Footballer’s death: murder charge dropped ■ Andrew William Lee, 33, originally charged with the murder of teenage footballer Patrick Cronin, is to now face a single count of mansluaghter. Patrick died after a brawl at The Windy Mile bar at Diamond Creek in April last year. On Monday (May 15), prosecutors de-

cided to drop the murder charge. Cronin, 19, was allegedly punched from behind whilst assisting a mate. The Lower Plemty footballer was later taken to hospital and two days later the decision was made by his family to turn off his life support system.

Yea man Jack Christie dies, 100 ● From Page One

■ Prominent Yea citizen Jack Christie died on Saturday (May 13) in Deniliquin, aged 100 and eight months. Robert John Arthur Christie is remembered for his farming pursuits, his active life with bowls, and his business interests with Yea Auto Care. He was born in Brunswick on September 14, 1916, to Thomas Alexander and Daisy Maude Christie. He celebrated his 100th birthday on September 14 last year at the property of his daughter and son-in-law, 'Windemere', Booroorban, New South Wales, in between Deniliquin and Hay. Jack was 12 when his father purchased a farm in Yea: a 198-acre settlement on the Goulburn River flats. They milked cows, grew vegetables, and raised poultry. Jack participated in local sport, winning a best and fairest award in 1934. In 1937, he married Verna Aldous, after they met at a Yarck Hall dance in 1935. They had three sons: Gary, Alan and Peter, and daughter Vicki. The farm was sold to Jack’s uncle, Arthur, in 1954, and the family moved to ‘Inverugie’. Jack and Verna enjoyed bowls; he was a singles champion, and the couple took out a pairs championship. Jack served as President of the Yea Bowls Club. The family took on the Yea Auto Care business, which included a small Holden dealership, and local school bus runs. Jack and Verna were married for 65 years; Verna passed away in 2002. They had 12 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

■ Foundation pupils at Alexandra Primary School have been involved with a Teddy Bears Picnic as well as a cross country run and learning about senses this month. Their ‘MAPPEN’ work includes studies in history, geography, civics and citizenship, economics and business, science, critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding capability, personal and social capability, and intercultural capability. ■ It was school as normal at Alexandra Primary School when the township had a planned electricity outage on Tuesday (May 9).

Cross Country

■ The Yea High School House Cross Country Run event is scheduled to be held on Friady (May 19). ■ AYear 7 and 9 ‘Quantum Excursion’ was due to take place yesterday (Tues., May 16) and today (Wed., May 17).

Dixons Creek date

■ The Curriculum Day at Dixons Creek Primary School has been changed to Friday May 26. This new date now coincides with the Year 3-6 Cross Country event. ■ Hayley Bawden is taking long service leave from June 6 until August 28. She will then act as principal for Sharon Walker’s long service leave from August 28 until October 8.

Review underway

■ The Yea High School review, was presented to the School Council late last month by Tony Gooden, Senior Education Improvement Leader. He gave an outline of the process and the work to facilitate the school review to be held early in Term 3. A number of working parties will analyse the school performance over the past three years and review the goals and targets from the school Strategic Plan 2014- 2017. That information and analysis will form the school self-evaluation which will be submitted to the reviewers prior to their school visits early in Term 3. The 2016 Annual Report was also submitted for school council endorsement. The Annual Implementation Plan was also tabled.

■ Cherie Graham has joined Flowerdale Primary School as its new Business Manager. ■ Flowerdale Primary School students are involved in the Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge. From Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

Whittlesea photos

■ Year 10 students at Whittlesea Secondary College are currently working on a unit called Storytelling through Photography. Over the course of the unit students have learned about the structure of a photo sssay, sequencing and editing through Photoshop. Students focused on a variety of themes ranging from the relationship between humans and animals.

Rug Rats at West

■ The Kinglake West Primary School annual Rug Rats program for pre-school children commences this month. The first session will run on Monday (May 22) followed by a session on Friday. May 26). Rug Rats involves a session of PMP (kiddy gym) and a storytime session.

● Nigel Scullion ■ Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion was due to attend an Indigenous Fire and Land Management Workshop at Toolangi on Monday (May 15). A group of 50 was scheduled to meet at the Five Ways Track, Pauls Range State Forest, on Old Toolangi Dixons Creek Rd, Toolangi. Representatives of the Federation of Traditional Owner Groups as well as aboriginal elders, men and women will be attending in support of the project representing a number of groups including: ■ Wurundjeri (Traditional Owners) ■ Gunaikurnai ■ Taungurung ■ Wadawarrung ■ Yota Yota ■ Dja Dja Wurrung Proceedings were to include a welcome to country, smoking ceremony, and firestick presentation. Traditional owner group say it is time to restrengthen and adapt Australia’s traditional fire culture to ensure a safe future for our country. “Traditional fire practice is the answer to preparing our land and our communities for climate change. “There is a natural balance maintained by fire. “When traditional fire is applied properly, native plants return and flourish while weeds and pests are naturally decreased. “The ecosystem becomes balanced, beautiful, and most importantly – a safe place to live. “Indigenous fire knowledge faces the threat of being lost from limited opportunity for communities to practice these methods,” the traditional owners say.

Biggest morning tea at Yea RSL hall ■ The Rotary Club of Yea is inviting all to come and have a ‘Cuppa for Cancer’ when it hosts the Cancer Council of Victoria's Biggest Morning Tea in the Yea RSL Hall on Thursday, May 25. Morning tea will be served between 10am and 12 noon and assist in raising money for cancer research, education and support. All donations given at this Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser will be matched by the Rotary Club of Yea so a healthy cheque can be forwarded to the Cancer Council of Victoria. The Rotary Club of Yea's community event has been raised to VIP status by the Cancer Council in recognition of the significant funds raised over the past 10 years. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the incorporation of

the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria and the 24th Anniversary of the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ fundraising campaign. The national annual event has raised more than $35 million over the past 23 years. Target for this year's Biggest Morning Tea is $3.5 million. Car park concerns

■ Yea Primary School is raising concerns with parents about safety in the car park at the Yea Railway Station. “Please be very careful when you and your children are moving from your car to school through the railway car park,” Prinmcipal Deb George told parents. “There are a lot of vehicles accessing our parking area and it is important that everyone takes care. Some parents have discussed with me their concerns regarding the car park as they have come close to hitting students or parents this week. “The staff car park is not to be used as a short cut for families to enter the school,” Ms George said.

Art at Kinglake

Passing of Judy Evans ■ The remaining member of the Glenburn Band, Judy Evans (nee Hodson), has passed away at Rosebank Hostel, Yea. Judy, widow of David Evans, was mother of Maxine, Adrian and Karen; mother-in-law of Ross, Catherine and Stewart; grandmother of Gabrielle, William, Daniel, Patrick, Cameron, Ella, Jack and Tess. A service was due to be held yesterday (Tues.) afternoon at St Luke’s Anglican Chruch, Yea. The Evans family have a long history of involvement with Yea districy community activities including the Glenburn Band (drummer Doug Lawson died several weeks ago), and the Yea Football Netball Club.

This photo, published in Punch newspaper, was found by Alan Thorley, who curates the Yea and District Historical Society page on Facebook. Michael Jameson, of Oliver St, was employed as a draper at E.S. Purcell & Co.for nearly 60 years.

● Cr David Lawson was Shire President in Yea in 1987 ■ A memo circulated to all Yea Council indoor staff above the name of Yea Shire President Cr David Lawson was not genuine, it was claimed. Cr Lawson said that the memo - which stated that debate over a new $60,000-a-year Chief Executive Officer should not held in front of the public or press - had been issued “in error”. Cr Lawson said he was “amazed” that the memo had been issued without his authority.

■ Yea Rotary’s excahnge student Gina Callanader wrote home from India, telling how she had made a 7½-hour train journey to Vijayawada for a Rotary assembly. Preparations for Easter had not gone to plan: “so on Sunday I had a hot cross bun, a boiled egg and a cry”. Gina was preparing for a pilgrimage to Kassi, 27 hours by train.

Favourite things

■ A chat with Pat Carter at Yea’s iconic Carter’s Milk Bar/ Store, and Sunday morning worship at St Luke’s Anglican Church in Yea, were favourite activities for Isobell Tunzi when she visited Yea in the 1980s and 90s. Isobell’s obituary appears on Page 8 this week. She was mother of Fleur Long of The Local Paper, my mum-in-law, and ‘Nanabelle’ of our children Kristi and James. Isobell and Pat Carter shared a friendship with the late Lill Thompson, of Humevale, whose family had a transport contracting business in earlier years. Thanks to many district people who have sentcondolences.

VFF members said the CEO move came at a time when its members were looking for Council to simplify its administration and return to basic services.

■ Roger Hatty, senior Yea Council worker, called on Shire President Cr David Lawson to apologise for wrongly accusing him of giving a Council memo to the press. Cr Lawson said he had “put two and two together” prior to making the accusation.

Top job for Lording ■ Cr Eric Lording of Murrindindi Shire is one of the four new members of the Board of the Goulburn Valley Waste and Resource Recovery Group. State Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D'Ambrosio, announced this month that Cr Lording, Seema Abdullah, Leigh Wilson and David Lowe would join four continuing members on the Board. The GVWRRGis a statutory authority which the link between local government and the state government portfolio partners including Department of Environment Land and Water, Sustainability Victoria. The GVWRRG is responsible for undertaking waste and resource recovery infrastructure planning across the Campaspe, Shepparton, Strathbogie, Moira, Murrindindi and Mitchell local government areas.

Kinglake garden to be open ■ Judy Henry is welcoming visitors this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, May 20-21) to her Oakhouse Garden, 1434 Whittlesea-Yea Rd, Kinglake West. The event is part of part of the Open Gardens Victoria scheme. Also open will be another local garden: Ivy Lea, 1 Wild Duck Way, Whittlesea. Admission prices are $8 for adults, children under 18 are admitted free. Judy said: “Our original motive for starting the garden was to reduce the mowing. “Having only a push mower we thought it would be a great idea to make garden beds and cut out the grass areas. “We were breeding dairy goats and also exhibition poultry as well as raising two boys and working full-time. “Little did we realise the journey we had started as our interest in gardening and plants grew and we started looking further afield than the local nursery for interesting and unusual specimens.

“Quite often we would arrive home with two grumpy boys and a bootload of rare plants after a day out . “Our garden design has developed as our ideas change and we gained more experience with our climate and the plants themselves. “We often have the plant and then have to find or make an area to suit it. “Our interest in rare plants started a parttime venture into the nursery business for a short while so the gardens were extended as display areas. Many of the plants around the garden have been propagated by us, including the grafted weepers. “As we have always grown our own vegetables we built the igloo as a way to extend our vegetable growing season. This is a working garden that supplies us with most of our summer vegetable needs, and also green pick for the chooks. The igloo amazingly did not melt during the fires, but has small burn holes all along the top and will need to be replaced soon.”

‘Eyewatch’ launch to fight local crime ■ Whittlesea Police last week launched a new social media tool to help link community members with local Police. The Whittlesea Eyewatch page on Facebook encourages the community to become involved. Eyewatch is a platform that allows Police to share updates about crime and other community safety initiatives. This is the 28th Eyewatch page created in Victoria.

More than 1000 people have already engaged with the page.

Insp. Paul Tysoe said: “The Whittlesea Eyewatch page will help Police harness one of the strongest tools in our arsenal our wonderful local community. “Through this Facebook page, we’ll be looking for help identifying criminals, locating missing persons, or seeking information on unsolved crimes.’ “We want this to be a twoway street.” Crime should be reported by phoning 000.

Fruit fly fight ■ The State Labor Government is providing a $375,000 grant to fight Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) in the Goulburn Valley The release of the grant is in addition to the $559,000 previously allocated to fund an extensive trapping program in the Goulburn Murray Valley and the appointment of a Regional Fruit Fly Coordinator. The $6.7 million Managing Fruit Fly – Regional Grants Program will see a co-ordinated and collaborative approach to fruit fly management across the Goulburn Valley, Yarra Valley and the Greater Sunraysia region.

Building begins

■ Construction is under way on St Mary’s College’s new state-of-the-art administration building. The first sod of soil was turned as builders started to peg out the area to begin the build. Staff costs up 5.5% ■ Wage costs at Murrindindi Shire are expected to increase by 5.5 per cent in the 2017-18 budget, despite the Victorian Wage Price Index predicted to rise by 2.5 per cent. Employee operating costs are expected to rise from $13,354,000 in the 2016-17 year, to $14,147. Employee costs - capital fall from 133,000 to 91,000. Total staff expenditure rises from $13,487,000 to $14,238,000. Staff numbers at Murrindinid are budgeted to rise from 148.0 (full-time equivalent) to 150.6. ■ Murrindindi Shire Council is planning to run at a $500,000 deficit for the approaching 2017-18 financial year, according to Draft Budget documents. The Council believes that its deficit for the current 2016-17 year will be $1.1 million.

Less for roads ■ Murrindindi Council’s income on ‘Roads To Recovery’will fall by $91,000 in the 2017-18 financial year, it predicts. The planned revenue from the Federal Government is expected to drop from $1,689,000 to $1,598,000, according to the Draft Budget. Non-recurrent State Government income for buildings, footpaths and roads is expected to fall from $868,000 to $143,000 in the coming 12 months.

The Council is also planning to spend $105,000 on computers and technology in the 2017-18 year. Expenditure on library books in the coming financial year is planned to total $99,000. Infrastructure spending is estimated at $2.696 million comprising: gravel road - resheeting ($875,000), gravel roads - minor maintenance ($425,000), shoulder resheeting ($75,000), sealed roads - renewal and major patching ($90,000), sealed roads - reseals ($670,000), gravel roads sealing ($240,000), bus shelter construction ($20,000), road safety - traffic control measures ($20,000), road safety measures ($50,000), kerb and channel - renewal ($88,000), Pendlebury St kerbing ($53,000), and Snodgrass St - Stage 2 ($90,000).

■ The people of Queenstown celebrated the Coronation with a picnic sports meeting at St. Andrew's hall, on Wednesday, May 12. About a hundred children, including the Try Boys from North Queenstown, and a number of visiting children, were entertained at luncheon by an enthusiastic ladies' committee, organised by Mrs Vogt. In a short address, Mr W. Spicer explained to the children the signlficance of the Coronation, and urged them to strive always to preserve those bonds by which free people throughout the Empire were united under the Crown. The National Anthem was sung and cheers were given for the King and Queen.

■ A total of $465,000 will be spent on waste management in Murrindindi Shire in 2017-18. Landfill cell construction is costed $75,000, with a similar amount provided for design. Capping will cost $85,000, and the Draft Budget says that Anicillary Works, including the installation of bores will total $55,000. Upgrades to ‘Resource Recovery Centre’ are costed at $175,000.

■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish last week asked in State Parliament if there are plans to extend the Goulburn Valley Hwy wire rope project. “My question is to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety. I refer to the installation of centre wire rope barriers on the Goulburn Valley Highwaybetween Yea and Molesworth. “I ask the minister: is it intended to extend the installation of barriers on the Goulburn Valley Highway beyond Molesworth to Cathkin or Yarck? “I ask this as I have been approached by a number of constituents in the area who have heard that this is going to be the case: one, that they will be extended to Cathkin and another, that they will be extended to Yarck. “The communities of Yea, Alexandra, Molesworth and beyond will certainly be very interested in the response to this question, and I look forward to hearing it,” Ms McLeish said.

Schools ‘distress’

■ Yan Yean MLADanielle Green says there is consternation and distress about school attendance boundaries in the north of the City of Whittlesea. “ I wish to raise a matter for the attention of the Minister for Education,” Ms Green said in the Legislative Assembly last week. “The action I seek is that he review the proposed school attendance boundaries in Mernda and Doreen which are causing some consternation and distress for families in Mernda and Doreen. “I want to thank Narelle Hargreaves, who has written to me on behalf of families in Mernda and Doreen. “They suggest that the line-of-sight boundaries that have been proposed by the department will disadvantage some people in those communities. “I know that the minister has been a frequent visitor to the area, and I have no doubt that he will get involved in this matter. “I think it is important that we support the great schools in the area including Hazel Glen College, and Mernda Central P–12 College and Mernda Park Primary School, which both opened this year. “Laurimar Primary School is also a fantastic school, as well as that great local country school, Doreen Primary School, which is limited in the number of students that can attend because it is not on reticulated sewerage; it is limited to 150 students. “I also want to protect the needs of other great schools such as Diamond Valley College and Whittlesea Secondary College. I want to support the families in Doreen and Mernda, and I have every confidence that the minister will act to review these proposed boundaries,” Ms Green said.

■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish has spoken in State Parliament about Alexandra’s mural. “In National Volunteer Week, I am pleased to inform the house about some wonderful volunteer initiatives in the Eildon district. On ANZAC Day I took delight in attending the unveiling of the More than a Mural project at the Alexandra RSL,” Ms McLeish said. “Initiated by the late Rex Tate, the project features a number of painted murals depicting images from the wars Australia has been involved in. “With the key objective of reducing graffiti, the project also had other benefits. It facilitated links between members of the local RSL and younger school students. In addition, it offered students an opportunity to participate in a community-based project. “There are many people to be acknowledged, including Anna Baker, More Murals founding member and project coordinator; HenryAndrews from the RSL; Murrindindi Shire project chair Stuart Coller; Alexandra Secondary College principal Nigel Lyttle; Alexandra Secondary College students and the student leaders who attended on the day — Jelena Miladinovic, Jorja Geslerand Hugo Walcott. ● Jacqui Rabel ■ Murrindindi Council has issued a media statement praising its own financial performance. “The third quarter report on year four of the Murrindindi Shire Council Plan 20132017 sees Council in a good position to meet its performance targets,” states the media release issued by Communications Manager Jacqui Rabel. “Six per cent of activities for the year are complete and 83 per cent of planned activities are progressing on schedule. “A further 6 per cent of activities are experiencing delays and 5 per cent of activities have been withdrawn or were not yet due to commence.” Murrindindi Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Margaret Abbey is quoted to say that there was a range of highlights to focus on in the quarter under review. "A major focus was certainly the Shirewide community engagement project, 'Have Your Say' to inform the creation of the next Council Plan which has involved Councillors and staff alike,” the press release quotes Ms Abbey to say. “Council was also engaged in a range of other activities, including support to the Alexandra 150th anniversary celebration, the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in Kinglake and an Age Friendly Communities Project. “We also launched our new corporate Facebook page to facilitate better communications between Council and the community", said MsAbbey. "Council continued to advocate for faster rollout of NBN infrastructure, including while hosting a visit by Federal Member for Indi, Ms Cathy McGowan. “Council was also pleased to announce the completion of two major capital works building projects this quarter, with the Cricket Pavilion's refurbishment including new public toilets and shower facilities at Leckie Park and the new Leachate pond at the landfill site in Alexandra. "On the environmental front Council has made submissions to the State Government on its review of the native vegetation clearing regulations and also its review of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. “It also participated in a steering committee for a new Fox Control group in the Strath Creek Landcare area and liaised with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to have Green Army workers improve the environment of UT Creek. "Even though a new Council Plan will shortly be in place to govern our activities for the next four years, there is still plenty for us to do and achieve in the remaining months of the financial year.” Ms Abbey said.

● Players assemble at the Yea Golf Club for the President’s Cup ■ Yea hosted the Dalhousie Vets President’s Cup on Thursday. Their were 80 golfers participating in the three-person Ambrose event. Despite the early fog conditions were good with many compliments from visitors on the course condition. Winners from Seymour were Phil Jarvis and friends with a nett 57 (63 off the stick). Runners-Up with a nett 59 2/3 (69 stick) were Yea members of Bruce Kindred, Russell Wealands and Alan Pell. The Club received close to $1400 from the day through golf fees, bar and raffle, before expenses.

W’sea footpaths

■ More than two kilometres of ‘missing’ footpaths are currently under construction as part of the City of Whittlesea’s program to improve connectivity throughout the municipality. The footpaths have been upgraded as part of theMissing Links Program which will see more than $450,000 worth of pavement constructed in four areas. As new residential and commercial developments are constructed, footpaths are developed. This often results in a number of missing pedestrian links between the different residential zones and commercial precincts. The first of the missing links to be completed was the 500 metre stretch along Harvest Home Rd from the Epping RSL to Epping Rd in Epping North.

McEwen misses ■ "Families across our community are the biggest losers from this (Federal) Budget, which supports big business and high income earners at the expense of families," according to McEwen's Labor MHR Rob Mitchell. “Where is the funding for infrastructure in the outer north and the towns north of Melbourne?” Mr Mitchell asked.

■ The AFL Yarra Ranges League and the Seymour District Junior Football Netball League both had the bye last weekend for Interleague. Alexandra was represented in several of the teams. On Saturday, Alexandra's A- Grade playing coach Latoya Wards was selected in the senior netball team for the AFLYarra Ranges game that lost to Gippsland Football Netball League. Former Rebels junior and senior football player Tyson Biffin represented Gippsland in the senior football team that lost to the Yarra Ranges. Meanwhile at Wangaratta on Sunday, the SDJFNL Under 14 and Under 16 football teams competed in a lightning premiership format with each side playing three games of two halves, each 15 minutes in duration. Alexandra's Ryan Lucas was selected in the Under 14 team whilst Tom Rouget and Angus Smith were selected in the Under 16 team which finished third in their competition. The day was played in good spirit and the experience of playing in a competition with some of the best players from the north-east was great for all involved. After two years of junior netball Interleague the League was unable to find a competition to enter for last weekend and is investigating other options for the future. Yea-Kinglake RSL President Jeffrey Swain congratulated the winners and thanked all the teams for their participation, good sportsmanship and generous support of the local RSL. "I'm bowled over,” said Jeff when presented with a donation of $500 raised on the day. "This puts us close to the jack." Thanking Phil Cooper, Yea Bowls Club President, and the competitors, Jeff spoke briefly of the needs of local veterans and the welfare and pension work of the Yea-Kinglake RSL. "This generous donation is very much appreciated," he said. "Support like this, while it assists veterans directly, ultimately benefits our whole community," Jeff said.
