as an option for new vessels using all sizes of SKF retractable fin stabilizers and it is also possible to retrofit the system on existing fin installations. t the SMM 2016 trade fair (Hamburg, 6-9 September), SKF launched its new SKF Dynamic Stabilizer Cover, designed to reduce drag and improve the efficiency of passenger vessels equipped with SKF retractable fin stabilizers type S and type Z. The use of fin stabilizers to control rolling motions has resulted in significant improvements to passenger comfort and safety in a wide range of vessels, from yachts to cruise ships, ferries as well as commercial vessels. Retractable designs, such as the

SKF retractable fin stabilizer type S and type Z, reduce the flow resistance significantly. Now SKF engineers have found a smart way to further reduce the flow resistance associated with this design, while retaining all its other benefits. When a vessel is in motion, the fin box opening in the side of the hull creates turbulence, increasing drag on the vessel. With operating efficiency posing a high priority for customers, SKF wanted to find a way to minimise the resistance even more and thereby decrease fuel consumption. The solution is a deceptively simple, pneumatically operated design. The new SKF Dynamic Stabilizer Cover (DSC) uses two specially shaped air cushions, fitted to the top and bottom of the fin box with small steel rails. In normal operation, the cushions are inflated using compressed air from the vessel’s existing
