The Yea Tigers U10s did an excellent job against St Marys at Kings Park Seymour.

St Mary's didn't have as many players as Yea so the little Tigers happily rotated and helped St Mary's out, so everyonehad a go.

Praise has been given to the players for showing great sportsmanship and the Tiger spirit.

St Mary's currently do not have any girls playing in their U10s, but after seeing what the girls can do they may try an recruit some.

Local News Open Gardens ■ Two special autumn gardens that are opening in Kinglake and Whittlesea at the end of May with Open Gardens Victoria.

Oak House Garden in Kinglake West has miraculously recovered since it was burnt in the 2009 Black Saturday fires. The owners have a wonderful collection of maples in their woodland garden and a fascinating array of cacti and succulents in their glass house. There are extensive lawns to picnic on and paths to wander through the beautiful recovered bushland. The owners have a photographic display of the garden before and after the fires.

Ivy Lea in Whittlesea is a spacious park-like garden with a superb collection of trees – many of which will be in autumn colour for the opening. There’s plenty for children to discover, with a quirky ‘train track’ path, chook house, vegie garden and lush lawns for running around. The owners are creating a festive weekend with musical performances and sales of cut flowers, local produce, ice cream and coffee.

Green Army at work ■ The third and final Green Army project has commenced and over the next four months this group of local young people will again be working throughout the Upper Goulburn region on environmental restoration projects on public and private land.

The team has been busy over the first two months doing a variety of work which has included assisting with a fox monitoring program for the King Parrot Catchment Fox Control Project by installing remote sensor cameras on 12 properties and then three weeks later retrieved the cameras and downloaded and recorded the data.

They also installed nest boxes along Andrews Creek in Taggerty and inspected nest boxes at a Land for Wildlife property in Toolangi and found Sugar Gliders occupying many of the boxes.

● Geoff Oliver ■ The townspeople of Yea will miss the cheeky humour of Geoff Oliver who passed away late last week at the Yea and District Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service will be held today (Wed., May 3) at 11am at the Grand Caledonian Hotel, Yea, followed by a wake.

A viewing is also scheduled at the same location, on the same day from 10am10.15am.

The Local Paper joins with the community in expressing condolences to the family on its profound loss.

MLA’s letter Sir, The Andrews Government must immediately rule out harvesting bans that would destroy Victoria's timber industry.

Reports in The Weekly Times indicate the Environment Minister is 'considering' a call from Friends of Leadbeater's Possum that would prevent Victoria's timber industry accessing regrowth timber.

21,000 Victorian workers rely on this industry, but they are under attack from a Labor Government more concerned with protecting greens preferences than local jobs.

Labor must conduct a comprehensive review of Leadbeater's possum populations in state reserves and national parks, so we can get a full picture that isn't only limited to the possum's abundance in timber coupes.

Research conducted by Victorian Government between 2010 and 2014 showed that numbers of possums identified in national parks, state forests, nest boxes and areas previously harvested for timber are particularly encouraging for the future of Victoria's faunal emblem.

With impending job losses in the Latrobe Valley, Daniel Andrews and Labor must ensure that further job losses do not spread to the Murrindindi Shire because of a poorly informed and ideologically driven policy shift.

Disappointing rail ■ Indi MHR Cathy McGowan says she is disappointed that funding for new rolling stock for the troubled Wodonga-Melbourne line was omitted from the State Government’s regional rail package.

“Once again people in North East Victoria are left waiting for trains,” Ms McGowan said.

Ms McGowan will hold the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews to his commitment to allocate funding to new rolling stock once the Federal Government commits funding to upgrade the rail line. “$20 million is better than nothing, and the signals do need upgrading, but ultimately we need more trains, more often,” Ms McGowan said.

“Now all eyes will be on the Federal Budget for a significant allocation of funding for the inland rail. I call on both the State and Federal governments to work together to ensure that the North East line gets an adequate share of that funding.”

Less bushfire risk ■ The Andrews Labor Government says it is is using innovative energy solutions to help keep communities safe from bushfires.

The $750 million Powerline Bushfire Safety Program is providing Stand-Alone Power System (SAPS) grants to targeted landowners in selected regional areas who opt-in to the initiative. roperties at the end of high voltage powerlines in the most acute bushfire-risk locations will be given the opportunity to go off the grid, by installing a SAPS. By choosing to go off the grid, these properties at the end of the line will allow the remaining powerline to be shorter, reducing bushfire risk, as well as increasing the reliability of their energy supply.

The SAPS grant will consist of renewable energy such as wind and solar panels, batteries for storage and back-up generators.

The Program was established in 2012 as a 10-year program to reduce bushfire risk.

Ex-Cr faces charges ■ Chris Healy, former Murrindindi Shire Councillor, is facing five charges related to alleged occurrences of misuse of position.

The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate, alleges that as a former councillor, on five separate occasions, Mr Healy attempted to gain an advantage by making improper use of information acquired while a councillor in written or oral submissions regarding Murrindindi Shire’s proposed rating strategy.

The Inspectorate began its investigation in March 2015.

“This investigation took a considerable time to complete due to the complex analysis of documents and the prioritisation of investigations into election offences in 2016,” the Inspectorate said.

“Misuse of position carries a serious penalty under the Act of 600 penalty units ($93,276) or up to five years imprisonment or both” - Inspectorate

We told you so ... a year ago ● The Local Paper told readers, 12 months ago, that the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate was investigating matters at Murrindindi Shire Council.

Answering a question from The Local Paper, the Council admitted that a municipal matter was being investigated by the Inspectorate.

Asked for comment, Sonia Heath of the Inspectorate, confirmed in May 2016, that this matter was being probed.

Population figures grow by 0.8% ■ Murrindindi Shire’s population has increased by 0.8 per cent over 12 months, advises the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The latest figures, released at the end of March, indicate that the population of Murrindindi Shire was 13,693 people, in 2015; up from 13,589 on the previous year.

It has taken seven years for Murrindindi to return to a total population statistic, similar to the pre-Black Saturday fires (2009).

The 2008 population number was 13,748. The 2009 figure is listed as 13,352.

The statistics are contained in the ABS Regional Population Growth figures where estimated residential populations are listed.

The fastest growing neighbouring municipalty to Whittlesea. Its population grew by 4.6 per cent, from 186,843 to 195,397.

Most of the growth in that

local government areas is thanks to developments in areas including Mernda, Laurimar, Doreen and South Morang.

To the west, Mitchell Shire, which includes areas such as Seymour, Broadford, Kilmore, Wandong and Wallan, population mumbers increased in 12 months by 2.0 per cent: from 38,394 to 39,143.

To the south, Yarra Ranges Shire scored a population gain in 12 months of 0.4 per cent, with the total rising from 150,036 to 150,661.

The Yarra Ranges Shire area includes region including Yarra Glen, Healesville, War-

burton, but also outer eastern suburbs including Lilydale, Mooroolbark, Ferntree Gully, Belgrave, and the Mountain District.

To the east, the Mansfield Shire recorded a 1.0 per cent population increase in the 2014 to 2015 years, rising from 8217 to 8300.

As well as the Mansfield township, the municipality includes localities including Bonnie Doon, Merton, Maindample, Goughs Bay, plus regions such as Tolmie, Barjarg, Howqua/Macs Cove, Jamieson, Merrijig and Woods Point.

Strathbogie Shire, headquartered at Euroa, saw a rise of just 0.1 per cent - from 9814 to 9826.

The only municiaplity in the region to record a population decrease in the year up to 2015 was Nillumbik, dropping by 0.4 per cent from 62,849 to 62,602.

It covers from St Andrews, Hurstbridge to Eltham and Greensborough.

● Hamilton Hume ■ This region is accomplished at celebrating anniversaries.

Alexandra’s 150th celebrations in March were testimony.

The region’s 200th birthday (white fella anniversary, anyway) is due in just seven years time.

It was in December 1824 that explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell found their way through Kanumbra, Molesworth, Yea (to be Muddy Creek for a while), parts of Flowerdale, and Strath Creek, over the Murchison Gap. Their expedition through the Goulburn region was not an easy one.

Is it too early for a local committee to be formed, and to start make early preparations for this area’s bicentenary.

Respect for Uncle

■ There seems to be increasing respect for our area’s original elders and people.

Mayor Cr Charlie Bisset mentioned at last Wednesday’s Murrindindi Shire meeting that the Council had won permission from his family to mention the name of Uncle Roy Patterson, who passed away last month.

“He was a valued member of our community and the Taungurung people,” Cr Bisset said.

■ Yeatravels to Yarra Glen this weekend for a Sunday match in Division 2 of the AFL Yarra Ranges league.

Alexandra plays at home at Rebel Park, hosting Powelltown.

Yarra Junction last weekend was the scene of a Rebels victory. Perhaps the same may happen for Thornton-Eildon, when the Boners visit on Saturday.

Casting vote

■ Yea Shire President Cr David Lawson used his casting vote to appoint a Chief Executive Officer on a salary package likely to approach $60,000.

There was a 6-6 vote. The move was planned to have the effect of Shire Engineer Stan Kilserhaving to report to the CEO. Previously the Shire Secretary (Jim Elvey) and Shire Engineer worked alongside.

After the 6-6 vote, Mr Kisler provided a shock to Councillors, revealing that it was a condition of his employment that he reported directly to Council.

Extension time

■ Project managers of the Yea Community Centre asked for an extension of the 26-week contract time.

Paynter Dixon said the extended Easter holiday period was a major factor in the delay.

Kelly writes home

■ Kelly Bacon, Yea’s exchange student in Indiana, USA, wrote home, telling of her time in the Boyne Highlands in Michigan, her first time at skiing.

In the previous week she had been on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean.

Pilot speaks at F’dale

● Ernie Vivian ■ A gathering of friends and family, including his young great nieces and nephews – and dog Bonnie - paid tribute the life of Ernie, at a service held at Yea Cemetery last week.

Ernie made his wishes very clear to his nephew, Peter McLeish, stipulating that this was to be a quick graveside burial service – no church, no priest and no rambling bulldust about his life Ernie was born on July 1, 1940. When he was 15, around 1955, his family moved to Yea. His Dad, Allan, was a plumber and he and his mother, Myrtle, had seven children – his older siblings being Raine and Aileen David and Roma having predeceased him.

Ernie took up a job at the Yea Butter Factory and also joined the Yea Rowing Club.

This incorporated long trips to Mildura, Yarrawonga, Bendigo and Nagambie to compete. Ernie also worked on the Country Roads Board before taking up his last jobs at the Murrundindi Sawmills.

Ernie lived at Murrindindi until the year 2000 when he purchased a home in Yea. Before moving in he had made numerous improvements to this house, the most important one being the erection of a new boundary fence for his Collie dogs.

Just to name a few, there was Kym, Scottie, Jess, Tammy, Bev and Scobie. His current dog, Bonnie, was adored by Ernie. Peter has had the care of Bonnie over the past 14 months since Ernie went into care at Rosebank.

Ernie’s other passion in life was going to the Yea Picnic Races with friends, Frank, Pharlap and Joe, catching up with others to have a few beers.

Ernie travelled in a ’74 Kingswood with workmate Jacki Dowling.

It became a routine for Ernie to go to his nehew Peter’s place every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, where they would enjoy a few beers. In return, Peter would visit Ernie during the week for a couple of beers. Ernie absolutely thrived on this.

Peter, on Ernie’s behalf, thanked a number of people: ■ Ernie’s sister, Lorraine, for doing Ernie’s shopping and other chores for him.

■ Ernie’s good mate, Frank. It was no trouble to Frank to take Ernie to Melbourne or Bendigo for specialist appointments.

■ The doctors and nurses at Eastern Health; the “absolutely great bunch of people” here at Rosebank Nursing Home, for their wonderfully compassion and caring of Uncle Ernest, making it as much as possible like home for him.

Ann McCormack, conducting the service, said that she was sure that Ernie would want her to say thank you to Peter and Meagan for all they done for Ernie.

“Particularly since his admission to Rosebank, you gave him something to always look forward to, considerably brightening his days. Moreover he trusted you in more ways than one. He knew you were True Blue and always had his interests at heart.”

■ Ex RAAF pilot Flt.Lt. Eric Peck delivered the address at the Flowerdale ANZAC Day service.

A veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts, his address was based around the theme of ‘Bringing Them Home’.

He told the story of two little known Victoria Cross recipients, Lieutenant Edgar Towner and Corporal Cameron Baird.

Lt. Townerwas an original ANZAC, Cpl. Baird deployed seven times to the Middle East, a modern ANZAC. Their acts of valour were 95 years apart, but almost identical, where in both cases they charged enemy gun placements, placing themselves under heavy fire, to allow their comrades to get to safety and saving their lives.

He noted that after 16 years of involvement in the Middle East conflict there is a new generation of veterans, men and women, who have served and sacrificed.

Yea Bowls Club dates to 1898 ■ The first reference to the Yea Bowls Club that we can locate in newspaper files is in 1898.

“A meeting of the Yea Bowling Club will be held on Saturday evening, and of the Yea Athletic Club on Tuesday evening. Full attendances at both are desired,” noted The Yea Chronicle on November 10, 1898.

That same issue noted that the Yea Shire Council received a letter from the Yea Bowling Club “applying to the council for a piece of land 150 x 100 feet opposite the Post Office, facing High and Station Streets for a site for a bowling green, and requesting council to fence in same, cost of which would amount to £18”.

“Cr. Ryan said he considered this was a matter worthy of support. To his own knowledge bowling greens in other towns had received the support of the;local bodies and quoted as an instance how the Seymour Council had fenced in piece of a road for a similar purpose.

“The public of Yea had subscribed £50, and the club was prepared to spend £70 or £80 in improving the ground.

“Cr. Dunn asked if the public would be blocked from the ground.

“Cr. Ryan said there would be no charge for admisalon, and in fact the public could see much from the outside. .

“Cr Scale said it would be necessary to apply to the Public Works Department as the laud asked for was a portion of the road.

“Cr.Ryan moved that the secretary be instructed to apply to the Lands Department for the piece of land in question and that the council donate £18 towards erecting a fence round same; “Cr. Olney seconded the motion which was carried.

“At a later stage in the council meeting Cr. Ryan brought forward a resolution that the sum of £18 donated by the council towards erecting the fence should come out of the 'general revenue'of the shire.

“He considered that all the ridings should contribute for this purpose.

“Cr. Olney seconded the resolution.

“The motion on being put was carried, Crs Dunn, Draper O'Callaghan voting against.”

Within three months, the land had been secured, according to a February 9, 1899, report.

The draft Annual Budget relates to the financial year commencing 1 July 2017 and ending 30 June 2018.

SENIORS Powelltown 21.16-142 defeated Yea 13.9-87 Yea suffered a disappointing 55-point loss to Powelltown, fading away late in the contest after a spirited first three quarters.

The Demons completely took over the match in the final term, slamming on eight goals to one to quickly put a stop to any resistance from the visitors, who looked like they might have been ready to mount a charge.

Powelltown were always a goal or two ahead but prior the last quarter blitz, the game was tight and the Tigers were very much in the contest, showing much improved intensity after a poor showing against Belgrave.

A four goal to three second stanza blitz was arguably the most impressive period for the day, highlighted by dominance out of the midfield, high pressure and a refusal to let the ball easily out of the forward line.

Shaun Pearce was excellent at both ends of the ground, presenting well at half forward early on before shifting to defence in the second half.

Andrew Chisholm took several strong contested marks in the back half and Zac Pell won the ruck battle, while Aidan McSpeerin (two goals) worked hard all day.

Xavier O'Dwyer found plenty of the football all across the ground and was also great in the air, Brendan Bullen competed admirably against Demons star Mitch McLaughlin and Eddie Neilson was dependable as usual.

After a promising start, it was a shame Yea fell away so drastically but it will prove a valuable lesson for the young side, who have now experienced two weeks in a row the importance of competing for the entire match.

A number of players should be available for selection this week, including Lachie Beattie, James Ryan, Rhys Ali and Dan Freeman.

The Tigers will meet Yarra Glen in the Pride Cup this Sunday.

■ The AFL Yarra Ranges League Round 3 of the 2017 season saw the Alexandra Football/ Netball Club travel to Yarra Junction for two games of football and four games of netball.

A mild autumn day following some morning drizzle and the football ground was as always in great condition with little or no wind. Alexandra senior football had won their last two games at the venue and would attempt to retrieve the George Steiner Cup. RESERVES The Reserves again had a strong side on paper with around six regular senior players listed but unlike round one, played very well to have a 91 point win. Alex began to the clubrooms end and with Brent McDonald and Ryley Norris prominent early led on the scoreboard. The second quarter was even better with Chris McKay and Shane Hill amongst the goals and Alex led by nine goals at half time. Alex looked a bit complacent in the third quarter and had trouble finding the goals as Jack Elkington playing his first game in Alex colors since 2014 was in fine form in defense as was Conor Heaslip.

With Jake Coulson winning in the ruck Alex finished with a six goal last term to win 17.16.118 to 4.3.27. Best players included Jake Coulson, Jack Elkington, Zach Heaslip, Jonathon Noy, Conor Heaslip, Chris McKay (4 goals) and Shane Hill (4 goals). The Tigers had plenty of opportunities to score but failed to capitalise and couldn't manage a major in the first quarter, while the Demons booted the opening two goals to take a 13 point lead at the first break.

Yea booted four goals in the next two quarters but the home side did enough to keep a solid buffer before closing out the game with a two goal-to-one final term.

Brad Clements starred in his return game at the club, splitting his time between half back and the midfield, Tyrone Lang (one goal) was ferocious with his attack on the football and Dean Clue battled hard.

Andrew Butterworth tried all day and Don Ali (one goal) was a four quarter performer, while Ryan Akers and Darcy Pell both hit the scoreboard with a major apiece.

The reserves have struggled in the last two weeks for players but should have several players return in the next fortnight.

juggling mark but the kick did not match the mark as Yarra Junction then snapped a second goal. After further behinds, Scott Hill found the space between the big posts and Alex again moved the ball the length of the ground after a kick-in and Luke Heard made the Junction defense pay for a mistake.

The Eagles responded with their third goal but Alex led by 5 points at the first change. The ever alert Norris anticipated a hurried kick out of the Junction defense and kicked the first goal of the second quarter before Ryan Carter earned a free the hard way and his kick was marked by Rouget near the goal post but Jasper hasn't quite mastered those banana kicks as yet.

Heard tapped the ball cleverly to Norris and his snap was on target. The Eagles got the next goal to keep in touch but Will Goonan marked strongly to turn the next attack before the home side with successive goals leveled the scores.

Stephen Steiner bullocked his way out of the centre and Norris's behind gave Alex back the lead.

Nathan Dundas kicked long forward and Rouget outmarked two opponents and from virtually straight in front was much more comfortable. Jordan Purcell and Matt Steiner were involved in getting the ball to Norris and his long kick never looked like missing, giving Alex a 14 point lead at the main break.

Play early in the third quarter rebounded between the forward arcs with Scott Heveren marking when able and spoiling when not, showing the way in defense. Norris kicked his 5th goal and Callum Tranter and Ben Cooper who looks back to his best form combined for a goal to the latter.

Alex seemed to be getting on top but the Eagles added a seventh goal, Dundas who had come into the game goaled after receiving from Stephen Steiner before Junction added the last two goals to still have a chance at the last change, trailing by 14 points. Rouget made the most of a blatant free with his second goal but the home side again replied through Wheeler (No.16) who had led and marked well all game.

Tranter, who always seems to add to his goal tally each game converted from a free to maintain the margin.

Norris who was in fine form kicked the last two goals to bring his game tally to 7, the last from a Bradley type free (only the old timers will understand the reference) and give the team a 22 point win 14.17 - 101 to 12.7 - 79. In the Junction social rooms after the game, Scott Rowan accepted the George Steiner Cup which had been in Junction's hands for a number of years, with Brayden Norris also receiving the George Steiner medallion for Alexandra's best player on the day as awarded by the Junction coaching group. The Rebels' Dream Team Auction will be held this Saturday in the social rooms and again everyone is welcome, entry is free.

Last year the owner of the winning team won over $5000 so there is a great chance to invest wisely.

YEA JUNIOR FOOTBALL NETBALL REPORTS UNDER 16 FOOTBALL Sundays game was against the strong St.Marys line-up but the young Tigers were ready for a challenge.The start was all St.Marys with two quick goals but Yea finally steadied to have just as many forward entries but could only manage one major for the quarter.

The second opened much the same but Yea's wayward kicking would prove costly .The Tiger back men were under great pressure,and led byJohnny Turvey, Jordy Harry ,Nick Gilbee and Nathan Beattie the Tigers were still in with a sniff at half time.

The third quarter saw the Tigers battle hard and keep matching it with the Saints, but their better conversion rate and the Tigers a man down for the rest of the game meant StMarys would finish on top of Yea boys.

Let's bounce back this week with a win before the bye.All players chipped in at various stages,but consistent players were Johnny Turvey ,Nathan Beattie,Jye Aldous ,Jordy Harry and Ben Wilsmore.

UNDER 14 DIVISON 1 NETBALL 1st Q. It was a tough start to the game, the girls were very competitive with St Marys scoring the 1st goal. Great defensive work by Cassie as GK, Maggie (C) moved around mid-court making plenty of space. St Marys 6 to Yea 2 2ndQ. Second qtr saw no changes to the players or positions. Abby (GA) scored in the first minute but St Marys responded quickly. Some little mistakes by Yea created easy goals for St Marys. Jordyn (WA) continued to work hard with Holly (WD) in md court. Ruby (GD) and Cassie (GK) had their work cut out. Abby and Melody (GS) shot a few quick goals which improved out score.

Q1 It was a beautiful sunny morning in Seymour, good competitive start by the Tigers.

Zoee (GD) and Haylee GK worked well in defence but St Mary's goalers were a bit stronger, who got first few goals of the game. Maddie (GA) and Bridie H (GS) worked well together in goals and Matilda (C ) brought the ball down the court beautifully.

St Marys 5 Yea 0 Q2 A few changes this quarter with Tilly (GD) and Bridie H (GK )into defence, Zoee to centre doing well. Bella (WA), Bonnie (WD) and Sienna (GS) entered the game this quarter, playing well on debut. Good effort by Yea but St Mary's just a little taller.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALL After a good win last week the tigers headed to Seymour to play St Mary’s who’ve had the wood on us in recent times. This was going to be a great test to see how much we’ve improved.

Arienne Holdsworth-Rose took a solid mark at half forward to setup our first from Luke Kelderman giving us the edge before it became evident that this game was going to be a tough midfield battle.

The second quarter started with a quick goal from St Mary’s before the arm wrestle continued in the middle with Yea matching the early goal with a late one.

Yea pressed forward harder late in the third with Perry Moon locking it in the forward 50 on several occasions giving the defence a rest before the fourth quarter onslaught from St Mary’s with the backline digging deep and holding them off for a tough all round performance that shows what a TEAM can do.

Yea 3.2.20 defeated St Mary 1.1.7 Goal kickers: Luke Kelderman 1, Riley Slevin 1, Jackson Grech 1 Memorable Moment Seeing what a team can achieve when every player digs deep for each other and beating a foe on their home turf.
