This is the final issue for 2016. Our office is now closed for the summer break.

Our office re-opens on Monday, Jan. 30.

■ Murrindindi Shire’s new-look Council is spreading a message of goodwill this Christmas.

Andrew Vlamis signs off after 44 years ■ The keys to Yea’sAmble Inn Café are due to be handed over to David Ung from Yea Bakery this week.

The sale of the long-standing High St business brings a series of chapters to a close for the Vlamis family.

Andrew Vlamis, now 71, came to Australia from Greece in 1969, after a 38-day boat trip. Andrew had grown up in a family of goat herders in the town of Leonidio in the southern Greece region of Peloponnese.

Andrew had served in the military, rising to the rank of Sergeant, and then as an officer.

In Australia, he worked on a wool press during the day, and washed dishes at night at a South Yarra restaurant.

In 1972, Andrew and brother Peter made a trip to Alexandra to inspect a take-away food business that was for sale.

Their car broke down on the return journey, and they were forced to stop at Yea while their car was repaired. It was here that they met Arthur, the then-proprietor of the Amble Inn Café, who was keen to sell the business which then included delicatessen and fruit-and-vegetables lines.

So - on June 10, 1972 - Andrew started his link with the Amble Inn Café, which had several interludes.

Family has been at the centre of the Vlamis enterprise. Brother Peter, originally a Navy mechanic, was a partner in the early years, before he ran his own fish and chip business at Upwey-Tecoma, returning to run the ‘yellow’ Yea Take-Away.

Younger brother John was employed in the business, before starting his own Yarra Valley Fish and Chips business near the Lilydale Railway Station. The business grew to such an extent that Andrew worked there too for some time.

Another brother, Jim, came from Greece for several years. Andrew and

The business was more of a diner, and has changed over the years to have a greater focus on take-away food.

Andrew suffered a heart attack, and underwnt triple by-pass surgery.

New owner David Ung and partner Leng Ngo plan to diversify into other specialties including juices, smoothies and focaccias. His family took over the Yea Bakery in 2009.

In retirement, Andrew and Anastasia plan to travel overseas, renewing family links.

Andrew’s mother is still alive and in her 90s. Anastasia’s parents are also alive, aged 92 and 93.

The Vlamis family have involved themselves heavily in the Yea community with long links to organisations including the Yea Football Netball Club, and emergency services.

● The Commercial Railway Hotel, Yea, built in 1891-92 ■ Age journalist Richard Cornish’s feature on reasons to visit Yea were welcome this month. He traced the origins of the Peppercorn Hotel back to 1860 ... which seems to be 30 years too many.

According to the Yea and District Historical Society, Thomas Carison of Alexandra, was entrusted with the erection of the 12-roomed brick building in Station St, Yea, in June 1891.

Thomas Smedes Carison, born New York, USA, arrived in Melbourne in 1856 and resided at Alexandra. He built the Shire Hall at Alexandra.

William Oliver intended the building for refreshment rooms, opposite the Yea Railway Station, which had opened in November 1883.

The enterprise did a thriving business withj rail travellers, being strategically located opposite the station, with trains halted for a 20minute refreshment break.

By August 1892, architect and surveyor Norman Hitchcock was engaged in preparing and supervising additions to the Railway Hotel.

William Oliver, aged 63, and a resident of Yea for 39 years, died at the Railway Hotel in January 1900. He had been the proprietor of the old Muddy Creek Hotel, situated between the sites of the Borrie Blacksmith Shop and the Empire Store.

● John Foreman ■ There is a keen Murrindindi contingent that makes its way annually to Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne for the 2pm and 8pm New Years Eve performances by the Australian Pops Orchestra.

The showa, conducted by John Foreman, and hosted by Denis Walter, will feature Silvie Paladino and Marina Prior.

The pair starred in Les Miserables a quarter-of-a-century ago, say publicists.

The night features the 65-piece Australian Philharmonic Orchestra.

● Ross Sichlau ■ Burial at Yea Cemetery on Thursday afternoon (Dec. 15) took place after a service at W.D. Rose Funeral Home, Brighton on Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 14) for Mr Ross Harvey Sichlau, who died at age 70.

Published tributes included those from the Victoria Golf Club, where he was a member for 37 years; and Melbourne Stock Exchange Cricket Club, where he was Secretary, with condolences expressed to Marg, Caroline and Michael.

He was father-in-law to Jason and Kimberley; he was grandfather of Flynn, Emma,Abigail, Ella and Will.

Mr Sichlau, born on March 22, 1946, died on December 7. He was son of Maisie and Lou Sichlau (both dec.) of Yea.

■ A former Highlands State School teacher, Mr John William ‘Jack’ Isles, has died at the age of 89.

Following his passing on December 7, a service was held at Nielsen Funeral Chapel, Warragul, on Monday, December 12.

He was husband of Mary (dec. ) for 66 years; father and father-in-law to John and Barb, Jeff and Julie, Graeme, Ken and Maree, Rod and Sue. He was centre-half-forward in the Yea football premiership side of 1950.

■ The Rotary Art Show in Yea has this month scored a mention in State Parliament.

Cindy McLeish, Eildon MLA, spoke of the annual event in the Legislative Assembly, while Creative Victoria was under debate.

“We have other art shows. There is the Yea Rotary Art Show, and there are art shows in Alexandra, Kinglake and Marysville,” Ms McLeish said.

“At Yea there was hay bale art, which was something amazing. There are open studios in the shires of Nillumbik and Yarra Ranges, and in Nillumbik at the Bend of Islands there are some wonderful artists.

“Syd Tunn and Ona Henderson have done some great work with emus. They have Jessica Rae, Tim Read and Sally Howell in this small community.

“The gallery at Tarrawarra hosts wonderful exhibitions. It has had the Archibald Prize - the Archies - and Healesville has hosted Not the Archies.

“We have chainsaw art. In fact there are a couple of great chainsaw artists. You will see examples of this in both Kinglake and Marysville.

“Art is very much alive in rural and regional Victoria,” Ms McLeish said.

Noah, 12, capped

■ A ‘capping’ ceremony was due to be held on Monday night (Dec. 19) where Yea Tigers junior cricketer was to receive his cap for the Country Week team in which he will represent the region in matches against sides including Gippsland and Ferntree Gully. Noah is due to participate in six matches, plus any finals that may be reached by his side.

Taped metings

● Ted Woods ■ A Yea Football Club from the 1950s has died. Ted Woods was best known for his involvement with the East Brighton Football Club where he played 100 games.

He was that club’s Under 18 coach for 18 years, winning flags in 11 of those years.

Woods notched 102 games during his playing career, and wore spectacles on the field.

He was a “fair exponent of the stab pass”.

A funeral service was held at Allison Monkhouse Brighton Chapel on Thursday, afternoon (Dec. 15).

News Briefs Art Show mention

■ Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass says all Council meetings should be recorded.

Murrindindi Shire Council does not record its proceedings.

Ms Glass, in a 184page report, said that some Councils were inappropriately closing meetings to the public to avoid embarrassment or reputation damage.

Only 16 of Victoria’s 79 council make audio or video recordings of their meetings readily available to the public, says The Age. Ms Glass also called for the mandatory training of all Councillors.

■ Murrindindi Shire Council proposes drainage works on the road reserve at the rear of the properties at 56 and 72 Seal Rock Road, Buxton, which will concentrate and divert the drainage flowing from the road.

Plan for K’lake West ■ A Planning Scheme amendment and planning permit are proposed by Murrindindi Shire Council to facilitate a service station at Kinglake West.

The amendment has been made at the request of the landowners, Angelo and Giuseppe Bonaddio.

The amendment applies to

1274 Whittlesea-Yea Rd, Kinglake West, which is is a 2.04 hectare site situated on the east side of the road about 163 metres north of the intersection of Whittlesea-Yea Rd and Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd. It is on the other side of the road to the old Kinglake West General Store which was destroyed in the 2009 fires.

The matter is due to be considered at the meeting of the Murrindindi Council due to be held at Alexandra tonight (Wed.).

The plan involves a service station, convenience shop, postal agency, food and drink premises and associated car parking and signs on ‘rural living zone’ land.

At Alexandra SC ■ Alexandra Secondary College students were kept busy last week with a number of trips. Early in the week, pupils were on an excursion to Lake Mountain for a day of activities including the flying fox, tube runs and laser skirmish.

Last Thursday (Dec. 15) saw students split into two destination groups – Funfields in Whittlesea, and Go Jump in Shepparton.

Progressive farms ■ Hughes Creek Catchment Collaborative is gauging the level of interest in a Progressive GroupProgressive Farming Group.

An active group of young farmers is envisaged. The idea is to tap into the collective local farming knowledge, but also to explore innovative techniques to improve productivity and farm outcomes.

Annual report ■ Murrindindi Shire Council has released its Annual Report for the 12 months ending June 30, 2016. The document includes the financial report for the year. The report may be inspected at the Council’s website.

Local People Postings to cease ■ The Local Paper salutes Michael Minter who has operated the yea.com.au website for the past 10 years.

Michael has just announced that he will cease postings. He says sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter provide alternatives, “combinedx with an ongoing lack of support from quite a few organisations in the Yea area”, has led to his decision.

The site will continue with a few changes.

Weather information continues to be a popular attraction.

Michael Minter paid special thanks to Karen Anstey who helped with running the website for a number of years.

■ Breast-cancer survivors across Yarra Ranges are being asked to consider taking part in a 12-233K Cancer Council Victoria trial aimed at tracking activity benefits post breast cancer treatment.

CCV spokesman Joseph Regan said although increasing physical activity after a breast cancer diagnosis had been shown to improve survival and other health outcomes, research showed that 84 per cent of women who had had breast cancer did not meet physical activity guidelines.

Yea Red Cross ■ At the last monthly sub.committee meeting of the above, held in the Shire hall, reports were received from the treasurer and from various collectors, and some of these show that the people of the Yea district are prepared to support the policy of voluntary subscriptions as adopted by the society.

The district has been mapped into different sections and collectors appointed for each, each collector being given the power to appoint sub collectors to help collect in his or her district. In one or two instances the collectors have found it difficult to get in touch with everyone in the district appointed them, and steps are now being taken to afford them some relief. and it is hoped that by the New Year every part of the Shire will be doing its full share in helping this noble cause

by Mrs R. Vining, of Yea, from her son Private P. J. Vining, who was previously reported wounded, and is now in an hospital at Oxford, England : Tigne Hospital, Malta, Oct. 14th, 1915.

MY DEAR MOTHER, - Just a few lines to let you know that I am not too bad, although I am in the hospital. I suppose you will have received a cable by the time this reaches you telling you that I have been wounded. But, Dear Mum, don't worry, I am not too bad. I got a shrapnel pellet in the left ankle. It went in just above the ankle on the outside, and did not come out. The pellet is now in the joint on the inside. It won't take much to get it out, as you can see where it is. I don't know when they are going to take it out, but I wish they would hurry up as it is very painful. There is one good thing, it did not break any bones.

When it was done I could move my ankle and toes about easily. Now, Dear Mum how I came to get hit, came out of the trenches at 11 o'clock for 24 hours spell in supports. Had dinner, and was down at the cook house waiting for some more chaps to go on water fatigue.

I was sitting down in a door way about 2 feet wide at about 1.40p.m. when suddenly we heard a shell coming. Of course I made a duck to get behind some sand bags. but was not quite quick enough, and, of course, caught one. Two of us got hit. The other chap got it through the calf of the right leg, We were carried down to the beach and sent on to the hospital boat. One of the men who carried me down to the beach was terribly unlucky. He had just left me and got about 20 yards on his way home when be got a piece of shrapnel through the shoulder, breaking the bone.

But, Mum, don't worry, I am not too bad.

They say I will get a trip to England with it, so that won't be too bad. Funny, too, Donald Drysdale and I were the only two left out of the Yea boys who came away to gether. All the others had gone away sick. Now Donald is left on his own.

Oh, well, Dear Mum, no more now, as I will write you a longer letter next week, so I will wind up with kindest regards to all the Yea people and lots of love to all at home, not forgetting yourself, and love to all re lations.

Local Sport Yea U12 Cricket

■ The young Tigers travelled on Friday night to Kilmore to play the last game before Christmas.

Kilmore had nine players and Yea had 11 so Oliver Bree agreed to play on his cousin’s side to even things up, and this made for an interesting contest with Andrew and Oliver playing against one another.

Yea batted first and some good partnerships saw its boys and girl getting to a total of 83 from 20 overs .

Kilmore batted well and were a bit more consistent and with 24 extras bowled by Yea, the Tigers only went down by 12 runs with Kilmore scoring 95 in a nice close game played with good spirit.

The young Tigers have the next six weeks off and will come back at the start of the new school year raring to go.

Merry Christmas and safe new year to all players and parents. Training will resume on Wednesday, January 25, and the first game will be on Friday, January 27.

Yea U14 Cricket

■ Yea Under 14s travelled to Leckie Park Alexandra to take on the ladder leaders on Saturday.

Yea had strike bowlers Ruby O'Dwyerand Monty Lawson back in the side and the pair combined to have Alexandra reeling at 3/7 after four overs.

The Tigers fieldsmen were doing a great job supporting their bowlers. Leo HalfordMolinaro picked up two wickets in the tenth over with some help from old mate Austen Ross who clung to a classic at square leg.

The Tigers eventually dismissed Alexandra for 66 in the 21st over.

Our batsmen had experienced some major problems coping with turf pitches earlier this season and would have to bat sensibly to make the runs.

Coach Dan looked to reliable Abby Christie to shield some of our more ambitious stroke makers from Alexandra's opening bowlers and the turf wicket.

Abby produced a captain's nock batting until the 11th over. Opening partner Oscar Lawson then set about anchoring the innings, as wickets frequently fell around him.

Oscar retired on 30 with Yea in a seemingly unbeatable position at 5/58 after 20 overs.

However, Reece ‘Stokesy’ Hargreaves quickly learnt that crickets a funny game as he suddenly found himself facing a hat-trick ball with his team capitulating at 7/65, just two runs short of victory.

Stokesy dug in and helped Ruby guide the team to victory. The Tigers finished on 9/73 after 24 overs.

The Tigers find themselves in a good position at the half way point of the season.

Word on the street is that there could be a major signing out of Glenburn over the Christmas holiday period, which would further enhance the Tigers’ already realistic prospects of snaring back to back premierships.

The team wishes Abby, Ruby and their Northern Rivers region side good luck in the State Championships which will be played in January.

■ Some 18 golfers playing in six teams of three, contested Wednesday’s Ambrose at Yea Golf Club.

With the course looking fantastic, it was a fun way to celebrate this time of year, with a Kris Kringle and the ladies providing a lovely lunch afterwards.

Winners with a score of 68 (11 1/3 handicap) net 56 1/3 were Vicki Clements, Vicki Butler and Alan Pell.

Second were Jeff and Sue Aurisch with Karen Sangster with 73 (13 2/3) net 59 1/3.

Alan also won the NTP on the 11th hole.

‘Tail between legs over dog laws’: MP ■ Daniel Andrews's State Labor Government has been forced to back down on proposed laws that would restrict the operation of registered dog breeders.

Cindy McLeish , State MLA for Eildon, said the back down proved the Andrews Government had failed to consult with the community about the changes.

"Daniel Andrews has his tail between his legs after failing to work with ethical dog breeders in attempting to overhaul Victoria's domestic animal legislation," Ms McLeish said.

The proposed legislation was withdrawn from the Victorian Parliament following recommendations made by a Parliamentary Committee that investigated its impact on the community.

A key finding of the inquiry was that "consultation with rel-

"Clearly Labor failed to consult industry and local government about their laws which were originally designed to crack down on illegal puppy farms," Ms McLeish said.

"Whilst it is important that we crack down on cruel and

unethical puppy farms, many pedigree dog breeders would have been unfairly forced to dramatically change their business operations if these laws were passed."

Ms McLeish said that she had received an overwhelming response from local dog breeders concerned the new laws would be too strict.

"Many breeders are already registered and are required to comply with strict industry standards.

“Labor's red tape would have been manifestly unfair on the people who treat animals with love and respect.

"I trust an embarrassed Daniel Andrews will now work with the Coalition and the community to ensure we get the right outcomes when it comes to animal welfare, " Ms McLeish said.

These grants aim to support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers.

They provide small amounts of money that organisations and community groups can use to help their volunteers. They are part of the Government’s work to support the volunteers who help disadvantaged Australian communities and encourage inclusion of vulnerable people in community life.

■ As we near Christmas 2016, the YeaKinglake RSL Sub-Branch asks that we spare a thought for our troops overseas in 1916 as Christmas drew near.

“ANZAC veterans in Egypt had been reinforced, moved to France and endured the battles of Fromelles, Pozieres and Mouquet Farm, suffering nearly 30.000 casualties,” said Sub-Branch President Jeffrey Swain.

“Australian troops on the Western Front in December 1916, many quartered at Flers, were enduring an appalling winter. The battles of 1917 to come would be even more desperate.

“The Australian Light Horse in the Middle East Theatre, in defence of the Suez Canal, had captured the Turkish outpost at Jitjaffa and stopped the Turkish advance at the Battle of Romani.

“Advancing into the extreme conditions of the Sinai Desert, they captured El Arish on December 21, 1916.

“Major General Harry Chauvel'sANZAC Mounted Division and the Imperial Camel Corps would fight the Battle of Magdhaba on December 23, 1916 against an entrenched Turkish garrison; after which the garrison withdrew.

“The capture of Magdhaba and El Arish in the northern Sinai near the border with Palestine helped open the way for the successful allied campaign in Palestine in the years ahead,” Mr Swain said.

YEA TIGERS CRICKET CLUB REPORT ■ A-Grade. Saturday saw the second day of the A-Grade match-up between Yea and Alexandra at the Yea Recreation Reserve.

Alexandra resumed at 3/10 in their pursuit of Yea's 162. The Tigers started strongly with excellent lines and lengths being hit by all members of the bowling attack and Aiden McSpeerin taking two early wickets.

Yea continued to strike regularly to reduce the visitors to 7/53 and take a stranglehold on the match. A couple of lower order partnerships dragged Alex up and over 100, however the innings eventually came to a close on 102 handing Yea first innings points and a 60-run lead.

Chisholm finished with 4 wickets while McSpeerin and Clements took 2 apiece in a disciplined performance at the bowling crease.

Yea started shakily in their second innings losing a cluster of early wickets, however Kane Smith (23 not out) steadied the ship somewhat.

Smith along with Akers saw Yea to the end of play, which was called early when it became apparent there was insufficient time to achieve a result on the second innings.

The win leaves Yea sitting nicely in fourth heading into the Christmas break, 10 points clear of fifth place as the Tigers chase a place in the finals.

- Andrew Cunningham ■ B-Grade travelled to Nagambie this week and with only nine players were on the back foot from the start.

Yea won the toss and elected to bat. Darcy Pell and Lachie Beattie both batted well taking their time and not giving away their wicket. Darcy fell edging one to gully for 10. Andrew Butterworth and Lachie batted well together and put on a 50-run partnership which contained some powerful and skilful shots from the pair.

Andrew fell for 26 trying to take on the bowler.

Lachie continued on his way with Allan Pell but eventually fell in the 33rd over for 21. Allan made a handy 16 not out.

Yea batted out their 45 overs to finish on 111.

Nagambie came out swinging and got onto a few but Lachie Beattie was again up to the challenge.

Nagambie's batsman took a particular likening to Andrew Butterworth at the other end and with catches being put down it let them get away.

Lachie was bowling well and finished with figures of 4/33 of his 9 overs. But the day well and truly belonged to Nagambie with them chasing the runs in the 20th over.
