Play Up! Play Up! ■ The title of his poem is Vitai Lampada and means " the torch of life". It refers to how a school boy, a future soldier, learns selfless commitment to duty in cricket matches in the famous playing fields at Clifton College. Henry Newbolt attended Clifton College in his teens (late 1870s). This was a private boys' boarding school near Bristol. He was the son of a Vicar. He was educated at Oxford. He was an English poet historian, novelist and practised as lawyer. He was a devout Christian, and a firm believer in tradition. He held many positions including the Admirality and Foreign Office. His writings were comparable to that of his contemporary, Rudyard Kipling. This poem seems to embody the core values of Freemasonry but it was not written for that purpose. The historical context was the early part of the 19th Century when young men were indoctrinated with gentle virtues, such as honesty, charity, and industry. With the spread of the British Empire more sterner qualities were needed to serve the Empire. And they were exhorted to fight a clean fight, keep a straight bat, maintain a stiff upper lip, and to be magnanimous towards a foe. It is a poem about honour and duty and comerade which was once taught at schools and later taught as Citizenship. It was a model of ethical behaviour and conduct and comerade based on the game of cricket.
Commentary by WBro George Foenander Vitaï Lampada: ‘the torch of life’. (Play-up! Play-up! And Play the game!) by Sir Henry Newbolt, 1862-1938
Text of the Poem 1.There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night Ten to make and the match to win A bumping pitch and a blinding light, An hour to play, and the last man in. And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat, Or the selfish hope of a season's fame, But his Captain's hand on his shoul"Play up! play up! and play the game!" 2.The sand of the desert is sodden red Red with the wreck of a square that broke; The Gatling's jammed and the Colonel dead, And the Regiment blind with dust and smoke. The river of death has brimmed his banks, And England's far, and Honour a name, But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks "Play up! play up! and play the game!" 3.This is the word that year by year, While in her place the School is set, Every one of her sons must hear, And none that hears it dare forget. This they all with a joyful mind Bear through life like a torch in flame, And falling fling to the host behind "Play up! play up! and play the game!" Continued On Page 9

And Play The Game! 1. The first verse is set on the school cricket fields: the Close; and the team is in a difficult position : "ten to make and a match to win". The last man is the weakest batsmen and he has to make 10 runs if his team is to win.; A bumping pitch and a blinding light: the match will go on until evening. Now the sun is low and in the batsman's eyes, putting him at an even further disadvantage. An hour to play: whatever the state of play, the match will be ended in time for the evening meal. So further strain on the batsman. So the first verse suggests that learning to be a team player is better than thinking of personal gain - "not for the sake of a ribboned coat".
A broken square was a military disaster. And Kipling in his poem, Fuzzy Wuzzy, said: "but for all the odds against you, Fuzzy Wuzzy, you broke the square. The meaning of this verse is that even in battle, the principles of selflessness learnt on the cricket field still holds: "but the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks: play-up! Play-up! And play the game" The last verse is about the passing of the torch from generation to generation through the school . It makes a plea for the values of continuity and tradition and discipline learnt at school to be handed down from generation to generation: "and falling fling to the host behind".
2. In the second verse, these men who were once boys playing cricket are now in a foreign land facing an even more difficult situation. This is the battle of Abu Klea In Sudan, in 1885, in the unsuccessful attempt to rescue the Colonel: "the Gatling's jammed and the colonel is dead". " a Square that broke: a square was a formation used by the infantry against attacking cavalry, in the days of single shot rifles and before. The men would form a square, several ranks deeps, close together, with fixed baynots facing outwards on all sides. Each horse attacking would be facing from six to eight bayonets, but the drill instructors used to say to the recruits, "horses is stupid, but they aint that stupid".
Newbolt married Margret Duckworth of a prominent publishing family. They had two children. His wife had a long running lesbian affair with her childhood friend Ella, who accompanied the Newbolts on their honeymoon. Ella was also Newbolt’s lover. This seems to have given a new meaning to "play-up! Play-up! and Play the Game". CONCLUDING REMARKS AND FINAL COMMENTS . To what extent does the values of this poem still apply today? Much of them as espoused by the spirit of the British Empire and the sportsmanship of cricket may not apply as much today. Continued On Page 10

Ivanhoe Grammar cedars link with history ■ Helen Penrose and her History Smiths team are compiling the Ivanhoe Grammar School story, ahead of the 2015 centenary. One aspect is the link of Freemasonry with the School. The original drive from Lower Heidelberg Rd to Ivanhoe House was lined with cedars.
Our own Wor. Bro David Waugh, and Grand Librarian Wor. Bro. Jim Spreadborough, have been helpful in researching early day links with Freemasonry, dating back to the 1800s. Jim has also researched Eaglemont Lodge membership of the Buckley brothers back as far as the 1920s.
