‘BUCKLEY NIGHT’
■ Tonight sees the first of our annual ‘Buckley Night’ events, commemorating the work of School and Lodge founder, the Rev. Sydney Buckley. It was in February 1915 (99 years ago) that Buckley became Headmaster of St James Grammar School (renamed Ivanhoe Grammar School in 1920). Some 14 pupils attended. It was on the first Tuesday of July 1946 that Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge was consecrated, with Buckley as Chaplain, and his brother, Harry Buckley, as the Lodge’s first Master. Our next Buckley Night is due to be held in February 2015, coinciding with the School Centenary. Tonight’s speakers are Distinguished Bros. Max Fraser, John Knorr, Michael Holloway, John Harper and David Waugh.

COBBER’S LIFE OF SERVICE
■ Sydney Leonard Buckley was born at Rutherglen in northeastern Victoria on September 8, 1882. He was the fourth son of a family of six boys and four girls. On completing his schooling at Hawthorn College, he returned to Rutherglen where he joined the staff of the local branch of the State Savings Bank as its first junior clerk at a salary of £20 per annum. It was during his employment with the Bank in Melbourne that Buckley first became interested in social work. Ultimately he decided he would seek to enter the Ministry of the Anglican Church. After taking his Arts Degree, Buckley set to work to obtain his Licentiate of Theology. He took his Diploma in 1910 and was ordained at St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, in the same year. Buckley began his ministry in 1910 as curate of St Thomas's Church, Essendon. He was later sent to Ivanhoe, where he
commenced the St James Grammar School in 1915. It became the instition that we know, 99 years later, as Ivanhoe Grammar School. In an article from Hoe, published by the Old
Ivanhoe Grammarians in 1964, a special article paid tribute to Buckley’s 33 years as Headmaster, over 49 years of service at Ivanhoe. “Some two thousand boys passed through his hands.” Turn to Page 4

Sydney Leonard Buckley ● From Page 3 We thank RWor. Bro. Geoffrey Davey for providing the article, along with others including Sydney Buckley’s essay, What I Know About Boys. The Hoe tribute from 50 years ago spoke of Buckley guiding the School through the difficult days of the Depression, developing an institution “throbbing with life”. Sydney Buckley enlisted in the First AIF in 1917, serving as Chaplain on the troopship Ballarat, and with the 66th, 49th and 21st Battalions. “On his return, in 1919, he decided with the approval of the Archbishop of Melbourne, to devote himself entirely to the school and it was due to his tremendous energy and sense of dedication that its present beautiful property was acquired and the school itself became firmly established as a leading secondary school for boys.” In 1927, he married Sister Evelyn Flett, matron of the boarding house. Their daughter Mary was born. Hoe remarked: “Mr Buckley was a man of vision and of the highest integrity. As a schoolmaster, he was interested primarily in the development of character and the ideal of service to the community. “Indeed his inspiration was communicated to his boys by precept and example, right from the early days; this was his dedicated life’s work ...” Sydney Buckley, and some of his brothers, were members of the Eagle-
mont Lodge, which met at the Ivalda Masonic Temple. There were plans to form an Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge in 1939, but the outbreak of World War II interrupted. The consecration of Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge took place on Tuesday night, July 2, 1946, at Ivalda. Up to 150 Masons attended on that night. Buckley’s brother, Harry, was our first Master. ‘Cobber’ (Sydney) was Chaplain for many years. His name consistently appears as proposer or seconder for many of the Lodge’s candidates in those early years. The editorial writer of The Ivanarian magazine in 1947, writing about Cobber’s imminent retirement, said it this way: “Even the youngest amongst us have been unable to help liking the informal kindly advances of the bronzed old warrior who patted them on the head at morning assembly or during his frequent visits to the Prep. playground. “As the years pass, that liking grows into a tremendous respect for a truly great man. It is said that willingness to serve is a mark of true greatness. “If this is so, then our Head must be ranked among the greatest, for truly has he served God and his country. “There are few fields of national service greater than educating its youth, and countless boys can testify tro the willing service, help and friendship tendered to them by their Headmaster.” Bro. Sydney Buckley passed to the Grand Lodge Above on March 9, 1964.

WAYNE’S CHARITY RIDE
■ Our own Wor. Bro. Wayne Motton is about to undertake a charity bike ride in Vietnam, from February 21-March 2, to raise funds for the Epworth Hospital. Wayne helped raise funds last year by cycling from Bangkok to Koh Samui. This year’s challenge is from Qui Nhon to Danang, with 25 riders (about 15 of them open heart surgery survivors) to be supported by doctors, nurses and families. The participants are eager to prove to the world that they are healthy and ready to get on with life! Wayne says his life was saved by the Epworth four years ago. Participants in the cycle ride cover all their own costs. The money raised goes to the Cardiac Support Services at the Epwrth Hospital. This ensures the survival of the 'Heart Smart Program' by employing a full-time nurse and buying equipment for the Cardiac wards. They save lives with their great work and get people 'back in the bike' of life. If you are able to give any amount towards this cause, please do so by
● Wor. Bro. Wayne Motton clicking on this link: https://epworthcycle-challenge-2014.everydayhero. com/au/mr-wayne-motton ■ Four years ago, Wayne had a triple by-pass, a vein grant around an Aortic Valve replacement, and then 12 days later a Pace Maker to control some irregular beats as a result of the sevenhour long operation. Complications meant a second operation. The ‘Heart Start Program’ encouraged Wayne to re-commence his active program of activities.

Pages From The Past â– From The Victorian Craftsman, August 1917 DECISIONS It appears to be the practice in America for the Grand Master to reply to questions through the columns of the Masonic press. From an exchange we cull the following: Question: Who should pay for the liquors at a Masonic banquet? Answer: It is contrary to Masonic principles to furnish intoxicating liquors at a banquet given by a Lodge and paid for with Lodge funds. Question: Is it legal to kill a brother Mason who has committed a Masonic offence? Answer: Unlawful killing is a Masonic offence, whether the one killed was a Mason or not. Question: Is smoking in a Lodge illegal? Answer: Smoking is improper. The use of intoxicating liquors at the supper table in America and Canada has been prohibited by law. The Home Journal says that the attendance at meetings has not fallen off as predicted. At a lecture delivered the other evening a brother with great snoring ability dropped off to sleep a few minutes before the lecturer commenced, and only awoke at the applause on its conclusion. He had travelled from a distant suburb to be present, and returned deep in thought, not over the lecture, but at what he had missed. We were informed that he is an ardent churchman. - Thanks to Jim Spreadborough

VALE BRO. BILL LYON
■ We regret to advise of the passing of our late Brother, Bill Lyon. William Alexander Lyon was a member of this Lodge; at age 20, then listed as a salesman, he was initiated on September 7, 1951. Bill was proposed by Bro. Graham 'Hacker' Hawke Jnr, and his seconder was Bro. Bill. Dodemaide. Bill remained a member of the Lodge until his resignation in 1967. He continued his interest in its affairs, and had a deep appreciation of its brotherhood. As the long-time Honorary School Archivist, he kept abreast with Lodge doings, and during the past year (during his illness) he received the monthly Lodge Newsletter. Bill Lyon was a son of Hector and Stella Lyon, and was Captain of Ivanhoe Grammar School in 1949. He was an accomplished athlete, and was one of the strong founder members of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club in the 1960s. He was last year named as a Legend of that Club. 'Blue', as he was affectionately known, had a love of local and school history. He was a member of the teaching staff of both the Junior School and Senior School. My brother, Greg Long, wrote these beautiful words of tribute this week: "Dad had said that if I accepted the offer I was going to a school where there were lots richer than our family. Would I surrender a playing field of
gravel for an oval of grass? Would I surrender the dubious joy of sharing of papier mache clay with Fred S for an unknown quest into the world of learning in the leafy suburbs so far from the flats of my working class domain? Would I be prepared to wear a brown cap as I walked home from the terminus? I have often, in later years, reflected upon my stupidity and its links with destiny. I said yes. Thus it was almost 50 years ago and he was my teacher in my new school. He appeared fearsome. Big, strong, obviously intelligent, a sportsman of note in his prime. I found not only a man of wisdom, but of patience, true tolerance, virtue, skill and substance. I was ‘Greg, The Black’; my friend ‘Greg, The Red’. There are many memories of that year. Most of them were of ‘disastrous failures’ or ‘ sources of embarassment’ for me. Never was there an uncharitable word from that man, however. In that final year of Primary School James was dux, cousin Don second and the new boy ‘Greg The Black’ third in the academic prize much to the surprise of the establishment and to the delight of his parents. I wonder whether Bill Lyon knew how much his being meant to this one soul. Probably he knows now. Thanks Sir, Thanks Mr Lyon. Do rest in peace. I will (with God's grace) see you again, Sir ... Mr Lyon.” - A.L.

Early ANZAC reunion ■ Wor. Bro. Alan Mitchell, Secretary of The Army Lodge No 478, asks us to note the early date of March 29 for the Combined Lodges ANZAC Reunion. The notice is contained in that Lodge’s newsletter, Dinkum Oil, which takes its name from a newsletter distributed on Gallipoli during June and July 1915, generally among the 1st Division.
Passing of Brother ■ On January 5 we received the sad news of the passing of Wor. Bro. Don Austin PJGD who had been battling serious illness for some time. Thoughts are with Don's wife Tricia, his sons Jamie and Stephen, the members of Don's family, and the WM and members of The Plenty Valley Lodge No 703.
News from Yea ■ We thank Wor. Bro. Stuart Dale, Secretary of Duke of Clarence Lodge, Yea, for his ongoing forwarding of that Lodge’s Summons. Ivanhoe Grammar School was evacuated to Yea during World War II and has ongoing connections with a number of local families (including the Purcells).
‘Double First’
Memories of ‘Blue’ ■ Geoffrey Davey notes his memories of Bill Lyon (see Pages 9 and 11): “He and I started the ‘Hoe in 1955, with art-work by Noel Watson during paste-up. “The first edition typed by my wifely nurse on her dining room table. Some years later, after a good run, and the school was upgrading its old boy connection professionally, the voluntary input alone had become passé; hence, it was subsumed within a school mag “Our relationships commenced some years earlier, when he was Secretary and I was Treasurer – for a while we more or less ran the Old Boys between us “Obviously, we both were very IGScentric – still very young and not long out of school.”
Good Friday Appeal ■ Peter Harris has passed on details of the Freemasons Victoria involvement with the Good Friday Appeal (April 18) for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Damian Byrne and Rahim Samat have indicated their desire for the morning shift. Michael Holloway (and Simon Browning) would probably prefer the afternoon shift. Other Lodge members are welcome to volunteer their services. Please speak with the Director of Ceremonies.
