Vale Robert Franklin Tate ■ A guard of honour of fellow Rotarians and members of the Ulysses Bike Club formed in Downey St, Alexandra, last Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 29) to remember the late Robert ‘Bob’ Franklin Tate. Born on March 28, 1933, and passing on Tuesday, March 21 (one week short of his 84th birthday), Bob Tate was remembered as a family man, for his professional work as a veterinarian, and for community involvement. Bob’s passing is mourned by Ann, David and Peter, supported by members of the local community. The service, at St Andrew’s Uniting Church,Alexandra, was led by Pastor Richard Lovett. Music included It’s Hard To Leave (The Seekers), How Great Thou Art, Perhaps Love (John Denver), Morning Has Broken, with a reading of A Time For Everything from Ecclesiastes. Musicians were Jocelyn Coates and Gillian Steward. The eulogy was offered by Anne Reid; with tributes offered by John Bassett of the Rotary Club of Alexandra, John Cook of the Ulysses Bike Club, and representatives from his field naturalist and bird watching groups. Refreshments, afterwards, were provided by the Uniting Church ladies. David Hibbert of Artworkz helped to create a special 42-page eSplash publication to honour Bob. Bob was born in Toorak to parents Alan Robert Tate and Amelia Mary Allen and grew up in Hampton. In 1938 he attended St Andrew's private kindergarten and private school near Kangaroo Flat with his sister Judith, who was four years his senior. He was then sent to Haileybury College in Hampton before being sent to board at Geelong Grammar School on his ninth birthday. At the time he was the youngest boarder at the school. Like many children of the day, his parents sent him to boarding school for his own safety, as there was great fear that the war with the Japanese would spill onto Australian shores. The school had a contingency plan in case of an invasion, and Bob was to be in the care of elder brother Geoffrey who at the time was in the senior school. The lack of independence and the pressure of being involved in a private practice resulted in him looking for new work opportunities. Bob and Ann explored Central Victoria looking for employment opportunities and in 1967 they settled in Alexandra. At this time, Alexandra only had visiting vets who would attend from other districts, so Bob and Ann considered the Alexandra district as ripe for the pickings. At this time there were more than 60 dairy farms in the Alexandra Shire alone, with around the same amount again in the Yea Shire. This number guaranteed there would be a steady amount of work available. A number of local farmers were so keen to see Bob stay in the district, that they contributed to a fund to help his family with initial rental costs. Their first clinic was run from a bedroom at the back of a house they rented at 20 Webster St in Alexandra. Their second child Peter was born in 1968 while they were living at this property. They ran the clinic in Webster St for a year, before moving into their second property on the corner of Nihil and Bayley Sts in 1968. The new property was their first purchase and cost them $9500. Again they converted a bedroom into a surgery. The garage and verandah were converted into kennels and used for storage. In late 1969 they purchased a home located diagonally across the street in Bayley St for $8500, retaining the corner block as an investment property. Again they used a bedroom of their home as a surgery and lived in the rest of the house In 1975 they purchased a 60 acre block on the outskirts of Alexandra, on the Goulburn Valley Hwy. In 1977 they sold the property on the corner of Nihil and Bayley Sts for $40,000 and used this money to build a home on the new block in 1977. Bob and Ann ran the practice in Alexandra for 20 years before deciding to change direction.
● Bob Tate They sold the practice to Doug Norman, who had moved from 'Dr Dusty Rhodes' in Colac. Bob worked part-time for Doug over the next eight years. In the meantime, they purchased a caravan hire business which they ran for the next 14 years, while continuing to work for Doug part-time. After eight years Bob formed an associate type practice with Doug, targeting an area in the Strathbogie Ranges, which worked in conjunction with the main practice. This practice continues to this day. Bob was an active member of the Apex Club for a number of years in the lead-up to joining the Rotary Club of Alexandra in 1969. He served as President of Rotary in 1988-89 and was a member of numerous other local groups including the Bird Observers, Field Naturalists and the Victorian Branch of the Ulysses Motor Bike Club and Artworkz. Bob had a great interest in motorcycles, which started when boarding with friend Peter Phillips back in College. Bob was involved in the local 1st Alexandra Boy Scouts, including serving as President of the Scout Committee. He was involved in the establishment of the Alexandra BMX Track in 1982 and served on its committee. Bob served as a long-term member of the Pony Club and put considerable time into the club, which his wife Ann had started in the 1960s. Bob also served on the Ambulance Committee in the 1970s and was a member for around eight years. In 1997 Bob became a volunteer at the Alexandra Information Centre. Bob fell ill in January this year and radiation therapy took him to the edge of life by the end of February. He continued to work as best he could.

Damage at Yea PS
■ Last month’s storm in Yea caused “huge” damage at the Primary School destroying the large shade cloth from the concrete area and many tree limbs came down, particularly on the east side of the oval, says Principal Debbie George. “Chris Cummins, Amanda Jolly, Jim Garlick, Raelene Mold, John Purvis, Ian Porter, Tom Butterworth, Terry Redding and many of their children spent many hours here on Saturday cleaning up and cutting down a damaged tree. “There is s ll some work to complete but a cherry picker is required. Thank you to all these wonderful men who are always prepared to give up their time to support our school. The shade cloth is being replaced as we were covered by insurance,” Ms George said.

Stoccos sentenced to 40 years’ jail ■ Father-and-son crime duo Gino and Mark Stocco, who terrorised the Murrindindi community, have been sentenced to 40 years in jail. ● Graeme Clements ■ Former Yea Water Board identity Graeme Clements blames Murrindindi Shire Council’s inattention to the Craigie St drain for last month’s flood damage in High St. “The Craigie St drain has been neglected once again by the Shire Council,” said Mr Clements. “It was probably the main cause for flooding in the main street during the storm.” He said the Council sent a truck and backhoe to clean the drain and the debris, after the flood occurred. “Half the drain was partly cleared and a lot of debris remain but no further work has been carried out. “This drain carries the major part of the town central stormwater and should be

● Mac and James Yorston ■ It is 33 years ago this week in April 1984 that we purchased the Yea newspaper business from Tom Dignam. One of the first Yea district people that we met was the late John Yorston, who farmed at Highlands. John was killed in a tragic farm accident in the late 1980s. So it was a special surprise for Long Shots to catch up with James Yorston, son of John and Nola, at the Cycle Dindi event last weekend, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Alexandra and Yea. These days, James is involved with the Melbourne Business School in areas of leadership. He is a keen cyclist, and has participated in a number of cycle tours in Europe as well as Australia. James recalls that when the Great Victorian Rail Trail was first mooted, there was opposition, with some people predicting that it would upset animals on adjoining properties. If ever anyone needed convincing of the success of the Trail, then the Cycle Dindi event proves it. ■ We are told that Elle Shaw is no longer Community Reporter at the Alexandra Standard-Yea Chronicle. That is a pity because the Gobur resident added real news and crisp captioned photos to our contemporaries’ pages. Some of Elle’s final work was a threepage feature on the Kinglake bush kinder. No Yea Chronicles appear to have arrived at thier Kinglake outlet last week.
■ Yea Shire Engineer, Stan Kisler, came under vigorous fire of Councillors over local roads in April 1987. Cr Ian Bell, leading the attack, said Mr Kisler: ■ Charged some people, and did not charge others,a 7½ per cent engineering cost surcharge for roads, ■ Made unnecessarily expensive restrictions on a road proposed for a Highlands subdivision planned by Ms M. Morris, ■ Produced “remarkably inconsistent figures” in relation to road projects with the Shire, ■ Had set no firm guidelines on road projects for subdivisions, ■ Failed to produce comparable figures for different road projects.

■ Molesworth hotelier Bill Morris applied to build a four-unit motel alongside the hotel. The plan included an office and residence, Yea Council was advised.
$13,000 damages
■ Vandals caused $13,000 damages to the old Kinglake East Primary School, Yea Council was told. The offenders broke every window and skylight, damaged walls, doors and roofing. The Kinglake District Community Association abandoned its campaign to use the old building.

Middle Kinglake kids at leadership day ■ Three Middle Kinglake Primary School Grade 6 students - April Darkin, Samuel Gambin and Emilee Donnelly travelled to the Melbourne Convention Centre on Monday last week (Mar. 27) to join more than 4000 other primary school students and participate in the National Young Leaders’ Day imagiNATION. The day was packed with inspirational speakers who delivered strong messages about their leadership journeys. Motto for the day was “Together We Can”. Principal Meagan Callander said that the day is always valuable, providing the students with lots of ideas about leadership that can be put into practice on their return to school. Club Captain Gary Pollard returned a fine 36 points to win the men’s daily comp and honorary member, (visiting from Mornington GC) Trish Wech won the ladies’ comp. with an excellent 31points. Ladies Tour winner was Adrianne Anglin Men’s Tour winner was Gary Pollard.
Win for St Mary’s ■ Whittlesea St Mary's Primary School boys’ cricket team went through the season undefeated, winning their final match by one run against Hazel Glen. They now move into the regional competition. The girls’ cricket team and the soccer teams also enjoyed success in Term I.
Lessons about dogs ■ Whittlesea Primary School’s Foundation, Year 1 and 2 students had a special visitor on Monday Last week (Mar. 27). Jess from the Responsible Pet Ownership program came to meet with students, offering tips on how to approach and care for dogs.
RSL mural activity ■ Final stages of painting the Alexandra RSL mural are taking place over the Apriul 1-2 and 708 weekends Young people are invited to ring Anna Baker (0468 359 880) to secure their spot on the More Murals painting team. Alternatively, just turn up at the RSL building on Grant St (next to the UT Creek bridge) at 9am this Saturday ((Apr. 8) and introduce yourself to project artist Russell Danby. Russell and local young people (aged 1218) will work together on site each morning to colour the mural. Afternoons will be dedicated to free art and design workshops facilitated by Russell at Oasis (118 Grant St). All materials will be supplied. These workshops will cover such skills development as Chinese brush painting techniques, as well as tone, form, perspective and in particular how to layer paint to create depth. Murrindindi Shire-based filmmakers David and Evi are facilitating the filmic storytelling over both weekends to make a short movie of the exercise. Passing of Bruce Callander ■ A service to celebrate the life of Mr David Bruce Callander will be held on Friday (April 7) at 1pm at the Yea Recreation Reserve clubrooms, followed by a burial at the Yea Cemetery. Arrangements are in the hands of William Matthews Funerals. Bruce passed away peacefully at the Yea Hospital on Saturday (April 1), aged 73 years. He had been a patient at the Repatriation Hospital, Heidelberg. He was husband of Pauline for 48 years. He was father of Meagan and Anthony, and father-in-law of Jennifer. He was grandfather of Louis and Nina. Bruce was a popular Yea district man. He participated in local sport including with the Football Club and Golf Club. Tigers President Brad Watts told members: “ The Callander family are valuable members of our local community. This is a difficult time for the family and I'm sure we can provide a fitting farewell for Bruce.”

Forum raises school concerns ■ The community forum at Kinglake raised concerns about the lack of a local high school and loss of connectivity among local youth. These were cited by members of the public to Councillors major factors in Kinglake Ranges community disconnection. Murrindindi Shire last week hosted a series of 'Have Your Say' forums with 52 Kinglake residents attending Tuesday (Mar. 28) night’s forum at the Kinglake Community Centre. The evening, hosted by Anne Leadbeater, used the 'world café' method using four focus groups to discuss three key questions across eight tables. ■ What do you like about living in your community?' ■ What would make your community a better place to live?' ■ What do you think the new Murrindindi Shire Council should focus on?' Community forums were also held across Murrindindi Shire in Alexandra (Mar. 27), Marysville (Mar. 30) and Yea (Apr. 1). "There was such a buzz and enthusiasm around the room," said Anne Leadbeate. "(It's) great to see so many people out and engaging with their communities" Cr Eric Lording, spokesman for table one, stated the evening was "a really interesting way of doing things". "I think we've got some really good stuff … now we just got to make absolutely sure we do something with it," Cr Lording said. Following the discussions, an issue often raised during Kinglake's Have Your Say open forum was a lack of connectivity for local children who must travel 'off the (Kinglake) hill' to secondary school in Yea, Diamond Creek, Whittlesea, Seymour or elsewhere. Whilst "a high school is a State Government matter the lack of one does have a significant impact on the local community," spokesman for said Stuart McConnelly,m spokesman for another focus group. "This causes local families including both long term residents and families new to the area to move away from Kinglake to be closer to their children's secondary school." "Whilst not a council issue, perhaps we could advocate with the State Government," Ms Leadbeater said. Another issue raised was road safety, especially during Kinglake's winter fogs and the need - though again a State Government responsibility- for yellow line marking. Rotarian Elaine White arrived in her former Air Force uniform. Cr. Lording spoke on his RAAFResearch Scientist experiences. He was dressed for the part, uniform, helmet and sword. Elaine White complemented his presence by attending in her RAAF uniform. When Elaine approached Eric hand saluted; he did a VIP ceremonial sword response to her salute. Eric was an ex-dairy farmer studying in Melbourne when conscription for the Vietnam War was announced. He decided to join the RAAF to become an Engineering Officer. Some 2000 applied. He did four years of officer training and engineering study, originally signing up for Mechanical Engineering and then being ordered immediately to take the Electrical Engineering stream instead. He later found out that this was because the F111 aircraft was coming which needed people with electrical and aeronautical engineering experience due to the aircraft being the first ‘fly-by-wire’ computer controlled aircraft. He was then sent to Aeronautical Research Laboratories at Fishermen’s Bend for five years, gaining experience in the Transonic Wind Tunnel . He showed two videos: ejection seat training rig (explosive), and explosive ejection seat leaving aircraft. Another side of high performance flight is the effects of G Force on the body. You must force the air into your lungs with each difficult breath. Terry Hubbard had the honour of thanking Eric. He said after the 2009 fires Eric was project manager for the Murrindindi Shire Council and tended to break the rules and get things done because of his rebellious nature. - Contributed

CHURCH NEWS The Rev. Michelle Wood has been posted to St Luke's Anglican Church Yea to assist Fr Thomas Leslie. “I am married to the Rev. Paul Wood, who is based at St John's Alexandra,” Michelle told The Local Paper. “Paul and I have five grown children- only one still at home and is completing VCE this year. “We live on 22 acres of land comprised of bush and hills just out of Mansfield. There we grow vegetables, live off solar and rain water attempting to minimise our eco-footprint. It is a beautiful place and a simple lifestyle. “I have almost completed a PhD in creative writing and written my first novella. It is about the spiritual life, a poetic prose meditation on love “When not at St Luke's Yea, I work as a Family Counsellor with couples, children and families. I have worked in this area for the past 20 years. “Initially I trained as an Occupational Therapist but went on to complete postgraduate studies in Family Therapy. “I am keenly interested in social justice, inclusion and dignity for all people. I hope my time of ministry will foster in every way efforts to bring people healing, peace and unity. “In the past few months I have enjoyed visiting residents at Rosebank and have felt warmly welcomed by the people of Yea. “In preparing for Easter, I have put my creative writing skills to the test to compose a Litany for Peace. “The litany is set to the music and poetry of the late Leonard Cohen and features songs from his last album You Want It Darker. “All are welcome to attend this experimental litany on Good Friday (April 14) 6.30pm7.30pm, St Luke's Yea. It will be a candle lit meditative service for peace in our world and in ourselves,” Michelle said.

Data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare revealed Victoria is losing more foster carers than it’s able to recruit. ■ Inspector Troy Hargadon has refuted claims there is a crime wave, or law and order crisis, in the Mansfield Shire. Crime on rise
■ The Crime Statistics Agency of Victoria has released their latest figures, revealing a 35.58 per cent increase in the number of offences in Strathbogie Shire in 2016. The crime rate in the shire has increased from 4834.1 per 100,000 head of population in 2015, to 6480.2 in 2016, with some significant increases in certain areas of crime. Assaults in the area went up from 45 in 2015, to 59 recorded cases in 2016; an increase of 31per cent. Theft was up significantly as well, going from 144 cases to 185 in the same time period, increasing 28.5 per cent. Other areas of concern were in sexual offences (up 46.4 per cent), property damage (38.7 per cent) and weapons offences (142.9 per cent). - Euroa Gazette

For winning the bowling average, a shaving outfit (donated by Mr Robinson) was presented to Mr S. Reeves. To a veteran cricketer, Mr Jack Murphy, was presented a life membership of the club. The occasion was suitably marked by the gift of a gold medallion. Dancing was enjoyed, Mr McLaine acting as M.C.
