Bogus fundraising ■ There is currently an email circulating purporting to be from a NSW member of the Craft, “Alan Gale”. He is soliciting a donation of $50 towards the recent NSW bushfire events. There is no lodge number of name attached to the original email and (perhaps unfortunately for him) it was sent to a Lodge secretary here who is a former Police officer and Unanimity Club member. Investigations reveal NO support for this appeal from either NSW or Vic Grand Lodges. The email is appearing in a number of different forms with different names being used. It asks for money to be either sent by cheque to a private post office box in South Sydney or, preferably, by direct deposit to an account allegedly linked to a Facebook page.

OUR ‘BUCKLEY NIGHT’
■ In February, our Lodge will hold its first ‘Buckley Night’, which aims to salute the Rev. Sydney Buckley, the founder of the School and Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge. Buckley “invented” St James Grammar School in 1915. The name change to Ivanhoe Grammar School took place in 1920. Buckley aimed to start the Lodge in 1939, but this was delayed until 1946 (because of World War II). His brother, Harry Buckley, was first Master. Syd Buckley was our Lodge Chaplain for decades. At tonight’s meeting (Nov. 7), members will be asked to help compile a list of ‘Ivanarians’ (Old Boys, Fathers of students, etc) who are already Freemasons, and who may consider a second Lodge membership with ‘584’. The original school history, What Matter I, penned by John B Harper, in 1965, recalled: “"The first time I met Sydney Buckley was on a summer evening at the beginning of 1922. “My father had decided to enrol me at Ivanhoe Grammar School and had taken me with him to meet the Head-

Taking the first step ■ RWor Bro. Bill Wilkinson, of the Brunswick United Lodge, tells of Bro Gurpal Singh take the first step in his journey in Freemasonry. “Bro Singh is a Sikh and therefore wore his turban at all times (a fine contribution to the evening). “The ceremonial was of quality with the charges being delivered with emphasis and meaning. “The speeches were well received and appreciated with Bro Singh (a lawyer) responding to the toast to himself with dignity and humour. “The candelabra and subdued lighting in the South added to the atmosphere of the evening.”
Move to Echuca ■ WBro Nick LeRay-Meyer, Secretary of theVietnam Veterans Memorial Lodge, says their traditional 'away' meeting will be held at Echuca Masonic Centre, 426 High St, Echuca on Saturday, November 16 at 7.30pm. Towards the conclusion of the meeting, non-Freemasons will be admitted, and a Long Tan Ceremony will take place.
Absent Brethren ■ Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge is re-introducing a Toast to Absent Brethren at its monthly meetings. A feature of the November and December ‘Souths’ will be Prosper The Art, and candidate responses.

2 for, 2 against ■ The Victorian Lodge of Research (on Friday, October 25) held a ‘debate’ with two speakers ‘for’, and two ‘against’, on the question of “"Was English and Scottish Freemasonry prior to 1717 truly speculative?"
What is Masonry? ■ How do you answer the query "What is Freemasonry?" from a non-Freemason or prospective candidate? We know the formal response but you may find the following a useful addition: "Freemasonry is the only organisation in society that, apart from religion, teaches morality and other wholesome principles. “It is a way of life - among other things it reinforces; kindness in the home, honesty in business, respect for others and the law, racial acceptance, courtesy in society and fairness in all things"
Last Night ■ Wor. Bro Wayne Motton, Secretary of Admrial Collingtwood Lodge, says their Master’s ‘Last Night’ to be held on November 26 at Ivalda will include a South with a ‘Very Indian Affair’ with mild Indian food and a Bollywood dancing demonstration. Ladies are welcome.

Rev. Sydney Buckley “It was an impressive driveway, or so it has always seemed in my memory. “Some years afterwards it was submerged in what has become the North Oval. But at this time it swept in broad and graceful curves from the Lower Heidelberg Road up to the crest of the hill where stood Sherwood House and the block of classrooms that had not long before been built. "To me then not quite 11 years old and accustomed only to women teachers, the prospect of meeting the Headmaster of my new school was something to fill me, if not with apprehension, at least with that peculiar anxious tension one feels before an examination or important race. "I cannot recall what pcture my imagination had formed of the Headmaster; but whatever it may have been, it was forgotten immediately he stepped out on the balcony of Sherwood to meet us. There was a natural warmth in his greeting which dispelled reserve. “He talked of his plans for the School and as he talked his enthusiasm became infectious. His speech was direct and incisive, his eyes - small but alert and bright - held you in their glance. “His manner was warm and manly. He showed us over the School Sherwood House with its imposing tower and its beautiful old balcony draped with wisteria, the stately trees and garden. “Then, as we were leaving, he suggested we should go with him to the book room and there, to my joy, he presented me with a new school cap.”

MASTER’S OFFICIAL VISIT
■ Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge Worshipful Master RWor. Bro. Geoffrey Davey paid an official visit to Rod Fraser, Principal of Ivanhoe Grammar School, on October 22. Geoffrey told of the history of the Lodge, it being consecrated in 1946, with strong links to School founder, the Rev. Sydney Buckley, who served as its Chaplain for decades. Geoffrey explained the Lodge’s desire to be involved in the School Centenary Celebrations in 2015, with the possibility of part of the Combined Schools Meeting being held in May 2015, and an Installation scheduled for August 2015.

Geoffrey presented a cheque for the Lodge’s annual book prizes for students. He and the Principal also discussed possibilities of a Lodge gift to the School in 2015. Geoffrey noted that 75 per cent of our membership comprises Old Boys, fathers of past/present students and masters, leaving just 25 per cent as friends or not IGS-centric. A photo was taken which may appear later in Ivanhoe News. At the conclusion of the meeting, Geoffrey and Rod made their way to a party to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge honorary member, Most Wor. Dr John Connell. John is a Life Governor of IGS, a former President of the Freemasons Hospital. He hopes to join us at our December meeting.
