YEA HOSPITAL TO MERGE WITH SEYMOUR HEALTH Rich history of local care

Yea would be junior partner ■ There is a certain inevitability about the proposal to merge Yea and District Memorial Hospital with Seymour Health. Economics of running country hospitals mean that back-office savings are essential to balance tight balances. Yea and District Memorial Hospital’s Board engaged a consultant last year, who identified five options for the organisation’s future. Modest losses have been incurred annually for some years, mainly through depreciation write-downs, gradually eating away at the Yea Hospital reserves. Hundreds of thousands of dollars could be saved annually by leaving Goulburn Valley Health, which provides ‘corporate services’ to Yea, and by merging management with Seymour Health, the Board believes. ‘Selling’ the merger proposal to Yea locals will probably be the most difficult part of the proposal. The Board is reassuring that the Yea and District Memorial Hospital will not change its name. Sweeteners are being added that a merger might result in Yea obtaining a foot clinic and a dental chair. The Board’s media statement hints at enhanced Well Women’s Clinics, podiatry services and palliative care. Assurances are being offered that a ‘Charter of Merge’ would demand that Yea have equal representation on a combined Seymour-Yea health organisation. There are no guarantees that that Yea representation would last beyond a few years. Yea Hospital has a turnover of approximately $5.5 million. Seymour Health has a turnover of approximately $18.5 million. The Yea component would represent a quarter of the combined $24 million turnover. The Local Paper understands that the merger proposal already has the tacit nod of the Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy and her department. ‘Due diligence’ is to take place over the next nine weeks, with a final decision to most likely to be made in September. Unless there is an extraordinary public outcry, the merger appears to be a ‘done deal’.

Yea Hospital President Kristin Michaels announed on Thursday (May 18) that the merger of management teams was being explored to establish better and expanded local health services. Senior hospital staff were due to be advised last Thursday (May 18), with other staff to be told on Friday (May 19). The Yea Hospital has 40 staff (full-time equivalent) and they are being reassured that no jobs will be lost in the merger. The Hospital is one of the largest employers in the Yea district. “Under the proposal, both hospitals would fully retain their existing hospital names, services and staffing levels, and patient care will continue as usual,” says a statement from the two organisations. Yea Hospital has previously obtained its ‘corporate services’ from the Shepparton-based GV Health. The Yea Board believes that savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year can be made by merging the Seymour and Yea management teams. ● Press clipping from the Yea newspaper. 1914 ■ Since the first years of the 1900s, Yea has been extremely proud of its local hospital services. Nurse Drysdale conducted the Rossmoor Private Hospital in Raglan St from about 1904. In 1928, the Fernley Private Hospital opened in MarySt, with its name changed to the Yea Bush Nursing Hospital in 1939. After World War II, the Hospital and Charities Commission assumed responsibility for the hospital. It took the name of Yea and District Memorial Hospital in 1948. The columns of Yea’s press regularly contained details of donations in cash and kind, and the work of auxiliaries. It was common for lists of donated foods (particularly eggs) to appear in the local newspaper. A public appeal was commenced in 1948, to fund the construction of a 10-bed hospital building. Building work commenced in 1956, and the new ‘acute’ beds were first occupied in 1958. In 1972, funding for an additional three acute bed wing was provided by the Apex Club of Yea. Rosebank Hostel was first occupied in 1979. Members of the Rotary Club of Yea were particularly active in the fund-raising for the Accident and Emergency area. Similarly, Rotarians played an active role in the intense lobbying of the Labor State Government for the helipad in Station St, Yea, across the road from the hospital grounds. Renovations of the acute section of the hospital were undertaken in 2001-03. At the same time, works were underway at the Rosebank Nursing Home and Hostel. In 2004, the Hospital and Rosebank Extended Care Centre were amalgamated. Recognition was given to the late Grace Bennetts for her contributions to local aged care. In 2004, Yea and District Memorial Hospital assumed responsibiloity for community services in the western side of Murrindindi Shire. Alexandra District Hospital has similar responsibilities on the eastern side of the municipality.

■ Local Paper reader Mark Hoysted writes: “Unfortunately it seems that whenever these mergers occur, the level of services for the local community diminishes. “Once the arguments from the bean-counters override those of the practitioners, you fundamentally change the basis on which health care is being provided to the community. “Health care cannot be measured in strictly monetary terms. That's why it is given to the government to manage. “I think that while people are being distracted with the offer of a foot clinic and dental chair , they should also pay close attention to services which are being transferred to Seymour - or closed completely.”

Rumours of change

■ Speculation about changes at Yea Hospital were first aired on social media by local resident Malcolm Bett on May 5. “Any truth in that Yea Hospital is closing?” Malcolm asked. Leading Yea citizen Neil Beer replied: “I have contacted a Yea Hospital Board member - his words ... certainly news to me!” At the time, The Local Paper contacted Hospital Manager Lorina Gray, whose comment for publication was “We are not closing.”

● From Page 9 Seymour Health Chair Annie Fletcher-Nicholls said: “We welcome the opportunity to partner with Yea and District Memorial Hospital, and look forward to continuing to serve both local communities as a new, united health service.” The media statement, issued above the name of Chris McDonnell, CEO of Seymour Health, says that the due diligence process for the proposed merger is expected yto be finalised in coming months. Ms Michaels was more specific. She nominated a nine-week process, with the end decision due in September. Ms Michaels said the Yea board had been “grappling” about the future of the hospital. There are always challenges with the exteranl funding regime, she said. The Board had responsibilities to look at the capacity of the hospital, and its ability to provide a level of services. The consultant was engaged by the Yea Hospital Board last year to “future proof” the organisation. An “external review” was essential to best identify the options. The issue of the Yea Hospital being the hub of health care in Yea was not in question, she stressed. The final report was received late last year. Discussions with Seymour Health have been in progress over the past six months. The initiative for the merger talks had come from Yea, and the Board had not been “tapped on the shoulder” by State Government authorities, she said. That notwithstanding, Health Department personnel have been aware of the talks between Yea and Seymour, she said. Matters discussed included issues of efficiency, governance, logistics and shared knowledge.

■ Murrindindi Shire Council's Kinglake Resource Recovery Centre has been hit again by thieves, this time stealing a generator worth more than $5500. The generator was stolen sometime between Sunday May 14 and Wednesday May 17, along with a range of goods including copper pipes and a staff member's personal belongings. Murrindindi Shire Council's CEO Margaret Abbey said Police were now involved in the investigation. "This was not the first time unscrupulous people have raided our Resource Recovery Centres," Ms Abbey said. "In fact, this is just one of a number of thefts we've had at our Centres over the past two years". "Both the Kinglake and the Yea Resource Recovery Centres have been the target of a number of break-ins and related damage, with fences cut and shed doors and panels broken. The combined cost to the community would be at least $20,000 over the past few years." Bushfire memorial to be next to public toilets ■ Murrindindi Shire CEO MargaretAbbey has told a ratepayer that the $25,000 Kinglake West bushfire memorial is to be located alongside the local public toilet block. “I can confirm that the Councillors discussed the feedback received on the six bushfire memorials last Wednesday,” Ms Abbey wrote to the ratepayer on May 17. “The Memorials Working Group had discussed the submissions which were received in relation to the final designs for each of the six bushfire memorials,” Ms Abbey said. “In particular, they considered the differing views received from various community members in Kinglake West regarding the location of that memorial. “The Working Group indicated that they believed that, based upon the comments received, that Council should proceed with the memorial at the location shown on the final concept design. “Councillors discussed the various comments received from residents and the views of the Working Group and agreed that we should proceed with the memorial at the location shown on the final concept design,” MsAbbey said.

Cemetery plan to panel ■ Planning proposals are likely to be referred to an independent panel, when Murrindindi Shire Councillors meet in Yea tonight (Wed.). ‘Amendment C59’ is due to be discussed by Councillors at the 6pm meeting. The land is on Blackwood Lane, near the WhittleseaKinglake Rd. An officer’s report is recommending that the Kinglake Ranges Cemetery Trust be advised that members of the community consider that inadequate pre-amendment consultation was undertaken by the Trust. The recommendation suggests that the panel consider the nature of the consultation undertaken by the Trust. The proposal for the cemetery was put forward of behalf of the Department of

695 wanted ■ Pet registrations were due on April 28 but there are still 695 animals that have not been re-registered in Murrindindi Shire 497 dogs and 198 cats. Murrindindi Shire Council's CEO Margaret Abbey said the benefits of registering pets are clear, particularly if something happens and they go missing. "Not only is it a legal requirement to register any dog or cat over the age of three months with Council, if it does go missing or wander off, we can easily contact you and return it free of charge.. "However, if your pet isn't registered, it makes it much more difficult for us to find you, and then not only do you have to collect it, but you may also be fined," Ms Abbey said

■ An application for the Fun Mudder Event at Buxton on October 22 is due to go to the meeting of Murrindindi Shire Council to be held tonight (Wed.) at Yea. N. Bolto is asking for permission to stage the event on farming land at 140 Granite Park Place. An officer has recommended to Councillors that a permit be issued.

■ More than $500,000 hung in the balance as Yea Shire attempted to discover who actually controlled land in Kinglake that ad-joined a controversial private streets scheme. The Shire had sent out estimates to landowners for the scheme, “but now it seems that the Shire itself might have to foot the bill following claims that land is the name of local government”.

■ “It was like the old Waranga days at Nagambie on Saturday, when entertaining football of good standard, some excellent individual performances, and the result in doubt until Yea ‘went mad’ in the last quarter and finally won by 33 points,” wrote Tom Dignam. “Scores were level at the last change. ■ Yea Race Club President PeterProvis said that coolroom equipment had been placed inside the bar area, against club wishes. The Club had wanted to extend the bar area, and asked permission of the Committee of Management. The Club was told that Mr D.O.J. ‘Toby’ McLeish had placed a claim for $200 per week lost wages following an accident at the course in November 1984. “The matter is in the legal process,” we reported in 1987.

$10.3 million haul

Rainbow flag

■ Darebin Council raised the rainbow flag over Preston City Hall in a show of solidarity with the LGBTIQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex Queer) community. Mayor Kim Le Cerf said the flag would remain until marriage equality was law in Australia. “People who identify themselves as LGBTIQ make up more than 10 per cent of our community and are twice as likely to experience poor mental health outcomes as a direct result of the stigma, prejudice and discrimination they experience every day,” she said. - The Leader

■ A significant number of Murrindindi projects will be carried forward from the 2016-17 year, the Council’s Draft Budget reveals. Renewal works at the Alexandra Timber Tramway Museum, woth $30,000, funded by the Council, are set to go into the following financial year. A grant-funded $50,000 sum fo the Marysville Tourism and Arts Centre will be moved into the next financial year. Expenditure of $40,000, funded by Council, on information technology appears in the table of “works carried forward from the 201617 year”. An office software upgrade worth $60,000 is also being transferred into the subsequent financial period.

1 in 4 suffer mental health problems ■ One in four people experiences a mental health issue, according to publicity issued prior to a panel discussion on the subject scheduled to be held on Monday (May 22) night at the Ellimatta Youth Space, Kinglake. “Mental health issues in our communities - particularly for our youth - are complex and challenging; but, by coming together and increasing our understanding and our ability to respond, we can make a difference,” said a statement issued byLaura Caine of the Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood Centre. “One in four people experiences a mental health issue.” The panel asked if people were equipped to support anyone they knew. The subject of improving mental health for people of all ages was canvassed. Ellimatta Youth and Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House organised a panel of professionals to answer questions and discuss steps availableto respond to mental health in our community. Panel members included Suzanne Miller, CEO, Nexus Primary Health who has a professional background is psychology and I have a variety of qualifications in psychology, social science, public health, and management. £250 for Park

■ As the result of the.visit to the Kinglake district a .few weeks ago by the Minister for. Public Wrorks (Mr Goudie) and 'the Speaker (Mr Everard) the government has granted £250 for the construction of a kiosk at Bald Spur (or rather Goudie's Lookout). Empire Day ■ The Mayor and Mayoress of the City of Heidelberg, (Cr. and Mrs. R. Reid) and the Town Clerk (Mr. F. Phillips) were present at the Diamond Creek State School Empire Day ceremony. Cr. J. Ryan introduced the Mayor who spoke of the Empire as being one very large family. Before Queen Victoria, the family was scattered. Since her time, the family spread over the world, has come close together. The head of the Empire is now known and loved by all. Mr Frank Phillips spoke a few words to the children after which Cr. Reid unveiled thie portrait of the King which was presented to the school by the school committee on May 7 when the school celebrated Coronation Day. The little ceremony was most impressive, and the children fully realized the significance of the day they were observing.

Council Snippets $19.8m incoming

■ Murrindindi Shire ratepayers will pay $19,832,890 in rates and charges to the Council in 2017-18, a 3 per cent increase from the current year. Expected revenues in the next financial year are: ■ General rate: $13,672,513; ■ Municipal charge: $3,044,716; ■ Kerbside collection and recycling: $2,889,048; ■ Agreement in lieu of rates (power station): $62,560; ■ Supplementary rates and charges: $164,053. “All supplementary rate and municipal charge revenue forecast to be raised during 2017-18 relates to the new property developments, improvements or subdivisions that are forecast to occur in 2017-18 - and do not impact the average rate increase of 2.0 per cent that is applied for the budgeted financial year, nor is it included in the calculation of Council’s compliance with the rate cap,” says the Draft Budget. “A 1.0 per cent growth target is reflective of the objective of Council to grow the rate base by 1.0 per cent each year.”

Rates prediction

■ Murrindindi Shire Councillors are predicting in their Draft Budget that annual rate increases will have a cap of 2 per cent. “Council is not currently factoring in a request for a rate cap variation during its four year term,” says the Budget document.

Cash reserves

■ Murrindindi Shire’s cash and investments are forecast during 2017-18 by $1.9 million. Councillors say this is in line with Council’s financial strategy to ensure that funds are available for planned future capital requirements and to ensure continued delivery of services to the community. Cash to hand is expected to rise from $22.8 million in 2016-17 to $24.75 million in 201718.

■ Residents wanting a reprint of their misplaced rates notice will have to pay a $5 fee to Murrindindi Shire Council. A ‘Land Information Certificate Receipt’ will cost $25.90. People wanting to display anA-frame sign will now have to pay a fee of $65 for a two-year permit, up by $2.

■ Parliamentarian Cindy McLeish has spoken in the Legislative Assembly about attending a community event at Christmas Hills. “On Saturday, 29 April, I had the opportunity to drop in to the inaugural Christmas Hills writers festival, held in the Mechanics Institute Hall, which I have heard described as the cultural centre of the universe,” Ms McLeish said. “I was impressed on so many levels - with the range and calibre of the speakers, the full house, the morning tea on display and of course the dedicated team of volunteers who put this event on. “I want to acknowledge Glennis Bibra, Veronica Holland, Sandy Jeffs and Liz Mildenhall. “They were supported by a large number of volunteers on the day. ■ ACommunity Healing Arts Project is to take place at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Kinglake next month to assist many people who are still recovering from the losses and grief of Black Saturday. This project is funded by the Kinglake Ranges Foundation, says Parish Priest, Rev. Dr Ruwan Palapathwala. “We are brining counsellors, wine makers, story tellers, and arts therapists to facilitate workshops that would facilitate conversation around grief and loss. “Through these workshops, we want to promote peer-mentoring skills and support networks for our people. “Most of the facilitators are from the community who have endured loss and grief owing to Black Saturday fires,” Dr Palapathwala said.

$102 fee becomes $1240 ■ The planning fee for a tree removal in Murrindindi Shire will rise from $102 to $1240.70 from July 1, according to figures in the Draft Budget. The massive increase is included of a schedule of fees and charges detailed by Councillors for the 2017-18 financial year. Dog fees are expected to rise to $83, from $81.Concession owners will pay $43, instead of $40.50, an increase of 6.1 per cent. Registration fees for dogs and cats are expected to rise to $129, if the animal is not desexed. The concession fee will be $65. Desexed dogs and cats will

attract a fee of $43. There is no charge for registration of guide dogs. Restricted breeds and declared animals will attract a fee of $240. Residents wanting to place a public notice in a paper (to

be inserted by the Council) will pay $170 per notice, plus a $39 Council administration charge. Those making a planning application for a house over $100,000, see their fee increase from $490 to $1212.80. Those with building works from $1 million-$5 million will have a fee of $815 increase to $3213.20. Two-lot subdivision application fees rise from $386 to $1240.70. Cost of an easement application rises from $404 to $1240.70. Planning permit consent fees rise from $102 to $306.70. Shed planning fees rise from $102 to $188.20.

■ Murrindindi Shire residential rate payers will pay 2.2 per cent more in 2017-18, according to the Draft Budget. There are 5508 residential ratepayers, up 1.5 per cent from 5499 in the 2016-17 year. The 429 ommercial and industrial ratepayers will have a 12-month freeze from rates increases. Rural ratepayers, totalling 3060, are expected to pay 2 per cent. The 739 owners of vacant land will face a 0.5 per cent increase.

Recycling charges

■ The recycling charge for Murrindindi Shire ratepayers is expected to rise by 2.3 per cent in 2017-18. Kerbside collection fees will increase by 2 per cent.

KINGLAKE FOOTBALL CLUB REPORT ■ Despite Kinglake being 17 points up at halftime, Powelltown regained the lead late in the final quarter to win by 10 points. Powelltown 15.15 (105) defeated Kinglake 14.11 (95). Powelltown's Dan Rees took the opening shot for goal kicking a behind. This was quickly followed by Matt Lord kicking Powelltown's first goal from 40 metres out and another Powelltown goal leaving Powelltown 5.5 (34) to Kinglake 3.3 (21) at the first break. At the quarter-time break, Kinglake coach Wilkinson said: “Despite opening with pressure we (Kinglake) tailed right off." "We only managed 13 tackles and 15 inside 50s to (Powelltown's) 11 but we are butchering the thing going inside (50m)" Kinglake's Zac White opened the second quarter with a diving, running mark in the forward 50 kicking a goal and quickly followed this up with another goal, with Kinglake winning most centre ruck contests. Zac then kicked the third goal of the quarter to see Kinglake take the lead by three points. This was soon followed by playing coach Brad Wilkinson kicking another goal to see Kinglake up by nine points. Just as the siren sounded Kinglake's Michael Fitzclarence snapped from the boundary to see Kinglake go into the main break with a 17-point lead. Powelltown 7.7 (49) Kinglake 10.6 (66). Powelltown came out determined in the third quarter having the first shot at goal, but missed. Kinglake soon followed with the first goal of the third. Before long Powelltown had found their feet, kicking two quick goals to narrow the margin to just eight points. This quarter would be tight with the lead continually changing. Powelltown's James Rohan and Scott Carter then kicked two quick goals to see Powelltown lead by four points. Just before the siren Kinglake's Zac White goals with Kinglake going into the final quarter with a three-point lead. Powelltown 12.11 (83), Kinglake 13.8 (86). With no bench Kinglake would go into the final quarter undermanned with both teams trying to extend and keep their narrow lead. With 10 minutes left Kinglake were leading by two points until Powelltown kicked for goal and missed, making it a one-point game. Kinglake keep trying to penetrate their forward 50 but Powelltown's defence kept Kinglake from scoring. With a few minutes left, it was Powelltown 97 to Kinglake 95 as Powelltown slowed down ball movement to 'run out the clock. Powelltown had three more shots at goal with one hitting the post and one missing the goals for a point. Then just as the siren sounded the footy was kicked through the Powelltown goals to see the Demons win by 10 points in a close game that either side could have won. Powelltown 15.15 (105) defeated Kinglake 14.11 (95). Kinglake currently sit sixth on the ladder with Powelltown in fifth. This week Kinglake are at home to Alexandra and Powelltown play Seville away.

YEA JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB REPORT UNDER 16

■ Yea Under 16 faced one of the toughest challenges in junior footy taking on the strong Euroa line -up on their home ground. Conditions were perfect but the Tigers were quietly confident of an upset. Euroa did all the attacking early with the Yea backline holding firm. After some scrappy play on the outer wing Firmin found McMaster who had found some space and then kicked to R. Hargreaves for the Tigers first.Yea 1. 1. (7) to Euroa 1.0 (6). The second term was a tough hard affair with both teams having an equal amount of the play but some less than perfect kicking into the forwards allowed Euroa to repel many Yea attacks. Although not scoring themselves Yea held Euroa to one goal for the quarter. Half time: Yea 1.1 (7), Euroa 2 .3 (15). Yea had the majority of the play in the third but just couldn't get the score on the board until Bulbeck snapped truly and was then followed by two quick goals to Beattie, the last just before the siren to leave the scores level at threequarter time: 4.3 (27) each. Yea were matching it with the bigger opposition and when Bulbeck kicked his second an upset was on the cards,but the more experienced Magpies wouldn't go away and kicked three goals in the final minutes to take the game from Yea's grasp. UNDER 12 Euroa 4.2.26 d Yea 3.5.23 The undefeated Tigers rolled out of the fog and into the sunshine at Euroa to face off against their nemesis. Having been rolled by Euroa forever Sunday’s game was the one that the team wanted. Jardine Nai kicked our first as he copped a heavy knock in what was a tight high quality first quarter. Euroa led into the break, with a Yea comeback with a 40m rooster snapped from Riley Slevin. All locked up at half-time, 3.0.18 apiece. A captain’s quarter inspired the team as they pressed forward and edged in front leaving Euroa scoreless but failed to capitalise with only four points. Euroa kicked an early goal in the last taking the lead as the high quality game rose to another level. Neither side giving an inch, end to end, desperate football with time running out when Yea went deep into the pocket at the city end. The crowd was on the edge of their seats with seconds left in the game, then came a flurry out of the pack towards goal as the crowd rose to its feet saw the ball crash into the post, then a sigh later, the siren. Euroa won the thriller by four points. The raw emotion felt by the Tigers showed how much they wanted this one. Hold your heads high Tigers and be proud in what was a cracker of a game. ■ The game started off with Ebony and Hannah C defending together which gave Yea the ability to work the ball down to our offensive area efficiently. Euroa’s defensive strength was strong so this resulted in minimum scoring for Yea. Euroa 15, Yea 1. Great passing by Caitlyn resulted in Jordan W scoring a goal. Great work rate all over the court by Jordyn B was helpful to our shooters. Hannah B's goals assisted the Tigers to gain some goals to the score board. 32 - 5 Good defence by Hannah C and great leads by everyone resulted in a higher scoring quarter for the Tigers. Great pressure from the Tigers took Euroa by surprise. 37 - 11 After some motivation from coach Brad Watts the girls go on with a determined attitude with Ebony in GA and Jordan W in GD. ■ Q1. Yea started the game on a roll, Bridie H shot the first goal. Euroa girls passed well. Yea tried its hardest to get the ball up to the goals. Tilly defended the goals and Zoee, Bella and Finn passed well. Maddy got the last goal of the quarter. Yea 2, Euroa 3 Q2. Euroa went out first from centre and scored the first goal. Yea defended well and put the pressure on Euroa. Yea passed well but Euroa was always there and were able to get the goals. The score didn't reflect how well the girl's played. Yea 2, Euroa 8 Q3 .Yea put the pressure on and defended well but Euroa were getting the goals. Bridie H shot the second goal. Euroa girls seemed to have more height and were able to get more possessions. Between Zoee and Tilly they kept the goals down and defended well in the goals. Finn led out well in the centre. YEA NETBALL REPORT B-GRADE

■ This was the Grand Final rematch from last season, but whilst Yea's line up has slightly altered, the Seville side arrived with a totally new and thrown together outfit. On paper Yea were expected to cruise to victory and that ended up the case in what was perhaps a Yea B-Grade scoring record. No team should ever be judged on previous results, so the Yea girls didn't go in over confident at all. However, their confidence soon grew as they started the game brilliantly and it became evident that their skill level and ability was above their opposition. The defensive end were fantastic, denying Seville opportunities to shoot and on multiple occasions intercepting the ball before it could reach the goal circle. Chels and Rach did a power of work on the Seville centre pass and this gave Rhi the time and confidence to intercept the incoming ball. Yea had things pretty much their own way in attack and shot 25 goals in the first quarter, 25 more than their opponents. Cindy N and Ruby were brilliant in the midcourt and their combination around the circle edge seemed almost effortless as they used the space and timing to perfection. Cindy H and Reggie both moved well in the circle, the latter making strong drives to the post where she was rewarded with the feed from the mids. Both shooters were having a day out and were in a great rhythm on the shot. As is the Tigers sportsmanship and great spirit, they were just as vocal and encouraging of Seville when they scored their first goal, and subsequent goals in the middle two quarters. By three quarter time the Tigers were leading 66-3. Rotations were made in the last quarter, with only two players remaining in their original positions. Rhi made the move to GS and gave her opponent a bath, using the space allowed to her brilliantly. She shot 20 goals for the quarter with great feeds in by Reggie at WA and Chels who was having a run in the centre. Loz Cronk was as reliable as ever, and her move from GK to WD saw her combining well with Rach as they consistently moved the ball into the attacking end. Soph Stares had a stint with the B's this week and played the last in GK, making numerous intercepts and deflections, as well as a ripper rejection. Overall there was little to fault in the Tigers game, as they executed a well drilled and confident four quarter performance. Well done girls. Yea 92 def Seville 3 Goals: R. Bell 36, C. Hayes 36, R. A-GRADE

The A-Grade girls deservedly got back on the winners’ list with a comprehensive victory over fierce rival Seville. In contrast to their B-Grade team, Seville boasted a more competitive side, mainly filled with lower grade players, but still of good ability. The Tigers started well, getting the goals on the board early to set up a handy buffer to work on throughout the match. Meg proved to be a great focal point at GS, using great footwork to find front position under the post. Brooke and Bridget were back together in defence and they proved a dynamic team to restrict Seville to just two goals for the quarter. Sarah and Chel’s work outside the defensive ring was vital, making sure the feed came from off the circle to give the 2 B's more chances at the intercept. Yea took a 16-2 goal lead to the break. Sophie Stares and Sophie Watts entered the game on the wings in the second quarter and provided the team a different look. Soph Watts combined well with her sister

ALEXANDRA FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

Nikki across the attacking transverse line and Soph Stares used her height and long arms to get her hands to many balls. At times the Tigers were a little patchy with their passing and transition which gave Seville more opportunities and they were able to convert a little more in this second quarter but Yea still won the quarter and led 31-12 at half time. Coach Cindy was able to make the most of all nine players and in the third quarter she moved the talented Nikki in to C and the versatile Megan into GA. Both girls slotted well into their positions but kept Meg as their main target early until Megan found her feet back in the goal circle. Once she found her range, Megan shot beautifully for the remainder of the game. Defensively the girls played a tight game right down the court and were rewarded with many favourable turnovers and held ball decisions. Once again the circle defenders were a standout and kept Seville to 4 goals. Yea 46 - 12 at the last break. Yea players didn't take their feet of the peddle in the last quarter and went on to play a great quarter with many impressive passages of play. Chels drove strongly all through the court and defensively she has improved out of sight with strong footwork and closing speed to contest the ball. Meg finished the game strongly at GS to end up with 39 goals. A great win girls which has kick-started what will be a good month of games to come. Well done. Yea 62 def Seville 25 Goals: M. The Under 10s were up against it on the weekend with Euroa fielding a predominately taller side in both matches with skill sets beyond their age however it was fantastic to see great determination and effort from the young Tigers team. ■ The AFL Yarra Ranges League Round 5 of the 2017 season last Saturday saw the Rebels travel to Thornton for two games of football and three games of netball on a near perfect late autumn day, contrary to predictions. The Reserves, with the customary multiple changes proved too good for Thornton Eildon in a disappointingly scrambly game as Alex, with a couple of tall recruits always looked the better side but struggled to put that into effect onto the scoreboard. Doug Smith taking over at full forward from Chris McKay kicked a goal with his first kick in the Alex colours and with his physique will be an acquisition to the team whilst high leaping ruckman Jacob Brereton playing his first game after an early injury will definitely step up into the senior side in the near future. Another new player Tim Fielden also fits nicely into the team and plays with plenty of desire. Another player presenting his name to

SENIORS

The Seniors ran out and the ground matched the day as Alex prepared to defend the Barry Sprague Thompson Cup with Alex forced to make two changes to the team with Scott Hill and Steve Steiner replacing the injured Matt Steiner and Rhys Steward. Alex began to the southern end and went forward from the first bounce and Zach Heaslip had a goal on the scoreboard in less than a minute but the next goal did not come as easy as the game tightened up with the home side equal to the contest. Luke Heard was involved early and he firstly gave Will Goonan an opportunity but he was offline then he received from Brayden Norris for Alexandra's second goal. Thornton Eildon continued to tackle and contest and was rewarded with their first goal after an Alex defensive error. Ben Cooper as courageous as ever kept pushing forward and Brayden Norris was strangely wayward as the teams went to the first break level with 2.2 each. The home side excited their big crowd of supporters with the first goal of the second quarter and the lead but Alex came back with a behind after great ball movement out of defence and then Heard was again involved as he hand passed to Will Goonan for a goal. The home side got the next goal before Callum Tranter missed and then Stephen Steiner using his strength in the centre found Heard for the big forward's second goal. Ryley Norris running into form forwarded to Jake Steyger in the square for an easy goal but Thornton Eildon was matching the Rebels for intensity and goaled twice to again excite the faithful. Nathan Dundas, also winning plenty of the football through the centre, found Scott Hill on the Clubrooms side and the usually accurate forward regained the lead by the narrowest of margins as the teams left the field for half time. Upon resumption, Alex moved the ball well from defence but Brent McDonald's kick hit the post and Alexandra was now getting on top around the ground but it was not showing on the scoreboard as they were often astray. Steiner continued his strong work around the clearances and found Brayden Norris for his first goal for the game. The Alex defence continued to press forward with the dashing Scott Heveren gaining many metres every time he won possession. With Heard off injured, Alex had to restructure with Chris Mullins using his strength in the ruck and Will Goonan going back into defence to join his brother. Brayden Norris, now looking dangerous goaled again before Jordan Purcell running from half back had a chance for a rare goal but his kick was a defender's kick. Alex led by only ten points at the last change so the game was still up for grabs. Alex began to use the ball well by foot and was much more efficient up forward as Norris kicked his third successive goal followed by another to Hill. Alex now was playing the game in their half and further goals to Steiner and Cooper (2) along with Michael Coombs and Hill resulted in a comfortable victory 15.14 - 104 to Thornton Eildon
