Holly, pet dog of Yea resident Gayle Branch, was ‘put down’ after the sad incident. The Local Paper has been told that a Murrindindi Shire ranger attended the scene, and will deal with the matter. Yea residents took to social media at the weekend to express their condolences, and call for action against the offending dogs and their owner. “ I hope the owner is held to account in a big way,” was typical of the comments.

■ Allegations which question the integrity of Murrindindi Council’s financial planning processes and decision making have been addressed by Shire CEOMargaret Abbey. MsAbbey submitted an 18-page document to the Legislative Council’s Environment and Planning Committee, following allegations by Cr Eric Lording and ex-Cr Chris Healy. Ms Abbey said that an allegation by Cr Lording and M r Healy that greater rate revenues allowed by the Essential Services Commission were raised “by an accounting trick” was “clearly not correct”. “This distinction between an increase in the rate (that is, rate cap variation) and rate revenue was pointed out to both Councillors on a number of occasions,” said MsAbbey. Ms Abbey said the Committee had confirmed that Council

Ms Abbey said Council’s reserves stood at $13.94 million, as at 2015-16. One reserve account was $5.6 million for significant upgrades to Council landfill in Alexandra. Other reserves included those for the Alexandra Community Leisure Centre, ● Margaret Abbey, CEO data had been “reliable and meaningful”. Murrindindi Council had been allowed a 4.3 per cent rate increase, despite a rule by Premier Daniel Andrews that increases should be capped at 2.5 per cent. Supplementary rates are excluded from the rate cap, Ms Abbey said. Ms Abbey said that an allegation that Council’s motivation in adopting its Rating Strategy was to “outsmart” the introduction of rate capping was not supported by the evidence of the process. Allegations about excessive Council reserves were “all incorrect,” Ms Abbey said.

● Bill Wilson ■ Former Yea Shire President, Bill Wilson, died in Adelaide on Sunday (Apr. 9). Bill was prominent in the Lions Club of Yea, as was his late wife Valerie (nee Callander). Both served as Presidents. The couple were keen community workers. Bill was a keen supporter and volunteer for the Yea Football Club. As a builder, Bill was responsible for a number of houses and commercial buildings in the Yea district. Sincere condolences to the family. Vale: David ‘Bruce’ Callander ■ Sisters Janet Hazleman and Dorothy Gulliford, supported by Daryl Callander, presented this tribute to the late Bruce Callander at a service held at the Yea Recreation Reserve on Friday (Apr. 7): David Bruce Callander was born in Yea on March 22, 1944, sixth of eight children to Harman and Vicky Callander. He was known by his middle name Bruce - which was a normal thing to do in this family! He was a cheeky, freckled, redhaired kid who had a whole group of friends in Melbourne Rd and Duke St where their family homes were. In Duke St there were eight Callander children living in a small house at number 4 and eight Wearne children living next door at number 6. Further up the road there were McCarthys, Thomsons and Wentworths. There were in excess of 26 kids in the short street. This provided hours of fun, playing in the neighbours’ hedges, kicking the footy in the vacant block across the road and having big bonfires at the end of the street. Even as a child Bruce loved clothes. His mum would put his clothes out for the day and he would change them at least twice a day. When you didn't have many clothes this was extravagant! Bruce was a man who loved to go shopping, a very rare trait for a man. He has over 57 shirts, seven suits, several jackets and lots of shoes. He always took pride in how he looked. Bruce worked in just two jobs for his entire working life. After leaving school at 14, he went to work for Keith and Ruth Pollard at the Yea River Quarry. He loved this job and held the Pollards in very high regard. This also started his fascination with rocks and stones. He collected all sorts of rocks and stones, pretty colours, unusual shapes. His sister recalls Bruce having big jars full of water and shining stones. His garden had lots of rocks- on the driveway, around borders and in gardens. In 1973 Bruce left the quarry and went to work for the Yea Shire. He had a good work ethic and made life long friends while there. He retired in 2003. Bruce was a great swimmer and loved the water. He swam competively for the Yea Swimming Club, winning lots of trophies. He taught his sister Janet to swim.
At Francis St we always had family pools. Bruce always loved cars and took pride in washing and taking care of them. Always Holdens (starting with a FC and finishing with his current carthe latest model Holden Commodore Calais). Friends he grew up with remember he was always washing his car on the front lawn of Duke St. Bruce washed his car and his kids' cars for every occasion. Even when friends of his kids came to visit in Francis St he would get them to drive their cars up on the lawn and wash them. Bruce loved going to the tip. He always came home with a bigger load than he went with. He collected an array of things from the tip, always spending time
● Bruce Callander in his shed to put them back together or paint them. Bruce had four main loves: his family his gardens, his cars and his music. Not always in that order! He had a record player and speakers hooked up outside under the verandah and liked nothing better than playing his favourite records, loudly, for the neighbours to hear. He loved Neil Diamond, John Denver, Vera Lynn, The Seekers, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Billy Joel and Everly Brothers. He loved going to concerts and although not very well or mobile he made it to the Neil Diamond concert in Melbourne just last year. Bruce loved his garden. He spent hours tending to lawns and plants. He propagated cuttings, sharing them with friends and family. He took such pride in the presentation of his
garden and was proud as punch when he was invited by the Rotary Club tobe a part of their Open Garden weekend in 2014. He liked to paint, initially everything was mission brown later Heritage green became his favourite colour. He painted the fences, the outdoor table and chairs and all the pot plants. He also regularly cut the lawns of his kids, Meagan has many memories of Bruce riding his ride on mower up Raglan St to cut her lawns and he only just mastered not flicking lawn cuttings into her pool. In 1964 when Bruce was 20 he had a serious football accident. He was shirt fronted after marking the ball during a game at Yea. He lost part of his bowel and his kidneys were crushed, which led to
kidney malfunction later in life. This accident prevented Bruce from playing football but he was always an active member of the Yea Football Club. Bruce married Pauline Canty in 1969. They bought the house that they still live in in Francis St. Meagan was born in 1970 and Anthony in 1973. His family were his life and he was very proud of everything they achieved. When his grandchildren Louis and Nina arrived he was so proud. He loved spending time with them and adored everything about them. He was the proudest Poppy! Bruce had a series of health issues. He started kidney dialysis three days a week, for five hours at a time in Seymour on his 60th birthday 2004. This became a way of life for him and he made the most of this restrictive lifestyle, making good friends with the nurses, always potting plants for them and sharing his family photos and stories. The staff at Seymour became a family to Bruce and made his time hooked up to the dialysis machine more tolerable. Standing by Bruce's side for over 50 years was his devoted wife Pauline, fondly known as Chick. She put up with a lot because he was an impatient, demanding man and required a lot of care towards the end. Pauline never complained, she nursed him, transported him and kept up to speed with his ailments and treatments, often informing doctors and nurses about what he needed. On Sunday, March 26, after much consideration, Bruce decided to stop dialysis treatment. We were so grateful that he could return to Yea Hospital, where he received the most lovely care, for his final days. On his return to Yea the ambulance drivers drove Bruce to his home so he could have one last look around his garden and pick apples from his laden apple tree. He arrived at Yea Hospital and surrounded by his family enjoyed one last happy hour - drinking rum and making the most of the fact that he was no longer on a restricted liquid diet. After long suffering he is now resting peacefully, and while we are all very sad, we are very grateful that he chose his ending and that he was surrounded by those he loved. There will be one mighty happy hour happening up there at the moment

Tourney woes ■ Everything looks set for the smooth running of the 89th Annual Yea Easter Tennis Tournament starting on Good Friday (April 14), and running until Easter Monday (April 17). A few decades ago, things weren’t so easy. In the 1940s, the Yea newspaper’s columns were full of local debate as to whether tennis should be allowed on Sundays. There was fierce argument whether such exertion complied with Christian teachings of the time.
Fast forward
■ Flick the calendar to 2017, and the Yea Tennis Club has tournament attractions including live music, wood fired pizzas, and social tennis under lights on Saturday. The had court is finished and will be available for warm-ups. Breakfast will be available on Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings. The Club has also been trying to arrange billetd accommodation for out-of-towners.

■ Thieves took a colour television and video recorder after they broke their way into Yea Primary School. Head Teacher/Principal Geoff Warren said the thieves removed louvre windows to the School’s multi-purpose room. The two items were valued at $1380.
Apex complaint
■ Noreen Garlick, Yea Shire Hall keeper, lodged a complaint with Yea Council about Apex Club of Yea members. She told Councillors that Apex members seemed to have their own key for the Hall. Cr David Lawson said the Club worked hard for the community. Crs Dougal Drysdale and Ian Bell said hall bookings needed to be made.
$500 for Kinglake
■ The Kinglake District Community Association received a $500 grant from the State Department of Sport. The grant provided for a Youth Drop-In Centre program, said Whittlesea MLA Max McDonald.

The history-making bull calf wasw by the US born sire, L1 Challenger, and was from the imported female BB Mis Domino 5027, who was first in the 18-20 months class for Lowanna at the Melbourne Royal in the previous year.

■ Emergency accommodation for Ken and Elaine Brown, the proprietors of the Kinglake West General Store was permitted by Yea Shire Council. The entire store needed to be pulled down, rather than re-construction proceeding into two halves. “I think these emergency circumstances need to be recognised,” said Cr Ian Sharp.

■ We printed a 1937 clipping: “Murrindindi has produced its first League footballer in the person of Lindsay McLure, who is playing for Footscray. “Lindsay played his first game with the seniors on Saturday against Essendon and succeeded in getting two goals. “According to metropolitan dailies, ‘he gave a display worthy of a seasoned league player’.”

Photo: Facebook/Alan Thorley/Yea and District Historical Society ■ Alan Thorley, who curates the Yea and District Historical Society social media pages, has unearthed this photo of the Doogalook Post Office-Hotel-Store. Alan says it was opened in 1877 by Michael and Ann Kemp on their property at the corner of Goulburn Valley Hwy and Dairy Creek Rd. Michael operated a store of the Ghin Ghin goldfields. The business at the corner was known as Kemp’s Hotel. Doogalook’s original owner, John Cotton, died at Yea in 1883, and Ann Kemp took over before transferring the licence to Elizabeth Bryant in 1887. She ran the hotel until 1892, when it was transferred to John Francis of Dairy Creek. The hotel ceased in 1895, and the Post Office was reenamed as Homewood Post Office. There is local debate over the date of the Post Office closure.

Original works of traditional art, woodwork, photographs and other local craft are on sale. Artists who are well known worldwide exhibit at this event with a wide range of mediums used. This year, the judge is water colour artist, Ron Muller. Ron will the demonstrating artist on Saturday (Apr. 15) and Sunday (Apr. 16) from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Ron is widely recognised as an outstanding professional artist and teacher. He has been a tutor at the Doncaster Templestowe Art Society for many years and has conducted workshops in Australia and overseas, particularly Tuscany and France. The major raffle prize is a painting by Ron of a scene at Wandillagong. Festival claims challenged Sir, The foray by Mr Salter of Kew, aimed at the Tanglewood Festival (Local Paper, Mar. 29): I feel is totally over the top with unsubstantiated accusations against the credibility of this great local event. As a neighbour to the event, I have always (twice) approved to the Murrindindi Shire Council of its being held and as a local tourist operator have received the benefits of it taking place, by increased visitation to our own business. Conversing with other local businesses in the Thornton and Taggerty areas, they also have benefitted by this event, with increased income due to the visitors coming to the Festival. Because of the time committed by the event organisers to establish this event, their commitment to contributing to the local community goes beyond the four days of the event; working bees during the year and purchasing local products and service businesses, means a ongoing injection of income into our local communities that would not be normally there; the Tanglewood Festival is a positive development and fits well with fostering and appreciating the beauty our area offers. As a participant for two days, the comments of drug affected people being out of control and children being uncared for is totally incorrect and it was pleasing to see how well behaved the crowd was in just having fun. Mr Salter should look into his own backyard before he starts casting rocks and boulders over the fence of neighbours and question the ecological damage that has taken place under his guidance, on the once beautiful Rubicon River Flats. - Ken Deacon, Rubicon

Sir, Daniel Andrews's expanded drug court will see offenders given free footy tickets and supermarket vouchers just for complying with drug treatment orders that were imposed so they could avoid jail. It's no surprise that Daniel Andrews once again is putting the rights of offenders before law-abiding Victorians and victims. Law-abiding Victorians have to work hard so they can afford to take their families to the footy or buy goods from the supermarket. If addicts who have broken the law need to be bribed with free footy tickets before they'll
comply with their drug treatment orders, they shouldn't be on the program. They should only be on this program because they want to do it for themselves and their family and friends, not because they want to go to the MCG and see a free game of footy. What is Victoria coming to under Daniel Andrews when people have to be bribed to obey the law? ● Matyas Babos ■ A funeral service to honour the life of Matyas Babos will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Yea, today (Wed., April 12) at 11am, followed by burial at Yea Cemetery, advises Simplicity Funerals, Reservoir. Mr Babos, 79, formerly of Francis St, Yea, went missing in August last year. SES, CFA and other emergency service crews conducted a wide search of the area. ■ EildonMLA Cindy McLeishhas slammed the Andrews Labor Government following revelations the Chair of a special ministerial advisory committee on wild dogs has resigned. As reported in the Weekly Times, Harriet Shing, Labor's Upper House Member for Eastern Victoria, was appointed to chair the government's wild dog advisory committee. She has now quit, claiming she is too busy to take up the position. "It has been 18 months since the Minister sacked the committee appointed by the Coalition government and instigated a review of wild dog management. In that time nothing has been achieved," Ms McLeish said. “In October last year, the Government back- flipped forming a new ministerial advisory committee, but since then no appointments to the committee have been made. "The Minister has been completely incompetent in dealing with wild dogs and the impact they are having on farmers' productivity. She can't even find someone else on her team to champion the issue." "The Andrews Labor Government's weakening of wild dog management has left numbers out-of-control, while attacks on livestock continue to take an emotional and financial toll on landowners," Ms McLeish said.
Steam fun at Yea
■ Local railway enthusiasts were invited to Lance Adams’s Range Rd Yea Valley Garden Railway last Thursday (Apr. 6) for the running of a unique live steam scale model of a 2-6-2 Baldwin side tank engine. The aim was to run the model on the extensive garden layout, which has more than 700 feet of main line and subsidiary track. “I used to operate this class of locomotive for the Victorian Railways and ETRB (Puffing Billy) for over four decades,” Lance told The Local Paper. An operator’s certificate is required to run this type of unit. Late last month, Ms McLeish told State Parliament of the inaugural event: “The Kinglake Festival Amongst the Falls was recently held over the long weekend, with the theme ‘A celebration of living well in the Kinglake Ranges’,” Ms McLeish told the Legislative Assembly. “Each day had a different theme which aimed to showcase Kinglake: health and vitality, clash of the clans, artistry and creativity, and local cuisine and produce. “I attended the berries and pancake breakfast at Ellimatta Youth Centre and was encouraged by the efforts of the young people — a special mention to Bass and Jess,” Ms McLeish said.
Students at Shrine ■ Students from local schools will be able to attend Legacy's 86th Annual Student Commemoration Serviceat the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne at 11am on Friday,April 21. High school and primary school students from Mansfield, Merrijig, Jamieson, Alexandra, Eildon, Marysville, Taggerty,Yea, and Flowerdale, accompanied by teachers and Legatees, will join thousands of other students who have registered to participate. Legacy Patron, Linda Dessau , Governor of Victoria, will attend with other dignitaries. Students will receive a sprig of rosemary for remembrance, school groups will lay wreaths, and there will be an RAAF fly over. The Alexandra/Yea/Mansfield Legacy Group, assisted by the RSL Sub-Branches, is organising the trip so local students don't miss out on this special experience. Seats are still available on the bus at no cost to families. Parents are advised to contact their child's school on the first day of term for further details. The coach will leave on Friday April 21 from the Old Station Mansfield at 6:15am, the Alexandra RSL at 7:15am and the High St Yea bus stop at 8am. There will be seats for about 35 students who will be selected by their schools from those who nominate. Return timings are still to be determined but likely Yea 3.30pm, Alexandra 4.15pm and Mansfield 5:15pm.

Surprises at Legacy ■ Alexandra local, Robert 'Bob' Benghamy, will continue for another year as President of the Alexandra/ Yea/Mansfield Group of Melbourne Legacy. The Legacy Group Annual Changeover Luncheon on Sunday, April 2, was attended by the President of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee Graeme Plumridge. Graeme presented a 25-year Service Certificate to popular Alexandra Legatee, Tom Steele. Peter Gardner of Mansfield, and Anne Benghamy of Alexandra, were taken completely by surprise when Legatee Plumridge called them forward to receive a Friend of Legacy certificate. While not Legatees, both have spent many hours in support of local Legacy activities for War Widows and their children. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Alexandra RSL and to Clarrie Glass of Alexandra in recognition of their generous support to the Legacy Group. The Presidents of the Mansfield, Alexandra and Yea RSLs each presented a cheque to assist the Legacy Group with the cost of a coach so local students can attend the 86th Students Commemoration at the Melbourne Shrine on Friday, April 21. This significant commemoration service is held annually on the Friday before ANZACDay. News Briefs Possum campaign ■ Samantha Dunn, Greens spokeswoman, says the political party is this month ramping up its Leadbeater’s Possum campaign. “It’s Leadbeater’sAwareness Month, and while the Deputy PM has called for more logging in our native forests, directly risking the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum, we’re ready to ramp up this vote-changing campaign,” said Ms Dunn, who is Eastern Metropolitan Region MLC. “In 1961, the Leadbeater’s Possum was rediscovered, having been thought extinct up until that moment. “Now, Barnaby Joyce is calling for the critically endangered status to be downgraded to allow for more logging in our native forests, putting the possum at increased risk of extinction. “Voters in key winnable seats for the Greens indicated that they would switch their vote over this issue. This means that there’s no way they’ll be able to ignore us. Working together, we can win the campaign for a Great Forest National Park once and for all,” Ms Dunn said.

1:31 time for 14k’s ■ Jenn Callander of Yea achieved a time of 1:31 for the 14.6-km journey in the Run For The Kids event held on Sunday (Apr. 9). The course took in the Domain Tunnel in Melbourne, Westgate Freeway, Bolte Bridge, Docklands, Ethihad Stadium, the Central Business District, past Rod Laver Arena to the MCG area. The annual event is held as a fundraiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
Deaths at Woori ■ Two people died following a single car crash in Woori Yallock on Sunday (Apr. 9). It is believed a4WD was travelling on Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Rd just after 2.30pm when the vehicle left the road, rolled and struck a tree. Two rear passengers died at the scene, a third rear passenger has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition. The driver and front seat passenger were ransported to hospital.

Lights needed at M’worth, Cathkin Sir, I am writing this letter as it appears the only way to get Councils or Government bodies to take notice is through the Press, activists or pressure groups. The individual is ignored. My purpose of writing to you is vecause around once a month we go to the Chinese Restaurant in Yea, and on our way home we turn in to Whanregarwen Rd, and a lot of times if there is fog or mist around, it is very hard to see the turn-off. I have written to the Council a few times to see if they could approach Vic Roads re installing an overhead light there, and also at the turn-off to Alexandra at Cathkin, but I have never had a reply. I was hoping maybe by approaching you, and also if you agreed with my suggestion, they may take notice. I feel that it’s only a matter of time and there will be a bad accident there. Community Kitchen opens ■ Yea is set to have its own Community Kitchen from WedA Community Kitchen is a group of people who meet on a regular basis to plan, cook and share healthy, affordable meals. Each person puts in a small amount (approximately $5 each) towards ingredients and then takes home a few meals to eat or put in their freezer. “It gives people new meals to try, it's fun and is for everyone, young, old, rich, poor, chefs and novices,” says one of the organisers, Zanni Waldstein, Food and Garden Projects, at Yea Community House. “It is a great way to pick up some new recipes, to cook with other people and to get a few meals prepared for the week that you can freeze, for an affordable price. “We are looking for four to eight people for the first group. “Sessions will be on Wednesday afternoons from 12 Noon2pm, held in the Yea Council Chambers, in the back of the Yea Community House and Yea Library/ Council building). Booking are essential.” First meeting dates will be May 3 , May 31 and June 21. The start-up of the Yea Community Kitchen is being supported by the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust. Sessions will be every 3-4 weeks with the view to going fortnightly or starting another group if there are enough keen people. Workshop at V. Town ■ Agriculture Victoria is conducting on-farm workshops to demonstrate how electronic identification (EID) technology and data can be used to make better management decisions. The workshops for sheep and goat producers will provide an opportunity to learn from independent experts about the potential uses of electronic tagging and related technology. It will also provide opportunities for local farmers to talk to the various EID equipment and software manufacturers, all in one place. Warren Straw, Agriculture Victoria’s Director of Sheep Electronic Identification, said that producers will get the opportunity to hear from other farmers already using these digital technology options in their farming systems. “This round of workshops is the chance to see the practical and beneficial steps involved in transitioning across to electronic tagging technology.” “The workshops will cover a number of topics including understanding how the data can inform farm management decisions, practical ways to overcome any implementation issues, and the opportunity to learn directly from experienced fellow producers,” Mr Straw said. Next local workshop will be on Thursday May 4, at Violet Town. Producers interested in attending the workshops can get more in-

In addition to supporting producers through these on-farm workshops, Agriculture Victoria has established a new protocol enabling rural distributors to order electronic NLIS (sheep) tags on behalf of their producer clients. Using Agriculture Victoria’s online tag ordering portal, rural distributors can now act for sheep and goat producers and complete the ordering process for them, providing another way for farmers to order their electronic tags. Any charges for this ordering service need to be arranged between distributors and their clients and are separate to Agriculture Victoria charges. Questions regarding the new protocol can be directed to Agriculture Victoria’s NLIS toll-free helpline on 1800 678 779 during office hours.

Steve Herbert quits ■ Former Andrews Government minister Steve Herbert has officially resigned from State Parliament. State Governor Linda Dessau informed the Victorian Parliament on Friday (Apr. 7) that Mr Herbert officially stood down on Thursday (Apr. 6). Mr Herbert had most recently been a Northern Victoria member of the Legisaltive Council. His early retirement comes after after quitting the Cabinet for chauffeuring his pet dogs around at taxpayers' expense. Mr Herbert told the Parliament he no longer had "100 per cent to give" after a 15-year political career representing the seats of Eltham and Northern Victoria. Mr Herbert resigned as the training and skills and corrections minister last November following revelations he used his taxpayer-funded car to ferry the dogs, Patch and Ted, between his Melbourne home and Trentham country house. Mr Herbertsaid political life was both rewarding and gruelling, noted the Herald Sun. "To be a politician in the spotlight can be tough, particularly on your family and friends," he said. Mr Herbert was overpaid by State Parliament for a second residence allowance in late 2014 which he reimbursed before the issue was made public.

Child’s sad death ■ General regret was felt in the district yesterday when it was learned that Keith Thomas Smith, aged 2½ years, the son of Mr and Mrs R. A. Smith, of Wollert, had been accidentally drowned. About 3 o'clock in the afternoon Keith wandered away from the house with a cattle dog. A little while later the mother became anxious and went to look for the boy. She saw the cattle dog returning alone and her anxiety became greater. About this time Mr J. Mason, of Woodstock, called at the house .and he assisted Mrs Smith in the search. After about 15 minutes Mr Mason found the child floating face down in a waterhole about 400 yards from the house. Dr Martin, of Reservoir, was summoned by telephone, and he with Mrs Hehr, of Epping, who is a trained nurse, endeavoured for a long time to. restore breathing, but. without .success ● Steve Herbert, former MLA for Eltham
Rural award to city woman ■ State Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford hasawarded the 2017 Rural Women’s Award to someone from West Melbourne. Member for Euroa, Steph Ryan, has slammed the move, describing it as an insult to women across rural Victoria. Two of the four finalists in the awards were city-based, with one from West Melbourne and one from Frankston South.
“It is just extraordinary that a woman who actually lives and works in a rural community was not named the winner of the Rural Women’s Award,” Ms Ryan said. Ms Ryan said she did not doubt that the city-based finalists, including the winner, were impressive women. “The criteria should be tightened so only women who live and work in rural Victoria are eligible,” Ms Ryan said.

Warrant for Teagan Police action after K’lake theft ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Teagan Winduss. The 28-year-old is wanted on warrant in relation to a burglary and theft in Kinglake last year. She is known to frequent Glen Iris, Prahran, Melbourne CBD and Brunswick. Winduss is described as about 165cm tall, with a thin build, brown hair and fair skin. Investigators have released an image of Winduss in the hope someone may have information on her current whereabouts. ■ Murrindindi Shire's Fire Danger Period finishes on Tuesday (April 18). This means Murrindindi Shire remains in the fire danger period and fire restrictions still apply until then. During the Council fire amnesty period, from April 22 to May 6, Murrindindi Shire Council will also be offering free green waste disposal. Mayor Cr Charlie Bisset encouraged residents to make good use of the free green waste disposal at the Recycling and Recovery Centres. "This option has been really popular with our Shire's residents, as they can get rid of their grass clippings, leaves, garden prunings, branches and tree trunks no bigger than 300mm in diameter and no longer than 1.5m," she said. Cr Bisset said while the fire amnesty period allows residents in townships to carry out small open-air burns, there are important regulations around them. "Only vegetative material can be burnt and fires should be no bigger than one metre diameter by one metre high. "Fires should be supervised by an adult at all times and we also emphasise the importance of keeping fire extinguishing equipment on hand at all times. "Out of common courtesy, you should also let your neighbours know of your burn plans and ensure your fire does not cause a smoke disturbance. "Nuisance fires can be caused by too much smoke or the illegal burning of materials such as furniture or mattresses. “ If these fires are reported our Local Laws officers will attend and penalty notices may be issued", said Cr Bisset. From May 6, if you are in a residential area and need to burn off, you will require a permit from Council. If you are in a Farming Zone (which generally means areas outside town limits), a permit is not required between April 18 and the start of Council Fire Restrictions on October 15.

■ Thornton land owner Greg Salter has intensified his objections to the Tanglewood Music Festival on adjoining land, with a letter to Murrindindi Shire Council: “Dear Mayor Bisset, Fellow Murrindindi Councillors and the Planning Department. “Just following up on the telephone conversation on Friday afternoon with Councillor Jackie Ashe. “As pointed out, I am appalled at the lack of concern Murrindindi Planning Department has for its rate-paying constituents. “It obviously favours out-of-town permit holders holding an event for three days with little or no regard to the unsightly environmental mess left behind to the detriment of residents and the amenity of the land. This for 12 months/three years. “As Councillor Jackie Ashe told me late Friday, the reason most people are drawn to Murrindindi is its rural outlook and pristine views. “So why is Murrindindi Planning Department now coaching the applicant on how to use the planning scheme to get around Council’s own planning permit and conditions? (Conditions listed on the permit issued by Murrindindi Council). “I was told at Friday’s debriefing by Melissa Crane, Senior Planning Officer, that the stages currently still erected, which should have been removed 14 weeks ago, are now hay sheds. No roof and no building permit! “I was also told that temporary structures erected for the event are now being re-classified to rural fencing. Water tanks spread all over the paddocks for festival goers water supply, are now fire-fighting tanks. Shipping containers brought in for the festival are now staying. The Applicant stated that they had nothing to do with the festival, and only required a simple permit. “Murrindindi’s permit clearly states that all temporary fixtures are to be removed within two weeks of the festival concluding. This current action does not meet planning permit conditions. “Why should a three-day event affect me for three years and possibly indefinitely if the permit is re-issued after the three years? “Murrindindi should immediately revoke the permit and have the site returned to farm land as it was prior to the festival. “The permit holder has no respect for adjoining land owners, or the community, or the amenity of the land. All they have are dollars in their sights. “I am therefore left with limited options in how I can deal with this situation. “Within 14 days of receipt of this communication, I require Council and the permit applicant to rectify the noncompliance’s with respect to the planning permit and the land. “If these matters are not addressed to my satisfaction within these 14 days I will be instructing my legal representatives to file concurrent applications under Section 87 and Section 114 of the Planning and Environment Act (1987) to seek to cancel the planning permit and seek enforcement directions from theVictorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “I note that this should be the responsibility of the Council however as an affected person I have the ability to make such applications and I reserve all rights in relation to making such applications. “I invite Mayor Bisset and all councillors to come to my property next week to inspect the mess and correct this anomaly. Murrindindi Planning Department and its enforcement officers, along with the Council, have an obligation to uphold permit conditions in the interest of good governance on behalf of all constituents. “I have attached two photos and my original email which raises a lot more concerns. The majority of these concerns were brushed under the carpet at Friday’s meeting. “At the risk of someone being seriously injured, or worst case scenario - a death - as I stated this was a Drug Festival - not a music festival – continuation of this event presents some very serious risks,” said Mr Salter in his March 27 letter.

AFL YARRA RANGES: DIVISION 2 SCOREBOARD YEA V KINGLAKE SENIORS Yea 13.7-85 defeated Kinglake 11.10-76 Yea has its season off to a great start, coming from behind to defeat arch rival Kinglake by eight points at home in a rematch of last year's preliminary final. Trailing by 27 points at half-time, the young Tigers rallied on the back of an inspired Riley Aldous in the midfield, with recruit Paddy Rattray slotting three goals for the quarter to turn the game on its head. Still 14 points behind at the final change, the hosts finished full of running to boot five last quarter majors to one and record Yea's first victory over Kinglake since 2014. Rattray and fellow newcomer Shaun Pearce were prominent targets inside 50 and nailed three goals apiece, while Dan Freeman was outstanding in the ruck, particuarly late in the contest when he took several crucial marks in defence. Aldous was superb both in the air and at stoppages around the ground, at one point winning three consecutive centre clearances in the third term, while Harrison Jarvie slotted two to go with a dominant performance in the midfield. Indi Kaak did a power of work in defence in just his second senior game with a series of clutch contested grabs and Lachie Beattie racked up possessions on the wing and converted an important major in the last quarter. Despite a poor showing in the first half, it was impressive that the young side were able to step up when their backs were against the wall, handing new coach Mark Beattie a win in his first game in charge. Yea Reserves kicked off its 2017 campaign in fine style, outclassing old foe Kinglake by 43 points at the Recreation Reserve. Despite a scrappy start that saw the home side lead by just three points at quarter time, the Tigers grabbed the ascendancy in the second term, controlling possession to stretch the margin to 16 points by half-time. A four goal to one second-half sealed the result as the Lakers struggled to keep in touch with a hard working Yea outfit that could have won by even more had their kicking for goal been a touch better. Recruit David Webb was excellent, booting two goals and racking up disposals at will, while his midfield mate Brendan Bullen did likewise in a brilliant display that included the sealing major. Dean Clue was stoic in the back half, Lindon Young started the match like a house on fire and Zac Pell was very influential in the ruck, dominating the hit-outs. It was a great sign for the Reserves, which lost several close matches at the start of 2016 which made their late charge to finals a difficult task. ALEXANDRA FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB REPORT ■ The AFL Yarra Ranges League Round 1 start of the 2017 season had finally arrived and the Alexandra Football/Netball Club hosted Belgrave for two games of football and four games of netball. A good crowd was in attendance to enjoy the sunshine as the Yarra Valley Magpies made their first visit to the Showgrounds since 2012. The Reserves team, with a good side selected on paper, never really lived up to the expectations in a scrappy game to open the season. After an even first half Belgrave, who appeared much fitter and stronger, were too good for Alex and ran out winners, 9.12 - 66 to 3.3 21. Alexandra welcomed some new players including Jake Coulson, Michael Heaysman, Will Ingram, John Pinni together with returning players Chris McKay and Jonathon Noy but relied on a few veterans like Corey Jack who still leads the way. Alex will improve as numbers increase at both levels but must regain the teamwork shown over the last couple of years to again make the Finals. The Seniors ran out in warm sunny conditions and all reserves and senior footballers from both clubs lined up with umpires, officials and supporters for a minute's silence to pay respect to five former Rebels players - Ian Alexander, Henry Dundas, Len Elward, Kevin Hedger and Russell Parsons who have passed away since last season, as well as a Belgrave official who had passed away recently. The game then got underway as the Rebels, with some regular players missing, began to the town end assisted by a swirly north-westerly wind, Scott Hill kicking the first goal after Brayden Norris received some late attention after delivering the ball. Stephen Steiner started well and won the ball from the centre allowing Callum Tranter to collect and goal on the run before Belgrave goaled at the hill end following a 50-metre penalty and Scott Heveren replied when he kicked Alexandra's third goal in his normal dashing style. The visitors got the next two goals before Stephen Steiner muscled the ball to Norris whose long kick was accurate and then Alexandra's fifth goal came from some clever roving as Ryan Carter was front and centre and forwarded to Jasper Rouget. Belgrave got the last goal of the quarter from a free and trailed by eight points. A free in the goal square 50 meters off the ball gave the visitors the lead temporarily until a series of well directed passes around the caravan park side of the ground found Hill for his second goal. A fine defensive mark by Jordan Purcell held up the visitors but they persisted and again goaled from a free kick before adding another two late goals, the last right on the siren which gave them a 12-point lead at the main break. The pace of the game had halved the umpiring ranks as only one central umpire was now fit enough to be on field for the second half. Alex needed a big third quarter but the wind had dropped off and Belgrave extended their lead as they kicked the first third quarter goal before Stephen Steiner finished his centre clearance with a goal. New ruckman Jacob Brereton was leaping high at the centre bounces and Norris taking advantage of his tap work forwarded to Luke Heard for a goal and Alex was back in the game. A free and 50-metre penalty to Matt Steiner resulted in Alexandra's next goal as Ben Cooper looked back to his 2015 form as he won the ball in close and levelled the scores. Despite the efforts of Will and Jack Goonan in defence, Belgrave again got the last two goals of the quarter to lead by 13 points at the last change. Will Goonan cleared to Norris whose long kick from near the scoreboard found Brent McDonald who marked in the goal-square. Michael Coombs made the most of a penalty and forwarded to Norris whose long kick was perfect as Alex again closed the gap. Both sides defended strongly until an out of character soft free resulted in Belgrave regaining the initiative with the next two goals. Rhys Steward kicked Alexandra's last goal but Belgrave were the winners 14.13 to 12.9. Alex now has a 21-day break before travelling to Yarra Junction and will come up fitter and stronger for round three. ■ The Yea Tigers were 15 points behind at threequarter time yet surprised many with an opening round win against last year’s runners-up Kinglake. Yea won by nine points as Kinglake ran out of stamina after half-time with, Yea's young players and new recruits celebrating an unlikely win. Kinglake opened the day’s play and kicked the first goal. Yea quickly responded with a behind and kicked their first goal 10 minutes into the first quarter. The Lakers’ Bailey Robinson soon responded with Kinglake's second goal before handballing to another player for Kinglake's third goal. Kinglake's playing coach Brad Wilkinson addressed the Kinglake players. "Our work rate has to stay at that high intensity (and) we need to rotate more so we've still got legs in those last five minutes. "We spoke about it before the game …that shouldn't be an issue from now on ...we'll put five or six goals on the board this quarter," Wilkinson said. Two minor melees opened the second quarter before Yea quickly kicked two goals which would be their only second-quarter majors. Kinglake then fired up kicking five goals before half-time. Opening the third quarter Yea's Indi Kaak kicked for goal, but missed to the right as Yea began catching up as Kinglake ran out of 'legs with Yea kicking four goals and two points to Kinglake two goals three points. Despite a 15-point lead at three-quarter time. Kinglake's tackle rate dropped to just six whilst Yea increased its forward presses to five. Yea 8.5 (53) Kinglake 10.8 (68). B-GRADE The B-Grade team took to the court with six new faces from last year’s line up. Chelsea Helder, Racheal Normington and Kate Elliott all step up from C-Grade whilst Rhi Aldous returned after spending last season overseas. Hannah Christie stepped in for the sidelined Lauren Cronk and newcomer to the club Reggie Bell played her first game in the Tigers dress. The first quarter belonged to Yea, dominating all over the court to race to a six-goal lead before Kinglake were able to score. Reggie relished in her first game, using great speed and body position in the goal third to score 17 goals. The feed in to her by Cindy Newcomen and Kate Elliott was first rate and Kinglake just couldn’t keep up. In defence Racheal and Rhi covered both the dangerous goalies well, refusing them any impact on the game. By quarter-time the Tigers had a very handy 15-goal lead. Kinglake improved from that point forward but Yea were able to capitalise at most of their opportunities and win each quarter marginally to push out the lead. After half-time Reg resumed her role at GS, hauling in the balls Cindy and Kate provided her. Chels and Hannah worked well alongside each other in defence, the latter using her closing speed to pick off many Kinglake attacks. The Tigers ran out comfortable winners in warm conditions to kick off a great start to the season. Well done girls. Yea 61 def Kinglake 40 Goals: C Hayes 25, R Bell, 24. A Akers 12 Best: R Aldous, C Hayes, R Bell Award: Rhiannon Aldous C-GRADE A great first hit out for the C-Grade girls who were strong right from the beginning. The Tigers team this year is a mix of experience and young guns. On court it’s amazing to see the team work together and the amount of leadership that everyone shows on and off court is beyond amazing. Fiona and Jess were strong under the post, with Jordan and Judy working hard in the midcourt. Defensively, Deb and Kim were unstoppable. Emily and Ruby both showed strong body on body throughout the whole game. Molly came on and created space and drive for her fellow teammates. It was a very low scoring game but in the end Yea showed how important it is to keep chipping away and not losing concentration. I believe, despite the win that this was an improved performance from our two practice matches and it showed how much talent we have throughout the whole Tiger team. Well done to all girls. What a great way to start our 2017 season. Deborah Schickerling plenty to work with. This group of 12started the season off with precision, racing away to an 11-1 quarter time lead over Kinglake. Kate Broadway was a standout at WD in this first quarter, picking off countless Kinglake attacks before they could reach the goal circle and in the mid court Rhi Apted and India Gillings provided strong options in Yea’s attacking half. Down in the Yea goal circle, Kinglake stood little chance against the tall timbers of Alicia O’Connor and Amy Smith- Jones who positioned well and shot with precision. The game was a lot more even over the middle two quarters with the Lakers adding some experience to their line-up. The Yea girls still worked hard, midcourters Tessa Walton, Ebony Keenan and Harriet Vlamis did a great job linking the play from defence to attack to give Amy and Molly Toulson plenty of looks at the goal post. Jill Hargreaves showed that she’ll be a real pick up for the club, her ability to read the play evident. She and Sarah Lobley were both solid in defence, making the Kinglake goal shooters work overtime for their shots. With a six-goal lead at the last break, the Tigers needed to finish off strongly and that they did, Leisa Peters a standout at GD in the last 10 minutes, controlling the back line and providing the drive down the court into attack. YEA NETBALL REPORT A-GRADE Well done to all the A-Grade girls who recorded an important first win. With the side similar to last years, all combinations worked well together and showed that from the get go. Importantly Yea got away to a great start with Soph Stares and Bridget O’Dwyer working together strongly. Sarah Armstrong and Chels Spagnolo continued pressure all the way down the court, opening up solid drives for Megan Leatham and Nikki Watts in our attacking end. Meg Sundblom was outstanding under the post and worked exceptionally well with Nikki. Coach Cindy Newcomen was able to to swing some changes all game, making the most of the

■ Some 14 players participated in the monthly medal event at Yea Golf Club on Saturday (Apr. 8). Rick Wills (6) with a fine 73 off the stick, nett 67, won on countback from Rob O'Halloran (17) for the Monthly Medal. Alan Pell (11) was third with nett 68. This was the second round of the Sichlau Trophy and Rick also won the putting competition with 24 putts. Peter Keast won the Club Award on countback from Carl and Bruce. There was no Nearest The Pin on the 11th and Rick secured a birdie on the 8th for a group free drink. The second round of pennant was played at Strathbogie on Sunday (Apr. 9) in trying conditions. Yea's opponent, Euroa, won the match 3.5 to 1.5. Johnathan Fisher won his match 4/3 and Alan Pell was square. Norman Cole and Greg and Brad Clements went down. On Wednesday (Apr. 5) freshly back from a week's golf and socialising at Merimbula, Russ Wealands (35points) led in a good field of 11 men to win the Stableford round. Bob Glenister also had 35 points but unfortunately for him scored 21 of his points on the front nine, thereby coming runner up. Johnathon Fisher was NTP on the 2nd. Vicky Butler (also fresh back from the trials and tribulations of Merimbula) and Karen Sangster carded excellent rounds in the Ladies Stroke event with nett 69s - with Karen winning this time on countback. With this win, Karen won the Trifecta - the Monthly Medal round, the first round of the Silver Spoon. Miranda Gill was NTP and also the winner of the putting competition using it just 22 times. - Gary Pollard
