Welcome to Old Scotch ■ Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge extends a hearty welcome to Wor. Bro. Paul Daniels, Worshipful Master of the Old Scotch Collegians’ Lodge No 396, and his Brethren, to the joint meeting being held tonight (Thu., April 3). Ivanhoe Grammarians and Old Scotch Lodges are continuing an annual tradition of joint meetings, which enhances our long-standing fellowship. This is the 973rd Regular Meeting of Old Scotch Collegians’ Lodge. Meetings have been held on the first Thursday of the month at the Camberwell Masonic Centre, although this may change soon to the first Wednesday at the new Inner Eastern Masonic Centre, Box Hill. We look forward to spending a convivial night with our Old Scotch brothers.

■ Wor. Bro. Howard Purcell is not with us tonight (Thu., Apr. 3), as he recovers from his recent knee surgery. He was spotted at the Ivanhoe Grammar School ‘Brown Boys’ era luncheon last month, and looks to be recovering well.
Future planning ■ The Lodge hopes to conduct a Committee of General Purposes meeting this month, possibly on a Saturday. One long-range matter to consider are some 2015 meeting dates. The April 2015 meeting is currently scheduled for April 2 (the evening prior to Good Friday 2015). Sometimes in the past such meetings have been moved to the last Thursday in March. This would require Grand Lodge dispensation. Likewise, there has been the suggestion of an Open Installation in August 2015 - possibly on Saturday, August 8.
At the Homes ■ Wor. Bro. George Foenander was at the Open Day for the Royal Freemasons Homes last Saturday (March 29). George was pictured with the Federal Ambassador for the Ageing, Noeline Brown (see Page 1).

What’s On April 2014
News in our Lodge ■ Wor. Bro. David Waugh, our Assistant Secretary, is unable to be with us at the April meeting. David is in charge of the Ivanhoe Grammar School Cadet Unit, which currently has a contingent of more than 400 on an exercise near Beechworth. ■ By the way, did you know that David has moved from Woodend to nearby Kyneton? ■ We hear that former Master, the Rev. Charles Sligo, has not been in the best of health. We extend every good wish. Charles was Headmaster at Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1975 to 1996. ■ Bro. Ash Long is busy organising his Class of 74 reunion to be held at The Centre, Ivanhoe (Town Hall) on Friday, October 17. The 40-year reunion includes the female counterparts from the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School. Ash jokes that many of his year spent more time at Noel St than The Ridgeway. ■ It has been great to see former Master, Wor. Bro. Stephen Mayer, at two recent Lodge meetings.
Grand Honours ■ Wor. Bro. Vin Coles now has the post-nominals - PGStdB (Past Grand Standard Bearer) - following their announcement last month. ■ Our organist, Wor. Bro. John Cantrill, is now Past Grand Inspector of Workings, and has become Assistant Grand Organist.
Doug: on the move ■ Wor. Bro. Doug Golden is on the move. He says he and Sarah are currently living with the in-laws at Kew, whilst their ‘town residence’ is being finished at John St, Ivanhoe - even closer to the School!
The Max factor ■ Wor. Bro. Max Fraser enjoyed the warm waters of Raymond Island, near Paynesville, last weekend. The hot weather provided the opportunity to have a dip in the ocean waters in the final burst of summer. ■ Max and Val have grandchildminding duties this week while one of their children is in the Maldives.

Thoughts for the enquiring Mason ■ The Victorian Lodge of Research reports: In 1830 in Limerick in Ireland, a builder's square was found by a Freemason that appeared to confirm the operative masons' influence upon the development of Freemasonry, whilst also providing evidence of the antiquity of Irish operative masons. So is this story genuine or is it another case of a bit of 19th Century masonic inventiveness? In the town of Limerick the English Town was connected to the Irish Town by an old structure dating from at least the late 1400s - early 1500s. The bridge consisted of four masonry aches spanning the Abbey River and connecting the old part of Limerick Town, situated on King's Island, with the newer part of town. The bridge is depicted in maps of Limerick from the 1500s, although the date of the erection of the original ancient structure is unknown. In 1830 the old ancient four-arch bridge was replaced by a single arch structure, a simple bridge design that displays a high standard of stone workmanship, with stepped conical coping and curved abutment walls. The architects were J.A & G.R. Pain and the contractor was a Mr Williams of the New Limerick Navigation Company. During the course of demolishing the old bridge an old metal square was found. As James Pain, architect and Freemason, wrote in 1870, "…I beg to say I have a perfect recollection of the Square being found and given to me by the workmen - and I think I gave
the Square to the late Brother Michael Furnell who I recollect thought much of it …" In correspondence dating from August 1875 Bro Pain wrote, "…I was standing on the foundation of the Old Bridge, overseeing some labourers I had on the work. One of the labourers came to me: "See, Sir, what we have found among the stones of the Bridge we are taking up"…" In February 1871 Bro Fredrick Furnell, son of Bro Michael Furnell, wrote that, "…How it got imbedded in the masonry of this old bridge no one can tell. I can only account that … some worthy Mason put it in the place where it was found..." The square apparently passed through the hands of the Furnell family until Capt. Furnell, a member of Irish Lodge No 13 presented the Old Square to the Lodge, neatly framed with a sketch of the original bridge, and with a small red square showing the location where the square was originally found. This old square is still to this day carefully treasured by the members of Irish Antient Union Masonic Lodge No. 13. The reason for all the fuss about the square is that it is engraved with the date 1507 or 1517, but is so disfigured that the numerals are hard to make out. However what is clearly visible on this square is the engraved inscription on both sides that reads, "I will strive to live with love and care, Upon the level, by the square" This old square gives Irish Freemasonry an ancient antiquity as old as any of the Scottish evidence.

Early Summons ■ The Draft Minutes for the April meeting, and the Summons for the May meeting, are expected to be mailed early this month to Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge members. The mail-out will also include a complete copy of the latest Grand Secretary’s Bulletin which covers subjects (see summary of contents on Page 4 of this Newsletter.) The earlier dispatch takes into account that the monthly Rehearsal date has been brought forward to Wednesday, April 16, because of the Easter and ANZAC Day break. The rehearsal is an important one: we will be preparing for a First Degree ceremony at the May meeting.
Priceless history ■ Thanks to RWor. Bro. Geoffrey Davey who has passed on a copy of the St James’s Ivanhoe Messenger newsletter from February 1915, the month in which St James Grammar School (later Ivanhoe Grammar School) was founded. The Messenger was widely distributed in the local Ivanhoe community, and features a a letter from the Vicar, the Rev. Sydney Buckley, who was foundation Chaplain of Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge in 1946.
Combined Schools ■ Mount Scopus and Collegians Lodge is holding the Combined Schools Lodge meeting this year on Tuesday, June 17. Bro. David Gilovitz, Secretary of Mount Scopus Lodge, advises that the meeting will be held at Sandringham. Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge is due to conduct the 2015 Combined Schools meeting at Ivalda.
Deacons, DC course ■ David Heazlewood, Assistant District Co-Ordinator, advises of half-day workshops for Deacons and Directors of Ceremonies to be held on Saturday, May 31 at the Brunswick Masonic Centre. A $15 fee applies. The Secretary has registration paperwork for interested Brethren.
