Fighting Breast Cancer ■ The Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team ladies (and gents) of Freemasons Victoria take on the challenge every year to raise funds, and awareness, for those affected by breast cancer. Last year the 2012 Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team ladies, led by the Grand Master's wife, Kerry Jones, collectively raised $80,000 (with the assistance of the Board of Benevolence). These funds were distributed between; ■ Epworth Freemasons Oncology Department - for a SONOS sound system, Accommodation Support Grants and Syringe Pump Drivers. ■ Think Pink Foundation - for a Wig Salon, ‘Ladies Day of Indulgence’ and the ‘Supporting Blokes’ programs. This year the challenge is out to raise even more funds to donate to: ■ Epworth Freemasons Hospital, to upgrade the Oncology Department's Waiting Room and Palliative Care Unit. ■ Think Pink Foundation, to continue to support the Wig Salon and various programs, including the "Back to Work" program. ■ Some rural communities will also benefit from the funds raised this year, The first initiatives to launch the Think Pink fundraising for 2013 are; the Big Pink Party, the Think Pink with Freemasons Victoria Facebook page and the Freemasons Think Pink Ribbon. Please communicate the names and contact details of attendees from your Lodge, to District Co-Ordinator Peter Harris before Friday, September 20. Wardens, as well as current Masters and PM's are encouraged to attend.
Ceremonial Instruction ■ There are benefits to be derived from attendance at an Exemplification of Degree Ceremonies but the members of the Northern District Panel have been discussing the possibility of arranging for a ceremonial instruction workshop for (say) Directors of Ceremonies. Our District Inspector of Workings, Neil Corlett, is keen to hear from Lodges or individuals who would be willing to support such an initiative (early in 2014). Please communicate your interest to either your Panel Representative or to the DIWkgs; the sooner the better. ncorlett@ optusnet.com.au

Master Geoffrey tours ■ Worshipful Master Geoffrey Davey is well on his way on his half-yearly travels around the globe. He departed on Friday, August 23, and is touring Ireland, Bulgaria and Romania. He is due to return on September 25, in time for a September 30 rehearsal, and our October 3 meeting.
Founder’s apron worn ■ Did you know that Geoffrey Davey wore the Masonic apron of School founder, Rev. Sydney Buckley, at the Installation? ‘Cobber’s’ regalia is held in storage in the Ivanhoe Grammar archives.
Did you know ...? ■ Our organist, WBro. John Cantrill, helps at a number of Lodges. His link with Ivanhoe Grammarians goes back to 1969 when he was Passed. The Master was then WBro. C.T. Holloway.
Trip to the seaside ■ Long-time Ivanhoe Freemason, RWBro Len Jinnette, PJGW, attended his last night as Master of Dromana Lodge (for the second time). Len had been master of Darebin Lodge eight times; and he was formerly Chairman of Ivalda Masonic Temple for 10 years. A strongly cohort of his district past-master colleagues took the 90 km journey on a rainy night. The travellers from Ivalda Temple comprised Eddie Hutchinson (Samaritan Lodge), John Young (Fairfield Lodge), Max Fraser Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge), Geoffrey Davey (Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge); from Brunswick Temple: Nick Le-Ray Meyer (Brunswick United Lodge), Ray Taylor (Brunswick United Lodge), Steve Cusack (Weston Street United Lodge); and from Preston Temple, Richard Heron (Antient York lodge). During the formal lodge meeting Nick Le-Ray Meyer (retired Vietnam strike pilot) delivered a paper on the symbolism shared between aeroplane flying and Freemasonry. A light-hearted exchange at the festive board following the meeting witnessed the return of an age-old custom of presenting the retiring master with a couple trinkets: a Dinky car in recognition of Len's multi-km travels, a note book to enter his many and several appointments, and a paper bag in which to store it all for safe-keeping until Kingdom come. - Geoffrey Davey

News from the US ■ Janis and Michael Holloway send an e-mail, whilst on holidays in America: “We are currently staying near Yosemite National Park and will visit it tomorrow. “Today we went to Columbia State Historic Park which had a rebuilt Masonic Temple, built as it was, with views through windows of the meeting room inside. “Ordinary carpet rather than the ‘chess board’. The windows had buttons which when pressed gave stories about various stuff, including the charity work which one of the ladies lodges gave to people in need of medical help. It was impressive.”
First Degree work ■ Entered Apprentice Travers Gascoigne attended Preston Temple on Monday, August 5, to re-travel the journey of his First Degree He was accompanied from the Lodge by Master Geoffrey Davey and Immediate Past Master Max Fraser. Several Entered Apprentices initiated in other district lodges made their similar debut. The knowledge imparted included terms, tools and environment which form a significant part of the degree ceremony It is now mandatory for each Apprentice Freemason to take a ‘MAP’ program before approaching his second and third degrees and following his Raising. EA Scott Bales will attend a special MAP course when he visits Australia around Tuesday, November 2.

Unity presentation ■ Our Director of Ceremonies, WBro Michael Holloway, will receive the Unity Certificate and Pin at our October 3 meeting. The presentation will be made by VWBro. Wayne Smith. It recognises a member who was completed all five degrees. Much of our communication is one-way - the Lodge to the Member. Many a member who knows that he will not be able to attend the next meeting will send an apology. I am sure the Master, the Almoner and, indeed, the Secretary, would consider it bountiful if the Lodge could be made aware of the vicissitudes in your life. Accordingly, an apology would be considered courteous if you could forward same to Secretary Ash at: ash@long.com.au or 9439 9927 - Geoffrey Davey
